Systematic studies of the two high-temperature monolayer oxygen structures that exist on the (110) tungsten surface were performed using low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction measurements. Our work questions the commonly accepted interpretation from the literature that striped oxygen superstructures arise from alternating site-exchanged (S-E) domains. We postulate that the superstructures originate from a misfit between tungsten and oxygen lattices while the striped appearance corresponds to a moiré pattern. Moreover, we show that the two structures, indicated as 113- and 337-phases due to the characteristic directions of the respective moiré patterns, differ considerably in their symmetry properties. This suggests that oxygen atoms in the two overlayers occupy different adsorption sites on average. In particular, the 113-phase features rotational domains that retain mirror symmetries with respect to the [001] and [1-10] directions, whereas the 337-phase is characterized by the appearance of additional domains due to the breaking of these symmetries. We propose structural models for both phases that consistently explain their unusual properties and suggest a universal mechanism for the thermal evolution of oxygen monolayer adsorbed on W(110).
The optoelectronic properties induced by oxygen vacancy defects in MgO(111) monolayers have been studied using hybrid level of DFT method. HSE calculations shows significant reduction in electronic band gap of MgO monolayer as a result of introduction of oxygen vacancies. The pristine monolayer has a wide band gap (4.84 eV, indirect) semiconducting behaviour, which changes gap to 2.97 eV (indirect) and 2.28 eV (direct) with increment in oxygen vacancy defect concentration of 6.25% and 12.5%,respectively. Consequently, presence of oxygen vacancies leads to energy red shift of the observed optic…
Two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials with strong ferromagnetism and high Curie temperature are significantly desired for the applications of nanoscale devices. Here, based on first-principles computations, we report hydrogenated/oxygenated Mn2C monolayer is a such material with strong room-temperature ferromagnetism. The bare Mn2C monolayer is an antiferromagnetic metal with the local magnetic moment of Mn ~ 3μB. However, the antiferromagnetic coupling of Mn atoms can transform into the ferromagnetic order under hydrogenation/oxygenation. Especially, the magnetic moments in hydrogenated/oxy…
Monolayer group-III monochalcogenides (MX, M = Ga, In; X = S, Se, Te), an emerging category of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, hold great promise for electronics, optoelectronics and catalysts. By first-principles calculations, we show that the phonon dispersion and Raman spectra as well as the electronic and topological properties of monolayer MX can be tuned by oxygen functionalization. Chemisorption of oxygen atoms on one side or both sides of the MX sheet narrows or even closes the band gap, enlarges work function, and significantly reduces the carrier effective mass. More excitingly,…
wo-dimensional (2D) materials unique properties and their promising applications in post-silicon microelectronics have attracted significant attention in the past decade. Recently, ferromagnetic order with out-of-plane easy axis in a monolayer of CrI3 has been observed and reported, with a Curie temperature of 45 K. Here we study, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, how hydrogen and oxygen adsorption affects the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a CrI3 monolayer. Our results show that while the structure remains almost unchanged by the adsorption of hydrogen, a…
Atom controlled sub-nanometer MoS$_2$ pores have been recently fabricated. Oxidative environments are of particular interest for MoS$_2$ applications in electronics, sensing and energy storage. In this work we carried out first-principles calculations of oxygen adsorption in plain and sub-nanometer MoS$_2$ nanopores. The chemical stability of the layers and pores towards oxygen was verified using density-functional theory. Dissociation and diffusion barriers have been calculated in order to understand surface and pore oxidation and its electronic properties at the atomic scale, which opens the…
The oxygen dissociation and the oxidized structure on the pristine C3N monolayer in exposure to air are the inevitably critical issues for the C3N engineering and surface functionalization yet have not been revealed in detail. Using the first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the possible O2 adsorption sites, various O2 dissociation pathways and the oxidized structures. It is demonstrated that the pristine C3N monolayer shows more O2 physisorption sites and exhibits stronger O2 adsorption than the pristine graphene. Among various dissociation pathways, the most prefe…
We comment and discuss the findings and conclusions of a recent theoretical study of the diffraction of He atoms from a monolayer of Xe atoms adsorbed on the graphite (0001) surface [Khokonov et al., Surf. Sci. 496(2002)L13]. By revisiting the problem we demonstrate that all main conclusions of Khokonov et al. that pertain to the studied system are at variance with the available experimental and theoretical evidence and the results of multiple scattering calculations presented in this comment.
Fuel cells in vehicles are the leading cause of carbon monoxide emissions. CO is one of the most dangerous gases in the atmosphere, as it binds to the hemoglobin in blood cells 200 times easier than O2. As the amount of CO in the blood stream increases, the level of oxygen decreases, which can lead to many neurological problems. To reduce the amount of CO in the atmosphere, scientists have focused on the adsorption of oxygen. The best substrates used today are platinum and palladium monolayers, which are very expensive. Because of this, researchers have searched for cheap materials, such as Mo…
The structure of the ultimately-thin crystalline allotrope of silicon oxide, prepared onto a ruthenium surface, is unveiled down to atomic scale with chemical sensitivity, thanks to high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and first principle calculations. An ordered oxygen lattice is imaged which coexists with the two-dimensional monolayer oxide. This coexistence signals a displacive transformation from an oxygen reconstructed-Ru(0001) to silicon oxide, along which latterally-shifted domains form, each with equivalent and degenerate epitaxial relationships with the substrate. The unavoid…
Chalcogen vacancies are considered to be the most abundant point defects in two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors, and predicted to result in deep in-gap states (IGS). As a result, important features in the optical response of 2D-TMDs have typically been attributed to chalcogen vacancies, with indirect support from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) images. However, TEM imaging measurements do not provide direct access to the electronic structure of individual defects; and while Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS…
First principles density functional calculations are used to study the early oxidation stages of the Mg(0001) surface for oxygen coverages 1/16 <= Theta <= 3 monolayers. It is found that at very low coverages O is incorporated below the topmost Mg layer in tetrahedral sites. At higher oxygen-load the binding in on-surface sites is increased but at one monolayer coverage the on-surface binding is still about 60 meV weaker than for subsurface sites. The subsurface octahedral sites are found to be unfavorable compared to subsurface tetrahedral sites and to on-surface sites. At higher coverages ox…
Atomic oxygen adsorption on the Mo(112) surface has been investigated by means of first-principles total energy calculations. Among the variety of possible adsorption sites it was found that the bridge sites between two Mo atoms of the topmost row are favored for O adsorption at low and medium coverages. At about one monolayer coverage oxygen atoms prefer to adsorb in a quasi-threefold hollow sites coordinated by two first-layer Mo atoms and one second layer atom. The stability of a structural model for an oxygen-induced $p(2\times 3)$ reconstruction of the missing-row type is examined.
Silicene monolayers grown on Ag(111) surfaces demonstrate a band gap that is tunable by oxygen adatoms from semimetallic to semiconducting type. By using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, it is found that the adsorption configurations and amounts of oxygen adatoms on the silicene surface are critical for band-gap engineering, which is dominated by different buckled structures in R13xR13, 4x4, and 2R3x2R3 silicene layers. The Si-O-Si bonds are the most energy-favored species formed on R13xR13, 4x4, and 2R3x2R3 structures under oxidation, which is verified by in-situ Raman spectrosc…
The evolution of titanyl-phthalocyanine (TiOPc) thin films on Ag(111) has been investigated using IRAS, SPA-LEED and STM. In the (sub)monolayer regime various phases are observed that can be assigned to a 2D gas, a commensurate and a point-on-line phase. In all three phases the non-planar TiOPc molecule is adsorbed on Ag(111) in an oxygen-up configuration with the molecular pi-conjugated backbone oriented parallel to the surface. The commensurate phase reveals a high packing density, containing two molecules at inequivalent adsorption sites within the unit cell. Both molecules assume different…
Nickel and Rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar - as from STM images - clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C/Ni, N/Ni or O/Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O/Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, $c(2\times 2)$, pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images - showing a $(2\times 2)p4g$ pattern - according to whether a rotation of the black or white squares occurs. We report on a first - principles study of the structure of X/Ni(001) and X/Rh(001) surfaces (X=C,N,O) at …
For most applications, zirconia (ZrO2) is doped with yttria. Doping leads to the stabilization of the tetragonal or cubic phase, and increased oxygen ion conductivity. Most previous surface studies of yttria-doped zirconia were plagued by impurities, however. We have studied doping of pure, 5-monolayer ZrO2 films on Rh(111) by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). STM and LEED show that the tetragonal phase is stabilized by unexpectedly low dopant concentrations, 0.5 mol% Y2O3, even when the films are essentiall…
A high-frequency optical phonon mode of SrTiO3 (STO) was found to assist the high-temperature superconductivity observed recently at the interface between monolayer FeSe and STO substrate. However, the origin of this mode is not clear. Through first-principles calculations, we find that there is a novel polar phonon mode on the surface layers of the STO substrate, which does not exist in the STO crystals. The oxygen vacancies near the FeSe/STO interface drives the dispersion of this phonon mode to be flat and lowers its energy, whereas the charge transfer between STO substrate and FeSe monolay…
We present a Density Functional Theory (DFT) study of the structural and electronic properties of bare rutile VO$_{2}$(110) surfaces and its oxygen-rich terminations. We discuss the performance of various DFT functionals, including PBE, PBE+U (U = 2 eV), SCAN and SCAN+rVV functionals with non-magnetic and ferromagnetic spin ordering. We predict the presence of a ring-like termination that is electronically and structurally related to a V$_{2}$O$_{5}$(001) monolayer and shows a higher stability than pure oxygen adsorption phases. Despite the fact that the calculated phase stabilities depend on …
We present a detailed ab initio study of the electronic structure and magnetic order of an Fe monolayer on the Ir(001) surface covered by adsorbed oxygen and hydrogen. The results are compared to the clean Fe/Ir(001) system, where recent intensive studies indicated a strong tendency towards an antiferromagnetic order and complex magnetic structures. The adsorption of an oxygen overlayer significantly increases interlayer distance between the Fe layer and the Ir substrate, while the effect of hydrogen is much weaker. We show that the adsorption of oxygen (and also of hydrogen) leads to a p(2$\t…
Using different experimental techniques combined with density functional based theoretical methods we have explored the formation of interface-stabilized manganese oxide structures grown on Pd(100) at (sub)monolayer coverage. Amongst the multitude of phases experimentally observed we focus our attention on four structures which can be classified into two distinct regimes, characterized by different building blocks. Two oxygen-rich phases are described in terms of MnO(111)-like O-Mn-O trilayers, whereas the other two have a lower oxygen content and are based on a MnO(100)-like monolayer structu…
Electronic properties of graphene oxides enriched by the strong chemical bondings are investigated using first-principle calculations. They are very sensitive to the changes in the number of graphene layer, stacking configuration, and distribution of oxygen. The feature-rich electronic structures exhibit the destruction or distortion of Dirac cone, opening of band gap, anisotropic energy dispersions, O- and (C,O)-dominated energy dispersions, and extra critical points. All the few-layer graphene oxides are semi-metals except for the semiconducting monolayer ones. For the former, the distorted …
Recent experiments performed at high pressures indicate that ruthenium can support unusually high concentrations of oxygen at the surface. To investigate the structure and stability of high coverage oxygen structures, we performed density functional theory calculations, within the generalized gradient approximation, for O adlayers on Ru(0001) from low coverage up to a full monolayer. We achieve quantitative agreement with previous low energy electron diffraction intensity analyses for the (2x2) and (2x1) phases and predict that an O adlayer with a (1x1) periodicity and coverage of 1 monolayer …
Investigation on oxidation resistance of two-dimensional (2D) materials is critical for many of their applications, because 2D materials could have higher oxidation kinetics than their bulk counterparts due to predominant surface atoms and structural distortions. In this study, the oxidation behavior of high-quality boron nitride (BN) nanosheets of 1-4 layer thick has been examined by heating in air. Atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy analyses reveal that monolayer BN nanosheets can sustain up to 850 °C and the starting temperature of oxygen doping/oxidation of BN nanosheets only s…
Using density-functional theory in combination with a thermodynamic formalism we calculate the relative stability of various structural models of the polar O-terminated (000-1)-O surface of ZnO. Model surfaces with different concentrations of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen adatoms are considered. Assuming that the surfaces are in thermodynamic equilibrium with an O2 and H2 gas phase we determine a phase diagram of the lowest-energy surface structures. For a wide range of temperatures and pressures we find that hydrogen will be adsorbed at the surface, preferentially with a coverage of 1/2 monol…
Monolayers of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) are atomically thin two-dimensional crystals with attractive optoelectronic properties, which are promising for emerging applications in nanophotonics. Here, we report on the extraordinary spatial non-uniformity of the photoluminescence (PL) and strain properties of WS2 monolayers exfoliated from the natural crystal. Specifically, it is shown that the edges of such monolayers exhibit remarkably enhanced PL intensity compared to their respective central area. A comprehensive analysis of the recombination channels involved in the PL process d…
Isolated oxygen impurities and fully oxidized structures of four stable two-dimensional (2D) SiS structures are investigated by {\em ab initio} density functional calculations. Binding energies of oxygen impurities for all the four 2D SiS structures are found larger than those for phosphorene, due to the lower electronegativity of Si atoms. The most stable configurations of isolated oxygen impurities for different 2D SiS structures are decided and the corresponding 2D structures with saturated oxidation (SiSO) are predicted. Among all the four fully oxidized structures, $α$-SiSO is demonstrate…
We report on a first-principles study of the structure of O/Rh(001) at half a monolayer of oxygen coverage, performed using density-functional theory. We find that oxygen atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, $c(2\times 2)$, pattern. This structure is unstable against a rhomboid distortion of the black squares, which shortens the distance between an O atom and two of the four neighboring Rh atoms, while lengthening the distance with respect to the other two. We actually find that the surface energy is further lowered by allowing the O atom to get off the short diagonal…
Recent neutron diffraction and NMR studies suggest that the incommensurately modulated spin cycloid structure of BiFeO3 is stable down to 4.2 K, whereas DC [M(T)] and AC [\c{hi} (ω, T)] magnetization, and caloric studies have revealed several magnetic transitions including a spin glass transition around 25 K. The two sets of observations are irreconcilable and to settle this, it is important to first verify if the low temperature magnetic transitions are intrinsic to BiFeO3 or some of them are offshoots of oxygen vacancies and the associated redox reaction involving conversion of Fe3+ to Fe2+.…
Oxygen conductors and transporters are important to several consequential renewable energy technologies, including fuel cells and syngas production. Separately, monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have demonstrated significant promise for a range of applications, including quantum computing, advanced sensors, valleytronics, and next-gen optoelectronics. Here, we synthesize a few nanometer-thick BixOySez compound that strongly resembles a rare R3m bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) phase, and combine it with monolayer TMDs, which are highly sensitive to their environment. We use the resulting …
Vanadium dioxide undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) from an insulating (monoclinic) to a metallic (tetragonal) phase close to room temperature, which makes it a promising functional material for many applications, e.g. as chemical sensors. Not much is known about its surface and interface properties, although these are critical in many of its applications. This work presents an atomic-scale investigation of the tetragonal rutile VO$_2$(110)$_\text{T}$ single-crystal surface and reports results obtained with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) a…

In oxide epitaxy, the growth temperature and background oxygen partial pressure are considered as the most critical factors that control the phase stability of an oxide thin film. Here, we report an unusual case wherein diffusion of oxygen vacancies from the substrate overpowers the growth temperature and oxygen partial pressure to deterministically influence the phase stability of $Bi_{2}WO_{6}$ thin film grown by the pulsed laser deposition technique. We show that when grown on an oxygen-deficient $SrTiO_{3}$ substrate, the $Bi_{2}WO_{6}$ film exhibits a mixture of (001) and (100)/(010)-orie…
Monolayer MnO$_2$ is one of the few predicted two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets that has been experimentally synthesized and is commercially available. The Mermin-Wagner theorem states that magnetic order in a 2D material cannot persist unless magnetic anisotropy (MA) is present and perpendicular to the plane, which permits a finite critical temperature. Previous computational studies have predicted the magnetic ordering and Curie temperature of 2D MnO$_2$ with DFT+U (Density Funtional Theory + Hubbard U correction), with the results having a strong dependence on the Hubbard U parameter. Diffu…
Gas sensing mechanism of H2S, NH3, NO2 and NO toxic gases on transition metal dichalcogenides based Janus MoSSe monolayers are investigated using the density functional theory. The pristine and defect included MoSSe layers are considered as a host material for adsorption study. Three types of defects (i) molybdenum vacancy, (ii) selenium vacancy, and (iii) sulfur/selenium vacancy are studied to understand their impact on electronic properties and sensing of these gas molecules. The formation energy is computed to predict the stability of these defects and noticed that selenium vacancy is the m…
Phase Switchable Photocatalytic Water Splitting via a Paraelectric-Ferroelectric Transition in Zr2Ge2S6 Monolayer: A Comprehensive Theoretical Insights
We show the possibility of tailoring the molecular arrangement, as well as the chemical and structural modifications, of porphyrins at the monolayer saturation coverage on TiO2(110) by Synchrotron photoemission, electron diffraction, STM topography and DFT calculations. Free-base tetra-phenyl-porphyrins (2H-TPP) adsorb on the oxygen rows, where they can spontaneously capture two additional hydrogen atoms at their iminic nitrogens (4H-TPP). Both 2H-TPP and 4H-TPP molecules aggregate into a commensurate phase at the saturation coverage of one monolayer. Upon sample heating, a self-metalation rea…
We study how FeO wüstite films on Ru(0001) grow by oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy at elevated temperatures (800-900 K). The nucleation and growth of FeO islands are observed in real time by low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). When the growth is performed in an oxygen pressure of 10-6 Torr, the islands are of bilayer thickness (Fe-O-Fe-O). In contrast, under a pressure of 10-8 Torr, the islands are a single FeO layer thick. We propose that the film thickness is controlled by the concentration of oxygen adsorbed on the Ru. More specifically, when monolayer growth increases the adsorbe…
The evolution of the atomic structure of LaAlO3 grown on SrTiO3 was investigated using surface x-ray diffraction in conjunction with model-independent, phase-retrieval algorithms between two and five monolayers film thickness. A depolarizing buckling is observed between cation and oxygen positions in response to the electric field of polar LaAlO3, which decreases with increasing film thickness. We explain this in terms of competition between elastic strain energy, electrostatic energy, and electronic reconstructions. The findings are qualitatively reproduced by density-functional theory calcul…
Any evolving system can change of state via thermal mechanisms (hopping a barrier) or via quantum tunneling. Most of the time, efficient classical mechanisms dominate at high temperatures. This is why an increase of the temperature can initiate the chemistry. We present here an experimental investigation of O-atom diffusion and reactivity on water ice. We explore the 6-25 K temperature range at sub-monolayer surface coverages. We derive the diffusion temperature law and observe the transition from quantum to classical diffusion. Despite of the high mass of O, quantum tunneling is efficient eve…
A comprehensive phase diagram of lowest-energy structures and compositions of the rutile TiO_2(110) surface in equilibrium with a surrounding gas phase at finite temperatures and pressures has been determined using density functional theory in combination with a thermodynamic formalism. The exchange of oxygen, hydrogen, and water molecules with the gas phase is considered. Particular attention is given to the convergence of all calculations with respect to lateral system size and slab thickness. In addition, the reliability of semilocal density functionals to describing the energetics of the r…
Artificial perovskite-oxide nanostructures possess intriguing magnetic properties due to their tailorable electron-electron interactions, which are extremely sensitive to the oxygen coordination environment. To date, perovskite-oxide nanodots with sizes below 50 nm have rarely been reported. Furthermore, the oxygen octahedral distortion and its relation to magnetic properties in perovskite oxide nanodots remain unexplored yet. Here, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in patterned SrRuO3 (SRO) nanodots as small as 30 nm while performing atomic-resolution electron microscopy and spectroscop…
The simplest cuprate superconductor La2CuO4+y with mobile oxygen interstitials exhibits a clear phase separation, but only recently a bulk multiscale structural phase separation has been observed by using scanning micro X-ray diffraction. Here we get further information on the structural phase separation, using local probe X-ray absorption near edge structure. The spatial distribution of superconducting units is a key parameter controlling percolative superconductivity in complex matter with dispersed superconducting units. These oxides form super-molecular architectures made of superconductin…
We investigate an excitonic peak appearing in low-temperature photoluminescence of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), which is commonly associated with defects and disorder. First, to uncover the intrinsic origin of defect-related excitons, we study their dependence on gate voltage, excitation power, and temperature in a prototypical TMDC monolayer, $MoS_2$. We show that the entire range of behaviors of defect-related excitons can be understood in terms of a simple model, where neutral excitons are bound to ionized donor levels, likely related to sulphur vacancies, with a dens…
The fundamental properties of infinite-layer rare-earth nickelates (RNiO2) are carefully revisited and compared with those of CaCuO2 and RNiO3 perovskites. Combining first-principles and finite-temperature second-principles calculations, we highlight that bulk NdNiO2 compound are far from equivalent to CaCuO2, together at the structural, electronic, and magnetic levels. Structurally, it is shown to be prone to spin-phonon coupling induced oxygen square rotation motion, which might be responsible for the intriguing upturn of the resistivity. At the electronic and magnetic levels, we point out o…
Layered tin monoxide (SnO) offers an exciting two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting system with great technological potential for next-generation electronics and photocatalytic applications. Using a combination of first-principles simulations and strain field analysis, this study investigates the structural dynamics of oxygen (O) vacancies in monolayer SnO and their functionalization by complementary lightweight dopants, namely C, Si, N, P, S, F, Cl, H and H$_{2}$. Our results show that O vacancies are the dominant native defect under Sn-rich growth conditions with active diffusion characteristi…
