Using different experimental techniques combined with density functional based theoretical methods we have explored the formation of interface-stabilized manganese oxide structures grown on Pd(100) at (sub)monolayer coverage. Amongst the multitude of phases experimentally observed we focus our attention on four structures which can be classified into two distinct regimes, characterized by different building blocks. Two oxygen-rich phases are described in terms of MnO(111)-like O-Mn-O trilayers, whereas the other two have a lower oxygen content and are based on a MnO(100)-like monolayer structure. The excellent agreement between calculated and experimental scanning tunneling microscopy images and vibrational electron energy loss spectra allows for a detailed atomic description of the explored models.
Two-dimensional manganese oxide layers have been grown on Pd(100) and have been characterized by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The complex surface phase diagram of MnOx on Pd(100) is reported, where nine different novel Mn oxide phases have been detected as a function of the chemical potential of oxygen mO. Three regions of the chemical potential of oxygen can be identified, in which structurally related oxide phases are formed, often in coexistence at the surface. The different regions of mO are reflect…
Gated molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) exhibits a rich phase diagram upon increasing electron doping, including a superconducting phase, a polaronic reconstruction of the bandstructure, and structural transitions away from the 2H polytype. The average time between two charge-carrier scattering events - the scattering lifetime - is a key parameter to describe charge transport and obtain physical insight in the behavior of such a complex system. In this work, we combine the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation (based on ab-initio density functional theory calculations of the electronic bands…

The ground state structural properties calculated with dispersion corrected density functionals are in good agreement with experiment. The computed equilibrium crystal structure is further used to calculate the equation of state and zone-center vibrational frequencies of the material. The electronic band structure is calculated and found that the material is …
Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E…
An amorphous Se$_{0.80}$S$_{0.20}$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying was studied by Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and optical absorption spectroscopy, and also through reverse Monte Carlo simulations of its total structure factor and EXAFS data. Its vibrational modes, optical gap and structural properties as average interatomic distances and average coordination numbers were determined and compared to those found for an amorphous Se$_{0.90}$S$_{0.10}$ alloy. The results indicate that coordination numbers, interatomic distances and a…
Polycrystalline samples of LaFeO3 and GdFeO3 were synthesized by the molten salt method. Some properties and the quality of the resulting compounds were investigated. The crystal structure and purity of the samples was determined through X-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis. The vibrational properties were characterized by Raman and IR spectroscopy. Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to determine the ionic state of the Fe ions and the internal hyperfine magnetic fields Considerable reduction of the heat treatment (temperature and time) for the reaction to take place was achieved without detrim…
We report a first principles study of the structure and the vibrational properties of the Si(100)-H(2 \times 1) surface in an electric field. The calculated vibrational parameters are used to model the vibrational modes in the presence of the electric field corresponding to a realistic STM tip-surface geometry. We find that local one-phonon excitations have short lifetimes (10 ps at room temperature) due to incoherent lateral diffusion, while diffusion of local multi-phonon excitations are suppressed due to anharmonic frequency shifts and have much longer lifetimes (10 ns at room temperature).…
The effect of pressure on the structural and vibrational properties of the layered molecular crystal 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethelene (FOX-7) are explored by first principles calculations. We observe significant changes in the calculated structural properties with different corrections for treating van der Waals interactions to Density Functional Theory (DFT), as compared with standard DFT functionals. In particular, the calculated ground state lattice parameters, volume and bulk modulus obtained with Grimme's scheme are found to agree well with experiments. The calculated vibrational frequenci…
Electronic, structural, vibrational and elastic properties of PaN have been studied both at ambient and high pressures, using first principles methods with several commonly used parameterizations of the exchange-correlation energy. The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) reproduces the ground state properties satisfactorily. Under pressure PaN is found to undergo a structural transition from NaCl to the R-3m structure near 58 GPa. The high pressure behavior of the acoustic phonon branch along the (1,0,0) and (1,1,0) directions, and the C44 elastic constant are anomalous, which signals the…
A study based on ab initio calculations is presented on the estructural, elastic, and vibrational properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes with different radii and chiralities. We use SIESTA, an implementation of pseudopotential-density-functional theory which allows calculations on systems with a large number of atoms per cell. Different quantities like bond distances, Young moduli, Poisson ratio and the frequencies of different phonon branches are monitored versus tube radius. The validity of expectations based on graphite is explored down to small radii, where some deviations appear relat…
We report the structural, elastic and vibrational properties of five ionic-molecular solid oxidizers MNO$_3$ (M = Li, Na, K) and MClO$_3$ (M = Na, K). By treating long range electron-correlation effects, dispersion corrected method leads to more accurate predictions of structural properties and phase stability of KNO$_3$ polymorphs. The obtained elastic moduli show soft nature of these materials and are consistent with Ultrasonic Pulse Echo measurements. We made a complete assignment of vibrational modes which are in good accord with available experimental results. From calculated IR and Raman…
We develop a shell model (SM) for potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) which is fitted to ab initio (AI) results that include nonlocal van der Waals corrections. The SM is comprehensively tested by comparing results of structural, vibrational and ferroelectric properties with AI and experimental data. The relaxed structural parameters are in very good agreement with the AI results and the available experimental data. The $Γ$-point phonons and the total phonon densities of states (DOSs) in the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases calculated with the developed SM are in good overall agreement w…
In this work, we perform first-principles calculations of the structural, electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of a novel ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ azafullerene. Full geometrical optimization shows that ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ is characterized by several distinguishing features: only one nitrogen atom per pentagon, two nitrogen atoms preferentially sitting in one hexagon, ${\rm S}_{6}$ symmetry, 6 unique nitrogen-carbon and 9 unique carbon-carbon bond lengths. The highest occupied molecular orbital of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ is a doubly degenerate level of $a_{g}$ symmetry an…
We report results of a systematic study of structural, vibrational and thermodynamical properties of 34-atom bimetallic nanoparticles from the AgnCu34-n family using model interaction potentials as derived from the embedded atom method and in the harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics. Systematic trends in the bond length and dynamical properties can be explained largely on arguments based on local coordination and elemental environment. Thus increase in the number of silver atoms in a given neighborhood introduces a monotonic increase in bond length while increase of the copper content do…

In the present work, we report density functional theory (DFT) calculations on structural, equation of state, vibrational spectra, electronic structure and absorption spectra of K$_2$DNABT. We have discussed the influence of weak dispersive interactions on structural and…
The encapsulation of two-dimensional layered materials such as black phosphorus is of paramount importance for their stability in air. However, the encapsulation poses several questions, namely, how it affects, via the weak van der Waals forces, the properties of the black phosphorus and whether these properties can be tuned on demand. Prompted by these questions, we have investigated the impact of hexagonal boron nitride encapsulation on the structural and vibrational properties of few layer black phosphorus, using a first-principles method in the framework of density functional theory. We de…
Crystalline structures, zone-center phonon modes, and the related dielectric response of the three low-pressure phases of HfO2 have been investigated in density-functional theory using ultrasoft pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis. The structures of low-pressure HfO2 polymorphs are carefully studied with both the local-density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The fully relaxed structures obtained with either exchange-correlation scheme agree reasonably well with experiment, although LDA yields better overall agreement. After calculating the Born effecti…
Thermal equations of state (EoS) are essential in several scientific domains. However, experimental determination of EoS parameters may be limited at extreme conditions, therefore, {\it ab~initio} calculations have become an important method to obtain them. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its extensions with various degrees of approximations for the exchange and correlation (XC) energy is the method of choice, but large errors in the EoS parameters are still common. The alkali halides have been problematic from the onset of this field and the quest for appropriate DFT functionals for such …

The structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical properties of diamond, graphite and layered derivatives (graphene, rhombohedral graphite) are computed using a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) total-energy calculations and density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) lattice dynamics at the GGA-PBE level. Overall, very good agreement is found for the structural properties and phonon dispersions, with the exception of the c/a ratio in graphite and the associated elastic constants and phonon dispersions. Both the C_33 elastic constant and the Gamma to A phonon dispersions are brough…

The purity of graphene samples is of crucial importance for their experimental and practical use. In this regard, the detection of the defects is of direct relevance. Here, we show that structural defects in graphene samples give rise to clear signals in the vibrational density of states (VDOS) at the specific peaks at high and low frequencies. These can be used as an independent probe of the defect density. In particular, we consider grain boundaries made of pentagon-heptagon pairs, and show that they lead to a shift of the characteristic vibrational D mode towards higher frequency; this disti…
We study a calcium aluminosilicate glass of composition (SiO2)0.60(Al2O3)0.10(CaO)0.30 by means of molecular dynamics. To this end, we conduct parallel simulations, following a consistent methodology, but using three different potentials. Structural and elastic properties are analyzed and compared to available experimental data. This allows assessing the respective abilities of the potentials to produce a realistic glass. We report that, although all these potentials offer a reasonable glass structure, featuring tricluster oxygen atoms, their respective vibrational and elastic predictions diff…
We study the structural and vibrational properties of the high-temperature superconducting sulfur trihydride and trideuteride in the high-pressure $Im\bar{3}m$ and $R3m$ phases by first-principles density-functional-theory calculations. On lowering pressure, the rhombohedral transition $Im\bar{3}m \rightarrow R3m$ is expected, with hydrogen bond desymmetrization and occurrence of trigonal lattice distortion. In hydrostatic conditions we find that, contrary to what suggested in some recent experiments, if the rhombohedral distortion exists it affects mainly the hydrogen-bonds, whereas the resul…
The structural, dynamic, and vibrational properties during the heat transfer process in Si/Ge superlattices, are studied by analyzing the trajectories generated by the ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulation. The radial distribution functions and mean square displacements are calculated and further discussions are made to explain and probe the structural changes relating to the heat transfer phenomenon. Furthermore, the vibrational density of states of the two layers (Si/Ge) are computed and plotted to analyze the contributions of phonons with different frequencies to the heat c…
We apply a general first-principles approach to derive the phase diagram of metallic Lithium at ambient pressure between 0 and 350 K, including identification of candidate phases. We use ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS) to identify competing phases and supplement the results with calculations of vibrational properties and relevant derived neutron diffraction patterns. Strong quantum nuclear effects are present, prompting a careful treatment of vibrations. We directly map the Born-Oppenheimer surface of Li for the first time, allowing the extension of the normal quasi-harmonic treat…

Calculated bulk modulus value 29.77 GPa using LDA functional is found to be close to experimental value 26 GPa. The order of elastic constant along the principal axis clearly indicates the crucial role of Re and O3 atoms in the structural and mechanical properties of this material. Analysis of Born effective charge (BEC) along with …
Structural, vibrational and thermal properties of densified sodium silicate (NS2) are investigated with classical molecular dynamics simulations of the glass and the liquid state. A systematic investigation of the glass structure with respect to density was performed. We observe a repolymerization of the network manifested by a transition from a tetrahedral to an octahedral silicon environment, the decrease of the amount of non-bridging oxygen atoms and the appearance of three-fold coordinated oxygen atoms (triclusters). Anomalous changes in the medium range order are observed, the first sharp…
The electrical and chemical properties of carbon nanotubes vary significantly with different chirality and diameter, making the experimental determination of these structural properties important. Here, we show that the vibrational density of states (VDOS) contains information on the structure of carbon nanotubes, particularly at low frequencies. We show that the diameter and chirality of the nanotubes can be determined from the characteristic low frequency $L$ and $L'$ modes in the VDOS. For zigzag nanotubes, the $L$ peak splits into two peaks giving rise to another low energy $L"$ peak. The …
The structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of Ni$_{40}$Pd$_{40}$P$_{20}$ bulk metallic glass have been studied using ${\it ab\,initio}$ molecular-dynamics simulations and total-energy optimization. Structural analyses of the resulting ${\it ab\,initio}$ models show the presence of few to no P-P bonds and two main building blocks, consisting of tricapped trigonal prism (TTP) and capped square anti-prism (CSAP) with P as the center of these blocks. The computed Pd and Ni K-edge spectra of extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) are found to be in good agreement with experime…
Vibrational and elastic properties of the $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ skutterudites are investigated by, respectively, temperature $(T)$ dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and pressure $(P)$ dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The Fe $K$-edge EXAFS experiments of the $R=$ K, Ca and Ba materials were performed in the $T$-interval $6<T<300$ K and XRD experiments of the $R=$ Na, K, Ca, Sr and Ba materials were performed in the $P$-interval $1\text{ atm }<P<16$ GPa. From EXAFS, we obtained the correlated Debye-Waller parameters that were thus analyzed to extract effecti…
The evolution of titanyl-phthalocyanine (TiOPc) thin films on Ag(111) has been investigated using IRAS, SPA-LEED and STM. In the (sub)monolayer regime various phases are observed that can be assigned to a 2D gas, a commensurate and a point-on-line phase. In all three phases the non-planar TiOPc molecule is adsorbed on Ag(111) in an oxygen-up configuration with the molecular pi-conjugated backbone oriented parallel to the surface. The commensurate phase reveals a high packing density, containing two molecules at inequivalent adsorption sites within the unit cell. Both molecules assume different…
A structural transformation in water upon compression was recently observed at the temperature $T=277$~K in the vicinity of the pressure $p \approx 2\;000$~Atm [R.M. Khusnutdinoff, A.V. Mokshin, J. Non-Cryst. Solids \textbf{357}, 1677 (2011)]. It was found that the transformations are related with the principal structural changes within the first two coordination shells as well as the deformation of the hydrogen-bond network. In this work we study in details the influence of these structural transformations on the vibrational molecular dynamics of water by means of molecular dynamics simulatio…
Our lives are surrounded by a rich assortment of disordered materials. In particular, glasses are well known as dense, amorphous materials, whereas gels exist in low-density, disordered states. Recent progress has provided a significant step forward in understanding the material properties of glasses, such as mechanical, vibrational, and transport properties. In contrast, our understanding of particulate physical gels is still highly limited. Here, using molecular dynamics simulations, we study a simple model of particulate physical gels, the Lennard-Jones (LJ) gels, and provide a comprehensiv…

The theoretically relaxed structure is found to agree well with the existing experimental data with a deviation of less than $0.2\%$. Both the density of states and the electronic band structure are calculated, showing five distinct groups of valence bands. Furthermore, the Born effective charge, the dielectric permittivity tensors, and the vibrational frequencies at the center of the Brillouin zone are all obtained. C…
The recent discovery of non-saturating giant positive magnetoresistance in Td-WTe2 has aroused great interest in this material. We have studied the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of bulk and few-layer Td-WTe2 experimentally and theoretically. Spin-orbit coupling is found to govern the semi-metallic character of Td-WTe2. Its structural link with the metallic 1T form provides an understanding of its structural stability. We observe a metal to insulator transition and a change in the sign of the Seebeck coefficient around 373 K. Lattice vibrations in Td-WTe2 have been analyzed …
We present first-principles calculations on bulk CdSe and CdSe nanowires with diameters of up to 22 Å. Density functional linear combination of atomic orbitals and plane wave calculations of the electronic and structural properties are presented and discussed. We use an iterative, symmetry-based method to relax the structures into the ground state. We find that the band gap depends on surface termination. Vibrational properties in the whole Brillouin zone of bulk CdSe and the zone-center vibrations of nanowires are calculated and analyzed. We find strongly size-dependent and nearly constant mo…
We present a systematic first-principles study of the structural and vibrational properties of perovskite-structure EuTiO3. Our calculated phonon spectrum of the high-symmetry cubic structural prototype shows strong M- and R-point instabilities, indicating a tendency to symmetry-lowering structural deformations composed of rotations and tilts of the oxygen octahedra. Subsequent explicit study of 14 different octahedral tilt-patterns showed that the I4/mcm, Imma, and R\bar{3}c structures, all with antiferrodistortive rotations of the octahedra, have significantly lower total energy than the pro…

The atomic structure of icosahedral B$_4$C boron carbide is determined by comparing existing infra-red absorption and Raman diffusion measurements with the predictions of accurate {\it ab initio} lattice-dynamical calculations performed for different structural models. This allows us to unambiguously determine the location of the carbon atom within the boron icosahedron, a task presently beyond X-ray and neutron diffraction ability. By examining the inter- and intra-icosahedral contributions to the stiffness we show that, contrary to recent conjectures, intra-icosahedral bonds are harder.
Transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ is an important candidate for realizing the newly predicted type-IIWeyl fermions, for which the breaking of the inversion symmetry is a prerequisite. Here we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the inversion symmetry breaking in the low temperature phase of MoTe$_2$ by systematic Raman experiments and first principles calculations. We identify five lattice vibrational modes which are Raman active only in noncentrosymmetric structure at low temperature. A hysteresis is also observed in the peak intensity of inversion symmetry activated Raman modes,…
The surface stabilized MnO(100)-like monolayer, characterised by a regular c(4x2) distribution of Mn vacancies, is studied by hybrid functionals and discussed in the light of available scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy data. We show that the use of hybrid functionals is crucial to account for the intermingled nature of magnetic ineractions, electron localization, structural distortions and surface phonons. The proposed Pd(100) supported Mn3O4 structure is excellently compatible with the experiments previously reported in literature.

The vibrational properties of three sodosilicate glasses have been investigated in the framework of Density Functional Theory. The pure vibrational density of states has been calculated for all systems and the different vibrational modes have been assigned to specific atoms or structural units. It is shown that the Na content affects several vibrational features as the position and intensity of the $R$ band or the mixing of the rocking and bending atomic motions of the Si-O-Si bridges. The calculated Raman spectra have been found to agree with experimental observations and their decomposition …
Bonding, electric (hyper)polarizability, vibrational and magnetic properties of heterofullerene ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ are studied by first-principles calculations. Infrared- and Raman-active vibrational frequencies of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ are assigned. Eight $^{13}$C and 2 $^{11}$B NMR spectral signals of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ are characterized. The first-order hyperpolarizability in ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ is zero because of the inversion symmetry. The average second-order hyperpolarizability of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ is about 180% larger than that of ${\rm C}_{60}$. Ou…
We report a detailed study of the vibrational properties of BN single-walled nanotubes and of the BN monolayer. Our results have been obtained from a well-established Tight-Binding model complemented with an electrostatic model to account for the long-range interactions arising from the polar nature of the material, and which are not included in the Tight-Binding model. Our study provides a wealth of data for the BN monolayer and nanotubes, such as phonon band structure, vibrational density of states, elastic constants, etc. For the nanotubes we obtain the behavior of the optically active mode…
We study the influence of structural lattice fluctuations on the elastic electron transport in single-wall carbon nanotubes within a density-functional-based scheme. In the linear response regime, the linear conductance is calculated via configurational averages over the distorted lattice. Results obtained from a frozen-phonon approach as well as from molecular dynamics simulations are compared. We further suggest that the effect of structural fluctuations can be qualitatively captured by the Anderson model with bond disorder. The influence of individual vibrational modes on the electronic tra…
The structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene are measured at high pressures up to 30.2 GPa by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. Two phase transitions are observed in raman spectra under pressures of 2.3 GPa and 5.4 GPa with significant changes of intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes, and all the raman peaks disappeared in the luminesce background above 10.2 GPa. Upon further compression above 20.0 GPa, three broad bands are observed respectively around 1600, 2993 and 3181 cm$^{-1}$ in Raman spectra, strongly indicating that phenanthren…
