The structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of Ni$_{40}$Pd$_{40}$P$_{20}$ bulk metallic glass have been studied using ${\it ab\,initio}$ molecular-dynamics simulations and total-energy optimization. Structural analyses of the resulting ${\it ab\,initio}$ models show the presence of few to no P-P bonds and two main building blocks, consisting of tricapped trigonal prism (TTP) and capped square anti-prism (CSAP) with P as the center of these blocks. The computed Pd and Ni K-edge spectra of extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) are found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The configurational-average static structure factor and the generalized vibrational density of states are also observed to be in good agreement with experimental data.
We numerically study the evolution of the vibrational density of states $D(ω)$ of zero-temperature glasses when their kinetic stability is varied over an extremely broad range, ranging from poorly annealed glasses obtained by instantaneous quenches from above the onset temperature, to ultrastable glasses obtained by quenching systems thermalised below the experimental glass temperature. The low-frequency part of the density of states splits between extended and quasi-localized modes. Extended modes exhibit a boson peak crossing over to Debye behaviour ($D(ω) \sim ω^2$) at low-frequency, with a…
The low-temperature thermal properties of glasses are anomalous with respect to those of crystals. These thermal anomalies indicate that the low-frequency vibrational properties of glasses differ from those of crystals. Recent studies revealed that, in the simplest model of glasses, i.e., the harmonic potential system, phonon modes coexist with soft localized modes in the low-frequency (continuum) limit. However, the nature of low-frequency vibrational modes of more realistic models is still controversial. In the present work, we study the Lennard-Jones (LJ) system using large-scale molecular-…
We use computer simulations to probe the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of a glass-former that undergoes an ideal glass-transition because of the presence of randomly pinned particles. We find that even deep in the equilibrium glass state the system relaxes to some extent because of the presence of localized excitations that allow the system to access different inherent structures, giving thus rise to a non-trivial contribution to the entropy. By calculating with high accuracy the vibrational part of the entropy, we show that also in the equilibrium glass state thermodynamics and dynamic…
Glasses show vibrational properties that are markedly different to those of crystals which are known as phonons. For example, excess low-frequency modes (the so-called boson peak), vibrational localization, and strong scattering of phonons have been the most discussed topics, and a theoretical understanding of these phenomena is challenging. To address this problem, computational simulations are a powerful tool, which have been employed by many previous works. In this chapter, we describe simulation methods for studying the vibrational properties of glasses (and any solid-state materials). We …
Glasses exhibit spatially localized vibrations in the low-frequency regime. These localized modes emerge below the boson peak frequency $ω_\text{BP}$, and their vibrational densities of state follow $g(ω) \propto ω^4$ ($ω$ is frequency). Here, we attempt to address how the localized vibrations behave through the ideal glass transition. To do this, we employ a random pinning method, which enables us to study the thermodynamic glass transition. We find that the localized vibrations survive even in equilibrium glass states. Remarkably, the localized vibrations still maintain the properties of app…
We study a calcium aluminosilicate glass of composition (SiO2)0.60(Al2O3)0.10(CaO)0.30 by means of molecular dynamics. To this end, we conduct parallel simulations, following a consistent methodology, but using three different potentials. Structural and elastic properties are analyzed and compared to available experimental data. This allows assessing the respective abilities of the potentials to produce a realistic glass. We report that, although all these potentials offer a reasonable glass structure, featuring tricluster oxygen atoms, their respective vibrational and elastic predictions diff…
It was recently shown that different simple models of glass formers with binary interactions define a universality class in terms of the density of states of their quasi-localized low-frequency modes. Explicitly, once the hybridization with standard Debye (extended) modes is avoided, a number of such models exhibit a universal density of state, depending on the mode frequencies as $D(ω) \sim ω^4$. It is unknown however how wide is this universality class, and whether it also pertains to more realistic models of glass formers. To address this issue we present analysis of the quasi-localized mod…
We present in this paper a numerical study of the vibrational eigenvectors of a two-dimensional amorphous material, previously deeply studied from the point of view of mechanical properties and vibrational eigen-frequencies [7-10]. Attention is paid here to the connection between the mechanical properties of this material in term of elastic heterogeneities (EH), and how these inherent heterogeneous structures affect the vibrational eigenvectors and their plane waves decomposition. The systems are analysed for different hydrostatic pressures, and using results from previous studies, a deeper un…
The low-temperature properties of glasses present important differences with respect to crystalline matter. In particular, models such as the Debye model of solids, which assume the existence of an underlying regular lattice, predict that the specific heat of solids varies with the cube of temperature at low temperatures. Since the 1970s' at least, it is a well established experimental fact that the specific heat of glasses is instead just linear in $T$ at $T \sim 1K$, and presents a pronounced peak when normalized by $T^{3}$, known as the boson peak. Here we present a new approach which sugge…
Glasses possess more low-frequency vibrational modes than predicted by Debye theory. These excess modes are crucial for the understanding the low temperature thermal and mechanical properties of glasses, which differ from those of crystalline solids. Recent simulational studies suggest that the density of the excess modes scales with their frequency $ω$ as $ω^4$ in two and higher dimensions. Here, we present extensive numerical studies of two-dimensional model glass formers over a large range of glass stabilities. We find that the density of the excess modes follows $D_\text{exc}(ω)\sim ω^2 $ …
We study the interaction of the relaxation processes with the density fluctuations by molecular dynamics simulation of a flexible molecule model for o-terphenyl (oTP) in the liquid and supercooled phases. We find evidence, besides the structural relaxation, of a secondary vibrational relaxation whose characteristic time, few ps, is slightly temperature dependent. This i) confirms the result by Monaco et al. [Phys. Rev, E 62, 7595 (2000)] of the vibrational nature of the fast relaxation observed in Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) experiments in oTP; and ii) poses a caveat on the interpretation…
Our lives are surrounded by a rich assortment of disordered materials. In particular, glasses are well known as dense, amorphous materials, whereas gels exist in low-density, disordered states. Recent progress has provided a significant step forward in understanding the material properties of glasses, such as mechanical, vibrational, and transport properties. In contrast, our understanding of particulate physical gels is still highly limited. Here, using molecular dynamics simulations, we study a simple model of particulate physical gels, the Lennard-Jones (LJ) gels, and provide a comprehensiv…
Atomic vibrations in perfect, slightly defective or mixed crystals are to a large extent well understood since many decades. Theoretical descriptions are thus in excellent agreement with the experiments. As a consequence, phonon-related properties like specific heat, thermal conductivity or sound attenuation are also well explained in these solids. This is not yet the case in glasses where the lack of periodicity generates enormous difficulties in theoretical treatments as well as in experiments or in numerical simulations. Thanks to recent developments along all these lines, comprehensive stu…
We compare vibrational dynamics in two structurally distinct, simple monatomic model glasses simulated by molecular dynamics: the Lennard-Jones glass with an fcc-related structure and a glass with predominantly icosahedral short-range order. The former, characterised by a single local quasi-periodicity, supports only modes with acoustic behaviour. In the latter, the presence of optic modes and two incommensurate length scales is observed. This pattern of vibrational dynamics is shown to be closely related to that of a Frank-Kasper crystal having the same local topological order.
Many systems, including polymers and molecular liquids, when adequately cooled and/or compressed, solidify into a disordered solid, i.e., a glass. The~transition is not abrupt, featuring progressive decrease of the microscopic mobility and huge slowing down of the relaxation.} A~distinctive aspect of glass-forming materials is the microscopic dynamical heterogeneity (DH), i.e., the presence of regions with almost immobile particles coexisting with others where highly mobile ones are located. Following the first compelling evidence of a strong correlation between vibrational dynamics and ultras…
Using density functional molecular dynamics simulations, we analyze the broken chemical order in a GeS$_2$ glass and its impact on the dynamical properties of the glass through the in-depth study of the vibrational eigenvectors. We find homopolar bonds and the frequencies of the corresponding modes are in agreement with experimental data. Localized S-S modes and 3-fold coordinated sulfur atoms are found to be at the origin of specific Raman peaks whose origin was not previously clear. Through the ring size statistics we find, during the glass formation, a conversion of 3-membered rings into la…
Crystallization of metallic glass as a grain-boundary nucleated process: experimental and theoretical evidence for the grain structure of metallic glasses
Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the dependence of the structural and vibrational properties of the surfaces of sodo-silicate glasses on the sodium content as well as the nature of the surface. Two types of glass surfaces are considered: A melt-formed surface (MS) in which a liquid with a free surface has been cooled down into the glass phase and a fracture surface (FS) obtained by tensile loading of a glass sample. We find that the MS is more abundant in Na and non-bridging oxygen atoms than the FS and the bulk glass, whereas the FS has higher concentration of structural de…
Low-frequency vibrations of glassy and crystalline orthoterphenyl are studied by means of neutron scattering. Phonon dispersions are measured along the main axes of a single crystal, and the corresponding longitudinal and transversal sound velocities are obtained. For glassy and polycrystalline samples, a density of vibrational states is determined and cross-checked against other dynamic observables. In the crystal, low-lying zone-boundary modes lead to an excess over the Debye density of states. In the glass, the boson peak is located at even lower frequencies. With increasing temperature, bo…
The effects of the physical aging on the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of a polymeric glass is studied. The VDOS of a poly(methyl methacrylate) glass at low-energy (<15 meV), was determined from inelastic neutron scattering at low-temperature for two different physical thermodynamical states. One sample was annealed during a long time at temperature lower than Tg, and another was quenched from a temperature higher than Tg. It was found that the VDOS around the boson peak, relatively to the one at higher energy, decreases with the annealing at lower temperature than Tg, i.e., with the ph…
We study the vibrational and electronic properties of (x)Na$_2$S-(1-x)GeS$_2$ glasses through DFT-based molecular dynamics simulations, at different sodium concentrations ($0<x<0.5$). We compute the vibrational density of states for the different samples in order to determine the contribution of the Na$^+$ ions in the VDOS. With an in-depth analysis of the eigenvectors we determine the spatial and atomic localization of the different modes, and in particular in the zone corresponding to the Boson peak. We also calculate the electronic density of states as well as the partial EDOS in order to d…
We use coherent X-rays to probe the aging dynamics of a metallic glass directly on the atomic level. Contrary to the common assumption of a steady slowing down of the dynamics usually observed in macroscopic studies, we show that the structural relaxation processes underlying aging in this metallic glass are intermittent and highly heterogeneous at the atomic scale. Moreover, physical aging is triggered by cooperative atomic rearrangements, driven by the relaxation of internal stresses. The rich diversity of this behavior reflects a complex energy landscape, giving rise to a unique type of gla…
The structural description for the intriguing link between the fast vibrational dynamics and slow diffusive dynamics in glass-forming systems is one of the most challenging issues in physical science. Here, in a model of metallic supercooled liquid, we find that local connectivity as an atomic-level structural order parameter tunes the short-time vibrational excitations of the icosahedrally coordinated particles and meanwhile modulates their long-time relaxation dynamics changing from stretched to compressed exponentials, denoting a dynamic transition from subdiffusive to hyperdiffusive motion…
The activation energy (E_A) spectra of potential energy landscape (PEL) provides a convenient perspective for interpreting complex phenomena in amorphous materials; however, the link between the E_A spectra and other physical properties in metallic glasses is still mysterious. By systematically probing the E_A spectra for numerous metallic glass samples with distinct local geometric ordering, which correspond to broad processing histories, it is found that the shear modulus of the samples are strongly correlated with the arithmetic mean of the E_A spectra rather than with the local geometrical…
We report a strain rate (equivalent to experimental observation time) induced glass transition in model SrCaYbMg(Li)Zn(Cu) metallic glasses at room temperature. A critical strain rate, equivalent to glass transition temperature, is found for the strain rate induced a glassy state to liquid-like viscoplastic state translation. The results show that the observation time, equivalent to temperature and stress, is a key parameter for the glass transition. A three-dimension glass transition phase diagram involved in time, temperature and stress in metallic glasses is established for understanding th…
The relaxation dynamics and the vibrational spectra of amorphous solids, such as metal alloys, have been intensely investigated as well separated topics in the past. The aim of this review is to summarize recent results in both these areas in an attempt to establish, or unveil, deeper connections between the two phenomena of relaxation and vibration. Theoretical progress in the area of slow relaxation dynamics of liquid and glassy systems and in the area of vibrational spectra of glasses and liquids is reviewed. After laying down a generic modelling framework to connect vibration and relaxatio…
The scaling form and system-size dependence of the low-frequency wing of the nonphononic vibrational spectrum of two-dimensional structural glasses have been debated in recent literature. Here we provide numerical evidence that the prefactor $A_{\rm g}$ of the low-frequency nonphononic vibrational spectrum -- the latter grows from zero frequency ($ω\!=\!0$) as $A_{\rm g}ω^β$ -- is system-size dependent, and that the exponent $β$ exhibits a similar glass-formation-protocol and system-size dependence as seen in three-dimensional structural glasses.
We use a local projectional analysis method to investigate the effect of topological disorder on the vibrational dynamics in a model glass simulated by molecular dynamics. Evidence is presented that the vibrational eigenmodes in the glass are generically related to the corresponding eigenmodes of its crystalline counterpart via disorder-induced level-repelling and hybridization effects. It is argued that the effect of topological disorder in the glass on the dynamical matrix can be simulated by introducing positional disorder in a crystalline counterpart.
Structural, vibrational and thermal properties of densified sodium silicate (NS2) are investigated with classical molecular dynamics simulations of the glass and the liquid state. A systematic investigation of the glass structure with respect to density was performed. We observe a repolymerization of the network manifested by a transition from a tetrahedral to an octahedral silicon environment, the decrease of the amount of non-bridging oxygen atoms and the appearance of three-fold coordinated oxygen atoms (triclusters). Anomalous changes in the medium range order are observed, the first sharp…
Upon cooling, glass-forming liquids experience a two-step relaxation associated to the cage rattling and the escape from the cage, and the following decoupling between the \b{eta}- and the α-relaxations. The found decoupling behaviors have greatly changed the face of glassy physics and materials studies. Here we report a novel dynamic decoupling that the relaxation function changes gradually from a single-step to a two-step form as temperature declines through the stress relaxation of various metallic glasses in a broad time and temperature range below glass transition temperature (Tg). Such a…

The Raman response of the metallic glass Ni$_{67}$Zr$_{33}$ is measured as a function of polarization and temperature and analyzed theoretically. Unexpectedly, the intensity in the range up to 300\wn increases upon cooling, which is counterintuitive when the response originates from vibrations alone as in insulators. The increase finds a natural explanation if the conduction electrons are assumed to scatter on localized vibrations with a scattering probability proportional to the Debye-Waller factor. None of our assumptions is material specific, and the results are expected to be relevant for …
The boson peak (BP) is a universal feature in the Raman and inelastic scattering spectra of both disordered and crystalline materials. The current paradigm presents the boson peak as the result of a Ioffe-Regel crossover between ballistic (phonon) and diffusive-type excitations, where the loss of coherence of phonons is described as a purely harmonic process due to structural disorder. This "harmonic disorder" paradigm for the BP has never been challenged or tested at the atomistic level. Here, through a set of atomistically-resolved characterizations of amorphous metallic alloys, we uncover a…
We have determined the vibrational properties of a sodium tetrasilicate (Na$_{2}$Si$_{4}$O$_{9}$) glass model generated by molecular dynamics simulations. The study has been carried out using a classical valence force fields approach as well as an {\it ab initio} approach in the framework of the density functional theory. The total and partial vibrational densities of states (VDOS) are presented, as well as some characteristics of the vibrational modes (participation ratios, correlation lengths). For the low-frequency bands below 500 cm${}^{-1}$, we find that the shapes of the two calculated V…
In the present investigation the glass forming ability of Ce65Al25Co10 metallic glass has been reported. It was successfully synthesised using melt spinning techniques. The existence of amorphous phase in Ce65Al25Co10 alloy have been proved using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. The thermal analysis of the synthesised sample using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows a glass transition around 371 K, thus confirms existence of glassy phase at room temperature. The hardness of the synthesised sample at different load have been demonstrated…
We show the correlation between nanoscale structural heterogeneity and mechanical property and glass forming ability of Zr-based metallic glasses (MGs). Detailed parameters of medium range ordering (MRO) that constitutes the structural heterogeneity, including the type, size, and volume fraction of MRO domains determined using 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, directly correlate with the ductility and glass forming ability of Zr-Cu-Co-Al MGs. Mesoscale deformation simulation incorporating the experimentally determined MRO confirms that the diverse types and sizes of MRO …
We report nano-scale mechanical heterogeneity of a metallic glass characterized by dynamic atomic force microscopy. Apparent energy dissipation with the variation of ~12%, originating from non-uniform distribution of local viscoelasticity, was characterized. The correlation length of heterogeneous viscoelasticity was measured to be ~2.5{\pm}0.3 nm, which is well consistent with the dimension of shear transformation zones for plastic flow. This study provides the first experimental observation on the nano-scale mechanical heterogeneity in a metallic glass, and may fill the gap between atomic mo…
Cycling of a metallic glass between ambient and cryogenic temperatures can induce higher-energy states characteristic of glass formation on faster cooling. This rejuvenation, unexpected because it occurs at small macroscopic strains and well below the temperatures of thermally induced structural change, is important, for example, in improving plasticity. Molecular-dynamics simulations elucidate the mechanisms by which thermal cycling can induce relaxation (reaching lower energy) as well as rejuvenation. Thermal cycling, over tens of cycles, drives local atomic rearrangements progressively eras…
Studying the primary α- and secondary β-relaxation process has contributed significantly to the understanding of the structure and rheology of metallic glasses. In this letter, we report on a third relaxation mechanism indicated by a maximum in the loss modulus at low temperatures, which we term γ-relaxation. Contrary to the α- and β-relaxation mechanisms, this irreversible, low energy excitation causes a macroscopic rejuvenation, which we assign to non-affine atomic rearrangements in the matrix that are driven by thermal stresses during cooling. Observed in three different glassy alloys, the …
An atomistic understanding of annealing embrittlement is a longstanding issue for metallic glasses, which is still lacking due to the insurmountable gap between the thermal history of atomic models and laboratory-made samples. Here, based on a thermal-cycling annealing method that can vary the effective quenching rate over ten orders of magnitude, we perform an atomistic study of the ductile-brittle transition in a ternary model metallic glass, which can be keyed to the annealing embrittlement in bulk metallic glasses. We reveal that thermal annealing can effectively obliterate thermally activ…
To better understand the surprising low-frequency vibrational modes in structural glasses, we study the spectra of a large ensemble of sparse random matrices where disorder is controlled by the distribution of bond weights and network coordination. We find $D(ω)$ has three regimes: a very-low-frequency regime that can be predicted analytically using extremal statistics, an intermediate regime with quasi-localized modes, and a plateau with $D(ω) \sim ω^0$. In the special case of uniform bond weights, the intermediate regime displays $D(ω) \sim ω^4$, independent of network coordination and syste…
The relaxation dynamics of glass-forming systems shows a multitude of features that are absent in normal liquids, such as non-exponential relaxation and a strong temperature-dependence of the relaxation time. Connecting these dynamic properties to the microscopic structure of the system is very challenging because of the presence of the structural disorder. Here we use computer simulations of a metallic glass-former to establish such a connection. By probing the temperature and wave-vector dependence of the intermediate scattering function we find that the relaxation dynamics of the glassy mel…

Using inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations on a model Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass, we show that transverse phonons persist well into the high-frequency regime, and can be detected at large momentum transfer. Furthermore, the apparent peak width of the transverse phonons was found to follow the static structure factor. The one-to-one correspondence, which was demonstrated for both Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass and a 3-dimensional Lennard-Jones model glass, suggests a universal correlation between the phonon dynamics and the underlying disordered structure. This remarkable corre…
We present x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements of the atomic dynamics in a Zr67Ni33 metallic glass, well below its glass transition temperature. We find that the decay of the density fluctuations can be well described by compressed, thus faster than exponential, correlation functions which can be modeled by the well-known Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function with a shape exponent β larger than one. This parameter is furthermore found to be independent of both waiting time and wave-vector, leading to the possibility to rescale all the correlation functions to a single master curve.…
We use X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy to investigate the structural relaxation process in a metallic glass on the atomic length scale. We report evidence for a dynamical crossover between the supercooled liquid phase and the metastable glassy state, suggesting different origins of the relaxation process across the transition. Furthermore, using different cooling rates we observe a complex hierarchy of dynamic processes characterized by distinct aging regimes. Strong analogies with the aging dynamics of soft glassy materials, such as gels and concentrated colloidal suspensions, point at …

Glasses are featured with a disordered amorphous structure, being opposite to crystals that are constituted by periodic lattices. In this study we report that the exceptional thermodynamic and kinetic stability of an ultra-stable binary ZrCu metallic glass, fabricated by high-temperature physical vapor deposition, originates from ubiquitous crystal-like medium range order (MRO) constituted by Voronoi polyhedron ordering with well-defined local translational symmetry beyond nearest atomic neighbors. The crystal-like MRO significantly improves the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the glass…
Micro- or minor alloying of metallic glasses is of technological interest. An originally ductile Pd-based monolithic bulk metallic glass (Pd$_{40}$Ni$_{40}$P$_{20}$) was selectively manipulated by additions of Fe or Co. The alloying effects were extreme, showing either exceptional ductility upon Co addition or immediate catastrophic failure upon Fe addition when tested under uniaxial compression or 3-point bending. The amorphous structure was characterized prior to deformation with respect to its medium-range order (MRO) using variable resolution fluctuation electron microscopy (VR-FEM). We ob…
We have combined the dynamical mean field theories of the Mott transition and the spin glass in infinite dimensions and derived a metallic spin-glass state from a random spin-fermion model.
Low-frequency Raman and inelastic neutron scattering of amorphous bis-phenol A polycarbonate is measured at low temperature, and compared. The vibrational density of states and light-vibration coupling coefficient are determined. The frequency dependences of these parameters are explained by propagating vibration modes up to an energy of about 1 meV, and fracton-like modes in more cohesive domains at higher energies. The vibrational dynamics is in agreement with a disorder in the glass, which is principally of bonding or of elasticity instead of density.
The attenuation rate of vibrational excitations in various metallic liquids and glasses has been reported to change from the quadratic dependence on wavevector at low wavevectors to the linear dependence at high wavevectors. However, the origin of this behavior is not clear. Here, the analysis of this phenomenon through molecular dynamics is presented for prototypical metallic liquids, Cu56Zr44 and Fe. It is shown that the crossover wavevector is strongly correlated with the structural coherence length characterizing coarse-grained density correlations. We suggest that the linear dependence is…
