We show the correlation between nanoscale structural heterogeneity and mechanical property and glass forming ability of Zr-based metallic glasses (MGs). Detailed parameters of medium range ordering (MRO) that constitutes the structural heterogeneity, including the type, size, and volume fraction of MRO domains determined using 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, directly correlate with the ductility and glass forming ability of Zr-Cu-Co-Al MGs. Mesoscale deformation simulation incorporating the experimentally determined MRO confirms that the diverse types and sizes of MRO can significantly influence the MGs' mechanical behavior.
The existence of nanoscale ductility during the fracture of silicate glasses remains controversial. Here, based on molecular dynamics simulations coupled with topological constraint theory, we show that nano-ductility arises from the spatial heterogeneity of the atomic network's rigidity. Specifically, we report that localized floppy modes of deformation in under-constrained regions of the glass enable plastic deformations of the network, resulting in permanent change in bond configurations. Ultimately, these heterogeneous plastic events percolate, thereby resulting in a non-brittle mode of fr…
In metallic glasses a clear correlation had been established between plasticity or ductility with the Poisson ratio and alternatively the ratio of the elastic bulk modulus to the shear modulus, K/G. Such a correlation between these two macroscopic mechanical properties is intriguing and is challenging to explain from the dynamics on a microscopic level. Such a microscopic explanation is provided in this paper.
Understanding, predicting and eventually improving the resistance to fracture of silicate materials is of primary importance to design new glasses that would be tougher, while retaining their transparency. However, the atomic mechanism of the fracture in amorphous silicate materials is still a topic of debate. In particular, there is some controversy about the existence of ductility at the nano-scale during the crack propagation. Here, we present simulations of the fracture of three archetypical silicate glasses using molecular dynamics. We show that the methodology that is used provide realis…
The effect of tensile stress applied during cooling of binary glasses on the potential energy states and mechanical properties is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study the three-dimensional binary mixture that was first annealed near the glass transition temperature and then rapidly cooled under tension into the glass phase. It is found that at larger values of the applied stress, the liquid glass former freezes under higher strain and its potential energy is enhanced. For a fixed cooling rate, the maximum tensile stress that can be applied during cooling is reduced upon …
We formulate a generic concept model for the deformation of a locally disordered, macroscopically homogeneous material which undergoes irreversible strain softening during plastic deformation. We investigate the influence of the degree of microstructural heterogeneity and disorder on the concomitant strain localization process (formation of a macroscopic shear band). It is shown that increased microstructural heterogeneity delays strain localization and leads to an increase of the plastic regime in the macroscopic stress-strain curves. The evolving strain localization patterns are characterize…

Micro- or minor alloying of metallic glasses is of technological interest. An originally ductile Pd-based monolithic bulk metallic glass (Pd$_{40}$Ni$_{40}$P$_{20}$) was selectively manipulated by additions of Fe or Co. The alloying effects were extreme, showing either exceptional ductility upon Co addition or immediate catastrophic failure upon Fe addition when tested under uniaxial compression or 3-point bending. The amorphous structure was characterized prior to deformation with respect to its medium-range order (MRO) using variable resolution fluctuation electron microscopy (VR-FEM). We ob…
The common notion suggests that metallic glasses (MGs) are a homogeneous solid at the macroscopic scale; however, recent experiments and simulations indicate that MGs contain nano-scale elastic heterogeneities. Despite the fundamental importance of these findings, a quantitative understanding is still lacking for the local elastic heterogeneities intrinsic to MGs. On the basis of Eshelby's theory, here we develop a micromechanical model that correlates the properties of the local elastic heterogeneities, being very difficult to measure experimentally, to the measurable overall elastic properti…
Cryogenic rejuvenation in metallic glasses reported in Ketov et al 's experiment (Nature(2015)524,200) has attracted much attention, both in experiments and numerical studies. The atomic mechanism of rejuvenation has been conjectured to be related to the heterogeneity of the glassy state, but the quantitative evidence is still elusive. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations of a model metallic glass to investigate the heterogeneity in the local thermal expansion. We then combine the resulting spatial distribution of thermal expansion with a continuum mechanics calculation to infer the inte…
All solids yield under sufficiently high mechanical loads. Below yield, the mechanical responses of all disordered solids are nearly alike, but above yield every different disordered solid responds in its own way. Brittle systems can shatter without warning, like ordinary window glass, or exhibit strain localization prior to fracture, like metallic or polymeric glasses. Ductile systems, e.g. foams like shaving cream or emulsions like mayonnaise, can flow indefinitely with no strain localization. While there are empirical strategies for tuning the degree of strain localization, there is no fram…
Residual stress engineering is very widely used in the design of new advanced lightweight materials. For metallic glasses the attention has been on structural changes and rejuvenation processes. High energy scanning X-ray diffraction strain mapping reveals large elastic fluctuations in metallic glasses after deformation under triaxial compression. Microindentation hardness mapping hints to a competing hardening-softening mechanism after compression and further reveals the complementary effects of stress and structure modulation. Transmission electron microscopy proves that structure modulation…
Some aspects of how sound waves travel through disordered solids are still unclear. Recent work has characterized a feature of disordered solids which seems to influence vibrational excitations at the mesoscales, local elastic heterogeneity. Sound waves propagation has been demonstrated to be strongly affected by inhomogeneous mechanical features of the materials which add to the standard anharmonic couplings, amounting to extremely complex transport properties at finite temperatures. Here, we address these issues for the case of a simple atomic glass former, by Molecular Dynamics computer sim…
An empirical potential that has been widely used to perform molecular dynamics studies on the fracture behavior of FeP metallic glasses is shown to exhibit spinodal decomposition in the composition range commonly studied. The phosphorous segregation induces a transition from ductility to brittleness. During brittle fracture the atomically sharp crack tip propagates along a percolating path with higher P concentration. This embrittlement is observed to occur over a wide range of chemical compositions, and toughness decreases linearly with the degree of compositional segregation over the entire …
When metallic glasses (MGs) are subjected to mechanical loads, the plastic response of atoms is non-uniform. However, the extent and manner in which atomic environment signatures present in the undeformed structure determine this plastic heterogeneity remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that novel site environment features that characterize interstice distributions around atoms combined with machine learning (ML) can reliably identify plastic sites in several Cu-Zr compositions. Using only quenched structural information as input, the ML-based plastic probability estimates ("quench-in softnes…
Cycling of a metallic glass between ambient and cryogenic temperatures can induce higher-energy states characteristic of glass formation on faster cooling. This rejuvenation, unexpected because it occurs at small macroscopic strains and well below the temperatures of thermally induced structural change, is important, for example, in improving plasticity. Molecular-dynamics simulations elucidate the mechanisms by which thermal cycling can induce relaxation (reaching lower energy) as well as rejuvenation. Thermal cycling, over tens of cycles, drives local atomic rearrangements progressively eras…
Amorphous materials exhibit peculiar mechanical and vibrational properties, including non-affine elastic responses and excess vibrational states, i.e., the so-called boson peak. For polymer glasses, these properties are considered to be affected by the bending rigidity of the constituent polymer chains. In our recent work [Tomoshige, et al., Sci. Rep. 9 19514 (2019)], we have revealed simple relationships between the variations of vibrational properties and the global elastic properties: the response of the boson peak scales only with that of the global shear modulus. This observation suggests…
Glasses behave as solids due to their long relaxation time; however the origin of this slow response remains a puzzle. Growing dynamic length scales due to cooperative motion of particles are believed to be central to the understanding of both the slow dynamics and the emergence of rigidity. Here, we provide experimental evidence of a growing dynamical heterogeneity length scale that increases with increasing waiting time in an aging colloidal glass of Laponite. The signature of heterogeneity in the dynamics follows from dynamic light scattering measurements in which we study both the rotation…
The dynamics of structural relaxation in a model polymer glass subject to spatially-homogeneous, time-periodic shear deformation is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a coarse-grained bead-spring model of short polymer chains below the glass transition temperature. It is found that at small strain amplitudes, the segmental dynamics is nearly reversible over about $10^4$ cycles, while at strain amplitudes above a few percent, polymer chains become fully relaxed after a hundred cycles. At the critical strain amplitude, the transition from slow to fast relaxation dynamics…
We report nano-scale mechanical heterogeneity of a metallic glass characterized by dynamic atomic force microscopy. Apparent energy dissipation with the variation of ~12%, originating from non-uniform distribution of local viscoelasticity, was characterized. The correlation length of heterogeneous viscoelasticity was measured to be ~2.5{\pm}0.3 nm, which is well consistent with the dimension of shear transformation zones for plastic flow. This study provides the first experimental observation on the nano-scale mechanical heterogeneity in a metallic glass, and may fill the gap between atomic mo…
We review the Random First Order Transition Theory of the glass transition, emphasizing the experimental tests of the theory. Many distinct phenomena are quantitatively predicted or explained by the theory, both above and below the glass transition temperature $T_g$. These include: the viscosity catastrophe and heat capacity jump at $T_g$, and their connection; the non-exponentiality of relaxations and their correlation with the fragility; dynamic heterogeneity in supercooled liquids owing to the mosaic structure; deviations from the Vogel-Fulcher law, connected with strings or fractral cooper…
Fully bioresorbable polymer matrix composites have long been considered as potential orthopaedic implant materials, however their combination of mechanical strength, stiffness, ductility and bioresorbability is also attractive for cardiac stent applications. This work investigated reinforcement of polylactide-based polymers with phosphate glasses, addressing key drawbacks of current polymer stents, and examined the often-neglected evolution of structure and mechanical properties during degradation. Incorporation of 15 - 30wt.% phosphate glass led to modulus increases of up to 80% under simulat…
In supercooled liquids, vitrification generally suppresses crystallization. Yet some glasses can still crystallize despite the arrest of diffusive motion. This ill-understood process may limit the stability of glasses, but its microscopic mechanism is not yet known. Here we present extensive computer simulations addressing the crystallization of monodisperse hard-sphere glasses at constant volume (as in a colloid experiment). Multiple crystalline patches appear without particles having to diffuse more than one diameter. As these patches grow, the mobility in neighbouring areas is enhanced, cre…
We report results of statistical and dynamic analysis of the serrated stress-time curves obtained from compressive constant strain-rate tests on two metallic glass samples with different ductility levels in an effort to extract hidden information in the seemingly irregular serrations. Two distinct types of dynamics are detected in these two alloy samples. The stress-strain curve corresponding to the less ductile $Zr_{65}Cu_{15}Ni_{10}Al_{10}$ alloy is shown to exhibit finite correlation dimension and a positive Lyapunov exponent, suggesting that the underlying dynamics is chaotic. In contrast,…
Glass is highly sensitive to surface flaws generated by contact. Surface cracks threaten both its mechanical strength and visual aspect. Recent trends in glass functionalisation by grafting or coating lend an even more prominent role to the surface. For these reasons, the glass surface mechanics, which couples surface physico-chemistry with mechanical response, must be considered in details to optimize glass processing and products. We review a few recent advances in the field of glass surface mechanics, with special emphasis on the local ductility of silicate glasses and the mechanical stabil…
Understanding ductility or brittleness of monolithic bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) requires detailed knowledge of the amorphous structure. The medium range order (MRO) of ductile Pd$_{40}$Ni$_{40}$P$_{20}$ and brittle Zr$_{52.5}$Cu$_{17.9}$Ni$_{14.6}$Al$_{10}$Ti$_5$ (Vit105) was characterized prior to and after notched 3-point bending tests using variable-resolution fuctuation electron microscopy. Here we show the presence of a second larger MRO correlation length in the ductile material which is not present in the brittle material. A comparison with literature suggests that the larger correlat…
Sheared multi-component bulk metallic glasses are characterized by both chemical and structural disorder that define their properties. We investigate the behavior of the local, microstructural elastic modulus across the plastic yielding transition in six Ni-based multi-component glasses, that are characterized by compositional features commonly associated with solid solution formability. We find that elastic modulus fluctuations display consistent percolation characteristics pointing towards universal behavior across chemical compositions and overall yielding sharpness characteristics. Elastic…
Recent experiments provide evidence for density variations along shear bands (SB) in metallic glasses with a length scale of a few hundreds nanometers. Via molecular dynamics simulations of a generic binary glass model, here we show that this is strongly correlated with variations of composition, coordination number, viscosity and heat generation. Individual shear events along the SB-path show a mean distance of a few nanometers, comparable to recent experimental findings on medium range order. The aforementioned variations result from these localized perturbations, mediated by elasticity.
At temperatures well below their glass transition, the deformation properties of bulk metallic glasses are characterised by a sharp transition from elasticity to plasticity, a reproducible yield stress, and an approximately linear decrease of this stress with increasing temperature. In the present work it shown that when the well known properties of the under-cooled liquid regime, in terms of the underlying potential energy landscape, are assumed to be also valid at low temperature, a simple thermal activation model is able to reproduce the observed onset of macro-scopic yield. At these temper…
The atomistic structure of metallic glasses is closely related to properties such as strength and ductility. Here, Ni1-xBx metallic glass nanoparticles of two different sizes are compressed under quasi-hydrostatic high-pressure conditions in order to understand structural changes under stress. The structural changes in the nanoparticles were tracked using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ambient pressure pair-distribution functions generated from XRD showed that the smaller sized nanoparticles had a more compact amorphous structure with lower coordination number. XRD showed t…
The chemistry (composition and bonding information) of metallic glasses (MGs) is at least as important as structural topology for understanding their properties and production/processing peculiarities. This article reports a machine learning (ML)-based approach that brings an unprecedented "big picture" view of chemical bond strengths in MGs of a prototypical alloy system. The connection between electronic structure and chemical bonding is given by crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) analysis; within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The stated comprehensive overview is …

The bulk and surface dynamics of Cu50Zr50 metallic glass were studied using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. As the alloy undergoes cooling, it passes through liquid, supercooled, and glassy states. While bulk dynamics showed a marked slowing down prior to glass formation, with increasing activation energy, the slowdown in surface dynamics was relatively subtle. The surface exhibited a lower glass transition temperature than the bulk, and the dynamics preceding the transition were accurately described by a temperature-independent activation energy. Surface dynamics were much fast…
Amorphous silica deforms viscoplastically at elevated temperatures, as is common for brittle glasses. The key mechanism of viscoplastic deformation involves interatomic bond switching, which is known to be a thermally activated process. In this study, through systematic in-situ compression tests by scanning electron microscopy, the viscoplastic deformation of amorphous silica is observed without thermal activation. Furthermore, ductility does not increase monotonically with acceleration voltage and current density of the SEM e-beam but is maximized by a factor of three at a specific accelerati…
Relaxation of shear bands in a Pd40Ni40P20 bulk metallic glass was investigated by a combination of radiotracer diffusion and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, allowing to determine for the first time the effective activation enthalpy of diffusion along shear bands in a deformed glass. The shear bands relax during annealing below the glass transition temperature and the diffusion enhancement reveals unexpectedly a non-monotonous behavior. The development of shear bands and the subsequent relaxation of stresses after switching off the shearing are characterized on microscopic to mesoscopic l…

Metallic glasses have so far attracted considerable attention for their applications as bulk materials. However, new physics and applications often emerge by dimensional reduction from three dimension (3D) to two dimension (2D). Here, we study, by molecular dynamics simulations, how the liquid-to-glass transition of a binary Cu50Zr50 MG is affected by spatial dimensionality. We find clear evidence that crystal-like structural ordering controls both dynamic heterogeneity and slow dynamics, and thus plays a crucial role in the formation of the 2DMG. Although the 2DMG reproduces the dynamical beh…
