The relaxation dynamics and the vibrational spectra of amorphous solids, such as metal alloys, have been intensely investigated as well separated topics in the past. The aim of this review is to summarize recent results in both these areas in an attempt to establish, or unveil, deeper connections between the two phenomena of relaxation and vibration. Theoretical progress in the area of slow relaxation dynamics of liquid and glassy systems and in the area of vibrational spectra of glasses and liquids is reviewed. After laying down a generic modelling framework to connect vibration and relaxation, the physics of metal alloys is considered where the emergence of power-law exponents has been identified both in the vibrational density of states (VDOS) as well as in density correlations. Also, theoretical frameworks which connect the VDOS to the relaxation behaviour and mechanical viscoelastic response in metallic glasses are reviewed. The same generic interpretative framework is then applied to the case of molecular glass formers where the emergence of stretched-exponential relaxation in dielectric relaxation can be put in quantitative relation with the VDOS by means of memory-function approaches. Further connections between relaxation and vibration are provided by the study of phonon linewidths in liquids and glasses, where a natural starting point is given by hydrodynamic theories. Finally, an agenda of outstanding issues including the appearance of compressed exponential relaxation in the intermediate scattering function of experimental and simulated systems (metal alloys, colloidal gels, jammed packings) is presented in light of available (or yet to be developed) mathematical models, and compared to non-exponential behaviour measured with macroscopic means such as mechanical spectroscopy/rheology.
A density-functional-theory based approach to efficiently compute numerically exact vibrational free energies - including anharmonicity - for chemically complex multicomponent alloys is developed. It is based on a combination of thermodynamic integration and a machine-learning potential. We demonstrate the performance of the approach by computing the anharmonic free energy of the prototypical five-component VNbMoTaW refractory high entropy alloy.
A model is tested to rapidly evaluate the vibrational properties of alloys with site disorder. It is shown that length-dependent transferable force constants exist, and can be used to accurately predict the vibrational entropy of substitutionally ordered and disordered structures in Au-Cu, Au-Pd, and Cu-Pd. For each relevant force constant, a length- dependent function is determined and fitted to force constants obtained from first-principles pseudopotential calculations. We show that these transferable force constants can accurately predict vibrational entropies of L1$_{2}$-ordered and disord…
An amorphous Se$_{0.80}$S$_{0.20}$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying was studied by Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and optical absorption spectroscopy, and also through reverse Monte Carlo simulations of its total structure factor and EXAFS data. Its vibrational modes, optical gap and structural properties as average interatomic distances and average coordination numbers were determined and compared to those found for an amorphous Se$_{0.90}$S$_{0.10}$ alloy. The results indicate that coordination numbers, interatomic distances and a…
The lattice dynamics for NiCo, NiFe, NiFeCo, NiFeCoCr, and NiFeCoCrMn medium to high entropy alloy have been investigated using the DFT calculation. The phonon dispersions along three different symmetry directions are calculated by the weighted dynamical matrix (WDM) approach and compared with the supercell approach and inelastic neutron scattering. We could correctly predict the trend of increasing of the vibrational entropy by adding the alloys and the highest vibrational entropy in NiFeCoCrMn high entropy alloy by WDM approach. The averaged first nearest neighbor (1NN) force constants betwe…
A method to investigate anharmonicity, vibrational anisotropy and thermal expansion using correlated mean-square relative displacements (MSRD) parallel and perpendicular to the interatomic bonds obtained only from Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) analysis based on cumulant expansion is suggested and applied to an amorphous Ni$_{46}$Ti$_{54}$ alloy produced by mechanical alloying. From EXAFS measurements taken on Ni and Ti K edges at several temperatures, the thermal behavior of $\text{MSRD}_\parallel$, $\text{MSRD}_\perp$ and of the cumulants $C_1^*$, $C_2^*$ and $C_3^*$ of the…
In crystals, molecules thermally vibrate around the periodic lattice sites. Vibrational motions are well understood in terms of phonons, which carry heat and control heat transport. The situation is notably different in disordered solids, where vibrational excitations are not phonons and can be even localized. Recent numerical work has established the concept of elastic heterogeneity: disordered solids show inhomogeneous local mechanical response. Clearly, the heterogeneous nature of elastic properties strongly influences vibrational and thermal properties, and it is expected to be the origin …
The lattice dynamics in substitutional disordered alloys with constituents having large size differences is driven by strong disorder in masses, inter-atomic force constants and local environments. In this letter, a new first-principles approach based on special quasi random structures and itinerant coherent potential approximation to compute the phonon spectra of such alloys is proposed and applied to Ni$_{0.5}$Pt$_{0.5}$ alloy. The agreement between our results with the experiments is found to be much better than for previous models of disorder due to an accurate treatment of the interplay o…
We have developed a methodology to study the thermodynamics of order-disorder transformations in n-component substitutional alloys that combines nonequilibrium methods, which can efficiently compute free energies, with Monte Carlo simulations, in which configurational and vibrational degrees of freedom are simultaneously considered on an equal footing basis. Furthermore, by appropriately constraining the system, we were able to compute the contributions to the vibrational entropy due to bond proportion, atomic size mismatch, and bulk volume effects. We have applied this methodology to calculat…
An explanation of the anomalous concentration dependence of diffuse scattering from the Pt-V alloy system (splitting of the (100) short-range order intensity peak with increasing Pt content) is proposed. The effect is attributed to the competition between the interaction and self-energy curvatures. A similar temperature behaviour is predicted.
The ordered structure of MgO-ZnO alloy system is a versatile tunable optical material promising for diverse optoelectronic applications. However, isovalent and isostructural alloy compositions of MgO-ZnO are generally unstable at ambient conditions. Using state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} evolutionary simulations, we predict and study the properties of stable phases of MgO-ZnO. We establish the dynamical stability of the predicted crystal structures through the phonon and Raman spectroscopy. Detailed analyses of two of the most stable structures reveal highly tunable properties that could be…
We present here a calculation of the configuration averaged optical conductivity of random binary alloys CuAu and AgAu. Our formulation is based on the augmented space formalism proposed by Mookerjee [J. Phys. C : Solid State Phys. {\bf 6} 1340 (1973)] and the optical conductivity is obtained directly through a recursive procedure suggested by Viswanath and Müller ["The user friendly recursion method", Troisieme Cycle de la Physique, en Suisse Romande (1993)].
Short-range ordering (SRO) tendency for disordered alloys is considered as competition between chemical ordering and geometric (mainly, difference in atomic radius for constituents) effects. Especially for multicomponent (including the so-called high entropy alloys (HEAs) near equiatomic composition), it has been considered as difficult to systematically characterize the SRO tendency only by geometric effects, due mainly to the fact that (i) chemical effects typically plays significant role, (ii) near equiatomic composition, we cannnot classify which elements belong to solute or solvent, and (…
The different contributions to the entropy change linked to the austenite-martensitic transition in a Ni-Mn-Sn metamagnetic shape memory alloy have been determined by combining different experimental techniques. The vibrational contribution has been inferred from the vibrational density of states of both the martensitic and austenite phases. This has been accomplished by combining time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements and ab-initio calculations. Further, the electronic part of the entropy change has also been calculated. Since the martensitic transformation takes place between two par…
A longstanding limitation of first-principles calculations of substitutional alloy phase diagrams is the difficulty to account for lattice vibrations. A survey of the theoretical and experimental literature seeking to quantify the impact of lattice vibrations on phase stability indicates that this effect can be substantial. Typical vibrational entropy differences between phases are of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 k_B/atom, which is comparable to the typical values of configurational entropy differences in binary alloys (at most 0.693 k_B/atom). This paper describes the basic formalism underlying ab…
We present here an augmented space recursive technique in the k-representation which include diagonal, off-diagonal and the environmental disorder explicitly : an analytic, translationally invariant, multiple scattering theory for phonons in random binary alloys. We propose the augmented space recursion (ASR) as a computationally fast and accurate technique which will incorporate configuration fluctuations over a large local environment. We apply the formalism to $Ni_{55}Pd_{45}$, $Ni_{88}Cr_12}$ and $Ni_{50}Pt_{50}$ alloys which is not a random choice. Numerical results on spectral functions, …
We present here an optimized and parallelized version of the {\sl augmented space recursion code} for the calculation of the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk disordered alloys, surfaces and interfaces, either flat, corrugated or rough, and random networks. Applications have been made to bulk disordered alloys to benchmark our code.
We here study electronic structure and magnetic properties of disordered CoPd and CoPt alloys using Augmented Space Recursion technique coupled with the tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. Effect of short range ordering present in disordered phase of alloys on electronic and magnetic properties has been discussed. We present results for magnetic moments, Curie temperatures and electronic band energies with varying degrees of short range order for different concentrations of Co and try to understand and compare the magnetic properties and ordering phenomena in these sy…
Crystalline Co$_{x}$Cu$_{1-x}$ alloys show interesting magnetic behavior over the entire concentration regime. We here present a fully self- consistent first principles electronic structure studies of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the system. We present results for the variation of density of states, magnetic moment, spin susceptibility and Curie temperature.
The current interest in compositionally complex alloys including so called high entropy alloys has caused renewed interest in the general problem of solute hardening. It has been suggested that this problem can be addressed by treating the alloy as an effective medium containing a random distribution of dilatation and compression centers representing the volumetric misfit of atoms of different species. The mean square stresses arising from such a random distribution can be calculated analytically, their spatial correlations are strongly anisotropic and exhibit long-range tails with third-order…
As molecular dynamics is increasingly used to characterize non-crystalline materials, it is crucial to verify that the numerical model is accurate enough, consistent with experimental data and can be used to extract various characteristics of disordered systems. In most cases the only derived property used to test the "realism" of the models has been the radial distribution function. We report extensive ab-initio simulation of hydrogenated amorphous silicon that demonstrates that although agreement with the RDF is a necessary requirement, this protocol is insufficient for the validation of a m…
The electronic structure and magnetic properties of disordered Fe$_{x}$Pd$_{100-x}$ alloys $(50 < x < 85)$ are investigated in the framework of density functional theory using the full potential local orbital method (FPLO). Disorder is treated in the coherent potential approximation (CPA). Our calculations explain the experimental magnetization data. The origin of the tetragonal distortion in the Fe-Pd magnetic shape memory alloys is found to be a Jahn-Teller like effect which allows the system to reduce its band energy in a narrow composition range. Prospects for an optimization of the alloys…
To investigate the formation of Mg-based long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure, we systematically study the preference of the short-range order (SRO) in metastable disordered phases of Mg-RE-Zn (RE = Y, La, Er, Ho, Dy, Tb) and Mg-Gd-Al ternary alloy systems through first-principles calculation. RE-Zn (RE = Y, Er, Ho, Dy, Tb) and Gd-Al pair clusters' probability showed the tendency of increasing. In contrast, La-Zn pair clusters' probability is not increasing, whose system dose not form LPSO structure. This preference of SRO in disordered phases of Mg-based ternary alloys certainly indi…
We develop a first-principles procedure for the individual evaluation of the intrinsic, side-jump, and skew-scattering contributions to the anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$. This method is based on the different microscopic conductive processes of each origin of $σ_{xy}$ in the Kubo--Bastin formula. We also present an approach for implementing this scheme in the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method with the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The validity of this calculation method is demonstrated for disordered FePt and FePd alloys. We find that the estimated value…
The possibility of disappearance of the diffuse-intensity peak splitting induced by the Fermi surface (i.e., of coalescence of the intensity maxima) with decreasing temperature is predicted. The underlying mechanism is the compensation of the reciprocal-space curvatures of the self-energy and the interaction. The theory also describes similar results obtained earlier for two low-dimensional models with competing interactions. The coalescence is compared with the recently observed "thermal" splitting in Pt-V which can be explained in the same way.
Atomistic simulations are used to study segregation-induced intergranular film formation in Cu-Zr and Cu-Nb alloys. While Cu-Zr forms structurally disordered or amorphous films, ordered films comprised of a second phase usually precipitate in Cu-Nb, with a critical nucleation size of ~1 nm below which the ordered phase cannot form. While the ordered film is retained at high temperature for a low energy Σ11 (113) boundary, a disordering transition is observed for a high energy Σ5 (310) boundary at low dopant concentrations. Finally, the effect of free surfaces on dopant segregation and intergra…
Amorphous solids or glasses are known to exhibit stretched-exponential decay over broad time intervals in several of their macroscopic observables: intermediate scattering function, dielectric relaxation modulus, time-elastic modulus etc. This behaviour is prominent especially near the glass transition. In this Letter we show, on the example of dielectric relaxation, that stretched-exponential relaxation is intimately related to the peculiar lattice dynamics of glasses. By reformulating the Lorentz model of dielectric matter in a more general form, we express the dielectric response as a funct…
The local magnetic moments and hyperfine magnetic fields (HFF) in the ordered alloys Fe_{15}Sn and Fe_{15}Si are calculated with the first-principles full-potential linear augmented plane wave (FP LAPW) method. The results are compared with the experimental data on Fe-M (M=Si, Sn) disordered alloys at small metalloid concentration. The relaxation of the lattice around the impurity and its influence on the quantities under consideration are studied. The mechanism of the local magnetic moment formation is described. It is proved that the main distinction between these alloys is connected with th…
We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known exper…
We present results of systematic fully relativistic first-principles calculations of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of a disordered and partially ordered tetragonal Fe-Co alloy using the coherent potential approximation (CPA). This alloy has recently become a promising system for thin ferromagnetic films with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We find that existing theoretical approaches to homogeneous random bulk Fe-Co alloys, based on a simple virtual crystal approximation (VCA), overestimate the maximum MAE values obtained in the CPA by a factor of four. This pronounced dif…
High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are designed by mixing multiple metallic species in nearly the same amount to obtain crystalline or amorphous materials with exceptional mechanical properties. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the role of positional and compositional disorder in determining the low-frequency vibrational properties of CrMnFeCoNi HEAs. Our results show that the expected dependence of the density of states on the frequency as $D(ω)\simω^4$ is recovered for amorphous HEAs and is also observed for partially crystallized alloys with deviations that depend on the de…
First-principles calculations are used in order to investigate phonon anomalies in non-magnetic and magnetic Heusler alloys. Phonon dispersions for several systems in their cubic L2$\mathrm{_1}$ structure were obtained along the [110] direction. We consider compounds which exhibit phonon instabilities and compare them with their stable counterparts. The analysis of the electronic structure allows us to identify the characteristic features leading to structural instabilities. The phonon dispersions of the unstable compounds show that, while the acoustic modes tend to soften, the optical modes d…
A first principles density functional based linear response theory (the so called Density Functional Perturbation theory \cite{dfpt}) has been combined separately with two recently developed formalism for a systematic study of the lattice dynamics in disordered binary alloys. The two formalisms are the Augmented space recursion (ASR) and the Itinerant coherent potential approximation (ICPA). The two different theories (DFPT-ASR and DFPT-ICPA) systematically provides a hierarchy of improvements upon the earlier single site based theories (like CPA etc.) and includes non-local correlations in th…
We study the magnetic Compton profile (MCP) of the disordered Fe$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$ and of the ordered FeNi alloys and discuss the interplay between structural disorder and electronic correlations. The Coherent Potential Approximation is employed to model the substitutional disorder within the single-site approximation, while local electronic correlations are captured with the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. Comparison with the experimental data reveals the limitation of local spin-density approximation in low momentum region, where we show that including local but dynamic correlations the experim…
Experimental investigation as well as theoretical calculations, of the Fe-partial phonon density-of-states (DOS) for nominally Fe_52.5Cr_47.5 alloy having (a) alpha- and (b) sigma-phase structure were carried out. The former at sector 3-ID of the Advanced Photon Source, using the method of nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, and the latter with the direct method [K. Parlinski et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {78, 4063 (1997)]. The characteristic features of phonon DOS, which differentiate one phase from the other, were revealed and successfully reproduced by the theory. Various data pertinent…
A general method is proposed for calculating a fully k-dependent, continuous, and causal spectral function A(k,E) within the recently introduced nonlocal version of the coherent-potential approximation (NLCPA). The method involves the combination of both periodic and anti-periodic solutions to the associated cluster problem and also leads to correct bulk quantities for small cluster sizes. We illustrate the method by investigating the Fermi surface of a two-dimensional alloy. Dramatically, we find a smeared electronic topological transition not predicted by the conventional CPA.
A reliable prediction of interatomic force constants in disordered alloys is an outstanding problem. This is due to the need for a proper treatment of multisite (atleast pair) correlation within a random environment. The situation becomes even more challenging for systems with large difference in atomic size and mass. We propose a systematic density functional theory (DFT) based study to predict the ab-initio force constants in random alloys. The method is based on a marriage between special quasirandom structures (SQS) and the augmented space recursion (ASR) to calculate phonon spectra, densi…

We have analyzed by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy the atomic and electronic structure of monolayers of 1T-VxPt1-xSe2 alloys grown by molecular beam epitaxy on epitaxial graphene substrates. We have focused on the composition range (0.1<x<0.35) where ferromagnetic behaviour has recently been demonstrated. For low Pt concentration, (x=0.07 and x=0.21), small domains (a few nanometres in diameter) exhibiting the characteristic superstructure of the charge density wave (CDW) state of pristine VSe2 monolayer remain visible on most of the sample surface. Thus alloying prese…
Local, or short-range, order in disordered alloys is an important and exciting phenomenon which is quantified in electron, X-ray and neutron scattering experiments. It is discussed in many excellent reviews and books, as well as in the multitude of original research papers. This relatively short review of the subject does not attempt to discuss all aspects of the problem of local correlations in alloys. In particular, we will not touch such issues as multiatom (cluster) interactions, static displacements and vibrations of alloy atoms, partially ordered, multicomponent or amorphous alloys. As a…
We present an ab initio theory of transport quantities of metallic ferromagnets developed in the framework of the fully relativistic tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The approach is based on the Kubo-Streda formula for the conductivity tensor, on the coherent potential approximation for random alloys, and on the concept of interatomic electron transport. The developed formalism is applied to pure 3d transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) and to random Ni-based ferromagnetic alloys (Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Mn). High values of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), found for Ni-rich alloys, ar…
Using a combination of density-functional perturbation theory and the itinerant coherent potential approximation, we study the effects of atomic relaxation on the inelastic incoherent neutron scattering cross sections of disordered Ni$_{50}$Pt$_{50}$ alloys. We build on previous work, where empirical force constants were adjusted {\it ad hoc} to agree with experiment. After first relaxing all structural parameters within the local-density approximation for ordered NiPt compounds, density-functional perturbation theory is then used to compute phonon spectra, densities of states, and the force c…
The development of quantitative models for radiation damage effects in iron, iron alloys and steels, particularly for the high temperature properties of the alloys, requires understanding of magnetic interactions, which control the phase stability of ferritic-martensitic, ferritic, and austenitic steels. In this work, disordered magnetic configurations of pure iron and Fe-Cr alloys are investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) formalism, in the form of constrained non-collinear magnetic calculations, with the objective of creating a database of atomic magnetic moments and forces actin…
Lowest-order quantum perturbation theory (Fermi's golden rule) for phonon-disorder scattering has been used to predict thermal conductivities in several semiconducting alloys with surprising success given its underlying hypothesis of weak and dilute disorder. In this paper, we explain how this is possible by focusing on the case of maximally mass-disordered Mg$_2$Si$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. We use a Chebyshev polynomials Green's function method that allows a full treatment of disorder on very large systems (tens of millions of atoms) to probe individual phonon linewidths and frequency-resolved thermal t…
Au-Fe alloys are of immense interest due to their biocompatibility, anomalous hall conductivity, and applications in various medical treatment. However, irrespective of the method of preparation, they often exhibit a high-level of disorder, with properties sensitive to the thermal or magnetic annealing temperatures. We calculate lattice dynamical properties of Au$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$ alloys using density functional theory methods, where, being a multisite property, reliable interatomic force constant (IFC) calculations in disordered alloys remain a challenge. We follow a two fold approach: (1) an acc…
High lattice thermal conductivity in half-Heusler alloys has been the major bottleneck in thermoelectric applications. Disordered half-Heusler alloys could be a plausible alternative to this predicament. In this paper, utilizing first-principles simulations, we have demonstrated the low lattice thermal conductivity in two such phases, NbFe$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$Sn and TaFe$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$Sn, in comparison to well-known half-Heusler alloy TiCoSb. We trace the low thermal conductivity to their short phonon lifetime, originating from the interaction among acoustic and low-lying optical phonons. We r…
We present small angle neutron scattering (SANS) data collected on polycrystalline Ni$_{1-x}$V$_x$ samples with $x\geq0.10$ with confirmed random atomic distribution. We aim to determine the relevant length scales of magnetic correlations in ferromagnetic samples with low critical temperatures $T_c$ that show signs of magnetic inhomogeneities in magnetization and $μ$SR data. The SANS study reveals signatures of long-range order and coexistence of short-range magnetic correlations in this randomly disordered ferromagnetic alloy. We show the advantages of a polarization analysis in identifying t…
Diffusion of atoms in solids is one of the most fundamental kinetic processes that ultimately governs many materials properties. Here, we report on a combined first-principles and kinetic Monte Carlo study of macroscopic diffusion properties of disordered Ti-Ta alloys over the entire composition range. Using simple cluster expansion model Hamiltonians parametrized on density functional theory data, we compute transport properties explicitly including local interactions between the two atomic species and compare them with the non-interacting diffusion model for disordered, random alloys. Surpri…
Numerical calculations of lattice thermal conductivity are reported for the binary alloys NiPd and NiPt. The present work is a continuation of an earlier paper by us [PRB, 72, 214207 (2005)]which had developed a theoretical framework for the calculation of configuration-averaged lattice thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity in disordered alloys. The formulation was based on the augmented space theorem combined with a scattering diagram technique. In this paper we shall show dependence of the lattice thermal conductivity on a series of variables like phonon frequency, temperature and all…

We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloy systems in ordered and disordered phases. The influence of various exchange-correlation functionals on values of equilibrium lattice parameters and magnetic moments in ordered Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloys have been studied using linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The electronic structure calculations for the disordered alloys have been carried out using augmented space recursion technique in the framework of tight binding linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The effect of short range order has also been…
A coherent description of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is presented that is applicable to pure as well as disordered alloy systems by treating all sources of the AHE on equal footing. This is achieved by an implementation of the Kubo-Středa equation using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method in combination with the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory. Applications to the pure elemental ferromagnets bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni led to results in full accordance with previous work. For the alloy systems fcc-Fe$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ and fcc-Ni$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ …
We here study electronic structure and magnetic properties of bcc Co$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$, Cr$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ and Mn$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ in their ferromagnetic phases using Augmented Space Recursion technique coupled with tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. We make a systematic study of magnetic properties like magnetic moment and Curie temperature and try to draw some conclusions on their variation across the row of 3-{\it d} transition metal series in periodic table using arguments based on effects like charge transfer, exchange splitting and hybridization.
Besides permitting an accurate determination of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition temperature and the characteristic temperatures for the beginning and end of the growth of martensite (austenite) phase at the expense of austenite (martensite) phase while cooling (heating), the results of an extensive ac susceptibility, sound velocity and internal friction investigation of the thermoelastic martensitic transformation in melt-quenched (site-disordered) Ni55Fe20Al25 alloy provide a clear experimental evidence for the following. Irreversible thermoelastic changes (thermal hysteres…
The effect of disorder on lattice vibrational modes has been a topic of interest for several decades. In this work, we employ a Green's function based approach, namely the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA), to investigate phonons in mass disordered systems. Detailed benchmarks with previous exact calculations are used to validate the method in a wide parameter space. An extension of the method, namely the typical medium DCA (TMDCA), is used to study Anderson localization of phonons in three dimensions. We show that, for binary isotopic disorder, lighter impurities induce localized modes be…
We present here a formulation for the calculation of the configuration averaged lattice thermal conductivity in random alloys. Our formulation is based on the augmented-space theorem, introduced by one of us, combined with a generalized diagrammatic technique. The diagrammatic approach simplifies the problem of including effects of disorder corrections to a great extent. The approach allows us to obtain an expression for the effective heat current in case of disordered alloys, which in turn is used in a Kubo-Greenwood type formula for the thermal conductivity. We show that disorder scattering …
