In this paper, we show that the diagonal of a high-dimensional sample covariance matrix stemming from $n$ independent observations of a $p$-dimensional time series with finite fourth moments can be approximated in spectral norm by the diagonal of the population covariance matrix. We assume that $n,p\to \infty$ with $p/n$ tending to a constant which might be positive or zero. As applications, we provide an approximation of the sample correlation matrix ${\mathbf R}$ and derive a variety of results for its eigenvalues. We identify the limiting spectral distribution of ${\mathbf R}$ and construct an estimator for the population correlation matrix and its eigenvalues. Finally, the almost sure limits of the extreme eigenvalues of ${\mathbf R}$ in a generalized spiked correlation model are analyzed.
A consistent kernel estimator of the limiting spectral distribution of general sample covariance matrices was introduced in Jing, Pan, Shao and Zhou (2010). The central limit theorem of the kernel estimator is proved in this paper.
In this paper, we consider the separable covariance model, which plays an important role in wireless communications and spatio-temporal statistics and describes a process where the time correlation does not depend on the spatial location and the spatial correlation does not depend on time. We established a central limit theorem for linear spectral statistics of general separable sample covariance matrices in the form of $\mathbf S_n=\frac1n\mathbf T_{1n}\mathbf X_n\mathbf T_{2n}\mathbf X_n^*\mathbf T_{1n}^*$ where $\mathbf X_n=(x_{jk})$ is of $m_1\times m_2$ dimension, the entries $\{x_{jk}, j…
This note presents some central limit theorems for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices in the form of suitable translations of results by Gustavsson and O'Rourke on the limiting behavior of eigenvalues inside the bulk of the semicircle law for Gaussian matrices. The theorems are then extended to large families of Wigner matrices by the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Similar results are developed for covariance matrices.
In this paper we prove the concavity of the $k$-trace functions, $A\mapsto (\text{Tr}_k[\exp(H+\ln A)])^{1/k}$, on the convex cone of all positive definite matrices. $\text{Tr}_k[A]$ denotes the $k_{\mathrm{th}}$ elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of $A$. As an application, we use the concavity of these $k$-trace functions to derive tail bounds and expectation estimates on the sum of the $k$ largest (or smallest) eigenvalues of a sum of random matrices.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for finite-dimensional vectors of linear eigenvalue statistics of submatrices of Wigner random matrices under the assumption that test functions are sufficiently smooth. We connect the asymptotic covariance to a family of correlated Gaussian Free Fields.
The purpose of this note is to establish a Central Limit Theorem for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on the correct aymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson, and its extension to large families of Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin.
We survey some recent progress on rigorously establishing the universality of various spectral statistics of Wigner random matrix ensembles, focusing in particular on the Four Moment Theorem and its applications.
Spectral measures of Wigner matrices are investigated. The Wigner semicircle law for spectral measures is proved. Regard this as the law of large number, the central limit theorem for moments spectral measure is also derived. The proof is based on moment method and combinatorial method.
We establish a large deviation theorem for the empirical spectral distribution of random covariance matrices whose entries are independent random variables with mean 0, variance 1 and having controlled forth moments. Some new properties of Laguerre polynomials are also given.
We consider a class of elliptic random matrices which generalize two classical ensembles from random matrix theory: Wigner matrices and random matrices with iid entries. In particular, we establish a central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of real elliptic random matrices under the assumption that the test functions are analytic. As a corollary, we extend the results of Rider and Silverstein to real iid random matrices.
We give abstract versions of the large deviation theorem for the distribution of zeros of polynomials and apply them to the characteristic polynomials of Hermitian random matrices. We obtain new estimates related to the local semi-circular law for the empirical spectral distribution of these matrices when the 4th moments of their entries are controlled.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for linear statistics of the eigenvalues of band random matrices provided $\sqrt{n} \ll b_n \ll n$ and test functions are sufficiently smooth.
We consider $N$ by $N$ deformed Wigner random matrices of the form $X_N=H_N+A_N$, where $H_N$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $A_N$ is a deterministic real bounded diagonal matrix. We prove a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $X_N$ for all mesoscopic scales both in the spectral bulk and at regular edges where the global eigenvalue density vanishes as a square root. The method relies on the characteristic function method in [47], local laws for the Green function of $X_N$ in [3, 46, 51] and analytic subordination properties of the…
In this article, we will consider Wishart Matrices with correlated entries, but with a strictly log-concave law. It has been shown by A.Pajor and L.Pastur that the empirical measures of such matrices converges. We will show, under some symmetry and convergence hypotheses, that in this case the central limit theorem for linear statistics holds around their limit, and deduce the convergence of the support to the support of the limiting measure. We also provide the convergence of the Expectation and the Covariance.
We show central limit theorems (CLT) for the Stieltjes transforms or more general analytic functions of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, including entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws and entries with moments exploding with the dimension, as in the adjacency matrices of Erdös-Rényi graphs. For the second model, we also prove a central limit theorem of the moments of its empirical eigenvalues distribution. The limit laws are Gaussian, but unlike to the case of standard Wigner matrices, the normalization is the one of the classical CLT for independent r…
We propose a boundary regularity condition for the $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued subordination functions in free probability to prove the local limit theorem and delocalization of eigenvectors for polynomials in two random matrices. We prove this through estimating the pair of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued approximate subordination functions for the sum of two $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued random matrices $γ_1\otimes C_N+γ_2\otimes U_N^*D_NU_N$, where $C_N$, $D_N$ are deterministic diagonal matrices, and $U_N$ is Haar unitary.
In this paper, we explain the dependance of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of a Deformed Wigner model with respect to the eigenvectors of the perturbation matrix. We exhibit quite general situations that will give rise to universality or non universality of the fluctuations.
We study stochastic properties of the norm cocycle associated with iid products of positive matrices. We obtain the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) with rate o(n 1/p) under the optimal condition of a moment or order p > 2 and the Berry-Esseen theorem with rate O(1/ $\sqrt$ n) under the optimal condition of a moment of order 3. The results are also valid for the matrix norm. For the matrix coefficients, we also have the ASIP but we obtain only partial results for the Berry-Esseen theorem. The proofs make use of coupling coefficients that surprisingly decay exponentially fast to 0 while …
We form a sequence of oblong matrices by evaluating an integrable vector-valued function along the orbit of an ergodic dynamical system. We obtain an almost sure asymptotic result for the permanents of those matrices. We also give an application to symmetric means.
Motivated by the stochastic block model, we investigate a class of Wigner-type matrices with certain block structures, and establish a CLT for the corresponding linear spectral statistics via the large-deviation bounds from local law and the cumulant expansion formula. We apply the results to the stochastic block model. Specifically, a class of renormalized adjacency matrices will be block-Wigner-type matrices. Further, we show that for certain estimator of such renormalized adjacency matrices, which will be no longer Wigner-type but share long-range non-decaying weak correlations among the en…
We consider two classical ensembles of the random matrix theory: the Wigner matrices and sample covariance matrices, and prove Central Limit Theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics under rather weak (comparing with results known before) conditions on the number of derivatives of the test functions and also on the number of the entries moments. Moreover, we develop a universal method which allows one to obtain automatically the bounds for the variance of differentiable test functions, if there is a bound for the variance of the trace of the resolvent of random matrix. The method is applicable …
Motivated by a random matrix theory model from wireless communications, we define random operator-valued matrices as the elements of $L^{\infty-}(Ω,{\mathcal F},{\mathbb P}) \otimes M_d({\mathcal A})$ where $(Ω,{\mathcal F},{\mathbb P})$ is a classical probability space and $({\mathcal A},φ)$ is a non-commutative probability space. A central limit theorem for the mean $M_d(\mathbb{C})$-valued moments of these random operator-valued matrices is derived. Also a numerical algorithm to compute the mean $M_d({\mathbb C})$-valued Cauchy transform of operator-valued semicircular mixtures is analyzed.
Let $(S_n)_n$ be the random process on $\mathbb R$ driven by the product of i.i.d. non-negative random matrices and $τ$ its exit time from $]0, +\infty[$. By using the adapted strategy initiated by D. Denisov and V. Wachtel, we obtain an asymptotic estimate and bounds of the probability that the process $(S_k)_k$ remains non negative up to time $n$ and simultaneously belongs to some compact set $[b, b+\ell ]\subset \mathbb R^{*+}$ at time $n$.
Consider the random walk on the $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices with ones on the diagonal and elements over $\mathbb{F}_p$ where we pick a row at random and either add it or subtract it from the row directly above it. The main result of this paper is to prove that the dependency of the mixing time on $p$ is $p^2$. This is proven by combining super-character theory and comparison theory arguments.
It is a classical result of Wigner that for an hermitian matrix with independent entries on and above the diagonal, the mean empirical eigenvalue distribution converges weakly to the semicircle law as matrix size tends to infinity. In this paper, we prove analogs of Wigner's theorem for random matrices taken from all infinitesimal versions of classical symmetric spaces. This is a class of models which contains those studied by Wigner and Dyson, along with seven others arising in condensed matter physics. Like Wigner's, our results are universal in that they only depend on certain assumptions a…
The paper proves several limit theorems for linear eigenvalue statistics of overlapping Wigner and sample covariance matrices. It is shown that the covariance of the limiting multivariate Gaussian distribution is diagonalized by choosing the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind as the basis for the test function space. The covariance of linear statistics for the Chebyshev polynomials of sufficiently high degree depends only on the first two moments of the matrix entries. Proofs are based on a graph-theoretic interpretation of the Chebyshev linear statistics as sums over non-backtracking cyc…
Given an i.i.d. sequence $\{A_n(ω)\}_{n\ge 1}$ of invertible matrices and a random matrix $B(ω)$, we consider the random matrix sequences inductively defined by $S_n(ω) = A_n(ω)S_{n-1}(ω)$ and $T_n(ω) = B(σ^{n-1}ω)S_{n-1}(ω)+A_n(ω)T_{n-1}(ω)$, and study several limit theorems involving $T_n(ω)$ as well as the asymptotic behaviour of the action of $T_n(ω)$ on the projective space and on the unit circle.
An approximate Spielman-Teng theorem for the least singular value $s_n(M_n)$ of a random $n\times n$ square matrix $M_n$ is a statement of the following form: there exist constants $C,c >0$ such that for all $η\geq 0$, $\Pr(s_n(M_n) \leq η) \lesssim n^{C}η+ \exp(-n^{c})$. The goal of this paper is to develop a simple and novel framework for proving such results for discrete random matrices. As an application, we prove an approximate Spielman-Teng theorem for $\{0,1\}$-valued matrices, each of whose rows is an independent vector with exactly $n/2$ zero components. This improves on previous work…
Starting from an n-by-n matrix of zeros, choose uniformly random zero entries and change them to ones, one-at-a-time, until the matrix becomes invertible. We show that with probability tending to one as n tends to infinity, this occurs at the very moment the last zero row or zero column disappears. We prove a related result for random symmetric Bernoulli matrices, and give quantitative bounds for some related problems. These results extend earlier work by Costello and Vu [arXiv:math/0606414].
For the eigenvalues of principal submatrices of stochastically evolving Wigner matrices, we construct and study the edge scaling limit: a random decreasing sequence of continuous functions of two variables, which at every point has the distribution of the Airy point process. The analysis is based on the methods developed by Soshnikov to study the extreme eigenvalues of a single Wigner matrix.

A local strict comparison theorem and some converse comparison theorems are proved for reflected backward stochastic differential equations under suitable conditions.
We study random vectors of the form $(\operatorname {Tr}(A^{(1)}V),...,\operatorname {Tr}(A^{(r)}V))$, where $V$ is a uniformly distributed element of a matrix version of a classical compact symmetric space, and the $A^{(ν)}$ are deterministic parameter matrices. We show that for increasing matrix sizes these random vectors converge to a joint Gaussian limit, and compute its covariances. This generalizes previous work of Diaconis et al. for Haar distributed matrices from the classical compact groups. The proof uses integration formulas, due to Collins and Śniady, for polynomial functions on th…
We consider $n\times n$ real symmetric and Hermitian Wigner random matrices $n^{-1/2}W$ with independent (modulo symmetry condition) entries and the (null) sample covariance matrices $n^{-1}X^*X$ with independent entries of $m\times n$ matrix $X$. Assuming first that the 4th cumulant (excess) $κ_4$ of entries of $W$ and $X$ is zero and that their 4th moments satisfy a Lindeberg type condition, we prove that linear statistics of eigenvalues of the above matrices satisfy the central limit theorem (CLT) as $n\to\infty$, $m\to\infty$, $m/n\to c\in[0,\infty)$ with the same variance as for Gaussian …
Let $μ$ be a probability measure on $\text{GL}_d(\mathbb{R})$ and denote by $S_n:= g_n \cdots g_1$ the associated random matrix product, where $g_j$ are i.i.d. with law $μ$. Under the assumptions that $μ$ has a finite exponential moment and generates a proximal and strongly irreducible semigroup, we prove a Berry-Esseen bound with the optimal rate $O(1/\sqrt n)$ and a general Local Limit Theorem for the coefficients of $S_n$.
We consider $n\times n$ random matrices $M_{n}=\sum_{α=1}^{m}{τ_{α}}\mathbf{y}_{α}\otimes \mathbf{y}_{α}$, where $τ_{α}\in \mathbb{R}$, $\{\mathbf{y}_{α}\}_{α=1}^{m}$ are i.i.d. isotropic random vectors of $\mathbb{R}^n$, whose components are not necessarily independent. It was shown in arXiv:0710.1346 that if $m,n\rightarrow \infty$, $m/n\rightarrow c\in \lbrack 0,\infty )$, the Normalized Counting Measures of $\{τ_{α}\}_{α=1}^{m}$ converge weakly and $\{\mathbf{y}_α\}_{α=1}^m$ are \textit{good} (see corresponding definition), then the Normalized Counting Measures of eigenvalues of $M_{n}$ co…
We consider random matrices of the form $H_N=A_N+U_N B_N U^*_N$, where $A_N$, $B_N$ are two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and $U_N$ is a Haar distributed random unitary matrix. We establish a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H_N$ on all mesoscopic scales inside the regular bulk of the spectrum. The proof is based on studying the characteristic function of the linear eigenvalue statistics, and consists of two main steps: (1) generating Ward identities using the left-translation-invariance of the Haar measure, along with a local law for the r…
Let $ν\in M^1([0,\infty[)$ be a fixed probability measure. For each dimension $p\in\b N$, let $(X_n^p)_{n\ge1}$ be i.i.d. $\b R^p$-valued radial random variables with radial distribution $ν$. We derive two central limit theorems for $ \|X_1^p+...+X_n^p\|_2$ for $n,p\to\infty$ with normal limits. The first CLT for $n>>p$ follows from known estimates of convergence in the CLT on $\b R^p$, while the second CLT for $n<<p$ will be a consequence of asymptotic properties of Bessel convolutions. Both limit theorems are considered also for $U(p)$-invariant random walks on the space of $p\times q$ matri…
We consider random products of $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ matrices that depend on a parameter in a non-uniformly hyperbolic regime. We show that if the dependence on the parameter is monotone then almost surely the random product has upper (limsup) Lyapunov exponent that is equal to the value prescribed by the Furstenberg Theorem (and hence positive) for all parameters, but the lower (liminf) Lyapunov exponent is equal to zero for a dense $G_δ$ set of parameters of zero Hausdorff dimension. As a byproduct of our methods, we provide a purely geometrical proof of Spectral Anderson Localization for disc…
In a paper that appeared in 2010, C. Tone proved a multivariate central limit theorem for some strictly stationary random fields of random vectors satisfying certain mixing conditions. The "normalization" of a given "partial sum" (or "block sum") involved matrix multiplication by a "standard -1/2 power" of its covariance matrix (a symmetric, positive definite matrix), and the limiting multivariate normal distribution had the identity matrix as its covariance matrix. The mixing assumptions in Tone's result implicitly imposed an upper bound on the ratios of the largest to the smallest eigenvalue…
We present a probabilistic analysis of two Krylov subspace methods for solving linear systems. We prove a central limit theorem for norms of the residual vectors that are produced by the conjugate gradient and MINRES algorithms when applied to a wide class of sample covariance matrices satisfying some standard moment conditions. The proof involves establishing a four moment theorem for the so-called spectral measure, implying, in particular, universality for the matrix produced by the Lanczos iteration. The central limit theorem then implies an almost-deterministic iteration count for the iter…
Bessel processes $(X_{t,k})_{t\ge0}$ in $N$ dimensions are classified via associated root systems and multiplicity constants $k\ge0$. They describe interacting Calogero-Moser-Suther\-land particle systems with $N$ particles and are related to $β$-Hermite and $β$-Laguerre ensembles. Recently, several central limit theorems were derived for fixed $t>0$, fixed starting points, and $k\to\infty$. In this paper we extend the CLT in the A-case from start in 0 to arbitrary starting distributions by using a limit result for the corresponding Bessel functions. We also determine the eigenvalues and eigen…
