In his 1984 Memoir of the American Mathematical Society, George Andrews defined two families of functions, $ϕ_k(n)$ and $cϕ_k(n),$ which enumerate two types of combinatorial objects which Andrews called generalized Frobenius partitions. As part of that Memoir, Andrews proved a number of Ramanujan--like congruences satisfied by specific functions within these two families. In the years that followed, numerous other authors proved similar results for these functions, often with a view towards a specific choice of the parameter $k.$ In this brief note, our goal is to identify an {\bf infinite} family of values of $k$ such that $ϕ_k(n)$ is even for all $n$ in a specific arithmetic progression; in particular, our primary goal in this work is to prove that, for all positive integers $\ell,$ all primes $p\geq 5,$ and all values $r,$ $0 < r < p,$ such that $24r+1$ is a quadratic nonresidue modulo $p,$
$$
ϕ_{p\ell-1}(pn+r) \equiv 0 \pmod{2}
$$ for all $n\geq 0.$
Our proof of this result is truly elementary, relying on a lemma from Andrews' Memoir, classical $q$--series results, and elementary generating function manipulations. Such a result, which holds for infinitely many values of $k,$ is rare in the study of arithmetic properties satisfied by generalized Frobenius partitions, primarily because of the unwieldy nature of the generating functions in question.
Motivated by a question of Lovejoy \cite{lovejoy}, we show that three-colored Frobenius partition function $\c3$ and related arithmetic fuction $\cc3$ vanish modulo some powers of 5 in certain arithmetic progressions.
Since their introduction by Andrews, generalized Frobenius partitions have interested a number of authors, many of whom have worked out explicit formulas for their generating functions in specific cases. This has uncovered interesting combinatorial structure and led to proofs of a number of congruences. In this paper, we show how Andrews' generating functions can be cast in the framework of Eichler and Zagier's Jacobi forms. This reformulation allows us to compute explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions (and in fact provides formulas for further functions…
Let $k$ and $n$ be positive integers. Let $cϕ_{k}(n)$ denote the number of $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partitions of $n$ and $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$ be the generating function of $cϕ_{k}(n)$. In this article, we study $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$ using the theory of modular forms and discover new surprising properties of $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$.
Let $a(n)$ defined by $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a(n)q^n := \prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{(1-q^{3n})(1-q^n)^3}.$ In this note, we prove that for every non-negative integer $n$, a(15n+6) \equiv 0\pmod{5}, a(15n+12) \equiv 0\pmod{5}. As a corollary, we obtained some results of Ono
We show how Andrews' generating functions for generalized Frobenius partitions can be understood within the theory of Eichler and Zagier as specific coefficients of certain Jacobi forms. This reformulation leads to a recursive process which yields explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions in terms of infinite $q$-products. In particular, we show that specific examples of our result easily reestablish previously known formulas, and we describe new congruences, both conjectural and proven, in additional cases. The modular structure of Jacobi forms indicates t…
Given a set of positive integers A = {a_1,...,a_n}, we study the number p_A (t) of nonnegative integer solutions (m_1,...,m_n) to m_1 a_1 + ... m_n a_n = t. We derive an explicit formula for the polynomial part of p_A.
Let $cϕ_{k}(n)$ be the $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partition function. By employing the generating function of $cϕ_{6}(3n+1)$ found by Hirschhorn, we prove that $cϕ_{6}(27n+16)\equiv 0$ (mod 243). This confirms a conjecture of E.X.W. Xia. We also find a congruence relation $cϕ_{6}(81n+61) \equiv 3 cϕ_{6}(9n+7)$ (mod 243). Moreover, we show that $cϕ_{6}(81n+61) \equiv 0$ (mod 81), $cϕ_{6}(243n+142) \equiv 0$ (mod 243) and $cϕ_{6}(729n+ 547) \equiv 0$ (mod 243). We further conjecture that for $n\ge 0$, $cϕ_{6}(243n+142) \equiv 0$ (mod 729).
Let $N\geq 1$ be squarefree with $(N,6)=1$. Let $cϕ_N(n)$ denote the number of $N$-colored generalized Frobenius partition of $n$ introduced by Andrews in 1984. We prove $$ cϕ_N(n)= \sum_{d \mid N} N/d \cdot P\left( \frac{ N}{d^2}n - \frac{N^2-d^2}{24d^2} \right) + b(n)$$ where $C(z) := (q;q)^N_\infty\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} b(n) q^n$ is a cusp form in $S_{(N-1)/2} (Γ_0(N),χ_N)$. This extends and strengthens earlier results of Kolitsch and Chan-Wang-Yan treating the case when $N$ is a prime. As an immediate application, we obtain an asymptotic formula for $cϕ_N(n)$ in terms of the classical partiti…
Let $cϕ_{k}(n)$ be the number of $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partitions of $n$. We establish some infinite families of congruences for $cϕ_{3}(n)$ and $cϕ_{9}(n)$ modulo arbitrary powers of 3, which refine the results of Kolitsch. For example, for $k\ge 3$ and $n\ge 0$, we prove that \[cϕ_{3}\Big(3^{2k}n+\frac{7\cdot 3^{2k}+1}{8}\Big) \equiv 0 \pmod{3^{4k+5}}.\] We give two different proofs to the congruences satisfied by $cϕ_{9}(n)$. One of the proofs uses an relation between $cϕ_{9}(n)$ and $cϕ_{3}(n)$ due to Kolitsch, for which we provide a new proof in this paper.
The Frobenius symbol was first introduced in 1900 by Frobenius as a way to encode an integer partition. In 1941, motivated by the modular representation theory of the symmetric group, Nakayama introduced the idea of a p-core partition, for p prime, using hook removals. In the following decade, Robinson, Littlewood, Staal and Farahat codified the $p$-quotient of such a partition, using variations of the star diagram. Since the 1970s, the convention has been to build up the theory of both core and quotients with the abacus construction, first introduced by G. James. In this paper we return to th…
The partition function is known to exhibit beautiful congruences that are often proved using the theory of modular forms. In this paper, we study the extent to which these congruence results apply to the generalized Frobenius partitions defined by Andrews. In particular, we prove that there are infinitely many congruences for $cϕ_k(n)$ modulo $\ell,$ where $\gcd(\ell,6k)=1,$ and we also prove results on the parity of $cϕ_k(n).$ Along the way, we prove results regarding the parity of coefficients of weakly holomorphic modular forms which generalize work of Ono.
We obtain a combinatorial proof of a surprising weighted partition equality of Berkovich and Uncu. Our proof naturally leads to a formula for the number of partitions with a given parity of the smallest part, in terms of S(i), the number of partitions of i into distinct parts with even rank minus the number with odd rank, for which there is an almost closed formula by Andrews, Dyson and Hickerson. This method of calculating the number of partitions of n with a given parity of the smallest part is practical and efficient.
In these two companion papers, we give infinite families of partition identities which generalise Primc's and Capparelli's identities, and study their consequences on the theory of crystal bases of the affine Lie algebra $A_{n-1}^{(1)}.$ In this first paper, we focus on combinatorial aspects. We give a $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity by constructing a $n^2 \times n^2$ matrix of difference conditions, Primc's original identities corresponding to $n=2$ and $n=3$. While most coloured partition identities in the literature connect partitions with difference conditions to partitio…
Let q be an odd power of a prime p and let A/Fq be a supersingular abelian variety of dimension g. We show that if p>2g+1, then the characteristic polynomial of the q-Frobenius is an even polynomial. This generalizes the well-known result on the vanishing of the trace of the p-Frobenius when p>3 for supersingular elliptic curves over Fp.
A partition statistic ` crank' gives combinatorial interpretations for Ramanujan's famous partition congruences. In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula, Ramanujan type congruences, and q-series identities that the number of partitions with even crank $M_e(n)$ minus the number of partitions with odd crank $M_o(n)$ satisfies. For example, we show that $M_e(5n+4)-M_o(5n+4)\equiv 0 \pmod 5.$ We also determine the exact values of $M_e(n)-M_o(n)$ in case of partitions into distinct parts, which are at most two and zero for infinitely many $n$.
Let $p_{o}(n)$ (resp. $p_{e}(n)$) denote the number of partitions of $n$ with more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts). Recently, Kim, Kim, and Lovejoy proved that $p_{o}(n)>p_{e}(n)$ for all $n>2$ and conjectured that $d_{o}(n)>d_{e}(n)$ for all $n>19$ where $d_{o}(n)$ (resp. $d_{e}(n)$) denote the number of partitions into distinct parts having more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts). In this paper we provide combinatorial proofs for both the result and the conjecture of Kim, Kim and Lovejoy. In addition, we show that if we restrict the …
In his 1984 AMS Memoir, George Andrews defined the family of $k$--colored generalized Frobenius partition functions. These are denoted by $cϕ_k(n)$ where $k\geq 1$ is the number of colors in question. In that Memoir, Andrews proved (among many other things) that, for all $n\geq 0,$ $cϕ_2(5n+3) \equiv 0\pmod{5}.$ Soon after, many authors proved congruence properties for various $k$--colored generalized Frobenius partition functions, typically with a small number of colors. Work on Ramanujan--like congruence properties satisfied by the functions $cϕ_k(n)$ continues, with recent works completed b…
A Goellnitz-Gordon partition is one in which the parts differ by at least 2, and where the inequality is strict if a part is even. Let Q_i(n) denote the number of partitions of n into distinct parts not congruent to i mod 4. By attaching weights which are powers of 2 and imposing certain parity conditions on Goellnitz-Gordon partitions, we show that these are equinumerous with Q_i(n) for i=0,2. These complement results of Goellnitz on Q_i(n) for i=1,3, and of Alladi who provided a uniform treatment of all four Q_i(n), i=0,1,2,3, in terms of weighted partitions into parts differing by >= 4. Our…
Inspired by Andrews' 2-colored generalized Frobenius partitions, we consider certain weighted 7-colored partition functions and establish some interesting Ramanujan-type identities and congruences. Moreover, we provide combinatorial interpretations of some congruences modulo 5 and 7. Finally, we study the properties of weighted 7-colored partitions weighted by the parity of certain partition statistics.
Recently, Hirschhorn and the first author considered the parity of the function $a(n)$ which counts the number of integer partitions of $n$ wherein each part appears with odd multiplicity. They derived an effective characterization of the parity of $a(2m)$ based solely on properties of $m.$ In this note, we quickly reprove their result, and then extend it to an explicit characterization of the parity of $a(n)$ for all $n\not\equiv 7 \pmod{8}.$ We also exhibit some infinite families of congruences modulo 2 which follow from these characterizations. We conclude by discussing the case $n\equiv 7 …
We study the Frobenius problem: given relatively prime positive integers a_1,...,a_d, find the largest value of t (the Frobenius number g(a_1,...,a_d)) such that m_1 a_1 + ... m_d a_d = t has no solution in nonnegative integers m_1,...,m_d. We introduce a method to compute upper bounds for g(a_1,a_2,a_3), which seem to grow considerably slower than previously known bounds. Our computations are based on a formula for the restricted partition function, which involves Dedekind-Rademacher sums, and the reciprocity law for these sums.
In this paper, we present a generalization of one of the theorems in [G. E. Andrews, Partitions with parts separated by parity, \textit{Annals of Combinatorics} \textbf{23}(2019), 241 - 248], and give its bijective proof. Further variations of related partition functions are studied resulting in a number of interesting identities.
Following the method of combinatorial telescoping for alternating sums given by Chen, Hou and Mu, we present a combinatorial telescoping approach to partition identities on sums of positive terms. By giving a classification of the combinatorial objects corresponding to a sum of positive terms, we establish bijections that lead a telescoping relation. We illustrate this idea by giving a combinatorial telescoping relation for a classical identity of MacMahon. Recently, Andrews posed a problem of finding a combinatorial proof of an identity on the q-little Jacobi polynomials which was derived bas…
We define an extension of parity from the integers to the rational numbers. Three parity classes are found -- even, odd and `none'. Using the 2-adic valuation, we partition the rationals into subgroups with a rich algebraic structure. The natural density provides a means of distinguishing the sizes of countably infinite sets. The Calkin-Wilf tree has a remarkably simple parity pattern, with the sequence `odd/none/even' repeating indefinitely. This pattern means that the three parity classes have equal natural density in the rationals. A similar result holds for the Stern-Brocot tree.
We give a complete characterization of the parity of $b_8(n)$, the number of $8$-regular partitions of $n$. Namely, we prove that $b_8(n)$ is odd or even depending on whether or not we have the factorisation $24n+7=p^{4a+1}m^2$, for some prime $p\nmid m$ and $a\ge 0$.
Improving on some results of J.-L. Nicolas \cite {Ndeb}, the elements of the set ${\cal A}={\cal A}(1+z+z^3+z^4+z^5)$, for which the partition function $p({\cal A},n)$ (i.e. the number of partitions of $n$ with parts in ${\cal A}$) is even for all $n\geq 6$ are determined. An asymptotic estimate to the counting function of this set is also given.
