A self-consistent hybrid model of standing and moving striations was developed for low-current DC discharges in noble gases. We introduced the concept of surface diffusion in phase space described by a tensor diffusion in the nonlocal Fokker-Planck kinetic equation for electrons in the collisional plasma. Electrons diffuse along surfaces of constant total energy between energy jumps in inelastic collisions with atoms. Numerical solutions of the 1d1u kinetic equation for electrons were obtained by two methods and coupled to ion transport and Poisson solver. We studied the dynamics of striation formation in Townsend and glow discharges in Argon gas at low discharge currents using a two-level excitation-ionization model and a full chemistry model, which includes stepwise and Penning ionization. Standing striations appeared in Townsend and glow discharges at low currents. Moving striations were obtained for glow discharges at currents exceeding a critical value. They originate at the anode and propagate towards the cathode. We have obtained two types of moving striations with the two-level and full chemistry models, which resemble the s and p striations previously observed in the experiments. Simulations indicate that processes in the anode region could control moving striations in the positive column plasma. The developed model helps clarify the nature of standing and moving striations in DC discharges of noble gases at low discharge currents and low gas pressures.
The electron kinetics in moving and standing striations in direct current and radio-frequency discharges is studied. The discharge current is such that the thermalizing electron-electron collisions are negligible and the hydrodynamic description of electron component of plasma is not valid. Therefore, the one-dimensional hybrid model is used which models the electron component by particle method, while the ions are described using the drift-diffusion approximation. It is obtained that the electron transport is non-local in space. The electron energy distribution in both discharges is of non-eq…
We conducted experimental studies and computer simulations of standing striations in capacitive coupled plasma in Argon gas. Standing striations were observed at frequencies 3.6, 8.4 and 19.0 MHz, in a pressure range 0.05-10 Torr, tube radius R=1.1 cm, for a certain range of discharge currents (plasma densities). Numerical simulations revealed similar nature of standing striations in CCP and moving striations in DC discharges under similar discharge conditions. Comparison of computer simulations with experimental observations helped clarify the nature of these striations. The non-linear depend…
A hybrid kinetic-fluid model is used to study ionization waves (striations) in a low-current plasma column of DC discharges in noble gases. Coupled solutions of a kinetic equation for electrons, a drift-diffusion equation of ions, and a Poisson equation for the electric field are obtained to clarify the nature of plasma stratification in the positive column and near-electrode effects. A simplified two-level excitation-ionization model is used for the conditions when the nonlinear effects due to stepwise ionization, gas heating, and Coulomb interactions among electrons are negligible. It is con…
The specific form of one electrode capacitive discharge was studied in long tubes filled with high purity neon or argon at pressure 1-4 Torr. The main feature of the discharge is the low rate (less than 10 kHz) of the voltage pulses of given polarity which are applied to only one electrode of the tube, while another one remains free or missing. This type of the discharge was named one-electrode discharge (OED), and seems not to be described in previous studies. The discharge is observed as a glowing plasma column which occupies either entire tube or its part dependent on actual voltage amplitu…
It is shown that under the definite regime of interaction of the acoustic waves with low-temperature, partially ionized plasma it is possible to change the intensity of some spectral lines of atomic argon. It is shown also, that the dependence of the intensities of these spectral lines on the intensity of the acoustic wave has a hysteresis behavior.
This study is designed to explore the two dimensional temperature maps of the atmospheric argon discharge consisting of pin-to-plane electrodes supplied by a high voltage DC source. The rotational and vibrational temperatures are calculated using nitrogen emissions collected by the high resolution spectrometer and high sensitive intensified charge coupled device (ICCD). The rotational temperature varies from 1558.15 K to 26…
A novel kind of electron beam sustained discharge is presented in which a 12keV electron beam is combined with a 2.45GHz microwave power to excite argon gas at atmospheric pressure in a continuous mode of operation. Optical emission spectroscopy is performed over a wide wavelength range from the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to the near infrared (NIR). Several effects which modify the emission spectra compared to sole electron beam excitation are observed and interpreted by the changing plasma parameters such as electron density, electron temperature and gas temperature.
A one-dimensional Particle-In-Cell Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC-MCC) method has been used to model the development and propagation of ionization waves in neon and argon positive columns. Low current conditions are considered, i.e. conditions where stepwise ionization or Coulomb collisions are negligible (linear ionization rate). This self-consistent model describes the development of self-excited moving striations, reproduces many of the well-known experimental characteristics (wavelength, spatial resonances, potential drop over one striation, electron "bunching" effect) of the ionization waves…
An argon-xenon (Ar/Xe) plasma is used as a model system for complex plasmas. Based on this system, symmetric low-pressure capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges are examined utilizing Particle-In-Cell/Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC/MCC) simulations. In addition to the simulation, an analytical energy balance model fed with the simulation data is applied to analyze the findings further. This work focuses on investigating the ion dynamics in a plasma with two ion species and a gas mixture as background. The reactivity of water vapor introduced in the flowing post-discharge of an RF atmospheric plasma torch is investigated through electrical characterization, optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry measurements. Due to the technical features of the plasma torch, the post-discharge can be considered as divided into two regions: an inner region (inside the plasma torch device) where the water vapor is injected and an outer region which directly interacts with the ambient air. The main reactions induced by the injection of water vapor are identified as well as those indicative of the …
Space and time resolved concentrations of Ar ($^{3}P_2$) metastable atoms at the exit of an atmospheric pressure radio-frequency micro-plasma jet were measured using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. The discharge features a coaxial geometry with a hollow capillary as an inner electrode and a ceramic tube with metal ring as outer electrode. Absorption profiles of metastable atoms as well as optical emission measurements reveal the dynamics and the filamentary structure of the discharge. The average spatial distribution of Ar metastables is characterized with and without a target in …
Using Monte Carlo Collisions (MCC) method, we have performed simulations of ion velocity distribution functions (IVDF) taking into account both elastic collisions and charge exchange collisions of ions with atoms in uniform electric fields for argon and helium background gases. The simulation results are verified by comparison with the experiment data of the ion drift velocities and the ion transverse diffusion coefficients in argon and helium. The recently published experimental data for the first seven coefficients of the Legendre polynomial expansion of the ion energy and angular distributi…
In this letter we propose a Turing model of the formation of patterns of visible light emission intensity in atmospheric pressure gas discharges. The electron density and the electron temperature take the roles of activator and inhibitor respectively in a two-reactant Turing model, with the activator diffusion coeffcient being much smaller than that of the inhibitor, and ionization and excitation from excited state atoms considered as the dominant reaction processes. The model predicts striations in a 1D system, which quantitatively agree with experimental results in terms of the spatial varia…
One-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is used to simulate the capacitively coupled argon plasma for a range of driving frequency from 13.56 MHz to 100 MHz. The argon chemistry set can, selectively, include two metastable levels enabling multi-step ionization and metastable pooling. The results show that the plasma density decreases when metastable atoms are included with higher discrepancy at higher excitation frequency. The contribution of multistep ionization to overall density increases with excitation frequency. The electron temperature increases with the inclusion of metastable atom…
Optical emission spectroscopy applied to non-equilibrium plasmas in molecular gases can give important information on basic plasma parameters, including the rotational, vibrational temperatures and densities of the investigated radiative states. In order to precisely understand the non-equilibrium of rotational-vibrational state distribution from investigated spectra without limiting presumptions, a state-by- state temperature-independent fitting procedure is the ideal approach. In this paper we present a novel software tool developed for this purpose, freely available for scientific community…

A combination of numerical simulation as well as diagnostic methods including current measurement and optical emission spectroscopy (OES) based on nitrogen emissions is used. The applied methods supplement each other and resolve problems, which arise when these methods are used individually. Nitrogen is used as …
Disruptions in tokamak plasmas may lead to the generation of runaway electrons that have the potential to damage plasma-facing components. Improved understanding of the runaway generation process requires interpretative modelling of experiments. In this work we simulate eight discharges in the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks, where argon gas was injected to trigger the disruption. We use a fluid modelling framework with the capability to model the generation of runaway electrons through the hot-tail, Dreicer and avalanche mechanisms, as well as runaway electron losses. Using experimentally base…
Axial emission profiles in a parallel plate dc micro discharge (feedgas: argon; discharge gap d=1mm; pressure p=10Torr) were studied by means of time resolved imaging with a fast ICCD camera. Additionally, volt-ampere (V-A) characteristics were recorded and Ar* metastable densities were measured by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). Axial emission profiles in the steady state regime are similar to corresponding profiles in standard size discharges (d=1cm, p=1Torr). For some discharge conditions relaxation oscillations are present when the micro discharge switches periodically…

Substantial developments in pattern recognition and machine learning offer unique advancements to study the deeper structures of plasma physics. We have employed the Kernel principal component analysis(KPCA) of Argon glow discharge plasmas over time-resolved UV-Vis spectra for different pressure scans. 3D vector fields obtained by KPCA reveal the chaotic structure, strange attractors. The presence of the cross magnetic field (B=100G) and the addition of pressure increase the degree of chaos. Lower scale vector fields show that phonon sinks and traps and cool the plasma electron temperatures. T…
A new combined PIC-MCC approach is developed for accurate and fast simulation of a radio frequency discharge at low gas pressure and high density of plasma. Test calculations of transition between different modes of electron heating in a ccrf discharge in helium and argon show a good agreement with experimental data. We demonstrate high efficiency of the combined PIC-MCC algorithm, especially for the collisionless regime of electron heating.
We present the results of the experimental study of the influence of dusty structures on plasma. We have studied glow discharges in neon and argon with $\text{Al}_2 \text{O}_3$ polydisperse particles and melamine-formaldehyde monodisperse particles with the diameter of $\text{4.83} \; μm$. We used optical emission spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence methods to measure shift of excited atoms populations, which led to similar results. In most cases, the population change was negligible as compared to the inaccuracy. $\text{Al}_2 \text{O}_3$ particles in argon formed large structures whic…
This brief communication reports a new method for generation of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet at the downstream end of a flexible plastic tube. The device consists of a small chamber where dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is ignited in Argon. The discharge is driven by a conventional low frequency AC power supply. The exit of DBD reactor is connected to a commercial flexible plastic tube (up to 4 meters long) with a thin floating Cu wire inside. Under certain conditions an Ar plasma jet can be extracted from the downstream tube end and there is no discharge inside the plastic tube. Th…
Massive material injection has been proposed as a way to mitigate the formation of a beam of relativistic runaway electrons that may result from a disruption in tokamak plasmas. In this paper we analyse runaway generation observed in eleven ASDEX Upgrade discharges where disruption was triggered using massive gas injection. We present numerical simulations in scenarios characteristic of on-axis plasma conditions, constrained by experimental observations, using a description of the runaway dynamics with self-consistent electric field and temperature evolution in two-dimensional momentum space a…
The axial light distributions in parallel-plate dc microdischarges in argon show similar behavior to large scale discharges. Between the low-current Townsend mode and the high current glow mode exists a large region of currents where different oscillations appear and the dynamic Volt-Ampere characteristic shows hysteresis behavior. During the oscillations the maximum peak intensity moves closer to the cathode, which is characteristic for the abnormal glow regime even though the average current is considerably smaller.
A coaxial microwave plasma setup was designed for investigation by optical and laser diagnostics. The plasma is sustained by two microwave power sources located at both ends of a coaxial line. This allows generating an axially homogeneous glow discharge at low pressure. For increasing pressures, this glow-like mode is found to be unstable and various self-organized patterns are observed including finger-like structures which can be sustained after the visible end of the plasma column.
Using dust grains as probes in gas discharge plasma is a very promising, but at the same time very challenging method, as the individual external control of dust grains has to be solved. We propose and demonstrate the applicability of the RotoDust experiment, where the well controlled centrifugal force is balanced by the horizontal confinement field in plane electrode argon radio frequency gas discharges. We have reached a resolution of 0.1 V/cm for the electric field. This technique is used to verify numerical simulations and to map symmetry properties of the confinement in dusty plasma exper…
A microwave discharge of atmospheric pressure, maintained by focused CW radiation of a 24-GHz gyrotron in an argon flow in an external air atmosphere, was investigated. The electron temperature was determined by the current-voltage curve of a dual Langmuir probe placed in a plasma torch. The electron temperature was also estimated from plasma emission spectra within the framework of a coronal plasma model. The obtained values of the electron temperature coincide within the measurement accuracy. Also, the electron temperature is many times higher than the gas temperature. This fact allows us to…

A hybrid model was developed to combine the kinetic description for electron motion and the fluid approach for negative and positive ions transport and plasmochemical processes. A significant change of plasma parameters related to injection of 5.8% portion of acetylene in argon was observed and analyzed. We found that the electronegativity of the mixture is about 30%. The densities of negatively and positively charged heavy h…
The available diagnostics for atmospheric micro-plasmas remain limited and relatively complex to implement; so we present a radio-frequency technique for diagnosing a key parameter here. The technique allows one to estimate the dependencies of the electron density by measuring the RF-impedance of the micro-plasma and analyzing it with an appropriate equivalent circuit. This technique is inexpensive, can be used in real time and gives reasonable results for argon and helium DC micro-plasmas in holes over a wide pressure range. The electron density increases linearly with current in the expected…
Parameters of a high frequency capacitive discharge in argon in axially symmetric chambers of different geometries are studied in experiments and by means of two-dimensional kinetic modeling by the Particle-in-Cell method. It is demonstrated that a change in the ratio of the areas of the driven and grounded electrodes can substantially increase the ion energy on the electrode practically without disturbing the plasma parameters. Particular attention is paid to studying the self-bias voltage and the ion distribution function on the electrode for gas pressures ranging from 15 to 70 mTorr. The re…
In this article, the stability of a complex plasma monolayer levitating in the sheath of the poweredelectrode of an asymmetric capacitively coupled radio-frequency argon discharge is studied. Com-pared to earlier studies, a better integration of the experimental results and theory is achieved byoperating with actual experimental control parameters such as the gas pressure and the dischargepower. It is shown that for a given microparticle monolayer at a fixed discharge power there existtwo threshold pressures: (i) above a specific pressure p cryst , the monolayer always crystallises; (ii)below …
To optimize the adhesion of layers presenting strong barrier properties on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) surfaces, we investigated the influence of argon and argon-oxygen atmospheric pressure post-discharges. This study was performed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and dynamic water contact angle (WCA) measurements. After the plasma treatment, a slight increase in the roughness was emphasized, more particularly for the samples treated in a post-discharge supplied in oxygen. Measurements of the surface roughness and of the o…
Microplasmas operated at atmospheric pressure show a number of peculiar dynamic phenomena. One of these phenomena is self-pulsing, which is characterized by intrinsic pulsing behavior of a DC driven plasma discharge. This work focuses on the numerical simulation of self-pulsing in a micro thin cathode discharge operated in atmospheric pressure argon. By means of a hybrid plasma model we show self-pulsing of the discharge in the expected MHz frequency range and described its actual origin.
Using a relaxation oscillator circuit, breakdown ($V_{\mathrm{BD}}$) and quench ($V_{\mathrm{Q}}$) voltages of a DC discharge microplasma between two needle probes are measured. High resolution modified Paschen curves are obtained for argon microplasmas including a quench voltage curve representing the voltage at which the plasma turns off. It is shown that, for a point to point microgap (e.g. the microgap between two needle probes) which describes many realistic microdevices, neither Paschen's law applies nor field emission is noticeable. Although normally $V_{\mathrm{BD}}>V_{\mathrm{Q}}$, it…
Particle-in-cell with Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) is a fully kinetic, particle based numerical simulation method with increasing popularity in the field of low temperature gas discharge physics. Already in its simplest form (electrostatic, one-dimensional geometry, and explicit time integration), it can properly describe a wide variety of complex, non-local, non-linear phenomena in electrical gas discharges at the microscopic level with high accuracy. However, being a numerical model working with discretized temporal and (partially) spatial coordinates, its stable and accurate operation l…

The experiment is conducted in a reflex plasma source, consisting of two cathodes and a ring anode. A penning type DC glow discharge in an uniform axial magnetic field is initiated in the background of argon gas. The current-voltage characteristics near the breakdown voltage show a hysteresis with two distinct discharge current regimes. The effect of magnetic field on the discharge current and floating potential oscillations is studied when the discharge …
The in-depth oxygen diffusion into a low density polyethylene film is performed in the post-discharge of an atmospheric plasma torch, supplied in argon as carrier gas and with or without oxygen as reactive gas. The chemical and structural properties of the polymer surface and bulk are studied in terms of plasma parameters (treatment time, power, and reactive gas flow rate). A good correlation between XPS and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses is demonstrated. The penetration depth of oxygen into the bulk of the polymer is investigated by angle resolved-XPS and time-of-flight SIMS…
Plasma kinetics of molecular hydrogen in the electrical discharge in Ar/CH3OH/H2O mixture is theoretically investigated for the first time. It is researched the dependence of [H2] on the breakdown field, the discharge power, solution compound and the argon pumping rate through the interelectrode gap. The highest hydrogen concentration is reached with the 20% methanol fraction in the solution. It is shown that [H2] grows as the linear function of the discharge power and decreases with the gas volume velocity increase.
This paper studies a continuous atmospheric-pressure discharge maintained by focused subterahertz radiation of a 263 GHz gyrotron. A plasma torch propagating towards microwave radiation was sustained on an argon flow exiting a metal gas tube in the surrounding atmosphere of air. Using a high-speed camera, the spatial structure of the torch was studied and the temporal dynamics on timescales of the order of 20 ns was examined. The emission spectra of the optical wavelength range were used to estimate the excitation temperature of argon atoms and electron density. It was shown that a discharge o…
The results of a detailed kinetic study of the main plasma chemical processes in non-equilibrium ethanol/argon plasma are presented. It is shown that at the beginning of the discharge the molecular hydrogen is mainly generated in the reaction of ethanol H-abstraction. Later hydrogen is formed from active H, CH2OH and CH3CHOH and formaldehyde. Comparison with experimental data has shown that the used kinetic mechanism predicts well the concentrations of main species at the reactor outlet.
Using particle-in-cell simulation technique, we investigate the plasma and ionization asymmetry, electron and ion energy distribution function in capacitive discharges excited by tailored waveforms. At a base frequency of 13.56 MHz, three different waveforms namely, sinusoidal, saw-tooth, and square are applied for a constant current density of 50 A/m2 and 5 mTorr argon gas pressure. The simulation results show that the square waveform produces the highest plasma density in the discharge, whereas maximum asymmetry is observed for plasma excited by sawtooth like waveform. Both square and sawtoo…
Very high frequency (VHF) driven capacitive discharges are now being increasingly adopted for plasma-based materials processing due to their high processing rates and lower substrate damage. Past studies related to complex plasma dynamics and higher harmonics generation in such systems were limited to constant voltage/current conditions, whereas, industrial systems are mostly driven by constant power density sources. In the present study, using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, we explore the dynamics of collisionless symmetric capacitive discharges that is operated at constant power densitie…
The formation of self-consistent dust crystal and its melting is a well known phenomenon in rf generated plasma but remains challenging in DC glow discharge plasma. The waves were triggered from two electrodes of the tube by simultaneous application of the same high voltage pulse and propagated toward the tube center until their collision. Space and time stability of the collisions was achieved via decreasing time delay of the initial breakdowns wh…
