We study the properties of a capacitive 13.56 MHz discharge properties with a mixture of Ar/C2H2 taking into account the plasmochemistry and growth of heavy hydrocarbons. A hybrid model was developed to combine the kinetic description for electron motion and the fluid approach for negative and positive ions transport and plasmochemical processes. A significant change of plasma parameters related to injection of 5.8% portion of acetylene in argon was observed and analyzed. We found that the electronegativity of the mixture is about 30%. The densities of negatively and positively charged heavy hydrocarbons are sufficiently large to be precursors for the formation of nanoparticles in the discharge volume.
The effects of the discharge voltage on the formation and nature of electric field transients in a symmetric, collisionless, very high frequency, capacitively coupled plasma are studied using a self-consistent particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code. At a driving frequency of 60 MHz and 5 mTorr of argon gas pressure, the discharge voltage is varied from 10V to 150 V for a fixed discharge gap. It is observed that an increase in the discharge voltage causes filamentation in the electric field transients and to create multiple higher harmonics in the bulk plasma. Correspondingly, higher harmonics,…
We investigate the energy and angular distributions of the ions reaching the electrodes in low-pressure, capacitively coupled oxygen radio-frequency discharges. These distributions, as well as the possibilities of the independent control of the ion flux and the ion energy are analysed for different types of excitation: single- and classical dual-frequency, as well as valleys- and sawtooth-type waveforms. The studies are based on kinetic, particle-based simulations that reveal the physics of these discharges in great details. The conditions cover weakly collisional to highly collisional domains…
The self-excitation of plasma series resonance (PSR) oscillations is a prominent feature in the current of low pressure capacitive radio frequency (RF) discharges. This resonance leads to high frequency oscillations of the charge in the sheaths and enhances electron heating. Up to now, the phenomenon has only been observed in asymmetric discharges. There, the nonlinearity in the voltage balance, which is necessary for the self-excitation of resonance oscillations with frequencies above the applied frequencies, is caused predominantly by the quadratic contribution to the charge-voltage relation…
Parameters of a high frequency capacitive discharge in argon in axially symmetric chambers of different geometries are studied in experiments and by means of two-dimensional kinetic modeling by the Particle-in-Cell method. It is demonstrated that a change in the ratio of the areas of the driven and grounded electrodes can substantially increase the ion energy on the electrode practically without disturbing the plasma parameters. Particular attention is paid to studying the self-bias voltage and the ion distribution function on the electrode for gas pressures ranging from 15 to 70 mTorr. The re…

We use the one-dimensional object-oriented particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision code oopd1 to explore the charged particle densities, the electronegativity, the electron energy probability function (EEPF), and the electron heating mechanism in a single frequency capacitively coupled oxygen discharge when the applied voltage amplitude is varied. We explore discharges operated at 10 mTorr, where electron heating within the plasma bulk (the electronegative core) dominates, and at 50 mTorr where sheath heating dominates. At 10 mTorr the discharge is operated in combined drift-ambipolar (DA) and …
Very high frequency (VHF) driven capacitive discharges are now being increasingly adopted for plasma-based materials processing due to their high processing rates and lower substrate damage. Past studies related to complex plasma dynamics and higher harmonics generation in such systems were limited to constant voltage/current conditions, whereas, industrial systems are mostly driven by constant power density sources. In the present study, using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, we explore the dynamics of collisionless symmetric capacitive discharges that is operated at constant power densitie…
In this work, we present the results of simulations carried out for N2-H2 capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges, running at low pressure (0.3-0.9 mbar), low power (5-20 W), and for amounts of H2 up to 5 pct. Simulations are performed using a hybrid code that couples a two-dimensional time-dependent fluid module, describing the dynamics of the charged particles in the discharge, to a zero-dimensional kinetic module, that solves the Boltzmann equation and describes the production and destruction of neutral species. The model accounts for the production of several vibrationally and elec…
We report the existence of an enhanced operating regime for a high-frequency, low-pressure capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) discharge in the presence of a weak magnetic field applied parallel to the electrodes. Our PIC-MCC simulations show that the plasma density and ion flux values exhibit a sharp peak when the electron cyclotron frequency equals half of the applied RF frequency. The physical mechanism responsible for this behaviour is traced to a synchronization between the oscillatory motion of the electrode sheath edge and the motion of a set of electrons reflected by this sheath. These e…
Using particle-in-cell simulation technique, we investigate the plasma and ionization asymmetry, electron and ion energy distribution function in capacitive discharges excited by tailored waveforms. At a base frequency of 13.56 MHz, three different waveforms namely, sinusoidal, saw-tooth, and square are applied for a constant current density of 50 A/m2 and 5 mTorr argon gas pressure. The simulation results show that the square waveform produces the highest plasma density in the discharge, whereas maximum asymmetry is observed for plasma excited by sawtooth like waveform. Both square and sawtoo…
External matching networks are crucial and necessary for operating capacitively coupled plasmas in order to maximize the absorbed power. Experiments show that external circuits in general heavily interact with the plasma in a nonlinear way. This interaction has to be taken into account in order to be able to design suitable networks, e.g., for plasma processing systems. For a complete understanding of the underlying physics of this coupling, a nonlinear simulation approach which considers both the plasma and the circuit dynamics can provide useful insights. In this work, the coupling of an equ…
A self-consistent particle-in-cell simulation study is performed to investigate the effect of driving frequency on the electric field non-linearity, electron heating mechanism and electron energy distribution function (EEDF) in a low pressure symmetric capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) discharge at a constant electron plasma frequency. The driving frequency is varied from 27.12 MHz to 100 MHz for a discharge gap of 3.2 cm in argon at a gas pressure of 1 Pa. The simulation results provide insight of higher harmonic generations in a CCP system for a constant electron response time. The spatio-te…
Benchmarking is generally accepted as an important element in demonstrating the correctness of computer simulations. In the modern sense, a benchmark is a computer simulation result that has evidence of correctness, is accompanied by estimates of relevant errors, and which can thus be used as a basis for judging the accuracy and efficiency of other codes. In this paper, we present four benchmark cases related to capacitively coupled discharges. These benchmarks prescribe all relevant physical and numerical parameters. We have simulated the benchmark conditions using five independently develope…
The dynamical characteristics of a single frequency low pressure capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) device under varying applied RF voltages and driving frequencies are studied using particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations. An operational regime is identified where for a given voltage the plasma density is found to remain constant over a range of driving frequencies and to then increase rapidly as a function of the driving frequency. The threshold frequency for this mode transition as well as the value of the constant density is found to increase with an increase in the applied volta…

The paper provides a tutorial to the conceptual layout of a self-consistently coupled Particle-In-Cell/Test-Particle model for the kinetic simulation of sputtering transport in capacitively coupled plasmas at low gas pressures. It explains when a kinetic approach is actually needed and which numerical concepts allow for the inherent nonequilibrium behavior of the charged and neutral particles. At the example of a generic sputtering discharge both the fundamentals of the applied Monte Carlo methods as well as the conceptual details in the context of the sputtering scenario are elaborated on. In this article, the stability of a complex plasma monolayer levitating in the sheath of the poweredelectrode of an asymmetric capacitively coupled radio-frequency argon discharge is studied. Com-pared to earlier studies, a better integration of the experimental results and theory is achieved byoperating with actual experimental control parameters such as the gas pressure and the dischargepower. It is shown that for a given microparticle monolayer at a fixed discharge power there existtwo threshold pressures: (i) above a specific pressure p cryst , the monolayer always crystallises; (ii)below …
Recently, S Patil et al. have reported the existence of an enhanced operating regime when a low-pressure (5 mTorr) capacitively coupled discharge (CCP) is driven by a very high radio-frequency (60 MHz) source in the presence of a weak external magnetic field applied parallel to its electrodes. Their Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations show, that a significantly higher bulk plasma density and ion flux can be achieved at the electrode when the electron cyclotron frequency equals half of the applied RF frequency for a given fixed voltage. In the present work we take a detailed look at this phenome…
A particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation study is performed to investigate the discharge asymmetry, higher harmonic generations and electron heating mechanism in a low pressure very high frequency capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) excited by a saw-tooth like current waveform. Two current densities, 50 A/m2 and 100 A/m2 are chosen for a constant gas pressure of 5 mTorr in argon plasma. The driving frequency is varied from 13.56 MHz to 54.24 MHz. At a lower driving frequency, high frequency modulations on the instantaneous sheath edge position at the grounded electrode are observed. These high freque…

This paper reports experiments on self$-$excited dust acoustic waves (DAWs) and its propagation characteristics in a magnetized rf discharge plasma. The DAWs are spontaneously excited in dusty plasma after adding more particles in the confining potential well and found to propagate in the direction of streaming ions. The spontaneous excitation of such low-frequency modes is possible due to the instabilities associated with streaming ions through the dust grain medium. The background E-field and neutral pressure determine the stability of excited DAWs. The characteristics of DAWs strongly depen…
We use the one-dimensional object-oriented particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision code oopd1 to explore the properties and the origins of both the electric field and electron power absorption within the plasma bulk for a capacitively coupled oxygen discharge operated at 10 and 100 mTorr for 45 mm of gap distance. The properties of the electric field at three different time slices as well as time averaged have been explored considering the moments of the Boltzmann equation. The electron power absorption is distinctly different at these operating pressures. The most relevant contributions to the…
The mixing of N2 with H2 leads to very different plasmas from pure N2 and H2 plasma discharges. Numerous issues are therefore raised involving the processes leading to ammonia (NH3) formation. The aim of this work is to better characterize capacitively-coupled radiofrequency plasma discharges in N2 with few percents of H2 (up to 5 pct), at low pressure (0.3 to 1 mbar) and low coupled power (3 to 13 W). Both experimental measurements and numerical simulations are performed. For clarity, we separated the results in two complementary parts. The actual one (first part), presents the details on the…
Phase Resolved Optical Emission Spectroscopy (PROES) measurements combined with 1d3v Particle-in-Cell/Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC/MCC) simulations are used to study the electron power absorption and excitation/ionization dynamics in capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs) in mixtures of neon and oxygen gases. The study is performed for a geometrically symmetric CCP reactor with a gap length of 2.5 cm at a driving frequency of 10~MHz and a peak-to-peak voltage of 350 V. The pressure of the gas mixture is varied between 15 Pa and 500 Pa, while the neon/oxygen concentration is tuned between 10% and 9…
Electron heating and ionization dynamics in capacitively coupled radio frequency (RF) atmospheric pressure microplasmas operated in helium are investigated by Particle in Cell simulations and semi-analytical modeling. A strong heating of electrons and ionization in the plasma bulk due to high bulk electric fields are observed at distinct times within the RF period. Based on the model the electric field is identified to be a drift field caused by a low electrical conductivity due to the high electron-neutral collision frequency at atmospheric pressure. Thus, the ionization is mainly caused by o…
The effect of changing the driving frequency on the plasma density and the electron dynamics in a capacitive radio-frequency argon plasma operated at low pressures of a few Pa is investigated by Particle in Cell/Monte Carlo Collisions simulations and analytical modeling. In contrast to previous assumptions the plasma density does not follow a quadratic dependence on the driving frequency in this non-local collisionless regime. Instead, a step-like increase at a distinct driving frequency is observed. Based on the analytical power balance model, in combination with a detailed analysis of the el…
In this contribution, nanosecond pulsed discharges in N$_{2}$ and N$_{2}$/0.9% H$_{2}$O at atmospheric pressure (at 300 K) are studied with time-resolved imaging, optical emission spectroscopy and Rayleigh scattering. A 170 ns high voltage pulse is applied across two pin-shaped electrodes at a frequency of 1 kHz. The discharge consists of three phases: an ignition phase, a spark phase and a recombination phase. During the ignition phase the emission is mainly caused by molecular nitrogen (N$_{2}$(C-B)). In the spark and recombination phase mainly atomic nitrogen emission is observed. The emiss…
We present an one-dimensional particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo model for capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges in oxygen. The model quantitatively describes the central part of the discharge. For a given voltage and pressure, it self-consistently determines the electric potential and the distribution functions for electrons, negatively charged atomic oxygen, and positively charged molecular oxygen. Previously used collision cross sections are critically assessed and in some cases modified. Provided associative detachment due to metastable oxygen molecules is included in the model, the el…
The complex theoretical and experimental investigation of plasma kinetics of the electric discharge in the mixture of air and ethanol-water vapors is carried out. The discharge was burning in the cavity, formed by air jets pumping between electrodes, placed in aqueous ethanol solution. It is found out that the hydrogen yield from the discharge is maximal in the case when ethanol and water in the solution are in equal amounts. It is shown that the hydrogen production increases with the discharge power and reaches the saturation at high value. The concentrations of the main stable gas-phase comp…
In this series of three papers we present results from a combined experimental and theoretical effort to quantitatively describe capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges in oxygen. The particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo model on which the theoretical description is based will be described in the present paper. It treats space charge fields and transport processes on an equal footing with the most important plasma-chemical reactions. For given external voltage and pressure, the model determines the electric potential within the discharge and the distribution functions for electrons, negatively…
We use the one-dimensional object-oriented particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision code {\tt oopd1} to explore the spatio-temporal evolution of the electron heating mechanism in a capacitively coupled oxygen discharge in the pressure range 10 -- 200 mTorr. The electron heating is most significant in the sheath vicinity during the sheath expansion phase. We explore how including and excluding detachment by the singlet metastable states O$_2$(a$^1 Δ_{\rm g}$) and O$_2$(b$^1Σ_{\rm g}^+$) influences the heating mechanism, the effective electron temperature and electronegativity, in the oxygen disch…
A thorough understanding of the energy transfer mechanism from the electric field to electrons is of utmost importance for optimization and control of different plasma sources and processes. This mechanism, called electron power absorption, involves complex electron dynamics in electronegative capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs) at low pressures, that are still not fully understood. Therefore, we present a spatio-temporally resolved analysis of electron power absorption in low pressure oxygen CCPs based on the momentum balance equation derived from the Boltzmann equation. Data are obtained fro…
Particle-in-cell with Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) is a fully kinetic, particle based numerical simulation method with increasing popularity in the field of low temperature gas discharge physics. Already in its simplest form (electrostatic, one-dimensional geometry, and explicit time integration), it can properly describe a wide variety of complex, non-local, non-linear phenomena in electrical gas discharges at the microscopic level with high accuracy. However, being a numerical model working with discretized temporal and (partially) spatial coordinates, its stable and accurate operation l…
The effects of nanosecond pulsed non-equilibrium plasma discharges on ignition characteristics and low-temperature chemistry or LTC of DME/O2/Ar mixtures are numerically investigated in a plane-to-plane geometry at a reduced pressure of 76 Torr. Detailed numerical investigations of the two-stage ignition process in different temperature regimes of DME have been created through a high-fidelity one-dimensional, multi-timescale plasma-discharge model. Two different initial temperatures are set for comparison: 550K, the negative temperature coefficient regime, where LTC plays a dominate role; 800K…
Plasma kinetics of molecular hydrogen in the electrical discharge in Ar/CH3OH/H2O mixture is theoretically investigated for the first time. It is researched the dependence of [H2] on the breakdown field, the discharge power, solution compound and the argon pumping rate through the interelectrode gap. The highest hydrogen concentration is reached with the 20% methanol fraction in the solution. It is shown that [H2] grows as the linear function of the discharge power and decreases with the gas volume velocity increase.
Electron dynamics in planar radio frequency magnetron plasmas: III. Comparison of experimental investigations of power absorption dynamics to simulation results
This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental study of plasma-assisted reforming of ethanol into molecular hydrogen in a new modification of the "tornado" type electrical discharge. Numerical modeling clarifies the nature of the non-thermal conversion and explains the kinetic mechanism of nonequilibrium plasma-chemical transformations in the gas-liquid system and the evolution of hydrogen during the reforming as a function of discharge parameters and ethanol-to-water ratio in the mixture. We also propose a scheme of chemical reactions for plasma kinetics description. It is …
An influence of a high-voltage (3-17 kV) 20 ns pulse on a weakly-ionized low-pressure (0.1-10 Pa) capacitively-coupled radiofrequency (RF) argon plasma is studied experimentally. The plasma evolution after pulse exhibits two characteristic regimes: a bright flash, occurring within 100 ns after the pulse (when the discharge emission increases by 2-3 orders of magnitude over the steady-state level), and a dark phase, lasting a few hundreds μs (when the intensity of the discharge emission drops significantly below the steady-state level). The electron density increases during the flash and remain…
Experimental results on an auto-oscillatory pattern observed in a complex plasma are presented. The experiments are performed with an argon plasma which is produced under microgravity conditions using a capacitively-coupled rf discharge at low power and gas pressure. The observed intense wave activity in the complex plasma cloud correlates well with the low-frequency modulation of the discharge voltage and current and is initiated by periodic void contractions. Particle migrations forced by the waves are of long-range repulsive and attractive character.
The specific form of one electrode capacitive discharge was studied in long tubes filled with high purity neon or argon at pressure 1-4 Torr. The main feature of the discharge is the low rate (less than 10 kHz) of the voltage pulses of given polarity which are applied to only one electrode of the tube, while another one remains free or missing. This type of the discharge was named one-electrode discharge (OED), and seems not to be described in previous studies. The discharge is observed as a glowing plasma column which occupies either entire tube or its part dependent on actual voltage amplitu…
A shape of the signals in proportional chamber with preamplification gap and electron component extraction from proportional discharge has been investigated. It was shown for Penning mixtures that in proportional discharge besides the primary avalanches there is also the tail of secondary avalanches caused by metastable and nonmetastable Penning effects. For different mixtures of gases the duration of the signals caused by secondary avalanches are equal to ~ n*10 microseconds (n = 1 - 10), the total charge of secondary avalanches is comparable or larger than in primary avalanches.
A 13.56 MHz RF discharge in hydrogen was studied within the pressure range of 1-17 10 Pa, and at power range of 400-1000 W. The electron energy distribution function and 18 electron density were measured by a Langmuir probe. The gas temperature was determined by 19 the Fulcher-$α$ system in pure H2, and by the second positive system of nitrogen using N2 as the 20 probing gas. The gas temperature was constant and equal to 450 $\pm$ 50 K in the Capacitively 21 Coupled Plasma mode (CCP), and it was increasing with pressure and power in the Inductively 22 Coupled Plasma mode (ICP). Also the vibrat…
