Experimental results on an auto-oscillatory pattern observed in a complex plasma are presented. The experiments are performed with an argon plasma which is produced under microgravity conditions using a capacitively-coupled rf discharge at low power and gas pressure. The observed intense wave activity in the complex plasma cloud correlates well with the low-frequency modulation of the discharge voltage and current and is initiated by periodic void contractions. Particle migrations forced by the waves are of long-range repulsive and attractive character.
Conventional snowplow/1-D models assume the existence of single completely ionized plasma sheet in the discharge chamber of pulsed plasma thrusters (PPTs). However, extensive experimental analysis and observations suggest the presence of multiple plasma streams and partial ionization of the propellant gas. A multi-layered plasma-neutral mass sheet one-dimensional numerical model is developed for PPTs in the present paper. The model accounts for the secondary plasma sheets generated due to the crowbar breakdowns as well as the neutral gas generated after the main discharge. The model accurately…
Complex plasmas consist of microparticles embedded in a low-temperature plasma and allow investigating various effects by tracing the motion of these microparticles. Dust density waves appear in complex plasmas as self-excited acoustic waves in the microparticle fluid at low neutral gas pressures. Here we show that various properties of these waves depend on the position of the microparticle cloud with respect to the plasma sheath and explain this finding in terms of the underlying ion-drift instability. These results may be helpful in better understanding the propagation of dust density waves…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is an essential feature of modern science. We demonstrate that it also plays an important role in the physics of complex plasmas. Complex plasmas can serve as a powerful tool for observing and studying discrete types of symmetry and disordering at the kinetic level that numerous many-body systems exhibit.
Two new forms of strongly coupled plasmas will be discussed. They have become possible to create and observe in the laboratory only recently and exhibit a wealth of intriguing complex behavior which can be studied, in many cases for the first time, experimentally. Plasmas, gases of charged particles, are universal in the sense that certain properties of complex behavior do only depend on ratios of characteristic parameters of the plasma, not on the parameters themselves. Therefore, it is of fundamental and far reaching consequence, to be able to create and observe a strongly coupled plasma sin…
The formation and evolution of nonlinear and turbulent dynamical structures in two-dimensional complex plasmas and fluids is explored by means of generalised (drift) fluid simulations. Recent numerical results on turbulence in dusty magnetised plasmas, strongly coupled fluids, semi-classical ("quantum") plasmas and in rotating quantum fluids are reviewed and discussed.
Employing an attenuated oscillation method, the anisotropic interaction force between two vertically aligned dust particles located in the sheath of a complex plasma was measured experimentally based on a linear approximation to the interaction force. Experimental data shows that although both particles experience a repulsive interaction force, the upper particle experiences a stronger magnitude force than does the lower. This result can be explained by the ion wakefield since the lower particle resides within the ion wakefield generated by the streaming ions passing through the sheath and aro…
Complex plasmas are low-temperature plasmas that contain micrometer-size particles in addition to the neutral gas particles and the ions and electrons that make up the plasma. The microparticles interact strongly and display a wealth of collective effects. Here we report on linked numerical simulations that reproduce many of the experimental results of complex plasmas. We model a capacitively coupled plasma with a fluid code written for the commercial package comsol. The output of this model is used to calculate forces on microparticles. The microparticles are modeled using the molecular dynam…
Complex (dusty) plasmas allow experimental studies of various physical processes occurring in classical liquids and solids by directly observing individual microparticles. A major problem is that the interaction between microparticles is generally not molecular-like. In this Letter, we propose how to achieve a molecular-like interaction potential in laboratory 2D complex plasmas. We argue that this principal aim can be achieved by using relatively small microparticles and properly adjusting discharge parameters. If experimentally confirmed, this will make it possible to employ complex plasmas …
Thermophoresis is a tool often applied in complex plasma experiments. One of the usual stated benefits over other experimental tools is that changes induced by thermophoresis neither directly depend on, nor directly influence, the plasma parameters. From electronic data, plasma emission profiles in the sheath, and Langmuir probe data in the plasma bulk, we conclude that this assumption does not hold. An important effect on the levitation of dust particles in argon plasma is observed as well. The reason behind the changes in plasma parameters seems to be the change in neutral atom density accom…
Newton-Raphson method in complex space is used to numerically solve the transcendental dispersion relation of low frequency shear Alfven waves in fusion plasmas. The equation exhibits several physically relevant basins of attraction. The method is shown to be efficient and fast in solving this equation, with very small portion of non-converging points.
Structure of Mach cones in a crystalline complex plasma has been studied experimentally using an intensity sensitive imaging, which resolved particle motion in three dimensions. This revealed a previously unknown out-of-plane cone structure, which appeared due to excitation of the vertical wave mode. The complex plasma consisted of micron sized particles forming a monolayer in a plasma sheath of a gas discharge. Fast particles, spontaneously moving under the monolayer, created Mach cones with multiple structures. The in-plane cone structure was due to compressional and shear lattice waves.
The dielectric properties of complex plasma containing either metal or dielectric spherical inclusions (macroparticles, dust) are investigated. We focus on surface plasmon resonances on the macroparticle surfaces and their effect on electromagnetic wave propagation. It is demonstrated that the presence of surface plasmon oscillations significantly modifies plasma electromagnetic properties by resonances and cutoffs in the effective permittivity. This leads to related branches of electromagnetic waves and to the wave band gaps. The results are discussed in the context of dusty plasma experiment…
Heat transport in a three-dimensional complex (dusty) plasma was experimentally studied in microgravity conditions using Plasmakristall-4 (PK-4) instrument on board the International Space Station (ISS). An extended suspension of microparticles was locally heated by a shear flow created by applying the radiation pressure force of the manipulation-laser beam. Individual particle trajectories in the flow were analysed and from these, using a fluid heat transport equation that takes viscous heating and neutral gas drag into account, the complex plasma's thermal diffusivity and kinematic viscosity…
We propose and demonstrate a concept that mimics the magnetization of the heavy dust particles in a complex plasma while leaving the properties of the light species practically unaffected. It makes use of the frictional coupling between a complex plasma and the neutral gas, which allows to transfer angular momentum from a rotating gas column to a well-controlled rotation of the dust cloud. This induces a Coriolis force that acts exactly as the Lorentz force in a magnetic field. Experimental normal mode measurements for a small dust cluster with four particles show excellent agreement with theo…
Expressions for the ion and electron thermal forces acting on a charged grain, suspended in a weakly ionized plasma subject to temperature gradients, are derived. The main emphasize is on the conditions pertinent to the investigations of complex (dusty) plasmas in gas discharges. Estimates show that for the electron temperature gradients $\sim {\mathcal O}$(eV/cm) typically encountered in laboratory gas discharges, the electron thermal force can become an important player among other forces acting on micron-size grains.
Vibrational modes and instabilities of a dust particle pair in a terrestrial laboratory complex plasma are investigated employing an analytical method whereby the plasma wakefield induced by an external electric field is modeled using an image charge method. It is found that for both horizontally and vertically aligned dust particle pairs in equilibrium, four normal modes exist. Variations of the confinement parameters cause a single type of instability in the horizontal pair and two types of instabilities in the vertical pair.
Shear flow in a three-dimensional complex plasma was experimentally studied in microgravity conditions using Plasmakristall-4 (PK-4) instrument on board the International Space Station (ISS). The shear flow was created in an extended suspension of microparticles by applying the radiation pressure force of the manipulation-laser beam. Individual particle trajectories in the flow were analyzed and from these, using the Navier-Stokes equation, an upper estimate of the complex plasma's kinematic viscosity was calculated in the range of $0.2$--$6.7~{\rm mm^2/s}$. This estimate is much lower than pr…
A new type of nonlinear dust pulse structures has been observed in afterglow complex plasma under microgravity condition on board the International Space Station (ISS). The dust pulses are triggered spontaneously as the plasma is switched off and the particles start to flow through each other (uni-directional or counter-streaming) in the presence of a low-frequency external electric excitation. The pulses are oblique with respect to the microparticle cloud and appear to be symmetric with respect to the central axis. A possible explanation of this observation with the spontaneous development of…
Micron sized particles are suspended or even lifted up in a gas by thermophoresis. This allows the study of many processes occurring in strongly coupled complex plasmas at the kinetic level in a relatively stress-free environment. First results are presented. The technique is also of interest for technological applications.
A new type of quasi-two-dimensional complex plasma system was observed which consisted of monodisperse microspheres and their binary agglomerations (dimers). The particles and their dimers levitated in a plasma sheath at slightly different heights and formed two distinct sublayers. The sys- tem did not crystallize and may be characterized as disordered solid. The dimers were identified based on their characteristic appearance in defocused images, i.e., rotating interference fringe pat- terns. The in-plane and inter-plane particle separations exhibit nonmonotonic dependence on the discharge pre…
A versatile table-top dusty plasma experimental (DPEx) device to study flow induced excitations of linear and nonlinear waves/structures in a complex plasma is presented. In this {$Π$}-shaped apparatus a DC glow discharge plasma is produced between a disc shaped anode and a grounded long cathode {tray} by applying a high voltage DC in the background of a neutral gas {(Argon)} and subsequently a dusty plasma is created by introducing micron sized dust particles that get charged and levitated in the sheath region. A flow of the dust particles is induced in a controlled manner by adjusting the pu…
A complex (dusty) plasma system is well known as a paradigmatic model for studying the kinetics of solid-liquid phase transitions in inactive condensed matter. At the same time, under certain conditions a complex plasma system can also display characteristics of an active medium with the micron-sized particles converting energy of the ambient environment into motility and thereby becoming active. We present a detailed analysis of the experimental complex plasmas system that shows evidence of a non-equilibrium stationary coexistence between a cold crystalline and a hot fluid state in the struct…
The theoretical description of complex (dusty) plasmas requires multiscale concepts that adequately incorporate the correlated interplay of streaming electrons and ions, neutrals, and dust grains. Knowing the effective dust-dust interaction, the multiscale problem can be effectively reduced to a one-component plasma model of the dust subsystem. The goal of the present publication is a systematic evaluation of the electrostatic potential distribution around a dust grain in the presence of a streaming plasma environment by means of two complementary approaches: (i) a high precision computation o…
We study the onset and characteristics of vortices in complex (dusty) plasmas using two-dimensional simulations in a setup modeled after the PK-3 Plus laboratory. A small number of microparticles initially self-arranges in a monolayer around the void. As additional particles are introduced, an extended system of vortices develops due to a non-zero curl of the plasma forces. We demonstrate a shear-thinning effect in the vortices. Velocity structure functions and the energy and enstrophy spectra show that vortex flow turbulence is present that is in essence of the "classical" Kolmogorov type.
An example of the non-equilibrium phase transition is the formation of lanes when one kind of particles is driven against the other. According to experimental observation, lane formation in binary complex plasmas occurs when the smaller particles are driven through the stationary dust cloud of the larger particles. We calculate the driving force acting on a probe particle that finds itself in a quiescent cloud of particles in complex plasma of the low-pressure radio frequency discharge under microgravity conditions. It is shown that the nonzero driving force is a result of the dependence of th…
An interaction of upstream extra particles with a monolayer highly-ordered complex plasma is studied. A principally new abnormal turbulent wake formed behind the supersonic upstream particle is discovered. An anomalous type of the turbulence wake clearly manifests in anomalously low thermal diffusivity and two orders of magnitude larger particle kinetic temperature compared to that of the 'normal' wake (Mach cone) observed by Du et al [Europhys. Lett. 99, 55001 (2012)].
We report the first observation of the Mach cones excited by a larger microparticle (projectile) moving through a cloud of smaller microparticles (dust) in a complex plasma with neon as a buffer gas under microgravity conditions. A collective motion of the dust particles occurs as propagation of the contact discontinuity. The corresponding speed of sound was measured by a special method of the Mach cone visualization. The measurement results are incompatible with the theory of ion acoustic waves. The estimate for the pressure in a strongly coupled Coulomb system and a scaling law for the compl…
In this letter, we present the first numerical study on the structural and dynamical properties of a quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) binary complex plasma with Langevin dynamics simulation. The effect of interaction with non-reciprocity on the structure is investigated by comparing systems with pure Yukawa and with point-wake Yukawa interactions. The long-time alpha-relaxation for the latter system is revealed by plotting and analyzing the intermediate scattering function. The results clearly indicate that a q2D binary complex plasma is a suitable model system to study the dynamics of a glass form…
Binary complex plasmas consist of microparticles of two different species and can form two-dimensional square lattices under certain conditions. The dispersion relations of the square lattice waves are derived for the longitudinal and transverse in-plane modes, assuming that the out-of-plane mode is suppressed by the strong vertical confinement. The results are compared with the spectra obtained in Langevin dynamics simulations. Furthermore, we investigate the dependence of the dispersion relation on the charge ratio and mass ratio of the two particle species.
A hypothesis on the physical mechanism generating the heartbeat instability in complex (dusty) plasmas is presented. It is suggested that the instability occurs due to the periodically repeated critical transformation on the boundary between the microparticle-free area (void) and the complex plasma. The critical transformation is supposed to be analogous to the formation of the sheath in the vicinity of an electrode. The origin of the transformation is the loss of the electrons and ions on microparticles surrounding the void. We have shown that this hypothesis is consistent with the experiment…
The influence of a supersonic projectile on a three-dimensional complex plasma is studied. Micron sized particles in a low-temperature plasma formed a large undisturbed system in the new 'Zyflex' chamber during microgravity conditions. A supersonic probe particle excited a Mach cone with Mach number M $\approx$ 1.5 - 2 and double Mach cone structure in the large weakly damped particle cloud. The speed of sound is measured with different methods and particle charge estimations are compared to calculations from standard theories. The high image resolution enables the study of Mach cones in micro…
Over the past decade, dust particulate contamination has increasingly become an area of concern within the fusion research community. In a burning plasma machine design like the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), dust contamination presents problems for diagnostic integration and may contribute to tritium safety issues. Additionally due to ITER design, such dust contamination problems are projected to become of even greater concern due to dust/wall interactions and possible instabilities created within the plasma by such particulates. Since the dynamics of such dust can i…
Dust acoustic waves in the bulk of a dust cloud in complex plasma of low-pressure gas discharge under microgravity conditions are considered. The complex plasma is assumed to conform to the ionization equation of state (IEOS) developed in our previous study. This equation implies the ionization similarity of plasmas. We find singular points of IEOS that determine the behavior of the sound velocity in different regions of the cloud. The fluid approach is utilized to deduce the wave equation that includes the neutral drag term. It is shown that the sound velocity is fully defined by the particle…
A phenomenological model using fluid theory is developed to show that the decay of two seemingly independent nonlinear structures namely the dust void and dust soliton strongly depends on the plasma ionization parameter in an unmagnetized complex plasma system. Numerical solution of model equations has shown that the evolution of dust voids and their subsequent decay in a time frame is intimately related with the ionization parameter. A similar result also holds good in case of dust solitons where stability of soliton is found to depend critically upon ionization parameter. Most importantly, i…
Active Janus particles suspended in a plasma were studied experimentally. The Janus particles were micron-size plastic microspheres, one half of which was coated with a thin layer of platinum. They were suspended in the plasma sheath of a radio-frequency discharge in argon at low pressure. The Janus particles moved in characteristic looped trajectories suggesting a combination of spinning and circling motion; their interactions led to the emergence of rich dynamics characterized by non-Maxwellian velocity distribution. The particle propulsion mechanism is discussed, the main force driving the …
We study a complex plasma under microgravity conditions that is first stabilized with an oscillating electric field. Once the stabilization is stopped, the so-called heartbeat instability develops. We study how the kinetic energy spectrum changes during and after the onset of the instability and compare with the double cascade predicted by Kraichnan and Leith for two-dimensional turbulence. The onset of the instability manifests clearly in the ratio of the reduced rates of cascade of energy and enstrophy and in the power-law exponents of the energy spectra.
In complex plasmas, the behavior of freely floating micrometer sized particles is studied. The particles can be directly visualized and recorded by digital video cameras. To analyze the dynamics of single particles, reliable algorithms are required to accurately determine their positions to sub-pixel accuracy from the recorded images. Typically, straightforward algorithms are used for this task. Here, we combine the algorithms with common techniques for image processing. We study several algorithms and pre- and post-processing methods, and we investigate the impact of the choice of threshold p…
In the last experiment with the PK-3 Plus laboratory onboard the International Space Station, interactions of millimeter-size metallic spheres with a complex plasma were studied~[M. Schwabe {\it et al.}, New J. Phys. {\bf 19}, 103019 (2017)]. Among the phenomena observed was the formation of cavities (regions free of microparticles forming a complex plasma) surrounding the spheres. The size of the cavity is governed by the balance of forces experienced by the microparticles at the cavity edge. In this article we develop a detailed theoretical model describing the cavity size and demonstrate th…
We investigate the propagation characteristics of two counter propagating dust acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) undergoing a head-on collision, in the presence of strong coupling between micron sized charged dust particles in a complex plasma. A coupled set of nonlinear dynamical equations describing the evolution of the two DASWs using the extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo perturbation technique is derived. The nature and extent of post collision phase-shifts of these solitary waves are studied over a wide range of dusty plasma parameters in a strongly and a weakly coupled medium. We find a sign…
The plasma is generated in a low frequency glow discharge within an elongated glass tube oriented vertically. The dust particles added to the plasma are confined above the heater and form counter-rotating clouds close to the tube centre. The shape of the clouds and the velocity field of the conveying dust particles are determined. The forces acting on the particles are calculated. It is shown that convection of the dust is affected by the convective gas motion which is triggered, in turn, by thermal creep of the gas along the inhomogeneously heated walls of the tube.
Density waves were studied in a phase-separated binary complex plasma under microgravity conditions. For the big particles, waves were self-excited by the two-stream instability, while for small particles, they were excited by heartbeat instability with the presence of reversed propagating pulses of a different frequency. By studying the dynamics of wave crests at the interface, we recognize a "collision zone" and a "merger zone" before and after the interface, respectively. The results provide a generic picture of wave-wave interaction at the interface between two "mediums".
Implications of recently discovered effect of channeling of upstream extra particles for transport phenomena in a two-dimensional plasma crystal are discussed. Upstream particles levitated above the lattice layer and tended to move between the rows of lattice particles. An example of heat transport is considered, where upstream particles act as moving heat sources, which may lead to anomalous heat transport. The average channeling length observed was 15 - 20 interparticle distances. New features of the channeling process are also reported.
We investigate the low-frequency wave mode associated with heavy particles and its instability in a collisional complex plasma with drifting ions. The effect of the ion drift on the sound velocity of this mode is discussed. The general condition of the instability is derived for subthermal ion drifts, taking into account strong coupling of the particle component. As a general tendency, strong coupling effects reduce the sound velocity and facilitate the occurrence of the ion drift instability. A wide parameter range is considered from the weakly collisional to strongly collisional regimes for …
An interesting aspect in the research of complex (dusty) plasmas is the experimental study of the interaction of micro-particles with the surrounding plasma for diagnostic purposes. Local electric fields can be determined from the behaviour of particles in the plasma, e.g. particles may serve as electrostatic probes. Since in many cases of applications in plasma technology it is of great interest to describe the electric field conditions in front of floating or biased surfaces, the confinement and behaviour of test particles is studied in front of floating walls inserted into a plasma as well …
Feedback stabilization of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes is studied in a cylindrical model for a tokamak with resistivity, viscosity and toroidal rotation. The control is based on a linear combination of the normal and tangential components of the magnetic field just inside the resistive wall. The feedback includes complex gain, for both the normal and for the tangential components, and the imaginary part of the feedback for the former is equivalent to plasma rotation. The work includes (1) analysis with a reduced resistive MHD model for a tokamak with finite βand with stepfunction current de…
The formation and melting of a mono-layered charged dust particle crystal in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma is studied. The nature of the melting/formation process is established as a first order phase transition from the nature of the variations in the Coulomb coupling parameter, the dust temperature, the structural order parameter and from the existence of a hysteresis behavior. Our experimental results are distinctly different from existing theoretical predictions for 2D crystals based on the KTHNY mechanism or the Grain boundary induced melting and indicate a novel mechanism that is akin…
The force on a microparticle in a complex plasma by streaming ions, the so-called ion drag force, is not well known. However, it is important for the understanding of interesting phenomena in complex plasmas such as the void formation under microgravity conditions. The PK-4 experiment, which is developed for a later use on board of the International Space Station, is ideally suited for investigating this problem. In this experiment a complex DC-plasma is created in a glass tube in which the microparticles flow from the cathode to the anode. Measuring the microparticle velocities, the forces on…
We present the first observations of a square lattice formation in a monodisperse complex plasma system - a configurational transition phenomenon that has long been an experimental challenge in the field. The experiments are conducted in a tabletop L-shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx-II) device in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma environment. By a careful control of the vertical potential confining the charged particles as well as the strength of the ion wake charge interactions with the dust particles we are able to steer the system towards a crystalline phase that exhibits a square latt…
We consider a two-dimensional complex plasma layer containing charged dust particles in a perpendicular magnetic field. Computer simulations of both one-component and binary systems are used to explore the equilibrium particle dynamics in the fluid state. The mobility is found to scale with the inverse of the magnetic field strength (Bohm diffusion) for strong fields. For bidisperse mixtures, the magnetic field dependence of the long-time mobility depends on the particle species providing an external control of their mobility ratio. For large magnetic fields, even a two-dimensional model porou…
Understanding the agglomeration of dust particles in complex plasmas requires a knowledge of the basic properties such as the net electrostatic charge and dipole moment of the dust. In this study, dust aggregates are formed from gold coated mono-disperse spherical melamine-formaldehyde monomers in a radio-frequency (rf) argon discharge plasma. The behavior of observed dust aggregates is analyzed both by studying the particle trajectories and by employing computer models examining 3D structures of aggregates and their interactions and rotations as induced by torques arising from their dipole mo…
The full melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal was induced in a principally stable monolayer by localized laser stimulation. Two distinct behaviors of the crystal after laser stimulation were observed depending on the amount of injected energy: (i) below a well-defined threshold, the laser melted area recrystallized; (ii) above the threshold, it expanded outwards in a similar fashion to mode-coupling instability induced melting, rapidly destroying the crystalline order of the whole complex plasma monolayer. The reported experimental observations are due to the fluid mode-coupling instabi…
Agglomeration of highly charged microparticles was observed and studied in complex plasma experiments carried out in a capacitively coupled rf discharge. The agglomeration was caused by strong dust density waves triggered in a particle cloud by decreasing neutral gas pressure. Using a high-speed camera during this unstable regime, it was possible to resolve the motion of individual microparticles and to show that the relative velocities of some particles were sufficiently high to overcome the mutual Coulomb repulsion and hence to result in agglomeration. After stabilising the cloud again throu…
The penetration of a supersonic particle at the interface was studied in a binary complex plasma. Inspired by the experiments performed in the PK-3 Plus Laboratory on board the International Space Station, Langevin dynamics simulations were carried out. The evolution of Mach cone at the interface was observed, where a kink of the lateral wake front was observed at the interface. By comparing the evolution of axial and radial velocity, we show that the interface solitary wave is non-linear. The dependence of the background particle dynamics in the vicinity of the interface on the penetration di…
The structure of driven three-dimensional complex plasma clusters was studied experimentally. The clusters consisted of around 60 hollow glass spheres with a diameter of 22 microns that were suspended in a plasma of rf discharge in argon. The particles were confined in a glass box with conductive yet transparent coating on its four side walls, this allowed to manipulate the particle cluster by biasing the confining walls in a certain sequence. In this work, a rotating electric field was used to drive the clusters. Depending on the excitation frequency, the clusters rotated (10^4 - 10^7 times s…
The formation of self-consistent dust crystal and its melting is a well known phenomenon in rf generated plasma but remains challenging in DC glow discharge plasma. Here, we report the melting of a two dimensional dusty plasma crystal, suspended in the cathode sheath of a DC glow discharge plasma. The experiments are carried out in a $Π-$shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device where a stationary crystal of melamine formaldehyde particles is formed between the confining strips in a background of Argon plasma. The stable structure breaks and leads to a fluid state on reducing the neutral …
The PK-3 Plus laboratory onboard the International Space Station is used to form complex plasma with a liquidlike particle subsystem in metastable state and to observe the propagation of crystallization fronts corresponding to the surfaces of crystal domains. We propose the "axis" algorithm of solidlike particles identification, which makes it possible to isolate different domains and their surfaces as well. Determination of the three-dimensional front velocity is based on its definition implying that there exists a small area of the domain surface propagating along some line perpendicularly t…
