An interesting aspect in the research of complex (dusty) plasmas is the experimental study of the interaction of micro-particles with the surrounding plasma for diagnostic purposes. Local electric fields can be determined from the behaviour of particles in the plasma, e.g. particles may serve as electrostatic probes. Since in many cases of applications in plasma technology it is of great interest to describe the electric field conditions in front of floating or biased surfaces, the confinement and behaviour of test particles is studied in front of floating walls inserted into a plasma as well as in front of additionally biased surfaces. For the latter case, the behaviour of particles in front of an adaptive electrode, which allows for an efficient confinement and manipulation of the grains, has been experimentally studied in dependence on the discharge parameters and on different bias conditions of the electrode. The effect of the partially biased surface (dc, rf) on the charged micro-particles has been investigated by particle falling experiments. In addition to the experiments we also investigate the particle behaviour numerically by molecular dynamics, in combination with a fluid and particle-in-cell description of the plasma.
The benefits of thermionic emission from negatively biased electrodes for perpendicular electric field control in a magnetized plasma are examined through its combined effects on the sheath and on the plasma potential variation along magnetic field lines. By increasing the radial current flowing through the plasma thermionic emission is confirmed to improve control over the plasma potential at the sheath edge compared to the case of a cold electrode. Conversely, thermionic emission is shown to be responsible for an increase of the plasma potential drop along magnetic field lines in the quasi-n…
Biased electrodes are common components of plasma sources and diagnostics. The plasma-electrode interaction is mediated by an intervening sheath structure that influences properties of the electrons and ions contacting the electrode surface, as well as how the electrode influences properties of the bulk plasma. A rich variety of sheath structures have been observed, including ion sheaths, electron sheaths, double sheaths, double layers, anode glow, and fireballs. These represent complex self-organized responses of the plasma that depend not only on the local influence of the electrode, but als…
It is well known that additional ionization in the vicinity of a positively biased electrode immersed into a weakly ionized plasma is responsible for a hysteresis in the electrode current-voltage characteristics and the current self-oscillations rise. Here we show both experimentally and theoretically that under certain conditions these phenomena cannot be correctly interpreted once considered separately from the reference electrode current-voltage characteristics. It is shown that small electrodes can be separated into three groups according to the relation between the electrode and the refer…
An investigation of the selfconsistent ambipolar charge kinetics across a negatively biased semiconducting plasma-solid interface is presented. For the specific case of a thin germanium layer with nonpolar electron-phonon scattering, sandwiched between an Ohmic contact and a collisionless argon plasma, we calculate the current-voltage characteristic and show that it is affected by the electron microphysics of the semiconductor. We also obtain the spatially and energetically resolved fluxes and charge distributions inside the layer, visualizing thereby the behavior of the charge carriers respon…
In steady-state, the plasma loss rate to the chamber wall is balanced by the ionization rate in the hot-filament discharges. This balance in the loss rate and ionization rate maintains the quasi--neutrality of the bulk plasma. In this report, we have studied the properties of bulk plasma in the presence of an auxiliary (additional) biased metal disk, which is working as a sink, in low-pressure helium plasma. A single Langmuir probe and emissive probe are used to characterize the plasma for various biases (positive and negative) to the metal disk, which was placed along the discharge axis insid…
We report, for the first time, quadrupole mass spectrometry of neutral and positive ionic hydrocarbon species measured at the rf biased substrate electrode of an inductively coupled plasma for acetylene rich C2H2:Ar mixtures under various bias, frequency and pressure conditions. It has been observed that, irrespective of initial gas mixture, the resultant plasma is dominated by argon neutrals and ions. This is attributed to highly efficient conversion of acetylene to C2H due to the enhanced electron density compared to a standard capacitive plasma where the acetylene (neutral and ion) species …
We report the results of a study of the role of prescribed geometrical structures on the front of a target in determining the energy and spatial distribution of relativistic laser-plasma electrons. Our 3D PIC simulation studies apply to short-pulse, high intensity laser pulses, and indicate that a judicious choice of target front-surface geometry provides the realistic possibility of greatly enhancing the yield of high energy electrons, while simultaneously confining the emission to narrow (< 5 degree) angular cones.
The acceleration of ions in the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with overdense plasmas is investigated with particle-in-cell simulations. For circular polarization of the laser pulses, high-density ion bunches moving into the plasma are generated at the laser-plasma interaction surface. A simple analytical model accounts for the numerical observations and provides scaling laws for the ion bunch energy and generation time as a function of pulse intensity and plasma density.
The theory of the ion cyclotron (IC) electrostatic parametric instabilities of the inhomogeneous plasma which are driven by the inhomogeneous electric field of the fast wave (FW) in front of FW antenna is developed. It is found that the spatial inhomogeneity of the parametric IC turbulence and of the drift turbulence is at the origin of the flows which transport a large part of FW power, deposited to the pedestal plasma, to the scrape-off layer and later to the divertor mostly along field lines.
The PK-3 Plus laboratory onboard the International Space Station is used to form complex plasma with a liquidlike particle subsystem in metastable state and to observe the propagation of crystallization fronts corresponding to the surfaces of crystal domains. We propose the "axis" algorithm of solidlike particles identification, which makes it possible to isolate different domains and their surfaces as well. Determination of the three-dimensional front velocity is based on its definition implying that there exists a small area of the domain surface propagating along some line perpendicularly t…
The form of a sheath near a small electrode, with bias changing from below to above the plasma potential is studied using 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Five cases are studied: (A) an electrode biased more than the electron temperature ($T_e/e$) below the plasma potential, (B) an electrode biased less than $T_e/2e$ below the plasma potential, (C) an electrode biased nearly at the plasma potential, (D) an electrode biased more than $T_i/2e$ but less than $T_e/2e$ above the plasma potential, and (E) an electrode biased much greater than $T_e/2e$ above the plasma potential. In case (A), t…
We observe shock-front separation and species-dependent shock widths in multi-ion-species collisional plasma shocks, which are produced by obliquely merging plasma jets of a He/Ar mixture (97% He and 3% Ar by initial number density) on the Plasma Liner Experiment [S. C. Hsu et al., IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 46, 1951 (2018)]. Visible plasma emission near the He-I 587.6 nm and Ar-II 476.5-514.5 nm lines are simultaneously recorded by splitting a single visible image of the shock into two different fast-framing cameras with different narrow bandpass filters (589 +/- 5 nm for observing the He-I line…
Composition analysis of LiF-C thin film for neutral and ionic contributions in Front Ablation (FA) and Back Ablation (BA) geometries in vacuum and 2\times10-1 mbar argon has been done. Temporal evolution of ionic to neutral ratio and neutral abundance for both the geometries has been estimated. For neutral abundance, two approaches viz Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) analysis as well as integrated intensity ratio of Li I 670.1 nm and Li I 610.3 nm lines assuming LTE conditions are explored. The present attempt will be interesting from the view point of understanding the evolution of …
Ion energy distributions have been determined at the rf-bias electrode in an inductively-coupled acetylene-argon plasma for various substrate bias voltages and frequencies under conditions suitable for film deposition. These are compared with those obtained at the grounded wall of a capacitively coupled plasma. In the former, for pressures up to 25 mTorr, the IEDs exhibit bimodal structures with peak separation values that follow the expected dependence on voltage and frequency. At higher pressures, 120 mTorr, the bimodal structure is replaced by a single peak. For all conditions, the dominant…
In this work linear stability analysis of a magnetized dusty plasma with an anisotropic dust component having transversal motions much stronger than motions parallel to the external magnetic field, and isotropic light plasma components is described. Such a situation presumably establishes in a shock compressed space dusty plasma downstream the shock front. Oblique low-frequency magneto-hydrodynamic waves ($ω\ll ω_{cd}$, $ω_{cd}$ being the dust cyclotron frequency) are shown to be undergone to the mirror instability. Consequences for nonthermal dust destruction behind shock fronts in the inters…
The production of negative ions is of significant interest for applications including mass spectrometry, materials surface processing, and neutral beam injection for magnetic confined fusion. Neutral beam injection sources maximise negative ion production through the use of surface production processes and low work function metals, which introduce complex engineering. Investigating materials and techniques to avoid the use of low work function metals is of interest to broaden the application of negative ion sources and simplify future devices. In this study, we use pulsed sample biasing to inv…
This paper discusses numerical and experimental results on frequency downshifting and upshifting of a 10 $μ$m infrared laser to cover the entire wavelength (frequency) range from $λ$=1-150 $μ$m ($ν$=300-2 THz) using two different plasma techniques. The first plasma technique utilizes frequency downshifting of the drive laser pulse in a nonlinear plasma wake. Based on this technique, we have proposed and demonstrated that in a tailored plasma structure multi-millijoule energy, single-cycle, long-wavelength IR (3-20 $μ$m) pulses can be generated by using an 810 nm Ti:sapphire drive laser. Here w…
Equilibrating gravitation by electric forces, microparticles can be confined in the plasma sheath above suitably biased local electrodes.Their position depends on the detailed structure of the plasma sheath and on the charge that the particles acquire in the surrounding plasma, that is by the electron and ion currents towards it. Bias switching experiments reveal how the charge and equilibrium position of the microparticle change upon altered sheath conditions. We observe similar particle behaviors also in the afterglow of the discharge for a persisting bias voltage on the electrode: damped os…
The output of highly charged ions from an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) consists of ionic losses from a highly confined plasma. Therefore, an increase of the output of the ions of interest always is a compromise between an increase in the confinement and an increase of the losses. One route towards a solution consists of attacking the losses in directions (i.e., radial directions) that do not contribute to the required output. This was demonstrated in an experiment (using the Kei ECRIS at NIRS, Japan) where radial losses were electrostatically reduced by positively biasing one…
The formation of small but finite amplitude electrostatic shocks in the propagation of quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) obliquely to an external magnetic field is reported in a quantum electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasma. Such shocks are seen to have double-layer (DL) structures composed of the compressive and accompanying rarefactive slow-wave fronts. Existence of such DL shocks depends critically on the quantum coupling parameter $H$ associated with the Bohm potential and the positron to electron density ratio $δ$. The profiles may, however, steepen initially and reach a steady state with…
The role of liquid ions in the dusty plasma produced by laser ablation in a liquid environment is still unclear. For that purpose, we utilized the self-similar approach to investigate the effect of liquid ions on plasma expansion front. The fluid equations have been used for dust particles and ion species in addition to superthermal electron distribution. We treat the expansion process in the absence and existence of liquid ions. The impact of the dust-to-ion initial number density ratio, superthermality factor kappa, dust-to-electrons initial temperature ratio, and dust-ions atomic number on …
In the effort of achieving high-energetic ion beams from the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with a plasma, volumetric acceleration mechanisms beyond Target Normal Sheath Acceleration have gained attention. A relativisticly intense laser can turn a near critical density plasma slowly transparent, facilitating a synchronized acceleration of ions at the moving relativistic critical density front. While simulations promise extremely high ion energies in in this regime, the challenge resides in the realization of a synchronized movement of the ultra-relativistic laser pulse ($a_0\gtrsim 30$…
The production of negative ions is of significant interest for applications including mass spectrometry, particle acceleration, material surface processing, and neutral beam injection for magnetic confinement fusion. Methods to improve the efficiency of the surface production of negative ions, without the use of low work function metals, are of interest for mitigating the complex engineering challenges these materials introduce. In this study we investigate the production of negative ions by doping diamond with nitrogen. Negatively biased ($-20$ V or $-130$ V), nitrogen doped micro-crystalline…
A pump-probe polarimetric technique is demonstrated, which provides a complete, temporally and spatially-resolved mapping of the megagauss magnetic fields generated in intense short-pulse laser-plasma interactions. A normally-incident time-delayed probe pulse reflected from its critical surface undergoes a change in its ellipticity according to the magneto-optic Cotton-Mouton effect due to the azimuthal nature of the ambient self-generated megagauss magnetic fields. The temporal resolution of the magnetic field mapping is of the order of the pulsewidth, whereas a spatial resolution of a few mi…
A review of the theoretical and computational aspects of plasma-wall transition is presented. The conditions for the existence of plasma sheaths in front of a solid surface are established. Various regimes are analyzed -collisionless and collisional. fluid and kinetic, with and without ionization. The partition of the plasma-wall transition into distinct regions (Debye sheath, quasineutral presheath. magnetic presheath, etc...) is also discussed. Applications to the theory of electrostatic probes are illustrated by means of a recently developed kinetic model. The influence of the probe on ion …
Electric fields in a plasma that conducts a high-current pulse are measured as a function of time and space. The experiment is performed using a coaxial configuration, in which a current rising to 160 kA in 100 ns is conducted through a plasma that prefills the region between two coaxial electrodes. The electric field is determined using laser spectroscopy and line-shape analysis. Plasma doping allows for 3D spatially resolved measurements. The measured peak magnitude and propagation velocity of the electric field is found to match those of the Hall electric field, inferred from the magnetic-f…
Whistler mode wave is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves are a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyse data with the high time resolution from the multi-scale magnetospheric spacecraft in the weak magnetic environment (i.e., foreshock) enabling a relatively long gyro-period of whistler mode wave. Moreover, we develop a novel approach to separa…
We analyze the turbulence driven particle transport in Texas Helimak (K. W. Gentle and Huang He, Plasma Sci. and Technology, 10, 284 (2008)), a toroidal plasma device with one-dimensional equilibrium with magnetic curvature and shear. Alterations on the radial electric field, through an external voltage bias, change spectral plasma characteristics inducing a dominant frequency for negative bias values and a broad band frequency spectrum for positive bias values. For negative biased plasma discharges, the transport is high where the waves propagate with phase velocities near the plasma flow vel…
We present a new mechanism of attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses generation from a relativistic laser-driven overdense plasma surfaces in the wavebreaking regime. Through particle-in-cell simulations and analysis, we demonstrate that the observed ultrashort XUV emission for the parameters we considered is predominantly due to a strong plasma-density oscillation subsequent to wavebreaking. The coupling of the strong density variation and the transverse fields in the front surface layer gives rise to the transmitted emission with frequencies mainly around the local plasma frequency. Thi…
Cleaning of contamination of optical surfaces by amorphous carbon (a-C) is highly relevant for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. We have studied the mechanisms for a-C removal from a Si surface. By comparing a-C removal in a surface wave discharge (SWD) plasma and an EUV-induced plasma, the cleaning mechanisms for hydrogen and helium gas environments were determined. The C-atom removal per incident ion was estimated for different sample bias voltages and ion fluxes. It was found that H2 plasmas generally had higher cleaning rates than He plasmas: up to seven times higher for more negative…
It is shown that an undesirable curvature of the wave front of two-dimensional nonlinear wake wave excited in uniform plasma by a relativistic charged bunch or laser pulse may be compensated by radial change of the equilibrium plasma density.
Space and time resolved concentrations of helium metastable atoms in an atmospheric pressure radio-frequency micro-plasma jet were measured using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Spatial profiles as well as lifetime measurements show significant influences of air entering the discharge from the front nozzle and of impurities originating from the gas supply system. Quenching of metastables was used to deduce quantitative concentrations of intruding impurities. The impurity profile along the jet axis was determined from optical emission spectroscopy as well as their dependance on the…
We briefly report on a recent proposal (Fiore in J Phys A Math Theor 51:085203, 2018) for simplifying the equations of motion of charged particles in an electromagnetic (EM) field $F^{μν}$ that is the sum of a plane travelling wave $F_t^{μν}(ct\!-\!z)$ and a static part $F_s^{μν}(x,y,z)$; it adopts the light-like coordinate $ξ=ct\!-\!z$ instead of time $t$ as an independent variable. We illustrate it in a few cases of extreme acceleration, first of an isolated particle, then of electrons in a plasma in plane hydrodynamic conditions: the Lorentz-Maxwell \& continuity PDEs can be simplified or s…
A large volume surface plasma source (SPS) with a biased converter was developed for the Los Alamos linear accelerator. A large gas-discharge chamber with a multipole magnetic wall and 2 heated cathodes can support a discharge generating plasma. A cooled converter with a diameter of 5 cm and a potential of up to -300 V bombarded by positive ions and emits secondary negative ions, accelerates them and focuses in an emission aperture with a diameter of 6.4 mm. From this SPS, up to 18 mA of H- ions are extracted at a duty cycle of up to 10%. The emitted H- beam current is attenuated through H- de…
The dynamics of transient electric fields generated by the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with underdense plasmas has been studied experimentally with the proton projection imaging technique. The formation of a charged channel, the propagation of its front edge and the late electric field evolution have been characterised with high temporal and spatial resolution. Particle-in-cell simulations and an electrostatic, ponderomotive model reproduce the experimental features and trace them back to the ponderomotive expulsion of electrons and the subsequent ion acceleration.
We show both theoretically and experimentally that an electromagnetic wave can be totally absorbed by an overdense plasma when a subwavelength diffraction grating is placed in front of the plasma surface. The absorption is due to dissipation of surface plasma waves (plasmons-polaritons) that have been resonantly excited by the evanescent component of the diffracted electromagnetic wave. The developed theoretical model allows one to determine the conditions for the total absorption.
The properties of collisionless shocks, like the density jump, are usually derived from magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), where isotropic pressures are assumed. Yet, in a collisionless plasma, an external magnetic field can sustain a stable anisotropy. In \cite{BretJPP2018}, we devised a model for the kinetic history of the plasma through the shock front, allowing to self-consistently compute the downstream anisotropy, hence the density jump, in terms of the upstream parameters. This model dealt with the case of a parallel shock, where the magnetic field is normal to the front both in the upstream a…
Analytic model of stable shock-like structures in laser interaction with underdense plasma for identifying of phase and polarization dependent regime of laser wakefield accelerators
The electromagnetic energy equation is analyzed term by term in a 3D simulation of kinetic reconnection previously reported by \citet{vapirev2013formation}. The evolution presents the usual 2D-like topological structures caused by an initial perturbation independent of the third dimension. However, downstream of the reconnection site, where the jetting plasma encounters the yet unperturbed pre-existing plasma, a downstream front (DF) is formed and made unstable by the strong density gradient and the unfavorable local acceleration field. The energy exchange between plasma and fields is most int…
A computer simulation of dynamics of an optical discharge produced in the volume of a transparent dielectric (fused silica) by a focused femtosecond laser pulse was carried out taking into account the possibility of developing small-scale ionization-field instability. The presence of small foreign inclusions in the fused silica was taken into account with the model of a nanodispersed heterogeneous medium by using Maxwell Garnett formulas. The results of the calculations made it possible to reveal the previously unknown physical mechanism that determines the periodicity of the ordered plasma-fi…
The role of slow-mode MHD shocks in magnetic reconnection is one of great importance for energy conversion and transport, but in many astrophysical plasmas the plasma is not fully ionised. In this paper, we investigate, using numerical simulations, the role of collisional coupling between a proton-electron charge-neutral fluid and a neutral hydrogen fluid for the 1D Riemann problem initiated in a constant pressure and density background state by a discontinuity in the magnetic field. This system, in the MHD limit, is characterised by two waves: a fast-mode rarefaction wave that drives a flow t…
Electron ring velocity space distributions have previously been seen in numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection exhausts and have been suggested to be caused by the magnetization of the electron outflow jet by the compressed reconnected magnetic fields [Shuster et al., ${\it Geophys.~Res.~Lett.}, {\bf 41}$, 5389 (2014)]. We present a theory of the dependence of the major and minor radii of the ring distributions solely in terms of upstream (lobe) plasma conditions, thereby allowing a prediction of the associated temperature and temperature anisotropy of the rings in terms of upstream pa…
