Plasma kinetics of molecular hydrogen in the electrical discharge in Ar/CH3OH/H2O mixture is theoretically investigated for the first time. It is researched the dependence of [H2] on the breakdown field, the discharge power, solution compound and the argon pumping rate through the interelectrode gap. The highest hydrogen concentration is reached with the 20% methanol fraction in the solution. It is shown that [H2] grows as the linear function of the discharge power and decreases with the gas volume velocity increase.
An atmospheric plasma torch has been supplied with a gaseous mixture of helium, water vapour and/or oxygen to study the production of reactive species within its flowing post-discharge, in particular hydrogen peroxide. The mechanisms responsible for the production of H2O2 have been investigated by correlating measurements of mass spectrometry and absorption photospectrometry. An absolute quantification of H2O2 has also been achieved and indicated that for 5 mmol of water vapour injected in the He-H2O discharge, approximately 9.5 mol of H2O2 were produced in post-discharge.
In this work we report recent results of our experimental and theoretical studies related to plasma conversion of liquid ethanol into hydrogen-enriched syngas in the plasma-liquid system with the electric discharge in a gas channel with liquid wall using available diagnostics and numerical modeling.
This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental study of plasma-assisted reforming of ethanol into molecular hydrogen in a new modification of the "tornado" type electrical discharge. Numerical modeling clarifies the nature of the non-thermal conversion and explains the kinetic mechanism of nonequilibrium plasma-chemical transformations in the gas-liquid system and the evolution of hydrogen during the reforming as a function of discharge parameters and ethanol-to-water ratio in the mixture. We also propose a scheme of chemical reactions for plasma kinetics description. It is …
This paper presents the application of two classical models to high-resolution electric field measurements carried out in a hollow cathode discharge operated in pure hydrogen plasma. The electric field determination has been done via the Stark shifting and splitting of the 2S level of hydrogen, followed by optogalvanic detection. Two classical models, Rickards' and Wro{ń}ski's, are applied to these measurements with the objective of obtaining a first estimation on the discharge dynamics. The chosen models provide an idea of the ions movement, their energy and their mean free path at the cathod…
The results of a detailed kinetic study of the main plasma chemical processes in non-equilibrium ethanol/argon plasma are presented. It is shown that at the beginning of the discharge the molecular hydrogen is mainly generated in the reaction of ethanol H-abstraction. Later hydrogen is formed from active H, CH2OH and CH3CHOH and formaldehyde. Comparison with experimental data has shown that the used kinetic mechanism predicts well the concentrations of main species at the reactor outlet.
Photoelectron emission measurements have been performed using a filament-driven multi-cusp arc discharge volume production H^- ion source (LIISA). It has been found that photoelectron currents obtained with Al, Cu, Mo, Ta and stainless steel (SAE 304) are on the same order of magnitude. The photoelectron currents depend linearly on the discharge power. It is shown experimentally that photoelectron emission is significant only in the short wavelength range of hydrogen spectrum due to the energy dependence of the quantum efficiency. It is estimated from the measured data that the maximum photoel…
The complex theoretical and experimental investigation of plasma kinetics of the electric discharge in the mixture of air and ethanol-water vapors is carried out. The discharge was burning in the cavity, formed by air jets pumping between electrodes, placed in aqueous ethanol solution. It is found out that the hydrogen yield from the discharge is maximal in the case when ethanol and water in the solution are in equal amounts. It is shown that the hydrogen production increases with the discharge power and reaches the saturation at high value. The concentrations of the main stable gas-phase comp…
The Maxwell time is a typical time scale for the screening of an electric field in a medium with a given conductivity. We introduce a generalization of the Maxwell time that is valid for gas discharges: the \emph{ionization screening time}, that takes the growth of the conductivity due to impact ionization into account. We present an analytic estimate for this time scale, assuming a planar geometry, and evaluate its accuracy by comparing with numerical simulations in 1D and 3D. We investigate the minimum plasma density required to prevent the growth of streamers with local field enhancement, a…

Absolute values of VUV-emission of a 2.45 GHz microwave-driven hydrogen discharge are reported. The measurements were performed with a robust and straightforward method based on a photodiode and optical filters. It was found that the volumetric photon emission rate in the VUV-range (80-250 nm) is $10^{16}$-$10^{17}$ 1/cm$^3$s, which corresponds to approximately 8% dissipation of injected microwave power by VUV photon emission. The volumetric emission of characteristic emission bands was utilized to diagnostics of molecular plasma processes including volumetric rates of ionization, dissociation…
Physical conditions of formation of the ball lightning with high energy density considered as condensate of heavily excited atoms have been studied. In our approach the ball lightning formation processes is considered as a form of energy-structure self-organi-zation on the base of metastable substance and interchange. We propose different variants of the experimental method to create autonomous formation on the base of the closed capillary discharge allowing to obtain the objects with the life time up to 2s which burn through the foil, explode and can penetrate through the polymer wall without…

A 13.56 MHz RF discharge in hydrogen was studied within the pressure range of 1-17 10 Pa, and at power range of 400-1000 W. The electron energy distribution function and 18 electron density were measured by a Langmuir probe. The gas temperature was determined by 19 the Fulcher-$α$ system in pure H2, and by the second positive system of nitrogen using N2 as the 20 probing gas. The gas temperature was constant and equal to 450 $\pm$ 50 K in the Capacitively 21 Coupled Plasma mode (CCP), and it was increasing with pressure and power in the Inductively 22 Coupled Plasma mode (ICP). Also the vibrat…

Two complementary diagnostics, time resolved refractive index-based techniques and electrical measurements have been performed in order to study the discharge propagation and breakdown phenomena in water according to the two parameters. A single high voltage of duration between 100 $μ$S and 1 ms is applied between two 100 $μ$m diameter pl…
A Global Enhanced Vibrational Kinetic (GEVKM) model is presented for a new High Current Negative Hydrogen Ion Source (HCNHIS) developed by Busek Co. Inc. and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The HCNHIS consists of a high-pressure radio-frequency discharge (RFD) chamber where high-lying vibrational states of the hydrogen molecules are produced, a bypass system, a nozzle, and a low-pressure negative hydrogen ion production region where $\text{H}^-$ are generated by the dissociative attachment of low energy electrons to rovibrationally excited hydrogen molecules. The GEVKM is developed from momen…
In this report, we describe characteristics of a ring-structure hydrogen plasma heated in electron cyclotron resonance conditions and confined in a mirror magnetic trap and discuss the relative efficiency of secondary electrons and thermoelectrons in negative hydrogen and deuterium ion production. The obtained data and calculations of the balance equations for possible reactions demonstrate that the negative ion production is realized in two stages. First, the hydrogen and deuterium molecules are excited in collisions with the plasma electrons to high-laying Rydberg or vibrational levels in th…
A contour dynamics model for electrical discharges is obtained and analyzed. The model is deduced as the asymptotic limit of the minimal streamer model for the propagation of electric discharges, in the limit of small electron diffusion. The dispersion relation for a non planar 2-D discharge is calculated. The development and propagation of finger-like patterns are studied and their main features quantified.
A major obstacle for the understanding of long electrical discharges is the complex dynamics of streamer coronas, formed by many thin conducting filaments. Building macroscopic models for these filaments is one approach to attain a deeper knowledge of the discharge corona. Here we present a one-dimensional, macroscopic model of a propagating streamer channel. We represent the streamer as an advancing finite-conductivity channel with a surface charge density at its boundary. This charge evolves self-consistently due to the electric current that flows through the streamer body and within a thin …
Results of experimental investigation of the ECR discharge in a single coil magnetic field as an alternative to RF and helicon discharges for wide-aperture dense plasma fluxes production are presented. A possibility of obtaining wide-aperture high density hydrogen plasma fluxes with homogenous transverse distribution was demonstrated in such a system. The prospects of using this system for obtaining high current ion beams are discussed.
A method of creating plasma channels with controllable depth and transverse profile for the guiding of short, high power laser pulses for efficient electron acceleration is proposed. The plasma channel produced by the hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide is modified by a ns-scale laser pulse, which heats the electrons near the capillary axis. This interaction creates a deeper plasma channel within the capillary discharge that evolves on a ns-time scale, allowing laser beams with smaller spot sizes than would otherwise be possible in the unmodified capillary discharge.
In the Large helical device, a change of energetic particle mode is observed as He concentration is varied in ion-ITB type experiments, having constant electron density and input heating power but with a clear increase of central ion temperature in He rich discharges. This activity consists of bursty, but damped energetic interchange modes (EICs, X Du et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114 p.155003 (2015)), whose occurrence rate is dramatically lower in the He-rich discharges. Mechanisms are discussed for the changes in drive and damping of the modes with He concentration. These EIC bursts consist of ma…
X-ray lasers based on transitions in highly charged \textit{Ni}-like ions generating in the "water window" wavelength range can be pumped by compact laboratory discharge sources. This makes them promising candidates for use as compact coherent X-ray sources in laboratory applications including biological imaging and investigations of carbon containing materials. In this paper, the results of numerical simulations of the plasma dynamics and kinetics in an X-ray laser based on transitions in \textit{Ni}-like xenon ions are reported. The laser active medium is created by an extended low-inductive…
The post-discharge of an RF plasma torch supplied with helium and oxygen gases is characterized by mass spectrometry, optical emission spectroscopy and electrical measurements. We have proved the existence of a dc current in the post-discharge (1--20 A), attributed to the Penning ionization of atmospheric nitrogen and oxygenated species. The mechanisms ruling this dc current are investigated through experiments in which we discuss the influence of the O2 flow rate, the He flow rate and the distance separating the plasma torch from a material surface located downstream.
Pin-to-liquid discharges are investigated for the activation of liquids dedicated to agriculture applications. They are characterized through their electrical and optical properties, with a particular attention paid to their filaments and self-organized patterns occurring at the liquid interface. We show how modulating their interaction with ambient air can promote the production of reactive species in liquids such as H2O2, NO2- and NO3-. The effects of the resulting plasma activated media are reported on lentils seeds.
Streamer electrical discharges are often investigated with computer simulations of density models (also called drift-diffusion-reaction models). We review these models, detailing their physical foundations, their range of validity and the most relevant numerical algorithms employed in solving them. We focus particularly on schemes of adaptative refinement, used to resolve the multiple length scales in a streamer discharge without a high computational cost. We then report recent results from these models, emphasizing developments that go beyond cylindrically symmetrical streamers propagating in…
To find a viable alternative to SF6 with growing climate change regulations, proper evaluation of alternatives such as compressed air ought to be done. For medium voltage applications, the withstand voltage is used as the dimensioning criteria and this is dependent on the initiation and propagation of streamers which are precursors to electrical breakdown. For design optimization, a thorough understanding of the initiation and propagation mechanisms of such electrical discharges under different stresses, pressure etc. ought to be studied experimentally and numerically also via a predictive mod…
The reactivity of water vapor introduced in the flowing post-discharge of an RF atmospheric plasma torch is investigated through electrical characterization, optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry measurements. Due to the technical features of the plasma torch, the post-discharge can be considered as divided into two regions: an inner region (inside the plasma torch device) where the water vapor is injected and an outer region which directly interacts with the ambient air. The main reactions induced by the injection of water vapor are identified as well as those indicative of the …
General form of the non-local equation for an ionization source in glow discharge and hollow cathode 3D-simulation is formulated. It is a fundamental equation in a hollow cathode theory, which allows to make up a complete set of field equations for a self-consistent problem in a stationary glow discharge and a hollow cathode. It enables to describe adequately the region of negative glow and the hollow cathode effect. Here you can see first attempts to compare calculation results of electrical dependences (pressure - voltage) and experimental data, - under conditions of gradual appearance of th…
Plasma properties inside a hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide were modeled with dissipative magnetohydrodynamic simulations to enable analysis of capillaries of circular and square cross-sections implying that square capillaries can be used to guide circularly-symmetric laser beams. When the quasistationary stage of the discharge is reached, the plasma and temperature in the vicinity of the capillary axis has almost the same profile for both the circular and square capillaries. The effect of cross-section on the electron beam focusing properties were studied using the simulation-der…
Negative hydrogen ion sources are used as injectors into accelerators and drive the neutral beam heating in ITER. Certain processes in low-temperature hydrogen plasmas are accompanied by the emission of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission. Studying the VUV radiation therefore provides volumetric rates of plasma-chemical processes and plasma parameters. In the past we have used gasdynamic ECR discharge for volumetric negative ion production and investigated the dependencies between the extracted H$^-$ current density and various ion source parameters. It was shown that it is possible to reach up …

Characteristic features of this discharge is self-confinement of the discharge current magnitude, corresponding decrease of the current pulse duration and occurrence of an energy and substance ejection with rather unusual properties. Measurements of kinetics of the discharge current, the plasma radiation intensity and an electrical probe signal, as well as the tra…
Propane steam reforming using a sliding discharge reactor was investigated under atmospheric pressure and low temperature (420 K). Non-thermal plasma steam reforming proceeded efficiently and hydrogen was formed as a main product (H2 concentration up to 50%). By-products (C2-hydrocarbons, methane, carbon dioxide) were measured with concentrations lower than 6%. The mean electrical power injected in the discharge is less than 2 kW. The process efficiency is described in terms of propane conversion rate, steam reforming and cracking selectivity, as well as by-products production. Chemical proces…
The low-density limit of the electrical conductivity $σ(n,T)$ of hydrogen as the simplest ionic plasma is presented as function of temperature T and mass density n in form of a virial expansion of the resistivity. Quantum statistical methods yield exact values for the lowest virial coefficients which serve as benchmark for analytical approaches to the electrical conductivity as well as for numerical results obtained from density functional theory based molecular dynamics simulations (DFT-MD) or path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations. While these simulations are well suited to calculate $…
Nanosecond Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge (ns-SDBDs) are a class of plasma actuators that utilize a high-voltage pulse of nanosecond duration between two surface-mounted electrodes to create an electrical breakdown of air, along with rapid heating. These actuators usually produce multiple filaments when operated at high pulse frequencies, and the rapid heating leads to the formation of shock waves and complex flow fields. In this work we replicate a single filament of the ns-SDBDs and characterize the induced flow using velocity measurements from particle image velocimetry and density me…
We use a pin-grid electrode to introduce a corrugated electrical potential into a planar dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) system, so that the amplitude of the applied electric field has the profile of a two-dimensional square lattice. The lattice potential provides a template for the spatial distribution of plasma filaments in the system and has pronounced effects on the patterns that can form. The positions at which filaments become localized within the lattice unit cell vary with the width of the discharge gap. The patterns that appear when filaments either overfill or under-fill the latti…
In this work, we present the results of simulations carried out for N2-H2 capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges, running at low pressure (0.3-0.9 mbar), low power (5-20 W), and for amounts of H2 up to 5 pct. Simulations are performed using a hybrid code that couples a two-dimensional time-dependent fluid module, describing the dynamics of the charged particles in the discharge, to a zero-dimensional kinetic module, that solves the Boltzmann equation and describes the production and destruction of neutral species. The model accounts for the production of several vibrationally and elec…
It is well known that the non-thermal plasma processes using electrical discharge or electron beam are effective for the environmental pollutant removal. Especially, the electron beam can efficiently remove pollutant, because a lot of radicals which are useful to remove pollutant can be easily produced by high-energy electrons. We have developed a compact 100kV secondary emission electron gun to apply NOX removal. The device offers several inherent advantages such as compact in size, wide and uniform electron beam. Besides, the device offers good capability in high repetition rate pulsed opera…
Parallel Micro Hollow Cathodes Discharges are characterised by electrical and spectroscopic studies and by using an ICCD camera. V-I curves present a hysteresis cycle between Townsend and normal glow regimes. For I d =4-10mA, gas temperature ranges between 300-500{\textdegree}C. When the diameter of a hole decreases, a more significant discharge voltage is needed.
The control of the spatial distribution of micrometer-sized dust particles in capacitively coupled radio frequency discharges is relevant for research and applications. Typically, dust particles in plasmas form a layer located at the sheath edge adjacent to the bottom electrode. Here, a method of manipulating this distribution by the application of a specific excitation waveform, i.e. two consecutive harmonics, is discussed. Tuning the phase angle θbetween the two harmonics allows to adjust the discharge symmetry via the Electrical Asymmetry Effect (EAE). An adiabatic (continuous) phase shift …

We report the calculation of the deuterium compression quasi-isentrope in good agreement with experiments. We also solve the Wigner-Liouville equation of dense degenerate hydrogen calculating the initial equilibrium state by the PIMC method. The obtained particle trajectories determine the momentum-momentum correlation …
Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma actuators with an asymmetric, straight edge electrode configuration generate a wall-bounded jet without moving parts. Mechanistic description of the interaction between the Coulombic forces and fluid motion as a function of DBD parameters remains unclear. Discharge current is measured with a high temp…
The characteristics of atmospheric-pressure microdischarges excited by nanosecond high-voltage pulses are investigated in helium-nitrogen mixtures, as a function of the parameters of the excitation voltage pulses. In particular, cases of single-pulse excitation, unipolar and bipolar double-pulse excitation are studied, at different pulse durations, voltage amplitudes, and delay times (for the case of double-pulse excitation). Our investigations are carried out with a particle-simulation code that also comprises the treatment of the VUV resonance radiation in the plasma. The simulations allow g…
The electron sheath formation in a DC magnetised plasma of modified hollow cathode source is studied. The discharge consists of two plane parallel cathodes and a small cubical anode placed off axis at the center. The argon plasma is produced and the properties of the plasma in response to the sheath formation near the anode are studied using electrical and optical diagnostics. In particular, the effect of pressure, magnetic field on discharge parameters such as discharge current, plasma potential, plasma density and electron temperature is studied. The discharge showed an onset of anode glow a…
The effect of a magnetic field on the characteristics of capacitively coupled radio frequency discharges is investigated and found to be substantial. A one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation shows that geometrically symmetric discharges can be asymmetrized by applying a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field. This effect is similar to the recently discovered electrical asymmetry effect. Both effects act independently, they can work in the same direction or compensate each other. Also the ion energy distribution functions at the electrodes are strongly affected by the magnetic field, altho…

This double glow plasma surface metallurgy technology can use any element in the periodic table of chemical elements for surface alloying of metal materials. Countless surface alloys with special physical and chemical properties have been produced on the surfaces of conductive materials.By using double glow discharge phenomenon,a series of new plasma …
Recently a novel concept for collisionless electron heating and plasma generation at low pressures was proposed theoretically (U Czarnetzki and Kh Tarnev, Phys. Plasmas 21 (2014) 123508). A more detailed investigation of the underlying theory is presented in a companion paper (U Czarnetzki, submitted to PSST (2018), arXiv:1806.00505). Here, the new concept is experimentally realized for the first time by the INCA (INductively Coupled Array) discharge. The periodic vortex fields are…
