This study is designed to explore the two dimensional temperature maps of the atmospheric argon discharge consisting of pin-to-plane electrodes supplied by a high voltage DC source. After checking the stability of the micro discharge, the two dimensional image plane focused by a quartz lens was scanned by the fiber probe driven by a 3D Mobile Platform. The rotational and vibrational temperatures are calculated using nitrogen emissions collected by the high resolution spectrometer and high sensitive intensified charge coupled device (ICCD). The rotational temperature varies from 1558.15 K to 2621.14 K and vibrational temperature varies from 3010.38 K to 3774.69 K, indicating a great temperature gradient due to small discharge size. The temperature maps show a lateral expansion and a sharp truncation in the radial direction. A double layers discharge is identified, where an arc discharge coats the glow discharge.
It is shown that under the definite regime of interaction of the acoustic waves with low-temperature, partially ionized plasma it is possible to change the intensity of some spectral lines of atomic argon. It is shown also, that the dependence of the intensities of these spectral lines on the intensity of the acoustic wave has a hysteresis behavior.
A novel kind of electron beam sustained discharge is presented in which a 12keV electron beam is combined with a 2.45GHz microwave power to excite argon gas at atmospheric pressure in a continuous mode of operation. Optical emission spectroscopy is performed over a wide wavelength range from the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to the near infrared (NIR). Several effects which modify the emission spectra compared to sole electron beam excitation are observed and interpreted by the changing plasma parameters such as electron density, electron temperature and gas temperature.
An argon-xenon (Ar/Xe) plasma is used as a model system for complex plasmas. Based on this system, symmetric low-pressure capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges are examined utilizing Particle-In-Cell/Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC/MCC) simulations. In addition to the simulation, an analytical energy balance model fed with the simulation data is applied to analyze the findings further. This work focuses on investigating the ion dynamics in a plasma with two ion species and a gas mixture as background. By varying the gas composition and driving voltage of the single-frequency discharge, f…
The reactivity of water vapor introduced in the flowing post-discharge of an RF atmospheric plasma torch is investigated through electrical characterization, optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry measurements. Due to the technical features of the plasma torch, the post-discharge can be considered as divided into two regions: an inner region (inside the plasma torch device) where the water vapor is injected and an outer region which directly interacts with the ambient air. The main reactions induced by the injection of water vapor are identified as well as those indicative of the …
Space and time resolved concentrations of Ar ($^{3}P_2$) metastable atoms at the exit of an atmospheric pressure radio-frequency micro-plasma jet were measured using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. The discharge features a coaxial geometry with a hollow capillary as an inner electrode and a ceramic tube with metal ring as outer electrode. Absorption profiles of metastable atoms as well as optical emission measurements reveal the dynamics and the filamentary structure of the discharge. The average spatial distribution of Ar metastables is characterized with and without a target in …
A self-consistent hybrid model of standing and moving striations was developed for low-current DC discharges in noble gases. We introduced the concept of surface diffusion in phase space described by a tensor diffusion in the nonlocal Fokker-Planck kinetic equation for electrons in the collisional plasma. Electrons diffuse along surfaces of constant total energy between energy jumps in inelastic collisions with atoms. Numerical solutions of the 1d1u kinetic equation for electrons were obtained by two methods and coupled to ion transport and Poisson solver. We studied the dynamics of striation …
Using Monte Carlo Collisions (MCC) method, we have performed simulations of ion velocity distribution functions (IVDF) taking into account both elastic collisions and charge exchange collisions of ions with atoms in uniform electric fields for argon and helium background gases. The simulation results are verified by comparison with the experiment data of the ion drift velocities and the ion transverse diffusion coefficients in argon and helium. The recently published experimental data for the first seven coefficients of the Legendre polynomial expansion of the ion energy and angular distributi…
The electron kinetics in moving and standing striations in direct current and radio-frequency discharges is studied. The discharge current is such that the thermalizing electron-electron collisions are negligible and the hydrodynamic description of electron component of plasma is not valid. Therefore, the one-dimensional hybrid model is used which models the electron component by particle method, while the ions are described using the drift-diffusion approximation. It is obtained that the electron transport is non-local in space. The electron energy distribution in both discharges is of non-eq…
One-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is used to simulate the capacitively coupled argon plasma for a range of driving frequency from 13.56 MHz to 100 MHz. The argon chemistry set can, selectively, include two metastable levels enabling multi-step ionization and metastable pooling. The results show that the plasma density decreases when metastable atoms are included with higher discrepancy at higher excitation frequency. The contribution of multistep ionization to overall density increases with excitation frequency. The electron temperature increases with the inclusion of metastable atom…
Optical emission spectroscopy applied to non-equilibrium plasmas in molecular gases can give important information on basic plasma parameters, including the rotational, vibrational temperatures and densities of the investigated radiative states. In order to precisely understand the non-equilibrium of rotational-vibrational state distribution from investigated spectra without limiting presumptions, a state-by- state temperature-independent fitting procedure is the ideal approach. In this paper we present a novel software tool developed for this purpose, freely available for scientific community…
In this work, evolution of parameters of nanosecond repetitively pulsed (NRP) discharges in pin-to-pin configuration in air was studied during transient stage of initial twenty discharge pulses. Gas and plasma parameters in the discharge gap were measured using coherent microwave scattering (CMS), optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser Rayleigh scattering (LRS) for NRP discharges at repetition frequencies of 1, 10 and 100 kHz. Memory effects (when perturbations induced by the previous discharge pulse would not decay fully till the subsequent pulse) were detected for the repetition frequ…

A combination of numerical simulation as well as diagnostic methods including current measurement and optical emission spectroscopy (OES) based on nitrogen emissions is used. The applied methods supplement each other and resolve problems, which arise when these methods are used individually. Nitrogen is used as …

Various discharge parameters, including voltage, current, gas density, rotational/vibrational/gas temperature, and electron number density, were measured. Several different measurement techniques were used, including microwave Rayleigh scattering, laser Rayleigh scattering, optical emission spectroscopy enhanced with a nanosecond probing pulse, fast photography, and electrical parameter measure…
We study the effect of neutral atoms on the dynamics of a capillary discharge Z-pinch, in a regime for which a large soft-x-ray amplification has been demonstrated. We extended the commonly used one-fluid magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) model by separating out the neutral atoms as a second fluid. Numerical calculations using this extended model yield new predictions for the dynamics of the pinch collapse, and better agreement with known measured data.
Substantial developments in pattern recognition and machine learning offer unique advancements to study the deeper structures of plasma physics. We have employed the Kernel principal component analysis(KPCA) of Argon glow discharge plasmas over time-resolved UV-Vis spectra for different pressure scans. 3D vector fields obtained by KPCA reveal the chaotic structure, strange attractors. The presence of the cross magnetic field (B=100G) and the addition of pressure increase the degree of chaos. Lower scale vector fields show that phonon sinks and traps and cool the plasma electron temperatures. T…
Disruptions in tokamak plasmas may lead to the generation of runaway electrons that have the potential to damage plasma-facing components. Improved understanding of the runaway generation process requires interpretative modelling of experiments. In this work we simulate eight discharges in the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks, where argon gas was injected to trigger the disruption. We use a fluid modelling framework with the capability to model the generation of runaway electrons through the hot-tail, Dreicer and avalanche mechanisms, as well as runaway electron losses. Using experimentally base…
Axial emission profiles in a parallel plate dc micro discharge (feedgas: argon; discharge gap d=1mm; pressure p=10Torr) were studied by means of time resolved imaging with a fast ICCD camera. Additionally, volt-ampere (V-A) characteristics were recorded and Ar* metastable densities were measured by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). Axial emission profiles in the steady state regime are similar to corresponding profiles in standard size discharges (d=1cm, p=1Torr). For some discharge conditions relaxation oscillations are present when the micro discharge switches periodically…
Pin-to-liquid discharges are investigated for the activation of liquids dedicated to agriculture applications. They are characterized through their electrical and optical properties, with a particular attention paid to their filaments and self-organized patterns occurring at the liquid interface. We show how modulating their interaction with ambient air can promote the production of reactive species in liquids such as H2O2, NO2- and NO3-. The effects of the resulting plasma activated media are reported on lentils seeds.
In this work, the temporal decay of electrons produced by an atmospheric pin-to-pin nanosecond discharge operating in the spark regime was measured via a combination of microwave Rayleigh scattering (MRS) and laser Rayleigh scattering (LRS). Due to the initial energy deposition of the nanosecond pulse, a variance in local gas density occurs on the timescale of electron decay. Thus, the assumption of a constant collisional frequency is no longer applicable when electron number data is extracted from the MRS measurements. To recalibrate the MRS measurements throughout the electron decay period, …
A pin liquid anode DC discharge is generated in open air without any additional gas feeding to form self-organized patterns (SOPs) on various liquid interfaces. Axially resolved emission spectra of the whole discharge reveal that the self-organized patterns are formed below a dark region and are visible mainly due to the N2 transitions. The high energy N2 (C) level is mainly excited by the impact of electrons heated by the local increased electric field at the interface. For the first time, the effect of the liquid type on the SOP formation is presented. With almost the same other discharge co…
A new combined PIC-MCC approach is developed for accurate and fast simulation of a radio frequency discharge at low gas pressure and high density of plasma. Test calculations of transition between different modes of electron heating in a ccrf discharge in helium and argon show a good agreement with experimental data. We demonstrate high efficiency of the combined PIC-MCC algorithm, especially for the collisionless regime of electron heating.
This brief communication reports a new method for generation of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet at the downstream end of a flexible plastic tube. The device consists of a small chamber where dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is ignited in Argon. The discharge is driven by a conventional low frequency AC power supply. The exit of DBD reactor is connected to a commercial flexible plastic tube (up to 4 meters long) with a thin floating Cu wire inside. Under certain conditions an Ar plasma jet can be extracted from the downstream tube end and there is no discharge inside the plastic tube. Th…
We present the results of the experimental study of the influence of dusty structures on plasma. We have studied glow discharges in neon and argon with $\text{Al}_2 \text{O}_3$ polydisperse particles and melamine-formaldehyde monodisperse particles with the diameter of $\text{4.83} \; μm$. We used optical emission spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence methods to measure shift of excited atoms populations, which led to similar results. In most cases, the population change was negligible as compared to the inaccuracy. $\text{Al}_2 \text{O}_3$ particles in argon formed large structures whic…
The results from a series of experiments are presented whose purpose is to explore different schemes which may lead to the formation of pure metal plasmas in a capillary discharge with parameters appropriate for X ray lasing. The experiments were performed in ceramic wall capillary discharges at currents of up to 120 kA, with an available ID of between 3 and 8 mm and with lengths from 60 to 100 mm. Initial plasma conditions in the capillary exploit transient hollow cathode effects in a preionizing discharge. A laser focussed onto the back surface of the cathode initiates both beam activity in …
The axial light distributions in parallel-plate dc microdischarges in argon show similar behavior to large scale discharges. Between the low-current Townsend mode and the high current glow mode exists a large region of currents where different oscillations appear and the dynamic Volt-Ampere characteristic shows hysteresis behavior. During the oscillations the maximum peak intensity moves closer to the cathode, which is characteristic for the abnormal glow regime even though the average current is considerably smaller.
Using dust grains as probes in gas discharge plasma is a very promising, but at the same time very challenging method, as the individual external control of dust grains has to be solved. We propose and demonstrate the applicability of the RotoDust experiment, where the well controlled centrifugal force is balanced by the horizontal confinement field in plane electrode argon radio frequency gas discharges. We have reached a resolution of 0.1 V/cm for the electric field. This technique is used to verify numerical simulations and to map symmetry properties of the confinement in dusty plasma exper…
A parametric study of an underwater pulsed plasma discharge in pin-to-pin electrode configuration has been performed. The influence of two parameters has been reported, the water conductivity (from 50 to 500 $μ$S/cm) and the applied voltage (from 6 to 16 kV). Two complementary diagnostics, time resolved refractive index-based techniques and electrical measurements have been performed in order to study the discharge propagation and breakdown phenomena in water according to the two parameters. A single high voltage of duration between 100 $μ$S and 1 ms is applied between two 100 $μ$m diameter pl…
A microwave discharge of atmospheric pressure, maintained by focused CW radiation of a 24-GHz gyrotron in an argon flow in an external air atmosphere, was investigated. The electron temperature was determined by the current-voltage curve of a dual Langmuir probe placed in a plasma torch. The electron temperature was also estimated from plasma emission spectra within the framework of a coronal plasma model. The obtained values of the electron temperature coincide within the measurement accuracy. Also, the electron temperature is many times higher than the gas temperature. This fact allows us to…
The effects of the discharge voltage on the formation and nature of electric field transients in a symmetric, collisionless, very high frequency, capacitively coupled plasma are studied using a self-consistent particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code. At a driving frequency of 60 MHz and 5 mTorr of argon gas pressure, the discharge voltage is varied from 10V to 150 V for a fixed discharge gap. It is observed that an increase in the discharge voltage causes filamentation in the electric field transients and to create multiple higher harmonics in the bulk plasma. Correspondingly, higher harmonics,…
The available diagnostics for atmospheric micro-plasmas remain limited and relatively complex to implement; so we present a radio-frequency technique for diagnosing a key parameter here. The technique allows one to estimate the dependencies of the electron density by measuring the RF-impedance of the micro-plasma and analyzing it with an appropriate equivalent circuit. This technique is inexpensive, can be used in real time and gives reasonable results for argon and helium DC micro-plasmas in holes over a wide pressure range. The electron density increases linearly with current in the expected…
Parameters of a high frequency capacitive discharge in argon in axially symmetric chambers of different geometries are studied in experiments and by means of two-dimensional kinetic modeling by the Particle-in-Cell method. It is demonstrated that a change in the ratio of the areas of the driven and grounded electrodes can substantially increase the ion energy on the electrode practically without disturbing the plasma parameters. Particular attention is paid to studying the self-bias voltage and the ion distribution function on the electrode for gas pressures ranging from 15 to 70 mTorr. The re…
We apply particle based kinetic simulations to explore the characteristics of a low-pressure gas discharge driven by high-voltage ( $\sim$ kV) pulses with alternating polarity, with a duty cycle of $\approx$ 1% and a repetition rate of 5 kHz. The computations allow tracing the spatio-temporal development of several discharge characteristics, the potential and electric field distributions, charged particle densities and fluxes, the mean ion energy at the electrode surfaces, etc. As such discharges have important surface processing applications, e.g. in the treatment of artificial bones, we anal…
In this article, the stability of a complex plasma monolayer levitating in the sheath of the poweredelectrode of an asymmetric capacitively coupled radio-frequency argon discharge is studied. Com-pared to earlier studies, a better integration of the experimental results and theory is achieved byoperating with actual experimental control parameters such as the gas pressure and the dischargepower. It is shown that for a given microparticle monolayer at a fixed discharge power there existtwo threshold pressures: (i) above a specific pressure p cryst , the monolayer always crystallises; (ii)below …
Microplasmas operated at atmospheric pressure show a number of peculiar dynamic phenomena. One of these phenomena is self-pulsing, which is characterized by intrinsic pulsing behavior of a DC driven plasma discharge. This work focuses on the numerical simulation of self-pulsing in a micro thin cathode discharge operated in atmospheric pressure argon. By means of a hybrid plasma model we show self-pulsing of the discharge in the expected MHz frequency range and described its actual origin.
Different ways to achieve the stabilization of a linear z-pinch by a superimposed shear flow are analyzed. They are: 1) Axial shear flow proposed by Arber and Howell with the pinch discharge in its center, and experimentally tested by Shumlak et al. 2) Spiral flow of a dense low temperature plasma surrounding a dense pinch discharge. 3) A thin metallic projectile shot at a high velocity through the center of the pinch discharge. 4) The replacement of the high velocity projectile by the shape charge effect jet in a conical implosion. 5) The replacement of the jet by a stationary wire inside the…
Using a relaxation oscillator circuit, breakdown ($V_{\mathrm{BD}}$) and quench ($V_{\mathrm{Q}}$) voltages of a DC discharge microplasma between two needle probes are measured. High resolution modified Paschen curves are obtained for argon microplasmas including a quench voltage curve representing the voltage at which the plasma turns off. It is shown that, for a point to point microgap (e.g. the microgap between two needle probes) which describes many realistic microdevices, neither Paschen's law applies nor field emission is noticeable. Although normally $V_{\mathrm{BD}}>V_{\mathrm{Q}}$, it…
Nanoparticles are produced in sputtering magnetron discharges operating with a tungsten cathode at 30 Pa argon pressure. Structure analyses show that they are of core-shell type. The core is a monocrystal mainly in the metastable beta-tungsten phase and the shell is made of tungsten oxide. The origin of the metastable phase is attributed to the presence of residual oxygen in the device. Since this phase transforms into the stable alpha-tungsten phase by annealing, a standard model on the thermal balance of nanoparticles was used to find the temperature that they can reach under the considered …
Particle-in-cell with Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) is a fully kinetic, particle based numerical simulation method with increasing popularity in the field of low temperature gas discharge physics. Already in its simplest form (electrostatic, one-dimensional geometry, and explicit time integration), it can properly describe a wide variety of complex, non-local, non-linear phenomena in electrical gas discharges at the microscopic level with high accuracy. However, being a numerical model working with discretized temporal and (partially) spatial coordinates, its stable and accurate operation l…
We studied the macro evolution of the micro atmospheric glow discharge generated between a micro argon jet into ambient air and static water. The micro discharge behaves similarly to a complex ecosystem. Non-linear behaviors are found for the micro discharge when the water acts as a cathode, different from the discharge when water behaves as an anode. Groups of snapshots of the micro discharge formed at different discharge currents are captured by an intensified charge-coupled device with controlled exposure time, and each group consisted of 256 images taken in succession. Edge detection metho…
The in-depth oxygen diffusion into a low density polyethylene film is performed in the post-discharge of an atmospheric plasma torch, supplied in argon as carrier gas and with or without oxygen as reactive gas. The chemical and structural properties of the polymer surface and bulk are studied in terms of plasma parameters (treatment time, power, and reactive gas flow rate). A good correlation between XPS and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses is demonstrated. The penetration depth of oxygen into the bulk of the polymer is investigated by angle resolved-XPS and time-of-flight SIMS…

The article reports the excitation of a helical argon atmospheric pressure plasma jet using a pulse modulated 13.56 MHz radiofrequency (RF) power source. This helical structure is observed in open ambient air which is far different from the conventional conical shape. This helical structure originates due to the periodic pressure variation in the discharge region caused by pulse modulated RF (2 kHz modulation frequency (fp)) and propagates downstream into the ambient air. The geometrical characteristics of the observed structure are explored using optical imaging. Moreover, the influence of va…
This paper studies a continuous atmospheric-pressure discharge maintained by focused subterahertz radiation of a 263 GHz gyrotron. A plasma torch propagating towards microwave radiation was sustained on an argon flow exiting a metal gas tube in the surrounding atmosphere of air. Using a high-speed camera, the spatial structure of the torch was studied and the temporal dynamics on timescales of the order of 20 ns was examined. The emission spectra of the optical wavelength range were used to estimate the excitation temperature of argon atoms and electron density. It was shown that a discharge o…
A high accurate self-consistent Monte-Carlo method including charged and neutral particle motion and resonance photon transport is developed and applied to simulation of positive column discharge in Argon. The distribution of power loss across the tube is investigated. It is shown that negative slope of current-voltage gradient curve can not be explained by only one factor. Diffusion of metastable atoms to the tube wall in the case of low current ($0.2-3$mA) responds for the most part of negative slope. For the high currents the variation of radiation power loss makes a main contribution to th…
The formation of self-consistent dust crystal and its melting is a well known phenomenon in rf generated plasma but remains challenging in DC glow discharge plasma. Here, we report the melting of a two dimensional dusty plasma crystal, suspended in the cathode sheath of a DC glow discharge plasma. The experiments are carried out in a $Π-$shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device where a stationary crystal of melamine formaldehyde particles is formed between the confining strips in a background of Argon plasma. The stable structure breaks and leads to a fluid state on reducing the neutral …
This research focuses on interaction of ionization waves (IW) generated in long discharge tubes (1 m length and 1.5 cm in diameter) filled with neon or argon under pressure about 1 Torr and, in particular, on simplest case of such interference which is collision of the opposite directed IW of positive polarity. The waves were triggered from two electrodes of the tube by simultaneous application of the same high voltage pulse and propagated toward the tube center until their collision. Space and time stability of the collisions was achieved via decreasing time delay of the initial breakdowns wh…
Experimental investigation of an electronegative cylindrical capacitively coupled geometrically asymmetric plasma discharge with an axisymmetric magnetic field
An 18-level argon collisional radiative model (CRM) suitable for low pressure was established. The model can be solved by combining the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) with Langmuir probe calibration. In the capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs) with different frequency and power, the electron temperature and density obtained by the model were compared with those measured by Langmuir probe. It is found that the calibration point at any frequency or power is suitable for the fixed pressure. This method was then applied to the diagnosis of triple-frequency (TF) CCPs, it is shown that the high …
An influence of a high-voltage (3-17 kV) 20 ns pulse on a weakly-ionized low-pressure (0.1-10 Pa) capacitively-coupled radiofrequency (RF) argon plasma is studied experimentally. The plasma evolution after pulse exhibits two characteristic regimes: a bright flash, occurring within 100 ns after the pulse (when the discharge emission increases by 2-3 orders of magnitude over the steady-state level), and a dark phase, lasting a few hundreds μs (when the intensity of the discharge emission drops significantly below the steady-state level). The electron density increases during the flash and remain…
A self-consistent particle-in-cell simulation study is performed to investigate the effect of driving frequency on the electric field non-linearity, electron heating mechanism and electron energy distribution function (EEDF) in a low pressure symmetric capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) discharge at a constant electron plasma frequency. The driving frequency is varied from 27.12 MHz to 100 MHz for a discharge gap of 3.2 cm in argon at a gas pressure of 1 Pa. The simulation results provide insight of higher harmonic generations in a CCP system for a constant electron response time. The spatio-te…
A Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma jet in a four electrodes configuration was investigated in order to improve the discharge parameters, such as, plasma power and rotational and vibrational temperatures of molecular species in the plasma plume. The improvement attempts were made by introducing an auxiliary floating electrode in a form of a metallic pin inside the DBD device. That piece was placed near the bottom of the main device, centered in relation to the four powered electrodes, which were covered with a dielectric material. By using metallic pins with different lengths, it was o…
