Aggregation equations, such as the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel model, are known to have an optimal threshold for global existence vs. finite-time blow-up. In particular, if the diffusion is absent, then all smooth solutions with finite second moment can exist only locally in time. Nevertheless, one can ask whether global existence can be restored by adding a suitable noise to the equation, so that the dynamics are now stochastic. Inspired by the work of Buckmaster et al. arXiv:1806.03734 showing that, with high probability, the inviscid SQG equation with random diffusion has global classical solutions, we investigate whether suitable random diffusion can restore global existence for a large class of active scalar equations in arbitrary dimension with possibly singular velocity fields. This class includes Hamiltonian flows, such as the SQG equation and its generalizations, and gradient flows, such as those arising in aggregation models. For this class, we show global existence of solutions in Gevrey-type Fourier-Lebesgue spaces with quantifiable high probability.
In this article, we study the parameter estimation of interacting particle systems subject to the Newtonian aggregation and Brownian diffusion. Specifically, we construct an estimator $\widehatν$ with partial observed data to approximate the diffusion parameter $ν$, and the estimation error is achieved. Furthermore, we extend this result to general aggregation equations with a bounded Lipschitz interaction field.
We build the iDLA cluster using drifted random walks, and study the limiting shapes they exhibit, with the help of sandpile models. For constant drift, the normalised cluster converges to a canonical shape S, which can be termed a true heat ball, in that it gives rise to a mean value property for caloric functions. The existence and boundedness of such a shape answers a natural yet open question in PDE theory.
Inspired by recent work on minimizers and gradient flows of constrained interaction energies, we prove that these energies arise as the slow diffusion limit of well-known aggregation-diffusion energies. We show that minimizers of aggregation-diffusion energies converge to a minimizer of the constrained interaction energy and gradient flows converge to a gradient flow. Our results apply to a range of interaction potentials, including singular attractive and repulsive-attractive power-law potentials. In the process of obtaining the slow diffusion limit, we also extend the well-posedness theory f…
We consider an aggregation-diffusion model, where the diffusion is nonlinear of porous medium type and the aggregation is governed by the Riesz potential of order s. The addition of a quadratic diffusion term produces a more precise competition with the aggregation term for small s, as they have the same scaling if s=0. We prove existence and uniqueness of stationary states and we characterize their asymptotic behavior as s goes to zero. Moreover, we prove existence of gradient flow solutions to the evolution problem by applying the JKO scheme.
We investigate the diffusion-aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion $Δu^m$ and singular interaction kernel $\mathcal{K}_s = (-Δ)^{-s}$ with $s\in(0,\frac{d}{2})$. We analyze the regime %($m>2-2s/d$, $d$ is the dimension) where the diffusive forces are stronger than the aggregation forces. In such regime, we show existence, uniform boundedness and Hölder regularity of solutions in the case that either $s>\frac{1}{2}$ or $m<2$. Uniqueness is proved for kernels with $s>1$.
We report on recent progress in the study of evolution processes involving degenerate parabolic equations what may exhibit free boundaries. The equations we have selected follow to recent trends in diffusion theory: considering anomalous diffusion with long-range effects, which leads to fractional operators or other operators involving kernels with large tails; and the combination of diffusion and aggregation effects, leading to delicate long-term equilibria whose description is still incipient.
In this paper, global-in-time existence and blow up results are shown for a reaction-diffusion equation appearing in the theory of aggregation phenomena (including chemotaxis). Properties of the corresponding steady-state problem are also presented. Moreover, the stability around constant equilibria and the non-existence of non-constant solutions are studied in certain cases.
This paper studies the large time behavior of aggregation-diffusion equations. For one spatial dimension with certain assumptions on the interaction potential, the diffusion index $m$, and the initial data, we prove the convergence to the unique steady state as time goes to infinity (equilibration), with an explicit algebraic rate. The proof is based on a uniform-in-time bound on the first moment of the density distribution, combined with an energy dissipation rate estimate. This is the first result on the equilibration of aggregation-diffusion equations for a general class of weakly confining…
We investigate stationary solutions of a non-local aggregation equation with degenerate power-law diffusion and bounded attractive potential in arbitrary dimensions. Compact stationary solutions are characterized and compactness considerations are used to derive the existence of global minimizers of the corresponding energy depending on the prefactor of the degenerate diffusion for all exponents of the degenerate diffusion greater than one. We show that a global minimizer is compactly supported and, in case of quadratic diffusion, we prove that it is the unique stationary solution up to a tran…
We consider a class of aggregation-diffusion equations on unbounded one dimensional domains with Lipschitz nonincreasing mobility function. We show strong $L^1$-convergence of a suitable deterministic particle approximation to weak solutions of a class aggregation-diffusion PDEs (coinciding with the classical ones in the no vacuum regions) for any bounded initial data of finite energy. In order to prove well-posedness and convergence of the scheme with no BV or no vacuum assumptions and overcome the issues posed in this setting by the presence of a mobility function, we improve and strengthen …
We prove the tightness of radially-symmetric solutions to 2D aggregation-diffusion equations, where the pairwise attraction force is possibly degenerate at large distance. We first reduce the problem into the finiteness of a time integral in the density on a bounded region, by introducing a new assumption on the interaction potential called the essentially radially contractive (ERC) property. Then we prove this finiteness by using the 2-Wasserstein gradient flow structure, combining with the continuous Steiner symmetrization curves and the local clustering curve. This is the first tightness re…
We investigate the existence of weak type solutions for a class of aggregation-diffusion PDEs with nonlinear mobility obtained as large particle limit of a suitable nonlocal version of the follow-the-leader scheme, which is interpreted as the discrete Lagrangian approximation of the target continuity equation. We restrict the analysis to nonnegative initial data in $L^{\infty} \cap BV$ away from vacuum and supported in a closed interval with zero-velocity boundary conditions. The main novelties of this work concern the presence of a nonlinear mobility term and the non strict monotonicity of th…
We derive uniform in time $L^\infty$-bound for solutions to an aggregation-diffusion model with attractive-repulsive potentials or fully attractive potentials. We analyze two cases: either the repulsive nonlocal term dominates over the attractive part, or the diffusion term dominates over the fully attractive nonlocal part. When the attractive potential has a weaker singularity ($2-n\leq B<A\leq2$), we use the classical approach by the Sobolev and Young inequalities together with differential iterative inequalities to prove that solutions have the uniform in time $L^{\infty}$-bound. When the r…
We consider a one-dimensional aggregation-diffusion equation, which is the gradient flow in the Wasserstein space of a functional with competing attractive-repulsive interactions. We prove that the fully deterministic particle approximations with piecewise constant densities introduced in~\cite{Di Francesco-Rosini} starting from general bounded initial densities converge strongly in $L^1$ to bounded weak solutions of the PDE. In particular, the result is achieved in unbounded domains and for arbitrary nonnegative bounded initial densities, thus extending the results in \cite{Gosse-Toscani, Mat…
We prove the existence of non-trivial global minimizers of a class of free energies related to aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion on $\Real^d$. Such equations arise in mathematical biology as models for organism group dynamics which account for competition between the tendency to aggregate into groups and nonlinear diffusion to avoid over-crowding. The existence of non-zero optimal free energy stationary solutions representing coherent groups in $\Real^d$ is therefore of interest. The primary contribution is the investigation of a notion of criticality associated with the global m…
We consider the drift-diffusion equation $u_t-εΔu + \nabla \cdot(u\nabla K^*u)=0$ in the whole space with global-in-time solutions bounded in all Sobolev spaces; for simplicity, we restrict ourselves to the model case $K(x)=-|x|$. We quantify the mass concentration phenomenon, a genuinely nonlinear effect, for radially symmetric solutions of this equation for small diffusivity $ε$ studied in our previous paper [3], obtaining optimal sharp upper and lower bounds for Sobolev norms.
In this paper we are interested in a degenerate parabolic system of reaction-diffusion equations arising in biology when studying cell adhesion at the protein level. In this modeling the unknown is the couple of the distribution laws of the freely diffusing proteins and of the fixed ones. Under sufficient conditions on the aggregation and unbinding probabilities, we prove the existence of solution of the considered system, as well as their positivity, boundedness and uniqueness. Moreover, we discuss the stability of the equilibrium solution. Finally, we show that the simpler and particular cho…
Typically, aggregation-diffusion is modeled by parabolic equations that combine linear or nonlinear diffusion with a Fokker-Planck convection term. Under very general suitable assumptions, we prove that radial solutions of the evolution process converge asymptotically in time towards a stationary state representing the balance between the two effects. Our parabolic system is the gradient flow of an energy functional, and in fact we show that the stationary states are minimizers of a relaxed energy. Here, we study radial solutions of an aggregation-diffusion model that combines nonlinear fast d…
We investigate the aggregation kinetics of sedimenting particles theoretically and numerically, using the advection-diffusion equation. Agglomeration, caused by both transport mechanisms (diffusion and advection), is important for small particles, like primary ash or soot particles in atmosphere, and large particles of equal or close size, where the advection mechanism is weak. For small Peclet numbers, which quantify the relative importance of diffusion and advection, we obtain the aggregation rates, as an expansion in Peclet numbers. For large Peclet numbers we use purely ballistic aggregati…
In this paper, we study pattern formations in an aggregation and diffusion cell migration model with Dirichlet boundary condition. The formal continuum limit of the model is a nonlinear parabolic equation with a diffusivity which can become negative if the cell density is small and spatial oscillations and aggregation occur in the numerical simulations. In the classical diffusion migration model with positive diffusivity and non-birth term, species will vanish eventually with Dirichlet boundary. However, because of the aggregation mechanism under small cell density, the total species density i…
We give sharp conditions for the large time asymptotic simplification of aggregation-diffusion equations with linear diffusion. As soon as the interaction potential is bounded and its first and second derivatives decay fast enough at infinity, then the linear diffusion overcomes its effect, either attractive or repulsive, for large times independently of the initial data, and solutions behave like the fundamental solution of the heat equation with some rate. The potential $W(x) \sim \log |x|$ for $|x| \gg 1$ appears as the natural limiting case when the intermediate asymptotics change. In orde…
We investigate a class of aggregation-diffusion equations with strongly singular kernels and weak (fractional) dissipation in the presence of an incompressible flow. Without the flow the equations are supercritical in the sense that the tendency to concentrate dominates the strength of diffusion and solutions emanating from sufficiently localised initial data may explode in finite time. The main purpose of this paper is to show that under suitable spectral conditions on the flow, which guarantee good mixing properties, for any regular initial datum the solution to the corresponding advection-a…
We investigate existence of stationary solutions to an aggregation/diffusion system of PDEs, modelling a two species predator-prey interaction. In the model this interaction is described by non-local potentials that are mutually proportional by a negative constant $-α$, with $α>0$. Each species is also subject to non-local self-attraction forces together with quadratic diffusion effects. The competition between the aforementioned mechanisms produce a rich asymptotic behaviour, namely the formation of steady states that are composed of multiple bumps, i.e. sums of Barenblatt-type profiles. The …
We are interested in studying the stationary solutions and phase transitions of aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion of porous medium-type, with exponent $1 < m < \infty$. We first prove the existence of possibly infinitely many bifurcations from the spatially homogeneous steady state. We then focus our attention on the associated free energy proving existence of minimisers and even uniqueness for sufficiently weak interactions. In the absence of uniqueness, we show that the system exhibits phase transitions: we classify values of $m$ and interaction potentials $W$ for which these p…
In this paper, a diffusion-aggregation equation with delta potential is introduced. Based on the global existence and uniform estimates of solutions to the diffusion-aggregation equation, we also provide the rigorous derivation from a stochastic particle system while introducing an intermediate particle system with smooth interaction potential. The theoretical results are compared to numerical simulations relying on suitable discretization schemes for the microscopic and macroscopic level. In particular, the regime switch where the analytic theory fails is numerically analyzed very carefully a…
We analyze under which conditions equilibration between two competing effects, repulsion modeled by nonlinear diffusion and attraction modeled by nonlocal interaction, occurs. This balance leads to continuous compactly supported radially decreasing equilibrium configurations for all masses. All stationary states with suitable regularity are shown to be radially symmetric by means of continuous Steiner symmetrization techniques. Calculus of variations tools allow us to show the existence of global minimizers among these equilibria. Finally, in the particular case of Newtonian interaction in two…
A class of nonlinear viscous transport equations describing aggregation phenomena in biology is considered. Optimal conditions on an interaction potential are obtained which lead either to the existence or to the nonexistence of global-in-time solutions.
Aggregation equations and Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) models for chemotaxis with nonlinear diffusion are popular models for nonlocal aggregation phenomenon and are a source of a number of interesting mathematical problems in nonlinear PDE. The purpose of this work is twofold. First, we continue our previous work, which focused on nonlocal aggregation, modeled with a convolution. The goal was to unify the local and global theory of these convolution-type models, including the identification of a sharp critical mass; however, some cases involving unbounded domains were left open. In particular, th…
We analyze free energy functionals for macroscopic models of multi-agent systems interacting via pairwise attractive forces and localized repulsion. The repulsion at the level of the continuous description is modeled by pressure-related terms in the functional making it energetically favorable to spread, while the attraction is modeled through nonlocal forces. We give conditions on general entropies and interaction potentials for which neither ground states nor local minimizers exist. We show that these results are sharp for homogeneous functionals with entropies leading to degenerate diffusio…
We study an implicit finite-volume scheme for non-linear, non-local aggregation-diffusion equations which exhibit a gradient-flow structure, recently introduced by Bailo, Carrillo, and Hu (2020). Crucially, this scheme keeps the dissipation property of an associated fully discrete energy, and does so unconditionally with respect to the time step. Our main contribution in this work is to show the convergence of the method under suitable assumptions on the diffusion functions and potentials involved.
We propose fully discrete, implicit-in-time finite-volume schemes for a general family of non-linear and non-local Fokker-Planck equations with a gradient-flow structure, usually known as aggregation-diffusion equations, in any dimension. The schemes enjoy the positivity-preservation and energy-dissipation properties, essential for their practical use. The first-order scheme verifies these properties unconditionally for general non-linear diffusions and interaction potentials, while the second-order scheme does so provided a CFL condition holds. Sweeping dimensional splitting permits the effic…

Recently, there has been a wide interest in the study of aggregation equations and Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) models for chemotaxis with degenerate diffusion. The focus of this paper is the unification and generalization of the well-posedness theory of these models. We prove local well-posedness on bounded domains for dimensions $d\geq 2$ and in all of space for $d\geq 3$, the uniqueness being a result previously not known for PKS with degenerate diffusion. We generalize the notion of criticality for PKS and show that subcritical problems are globally well-posed. For a fairly general class of p…
We study a nonlocal aggregation equation with degenerate diffusion, set in a periodic domain. This equation represents the generalization to $m > 1$ of the McKean-Vlasov equation where here the "diffusive" portion of the dynamics are governed by Porous medium self-interactions. We focus primarily on $m\in(1,2]$ with particular emphasis on $m = 2$. In general, we establish regularity properties and, for small interaction, exponential decay to the uniform stationary solution. For $m=2$, we obtain essentially sharp results on the rate of decay for the entire regime up to the (sharp) transitional …
In this paper, we propose a finite-volume scheme for aggregation-diffusion equations based on a Scharfetter--Gummel approximation of the quadratic, nonlocal flux term. This scheme is analyzed concerning well-posedness and convergence towards solutions to the continuous problem. Also, it is proven that the numerical scheme has several structure-preserving features. More specifically, it is shown that the discrete solutions satisfy a free-energy dissipation relation analogous to the continuous model. Consequently, the numerical solutions converge in the large time limit to stationary solutions, …
We consider a nonlocal aggregation equation with degenerate diffusion, which describes the mean-field limit of interacting particles driven by nonlocal interactions and localized repulsion. When the interaction potential is attractive, it is previously known that all steady states must be radially decreasing up to a translation, but uniqueness (for a given mass) within the radial class was open, except for some special interaction potentials. For general attractive potentials, we show that the uniqueness/non-uniqueness criteria are determined by the power of the degenerate diffusion, with the …
We consider a Keller-Segel model with non-linear porous medium type diffusion and nonlocal attractive power law interaction, focusing on potentials that are less singular than Newtonian interaction. Here, the nonlinear diffusion is chosen to be $m=\frac{2d}{d+2s}$ in such a way that the associated free energy is conformal invariant and there is a family of stationary solutions $U(x)=c\left(\fracλ{λ^2+|x-x_0|^2}\right)^{\frac{d+2s}{2}}$ for any constant $c$ and some $λ>0, x_0 \in \R^d.$ We analyze under which conditions on the initial data the regime that attractive forces are stronger than dif…
