In this paper, we establish moment and Bernstein-type inequalities for additive functionals of geometrically ergodic Markov chains. These inequalities extend the corresponding inequalities for independent random variables. Our conditions cover Markov chains converging geometrically to the stationary distribution either in $V$-norms or in weighted Wasserstein distances. Our inequalities apply to unbounded functions and depend explicitly on constants appearing in the conditions that we consider.
We prove that an irreducible aperiodic Markov chain is geometrically ergodic if and only if any separately bounded functional of the stationary chain satisfies an appropriate subgaussian deviation inequality from its mean.
In this paper, new conditions for the stability of V-geometrically ergodic Markov chains are introduced. The results are based on an extension of the standard perturbation theory formulated by Keller and Liverani. The continuity and higher regularity properties are investigated. As an illustration, an asymptotic expansion of the invariant probability measure for an autoregressive model with i.i.d. noises (with a non-standard probability density function) is obtained.
We consider Markov chain with spectral gap in $L^2$ space. Assume that $f$ is a bounded function. Then the probabilities of large deviations of average along trajectory satisfy Hoeffding's-type inequalities. These bounds depend only on the stationary mean, spectral gap and the end-points of support of $f$.
Let $(X_n)_{n \in\mathbb{N}}$ be a $V$-geometrically ergodic Markov chain on a measurable space $\mathbb{X}$ with invariant probability distribution $π$. In this paper, we propose a discretization scheme providing a computable sequence $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ of probability measures which approximates $π$ as $k$ growths to infinity. The probability measure $\widehatπ_k$ is computed from the invariant probability distribution of a finite Markov chain. The convergence rate in total variation of $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ to $π$ is given. As a result, the specific case of first order autoregressiv…
We give computable bounds on the rate of convergence of the transition probabilities to the stationary distribution for a certain class of geometrically ergodic Markov chains. Our results are different from earlier estimates of Meyn and Tweedie, and from estimates using coupling, although we start from essentially the same assumptions of a drift condition toward a ``small set.'' The estimates show a noticeable improvement on existing results if the Markov chain is reversible with respect to its stationary distribution, and especially so if the chain is also positive. The method of proof uses t…
We revisit functional central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusion processes. Translated in the language of partial differential equations of evolution, they appear as diffusion limits in the asymptotic analysis of Fokker-Planck type equations. We focus on the square integrable framework, and we provide tractable conditions on the infinitesimal generator, including degenerate or anomalously slow diffusions. We take advantage on recent developments in the study of the trend to the equilibrium of ergodic diffusions. We discuss examples and formulate open problems.
General Markov chains with a countably additive transition probability in arbitrary phase space are considered. Markov operators extend from the space of countably additive measures to the space of finitely additive measures. In the author's papers a theorem was earlier proved that if all invariant finitely additive measures of a Markov chain are countably additive, i.e. there are no invariant purely finitely additive measures, then their subspace is finite-dimensional and the Markov chain satisfies the Doob-Doeblin quasicompactness conditions. In the same paper, a partial inversion of this th…
We state and prove a quantitative version of the bounded difference inequality for geometrically ergodic Markov chains. Our proof uses the same martingale decomposition as \cite{MR3407208} but, compared to this paper, the exact coupling argument is modified to fill a gap between the strongly aperiodic case and the general aperiodic case.
We study properties of the Laplace transforms of non-negative additive functionals of Markov chains. We are namely interested in a multiplicative ergodicity property used in [18] to study bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We develop a general approach based on the use of the operator perturbation method. We apply our general results to two examples of Markov chains, including a linear autoregressive model. In these two examples the operator-type assumptions reduce to some expected finite moment conditions on the functional (no exponential moment conditions are assumed in this wo…
We investigate the convergence in distribution of sequential empirical processes of dependent data indexed by a class of functions F. Our technique is suitable for processes that satisfy a multiple mixing condition on a space of functions which differs from the class F. This situation occurs in the case of data arising from dynamical systems or Markov chains, for which the Perron--Frobenius or Markov operator, respectively, has a spectral gap on a restricted space. We provide applications to iterative Lipschitz models that contract on average.
For a Harris ergodic Markov chain $(X_n)_{n\ge 0}$, on a general state space, started from the so called small measure or from the stationary distribution we provide optimal estimates for Orlicz norms of sums $\sum_{i=0}^τf(X_i)$, where $τ$ is the first regeneration time of the chain. The estimates are expressed in terms of other Orlicz norms of the function $f$ (wrt the stationary distribution) and the regeneration time $τ$ (wrt the small measure). We provide applications to tail estimates for additive functionals of the chain $(X_n)$ generated by unbounded functions as well as to classical l…
We establish a moderate deviation principle for the maximum likelihood estimator of the four parameters of a geometrically ergodic Heston process. We also obtain moderate deviations for the maximum likelihood estimator of the couple of dimensional and drift parameters of a generalized squared radial Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We restrict ourselves to the most tractable case where the dimensional parameter satisfies $a>2$ and the drift coefficient is such that $b<0$. In contrast to the previous literature, parameters are estimated simultaneously.
We study the exponential growth of bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We suppose here that the lifetimes of the cells are dependent random variables, that the numbers of new cells are random and dependent. Lifetimes and new cells's numbers are also assumed to be dependent. We illustrate our results by examples, including some Markov models. Our approach is related to the behaviour of the Laplace transform of nonnegative additive functional of Markov chains and require weak moment assumption (no exponential moment is needed).
Consider the partial sums {S_t} of a real-valued functional F(Phi(t)) of a Markov chain {Phi(t)} with values in a general state space. Assuming only that the Markov chain is geometrically ergodic and that the functional F is bounded, the following conclusions are obtained: 1. Spectral theory: Well-behaved solutions can be constructed for the ``multiplicative Poisson equation''. 2. A ``multiplicative'' mean ergodic theorem: For all complex αin a neighborhood of the origin, the normalized mean of \exp(αS_t) converges exponentially fast to a solution of the multiplicative Poisson equation. 3. Edg…
In this paper we study the central limit theorem for additive functionals of stationary Markov chains with general state space by using a new idea involving conditioning with respect to both the past and future of the chain. Practically, we show that any additive functionals of a stationary and totally ergodic Markov chain with the variance of S_n divided by n uniformly bounded, satisfies a square root central limit theorem with a random centering. We do not assume that the Markov chain is irreducible and aperiodic. However, the random centering is not needed if the Markov chain satisfies stro…
We consider general Markov chains with discrete time in an arbitrary measurable (phase) space and homogeneous in time. Markov chains are defined by the classical transition function which within the framework of the operator treatment generates a conjugate pair of linear Markov operators in the Banach space of measurable bounded functions and in the Banach space of bounded finite additive measures. It is proved that the well-known Doeblin condition $ (D) $ of ergodicity (quasi\-compactness) of the Markov chain is equivalent to the condition $ (*) $: all finitely additive invariant measures of …
For sub-additive ergodic processes $\{X_{m,n}\}$ with weak dependence, we analyze the rate of convergence of $\mathbb{E}X_{0,n}/n$ to its limit $g$. We define an exponent $γ$ given roughly by $\mathbb{E}X_{0,n} \sim ng + n^γ$, and, assuming existence of a fluctuation exponent $χ$ that gives $\mathrm{Var}~X_{0,n} \sim n^{2χ}$, we provide a lower bound for $γ$ of the form $γ\geq χ$. The main requirement is that $χ\neq 1/2$. In the case $χ=1/2$ and under the assumption $\mathrm{Var}~X_{0,n} = O(n/(\log n)^β)$ for some $β>0$, we prove $γ\geq χ- c(β)$ for a $β$-dependent constant $c(β)$. These resu…
In this paper, we study Markov chains (MC) on topological spaces within the framework of the operator approach. We extend the Markov operator from the space of countably additive measures to the space of finitely additive measures. Cesaro means for a Markov sequence of measures and their asymptotic behavior in the weak topology are considered. It is proved ergodic theorem that in order for the Cesaro means to converge weakly to some bounded regular finitely additive (or countably additive) measure it is necessary and sufficient that all invariant finitely additive measures are not separable fr…
We establish quantitative bounds for rates of convergence and asymptotic variances for iterated conditional sequential Monte Carlo (i-cSMC) Markov chains and associated particle Gibbs samplers. Our main findings are that the essential boundedness of potential functions associated with the i-cSMC algorithm provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniform ergodicity of the i-cSMC Markov chain, as well as quantitative bounds on its (uniformly geometric) rate of convergence. Furthermore, we show that the i-cSMC Markov chain cannot even be geometrically ergodic if this essential boundedn…
We study ergodic properties of stochastic dissipative systems with additive noise. We show that the system is uniformly exponentially ergodic provided the growth of nonlinearity at infinity is faster than linear. The abstract result is applied to the stochastic reaction diffusion equation in $\mathbb R^d$ with $d\le 3$.
We consider homogeneous STIT tessellations in the $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^\ell$. Based on results for the spatial $β$-mixing coefficient an upper bound for the variance of additive functionals of tessellations is derived, using results by Yoshihara and Heinrich. Moreover, ergodic theorems are applied to subadditive functionals.
We establish verifiable general sufficient conditions for exponential or subexponential ergodicity of Markov processes that may lack the strong Feller property. We apply the obtained results to show exponential ergodicity of a variety of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with additive forcing, including 2D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. Our main tool is a new version of the generalized coupling method.
In this paper we prove a sharp quantitative version of the Kendall's Theorem. The Kendal Theorem states that under some mild conditions imposed on a probability distribution on positive integers (i.e. probabilistic sequence) one can prove convergence of its renewal sequence. Due to the well-known property - the first entrance last exit decomposition - such results are of interest in the stability theory of time homogeneous Markov chains. In particular the approach may be used to measure rates of convergence of geometrically ergodic Markov chains and consequently implies estimates on convergenc…
It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $β$-mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple it should p…
We study perturbation theory and uniform ergodicity for discrete-time Markov chains on general state spaces in terms of the uniform moments of the first hitting times on some set. The methods we adopt are different from previous ones. For reversible and non-negative definite Markov chains, we first investigate the geometrically ergodic convergence rates. Based on the estimates, together with a first passage formula, we then get the convergence rates in uniform ergodicity. If the transition kernel $P$ is only reversible, we transfer to study the two-skeleton chain with the transition kernel $P^…
In this paper we study the almost sure central limit theorem started from a point for additive functionals of a stationary and ergodic Markov chain via a martingale approximation in the almost sure sense. As a consequence we derive the quenched CLT for additive functionals or reversible Markov chains.
Max-stable processes are central models for spatial extremes. In this paper, we focus on some space-time max-stable models introduced in Embrechts et al. (2016). The processes considered induce discrete-time Markov chains taking values in the space of continuous functions from the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^3$ to $(0, \infty)$. We show that these Markov chains are geometrically ergodic. An interesting feature lies in the fact that the state space is not locally compact, making the classical methodology inapplicable. Instead, we use the fact that the state space is Polish and apply results pres…
We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) for a vector-valued additive functional of a Markov chain for almost every starting point with respect to an ergodic equilibrium distribution. The hypothesis is a moment bound on the resolvent.
In dimension $d\geq3$, we present a general assumption under which the renewal theorem established by Spitzer for i.i.d. sequences of centered nonlattice r.v. holds true. Next we appeal to an operator-type procedure to investigate the Markov case. Such a spectral approach has been already developed by Babillot, but the weak perturbation theorem of Keller and Liverani enables us to greatly weaken thehypotheses in terms of moment conditions. Our applications concern the v$-geometrically ergodic Markov chains, the $ρ$-mixing Markov chains, and the iterative Lipschitz models, for which the renewal…
We study the ergodic behaviour of a discrete-time process $X$ which is a Markov chain in a stationary random environment. The laws of $X_t$ are shown to converge to a limiting law in (weighted) total variation distance as $t\to\infty$. Convergence speed is estimated and an ergodic theorem is established for functionals of $X$. Our hypotheses on $X$ combine the standard "small set" and "drift" conditions for geometrically ergodic Markov chains with conditions on the growth rate of a certain "maximal process" of the random environment. We are able to cover a wide range of models that have hereto…
Let $(S_n)_n$ be a $R^d$-valued random walk ($d\geq2$). Using Babillot's method [2], we give general conditions on the characteristic function of $S_n$ under which $(S_n)_n$ satisfies the same renewal theorem as the classical one obtained for random walks with i.i.d. non-centered increments. This statement is applied to additive functionals of strongly ergodic Markov chains under the non-lattice condition and (almost) optimal moment conditions.
Usually the problem of drift estimation for a diffusion process is considered under the hypothesis of ergodicity. It is less often considered under the hypothesis of null-recurrence, simply because there are fewer limit theorems and existing ones do not apply to the whole null-recurrent class. The aim of this paper is to provide some limit theorems for additive functionals and martingales of a general (ergodic or null) recurrent diffusion which would allow us to have a somewhat unified approach to the problem of non-parametric kernel drift estimation in the one-dimensional recurrent case. As a…
In this paper we derive non asymptotic deviation bounds for $$¶_ν(|\frac 1t \int_0^t V(X_s) ds - \int V dμ| \geq R)$$ where $X$ is a $μ$ stationary and ergodic Markov process and $V$ is some $μ$ integrable function. These bounds are obtained under various moments assumptions for $V$, and various regularity assumptions for $μ$. Regularity means here that $μ$ may satisfy various functional inequalities (F-Sobolev, generalized Poincaré etc...).
Using the renewal approach we prove exponential inequalities for additive functionals and empirical processes of ergodic Markov chains, thus obtaining counterparts of inequalities for sums of independent random variables. The inequalities do not require functions of the chain to be bounded and moreover all the involved constants are given by explicit formulas whenever the usual drift condition holds, which may be of interest in practical applications e.g. to MCMC algorithms.
Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for additive functionals of BMC under $L^2$-ergodic conditions with three different regimes. This completes the pointwise approach developed in a previous work. As application, we study the elementary case of symmetric bifurcating autoregressive process, which justify the non-trivial hypothesis considered on the kernel transition of the BMC. We illustrate in this example the phase tran…
We argue that the spectral theory of non-reversible Markov chains may often be more effectively cast within the framework of the naturally associated weighted-$L_\infty$ space $L_\infty^V$, instead of the usual Hilbert space $L_2=L_2(π)$, where $π$ is the invariant measure of the chain. This observation is, in part, based on the following results. A discrete-time Markov chain with values in a general state space is geometrically ergodic if and only if its transition kernel admits a spectral gap in $L_\infty^V$. If the chain is reversible, the same equivalence holds with $L_2$ in place of $L_\i…
Using the renewal approach we prove Bernstein-like inequalities for additive functionals of geometrically ergodic Markov chains, thus obtaining counterparts of inequalities for sums of independent random variables. The coefficient in the sub-Gaussian part of our estimate is the asymptotic variance of the additive functional, i.e. the variance of the limiting Gaussian variable in the Central Limit Theorem for Markov chains. This refines earlier results by R. Adamczak and W. Bednorz, which were obtained under the additional assumption of strong aperiodicity of the chain.
An asymptotic expansion is established for time averages of translation flows on flat surfaces. This result, which extends earlier work of A.Zorich and G.Forni, yields limit theorems for translation flows. The argument, close in spirit to that of G.Forni, uses the approximation of ergodic integrals by holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles on trajectories of the flows. The space of holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles is finite-dimensional, and is given by an explicit construction. First, a symbolic representation for a uniquely ergodic translation flow is obtained following S.Ito and A.M. Vershik…
The main purpose of this article is to establish moderate deviation principles for additive functionals of bifurcating Markov chains. Bifurcating Markov chains are a class of processes which are indexed by a regular binary tree. They can be seen as the models which represent the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two offsprings. Unlike the previous results of Bitseki, Djellout \& Guillin (2014), we consider here the case of functions which depend only on one variable. So, mainly inspired by the recent works of Bitseki \& Delmas (2020) about the central limit theo…
Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for general additive functionals of BMC, and prove the existence of three regimes. This corresponds to a competition between the reproducing rate (each individual has two children) and the ergodicity rate for the evolution of the trait. This is in contrast with the work of Guyon (2007), where the considered additive functionals are sums of martingale increments, and only one regime app…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of additive functionals of random walks in random scenery. We establish bounds for the moments of the local time of the Kesten and Spitzer process. These bounds combined with a previous moment convergence result (and an ergodicity result) imply the convergence in distribution of additive observables (with a normalization in n^(1/4)).When the sum of the observable is null, the previous limit vanishes and we prove the convergence in the sense of moments (with a normalization in n^(1/8)).
We prove that every Markov solution to the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with periodic boundary conditions driven by additive Gaussian noise is uniquely ergodic. The convergence to the (unique) invariant measure is exponentially fast. Moreover, we give a well-posedness criterion for the equations in terms of invariant measures. We also analyse the energy balance and identify the term which ensures equality in the balance.
This paper discusses the irreducibility and geometric ergodicity of the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm. We consider cases where the number of steps of the symplectic integrator is either fixed or random. Under mild conditions on the potential $\F$ associated with target distribution $π$, we first show that the Markov kernel associated to the HMC algorithm is irreducible and recurrent. Under more stringent conditions, we then establish that the Markov kernel is Harris recurrent. Finally, we provide verifiable conditions on $\F$ under which the HMC sampler is geometrically ergodic.
We give general theorems on asymptotic normality for additive functionals of random tries generated by a sequence of independent strings. These theorems are applied to show asymptotic normality of the distribution of random fringe trees in a random trie. Formulas for asymptotic mean and variance are given. In particular, the proportion of fringe trees of size $k$ (defined as number of keys) is asymptotically, ignoring oscillations, $c/(k(k-1))$ for $k\ge2$, where $c=1/(1+H)$ with $H$ the entropy of the digits. Another application gives asymptotic normality of the number of $k$-protected nodes …
Strong invariance principles describe the error term of a Brownian approximation of the partial sums of a stochastic process. While these strong approximation results have many applications, the results for continuous-time settings have been limited. In this paper, we obtain strong invariance principles for a broad class of ergodic Markov processes. Strong invariance principles provide a unified framework for analysing commonly used estimators of the asymptotic variance in settings with a dependence structure. We demonstrate how this can be used to analyse the batch means method for simulation…
The Riemannian barycentre is one of the most widely used statistical descriptors for probability distributions on Riemannian manifolds. At present, existing algorithms are able to compute the Riemannian barycentre of a probability distribution, only if i.i.d. samples of this distribution are readily available. However, there are many cases where i.i.d. samples are quite difficult to obtain, and have to be replaced with non-independent samples, generated by a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. To overcome this difficulty, the present paper proposes a new Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for com…
