The Hamiltonian theory for the collective longitudinally polarized colorless gluon excitations (plasmons) and for collective quark-antiquark excitations with abnormal relation between chirality and helicity (plasminos) in a high-temperature quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is developed. For this purpose, Zakharov's forma\-lism for constructing the wave theory in nonlinear media with dispersion is used. A generalization of the Poisson superbracket involving both commuting and anticommuting variables to the case of a continuous medium is performed and the corresponding Hamilton equations are presented. The canonical transformations including simultaneously both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom of the collective excitations in QGP are discussed and a complete system of the canonicity conditions for these transformations is written out. An explicit form of the effective fourth-order Hamiltonians describing the elastic scattering of plasmino off plasmino and plasmino off plasmon is found and the Boltzmann type kinetic equations describing the processes of elastic scattering are obtained. A detailed comparison of the effective amplitudes defined within the (pseudo)classical Hamiltonian theory, with the corresponding matrix elements calcu\-la\-ted early in the framework of high-temperature quantum chromodynamics in the so-called hard thermal loop approximation is performed. This enables one to obtain, in particular, an explicit form of the vertex and coefficient functions in the effective amplitudes and in the canonical transformations, correspondingly, and also to define the validity of a purely pseudoclassical approach in the Hamiltonian description of the dynamics of a quark-gluon plasma. The problem of determining the higher-order coefficient functions in the canonical transformations of fermionic and bosonic normal variables is considered.
The act of implementing non-Abelian duality in two dimensional sigma models results unavoidably in an additional reducible symmetry. The Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism is employed to handle this new symmetry. Valuable lessons are learnt here with respect to non-Abelian duality. We emphasise, in particular, the effects of the ghost sector corresponding to this symmetry on non-Abelian duality.
The collective coordinates expansion of the Skyrme soliton particle model gives rise to the second class constraints. We use the non-abelian BFFT formalism to convert this system into the one with only first class constraints. Choosing two different structure functions of the non-abelian algebra, we obtain simplified algebraic expressions for the first class non-abelian Hamiltonians. This result shows that the non-abelian BFFT method is, in many aspects, richer than the abelian BFFT formalism. For both of the first class Hamiltonians, we derive the Lagrangians which lead to the new theory. Whe…
We make use of the properties of product integrals to obtain a surface product integral representation for the Wilson loop operator. The result can be interpreted as the non-abelian version of Stokes' theorem.
We make a systematic development of the non-Abelian formulation of two-form gauge fields with topological coupling with the Yang-Mills one-form connection. An analysis of the gauge structure, reducibility conditions and physical degrees of freedom is presented. We employ the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism to quantize the resulting theory.
It is argued that the massive non-Abelian gauge field theory without involving Higgs bosons may be well established on the basis of gauge-invariance principle because the dynamics of the field is gauge-invariant in the physical space defined by the Lorentz constraint condition. The quantization of the field can readily be performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism and leads to a quantum theory which shows good renormalizability and unitarity.
In this work we have shown that it is possible to construct non-Abelian field theories employing, in a systematic way, the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism. This approach follows two steps. In the first step, the original Abelian fields are modified in order to introduce the non-Abelian algebra. After that, the Faddeev-Jackiw method is implemented and the gauge symmetry relative to some non-Abelian symmetry group, is introduced through the zero-mode of the symplectic matrix. We construct the SU(2) and SU(2)xU(1) Yang-Mills theories having as starting point the U(1) Maxwell electromagnetic t…
We propose a variant scheme of the Gauge Unfixing formalism which modifies directly the original phase space variables of a constrained system. These new variables are gauge invariant quantities. We apply our procedure in a mixed constrained system that is the Abelian Pure Chern Simons Theory where several gains are obtained. In particular, from the gauge invariant Hamiltonian and using the inverse Legendre transformation, we obtain the same initial Abelian Pure Chern Simons Lagrangian as the gauge invariant Lagrangian. This result shows that the gauge symmetry of the action is certainly prese…
In this Thesis we present a comprehensive study of perturbative and non-perturbative non-Abelian gauge theories in the light of gauge-fixing procedures, focusing our attention on the BRST formalism in Yang-Mills theory. We propose first a model to re-write the Faddeev-Popov quantisation method in terms of group-theoretical techniques and then we give a possible way to solve the no-go theorem of Neuberger for lattice Yang-Mills theory with double BRST symmetry. In the final part we present a study of the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantisation method for non-linear gauges in non-Abelian gauge theories.
We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory within the framework of geometrical superfield formalism. We obtain the (anti-) BRST invariant coupled Lagrangian densities that respect the above nilpotent symmetry transformations. We discuss, furthermore, this (anti-) BRST invariance in the language of the superfield formalism. One of the novel features of our investigation is the observation that, in addition to the horizontality condition, we have to invoke…
We investigate the connection between Abelian bosonization in the Minkowski and Euclidean formalisms. The relation is best seen in the complex time formalism of S. A. Fulling and S. N. M. Ruijsenaars \cite{fulling}.
We derive the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for {\it all} the fields of a free Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting the geometrical superfield approach to BRST formalism. The above four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) theory is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parameterized by the four even spacetime variables x^μ(with μ= 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of odd Grassmannian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). One of the salient features of our present investigation is that the above nilpotent (anti-)…
We demonstrate that the nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry invariance of the Lagrangian density of a four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory with Dirac fields can be captured within the framework of the superfield approach to BRST formalism. The above 4D theory, where there is an explicit coupling between the non-Abelian 1-form gauge field and the Dirac fields, is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold, parameterized by the bosonic 4D space-time variables and a pair of Grassmannian variables. We show that the Grassmannian independe…
The concept of gauge invariance can be considered one of the most subtle and useful concept in theoretical physics since it can permit the comprehension of difficult systems in physics with an arbitrary choice of a reference frame at every instant of time. It is always desirable to have a bridge between gauge invariant and noninvariant theories. Once established, this kind of mapping between first-class (gauge invariant) and second-class systems, in Dirac's formalism can be considered as a sort of duality. In this paper we investigate this "duality" obtaining a gauge invariant theory starting …
In this paper we analyze two higher-derivative theories, the generalized electrodynamics and the Alekseev-Arbuzov-Baikov's effective Lagrangian from the point of view of Faddeev-Jackiw sympletic approach. It is shown that the full set of constraint is obtained directly from the zero-mode eigenvectors, and that they are in accordance with known results from Dirac's theory, a remnant and recurrent issue in the literature. The method shows to be rather economical in relation to the Dirac's one, obviating thus unnecessary classification and calculations. Afterwards, to conclude we construct the tr…
Using a new technique for the extraction of leading-log energy dependence from the non-Abelian portion of quark-line interactions, hadronic scattering amplitudes may be represented in terms of functional integrals over gluonic material exchanged between scattering quarks. If that material is further represented by a condensed tube of gluonic flux (obtained by dimensional transmutation), these functional integrals will produce effective propagators corresponding to plasma oscillations, or ``condensons'', in this condensed gluonic material. These condensons yield a non-zero, non-tachyonic, finit…
We present a new (variant) formulation of N=1 supersymmetric compensator mechanism for an arbitrary non-Abelian group in four dimensions. We call this `variant supersymmetric non-Abelian Proca-Stueckelberg formalism'. Our field content is economical, consisting only of the two multiplets: (i) A Non-Abelian vector multiplet (A_μ^I, λ^I, C_{μνρ}{}^I) and (ii) A compensator tensor multiplet (B_{μν}{}^I, χ^I, φ^I). The index I is for the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian gauge group. The C_{μνρ}{}^I is originally an auxiliary field Hodge-dual to the conventional auxiliary field D^I. The φ^I …
The $Δ$-operator of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism is the Hamiltonian BRST charge of Abelian shift transformations in the ghost momentum representation. We generalize this $Δ$-operator, and its associated hierarchy of antibrackets, to that of an arbitrary non-Abelian and possibly open algebra of any rank. We comment on the possible application of this formalism to closed string field theory.
In this paper we reformulate Abelian and non-Abelian noninvariant systems as gauge invariant theories using a new constraint conversion scheme, developed on the symplectic framework. This conversion method is not plagued by the ambiguity problem that torments the BFFT and iterative methods and also it seems more powerful since it does not require special modifications to handle with non-Abelian systems.
Non-Abelian strings are considered in {\em non}-supersymmetric theories with fermions in various appropriate representations of the gauge group U($N$). We derive the electric charge quantization conditions and the index theorems counting fermion zero modes in the string background both for the left-handed and right-handed fermions. In both cases, we observe a non-trivial $N$ dependence.
Fermionic zero modes around non-abelian vortices are shown that they constitute two $N=2$, $d=1$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics algebras. These two algebras can be combined under certain circumstances to form a central charge extended $N=4$ supersymmetric quantum algebra. We thoroughly discuss the implications of the existence of supersymmetric quantum mechanics algebras, in the quantum Hilbert space of the fermionic zero modes.
We generalize the standard product integral formalism to incorporate Grassmann valued matrices and show that the resulting supersymmetric product integrals provide a natural framework for describing supersymmetric Wilson Lines and Wilson Loops. We use this formalism to establish the supersymmetric version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem.
The Thomas-Fermi screening of non-Abelian gauge fields by fermions or screening of gluon fields in quark matter is discussed. It is described by an effective mass term which is, as with hard thermal loops, related to the eikonal for a Chern-Simons theory and the Wess-Zumino-Witten action.
We discuss a D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of Bonora-Tonin's superfield formalism and derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for this theory. To pay our homage to Victor I. Ogievetsky (1928-1996), who was one of the inventors of Abelian 2-form (antisymmetric tensor) gauge field, we go a step further and discuss the above D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of BRST formalism and establish that the existence of the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Fe…
We examine non-abelian duality transformations in the open string case. After gauging the isometries of the target space and developing the general formalism, we study in details the duals oftarget spaces with SO(N) isometries which, for the SO(2) case, reduces to the known abelian T-duals. We apply the formalism to electrically and magnetically charged 4D black hole solutions and, as in the abelian case, dual coordinates satisfy Dirichlet conditions.
We consider fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors. The spectral function of the fermions exhibits several interesting features such as support in displaced Dirac cones and an asymmetric distribution of normal modes. These features are compared to similar ones observed in angle resolved photoemission experiments on high T_c superconductors. Along the way we elucidate some properties of p-wave superconductors in AdS_4 and discuss the construction of SO(4) superconductors.
We study the trace and chiral anomalies of Weyl fermions in a non-abelian gauge background in four dimensions. Using a Pauli-Villars regularization we identify the trace anomaly, proving that it can be cast in a gauge invariant form, even in the presence of the non-abelian chiral anomaly, that we rederive to check the consistency of our methods. In particular, we find that the trace anomaly does not contain any parity-odd topological contribution, whose presence has been debated in the recent literature.
In the framework of superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, the derivation of the (anti-)BRST nilpotent symmetries for the matter fields, present in any arbitrary interacting gauge theory, has been a long-standing problem. In our present investigation, the local, covariant, continuous and off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the Dirac fields $(ψ, \barψ)$ are derived in the framework of the augmented superfield formulation where the four $(3 + 1)$-dimensional (4D) interacting non-Abelian gauge theory is considered on the six $(4 + 2)$-dimension…
Field transformation rules of the standard fermionic T-duality require fermionic isometries to anticommute, which leads to complexification of the Killing spinors and results in complex valued dual backgrounds. We generalize the field transformations to the setting with non-anticommuting fermionic isometries and show that the resulting backgrounds are solutions of double field theory. Explicit examples of non-abelian fermionic T-dualities that produce real backgrounds are given. Some of our examples can be bosonic T-dualized into usual supergravity solutions, while the others are genuinely non…
We start by describing two of the main proposals for duality in Abelian gauge theories, namely $F$(ield strength)-duality approach and the $S$% -duality formalism. We then discuss how $F$-duality and $S$-duality can be applied to the case of linearized gravity. By emphasizing the similarities and differences between these two type of dualities we explore the possibility of combining them in just one duality formalism.
We apply the well-established techniques of geometrical superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism in the context of four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting its inherent "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations and derive the corresponding off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting BRST and anti-BRST symmetry transformations. Our approach leads to the derivation of three (anti-) BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restrictions that are found to be responsible for the absolute anticommutativity of the BRST…
An arbitrary dimensional expression is given for the anomalous dimension of the fermion field in a model with a four point interaction and a $U(1)$ gauge field, at $O(1/N^2)$ within a large flavour expansion in the Landau gauge.
In this paper we study the Nielsen identity for the supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model in the superfield formalism, in three spacetime dimensions. The Nielsen identity is essential to understand the gauge invariance of the symmetry breaking mechanism, and it is calculated by using the BRST invariance of the model. We discuss the technical difficulties in applying this identity to the complete effective superpotential, but we show how we can study in detail the gauge independence of one part of the effective superpotential, $K_{eff}$. We calculate the renormalization group functions of th…
The new method based on the operator formalism proposed by Abe and Nakanishi is applied to the quantum nonlinear abelian gauge theory in two dimension. The soluble models in this method are extended to wider class of quantum field theories. We obtain the exact solution in the canonical-quantization operator formalism in the Heisenberg picture. So this analysis might shed some light on the analysis of gravitational theory and non-polynomial field theories.
Recently the construction of the non-abelian effective D-brane action was performed through order $α'{}^3$ including the terms quadratic in the gauginos. This result can be tested by calculating the spectrum in the presence of constant magnetic background fields and comparing it to the string theoretic predictions. This test was already performed for the purely bosonic terms. In this note we extend the test to the fermionic terms. We obtain perfect agreement.
Contour gauges are discussed in the framework of canonical formalism. We find flux operator algebras with the structure constants of underlying Yang-Mills theory.
The celebrated Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions are invoked to obtain the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-) BRST as well as (anti-) co-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of the Lagrangian description of the physical four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We show that the above CF type conditions, which turn out to be the secondary constraints of the theory, remain invariant with respect to the time-evolution of the above 2-form gauge system in the Hamiltonian formulation. This time-evolution invariance (i) physically ensures the …
We consider Abelian tensor hierarchy in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in the conformal superspace formalism, where the so-called covariant approach is used to antisymmetric tensor fields. We introduce $p$-form gauge superfields as superforms in the conformal superspace. We solve the Bianchi identities under the constraints for the superforms. As a result, each of form fields is expressed by a single gauge invariant superfield. The action of superforms is shown with the invariant superfields. We also show the relation between the superspace formalism and the superconformal tensor c…
We formulate the Josephson effect in a field theoretic language which affords a straightforward generalization to the non-abelian case. We give some examples and apply the formalism to the case of SO(5) superconductivity.
We discuss bosonization in three dimensions of an $SU(N)$ massive Thirring model in the low-energy regime. We find that the bosonized theory is related (but not equal) to $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons gauge theory. For free massive fermions bosonization leads, at low energies, to the pure $SU(N)$ (level $k=1$) Chern-Simons theory.
In this paper, we propose a generalization of an improved gauge unfixing formalism in order to generate gauge symmetries in the non-Abelian valued systems. This generalization displays a proper and formal reformulation of second-class systems within the phase space itself. We then present our formalism in a manifestly gauge invariant resolution of the $SU(N)$ massive Yang-Mills and $SU(2)$ Skyrme models where gauge invariant variables are derived allowing then the achievement of Dirac brackets, gauge invariant Hamiltonians and first-class Lagrangians.
The Lorentz-covariant quantization performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism for massless non-Abelian gauge fields has been achieved. In this quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a constraint, must be introduced initially and incorporated into the Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange undetermined multiplier method. In this way, it is found that all Lorentz components of a vector potential have thier corresponding conjugate canonical variables. This fact allows us to define Lorentz-invariant poisson brackets and carry out the quantization in a Lorent-covariant manner. Key words: …
The quantum Yang-Mills theory describing dual ($\tilde g$) and non-dual ($g$) charges and revealing the generalized duality symmetry was developed by analogy with the Zwanziger formalism in QED.
We discuss non-Abelian bosonization of two and three dimensional fermions using a path-integral framework in which the bosonic action follows from the evaluation of the fermion determinant for the Dirac operator in the presence of a vector field. This naturally leads to the Wess-Zumino-Witten action for massless two-dimensional fermions and to a Chern-Simons action for very massive three dimensional fermions. One advantage of our approach is that it allows to derive the exact bosonization recipe for fermion currents in a systematic way.
Defining chiral lattice gauge theories in the Ginsparg-Wilson formalism is complicated by the so-called fermion measure problem. It has been proven for the abelian theories that smooth well-behaved fermion measure exists if and only if the anomaly-free condition is granted, and the same was shown to hold in perturbative theories for non-abelian gauge groups, but the non-perturbative proof is absent. In this paper, we consider a simpler problem in 2-d and present a proof for the existence of smooth and gauge invariant fermion measure on the gauge field configuration space with zero field streng…
We present the newly improved Batalin-Fradkin-Tyutin (BFT) Hamiltonian formalism and the generalization to the Lagrangian formulation, which provide the much more simple and transparent insight to the usual BFT method, with application to the non-Abelian Proca model which has been an difficult problem in the usual BFT method. The infinite terms of the effectively first class constraints can be made to be the regular power series forms by ingenious choice of $X_{αβ}$ and $ω^{αβ}$-matrices. In this new method, the first class Hamiltonian, which also needs infinite correction terms is obtained si…
We systematically apply the formalism of duality walls to study the action of duality transformations on boundary conditions and local and nonlocal operators in two, three, and four-dimensional free field theories. In particular, we construct a large class of D-branes for two-dimensional sigma-models with toroidal targets and determine the action of the T-duality group on it. It is manifest in this formalism that T-duality transformations on D-branes are given by a differential-geometric version of the Fourier-Mukai transform.
The massive non-Abelian gauge fields are quantized Lorentz-covariantly in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism. In the quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a necessary constraint, is introduced initially and incorporated into the massive Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange multiplier method so as to make each temporal component of a vector potential to have a canonically conjugate counterpart. The result of this quantization is confirmed by the quantization performed in the Lagrangian path-integral formalism by applying the Lagrange multiplier method which is shown to be equivalent to …
We develop a BRST symmetric gaugeon formalism for the Abelian rank-2 antisymmetric tensor field in the Lorentz breaking framework. The Lorentz breaking is achieved here by considering a proper subgroup of Lorentz group together with translation. In this scenario, the gaugeon fields together with the standard fields of the Abelian rank-2 antisymmetric tensor theory get mass. In order to develop the gaugeon formulation for this theory in VSR, we first introduce a set of dipole vector fields as a quantum gauge freedom to the action. In order to quantize the dipole vector fields, the VSR-modified …
We capture the off-shell as well as the on-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry invariance of the Lagrangian densities of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) (non-)Abelian 1-form gauge theories within the framework of the superfield formalism. In particular, we provide the geometrical interpretations for (i) the above nilpotent symmetry invariance, and (ii) the above Lagrangian densities, in the language of the specific quantities defined in the domain of the above superfield formalism. Some of the subtle points, connected with the 4D (non-)Abelian 1-form gauge…
Classical BRST invariance in the pure spinor formalism for the open superstring is shown to imply the supersymmetric Born-Infeld equations of motion for the background fields. These equations are obtained by requiring that the left and right-moving BRST currents are equal on the worldsheet boundary in the presence of the background. The Born-Infeld equations are expressed in N=1 D=10 superspace and include all abelian contributions to the low-energy equations of motion, as well as the leading non-abelian contributions.
The rules for the free fermionic string model construction are extended to include general non-abelian orbifold constructions that go beyond the real fermionic approach. This generalization is also applied to the asymmetric orbifold rules recently introduced. These non-abelian orbifold rules are quite easy to use. Examples are given to illustrate their applications.
By considering the fermionic realization of $G/H$ coset models, we show that the partition function for the $U(1)/U(1)$ model defines a Topological Quantum Field Theory and coincides with that for a 2-dimensional Abelian BF system. In the non-Abelian case, we prove the topological character of $G/G$ coset models by explicit computation, also finding a natural extension of 2-dimensional BF systems with non-Abelian symmetry.
We prove that abelian Yang-Baxter deformations of superstring coset sigma models are equivalent to sequences of commuting TsT transformations, meaning T dualities and coordinate shifts. Our results extend also to fermionic deformations and fermionic T duality, and naturally lead to a TsT subgroup of the superduality group OSp(d_b,d_b|2d_f). In cases like AdS_5 x S^5, fermionic deformations necessarily lead to complex models. As an illustration of inequivalent deformations, we give all six abelian deformations of AdS_3. We comment on the possible dual field theory interpretation of these (super…
One of the methods used to extend two-dimensional bosonization to four space-time dimensions involves a transformation to new spatial variables so that only one of them appears kinematically. The problem is then reduced to an Abelian version of two-dimensional bosonization with extra ``internal'' coordinates. On a formal level, putting these internal coordinates on a finite lattice seems to provide a well-defined prescription for calculating correlation functions. However, in the infinite-lattice or continuum limits, certain difficulties appear that require very delicate specification of all o…
A manifestly Lorentz invariant effective action for Yang-Mills theory depending only on commuting fields is constructed. This action posesses a bosonic symmetry, which plays a role analogous to the BRST symmetry in the standard formalism.
Our recent method to calculate renormalized functional determinants, the partial wave cutoff method, is extended for the evaluation of 4-D fermion one-loop effective action with arbitrary mass in certain types of radially symmetric, non-Abelian, background gauge fields (including instanton-like and instanton-antiinstanton-like configurations). A detailed study on functional determinants for matrix-valued radial differential operators is presented, explicating both our analytic treatment on the high partial wave contribution and the application of the generalized Gel'fand-Yaglom formula to dete…
We consider an abelian holonomy operator in two-dimensional conformal field theory with zero-mode contributions. The analysis is made possible by use of a geometric-quantization scheme for abelian Chern-Simons theory on $S^1 \times S^1 \times {\bf R}$. We find that a purely zero-mode part of the holonomy operator can be expressed in terms of Riemann's zeta function. We also show that a generalization of linking numbers can be obtained in terms of the vacuum expectation values of the zero-mode holonomy operators. Inspired by mathematical analogies between linking numbers and Legendre symbols, w…
