We study the trace and chiral anomalies of Weyl fermions in a non-abelian gauge background in four dimensions. Using a Pauli-Villars regularization we identify the trace anomaly, proving that it can be cast in a gauge invariant form, even in the presence of the non-abelian chiral anomaly, that we rederive to check the consistency of our methods. In particular, we find that the trace anomaly does not contain any parity-odd topological contribution, whose presence has been debated in the recent literature.
Using the formulation for N=2 conformal supergravity in SU(2) superspace, we define super-Weyl (or superconformal) anomalies and construct two types of nonlocal effective actions that generate these anomalies. We also present the local Wess-Zumino action for spontaneously broken N=2 superconformal symmetry, with the Goldstone supermultiplet identified with a reduced chiral superfield containing the dilaton and the axion among its components.
Anomalies of N = (4,4) superconformal field theories coupled to a conformal supergravity background in two dimensions are computed by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We find that Weyl, axial gauge and super Weyl transformations are anomalous, while general coordinate, local Lorentz, vector gauge and local super transformations are not. The coefficients of the anomalies show that the superconformal field theories have the central charge expected in the AdS/CFT correspondence.
Conformally invariant massless field systems involving only dimensionless parameters are known to describe particle physics at very high energy. In the presence of an external gravitational field, the conformal symmetry may generalize to Weyl invariance. However, the latter symmetry no longer survives after quantization: A Weyl anomaly appears. In this Letter, a purely algebraic understanding of the universal structure of the Weyl anomalies is presented. The results hold in arbitrary dimensions and independently of any regularization scheme.
We consider two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to matter in the temporal gauge, using the Polyakov path integral. We show that the integration over the metric can be explicitly performed under some plausible assumptions. We also discuss that the critical dimensions in string theory may not be determined in the temporal gauge.
The computation of anomalies in quantum field theory may be carried out by evaluating path integral Jacobians, as first shown by Fujikawa. The evaluation of these Jacobians can be cast in the form of a quantum mechanical problem, whose solution has a path integral representation. For the case of Weyl anomalies, also called trace anomalies, one is immediately led to study the path integral for a particle moving in curved spaces. We analyze the latter in a manifestly covariant way and by making use of ghost fields. The introduction of the ghost fields allows us to represent the path integral mea…
We identify the supersymmetric extension of Weyl transformations in various types of supergravities, the minimal, nonminimal and new minimal N=1 SUGRA in 4D, formulated in terms of superfields. Based also on previous results we conclude that there are only two types of trace anomalies in nonminimal and new minimal supergravities, which correspond to the two nontrivial cocycles of the minimal supergravity and, when reduced to component form, to the well-known squared Weyl density and Euler density. There are nevertheless in new minimal supergravity other nontrivial cocycles which, however, are …
Starting from the Wess-Zumino action associated to the super Weyl anomaly, we determine the local counterterm which allows to pass from this anomaly to the chirally split superdiffeomorphism anomaly (as defined on a compact super Riemann surface without boundary). The counterterm involves the graded extension of the Verlinde functional and the results can be applied to the study of holomorphic factorization of partition functions in superconformal field theory.
We derive anomaly constraints for Abelian and non-Abelian discrete symmetries using the path integral approach. We survey anomalies of discrete symmetries in heterotic orbifolds and find a new relation between such anomalies and the so-called `anomalous' U(1).
On the basis of the Weyl equations of congruent transference, we consider a possible influence of the Weyl non-Abelian gauge field defining the transference on the precession of a gyroscope. Plane-wave solutions to the equations of the non-Abelian gauge field are derived.
The general structure of trace anomaly, suggested recently by Deser and Shwimmer, is argued to be the consequence of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition. The response of partition function on a finite Weyl transformation, which is connected with the cocycles of the Weyl group in $d=2k$ dimensions is considered, and explicit answers for $d=4,6$ are obtained. Particularly, it is shown, that addition of the special combination of the local counterterms leads to the simple form of that cocycle, quadratic over Weyl field $σ$, i.e. the form, similar to the two-dimensional Lioville action. This for…
The method of minimal geometric deformation (MGD) is used to derive static, strongly gravitating, spherically symmetric, compact stellar distributions. The trace and Weyl anomalies are then employed to probe the MGD in the holographic setup, as a realistic model, playing a prominent role in AdS/CFT.
Using the relation between diffeomorphisms in the bulk and Weyl transformations on the boundary we study the Weyl transformation properties of the bulk metric on shell and of the boundary action. We obtain a universal formula for one of the classes of trace anomalies in any even dimension in terms of the parameters of the gravity action.
The general solutions of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition for the conformal (or Weyl, or trace) anomalies are derived. The solutions are obtained, in arbitrary dimensions, by explicitly computing the cohomology of the corresponding Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin differential in the space of integrated local functions at ghost number unity. This provides a purely algebraic, regularization-independent classification of the Weyl anomalies in arbitrary dimensions. The so-called type-A anomaly is shown to satisfy a non-trivial descent of equations, similarly to the non-Abelian chiral anomaly in Yan…
This is a review of some elementary properties of Dirac, Weyl and Majorana spinors in 4d. We focus in particular on the differences between massless Dirac and Majorana fermions, on one side, and Weyl fermions, on the other. We review in detail the definition of their effective actions, when coupled to (vector and axial) gauge fields, and revisit the corresponding anomalies using the Feynman diagram method with different regularizations. Among various well known results we stress in particular the regularization independence in perturbative approaches, while not all the regularizations fit the …
We extend a previous analysis on the derivation of the dilaton Wess-Zumino (WZ) action in $d=4$, based on the method of Weyl gauging, to $6$ dimensions. As in the previous case, we discuss the structure of the same action in dimensional regularization using 6-dimensional Weyl invariants, extracting the dilaton interactions in the most general scheme, with the inclusion of the local anomaly terms. As an application, we present the WZ action for the (2,0) tensor multiplet, which has been investigated in the past in the context of the $AdS_7/CFT_6$ holographic anomaly matching. We then extend to …
The generalization of scale invariance when gravitational effects are considered is Weyl invariance, namely, invariance under (global or local) rescalings of the metric. In this work, we discuss in some details the implications of the fact that the value of the anomaly for the global Weyl invariant coupling of scalar fields to gravity is sensitive to the dynamics (or absence thereof) of the gravitational field.
Considering arbitrary conformal field theories in general (non-conformally flat) backgrounds, we adopt a dimensional regularization approach to obtain stress tensors from Weyl anomalies. The results of type A anomaly-induced stress tensors in four and six-dimensions generalize the previous results calculated in a conformally flat background. On the other hand, regulators are needed to have well-defined type B anomaly-induced stress tensors. We also discuss ambiguities related to type D anomalies, Weyl invariants and order of limit issues.
The gauged WZNW model has been derived as an effective action, whose Poisson bracket algebra of the constraints is isomorphic to the commutator algebra of operators in quantized fermionic theory. As a consequence, the hamiltonian as well as usual lagrangian non-abelian bosonization rules have been obtained, for the chiral currents and for the chiral densities. The expression for the anomaly has been obtained as a function of the Schwinger term, using canonical methods.
Using the recently discovered N=1 supersymmetric extension of the conformal fourth-order scalar operator (introduced originally by Fradkin and Tseytlin and also known as the "Paneitz operator" or "Riegert operator"), we derive a new representation for the nonlocal action generating the super-Weyl anomalies.
We use the anomaly cancellation of the M-theory fivebrane to derive the R-symmetry anomalies of the $A_{N}$ $(0,2)$ tensor-multiplet theories. This result leads to a simple derivation of black hole entropy in $d=4, \mathcal{N}=2$ compactifications of $M$-theory. We also show how the formalism of normal bundle anomaly cancellation clarifies the Kaluza-Klein origin of Chern-Simons terms in gauged supergravity theories. The results imply the existence of interesting 1/N corrections in the AdS/CFT correspondence.
We systematically analyze the effective action on the moduli space of (2,0) superconformal field theories in six dimensions, as well as their toroidal compactification to maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in five and four dimensions. We present a streamlined approach to non-renormalization theorems that constrain this effective action. The first several orders in its derivative expansion are determined by a one-loop calculation in five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. This fixes the leading higher-derivative operators that describe the renormalization group flow into theories residing…
Nonlocal regularization of QED is shown to possess an axial anomaly of the same form as other regularization schemes. The Noether current is explicitly constructed and the symmetries are shown to be violated, whereas the identities constructed when one properly considers the contribution from the path integral measure are respected. We also discuss the barrier to quantizing the fully gauged chiral invariant theory, and consequences.
The holographic Weyl anomaly associated to Chern-Simons gravity in 2n+1 dimensions is proportional to the Euler term in 2n dimensions, with no contributions from the Weyl tensor. We compute the holographic energy-momentum tensor associated to Chern-Simons gravity directly from the action, in an arbitrary odd-dimensional spacetime. We show, in particular, that the counterterms rendering the action finite contain only terms of the Lovelock type.
Conformally invariant quantum field theories develop trace anomalies when defined on curved backgrounds. We study again the problem of identifying all possible trace anomalies in d=6 by studying the consistency conditions to derive their 10 independent solutions. It is known that only 4 of these solutions represent true anomalies, classified as one type A anomaly, given by the topological Euler density, and three type B anomalies, made up by three independent Weyl invariants. However, we also present the explicit expressions of the remaining 6 trivial anomalies, namely those that can be obtain…
Using a cohomological characterization of the consistent and the covariant Lorentz and gauge anomalies, derived from the complexification of the relevant algebras, we study in $d=2$ the definition of the Weyl determinant for a non-abelian theory with Riemannian background. We obtain two second order operators that produce, by means of $ζ$-function regularization, respectively the consistent and the covariant Lorentz and gauge anomalies, preserving diffeomorphism invariance. We compute exactly their functional determinants and the W-Z-W terms: the ``consistent'' determinant agrees with the non-…
We study the consequences of unbroken rigid supersymmetry of four-dimensional field theories placed on curved manifolds. We show that in Lorentzian signature the background vector field coupling to the R-current is determined by the Weyl tensor of the background metric. In Euclidean signature, the same holds if two supercharges of opposite R-charge are preserved, otherwise the (anti-)self-dual part of the vector field-strength is fixed by the Weyl tensor. As a result of this relation, the trace and R-current anomalies of superconformal field theories simplify, with the trace anomaly becoming p…
We study the definition of trace anomalies for models of Dirac and Weyl fermions coupled to a metric and a gauge potential. While in the non-perturbative case the trace anomaly is the response of the effective action to a Weyl transformation, the definition in a perturbative approach is more involved. In the latter case we use a specific formula proposed by M.Duff, of which we present a physical interpretation. The main body of the paper consists in deriving trace anomalies with the above formula and comparing them with the corresponding non-perturbative results. We show that they coincide and…
The Weyl anomaly in the Holographic Renormalisation Group as implemented using Hamilton-Jacobi language is studied in detail. We investigate the breakdown of the descent equations in order to isolate the Weyl anomaly of the dual field theory close to the (UV) fixed point. We use the freedom of adding finite terms to the renormalised effective action in order to bring the anomalies in the expected form. We comment on different ways of describing the bare and renormalised schemes, and on possible interpretations of the descent equations as describing the renormalisation group flow non-perturbati…
We show that the Pauli-Villars regularized action for a scalar field in a gravitational background in 1+1 dimensions has, for any value of the cutoff M, a symmetry which involves non-local transformations of the regulator field plus (local) Weyl transformations of the metric tensor. These transformations, an extension to the regularized action of the usual Weyl symmetry transformations of the classical action, lead to a new interpretation of the conformal anomaly in terms of the (non-anomalous) Jacobian for this symmetry. Moreover, the Jacobian is automatically regularized, and yields the corr…
Using the Weyl transfomations induced by diffeomorphisms we set up a cohomological problem for the Fefferman-Graham coefficients. The cohomologically nontrivial solutions remove the ambiguity and give the nonlocal terms in the effective action responsible for the trace anomalies.
We show how to calculate the effective potential of SU(3) QCD which tells that the true minimum is given by the monopole condensation. To do this we make the gauge independent Weyl symmetric Abelian decomposition of the SU(3) QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and the colored chromons. In the perturbative regime this decomposes the Feynman diagram in such a way that the conservation of color is explicit. Moreover, this shows the existence of two gluon jets, the neuron jet and chromon jet, which can be verified by experiment. In the non-perturbative regime, the decompo…
Based on the supersymmetric quantum mechanical approach, we have systematically studied both the $U\left(1\right)$ gauge anomaly and the diffeomorphism anomaly in Weyl systems with torsion, curvature and external electromagnetic fields. These anomalies relate to the chiral current (or current) non-conservation and chiral energy-momentum (or energy-momentum) non-conservation, respectively, which can be applied to the $^{3}\text{He-A}$ phase, the chiral superconductors and the Weyl semimetals with dislocations and disclinations. In sharp difference with other anomalies, there exist torsional ano…
Being motivated by applications to the physics of Weyl semimetals we study spectral geometry of Dirac operator with an abelian gauge field and an axial vector field. We impose chiral bag boundary conditions with variable chiral phase $θ$ on the fermions. We establish main properties of the spectral functions which ensure applicability of the $ζ$ function regularization and of the usual heat kernel formulae for chiral and parity anomalies. We develop computational methods, including a perturbation expansion for the heat kernel. We show that the terms in both anomalies which include electromagne…
We calculate the trace and axial anomalies of $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ superconformal theories with exactly marginal deformations, on a surface with boundary. Extending recent work by Gomis et al, we derive the boundary contribution that captures the anomalous scale dependence of the one-point functions of exactly marginal operators. Integration of the bulk super-Weyl anomaly shows that the sphere partition function computes the Kähler potential $K(λ, \barλ)$ on the superconformal manifold. Likewise, our results confirm the conjecture that the partition function on the supersymmetric hemisphere com…
We compute completely the BRST--antibracket cohomology on local functionals in two-dimensional Weyl invariant gravity for given classical field content (two dimensional metric and scalar matter fields) and gauge symmetries (two dimensional diffeomorphisms and local Weyl transformations). This covers the determination of all classical actions, of all their rigid symmetries, of all background charges and of all candidate gauge anomalies. In particular we show that the antifield dependence can be entirely removed from the anomalies and that, if the target space has isometries, the condition for t…
We determine the two--dimensional Weyl, Lorentz and $κ$--anomalies in the $D=10$ Green--Schwarz heterotic string sigma--model, in an $SO(1,9)$-Lorentz covariant background gauge, and prove their cancellation.
We consider theories with gauged chiral fermions in which there are abelian anomalies, and no nonabelian anomalies (but there may be nonabelian gauge fields present). We construct an associated theory that is gauge invariant, renormalizable, and with the same particle content, by adding a finite number of terms to the action. Alternatively one can view the new theory as arising from the original theory by using another regularization, one that is gauge invariant. The situation is reminiscent of the mechanism of adding Fadeev-Popov ghosts to an unsatisfactory gauge theory, to arrive at the usua…
Operators transform anomalously under the symmetry in the presence of quantum anomalies. We study this aspect of the super-Weyl anomaly in $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs), in the context of AdS/CFT. In particular, we carry out holographic renormalization for $(1,1)$ pure AdS$_3$ supergravity that is supposed to be a gravity dual of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT, and derive holographic superconformal Ward identities with corresponding anomalies. We show that the obtained super-Weyl anomaly of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT induces a quantum correction term in the transformat…
We propose a classical action for the motion of massless Weyl fermions in a background gauge field in (2N+1)+1 spacetime dimensions. We use this action to derive the collisionless Boltzmann equation for a gas of such particles, and show how classical versions of the gauge and Abelian chiral anomalies arise from the Chern character of the non-Abelian Berry connection that parallel transports the spin degree of freedom in momentum space.
Based on the extended BRST formalism of Batalin, Fradkin and Vilkovisky, we perform a general algebraic analysis of the BRST anomalies in superstring theory of Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond. Consistency conditions on the BRST anomalies are completely solved. The genuine super-Virasoro anomaly is identified with the essentially unique solution to the consistency condition without any reference to a particular gauge for the 2D supergravity fields. In a configuration space where metric and gravitino fields are properly constructed, general form of the super-Weyl anomaly is obtained from the super-Virasoro…
The gravitational anomalies in two dimensions, specifically the Einstein anomaly and the Weyl anomaly, are fully determined by means of dispersion relations. In this approach the anomalies originate from the peculiar infrared feature of the imaginary part of the relevant formfactor which approaches a $δ$-function singularity at zero momentum squared when $m \to 0$.
Starting from an anomaly-free Abelian Higgs model coupled to gravity in a 6-dimensional space-time we construct an effective four-dimensional theory of charged fermions interacting with U(1) Abelian gauge field and gravity, both localised near the core of a Nielsen-Olesen vortex configuration. We show that an anomaly free theory in 6-dimensions can give rise to an anomalous theory in D=4, which suggests a possibility of consistent regularisation of abelian anomalous chiral gauge theories in four dimensions. We also show that the spectrum of charged bulk fermions has a mass gap.
We show that the Implicit Regularization Technique is useful to display quantum symmetry breaking in a complete regularization independent fashion. Arbitrary parameters are expressed by finite differences between integrals of the same superficial degree of divergence whose value is fixed on physical grounds (symmetry requirements or phenomenology). We study Weyl fermions on a classical gravitational background in two dimensions and show that, assuming Lorentz symmetry, the Weyl and Einstein Ward identities reduce to a set of algebraic equations for the arbitrary parameters which allows us to s…
We give a complete geometric description of conformal anomalies in arbitrary, (necessarily even) dimension. They fall into two distinct classes: the first, based on Weyl invariants that vanish at integer dimensions, arises from finite -- and hence scale-free -- contributions to the effective gravitational action through a mechanism analogous to that of the (gauge field) chiral anomaly. Like the latter, it is unique and proportional to a topological term, the Euler density of the dimension, thereby preserving scale invariance. The contributions of the second class, requiring introduction of a s…
Irrelevant operators in a CFT modify the usual Weyl transformation of the metric. A metric beta-function turns on, which modifies the Weyl anomalies as well. In this paper, we study the relation between bulk diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformation at the boundary when a massive scalar field, which sources irrelevant operators at the boundary, is coupled to the bulk metric. Considering the effect of the backreaction generated by the scalar field, we provide a holographic description of the boundary metric beta-function and anomalies. Our results represent an additional test of the AdS/CFT corre…
Motivated by questions about quantum information and classification of quantum field theories, we consider Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in spacetime dimension $d\geq 5$ with a conformally-invariant spatial boundary (BCFTs) or $4$-dimensional conformal defect (DCFTs). We determine the boundary or defect contribution to the Weyl anomaly using the standard algorithm, which includes imposing Wess-Zumino consistency and fixing finite counterterms. These boundary/defect contributions are built from the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, as well as the pullback of the ambient CFT's Weyl tensor. F…
We consider the gauge invariance of the standard Yang-Mills model in the framework of the causal approach of Epstein-Glaser and Scharf and determine the generic form of the anomalies. The method used is based Epstein-Glaser approach to renormalization theory. In the case of quantum electrodynamics we obtain quite easily the absence of anomalies in all orders.
We determine the general structure of quantum anomalies for the $R$-multiplet of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories in the presence of background fields for an arbitrary number of Abelian flavor multiplets. By solving the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions for off-shell new minimal supergravity in four dimensions with an arbitrary number of Abelian vector multiplets, we compute the anomaly in the conservation of the supercurrent to leading non trivial order in the gravitino and vector multiplet fermions. We find that both $R$-symmetry and flavor anomalies ne…
One of the more popular objections towards shape dynamics is the suspicion that anomalies in the spatial Weyl symmetry will arise upon quantization. The purpose of this short paper is to establish the tools required for an investigation of the sort of anomalies that can possibly arise. The first step is to adapt to our setting Barnich and Henneaux's formulation of gauge cohomology in the Hamiltonian setting, which serve to decompose the anomaly into a spatial component and time component. The spatial part of the anomaly, i.e. the anomaly in the symmetry algebra itself ($[Ω, Ω]\propto \hbar$ in…
We consider a Dirac fermion in a metric-axial-tensor (MAT) background. By regulating it with Pauli-Villars fields we analyze and compute its full anomaly structure. Appropriate limits of the MAT background allows to recover the anomalies of Dirac and Weyl fermions in the usual curved spacetime, obtaining in particular the trace anomaly of a chiral fermion, which has been the object of recent analyses.
In a previous paper we introduced two linear spinor equations equivalent to the Lorentz Force and stated that these equations were fairly general and could be applied to any force field compatible with Special Relativity. In this paper, via a lagrangian approach, we explore this possibility and obtain classical spinor equations describing the behaviour of fermionic particles not only under an electromagnetic field but also under Yang-Mills and Color fields. We find a covariant derivative defined {\it along the classical trajectory} of the particle, which can be extended to SU(2) and SU(3) loca…
This article deals with two main topics. One is odd parity trace anomalies in Weyl fermion theories in a 4d curved background, the second is the introduction of axial gravity. The motivation for reconsidering the former is to clarify the theoretical background underlying the approach and complete the calculation of the anomaly. The reference is in particular to the difference between Weyl and massless Majorana fermions and to the possible contributions from tadpole and seagull terms in the Feynman diagram approach. A first, basic, result of this paper is that a more thorough treatment, taking …
