The purpose of this paper is to give an easy to understand with step-by-step explanation to allow interested people to fully appreciate the power of natural deduction for first-order logic. Natural deduction as a proof system can be used to prove various statements in propositional logic, but we will see its extension to cover quantifiers which gives it more power over propositional logic in solving more complex, real-world problems. We started by going over logical connectives and quantifiers to agree on the symbols that will be used throughout the paper, as some authors use different symbols to refer to the same thing. Besides, we showed the inference rules that are used the most. Furthermore, we presented the soundness and completeness of natural deduction for first-order logic. Finally, we solved examples ranging from easy to complex to give you different circumstances in which you can apply the proof system to solve problems you may encounter. Hopefully, this paper will be helpful makes the subject easy to understand.
The logic of constant domains is intuitionistic logic extended with the so-called forall-shift axiom, a classically valid statement which implies the excluded middle over decidable formulas. Surprisingly, this logic is constructive and so far this has been proved by cut-elimination for ad-hoc sequent calculi. Here we use the methods of natural deduction and Curry-Howard correspondence to provide a simple computational interpretation of the logic.
Intuitionistic first-order logic extended with a restricted form of Markov's principle is constructive and admits a Curry-Howard correspondence, as shown by Herbelin. We provide a simpler proof of that result and then we study intuitionistic first-order logic extended with unrestricted Markov's principle. Starting from classical natural deduction, we restrict the excluded middle and we obtain a natural deduction system and a parallel Curry-Howard isomorphism for the logic. We show that proof terms for existentially quantified formulas reduce to a list of individual terms representing all possi…
This paper presents a way of formalising definite descriptions with a binary quantifier $ι$, where $ιx[F, G]$ is read as `The $F$ is $G$'. Introduction and elimination rules for $ι$ in a system of intuitionist negative free logic are formulated. Procedures for removing maximal formulas of the form $ιx[F, G]$ are given, and it is shown that deductions in the system can be brought into normal form.
Filinski constructed a symmetric lambda-calculus consisting of expressions and continuations which are symmetric, and functions which have duality. In his calculus, functions can be encoded to expressions and continuations using primitive operators. That is, the duality of functions is not derived in the calculus but adopted as a principle of the calculus. In this paper, we propose a simple symmetric lambda-calculus corresponding to the negation-free natural deduction based bilateralism in proof-theoretic semantics. In our calculus, continuation types are represented as not negations of formul…
The Curry-Howard correspondence is often described as relating proofs (in intutionistic natural deduction) to programs (terms in simply-typed lambda calculus). However this narrative is hardly a perfect fit, due to the computational content of cut-elimination and the logical origins of lambda calculus. We revisit Howard's work and interpret it as an isomorphism between a category of proofs in intuitionistic sequent calculus and a category of terms in simply-typed lambda calculus. In our telling of the story the fundamental duality is not between proofs and programs but between local (sequent c…
This paper introduces a natural deduction calculus for intuitionistic logic of belief $\mathsf{IEL}^{-}$ which is easily turned into a modal $λ$-calculus giving a computational semantics for deductions in $\mathsf{IEL}^{-}$. By using that interpretation, it is also proved that $\mathsf{IEL}^{-}$ has good proof-theoretic properties. The correspondence between deductions and typed terms is then extended to a categorical semantics for identity of proofs in $\mathsf{IEL}^{-}$ showing the general structure of such a modality for belief in an intuitionistic framework.
In a previously published ENTCS paper (Santos et al. (2016)), we introduced a sequent calculus called $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ for Minimal Implicational Propositional Logic ($\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$). This calculus provides a proof search procedure for $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ that works in a bottom-up approach. We proved there that $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ is sound and complete. We also suggested a strategy to guarantee termination of the proof search procedure. In this current paper, we refined this strategy and presented a new strategy for $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ termin…
Classical (or Boolean) type theory is the type theory that allows the type inference $σ\to \bot) \to \bot => σ$ (the type counterpart of double-negation elimination), where $σ$ is any type and $\bot$ is absurdity type. This paper first presents a denotational semantics for a simplified version of Parigot's lambda-mu calculus, a premier example of classical type theory. In this semantics the domain of each type is divided into infinitely many ranks and contains not only the usual members of the type at rank 0 but also their negative, conjunctive, and disjunctive shadows in the higher ranks, whi…
We extend to natural deduction the approach of Linear Nested Sequents and of 2-sequents. Formulas are decorated with a spatial coordinate, which allows a formulation of formal systems in the original spirit of natural deduction -- only one introduction and one elimination rule per connective, no additional (structural) rule, no explicit reference to the accessibility relation of the intended Kripke models. We give systems for the normal modal logics from K to S4. For the intuitionistic versions of the systems, we define proof reduction, and prove proof normalization, thus obtaining a syntactic…
Propositional Gödel logic extends intuitionistic logic with the non-constructive principle of linearity $A\rightarrow B\ \lor\ B\rightarrow A$. We introduce a Curry-Howard correspondence for this logic and show that a particularly simple natural deduction calculus can be used as a typing system. The resulting functional language enriches the simply typed lambda calculus with a synchronous communication mechanism between parallel processes. Our normalization proof employs original termination arguments and sophisticated proof transformations with a meaningful computational reading. Our results …
Dummett's logic LC is intuitionistic logic extended with Dummett's axiom: for every two statements the first implies the second or the second implies the first. We present a natural deduction and a Curry-Howard correspondence for first-order and second-order Dummett's logic. We add to the lambda calculus an operator which represents, from the viewpoint of programming, a mechanism for representing parallel computations and communication between them, and from the viewpoint of logic, Dummett's axiom. We prove that our typed calculus is normalizing and show that proof terms for existentially quan…
Natural deduction systems, as proposed by Gentzen and further studied by Prawitz, is one of the most well known proof-theoretical frameworks. Part of its success is based on the fact that natural deduction rules present a simple characterization of logical constants, especially in the case of intuitionistic logic. However, there has been a lot of criticism on extensions of the intuitionistic set of rules in order to deal with classical logic. Indeed, most of such extensions add, to the usual introduction and elimination rules, extra rules governing negation. As a consequence, several meta-logi…
This paper studies a formalisation of intuitionistic logic by Negri and von Plato which has general introduction and elimination rules. The philosophical importance of the system is expounded. Definitions of `maximal formula', `segment' and `maximal segment' suitable to the system are formulated and corresponding reduction procedures for maximal formulas and permutative reduction procedures for maximal segments given. Alternatives to the main method used are also considered. It is shown that deductions in the system convert into normal form and that deductions in normal form have the subformul…
In a previous paper (of which this is a prosecution) we investigated the extraction of proof-theoretic properties of natural deduction derivations from their impredicative translation into System F. Our key idea was to introduce an extended equational theory for System F codifying at a syntactic level some properties found in parametric models. In a recent series of papers a different approach to extract proof-theoretic properties of natural deduction derivations was proposed by defining predicative variants of the usual translation, embedding intuitionistic propositional logic into the atomic…
In this project, a rather complete proof-theoretical formalization of Lambek Calculus (non-associative with arbitrary extensions) has been ported from Coq proof assistent to HOL4 theorem prover, with some improvements and new theorems. Three deduction systems (Syntactic Calculus, Natural Deduction and Sequent Calculus) of Lambek Calculus are defined with many related theorems proved. The equivalance between these systems are formally proved. Finally, a formalization of Sequent Calculus proofs (where Coq has built-in supports) has been designed and implemented in HOL4. Some basic results includ…
We present the Natural Deduction Assistant (NaDeA) and discuss its advantages and disadvantages as a tool for teaching logic. NaDeA is available online and is based on a formalization of natural deduction in the Isabelle proof assistant. We first provide concise formulations of the main formalization results. We then elaborate on the prerequisites for NaDeA, in particular we describe a formalization in Isabelle of "Hilbert's Axioms" that we use as a starting point in our bachelor course on mathematical logic. We discuss a recent evaluation of NaDeA and also give an overview of the exercises in…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a bi-intuitionistic sequent calculus and to give proofs of admissibility for its structural rules. The calculus I will present, called SC2Int, is a sequent calculus for the bi-intuitionistic logic 2Int. Calculi for this logic represent a kind of bilateralist reasoning, since they do not only internalize processes of verification or provability but also the dual processes in terms of falsification or what is called dual provability. A normal form theorem for a natural deduction calculus of 2Int has already been stated, in this paper I want to prove a cu…
Proofs (sequent calculus, natural deduction) and imperative algorithms (pseudocodes) are two well-known coexisting concepts. Then what is their relationship? Our answer is that \[ imperative\ algorithms\ =\ proofs\ with\ cuts \] This observation leads to a generalization to pseudocodes which we call {\it logical pseudocodes}. It is similar to natural deduction proof of computability logic\cite{Jap03,Jap08}. Each statement in it corresponds to a proof step in natural deduction. Therefore, the merit over pseudocode is that each statement is guaranteed to be correct and safe with respect to the i…
This paper positively solves an open problem if it is possible to provide a Hilbert system to Epistemic Logic of Friendship (EFL) by Seligman, Girard and Liu. To find a Hilbert system, we first introduce a sound, complete and cut-free tree (or nested) sequent calculus for EFL, which is an integrated combination of Seligman's sequent calculus for basic hybrid logic and a tree sequent calculus for modal logic. Then we translate a tree sequent into an ordinary formula to specify a Hilbert system of EFL and finally show that our Hilbert system is sound and complete for the intended two-dimensional…
Inclusion logic is a variant of dependence logic that was shown to have the same expressive power as positive greatest fixed-point logic. Inclusion logic is not axiomatizable in full, but its first-order consequences can be axiomatized. In this paper, we provide such an explicit partial axiomatization by introducing a system of natural deduction for inclusion logic that is sound and complete for first-order consequences in inclusion logic.
This paper provides an overview of common challenges in teaching of logic and formal methods to Computer Science and IT students. We discuss our experiences from the course IN3050: Applied Logic in Engineering, introduced as a "logic for everybody" elective course at at TU Munich, Germany, to engage pupils studying Computer Science, IT and engineering subjects on Bachelor and Master levels. Our goal was to overcome the bias that logic and formal methods are not only very complicated but also very boring to study and to apply. In this paper, we present the core structure of the course, provide …

We introduce translations between display calculus proofs and labeled calculus proofs in the context of tense logics. First, we show that every derivation in the display calculus for the minimal tense logic Kt extended with general path axioms can be effectively transformed into a derivation in the corresponding labeled calculus. Concerning the converse translation, we show that for Kt extended with path axioms, every derivation in the corresponding labeled calculus can be put into a special form that is translatable to a derivation in the associated display calculus. A key insight in this con…
This paper investigates first-order game logic and first-order modal mu-calculus, which extend their propositional modal logic counterparts with first-order modalities of interpreted effects such as variable assignments. Unlike in the propositional case, both logics are shown to have the same expressive power and their proof calculi to have the same deductive power. Both calculi are also mutually relatively complete. In the presence of differential equations, corollaries obtain usable and complete translations between differential game logic, a logic for the deductive verification of hybrid ga…
This paper defines the (first-order) conflict resolution calculus: an extension of the resolution calculus inspired by techniques used in modern SAT-solvers. The resolution inference is restricted to (first-order) unit-propagation and the calculus is extended with a mechanism for assuming decision literals and a new inference rule for clause learning, which is a first-order generalization of the propositional conflict-driven clause learning (CDCL) procedure. The calculus is sound (because it can be simulated by natural deduction) and refutationally complete (because it can simulate resolution)…
Software artifacts are ubiquitous in our lives being an essential part of home appliances, cars, cel phones, and even in more critical activities like aeronautics and health sciences. In this context software failures may produce enormous losses, either economical or, in the extreme, in human lives. Software analysis is an area in software engineering concerned on the application of different techniques in order to prove the (relative) absence of errors in software artifacts. In many cases these methods of analysis are applied by following certain methodological directives that ensure better r…
