Let $PU_n$ the projective unitary group of rank $n$ and $BPU_n$ its classifying space. For an odd prime $p$, we extend previous results to a compete description of $H^s(BPU_n;\mathbb{Z})_{(p)}$ for $s<2p+5$ by showing that the $p$-primary subgroups of $H^s(BPU_n;\mathbb{Z})$ are trivial for $s = 2p+3$ and $s = 2p+4$.
For an odd prime $p$, we study the image of the Thom map from Brown-Peterson cohomology of $BPU_n$ to the ordinary cohomology in dimensions $0\leq i\leq 2p+2$, where $BPU_n$ is the classifying space of the projective unitary group $PU_n$. Also we show that a family of well understood $p$-torsion cohomology classes $y_{p,k}\in H^{2p^{k+1}+2}(BPU_n;Z_{(p)})$ are in the image of the Thom map.
We study the mod p cohomology of the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p). We first proof that old conjectures due to J.F. Adams, and Kono and Yagita about the structure of the mod p cohomology of classifying space of connected compact Lie groups held in the case of PU(p). Finally, we proof that the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p) is determined by its mod p cohomology as an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra for p>3, completing previous works for the cases p=2,3.
For cohomology theories closely related to Morava E-theory, we provide an algebro-geometric interpretation of the cohomology of groups that arise as centralizers of tuples of commuting elements inside of symmetric groups. The interpretation is given in terms of the connected components of the scheme that classifies subgroup schemes of a particular p-divisible group.
Attributed to J F Adams is the conjecture that, at odd primes, the mod-p cohomology ring of the classifying space of a connected compact Lie group is detected by its elementary abelian p-subgroups. In this note we rely on Toda's calculation of H^*(BF_4;F_3) in order to show that the conjecture holds in case of the exceptional Lie group F_4. To this aim we use invariant theory in order to identify parts of H^*(BF_4;F_3) with invariant subrings in the cohomology of elementary abelian 3-subgroups of F_4. These subgroups themselves are identified via the Steenrod algebra action on H^*(BF_4;F_3).
In this paper, we compute the rational cohomology groups of the classifying space of a simply connected Kac-Moody group of infinite type. The fundamental principle is "from finite to infinite". That is, for a Kac-Moody group G(A) of infinite type, the input data for computation are the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of parabolic subgroups of G(A)(which are of finite type), and the homomorphisms induced by inclusions of these subgroups. In some special cases, we can further determine the cohomology rings. Our method also applies to study the mod p cohomology of the classifying spaces…
We use buildings and group extensions to compute lower bounds on the top Betti numbers for the cohomology of the level p congruence subgroups of SL(3,Z) and Sp(4,Z).
We study the Duflot filtration on the Borel equivariant cohomology of smooth manifolds with a smooth $p$-torus action. We axiomatize the filtration and prove analog of several structural results about equivariant cohomology rings in this setting. We apply this abstract theory to study the $\mathbb{F}_p$ cohomology rings of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups, and show how to recover geometric results about the cohomology of $BG$ using equivariant cohomology. This includes some results about detection on subgroups and restrictions on associated primes that were previously only known for fi…
By recent work on some conjectures of Pillay, each definably compact group in a saturated o-minimal structure is an expansion of a compact Lie group by a torsion free normal divisible subgroup, called its infinitesimal subgroup. We show that the infinitesimal subgroup is cohomologically acyclic. This implies that the functorial correspondence between definably compact groups and Lie groups preserves the cohomology.
The Torelli group of $W_g = \#^g S^n \times S^n$ is the subgroup of the diffeomorphisms of $W_g$ fixing a disc which act trivially on $H_n(W_g;Z)$. The rational cohomology groups of the Torelli group are representations of an arithmetic subgroup of $Sp_{2g}(Z)$ or $O_{g,g}(Z)$. In this paper we prove that for $2n \geq 6$ and $g \geq 2$, they are in fact algebraic representations. Combined with previous work, this determines the rational cohomology of the Torelli group in a stable range. We further prove that the classifying space of the Torelli group is nilpotent.
In this paper we compute the mod 2 cohomology of the Sylow 2-subgroup of the Higman-Sims group HS, one of the 26 sporadic simple groups. We obtain its Poincare series as well as an explicit description of it as a ring with 17 generators and 79 relations
Gromov and Ivanov established an analogue of Leray's theorem on cohomology of contractible covers for bounded cohomology of amenable covers. We present an alternative proof of this fact, using classifying spaces of families of subgroups.
We determine the integral cohomology rings of an infinite family of p-groups, for odd primes p, with cyclic derived subgroups. Our method involves embedding the groups in a compact Lie group of dimension one, and was suggested by P H Kropholler and J Huebschmann.

For a compact Lie group G we show that if the representing spectrum for Borel cohomology generates its category of modules if G is connected. For a closed subgroup H of G we consider the map C^*(BG)--->C^*(BH) and establish the sense in which it is relatively Gorenstein. Throughout, we pay careful attention to the importance of connectedness of the groups.
The main purpose of this article is to give the integral cohomology of classical principal congruence subgroups in SL(2,Z) as well as their analogues in the third braid group with local coefficients in symmetric powers of the natural symplectic representation. The resulting answers (1) correspond to certain modular forms in characteristic zero, and (2) the cohomology of certain spaces in homotopy theory in characteristic p. The torsion is given in terms of the structure of a "p-divided power algebra". The work is an extension of the work in arXiv:1204.5390v1 as well as extensions of a classica…
The category of rational G-equivariant cohomology theories for a compact Lie group $G$ is the homotopy category of rational G-spectra and therefore tensor-triangulated. We show that its Balmer spectrum is the set of conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of $G$, with the topology corresponding to the topological poset introduced in the author's study of rational Mackey functors. This is used to classify the collections of subgroups arising as the geometric isotropy of finite $G$-spectra. The ingredients for this classification are (i) the algebraic model of free spectra of the author and B.Ship…
We establish a weak form of Carlson's conjecture on the depth of the mod-p cohomology ring of a p-group. In particular, Duflot's lower bound for the depth is tight if and only if the cohomology ring is not detected on a certain family of subgroups. The proofs use the structure of the cohomology ring as a comodule over the cohomology of the centre via the multiplication map. We demonstrate the existence of systems of parameters (so-called polarised systems) which are particularly well adapted to this comodule structure.
We express the rational cohomology of the unordered configuration space of a compact oriented manifold as a representation of its mapping class group in terms of a weight-decomposition of the rational cohomology of the mapping space from the manifold to a sphere. We apply this to the case of a compact oriented surface with one boundary component and explicitly compute the rational cohomology of its unordered configuration space as a representation of its mapping class group. In particular, this representation is not symplectic, but has trivial action of the second Johnson filtration subgroup o…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $\cF$ be a family of subgroups of $G$ closed under conjugation and taking subgroups. We consider the question whether there exists a periodic relative $\cF$-projective resolution for $\bbZ$ when $\cF$ is the family of all subgroups $H \leq G$ with $\rk H \leq \rk G-1$. We answer this question negatively by calculating the relative group cohomology $\cF H^* (G, \bbF_2)$ where $G=\bbZ/2\times \bbZ /2$ and $\cF$ is the family of cyclic subgroups of $G$. To do this calculation we first observe that the relative group cohomology $\cF H^*(G, M)$ can be calculated using …
Let $G$ be a Lie group and $H$ be a subgroup of it. We can construct a bisimplicial manifold $NG(*) \rtimes NH(*)$ and the de Rham complex $Ω^*(NG(*) \rtimes NH(*))$ on it. This complex is a triple complex and the cohomology of its total complex is isomorphic to $H^*(B(G \rtimes H))$. In this paper, we show that the total complex of the double complex $Ω^q(NG(*) \rtimes NH(*))$ is isomorphic to the continuous cohomology $H_c^*(G \rtimes H;S^q{\mathcal G}^* \otimes S^q{\mathcal H}^*)$ for any fixed $q$.
We obtain vanishing ranges for the mod $p$ cohomology of alternating subgroups of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups. Here a Coxeter group $W$ is $p$-free if the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every pair of Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$. Our result generalizes those for alternating groups formerly proved by Kleshchev-Nakano and Burichenko. As a byproduct, we obtain vanishing ranges for the twisted cohomology of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups with coefficients in the sign representations. In addition, a weak version of the main result is proved for a certain class of infinite Coxet…
We describe the cohomology ring $H^*(J_2;\mathbb{F}_3)$ both as subring of $H^*(3^{1+2}_+;\mathbb{F}_3)$ and with an abstract presentation. We also give its Poincaré series. We use as tool a spectral sequence for the strongly closed $3$-subgroup of $J_2$. This method might be used to compute the cohomology of any finite simple group with a strongly closed $p$-subgroup.
We prove a representation stability result for the codimension-one cohomology of the level three congruence subgroup of $\mathbf{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a special case of a question of Church-Farb-Putman which we make more precise. Our methods involve proving several finiteness properties of the Steinberg module for the group $\mathbf{SL}_n(K)$ for $K$ a field. This also lets us give a new proof of Ash-Putman-Sam's homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module. We also prove an integral refinement of Church-Putman's homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module for the gr…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring that is free of rank $k$ as an abelian group, $p$ a prime, and $SL(n,R)$ the special linear group. We show that the Lie algebra associated to the filtration of $SL(n,R)$ by $p$-congruence subgroups is isomorphic to the tensor product $\mathfrak{sl}_n(R\otimes_{\Z}\Z/p)\otimes_{\F_p}t\F_p[t]$, the Lie algebra of polynomials with zero constant term and coefficients $n\times n$ traceless matrices with entries polynomials in $k$ variables over $\F_p$. We use the Lie algebra structure along with the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence to compute the $d^2$ homolog…
For any reductive group $G$ and a parabolic subgroup $P$ with its Levi subgroup $L$, the first author [Ku2] introduced a ring homomorphism $ ξ^P_λ: Rep^\mathbb{C}_{λ-poly}(L) \to H^*(G/P, \mathbb{C})$, where $ Rep^\mathbb{C}_{λ-poly}(L)$ is a certain subring of the complexified representation ring of $L$ (depending upon the choice of an irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of $G$ with highest weight $λ$). In this paper we study this homomorphism for $G=SO(2n)$ and its maximal parabolic subgroups $P_{n-k}$ for any $2\leq k\leq n-1$ (with the choice of $V(λ) $ to be the defining representation $V(ω…
Henn, Lannes, and Schwartz have introduced two invariants, d_0(G) and d_1(G), of the mod p cohomology of a finite group G such that H^*(G) is detected and determined by H^d(C_G(V)) for d no bigger than d_0(G) and d_1(G), with V < G p-elementary abelian. We study how to calculate these invariants. We define a number e(G) that measures the image of the restriction of H^*(G) to its maximal central p-elementary abelian subgroup. Using Benson--Carlson duality, we show that when $G$ has a p-central Sylow subgroup P, d_0(G) = d_0(P) = e(P), and a similar exact formula holds for d_1(G). In general, we…
For any reductive group G and a parabolic subgroup P with its Levi subgroup L, the first author in [Ku2] introduced a ring homomorphism $ ξ^P_λ: Rep^\mathbb{C}_{λ-poly}(L) \to H^*(G/P, \mathbb{C})$, where $ Rep^\mathbb{C}_{λ-poly}(L)$ is a certain subring of the complexified representation ring of L (depending upon the choice of an irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of G with highest weight $λ$). In this paper we study this homomorphism for G=Sp(2n) and its maximal parabolic subgroups $P_{n-k}$ for any $1\leq k\leq n$ (with the choice of $V(λ) $ to be the defining representation $V(ω_1) $ in $\…
Let G be the Sylow 2-subgroup of the unitary group $SU_3(4)$. We find two essential classes in the mod-2 cohomology ring of G whose product is nonzero. In fact, the product is the ``last survivor'' of Benson-Carlson duality. Recent work of Pakianathan and Yalcin then implies a result about connected graphs with an action of G. Also, there exist essential classes which cannot be written as sums of transfers from proper subgroups. This phenomenon was first observed on the computer. The argument given here uses the elegant calculation by J. Clark, with minor corrections.
The first author conjectured certain relations for Morita-Mumford classes and Newton classes in the integral cohomology of mapping class groups (integral Riemann-Roch formulae). In this paper, the conjecture is verified for cyclic subgroups of mapping class groups.
In a previous paper, the author (together with Matthew Emerton) proved that the completed cohomology groups of SL_N(Z) are stable in fixed degree as N goes to infinity (Z may be replaced by the ring O_F of integers of any number field). In this paper, we relate these completed cohomology groups to K-theory and Galois cohomology. Various consequences include showing that Borel's stable classes become infinitely p-divisible up the p-congruence tower if and only if a certain p-adic zeta value is non-zero. We use our results to compute H_2(Gamma_N(p),F_p) (for sufficiently large N) where Gamma_N(p…
We study the higher derived functors of the inverse limit of a functor F: D --> Z_{(p)}-mod, where D is one of the standard categories which arise when studying the homotopy theory of the classifying space of a finite group G, e.g., the orbit category or the Quillen category of G. These higher limits are of importance e.g., for the study of maps between classifying spaces as well as for group cohomology. We show that these higher limits can be identified with the G-equivariant Bredon cohomology of the subgroup complex of p-subgroups in G (i.e., the nerve of the poset of p-subgroups in G) with …
Let $Γ_n(p)$ be the level-$p$ principal congruence subgroup of $\text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. Borel-Serre proved that the cohomology of $Γ_n(p)$ vanishes above degree $\binom{n}{2}$. We study the cohomology in this top degree $\binom{n}{2}$. Let $\mathcal{T}_n(\mathbb{Q})$ denote the Tits building of $\text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Q})$. Lee-Szczarba conjectured that $H^{\binom{n}{2}}(Γ_n(p))$ is isomorphic to $\widetilde{H}_{n-2}(\mathcal{T}_n(\mathbb{Q})/Γ_n(p))$ and proved that this holds for $p=3$. We partially prove and partially disprove this conjecture by showing that a natural map $H^{\binom{n}{2}}(Γ…
Let $\mathbb{F}_{Θ}=G/P_{Θ}$ be a flag manifold associated to a non-compact real simple Lie group $G$ and the parabolic subgroup $% P_{Θ}$. This is a closed subgroup of $G$ determined by a subset $% Θ$ of simple restricted roots of $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. This paper computes the second de Rham cohomology group of $\mathbb{F}_Θ$. We prove that it zero in general, with some rare exceptions. When it is non-zero, we give a basis of $H^2(\mathbb{F}_Θ,\mathbb{R})$ through the Weil construction of closed 2-forms as characteristic classes of principal fiber bundles. The starting point is the computatio…
There exist spaces BSol(q) which are the classifying spaces of a family of 2-local finite groups based on certain fusion system over the Sylow 2-subgroups of Spin_7(q). In this paper we calculate the cohomology of BSol(q) as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra A_2. We also provide the calculation of the cohomology algebra over A_2 of the finite group of Lie type G_2(q).
In this paper, we compute the integral cohomology groups for all examples of Calabi-Yau 3-folds obtained from hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. Among 473 800 776 families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds $X$ corresponding to 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes there exist exactly 32 families having non-trivial torsion in $H^*(X, \Z)$. We came to an interesting observation that the torsion subgroups in $H^2$ and $H^3$ are exchanged by the mirror symmetry involution, i.e. the torsion subgroup in the Picard group of $X$ is isomorphic to the Brauer group of the mirror $X^*$
We study vanishing results for L2-cohomology of countable groups under the presence of subgroups that satisfy some weak normality condition. As a consequence we show that the L2-Betti numbers of SL(n,R) for any infinite integral domain R vanish below degree n-1. We also give a uniform proof for the vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of Thompson's groups F and T.
In this paper, we describe a connection that exists among (a) the number of singular points along the trajectory of Toda flow, (b) the cohomology of a compact subgroup $K$, and (c) the number of points of a Chevalley group $K({\mathbb F}_q)$ related to $K$ over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$. The Toda lattice is defined for a real split semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, and $K$ is a maximal compact Lie subgroup of $G$ associated to $\mathfrak g$. Relations are also obtained between the singularities of the Toda flow and the integral cohomology of the real flag manifold $G/B$ with $B$ the B…
Let E be the extraspecial p-group of order p^3 and exponent p where p is an odd prime. We consider the mod p cohomology of summands in the stable splitting of p-completed classifying space BE. Moreover, we consider the stable splitting for some finite groups with Sylow p-subgroup E.
