Anisotropy in electronic structures may ignite intriguing anisotropic optical responses, as has been well demonstrated in various systems including superconductors, semiconductors, and even topological Weyl semimetals. Meanwhile, it is well established in metal optics that the metal reflectance declines from one to zero when the photon frequency is above the plasma frequency ωp , behaving as a plasma mirror. However, the exploration of anisotropic plasma mirrors and corresponding applications remains elusive, especially at room temperature. Here, we discover a pronounced anisotropic plasma reflectance edge in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2, with an anisotropy ratio of ωp up to 1.5. Such anisotropic plasma mirror behavior and its robustness against temperature promise optical device applications over a wide temperature range. For example, the high sensitivity of polarization-resolved plasma reflectance edge renders WP2 an inherent polarization detector. We further achieve a room-temperature WP2-based optical switch, effectively controlled by simply tuning the light polarization. These findings extend the frontiers of metal optics as a discipline and promise the design of multifunctional devices combining both topological and optical features.
The conventional k.p method fails to capture the full and essential physics of many symmetry enriched multiple nodal line structures in the three dimensional Brillouin zone. Here we present a new and systematical method to construct the effective lattice model of mirror symmetry protected three-dimensional multiple nodal line semimetals, when the spin-orbit interaction is ignored. For systems with a given pair of perpendicular nodal rings, we obtain all the effective lattice models and eleven inequivalent nodal line Fermi surfaces together with their related constraints. By means of first-prin…
Young and Kane have given a great insight for 2D Dirac semimetals with nontrivial topology in the presence of nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry. Based on one of 2D nonsymmorphic square lattice structures they proposed, we further construct a set of 3D minimal tight-binding models via vertically stacking the 2D nonsymmorphic lattice. Specifically, our model provides a platform to generate three topologically semimetallic phases such as Dirac nodal line semimetals, Weyl nodal line semimetals and Weyl semimetals. The off-centered mirror symmetry sufficiently protects nodal lines emerging within …
We propose a simple scheme to construct a model whose Fermi surface is comprised of crossing-line nodes. The Hamiltonian consists of a normal hopping term and an additional term which is odd under the mirror reflection. The line nodes appear along the mirror-invariant planes, where each line node carries the quantized Berry magnetic flux. We explicitly construct a model with the $N$-fold rotational symmetry, where the $2N$ line nodes merge at the north and south poles. Photoirradiation induces a topological phase transition. When we apply photoirradiation along the $k_z$ axis, there emerge poi…
This study reports the magnetization switching induced by spin-orbit torque (SOT) from the spin current generated in Co2MnGa magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) thin films. We deposited epitaxial Co2MnGa thin films with highly B2-ordered structure on MgO(001) substrates. The SOT was characterized by harmonic Hall measurements in a Co2MnGa/Ti/CoFeB heterostructure and a relatively large spin Hall efficiency of -7.8% was obtained. The SOT-induced magnetization switching of the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer was further demonstrated using the structure. The symmetry of second harmonic signals, t…
By utilizing symmetry analysis and electronic structure calculations, we investigated the low-temperature orthorhombic phase of Ag$_{2}$Se in ${\cal SG}$~17. In addition to the discovery of a nodal plane at $k_{z}=π$ protected by the joint operation of time-reversal (${\cal T}$) and the 2-fold screw rotation $S_{2z}$, we found 24 Weyl points mainly residing at the $k_{y}=0$ plane with notable Fermi arc and large quasiparticle interference pattern (QPI). Due to the absence of mirror symmetry, a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality reside at different binding energies, which makes this sy…
Based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we propose that a transition metal rutile oxide, in particular $β'$-PtO$_2$, can host a three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal phase. We find that $β'$-PtO$_2$ possesses a linked nodal rings structure when spin-orbit coupling is neglected. Incorporating spin-orbit coupling gaps the nodal rings, while preserving a single pair of three-dimensional Dirac points protected by a screw rotation symmetry. This Dirac point is created by a band inversion of two $d$ bands, which is a realization of a DSM phase in correlated electron sys…
We have studied theoretically the Weyl semimetals the point symmetry group of which has reflection planes and which contain equivalent valleys with opposite chiralities. These include the most frequently studied compounds, namely the transition metals monopnictides TaAs, NbAs, TaP, NbP, and also Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ alloys. The circular photogalvanic current, which inverts its direction under reversal of the light circular polarization, has been calculated for the light absorption under direct optical transitions near the Weyl points. In the studied materials, the total contribution of all the val…
Band-crossings occurring on a mirror plane are compelled to form a nodal loop in the momentum space without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the presence of other equivalent mirror planes, multiple such nodal loops can combine to form interesting nodal-link structures. Here, based on first-principles calculations and an effective $\mathbf{k.p}$ model analysis, we show that CaAuAs hosts a unique starfruit-like nodal-link structure in the bulk electronic dispersion in the absence of SOC. This nodal-link is comprised of three nodal loops, which cross each other at the time-reversal-invariant momentu…
Topological materials with both insulating and semimetal phases can be protected by crystalline (e.g. mirror) symmetry. The insulating phase, called topological crystalline insulator (TCI), has been intensively investigated and observed in three-dimensional materials. However, the predicted two-dimensional (2D) materials with TCI phase are explored much less than 3D TCIs and 2D topological insulator, while so far considered 2D TCIs almost exclusively possess a square lattice structure with the mirror Chern number $\mathcal C_{M} =-2$. Here, we predict theoretically that hexagonal monolayer of …
We propose that the topological semimetal features can co-exist with ferromagnetic ground state in vanadium-phosphorous-oxide $β$-V$_2$OPO$_4$ compound from first-principles calculations. In this magnetic system with inversion symmetry, the direction of magnetization is able to manipulate the symmetric protected band structures from a node-line type to a Weyl one in the presence of spin-orbital-coupling. The node-line semimetal phase is protected by the mirror symmetry with the reflection-invariant plane perpendicular to magnetic order. Within mirror symmetry breaking due to the magnetization …
Tuning and stabilising topological states, such as Weyl semimetals, Dirac semimetals, or topological insulators, is emerging as one of the major topics in materials science. Periodic driving of many-body systems offers a platform to design Floquet states of matter with tunable electronic properties on ultrafast time scales. Here we show by first principles calculations how femtosecond laser pulses with circularly polarised light can be used to switch between Weyl semimetal, Dirac semimetal, and topological insulator states in a prototypical 3D Dirac material, Na$_3$Bi. Our findings are general…
Based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that the WC-type HfC, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), can host a three-dimensional nodal chain semimetal state. Distinguished from the previous material IrF4 [T. Bzdusek et al., Nature 538, 75 (2016)], the nodal chain here is protected by mirror reflection symmetries of a simple space group, while in IrF4 the nonsymmorphic space group with a glide plane is a necessity. Moreover, in the presence of SOC, the nodal chain in WC type HfC evolves into Weyl points. In the Brillouin zone, a total of 30 pairs o…
Weyl semimetals are a new member of the topological materials family, featuring a pair of singly degenerate Weyl cones with linear dispersion around the nodes in the bulk, and Fermi arcs on the surface. Depending on whether the system conserves or violates Lorentz symmetry, Weyl semimetals can be categorized into two classes. Photoemission spectroscopy measurements have confirmed the TaAs-class and WTe2-class of Weyl semimetals as type-I and type-II respectively. This review article aims to elucidate and elaborate on the basic concepts of Weyl semimetals and quasiparticle interference experime…
WloopPHI is a Python code that expands the features of WIEN2k, a full-potential all-electron density functional theory package, by the characterization of Weyl semimetals. It enables the calculation of the chirality (or "monopole charge") associated with Weyl nodes and nodal lines. The theoretical methodology for the calculation of the chirality is based on an extended Wilson loop method and a Berry phase approach. We validate the code using TaAs, which is a well-characterized Weyl semimetal, both theoretically and experimentally. Afterwards, we applied the method to the characterization of YR…
Using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we show that ferromagnetic Heusler compounds Co$_2$MnX (X= Si, Ge, Sn) present non-trivial topological characteristics and belong to the category of Weyl semimetals. These materials exhibit two topologically interesting band crossings near the Fermi level. These band crossings have complex 3D geometries in the Brillouin zone and are characterized by non-trivial topology as Hopf links and chain-like nodal lines, that are protected by the perpendicular mirror planes. The spin-orbit interaction split these nodal lines into several zero-dim…
Unconventional Weyl semimetals have attracted intensive research interest in condensed matter physics and materials science, but they are very rare in two dimensions. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we predict that the Si/Bi van der Waals heterostructure is a two-dimensional unconventional quadratic double Weyl semimetal with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Although unprotected by the C3v double group symmetry of the heterostructure, the two-dimensional quadratic double Weyl semimetal is stable for compressive strains up to…
Topological semimetals in ferromagnetic materials have attracted enormous attention due to the potential applications in spintronics. Using the first-principles density functional theory together with an effective lattice model, here we present a new family of topological semimetals with a fully spin-polarized nodal loop in alkaline-metal monochalcogenide $MX$ ($M$ = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; $X$ = S, Se, Te) monolayers. The half-metallic ferromagnetism can be established in $MX$ monolayers, in which one nodal loop formed by two crossing bands with the same spin components is found at the Fermi energ…
The quest for nonmagnetic Weyl semimetals with high tunability of phase has remained a demanding challenge. As the symmetry breaking control parameter, the ferroelectric order can be steered to turn on/off the Weyl semimetals phase, adjust the band structures around the Fermi level, and enlarge/shrink the momentum separation of Weyl nodes which generate the Berry curvature as the emergent magnetic field. Here, we report the realization of a ferroelectric nonmagnetic Weyl semimetal based on indium doped Pb1 xSnxTe alloy where the underlying inversion symmetry as well as mirror symmetry is broke…
The distinct over-tilting of band crossings in topological semimetal generates the type-I and typeII classification of Dirac/Weyl and nodal-line fermions, accompanied by the exotic electronic and magnetic transport properties. In this work, we propose a concept of hybrid nodal-chain semimetal, which is identified by the linked type-I and type-II nodal rings in the Brillouin zone. Based on first-principles calculations and swarm-intelligence structure search technique, a new ternary nitride MgCaN2 crystal is proposed as the first candidate to realize a novel 3D hybrid nodal-chain state. Remarka…
Topological semimetals, extending the topological classification from insulators to metals, have greatly enriched our understanding of topological states in condensed matter. This is particularly true for topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSs). In the present paper, we identify layered materials as promising candidates for hosting TNLSs. Based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that layered ferromagnetic rare-earth-metal monohalides LnX (Ln=La, Gd; X=Cl, Br) exhibit long pursued topological phases. Specifically, single-layer LaX and single-layer GdX ar…
Nonequilibrium many-body dynamics is becoming one of the central topics of modern condensed matter physics. Floquet topological states were suggested to emerge in photodressed band structures in the presence of periodic laser driving. Here we propose a viable nonequilibrium route without requiring coherent Floquet states to reach the elusive magnetic Weyl semimetallic phase in pyrochlore iridates by ultrafast modification of the effective electron-electron interaction with short laser pulses. Combining \textit{ab initio} calculations for a time-dependent self-consistent reduced Hubbard $U$ con…

Chiral topological semimetals are materials that break both inversion and mirror symmetries. They host interesting phenomena such as the quantized circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) and the chiral magnetic effect. In this work, we report a comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis of the linear and non-linear optical responses of the chiral topological semimetal RhSi, which is known to host multifold fermions. We show that the characteristic features of the optical conductivity, which display two distinct quasi-linear regimes above and below 0.4 eV, can be linked to excitations of …
Based on the first-principles calculations within local density approximation and model analysis, we propose that the iso-structural compounds Cu2SnS3 and Cu2SnSe3 are both the simplest nodal line semimetals with only one nodal line in their crystal momentum space when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. The including of SOC drives Cu2SnS3 into a Weyl semimetal (WSM) state with only two pairs of Weyl nodes, the minimum number required for WSM with time reversal symmetry. In contrast, SOC leads Cu2SnSe3 to strong topological insulator (TI) state. This difference can be well understood as ther…
Nodal line semimetals in two-dimensional (2-D) materials have attracted intense attention currently. From fundamental physics and spintronic applications points of view, high Curie temperature ferromagnetic (FM) ones with nodal lines robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are significantly in desirable. Here, we propose that FM K2N monolayer is such Weyl nodal line semimetal. We show that K2N monolayer is dynamically stable, and has a FM ground magnetic state with the out-of-plane [001] magnetization. It shows two nodal lines in the low-energy band structures. Both nodal lines are robust aga…
Half topological states of matter and two-dimensional (2D) magnetism have gained much attention recently. In this paper, we propose a special topological semimetal phase called a 2D half Chern-Weyl semimetal (HCWS), which is a 2D magnetic Weyl semimetal bound to the half Chern insulator phase by symmetry, and the two phases can be converted to each other by manipulating the magnetization direction. We provide the symmetry conditions to realize this state in 2D systems with multiple screw axes. Tight-binding models with multiple basis and a predicted 2D material, monolayer TiTe, are shown as th…
Given the importance of crystal symmetry for the emergence of topological quantum states, we have studied, as exemplified in NbNiTe2, the interplay of crystal symmetry, atomic displacements (lattice vibration), band degeneracy, and band topology. For NbNiTe2 structure in space group 53 (Pmna) - having an inversion center arising from two glide planes and one mirror plane with a 2-fold rotation and screw axis - a full gap opening exists between two band manifolds near the Fermi energy. Upon atomic displacements by optical phonons, the symmetry lowers to space group 28 (Pma2), eliminating one gl…
We propose a new topological quantum state of matter---the two-dimensional (2D) Weyl half semimetal (WHS), which features 2D Weyl points at Fermi level belonging to a single spin channel, such that the low-energy electrons are described by fully spin-polarized 2D Weyl fermions. We predict its realization in the ground state of monolayer PtCl$_3$. We show that the material is a half metal with an in-plane magnetization, and its Fermi surface consists of a pair of fully spin-polarized Weyl points protected by a mirror symmetry, which are robust against spin-orbit coupling. Remarkably, we show th…
We report a study of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in high quality single crystals of ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. The Fermi surfaces resolved in our experiments are three-dimensional and reflect an underlying trigonal crystallographic symmetry. Combined with density functional theoretical calculations, we identify that the majority of the Fermi surfaces in the system -- of both electron and hole nature -- arise from the strong energy dispersion of the (spin-orbit gapped) mirror-protected nodal rings. We observe that an in-plane magnetic field induces a continuous evolution…
The interfacial phase-change memory (iPCM) GeTe/Sb2Te3, promising candidates for the next generation non-volatile random-access memories, exhibits fascinating topological properties. Depending on the atomic-layer-stacking sequence of the GeTe block, the iPCM can be either in the SET (Ge-Te-Ge-Te) or RESET (Te-Ge-Ge-Te) states, where the former exhibits ferroelectric polarization and electrical conductivity two orders of magnitude larger than that of the RESET state. But, its origin remains elusive. Here, we predict the emergence of a Weyl semimetal phase in the SET state induced by the ferroel…
Recently, magnetic topological semimetals have received a lot of attention due to their potential applications in the field of spintronics. By using first-principles calculations, we propose that two ferromagnetic spinel materials of X2MnO4 (X=Li, Na) have Weyl-type nodal chains around the Fermi level. Their stabilities are validated by cohesive energies, phonon dispersions, and elastic constants. The nodal chains are composed of two types of nodal loops, which are protected by the glide operation Mz, the mirror operation M101 and their equivalent. The drumhead surface states are observed on t…
The interplay between magnetism and band topology is a focus of current research on magnetic topological systems. Based on first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we reveal multiple intriguing topological states can be realized in a single system EuAgAs, controlled by the magnetic ordering. The material is Dirac semimetal in the paramagnetic state, with a pair of accidental Dirac points. Under different magnetic configurations, the Dirac points can evolve into magnetic triply-degenerate points, magnetic linear and double Weyl points, or being gapped out and making the system a topo…
Reliable and energy efficient magnetization switching by electrically-induced spin-orbit torques is of crucial technological relevance for spintronic devices implementing memory and logic functionality. Here we predict that the strength of spin-orbit torques and the related Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in topologically non-trivial magnetic insulators can exceed by far that of conventional metallic magnets. In analogy to the quantum anomalous Hall effect, we explain this extraordinary response in absence of longitudinal currents as a hallmark of magnetic monopoles in the electronic structu…
Topological magnetic Weyl semimetals have been proposed to host controllable chiral domain walls which bear a great prospect in device applications. To exploit them in applications, it is important to have a proper way to tune and manipulate these domain walls. One possible means is through magnetoelastic coupling. The involvement of rare earth in the lately proposed $R$Al$X$ ($R$=rare earth, $X$=Si and Ge) family magnetic Weyl semimetals may provide such a platform. Here we present transport and thermodynamic properties of CeAlGe under hydrostatic pressure. We find that pressure enhances the …
Recent experimental realizations of the topological semimetal states in several monolayer systems are very attractive because of their exotic quantum phenomena and technological applications. Based on first-principles density-functional theory calculations including spin-orbit coupling, we here explore the drastically different two-dimensional (2D) topological semimetal states in three monolayers Cu$_2$Ge, Fe$_2$Ge, and Fe$_2$Sn, which are isostructural with a combination of the honeycomb Cu or Fe lattice and the triangular Ge or Sn lattice. We find that (i) the nonmagnetic (NM) Cu$_{2}$Ge mon…
Half-Heusler alloy topological semimetal YPtBi is a promising candidate for an efficient spin source material having both large spin Hall angle $θ$$_{SH}$ and high thermal stability. However, high-quality YPtBi thin films with low bulk carrier density are usually grown at 600$°$C, which exceeds the limitation of 400$°$C for back end of line (BEOL) process. Here, we investigate the crystallinity and spin Hall effect of YPtBi thin films grown at lower growth temperature down to 300$°$C. Although $θ$$_{SH}$ degraded with lowering the growth temperature to 300$°$C due to degradation of the crystal…
