We report the synergy between orbital and spin-orbit torques in WTe2/Fe3GeTe2 heterostructures characterized by a Berry curvature dipole. By applying a current along the a axis in WTe2, we detect an out-of-plane magnetization in the system, which we attribute to nonequilibrium orbital magnetization linked to the Berry curvature dipole based on first-principles calculations, manifesting as the orbital Edelstein effect. This effect generates orbital torques that enable field-free perpendicular magnetization switching. Furthermore, by applying a relatively small current along the a axis and a pulsed current along the b axis in WTe2, we demonstrate controllable field-free magnetization switching of the adjacent Fe3GeTe2 layer, independently manipulating the orbital and spin-orbit torques. Our findings not only enhance the understanding of the collaborative dynamics between these torques but also suggest potential applications in magnetoresistive random-access memory.
The Berry phase and curvature are studied for the Dirac nodal line semimetal of single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)$_2$]. Using two-band model on the basis of a tight-binding model, it is shown that the Berry curvature, $\bm{B}(\bm{k})$, exists along a loop of the nodal line, on which the Berry phase is obtained from surface integral of $\bm{B}(\bm{k})$. The Berry phase, which is called Zak phase, is also calculated from one-dimensional integral of the Berry connection along a line between two equivalent points of boundaries of Brillouin zone. The possible experiment is discussed in…
Noncentrosymmetric metals are anticipated to exhibit a $dc$ photocurrent in the nonlinear optical response caused by the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are expected to be excellent candidates for observing these nonlinear effects because they carry a large Berry curvature concentrated in small regions, i.e., near the Weyl points. We have implemented the semiclassical Berry curvature dipole formalism into an $ab~initio$ scheme and investigated the second-order nonlinear response for two representative groups of materials: the TaAs-family type-I WSMs and MoTe$_2…
Berry curvature acts analogous to a magnetic field in the momentum-space, and it modifies the flow of charge carriers and entropy. This induces several intriguing magnetoelectric and magnetothermal transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals. %, including the planar Hall and planar Nernst effect. Here, we explore the impact of the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization on the thermopower in tilted type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals, using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. We analytically calculate the full magnetoconductivity matrix and use it to obtain the thermopower matrix for diff…
We study the second-order nonlinear optical response of a Weyl semimetal (WSM), i.e. a three-dimensional metal with linear band touchings acting as point-like sources of Berry curvature in momentum space, termed "Weyl-Berry monopoles". We first show that the anomalous second-order photocurrent of WSMs can be elegantly parametrized in terms of Weyl-Berry dipole and quadrupole moments. We then calculate the corresponding charge and node conductivities of WSMs with either broken time-reversal invariance or inversion symmetry. In particular, we predict a universal dissipationless second-order anom…

We propose the linear and nonlinear planar Hall effect (PHE) in tilted Weyl semimetals in the presence of an in-plane magnetic and electric field, where the field-induced Berry connection (FBC) plays a key role. We show that the PHE is ascribed to the quantum metric, distinct from the well-known chiral anomaly-induced PHE arising from the Berry curvature. Using a tilting vector to describe the model, we demonstrate the constrains on the linear and nonlinear PHE by the tilting directions. The linear PHE is intrinsic that is determined by the topological properties of energy bands, whereas the n…
We report a detailed magneto-transport study in single crystals of NbP. High quality crystals were grown by vapour transport method. An exceptionally large magnetoresistance is confirmed at low temperature which is non-saturating and is linear at high fields. Models explaining the linear magnetoresistance are discussed and it is argued that in NbP this is linked to charge carrier mobility fluctuations. Negative longitudinal magnetoresistance is not seen, unlike several other Weyl monopnictides, suggesting lack of well defined chiral anomaly in NbP. Unambiguous Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations ar…
Magnetotransport such as the giant magnetoresistance and Hall effect lies at the heart of fundamental physics and technologies. Recently, some experiments have clearly demonstrated linear magnetotransport (LMT) proportional to magnetic field but the underlying physical mechanism is still unclear. In this work, we show that Berry curvature effect is a new mechanism dominating the LMT. The Berry-curvature-induced LMT widely exists in 66 out of 122 magnetic point groups. For typical magnetic Weyl semimetals Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and ferromagnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, Berry curvature induces LMT conductivi…
Berry phase physics is closely related to a number of topological states of matter. Recently discovered topological semimetals are believed to host a nontrivial $π$ Berry phase to induce a phase shift of $\pm 1/8$ in the quantum oscillation ($+$ for hole and $-$ for electron carriers). We theoretically study the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation of Weyl and Dirac semimetals, taking into account their topological nature and inter-Landau band scattering. For a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, the phase shift is found to change nonmonotonically and go beyond known values of $\pm 1/8…
We report the synthesis and magneto-transport measurements on the single crystal of Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$. The de Haas-van Alphen oscillations with multiple frequencies have been clearly observed, from which the small effective masses and nontrivial Berry phase are extracted, implying the possible existence of the Dirac fermions in PdTe$_2$. The planar Hall effect and anisotropic longitudinal resistivity originating from the chiral anomaly and nontrivial Berry phase are observed, providing strong evidence for the nontrivial properties in PdTe$_2$. With the increase of temperature up to 150 …
The physics of massless relativistic quantum particles has recently arisen in the electronic properties of solids following the discovery of graphene. Around the accidental crossing of two energy bands, the electronic excitations are described by a Weyl equation initially derived for ultra-relativistic particles. Similar three and four band semimetals have recently been discovered in two and three dimensions. Among the remarkable features of graphene are the characterization of the band crossings by a topological Berry winding, leading to an anomalous quantum Hall effect, and a finite minimal …
Topological semimetals are three-dimensional topological states of matter, in which the conduction and valence bands touch at a finite number of points, i.e., the Weyl nodes. Topological semimetals host paired monopoles and antimonopoles of Berry curvature at the Weyl nodes and topologically protected Fermi arcs at certain surfaces. We review our recent works on quantum transport in topological semimetals, according to the strength of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields, there are competitions between the positive magnetoresistivity induced by the weak anti-localization effect and nega…
Magnetic semimetals have increasingly emerged as lucrative platforms hosting spin-based topological phenomena in real and momentum spaces. Of particular interest is the emergence of Berry curvature, whose geometric origin, accessibility from Hall transport experiments, and material tunability, bodes well for new physics and practical devices. Cr1+dTe2, a self-intercalated magnetic transition metal dichalcogenide, TMD, exhibits attractive natural attributes relevant to such applications, including topological magnetism, tunable electron filling, magnetic frustration etc. While recent studies ha…

The recent discovery of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2 opens up new avenues for research into the interactions between topological orders, magnetism, and electronic correlations. Motivated by the observations of large anomalous Hall effect because of large Berry curvature, we investigate another Berry curvature-induced phenomenon, the anomalous thermal Hall effect in Co3Sn2S2. We study it with and without strain, using a Wannier tight-binding Hamiltonian derived from first principles density functional theory calculations. We first identify this material as a tilted type-I Weyl semimetal bas…
Weyl semimetal, a three-dimensional electronic system with relativistic linear energy dispersion around gapless points carrying nontrivial Berry charge, is predicted to exhibit a wealth of unique response and transport properties.A crucial question is whether those properties are robust against disorder and whether Anderson localization occurs. In this work, the effects of nonperturbative topological (vortex loop) excitations and Berry phase in disordered time-reversal invariant 3d Weyl semimetal are studied. It is shown that the chiral symmetry is restored in the nonlinear sigma model describin…
It has been recently predicted that the interplay between Coulomb interactions and Berry curvature can produce interesting optical phenomena in topologically nontrivial two-dimensional insulators. Here, we present a theory of the optical absorption for three-dimensional, hole-doped Weyl semimetals. We find that the Berry curvature, Coulomb interactions and the nonlinearity in the single-particle energy spectrum can together enable a light-induced valley polarization. We support and supplement our numerical results with an analytical toy model calculation, which unveils topologically nontrivial…
Weyl semimetals possess low energy excitations which act as monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space. These emergent monopoles are at the heart of the extensive novel transport properties that Weyl semimetals exhibit. The singular nature of the Berry curvature around the nodal points in Weyl semimetals allows for the possibility of large anomalous transport coefficients in zero applied magnetic field. Recently a new class, termed type-II Weyl semimetals, has been demonstrated in a variety of materials, where the Weyl nodes are tilted. We present here a study of anomalous transport in thi…
In topological semimetals and insulators, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and angle-dependent planar Hall effect have been reported arising from the Berry curvature. Using the Boltzmann transport theory, we present a closed-form expression for the nonequilibrium distribution function which includes both the effects of the Berry curvature and Lorentz force. Using this formulation, we obtain analytical expressions for conductivity and resistivity tensors in Weyl semimetals demonstrating a non-monotonic field dependence arising from the competition between the two effects.
We theoretically study the effect of the Berry curvature on the transport properties of Weyl semimetals in the nonadiabatic process, which results in nonlinear optical responses. In the adiabatic process, the Berry curvature, which involves the time derivative of the Bloch states, contributes to the transport properties such as the adiabatic Thouless pump. Although this effect is very weak in usual solids, it is enhanced in Weyl semimetals, where the Berry curvature contributes to observable nonlinear optical responses due to its nodal structure. In this paper, using semiclassical Boltzmann th…
We theoretically investigate the phase of the de Haas - van Alphen oscillations in topological line-node semimetals. In these semimetals the chemical potential of charge carriers can essentially depend on the magnetic field, and this dependence changes the phase of the oscillations as compared to the phase in a three-dimensional metal with a band-contact line. Our results elucidate recent experimental data on the Berry phase for certain electron orbits in ZrSiS, ZrSiTe, and ZrSiSe.
Topologically non-trivial states characterized by Berry curvature appear in a number of materials ranging from spin-orbit-coupling driven topological insulators to graphene. In multivalley conductors, such as mono- and bilayer graphene, despite a zero total Chern number for the entire Brillouin zone, Berry curvature with different signs concentrated in different valleys can affect the observable material's transport characteristics. Here we consider thin films of rhombohedral graphite, which appear to retain truly two-dimensional properties up to tens of layers of thickness and host two-dimens…
Weyl semimetals are topological materials that provide a condensed-matter realization of the chiral anomaly. A positive longitudinal magnetoconductance quadratic in magnetic field has been promoted as a diagnostic for this anomaly. By solving the Boltzmann equation analytically, we show that the magnetoconductance can become negative in the experimentally relevant semiclassical regime of weak magnetic fields. This effect is due to the simultaneous presence of the Berry phase and the orbital magnetic moment of carriers and occurs for sufficiently strong intervalley scattering.
Berry curvature in Weyl semimetals results in very intriguing magneto-electric and magneto-thermal transport properties. In this paper, we explore the impact of the tilting of the Weyl nodes, which breaks the time-reversal symmetry, on the magneto-electric conductivity of type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals. Using the Berry curvature connected Boltzmann transport formalism, we find that in addition to the quadratic-B corrections induced by the tilt, there are also anisotropic and B-linear corrections in several elements of the conductivity matrix. For the case of magnetic field applied perpendi…
Topological Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been predicted to be excellent candidates for detecting Berry curvature dipole (BCD) and the related non-linear effects in electronics and optics due to the large Berry curvature concentrated around the Weyl nodes. And yet, linearized models of isolated tilted Weyl cones only realize a diagonal non-zero BCD tensor which sum to zero in the model of WSM with multiple Weyl nodes in the presence of mirror symmetry. On the other hand, recent \textit{ab initio} work has found that realistic WSMs like TaAs-type or MoTe$_2$-type compounds, which have mirror symm…
Various novel physical properties have emerged in Dirac electronic systems, especially the topological characters protected by symmetry. Current studies on these systems have been greatly promoted by the intuitive concepts of Berry phase and Berry curvature, which provide precise definitions of the topological orders. In this topical review, transport properties of topological insulator (Bi2Se3), topological Dirac semimetal (Cd3As2) and topological insulator-graphene heterojunction are presented and discussed. Perspectives about transport properties of two-dimensional topological nontrivial sy…
Realizing stable two-dimensional (2D) Dirac points against spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has attracted much attention because it provides a platform to study the unique transport properties. In previous work, Young and Kane [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{115}, 126803 (2015)] proposed stable 2D Dirac points with SOC, in which the Berry curvature and edge states vanish due to the coexistence of inversion and time-reversal symmetries. Herein, using the tight-binding model and k$\cdot$p effective Hamiltonian, we present that 2D Dirac points can survive in the presence of SOC without inversion symmetry. Suc…
We propose a simple scheme to construct a model whose Fermi surface is comprised of crossing-line nodes. The Hamiltonian consists of a normal hopping term and an additional term which is odd under the mirror reflection. The line nodes appear along the mirror-invariant planes, where each line node carries the quantized Berry magnetic flux. We explicitly construct a model with the $N$-fold rotational symmetry, where the $2N$ line nodes merge at the north and south poles. Photoirradiation induces a topological phase transition. When we apply photoirradiation along the $k_z$ axis, there emerge poi…
We investigate the influence of surface states on the nonlinear Hall response of non-centrosymmetric time-reversal invariant Weyl semimetals. To do so, we perform a tomography of the Berry curvature dipole in a slab system using a minimal two-band model. We find that in the type-I phase, the nonlinear Hall response is not particularly sensitive to the presence of Fermi arcs or other trivial surface states. However, in the type-II phase, we find that these surface states contribute substantially to the Berry curvature dipole, leading to a strong thickness dependence of the nonlinear Hall respon…
Topological nodal-line semimetals offer an interesting research platform to explore novel phenomena associated with its torus-shaped Fermi surface. Here, we study magnetotransport in the massive nodal-line semimetal with spin-orbit coupling and finite Berry curvature distribution which exists in many candidates. The magnetic field leads to a deformation of the Fermi torus through its coupling to the orbital magnetic moment, which turns out to be the main scenario of the magnetoresistivity (MR) induced by the Berry curvature effect. We show that a small deformation of the Fermi surface yields a…
We predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed -- the Weyl cones are "tilted" -- the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields, and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast to the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in…
The propagation of light in Weyl semimetal films is analyzed. The magnetic family of these materials is known by anomalous Hall effect, which, being enhanced by the large Berry curvature, allows one to create strong gyrotropic and nonreciprocity effects without external magnetic field. The existence of nonreciprocal waveguide electromagnetic modes in ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal films in the Voigt configuration is predicted. Thanks to the strong dielectric response caused by the gapless Weyl spectrum and the large Berry curvature, ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals combine the best waveguide proper…
Berry phase and Berry curvature play a key role in the development of topology in physics and do contribute to the transport properties in solid state systems. In this paper, we report the finding of novel nonzero Hall effect in topological material ZrTe5 flakes when in-plane magnetic field is parallel and perpendicular to the current. Surprisingly, both symmetric and antisymmetric components with respect to magnetic field are detected in the in-plane Hall resistivity. Further theoretical analysis suggests that the magnetotransport properties originate from the anomalous velocity induced by Be…
Observation of Weyl and Dirac Fermions in condensed matter systems is one of the most important discoveries. Among the very few available tools to characterize Weyl semimetals through electrical transport, negative magnetoresistance is most commonly used. Considering shortcomings of this method, new tools to characterize chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals are desirable. We employ planar Hall effect as an effective technique in half Heusler Weyl semimetal GdPtBi to study chiral anomaly. This compound exhibits a large value of 1.5 mohm cm planar Hall resistivity at 2 K and in 9 T. Our analysis re…
After the experimental realization, the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) induced nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) has attracted tremendous interest to the condensed matter community. Here, we investigate another family of Hall effect, namely, chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect (CNHE) in multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM). In contrast to the BCD induced NLHE, CNHE appears because of the combination of both chiral anomaly and anomalous velocity due to non-trivial Berry curvature. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann theory within the relaxation time approximation, we show that, in contrast to the chiral…
Weyl semimetals are promising quantum materials that offer unique topological properties. Lately, it has been shown that laser-driven electron dynamics have characteristic signatures in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals. The transition from Dirac to Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either inversion or time-reversal symmetry. The present work shows that the laser-driven electron dynamics in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has intriguing features in its high-harmonic spectrum. It is found that the parity and magnitude of the non-zero Berry curvatur…
Type-II Weyl semimetals are characterized by the tilted linear dispersion in the low-energy excitations, mimicking Weyl fermions but with manifest violation of the Lorentz invariance, which has intriguing quantum transport properties. The magnetoconductivity of type-II Weyl semimetals is investigated numerically based on lattice models in parallel electric and magnetic field. We show that in the high-field regime, the sign of the magnetoconductivity of an inversion-symmetry-breaking type-II Weyl semimetals depends on the direction of the magnetic field, whereas in the weak field regime, positi…
It has recently been demonstrated that various topological states, including Dirac, Weyl, nodal-line, and triple-point semimetal phases, can emerge in antiferromagnetic (AFM) half-Heusler compounds. However, how to determine the AFM structure and to distinguish different topological phases from transport behaviors remains unknown. We show that, due to the presence of combined time-reversal and fractional translation symmetry, the recently proposed second-order nonlinear Hall effect can be used to characterize different topological phases with various AFM configurations. Guided by the symmetry …
Although topological invariants have been introduced to classify the appearance of protected electronic states at surfaces of insulators, there are no corresponding indexes for Weyl semimetals whose nodal points may appear randomly in the bulk Brillouin Zone (BZ). Here we use a well-known result that every Weyl point acts as a Dirac monopole and generates integer Berry flux to search for the monopoles on rectangular BZ grids that are commonly employed in self-consistent electronic structure calculations. The method resembles data mining technology of computer science and is demonstrated on loc…
We introduce an operational definition of the Berry Phase Rectification Tensor as the second-order change of polarization of a material in response to an ideal short pulse of an electric field. Under time-reversal symmetry this tensor depends exclusively on the Berry phases of the Bloch bands and not their energy dispersions, making it an intrinsic property to each material which contains contributions from both the inter-band shift currents and the intra-band Berry Curvature Dipole. We also introduce the Solar Rectification Vector as a technologically relevant figure of merit for a bulk photo…
The Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift and the Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift are optical phenomena which describe the longitudinal and transverse lateral shifts at the reflection interface, respectively. Here, we report the GH and IF shifts in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) - a promising material harboring low energy Weyl fermions, a massless fermionic cousin of photons. Our results show that GH shift in WSMs is valley-independent which is analogous to that discovered in a 2D relativistic material - graphene. However, the IF shift has never been explored in non-optical systems, and here we show that it is valley-dep…
Negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, in the presence of an external magnetic field parallel to the direction of an applied current, has recently been experimentally verified in Weyl semimetals and topological insulators in the bulk conduction limit. The appearance of negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in topological semimetals is understood as an effect of chiral anomaly, whereas it is not well-defined in topological insulators. Another intriguing phenomenon, planar Hall effect - appearance of a transverse voltage in the plane of applied co-planar electric and magnetic fields not perf…
It has recently been realized that the first-order moment of the Berry curvature, namely the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) can give rise to non-linear current in a wide variety of time-reversal invariant and non-centrosymmetric materials. While the BCD in two-dimensional Dirac systems is known to be finite only in the presence of either substantial spin-orbit coupling where low-energy Dirac quasiparticles form tilted cones or higher order warping of the Fermi surface, we argue that the low-energy Dirac quasiparticles arising from the merging of a pair of Dirac points without any tilt or warping…
