WloopPHI is a Python code that expands the features of WIEN2k, a full-potential all-electron density functional theory package, by the characterization of Weyl semimetals. It enables the calculation of the chirality (or "monopole charge") associated with Weyl nodes and nodal lines. The theoretical methodology for the calculation of the chirality is based on an extended Wilson loop method and a Berry phase approach. We validate the code using TaAs, which is a well-characterized Weyl semimetal, both theoretically and experimentally. Afterwards, we applied the method to the characterization of YRh$_6$Ge$_4$ and found two sets of Weyl points (ca. 0.2 eV below the Fermi energy) together with a topological nodal line (protected by mirror symmetry) crossing the Fermi energy and mapped their chiralities.
In topological semimetals such as Weyl, Dirac, and nodal-line semimetals, the band gap closes at points or along lines in k space which are not necessarily located at high-symmetry positions in the Brillouin zone. Therefore, it is not straightforward to find these topological semimetals by ab initio calculations because the band structure is usually calculated only along high-symmetry lines. In this paper, we review recent studies on topological semimetals by ab initio calculations. We explain theoretical frameworks which can be used for the search for topological semimetal materials, and some…
So far, the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) is the only possible quantized signal in Weyl semimetals. With inversion and mirror symmetries broken, Weyl and multifold fermions in band structures with opposite chiralities can stay at different energies and generate a net topological charge. Such kind of net topological charge can present as a quantized signal in the circular polarized light induced injection current. According to current theoretical understanding, RhSi and its counterparts are believed to be the most promising candidate for the experimental observation of the quantized CPGE…
A large number of hitherto unexplored elastic, thermophysical, acoustic, and optoelectronic properties of a double Weyl semimetal SrSi2 have been investigated in this study. Density functional theory (DFT) based methodology has been employed. Analyses of computed elastic parameters reveal that SrSi2 is a mechanically stable, ductile, moderately machinable, and relatively soft material. The compound is predicted to be dynamically stable and possesses significant metallic bonding. Study of thermophysical properties, namely, Debye temperature, Grüneisen parameter, acoustic parameters, melting tem…
With the discovery of topological semimetals, it has been found that the band touching points near the Fermi level are of great importance. They give rise to many exciting phenomena in these materials. Moreover, these points, commonly known as nodes, are related to several properties of these semimetals. Thus, the proper estimation of their coordinates is extremely needed for better understanding of the properties of these materials. We have designed a Python 3 based code named PY-Nodes for efficiently finding the nodes present in a given material using first-principle approach. The present ve…
The origins of hydrodynamic transport in strongly interacting Dirac and Weyl semimetals have remained elusive in theoretical descriptions and experimental measurements. We investigate the structure and microscopic properties of transport in WP$_2$, a type-II Weyl semimetal, to probe the emergence of hydrodynamic phenomena. We characterize the quantum behavior underlying the hydrodynamic transport regime as a function of temperature through ab initio calculations of the relevant microscopic scattering processes, including electron-phonon, electron-electron, and phonon-mediated electron-electron…
The topological Weyl semimetal MoTe2, in the orthorhombic phase, is an important system both from the point of view of fundamental physics and potential applications. In this study we have investigated the elastic, electronic, bonding and optical properties of MoTe2 using density functional theory. Study of the elastic constants and moduli indicates that MoTe2 is a relatively soft material with high level of machinability. Mechanical stability conditions are fulfilled. The compound possesses elastic and mechanical anisotropy and is prone to brittle fracture. Elastic parameters indicate that bo…
By means of Shubnikov-de-Haas and de-Haas-van-Alphen oscillations, and ab initio calculations, we have studied the Fermi surface of high-quality BaNiS$_2$ single crystals, with mean free path $l \sim 400 ~\textÅ$. The angle and temperature dependence of quantum oscillations indicates a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, made of an electron-like tube centred at $Γ$, and of 4 hole-like cones, generated by Dirac bands, weakly dispersive in the out-of-plane direction. Ab initio electronic structure calculations, in the density functional theory framework, show that the inclusion of screened exch…
The interplay between electronic correlations and topological protection may offer a rich avenue for discovering emergent quantum phenomena in condensed matter. However, electronic correlations have so far been little investigated in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) by experiments. Here, we report a combined optical spectroscopy and theoretical calculation study on the strength of electronic correlations in a kagome magnet Co3Sn2S2 and the influence of electronic correlations on its WSM state expected within a single-particle picture. The electronic kinetic energy estimated from our optical data is abou…
In this work, we have studied the structural, elastic, mechanical, electronic, bonding, acoustic, thermal and optical properties of TaX (X = P, As) in detail via first-principles method using the density functional theory. A comprehensive study of elastic constants and moduli shows that both TaP and TaAs possesses low to medium level of elastic anisotropy (depending on the measure), reasonably good machinability, mixed bonding characteristics with ionic and covalent contributions, brittle nature and relatively high Vickers hardness with a low Debye temperature and melting temperature. The mini…
Density functional theory (DFT) approaches have been ubiquitously used to predict topological order and non-trivial band crossings in real materials, like Dirac, Weyl semimetals and so on. However, use of less accurate exchange-correlation functional often yields false prediction of non-trivial band order leading to misguide the experimental judgment about such materials. Using relatively more accurate hybrid functional exchange-correlation, we explore a set of (already) experimentally synthesized materials (crystallizing in space group P6_3/mmc) Our calculations based on more accurate functio…
We present the topology of spin-split Fermi surface of CaAgAs as determined by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements combined with ab initio calculations. We have determined the torus-shaped nodal-line Fermi surface from the dHvA oscillations of $β$ and $γ$ orbits. The former orbit encircles the nodal-line, while the latter does not. Nevertheless, a nontrivial Berry phase is found for both orbits. The nontrivial phase of $β$ arises from the orbital characters, which can be expressed as a pseudospin rotating around the nodal-line. On the other hand, the phase of $γ$ is attributed to the…
In nodal-line semimetals linearly dispersing states form Dirac loops in the reciprocal space, with high degree of electron-hole symmetry and almost-vanishing density of states near the Fermi level. The result is reduced electronic screening and enhanced correlations between Dirac quasiparticles. Here we investigate the electronic structure of ZrSiSe, by combining time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) complemented by an extended Hubbard model (DFT +U +V). We show that electronic correlations are reduced on an ultrashort timescale by o…
Nonequilibrium many-body dynamics is becoming one of the central topics of modern condensed matter physics. Floquet topological states were suggested to emerge in photodressed band structures in the presence of periodic laser driving. Here we propose a viable nonequilibrium route without requiring coherent Floquet states to reach the elusive magnetic Weyl semimetallic phase in pyrochlore iridates by ultrafast modification of the effective electron-electron interaction with short laser pulses. Combining \textit{ab initio} calculations for a time-dependent self-consistent reduced Hubbard $U$ con…
Weyl semimetals are materials with topologically nontrivial band structure both in the bulk and on the surface, hosting chiral nodes which are sinks and sources of Berry curvature. Weyl semimetals have been predicted, and recently measured, to exhibit large nonlinear optical responses. This discovery, along with their high mobilities, makes Weyl semimetals relevant to a broad spectrum of applications in optoelectronic, nanophotonic and quantum optical devices. While there is growing interest in understanding and characterizing the linear and nonlinear behavior of Weyl semimetals, an ab initio …
The low-energy quasiparticles of Weyl semimetals are a condensed-matter realization of the Weyl fermions introduced in relativistic field theory. Chiral anomaly, the nonconservation of the chiral charge under parallel electric and magnetic fields, is arguably the most important phenomenon of Weyl semimetals and has been explained as an imbalance between the occupancies of the gapless, zeroth Landau levels with opposite chiralities. This widely accepted picture has served as the basis for subsequent studies. Here we report the breakdown of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals in a strong magne…
We develop an ab initio method to simulate the infrared vibrational response of metallic systems in the framework of time-dependent density functional perturbation theory. By introducing a generalized frequency-dependent Born effective charge tensor, we show that phonon peaks in the reflectivity of metals can be always described by a Fano function, whose shape is determined by the complex nature of the frequency-dependent effective charges and electronic dielectric tensor. The IR vibrational properties of graphite, chosen as a representative test case to benchmark our method, are found to be a…
Non-symmorphic chiral topological crystals host exotic multifold fermions, and their associated Fermi arcs helically wrap around and expand throughout the Brillouin zone between the high-symmetry center and surface-corner momenta. However, Fermi-arc splitting and realization of the theoretically proposed maximal Chern number rely heavily on the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. In the present work, we investigate the topological states of a new chiral crystal, PtGa, which has the strongest SOC among all chiral crystals reported to date. With a comprehensive investigation using high-resolutio…
Discovery of topological Weyl semimetals has revealed the opportunities to realize several extraordinary physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Specifically, these semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling, broken inversion symmetry and novel spin texture are predicted to exhibit a large spin Hall effect that can efficiently convert the charge current to a spin current. Here we report the direct experimental observation of a large spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects in Weyl semimetal WTe2 at room temperature obeying Onsager reciprocity relation. We demonstrate the detection of th…
Molybdenum ditelluride, MoTe2, is a versatile material where the topological phase can be readily tuned by manipulating the associated structural phase transition. The fine details of the band structure of MoTe2, key to understanding its topological properties, have proven difficult to disentangle experientially due to the multi-band character of the material. Through experimental optical conductivity spectra, we detect two strong low-energy interband transitions. Both are linked to excitations between spin-orbit split bands. The lowest interband transition shows a strong thermal shift, pointi…
Topological semimetals (TSMs) have attracted numerous attention due to their exotic physical properties and great application potentials. Silicon-based TMSs are of particularly importance because of their high abundance, nontoxicity and natural compatibility with current semiconductor industry. In this work, an ideal low-energy topological nodal-line semimetal (TNLSM) silicon (I4/mcm-Si$_{48}$) with a clean band crossing at Fermi level is screened from thousands of silicon allotropes by the transferable tight-binding and DFT-HSE calculations. The results of formation energy, phonon dispersion,…
Topological materials host fascinating low dimensional gapless states at the boundary. As a prominent example, helical topological edge states (TESs) of two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTIs) and their stacked three-dimensional (3D) equivalent, weak topological insulators (WTIs), have sparked research enthusiasm due to their potential application in the next generation of electronics/spintronics with low dissipation. Here, we propose layered superconducting material CaSn as a WTI with nontrivial Z2 as well as nodal line semimetal protected by crystalline non-symmorphic symmetry. Our sy…
In this paper we report a detailed analysis of the temperature-dependent optical properties of epitaxially grown cadmium arsenide (Cd$_3$As$_2$), a newly discovered three-dimensional Dirac semimetal. Dynamic Fermi level tuning -- instigated from Pauli-blocking in the linear Dirac cone -- and varying Drude response, generate large variations in the mid and far-infrared optical properties. We demonstrate thermo-optic shifts larger than those of traditional III-V semiconductors, which we attribute to the obtained large thermal expansion coefficient as revealed by first-principles calculations. El…
Databases compiled using ab-initio and symmetry-based calculations now contain tens of thousands of topological insulators and topological semimetals. This makes the application of modern machine learning methods to topological materials possible. Using gradient boosted trees, we show how to construct a machine learning model which can predict the topology of a given existent material with an accuracy of 90%. Such predictions are orders of magnitude faster than actual ab-initio calculations. Through extensive testing of different models we determine which properties help detect topological mat…

LaAgSb$_{2}$ is a Dirac semimetal showing charge density wave (CDW) order. Previous ARPES results suggest the existence of the Dirac-cone-like structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level along the $Γ$-M direction [X. Shi et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 081105(R) (2016)]. This paper is devoted to a complex analysis of the electronic band structure of LaAgSb$_{2}$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and theoretical calculations within the direct ab initio method as well as tight binding model formulation. To investigate the possible surface states we performed the direct DFT …
Using ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory and effective model analysis, we propose that the trigonal YH3(Space Group: P-3c1) at ambient pressure is a node-line semimetal when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. This trigonal YH3 has very clean electronic structure near Fermi level and its nodal lines locate very closely to the Fermi energy, which makes it a perfect system for model analysis. Symmetry analysis shows that the nodal ring in this compound is protected by the glide-plane symmetry, where the band inversion of |Y+,dxz> and |H1-,s> orbits at Gamma point is resp…
The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurem…
Discovery and observations of exotic, quantized optical and electrical responses have sparked renewed interest in nonmagnetic chiral crystals. Within this class of materials, six group V transition metal ditetrelides, that is, XY$_2$ (X = V, Nb, Ta and Y = Si, Ge), host composite Weyl nodes on high-symmetry lines, with Kramers-Weyl fermions at time-reversal invariant momenta. In addition, at least two of these materials, NbGe$_2$ and NbSi$_2$, exhibit superconducting transitions at low temperatures. The interplay of strong electron-phonon interaction and complex Fermi surface topology present …
We study the electronic structure of the nodal line semimetal ZrSiTe both experimentally and theoretically. We find two different surface states in ZrSiTe - topological drumhead surface states and trivial floating band surface states. Using the spectra of Wilson loops, we show that a non-trivial Berry phase that exists in a confined region within the Brillouin Zone gives rise to the topological drumhead-type surface states. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ structure of the Berry phase induces a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ 'modular arithmetic' of the surface states, allowing surface states deriving from different nodal l…
The topological phases of matter provide the opportunity to observe many exotic properties, like the existence of two dimensional topological surface states in the form of Dirac cone in topological insulators, chiral transport through open Fermi arc in Weyl semimetals etc. However, these properties can only affect the transport characteristics and therefore can be useful for applications only if the topological phenomena occur near the Fermi level. CaAgAs is a promising candidate, wherein the ab-initio calculations predict line-node at the Fermi level which on including spin-orbit coupling tra…
The change in the composition of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te IV-VI semiconductor or in its lattice parameter can drive a transition from the topologically trivial to the topological crystalline insulator (TCI), crossing a region where the alloy is in the Weyl semimetal phase. Incorporation of the magnetic Mn ions induces strong perturbations of the electronic structure, which act on both orbital and spin variables. Our first principles calculations show that the presence of Mn shifts the TCI and the Weyl region towards higher Sn contents in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te. When the Mn spin polarization is finite, t…
