We continue our study of the thermodynamic geometry of the spin one model from paper I by probing the state space geometry of the Blume Emery Griffiths (BEG) model, and its limiting case of the Blume Capel model, in their mean field approximation. By accounting for the stochastic variables involved we construct from the thermodynamic state space two complimentary two-dimensional geometries with curvatures $R_m$ and $R_q$ which are shown to encode correlations in the model's two order parameters, namely, the magnetization $m$ and the quadrupole moment $q$. The geometry is investigated in the zero as well as the non zero magnetic field region. We find that the relevant scalar curvatures diverge to negative infinity along the critical lines with the correct scaling and amplitude. We then probe the geometry of phase coexistence and find that the relevant curvatures predict the coexistence curve remarkably well via their respective $R$-crossing diagrams. We also briefly comment on the effectiveness of the geometric correlation length compared to the commonly used Ornstein-Zernicke type correlation length vis-a-vis their scaling properties.
Liquid-vapor coexistence curves and critical parameters for hard-core 1:1 electrolyte models with diameter ratios lambda = sigma_{-}/σ_{+}=1 to 5.7 have been studied by fine-discretization Monte Carlo methods. Normalizing via the length scale sigma_{+-}=(sigma_{+} + sigma_{-})/2 relevant for the low densities in question, both Tc* (=kB Tc sigma_{+-}/q^2 and rhoc* (= rhoc sigma _{+-}^{3}) decrease rapidly (from ~ 0.05 to 0.03 and 0.08 to 0.04, respectively) as lambda increases. These trends, which unequivocally contradict current theories, are closely mirrored by results for tightly tethered di…
Finite size scaling (FSS) analysis of the liquid gas criticality is complicated by the absence of any broken symmetry. This, in particular, does not allow a straightforward finding of the coexistence line and the critical point. The numerical flowgram (NF) method is adapted for a controlled determination of the coexistence line and the critical point, with the critical indices $μ,\, ν$ measured within 1-2% of the total error. The approach based on the NF for measuring the non-analytical corrections to the diameter - the mean density of the liquid and gas phases along the coexistence line - is …
In real magnets the tendency towards ferromagnetism, promoted by exchange coupling, is usually frustrated by dipolar interaction. As a result, the uniformly ordered phase is replaced by modulated (multi-domain) phases, characterized by different order parameters rather than the global magnetization. The transitions occurring within those modulated phases and towards the disordered phase are generally not of second-order type. Nevertheless, strong experimental evidence indicates that a standard critical behavior is recovered when comparatively small fields are applied that stabilize the uniform…
A novel algorithm is presented that yields precise estimates of coexisting liquid and gas densities, $ρ^{\pm}(T)$, from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of model fluids near criticality. The algorithm utilizes data for the isothermal minima of the moment ratio $Q_{L}(T;<ρ>_{L})$ $\equiv< m^{2}>_{L}^{2}/< m^{4}>_{L}$ in $L$$ \times$$ ...$$ \times$$ L$ boxes, where $m=ρ-<ρ>_{L}$. When $L$$ \to$$ \infty$ the minima, $Q_{\scriptsize m}^{\pm}(T;L)$, tend to zero while their locations, $ρ_{\scriptsize m}^{\pm}(T;L)$, approach $ρ^{+}(T)$ and $ρ^{-}(T)$. Finite-size scaling relates the ratio {\…
The critical behaviour of the Ising model in the absence of an external magnetic field can be specified either through spontaneous symmetry breaking (thermal criticality) or through cluster percolation (geometric criticality). We extend this to finite external fields for the case of the Potts' model, showing that a geometric analysis leads to the same first order/second order structure as found in thermodynamic studies. We calculate the Kertész line, separating percolating and non-percolating regimes, both analytically and numerically for the Potts model in presence of an external magnetic fie…
Numerical simulations of systems at coexistence are known to yield unstable fields in some regions of the density parameters, as well as inequivalence of ensembles. The Van der Waals-like loops are attributed to effects of the interface between the coexisting phases, but the question of convexity remains unresolved. We recover the theory developed by Hill in the 1960's, and adapt it to include the interface free energy. Our adapted theory is verified through carefully planned simulations, and gives a thermodynamic description of the interface behaviour inside the coexistence region which resto…
We present numerical and analytical results for the thermodynamical properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain at arbitrary external magnetic field. Special emphasis is placed on logarithmic corrections in the susceptibility and specific heat at very low temperatures ($T/J=10^{-24}$) and small fields. A longstanding controversy about the specific heat is resolved. At zero temperature the spin-Peierls exponent is calculated in dependence on the external magnetic field. This describes the energy response of the system to commensurate and incommensurate modulations of the lattice. The exponent f…
We consider a family of thermodynamic models such that the energy density can be expressed as an asymptotic expansion in the scale formal parameter and whose terms are suitable functions of the volume density. We examine the possibility to construct solutions for the Maxwell thermodynamic relations relying on their symmetry properties and deduce the critical properties implied in terms of the the dynamics of coexistence curves in the space of thermodynamic variables.
Neutral theories have played a crucial and revolutionary role in fields such as population genetics and biogeography. These theories are critical by definition, in the sense that the overall growth rate of each single allele/species/type vanishes. Thus each species in a neutral model sits at the edge between invasion and extinction, allowing for the coexistence of symmetric/neutral types. However, in finite systems, mono-dominated states are ineludibly reached in relatively short times owing to demographic fluctuations, thus leaving us with an unsatisfactory framework to rationalize empiricall…
The recent paper cited above claims that a molecular simulation of one specific model of supercooled water establishes a stable interface separating two metastable liquid phases, which would imply the existence of metastable two-liquid criticality for that model. Here, we note that this claim conflicts with fundamental principles and with earlier work published in the \textit{Journal of Chemical Physics}, and we show that the claim is unjustified by the data put forward to support the conclusion. Other technical problems are also noted.
Specialized Monte Carlo methods are nowadays routinely employed, in combination with thermodynamic integration (TI), to locate phase boundaries of classical many-particle systems. This is especially useful for the fluid-solid transition, where a critical point does not exist and both phases may notoriously go deeply metastable. Using the Lennard-Jones model for demonstration, we hereby investigate on the alternate possibility of tracing reasonably accurate transition lines directly by integrating the pressure equation of state computed in a canonical-ensemble simulation with local moves. The r…
We will present elementary scaling arguments focussed on the thermodynamics in the proximity of the quantum critical point in the cuprate superconductors. Extending the analysis centered on the Grüneisen parameter by Rosch, Si and coworkers to the cuprates, we demonstrate that a combination of specific heat- and chemical potential measurements can reveal the nature of the zero temperature singularity. From the known specific heat data it follows that the effective number of time dimensions has to equal the number of space dimensions, while we find a total of six scaling laws governing the temp…
The density profile and Gibbs adsorption of a near-critical fluid confined between two identical planar walls is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation and by density functional theory for a Lennard-Jones fluid. By reducing the strength of wall-fluid interactions relative to fluid-fluid interactions we observe a crossover from behaviour characteristic of the normal surface universality class, strong critical adsorption, to behaviour characteristic of a 'neutral' wall. The crossover is reminiscent of that which occurs near the ordinary surface transition in Ising films subject to vanishing …
By combining accurate liquid-vapor coexistence and heat-capacity data, we have unambiguously separated two non-analytical contributions of liquid-gas asymmetry in fluid criticality and proved the validity of "complete scaling" [Fisher et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 696 (2000); Phys. Rev. E, 67, 061506, (2003)]. We have also developed a method to obtain two scaling-field coefficients, responsible for the two sources of the asymmetry, from mean-field equations of state. Since the asymmetry effects are completely determined by Ising critical exponents, there is no need for a special renormalization…
We introduce a dissipative version of the Zhang's model of Self-Organized Criticality, where a parameter allows to tune the local energy dissipation. We analyze the main dynamical features of the model and relate in particular the Lyapunov spectrum with the transport properties in the stationary regime. We develop a thermodynamic formalism where we define formal Gibbs measure, partition function and pressure characterizing the avalanche distributions. We discuss the infinite size limit in this setting. We show in particular that a Lee-Yang phenomenon occurs in this model, for the only conserva…
We consider a two-dimensional (d=2) kagomé lattice gas model with attractive three-particle interactions around each triangular face of the kagomé lattice. Exact solutions are obtained for multiparticle correlations along the liquid and vapor branches of the coexistence curve and at criticality. The correlation solutions are also determined along the continuation of the curvilinear diameter of the coexistence region into the disordered fluid region. The method generates a linear algebraic system of correlation identities with coefficients dependent only upon the interaction parameter. Using a …
We consider an out-of-equilibrium lattice model consisting of 2D discrete rotators, in contact with heat reservoirs at different temperatures. The equilibrium counterpart of such model, the clock-model, exhibits three phases; a low-temperature ordered phase, a quasi-liquid phase, and a high-temperature disordered phase, with two corresponding phase transitions. In the out-of-equilibrium model the simultaneous breaking of spatial symmetry and thermal equilibrium give rise to directed rotation of the spin variables. In this regime the system behaves as a thermal machine converting heat currents …
In a recent article [M. Merolle et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 102, 10837 (2005)] it was argued that dynamic heterogeneity in $d$-dimensional glass formers is a manifestation of an order-disorder phenomenon in the $d+1$ dimensions of spacetime. By considering a dynamical analogue of the free energy, evidence was found for phase coexistence between active and inactive regions of spacetime, and it was suggested that this phenomenon underlies the glass transition. Here we develop these ideas further by investigating in detail the one-dimensional Fredrickson-Andersen (FA) model in which the ac…
The square-well fluid with hard-sphere diameters is studied within the framework of Thermodynamic Geometry (TG). Coexistence and spinodal curves, as well as the Widom line for ranges $λ^{*} = 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0$ for this fluid are carefully studied using geometric methods. We are able to show that, unlike coexistence curves, an exact result can be given along all the thermodynamic space and for all potential ranges for spinodal curves. Additionally, $R$-Widom line which is defined as the locus of extrema of the curvature scalar is calculated as a function of the potential range, satisfying ne…
We study the spin-1 Ising model with non-local constraints imposed by the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model of self-organized criticality (SOC). The model is constructed as if the sandpile is being built on a (honeycomb) lattice with Ising interactions. In this way we combine two models that exhibit power-law decay of correlation functions characterized by different exponents. We discuss the model properties through an order parameter and the mean energy per node, as well as the temperature dependence of their fourth-order Binder cumulants. We find (i) a thermodynamic phase transition at a fi…
The one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger Bose gas is a prototypical many-body system featuring universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) physics and free fermion quantum criticality. We analytically calculate finite temperature local pair correlations for the strong coupling Bose gas at quantum criticality using the polylog function in the framework of the Yang-Yang thermodynamic equations. We show that the local pair correlation has the universal value $g^{(2)}(0)\approx 2 p/(n\varepsilon)$ in the quantum critical regime, the TLL phase and the quasi-classical region, where $p$ is the pressure per uni…
Anomalous behavior of water in superooled region (namely decrease of density and sharp increase of response functions at atmospheric pressure) are manly associated with either existence of liquid-liquid criticality or re-entering vapor-liquid spinodal into positive pressure. Despite different origin both scenarios introduce divergence of the response functions. We articulate in the communication that the criticality is behind water anomalies, water has normal vapor-liquid spinodal and that the re-entering feature was predicted because of curved density surface as a consequence of existence of …
We study self-organisation of collective motion as a thermodynamic phenomenon, in the context of the first law of thermodynamics. It is expected that the coherent ordered motion typically self-organises in the presence of changes in the (generalised) internal energy and of (generalised) work done on, or extracted from, the system. We aim to explicitly quantify changes in these two quantities in a system of simulated self-propelled particles, and contrast them with changes in the system's configuration entropy. In doing so, we adapt a thermodynamic formulation of the curvatures of the internal …
We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of su($m|n$) supersymmetric spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type with a chemical potential term. We obtain a closed-form expression for the partition function and deduce a description of the spectrum in terms of the supersymmetric version of Haldane's motifs, which we apply to obtain an analytic expression for the free energy per site in the thermodynamic limit. By studying the low-temperature behavior of the free energy, we characterize the critical behavior of the chains with $1\le m,n\le2$, determining the critical regions and the correspondi…
Coexistence properties of the hard-core attractive Yukawa potential with inverse-range parameter kappa=9, 10, 12 and 15 are calculated by applying canonical Monte Carlo simulation. As previously shown for longer ranges, we show that also for the ranges considered here the coexistence curves scaled by the critical density and temperature obey the law of corresponding states, and that a linear relationship between the critical density and the reciprocal of the critical temperature holds. The simulation results are compared with the predictions of the self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike approximatio…
Quantum criticality of strongly attractive Fermi gas with $SU(3)$ symmetry in one dimension is studied via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations. The phase transitions driven by the chemical potential $μ$, effective magnetic field $H_1$, $H_2$ (chemical potential biases) are analyzed at the quantum criticality. The phase diagram and critical fields are analytically determined by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations in zero temperature limit. High accurate equations of state, scaling functions are also obtained analytically for the strong interacting gases. The dynamic exponent $z=2…
In this paper, we analytically study the critical exponents and universal amplitudes of the thermodynamic curvatures such as the intrinsic and extrinsic curvature at the critical point of the small-large black hole phase transition for the charged AdS black holes. At the critical point, it is found that the normalized intrinsic curvature $R_N$ and extrinsic curvature $K_N$ has critical exponents 2 and 1, respectively. Based on them, the universal amplitudes $R_Nt^2$ and $K_Nt$ are calculated with the temperature parameter $t=T/T_c-1$ where $T_c$ the critical value of the temperature. Near the …
We study the long-range quantum correlations in the anisotropic XY-model. By first examining the thermodynamic limit we show that employing the quantum discord as a figure of merit allows one to capture the main features of the model at zero temperature. Further, by considering suitably large site separations we find that these correlations obey a simple scaling behavior for finite temperatures, allowing for efficient estimation of the critical point. We also address ground-state factorization of this model by explicitly considering finite size systems, showing its relation to the energy spect…
A simple random-neighbor SOC model that combines properties of the Bak-Sneppen and the relaxation oscillators (slip-stick) models is introduced. The analysis in terms of branching processes is transparent and gives insight about the development of large but finite mean avalanche sizes in dissipative models. In the thermodynamic limit, the distribution of states has a simple analytical form and the mean avalanche size, as a function of the coupling parameter strength, is exactly calculable.
A two-dimensional system of 10000 hard disks with square periodic boundary conditions, at a density in the middle of the 2-phase region predicted from equation-of-state data, when subjected to a weak external uniform force, is seen to phase separate. Thermodynamic profiles of the inhomogeneous two-phase system agree with the local density approximation (LDA) of density functional theory. There is no indication of any mesophase.
We consider the Nielsen complexity ${\mathcal C}_N$, the Loschmidt echo ${\mathcal L}$, and the Fubini-Study complexity $τ$ in the transverse XY model, following a sudden quantum quench, in the thermodynamic limit. At small times, the first two are related by ${\mathcal L} \sim e^{-{\mathcal C}_N}$. By computing a novel time-dependent quantum information metric, we show that in this regime, ${\mathcal C}_N \sim dτ^2$, up to lowest order in perturbation. The former relation continues to hold in the same limit at large times, whereas the latter does not. Our results indicate that in the thermody…
Cavitation and sulcification of soft elastomers are two examples of thresholdless, nonlinear instabilities that evade detection by linearization. I show that the onset of such instabilities can be understood as a kind of phase coexistence between multiple scale-invariant states, and I constructively enumerate the possible scale-invariant states of incompressible rubber in two dimensions. Whereas true phases (like the affine deformations of rubber) are homogeneous, the alternatives are inhomogeneous. In terms of the thermodynamics of solids, both classes of states must generally be given equal …
We use computer simulations to investigate the extended phase diagram of a supercooled liquid linearly coupled to a quenched reference configuration. An extensive finite-size scaling analysis demonstrates the existence of a random-field Ising model (RFIM) critical point and of a first-order transition line, in agreement with recent field-theoretical approaches. The dynamics in the vicinity of this critical point resembles the peculiar activated scaling of RFIM-like systems, and the overlap autocorrelation displays a logarithmic stretching. Our study demonstrates RFIM criticality in the thermod…
