A two-dimensional system of 10000 hard disks with square periodic boundary conditions, at a density in the middle of the 2-phase region predicted from equation-of-state data, when subjected to a weak external uniform force, is seen to phase separate. Thermodynamic profiles of the inhomogeneous two-phase system agree with the local density approximation (LDA) of density functional theory. There is no indication of any mesophase.
The phase diagram of two-dimensional continuous particle systems is studied using Event-Chain Monte Carlo. For soft disks with repulsive power-law interactions $\propto r^{-n}$ with $n \gtrsim 6$, the recently established hard-disk melting scenario ($n \to \infty$) holds: a first-order liquid-hexatic and a continuous hexatic-solid transition are identified. Close to $n = 6$, the coexisting liquid exhibits very long orientational correlations, and positional correlations in the hexatic are extremely short. For $n\lesssim 6$, the liquid-hexatic transition is continuous, with correlations consist…
High temperature approximation (HTA) is used to describe the phase behavior of polydisperse multi-Yukawa hard-sphere chain fluid mixtures with chain length polydispersity. It is demonstrated that in the frames of the HTA the model belongs to the class of ``truncatable free energy models'', i.e. the models with thermodynamical properties (Helmholtz free energy, chemical potential and pressure) defined by the finite number of generalized moments. Using this property we were able to calculate the complete phase diagram (i.e., cloud and shadow curves as well as binodals) and chain length distribut…
We present a tethered Monte Carlo simulation of the crystallization of hard spheres. Our method boosts the traditional umbrella sampling to the point of making practical the study of constrained Gibb's free energies depending on several crystalline order-parameters. We obtain high-accuracy estimates of the fluid-crystal coexistence pressure for up to 2916 particles (enough to accommodate fluid-solid interfaces). We are able to extrapolate to infinite volume the coexistence pressure (p_{co}=11.5727(10) k_B T/σ^3) and the interfacial free energy (γ_{100}=0.636(11) k_B T/σ^2).
The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The two coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.
Liquid-vapor coexistence curves and critical parameters for hard-core 1:1 electrolyte models with diameter ratios lambda = sigma_{-}/σ_{+}=1 to 5.7 have been studied by fine-discretization Monte Carlo methods. Normalizing via the length scale sigma_{+-}=(sigma_{+} + sigma_{-})/2 relevant for the low densities in question, both Tc* (=kB Tc sigma_{+-}/q^2 and rhoc* (= rhoc sigma _{+-}^{3}) decrease rapidly (from ~ 0.05 to 0.03 and 0.08 to 0.04, respectively) as lambda increases. These trends, which unequivocally contradict current theories, are closely mirrored by results for tightly tethered di…
The width of the distribution of species in a polydisperse system is employed in a small-variable expansion, to obtain a well-controlled and compact scheme by which to calculate phase equilibria in multi-phase systems. General and universal relations are derived, which determine the partitioning of the fluid components among the phases. The analysis applies to mixtures of arbitrarily many slightly-polydisperse components. An explicit solution is approximated for hard spheres.
A new Monte Carlo approach is proposed to investigate the fluid-solid phase transition of the polydisperse system. By using the extended ensemble, a reversible path was constructed to link the monodisperse and corresponding polydisperse system. Once the fluid-solid coexistence point of the monodisperse system is known, the fluid-solid coexistence point of the polydisperse system can be obtained from the simulation. The validity of the method is checked by the simulation of the fluid-solid phase transition of a size-polydisperse hard sphere colloid. The results are in agreement with the previou…
Density functional theory is used to study binary colloidal fluids consisting of hard spheres and thin platelets in their bulk and near a planar hard wall. This system exhibits liquid-liquid coexistence of a phase that is rich in spheres (poor in platelets) and a phase that is poor in spheres (rich in platelets). For the mixture near a planar hard wall, we find that the phase rich in spheres wets the wall completely upon approaching the liquid demixing binodal from the sphere-poor phase, provided the concentration of the platelets is smaller than a threshold value which marks a first-order wet…
We report the observation of the homogenous nucleation of crystals in a dense layer of steel spheres confined between two horizontal plates vibrated vertically. Above a critical vibration amplitude, two-layer crystals with square symmetry were found to coexist in steady state with a surrounding granular liquid. By analogy to equilibrium hard sphere systems, the phase behavior can be explained through entropy maximization. However, dramatic non-equilibrium effects are present, including a significant difference in the granular temperatures of the two phases.
We present a systematic study of the effect of the ion pairing on the gas-liquid phase transition of hard-core 1:1 electrolyte models. We study a class of dipolar dimer models that depend on a parameter R_c, the maximum separation between the ions that compose the dimer. This parameter can vary from sigma_{+/-} that corresponds to the tightly tethered dipolar dimer model, to R_c --> infinity, that corresponds to the Stillinger-Lovett description of the free ion system. The coexistence curve and critical point parameters are obtained as a function of R_c by grand canonical Monte Carlo technique…
We report the grand-canonical solution of a ternary mixture of discrete hard spheres defined on a Husimi lattice built with cubes, which provides a mean-field approximation for this system on the cubic lattice. The mixture is composed by point-like particles (0NN) and particles which exclude up to their first (1NN) and second neighbors (2NN), with activities $z_0$, $z_1$ and $z_2$, respectively. Our solution reveals a very rich thermodynamic behavior, with two solid phases associated with the ordering of 1NN ($S1$) or 2NN particles ($S2$), and two fluid phases, being one regular ($RF$) and the…
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we systematically investigate the effect of particle size distribution on the phase behaviour of polydisperse hard disks. Compared with the commonly used Gaussian-like polydisperse hard disks [Commun. Phys. 2, 70 (2019)], we find that the phase behaviour of polydisperse hard-disk systems with lognormal and triangle distributions are significantly different. In polydisperse hard-disk systems of lognormal distributions, although the phase diagram appears similar to that of Gaussian-like polydisperse hard disks, the re-entrant melting of hexatic or solid phase can n…
We examine the question of the criteria of the relaxation to the equilibrium in the hard disk dynamics. In the Event-Chain Monte Carlo, we check the displacement distributions which follows to the exponential law.
We perform extensive numerical simulations of a paradigmatic model glass former, the hard-sphere fluid with 10% polydispersity. We sample from the ensemble of trajectories with fixed observation time, whereby single trajectories are generated by event-driven molecular dynamics. We show that these trajectories can be characterized in terms of local structure, and we find a dynamical-structural (active-inactive) phase transition between two dynamical phases: one dominated by liquid-like trajectories with low degree of local order and one dominated by glassy-like trajectories with a high degree o…
We consider a ternary mixture of hard colloidal spheres, ideal polymer spheres, and rigid vanishingly thin needles, which model stretched polymers or colloidal rods. For this model we develop a geometry-based density functional theory, apply it to bulk fluid phases, and predict demixing phase behavior. In the case of no polymer-needle interactions, two-phase coexistence between colloid-rich and -poor phases is found. For hard needle-polymer interactions we predict rich phase diagrams, exhibiting three-phase coexistence, and reentrant demixing behavior.
We provide a quantitative analysis of all kinds of topological defects present in 2D passive and active repulsive disk systems. We show that the passage from the solid to the hexatic is driven by the unbinding of dislocations. Instead, although we see dissociation of disclinations as soon as the liquid phase appears, extended clusters of defects largely dominate below the solid-hexatic critical line. The latter percolate at the hexatic-liquid transition in continuous cases or within the coexistence region in discontinuous ones, and their form gets more ramified for increasing activity.
Values of the fifth virial coefficient, compressibility factors, and fluid-fluid coexistence curves of binary asymmetric nonadditive mixtures of hard disks are reported. The former correspond to a wide range of size ratios and positive nonadditivities and have been obtained through a standard Monte Carlo method for the computation of the corresponding cluster integrals. The compressibility factors as functions of density, derived from canonical Monte Carlo simulations, have been obtained for two values of the size ratio ($q=0.4$ and $q=0.5$), a value of the nonadditivity parameter $Δ=0.3$), an…
Starting from the ordered state, we investigate the short-time behaviour of the hard-disk model. For the positional order, we determine the critical exponents eta and z from the dynamic relaxation of the order parameter and the cumulant with molecular dynamics simulations. The results are compared with previous Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The bond orientational order is studied with MC dynamics.
The melting of a polydisperse hard disk system is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in the semigrand canonical ensemble. This is done in the context of possible continuous melting by a dislocation unbinding mechanism, as an extension of the 2D hard disk melting problem. We find that while there is pronounced fractionation in polydispersity, the apparent density-polydispersity gap does not increase in width, contrary to 3D polydisperse hard spheres. The point where the Young's modulus is low enough for the dislocation unbinding to occur moves with the apparent melting point, but stays wit…
We propose several versions of primitive models of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and develop a mean spherical approximation (MSA)-type theory for their description. RTIL is modeled as a two-component mixture of hard-sphere anions and flexible linear chain cations, represented by tangentially bonded hard spheres with the charge located on one of the terminal beads. The theoretical description of the model is carried out using the solution of the appropriately modified associative MSA (AMSA). Our solution reduces to solving one nonlinear algebraic equation for the Blum's screening param…
A system of smooth "frozen" Janus-type disks is studied. Such disks cannot rotate and are divided by their diameter into two sides of different inelasticities. Taking as a reference a system of colored elastic disks, we find differences in the behavior of the collisions once the anisotropy is included. A homogeneous state, akin to the homogeneous cooling state of granular gases, is seen to arise and the singular behavior of both the collisions and the precollisional correlations are highlighted.
We analyse the effect of a continuous spread of particle lengths on the phase behavior of rodlike particles, using the Onsager theory of hard rods. Our aim is to establish whether ``unusual'' effects such as isotropic-nematic-nematic (I-N-N) phase separation can occur even for length distributions with a single peak. We focus on the onset of I-N coexistence. For a log-normal distribution we find that a finite upper cutoff on rod lengths is required to make this problem well-posed. The cloud curve, which tracks the density at the onset of I-N coexistence as a function of the width of the length…
Large-scale computer simulations involving more than a million particles have been performed to study the melting transition in a two-dimensional hard disk fluid. The van der Waals loop previously observed in the pressure-density relationship of smaller simulations is shown to be an artifact of finite-size effects. Together with a detailed scaling analysis of the bond orientation order, the new results provide compelling evidence for the Halperin-Nelson-Young picture. Scaling analysis of the translational order also yields a lower bound for the melting density that is much higher than previous…
The exact canonical partition function of a hard disk system in a narrow quasi-one dimensional pore of given length and width is derived analytically in the thermodynamic limit. As a result the many body problem is reduced to solving two transcendental equations which can be easily done numerically. The longitudinal and transverse pressures in the whole density range are presented for three different pore widths. The transition from the solidlike zigzag to the liquidlike state is found to be quite sharp in the density scale but shows no genuine singularity. This transition is quantitatively de…
As a result of the competition between self-propulsion and excluded volume interactions, purely repulsive self-propelled spherical particles undergo a motility-induced phase separation (MIPS). We carry out a systematic computational study, considering several interaction potentials, systems confined by hard walls or with periodic boundary conditions, and different initial protocols. This approach allows us to identify that, despite its non-equilibrium nature, the equations of state of Active Brownian Particles (ABP) across MIPS verify the characteristic properties of first-order liquid-gas pha…
The phase behavior of the Baxter adhesive hard sphere fluid has been determined using specialized Monte Carlo simulations. We give a detailed account of the techniques used and present data for the fluid-fluid coexistence curve as well as parametrized fits for the supercritical equation of state and the percolation threshold. These properties are compared with the existing results of Percus-Yevick theory for this system.
We calculate for the first time the full phase-diagram of an asymmetric non-additive hard-sphere mixture. The non-additivity strongly affects the crystallization and the fluid-fluid phase-separation. The global topology of the phase-diagram is controlled by an effective size-ratio y_{eff}, while the fluid-solid coexistence scales with the depth of the effective potential well.
We investigate numerically the applicability of dynamic facilitation (DF) theory for glass-forming binary hard disk systems where supercompression is controlled by pressure. By using novel efficient algorithms for hard disks, we are able to generate equilibrium supercompressed states in an additive non-equimolar binary mixture, where micro-crystallization and size segregation do not emerge at high average packing fractions. Above an onset pressure where collective heterogeneous relaxation sets in, we find that relaxation times are well described by a "parabolic law" with pressure. We identify …
We simulate the tapping of a bed of hard disks in a rectangular box by using a pseudo dynamic algorithm. In these simulations, arches are unambiguously defined and we can analyze their properties as a function of the tapping amplitud. We find that an order--disorder transition occurs within a narrow range of tapping amplitudes as it has been seen by others. Arches are always present in the system althought they exhibit regular shapes in the ordered regime. Interestingly, an increase in the number of arches does not always correspond to a reduction in the packing fraction. This is in contrast w…
A simple equation of state for hard disks on the hyperbolic plane is proposed. It yields the exact second virial coefficient and contains a pole at the highest possible packing. A comparison with another very recent theoretical proposal and simulation data is presented.
We report large-scale computer simulations of the hard-disk system at high densities in the region of the melting transition. Our simulations reproduce the equation of state, previously obtained using the event-chain Monte Carlo algorithm, with a massively parallel implementation of the local Monte Carlo method and with event-driven molecular dynamics. We analyze the relative performance of these simulation methods to sample configuration space and approach equilibrium. Our results confirm the first-order nature of the melting phase transition in hard disks. Phase coexistence is visualized for…
The hard-disk problem, the statics and the dynamics of equal two-dimensional hard spheres in a periodic box, has had a profound influence on statistical and computational physics. Markov-chain Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics were first discussed for this model. Here we reformulate hard-disk Monte Carlo algorithms in terms of another classic problem, namely the sampling from a polytope. Local Markov-chain Monte Carlo, as proposed by Metropolis et al. in 1953, appears as a sequence of random walks in high-dimensional polytopes, while the moves of the more powerful event-chain algorithm corres…
A simulation is performed aiming at checking the existence of a well defined stationary state for a two dimensional system of driven hard disks when energy dissipation takes place at the system boundaries and no bulk impurities are present
Because of long-wavelength fluctuations, the nature of solids and phase transitions in 2D are different from those in 3D systems, and have been heavily debated in past decades, in which the focus was on the existence of hexatic phase. Here, by using large scale computer simulations, we investigate the melting transition in 2D systems of polydisperse hard disks. We find that, with increasing the particle size polydispersity, the melting transition can be qualitatively changed from the recently proposed two-stage process to the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young scenario with significantl…
The phase diagram of the attractive hard-core Yukawa fluid derived previously [M. Robles and M. López de Haro, J. Phys. Chem. C 111, 15957 (2007)] is used to obtain the liquid-vapor coexistence curve of real water. To this end, the value of the inverse range parameter of the intermolecular potential in the Yukawa fluid is fixed so that the ratio of the density at the critical point to the liquid density at the triple point in this model coincides with the same ratio in water. Subsequently, a (relatively simple) nonlinear rescaling of the temperature is performed which allows one to obtain the …
A proposal to link the equation of state of a monocomponent hard-disk fluid to the equation of state of a polydisperse hard-disk mixture is presented. Event-driven molecular dynamics simulations are performed to obtain data for the compressibility factor of the monocomponent fluid and of 26 polydisperse mixtures with different size distributions. Those data are used to assess the proposal and to infer the values of the compressibility factor of the monocomponent hard-disk fluid in the metastable region from those of mixtures in the high-density region. The collapse of the curves for the differ…
The question of whether the known virial coefficients are enough to determine the packing fraction $η_\infty$ at which the fluid equation of state of a hard-sphere fluid diverges is addressed. It is found that the information derived from the direct Padé approximants to the compressibility factor constructed with the virial coefficients is inconclusive. An alternative approach is proposed which makes use of the same virial coefficients and of the equation of state in a form where the packing fraction is explicitly given as a function of the pressure. The results of this approach both for hard-…
Virial coefficients for the two-dimensional hard-disk fluid, when expressed in powers of density relative to maximum close packing, lead to an accurate closed equation-of-state for the equilibrium fluid, analogous to that recently found for hard spheres. The 2D series also converges for all densities up to a negative pole at close packing density. The virial pressure begins to deviate from the thermodynamic fluid in the approach to the ordering transition.
We establish the complete phase diagram of self-propelled hard disks in two spatial dimensions from the analysis of the equation of state and the statistics of local order parameters. The equilibrium melting scenario is maintained at small activities, with coexistence between active liquid and hexatic order, followed by a proper hexatic phase and a further transition to an active solid. As activity increases, the emergence of hexatic and solid order is shifted towards higher densities. Above a critical activity and for a certain range of packing fractions, the system undergoes MIPS and demixes…
We investigate the positional order of the two-dimensional hard disk model with short-time dynamics and equilibrium simulations. The melting density and the critical exponents z and eta are determined. Our results rule out a phase transition as predicted by the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory as well as a first-order transition.
A detailed analysis of two different theoretical equations of state for a binary mixture of additive hard disks [C. Barrio and J. R. Solana, Phys. Rev. E 63, 011201 (2001); A. Santos, S. B. Yuste and M. Lopez de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)], including their comparison with Monte Carlo results, is carried out. It is found that both proposals, which require the equation of state of the single component system as input, lead to comparable accuracy when the same input is used in both, but the one advocated by Santos et al. is simpler and complies with the exact limit in which the small disks are…
We report Monte Carlo results for the two-dimensional hard disk system in the transition region. Simulations were performed in the NVT ensemble with up to 1024^2 disks. The scaling behaviour of the positional and bond-orientational order parameter as well as the positional correlation length prove the existence of a hexatic phase as predicted by the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory. The analysis of the pressure shows that this phase is outside a possible first-order transition.
We consider classical hard-core particles moving on two parallel chains in the same direction. An interaction between the channels is included via the hopping rates. For a ring, the stationary state has a product form. For the case of coupling to two reservoirs, it is investigated analytically and numerically. In addition to the known one-channel phases, two new regions are found, in particular the one, where the total density is fixed, but the filling of the individual chains changes back and forth, with a preference for strongly different densities. The corresponding probability distribution…
The process of equilibration of a colliding hard-disks system is studied in the framework of classical mechanic. The method consists of dividing the nonequilibrium system into the interacting subsystems; the evolution one of these subsystems is analyzed employing generalized Lagrange and Liouville equations. The subsystem-subsystem interaction force is considered as an evolution parameter. The mechanism by which its system equilibrates is described.
We report molecular dynamics results for the contact values of the radial distribution functions of binary additive mixtures of hard disks. The simulation data are compared with theoretical predictions from expressions proposed by Jenkins and Mancini [J. Appl. Mech. \textbf{54}, 27 (1987)] and Santos et al. [J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{117}, 5785 (2002)]. Both theories agree quantitatively within a very small margin, which renders the former still a very useful and simple tool to work with. The latter (higher-order and self-consistent) theory provides a small qualitative correction for low densitie…
We report Monte Carlo results for the two-dimensional hard disk system. Simulations were performed in the NVT ensemble with up to 65536 disks, using a new updating scheme. We analyze the bond orientational order parameter and correlation length in the isotropic phase and the scaling behaviour of the bond orientational order parameter in the transition region. The data are consistent with predictions of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory, while a first-order phase transition is unlikely and a one-stage continuous transition can be ruled out.
While uniform temperature has no effect on equilibrium properties of hard-core systems, its gradient might substantially change their behaviour. In particular, in hard-disk system subject to temperature difference $ΔT$ disks are repelled from the hot boundary of the system and accumulate at the cold one. Using event-driven molecular dynamics simulations we show that for sufficiently large $ΔT$ or coverage ratio $ρ^*$, crystal forms at the cold boundary. In this spatially inhomogeneous system a significant decrease of diffusivity of disks clearly marks the stationary interface between liquid an…
We demonstrate that there is no ideal glass transition in a binary hard-disk mixture by explicitly constructing an exponential number of jammed packings with densities spanning the spectrum from the accepted ``amorphous'' glassy state to the phase-separated crystal. Thus the configurational entropy cannot be zero for an ideal amorphous glass, presumed distinct from the crystal in numerous theoretical and numerical estimates in the literature. This objection parallels our previous critique of the idea that there is a most-dense random (close) packing for hard spheres [Torquato et al, Phys. Rev.…
A closed virial equation-of-state for the low density fluid phase of hard disks is obtained from the known virial coefficients. The equation exhibits 6-figure accuracy for the thermodynamic (MD) pressure up to the reduced number density ~ 0.4 Interpolation of the discrepancy at higher densities indicates a higher-order thermodynamic phase transition at the extensive-intensive free-volume percolation transition previously located by Hoover et al. (JCP 70 1837 1979)
We study the polydisperse Baxter model of sticky hard spheres (SHS) in the modified Mean Spherical Approximation (mMSA). This closure is known to be the zero-order approximation (C0) of the Percus-Yevick (PY) closure in a density expansion. The simplicity of the closure allows a full analytical study of the model. In particular we study stability boundaries, the percolation threshold, and the gas-liquid coexistence curves. Various possible sub-cases of the model are treated in details. Although the detailed behavior depends upon the particularly chosen case, we find that, in general, polydispe…
By using the Enskog-Boltzmann approach, we study the steady-state dynamics of a granular discorectangle placed in a two-dimensional bath of thermalized hard disks. Hard core collisions are assumed elastic between disks and inelastic between the discorectangle and the disks, with a normal restitution coefficient $α<1$. Assuming a Gaussian ansatz for the probability distribution functions, we obtain analytical expressions for the granular temperatures. We show the absence of equipartition and investigate both the role of the anisotropy of the discorectangle and of the relative ratio of the bath …
