The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The two coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.
It has been shown by Stell [J. Stat. Phys. 63, 1203 (1991)] that at low temperature monodisperse sticky spheres collapse to form coexisting close-packed solid and infinitely dilute gases. We show that polydisperse sticky spheres also collapse and calculate the collapse temperature. The polydisperse spheres separate into fractions with narrower polydispersities which can then solidify. This is the first example of a single-peaked polydisperse mixture phase separating. It implies that a mixture of polydisperse large hard spheres with much smaller hard spheres does not show fluid--fluid coexisten…
Polydisperse mixtures are those in which components with a whole range of sizes are present. It is shown that the fluid phase of polydisperse hard spheres is thermodynamically unstable unless the density of large spheres decreases at least exponentially as their size increases. The instability is with respect to the large spheres crystallising out into multiple solid phases.
A new Monte Carlo approach is proposed to investigate the fluid-solid phase transition of the polydisperse system. By using the extended ensemble, a reversible path was constructed to link the monodisperse and corresponding polydisperse system. The fluid - crystal equilibria of polydisperse mixtures of hard spheres have been studied by computer simulation of the solid phase and using an accurate equation of state for the fluid. We use specialized Monte Carlo simulation methods and moment free energy calculations to provide conclusive evidence that dense polydisperse spheres at equilibrium demix into coexisting fcc phases, with more phases appearing as the spread of diameters increases. We manage to track up to four coexisting phases. Each of these is fractionated: it contains a narrower distribution of particle sizes than is present in the system overall. The structure of polydisperse hard sphere fluids, in the presence of a wall, is studied by the Rosenfeld density functional theory. Within this approach, the local excess free energy depends on only four combinations of the full set of density fields. The case of continuous polydispersity thereby becomes tractable. We predict, generically, an oscillatory size segregation close to the wall, and connect this, by a perturbation theory for narrow distributions, with the reversible work for changing the size of one particle in a monodisperse reference fluid.
The effect of polydispersity on the freezing transition of hard spheres is examined within a moment description. At low polydispersities a single fluid-to-crystal transition is recovered. With increasing polydispersity we find a density above which the crystal melts back into an amorphous phase. The range of densities over which the crystalline phase is stable shrinks with increasing polydispersity until, at a certain level of polydispersity, the crystal disappears completely from the equilibrium phase diagram. A general Monte Carlo simulation method of calculating the elastic constants of polydisperse hard-sphere colloidal crystal was developed. The elastic constants of a size polydisperse hard sphere fcc crystal is calculated. The pressure and three elastic constants(C11, C12 and C44) increase significantly with the polydispersity. It was also found from extrapolation that there is a mechanical terminal polydispersity above which a fcc crystal will be mechanically unstable.

Standard algorithms for the numerical integration of the Langevin equation require that interactions are slowly varying during to the integration timestep. This in not the case for hard-body systems, where there is no clearcut between the correlation time of the noise and the timescale of the interactions. Starting from a short time approximation of the Smoluchowsky equation, we introduce an algorithm for the simulation of the overdamped Brownian dynamics of polydisperse hard-spheres in absence of hydrodynamics interactions and briefly discuss the extension to the case of external drifts.
We consider the consequences of keeping the total surface fixed for a polydisperse system of $N$ hard spheres. In contrast with a similar model (J. Zhang {\it et al.}, J. Chem. By extending the nonequilibrium potential refinement algorithm and lattice switch method to the semigrand ensemble, the semigrand potentials of the fcc and hcp structures of polydisperse hard-sphere crystals are calculated with the bias sampling scheme. The result shows that the fcc structure is more stable than the hcp structure for polydisperse hard-sphere crystals below the terminal polydispersity.
Hard spheres with a polydispersity above approximately 8% are shown to crystallise into two phase-separated solid phases. A polydispersity above 8% is too large to be tolerated by a single solid phase but phase separation produces two fractions with polydispersities sufficiently narrow to allow them to crystallise. It may not be possible to observe this in experiment due to the intervention of a glass transition.
An analytic derivation of the spinodal of a polydisperse mixture is presented. It holds for fluids whose excess free energy can be accurately described by a function of a few moments of the size distribution. We model the packing structure of a marginally jammed bulk ensemble of polydisperse spheres using an extended granocentric mode explicitly taking into account rattlers. This leads to a relation- ship between the characteristic parameters of the packing, such as the mean number of neighbors and the fraction of rattlers, and the radial distribution function g(r). We find excellent agreement between the model predictions for g(r) and packing simulations as well as experiments on jammed emulsion droplets. We study jammed configurations of hard spheres as a function of compression speed using an event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm. We find that during the compression, the pressure follows closely the metastable liquid branch until the system gets arrested into a glass state as the relaxation time exceeds the compression speed. Further compression yields a jammed configuration that can be regarded as the infinite pressure configuration of that glass state. Consequently, we find that the density of jammed packings varies from 0.638 to 0.658 for polydisperse hard spheres and from 0.635 to 0.6…

We examine the thermodynamic limit of fluids of hard core particles that are polydisperse in size and shape. In addition, particles may interact magnetically. Free energy of such systems is a random variable because it depends on the choice of particles. We prove that the thermodynamic limit exists with probability 1, and is independent of the choice of particles. Our proof applies to polydisperse hard-sphere fluids, colloids and ferrofluids. The existence of a thermodynamic limit implies system shape and size independence of thermodynamic properties of a system.
We consider the effect of intermolecular interactions on the optimal size-distribution of $N$ hard spheres that occupy a fixed total volume. When we minimize the free-energy of this system, within the Percus-Yevick approximation, we find that no solution exists beyond a quite low threshold ($η\thickapprox 0.260$). Two-particle correlation function of the relative position of pores of different radii in the medium space was calculated and detailed analysis was carried out. Microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations of a polydisperse soft-spheres model for liquids and colloids have been performed for very large polydispersity, in the region where a phase-separation is known to occur when the system (or part of it) solidifies. By studying samples of different sizes, from N=256 to N=864, we focus on the nature of the two distinct coexisting phases. Measurements of crystalline order in particles of different size reveal that the solid phase segregates between a crystalline solid with cubic symmetry and a disordered phase. This phenomenon is termed fractionation.

We study the size-topology relations in random packings of dry adhesive polydisperse microspheres with Gaussian and lognormal size distributions through a geometric tessellation. We find that the dependence of the neighbour number on the centric particle size is always quasilinear, independent of the size distribution, the size span or interparticle adhesion.
