We use computer simulations to investigate the extended phase diagram of a supercooled liquid linearly coupled to a quenched reference configuration. An extensive finite-size scaling analysis demonstrates the existence of a random-field Ising model (RFIM) critical point and of a first-order transition line, in agreement with recent field-theoretical approaches. The dynamics in the vicinity of this critical point resembles the peculiar activated scaling of RFIM-like systems, and the overlap autocorrelation displays a logarithmic stretching. Our study demonstrates RFIM criticality in the thermodynamic limit for a three-dimensional supercooled liquids at equilibrium.
We present a method derived by cavity arguments to compute the spin-glass and higher-order susceptibilities in diluted mean-field spin-glass models. The divergence of the spin-glass susceptibility is associated to the existence of a non-zero solution of a homogeneous linear integral equation. Higher order susceptibilities, relevant for critical dynamics through the parameter exponent $λ$, can be expressed at criticality as integrals involving the critical eigenvector. The numerical evaluation of the corresponding analytic expressions is discussed. The method is illustrated in the context of th…
We define an ensemble of random Clifford quantum circuits whose output state undergoes an entanglement phase transition between two volume-law phases as a function of measurement rate. Our setup maps exactly the output state to the ground space of a spin glass model. We identify the entanglement phases using an order parameter that is accessible on a quantum chip. We locate the transition point and evaluate a critical exponent, revealing spin glass criticality. Our work establishes an exact statistical mechanics theory of an entanglement phase transition.
We introduce an approach to derive an effective scalar field theory for the glass transition; the fluctuating field is the overlap between equilibrium configurations. We apply it to the case of constrained liquids for which the introduction of a conjugate source to the overlap field was predicted to lead to an equilibrium critical point. We show that the long-distance physics in the vicinity of this critical point is in the same universality class as that of a paradigmatic disordered model: the random-field Ising model. The quenched disorder is provided here by a reference equilibrium liquid c…
Finite-dimensional signatures of spinodal criticality are notoriously difficult to come by. The dynamical transition of glass-forming liquids, first described by mode-coupling theory, is a spinodal instability preempted by thermally activated processes that also limit how close the instability can be approached. We combine numerical tools to directly observe vestiges of the spinodal criticality in finite-dimensional glass formers. We use the swap Monte Carlo algorithm to efficiently thermalise configurations beyond the mode-coupling crossover, and analyze their dynamics using a scheme to scree…
Learning with an artificial neural network encodes the system behavior in a feed-forward function with a number of parameters optimized by data-driven training. An open question is whether one can minimize the network complexity without loss of performance to reveal how and why it works. Here we investigate the learning of the phase transition in the Ising model and find that having two hidden neurons can be enough for an accurate prediction of critical temperature. We show that the networks learn the scaling dimension of the order parameter while being trained as a phase classifier, demonstra…
Zero-temperature criticality in a simple glass model

We study the emergence of critical dynamics in the steady shear rheology of fluidized soft glassy materials. Within a mesoscale elasto-plastic model accounting for a shear band instability, we show how an additional noise can induce a transition from phase separated to homogeneous flow, accompanied by critical-like fluctuations of the macroscopic shear rate. Both macroscopic quantities and fluctuations exhibit power law behaviors in the vicinity of this transition, consistent with previous experimental findings on vibrated granular media. Altogether, our results suggest a generic scenario for …
The free energy and the specific heat of the two-dimensional Gaussian random bond Ising model on a square lattice are found with high accuracy using graph expansion method. At low temperatures the specific heat reveals a zero-temperature criticality described by the power law $C\propto T^{1+α}$, with $α= 0.55(8)$. Interpretation of the free energy in terms of independent two-level excitations gives the density of states, that follows a novel power law $ρ(ε)\propto ε^α$ at low energies. An exact high-temperature series for this model up to the term $β^{29}$ is found. A proof that the density of…
We consider 2D random Ising ferromagnetic models, where quenched disorder is represented either by random local magnetic fields (Random Field Ising Model) or by a random distribution of interaction couplings (Random Bond Ising Model). In both cases we first perform zero- and finite-temperature Monte-Carlo simulations to determine how the critical temperature depends on the disorder parameter. We then focus on the reversal transition triggered by an external field, and study the associated Barkhausen noise. Our main result is that the critical exponents characterizing the power-law associated w…
Clusters and droplets of positive spins in the two-dimensional Ising model percolate at the Curie temperature in absence of external field. The percolative exponents coincide with the magnetic ones for droplets but not for clusters. We use integrable field theory to determine amplitude ratios which characterize the approach to criticality within these two universality classes of percolative critical behavior.
Using three-dimensional representation of confluent cell layers, we map the amorphous solid to fluid phase transition in active cell layers onto the two-dimensional (2D) site percolation universality class. Importantly, we unify two distinct, predominant, pathways associated with this transition; namely (i) cell-cell adhesion and (ii) active traction forces. For each pathway, we independently vary the corresponding control parameter and focus on the emergent mechanical stress patterns as the monolayer transitions from a glassy- to a fluid-like state. Through finite-size scaling analyses, our r…
We study the triangular-lattice Ising model with dipolar interactions, inspired by its realisation in artificial arrays of nanomagnets. We show that a classical spin-liquid forms at intermediate temperatures, and that its behaviour can be tuned by temperature and/or a small lattice distortion between a string Luttinger liquid and a domain-wall-network state. At low temperature there is a transition into a magnetically ordered phase, which can be first-order or continous with a crossover in the critical behaviour between Pokrovsky-Talapov and 2D-Ising universality. When the Pokrovsky-Talapov cr…
The criticality of the (2+1)-dimensional S=1 transverse-field Ising model is investigated with the numerical diagonalization method. The scaling behavior is improved by tuning the coupling-constant parameters; the S=1 spin model allows us to incorporate a variety of interactions such as the single-ion anisotropy and the biquadratic interactions. Simulating the clusters with N=6,8,...,20 spins, we estimate the critical indices as 1/ν=1.586(6) and η=0.034(4).
We consider thermal transport between two reservoirs coupled by a quantum Ising chain as a model for non-equilibrium physics induced in quantum-critical many-body systems. By deriving rate equations based on exact expressions for the quasiparticle pairs generated during the transport, we observe signatures of the underlying quantum phase transition in the steady-state energy current already at finite reservoir temperatures.
Here is the first part of the summary of my work on random Ising model using real-space renormalization group (RSRG), also known as a Migdal-Kadanoff one. This approximate renormalization scheme was applied to the analysis thermodynamic properties of the model, and of probabilistic properties of a pair correlator, which is a fluctuating object in disordered systems. Much attention has been devoted to water's metastable phase behavior, including polyamorphism (multiple amorphous solid phases), and the hypothesized liquid-liquid transition and associated critical point. However, the possible relationship between these phenomena remains incompletely understood. Using molecular dynamics simulations of the realistic TIP4P/2005 model, we found a striking signature of the liquid-liquid critical point in the structure of water glasses, manifested as a pronounced increase in long-range density fluctuations at pressures proximate to the critical pressure. By contra…
We consider the random field Ising model and show rigorously that the spin glass susceptibility at equilibrium is always bounded by the ferromagnetic susceptibility, and therefore that no spin glass phase can be present at equilibrium out of the ferromagnet critical line. When the magnetization is, however, fixed to values smaller than the equilibrium one, a glassy phase can exist, as we show explicitly on the Bethe lattice.
A theoretical model for the $Mn_{12}$ acetates is derived including a 'random field' effect arising from isomer effects in some families of host acetate materials. Estimates for the important energy scales are given. Phase boundaries are determined using a mean field approximation. Predictions for experiment are presented
We conjecture the existence of a relationship between frustration and the transition point at zero temperature of Ising spin glasses. The relation reveals that, in several Ising spin glass models, the concentration of ferromagnetic bonds is close to the critical concentration at zero temperature when the output of a function about frustration is equal to unity. The function is the derivative of the average number of frustrated plaquettes with respect to the average number of antiferromagnetic bonds. This relation is conjectured in Ising spin glasses with binary couplings on two-dimensional lat…
Plastic events in sheared glasses are considered an example of so-called avalanches, whose sizes obey a power-law probability distribution with the avalanche critical exponent $τ$. Although mean-field theory predicts a universal value of this exponent, $τ_{\rm MF}=1.5$, numerical simulations have reported different values depending on the literature. Moreover, in the elastic regime, it has been noted that the critical exponent can be different from that in the steady state, and even criticality itself is a matter of debate. Because these confusingly varying results were reported under differen…
Nearest-neighbor-interaction Ising spin glasses are studied on three different hierarchical lattices, all of them belonging to the Wheatstone-Bridge family. It is shown that the spin-glass lower critical dimension in these lattices should be greater than 2.32. Finite-temperature spin-glass phases are found for a lattice of fractal dimension $D \approx 3.58$ (whose unit cell is obtained from a simple construction of a part of the cubic lattice), as well as for a lattice of fractal dimension close to five.
We consider the spatial correlation function of the two-dimensional Ising spin glass under out-equilibrium conditions. We pay special attention to the scaling limit reached upon approaching zero temperature. The field-theory of a non-interacting field makes a surprisingly good job at describing the spatial shape of the correlation function of the out-equilibrium Edwards-Anderson Ising model in two dimensions.
We investigate the ferromagnetic-glassy transitions which separate the low-temperature ferromagnetic and spin-glass phases in the temperature-disorder phase diagram of three-dimensional Ising spin-glass models. For this purpose, we consider the cubic-lattice +-J (Edwards-Anderson) Ising model with bond distribution $P(J) = p δ(J - 1) + (1-p) δ(J + 1)$, and present a numerical Monte Carlo study of the critical behavior along the line that marks the onset of ferromagnetism. The finite-size scaling analysis of the Monte Carlo data shows that the ferromagnetic-glassy transition line is slightly re…
We analyze the limits inherent to the inverse reconstruction of a pairwise Ising spin glass based on susceptibility propagation. We establish the conditions under which the susceptibility propagation algorithm is able to reconstruct the characteristics of the network given first- and second-order local observables, evaluate eventual errors due to various types of noise in the originally observed data, and discuss the scaling of the problem with the number of degrees of freedom.
Extensive simulations are made of the spin glass susceptibility and correlation length in five dimension Ising Spin Glasses (ISGs) with Gaussian and bimodal interaction distributions. Once the transition temperature is accurately established using a standard criterion, critical exponents and correction terms can be readily estimated by extrapolating measurements made in the thermodynamic limit regime. The data show that the critical exponents of the susceptibility $γ$ and of the correlation length $ν$ depend on the form of the interaction distribution. This observation implies that quite gener…
The one-dimensional long-range Ising spin glass provides useful insights into the properties of finite dimensional spin glasses with short-range interactions. The defect energy renormalization group equations derived for it by Kotliar, Anderson and Stein have been re-examined and a new fixed point has been found. The fixed points which have previously been studied are found to be inappropriate. It is shown that the renormalization group equations themselves directly imply that the spin glass phase is replica symmetric, in agreement with droplet model expectations, when the range exponent $σ$ l…
The ferromagnetic Ising spins are modeled on a recursive lattice constructed from random-angled rhombus units with stochastic configurations, to study the magnetic properties of the bulk Fe-based metallic glass. The integration of spins on the structural glass model well represents the magnetic moments in the glassy metal. The model is exactly solved by the recursive calculation technique. The magnetization of the amorphous Ising spins, i.e. the glassy metallic magnet is investigated by our modeling and calculation on a theoretical base. The results show that the glassy metallic magnets has a …
We present a numerical study on an interacting monomer-dimer model with nearest neighbor repulsion on a square lattice, which possesses two symmetric absorbing states. The model is observed to exhibit two nearby continuous transitions: the $Z_2$ symmetry-breaking order-disorder transition and the absorbing transition with directed percolation criticality. We find that the symmetry-breaking transition shows a non-Ising critical behavior, and that the absorbing phase becomes critical, in the sense that the critical decay of the dimer density observed at the absorbing transition persists even wit…

The critical behavior of a family of fully connected mean-field models with quenched disorder, the $M-p$ Ising spin glass, is analyzed, displaying a crossover between a continuous and a random first order phase transition as a control parameter is tuned. Due to its microscopic properties the model is straightforwardly extendable to finite dimensions in any geometry.
We study the challenging thermal phase transition to stripe order in the frustrated square-lattice Ising model with couplings J1<0 (nearest-neighbor, ferromagnetic) and J2>0 (second-neighbor, antiferromagnetic) for g=J2/|J1|>1/2. Using Monte Carlo simulations and known analytical results, we demonstrate Ashkin-Teller criticality for g>= g*, i.e., the critical exponents vary continuously between those of the 4-state Potts model at g=g* and the Ising model for g -> infinity. Thus, stripe transitions offer a route to realizing a related class of conformal field theories with conformal charge c=1 …
Recent numerical simulations indicate that several different equilibrium glass transitions may be characterized by diverging correlation lengths, and that these divergences are described by a non-mean-field, Ising-like, critical exponent. I argue here that a minimal model of polydisperse, hard-core particles can be reformulated in terms of Ising spins. The two spin states correspond, at high pressure, to two compact, local topologies -- "solidlike" and "liquidlike" -- whose average volumes per particle are nearly identical for strongly frustrated, glass forming systems. The critical correlatio…
