In this paper, we analytically study the critical exponents and universal amplitudes of the thermodynamic curvatures such as the intrinsic and extrinsic curvature at the critical point of the small-large black hole phase transition for the charged AdS black holes. At the critical point, it is found that the normalized intrinsic curvature $R_N$ and extrinsic curvature $K_N$ has critical exponents 2 and 1, respectively. Based on them, the universal amplitudes $R_Nt^2$ and $K_Nt$ are calculated with the temperature parameter $t=T/T_c-1$ where $T_c$ the critical value of the temperature. Near the critical point, we find that the critical amplitude of $R_Nt^2$ and $K_Nt$ is $-\frac{1}{2}$ when $t\rightarrow0^+$, whereas $R_Nt^2\approx -\frac{1}{8}$ and $K_Nt\approx-\frac{1}{4}$ in the limit $t\rightarrow0^-$. These results not only hold for the four dimensional charged AdS black hole, but also for the higher dimensional cases. Therefore, such universal properties will cast new insight into the thermodynamic geometries and black hole phase transitions.
In lower dimensions, charged AdS black holes in an extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as the thermodynamic pressure, are typically absent of liquid/gas phase transitions. We investigate the criticality of lower dimensional charged, dilatonic, asymptotically AdS (CDAdS$_d$) black holes generated from consistent truncations of RNAdS$_{d+2}$ black objects. We demonstrate that CDAdS$_{d}$ black holes in $d<4$ can exhibit rich van der Waals behavior and confirm that the associated critical exponents match those expected from mean field theory.
Treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume, we reconsider the critical behaviour of charged AdS black holes. We complete the analogy of this system with the liquid-gas system and study its critical point, which occurs at the point of divergence of specific heat at constant pressure. We calculate the critical exponents and show that they coincide with those of the Van der Waals system.
We reconsider the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting where both the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the gravitational Newton constant $G$ are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both $Λ$ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of the charged AdS black holes, in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of free…
We consider a massive black hole in four dimensional AdS space and study the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of the black hole. We consider thermal fluctuations as logarithmic correction terms in the entropy. We analyse the effect of logarithmic correction on thermodynamics potentials like Helmholtz and Gibbs which are found decreasing functions. We study critical points and stability and find that presence of logarithmic correction is necessary to have stable phase and critical point.
In this paper, we investigate the $P-V$ criticality and phase transition of charged accelerating AdS black holes in the extended thermodynamic phase space in analogy between black hole system and Van der Waals liquid-gas system, where the cosmological constant $Λ$ is treated as a thermodynamical variable interpreted as dynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity is the thermodynamic volume of the black holes. When the electric charge vanishes, we find that no $P-V$ criticality will appear but the Hawking-Page like phase transition will be present, just as what Schwarzschild-AdS black holes beh…
We analyze the extended phase space thermodynamics of Kiselev black hole introducing a central charge and allowing the gravitational constant to vary. We also discuss the relation between the chemical potential and the size of the black hole, besides the new description of phase transitions. We obtain as a conclusion that the universality of the central charge does not remain valid in general.
In this paper, we consider dyonic charged AdS black hole which is holographic dual of a van der Waals fluid. We use logarithmic corrected entropy and study thermodynamics of the black hole and show that holographic picture is still valid. Critical behaviors and stability also discussed. Logarithmic corrections arises due to thermal fluctuations which are important when size of black hole be small. So, thermal fluctuations interpreted as quantum effect. It means that we can see quantum effect of a black hole which is a gravitational system.
We focus on the study of the exact solution corresponding to charged AdS black holes surrounded by quintessence with a cloud of strings present in higher dimensional spacetime. We then investigate its corresponding thermodynamic criticality in the extended phase space and show that the spacetime dimension has no effect on the existence of small/large phase transition for such black holes. The heat capacity is evaluated and the geothermodynamics of Quevedo analyzed for different spacetime dimensions with the cloud of strings and quintessence parameters. We calculate the critical exponents descr…
We consider the Gauss-Bonnet corrected Bardeen black hole solution in 4-D AdS space-time. The solution is obtained by the limiting procedure adopted by Glavan and Lin in 4-D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The general form of first law of black hole thermodynamics is utilized to calculate various thermodynamics variables. The solution exhibit P-v criticality and belong to the universality class of van-der Waals fluid. The effect of Gauss-Bonnet coupling is investigated on critical parameters and inversion temperature.
In black hole thermodynamics, it has been observed that AdS black holes behave as van der Waals system if one interprets the cosmological constant as a pressure term. Also the critical exponents for the phase transition of AdS black holes and the van der Waals systems are same. Till now this type of analysis is done by two steps. In the first step one shows that a particular metric allows phase transition and in the second step, using this information, one calculates the exponents. Here, we present a different approach based on two universal inputs (the general forms of the Smarr formula and t…
A holographic description on antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) induced by magnetic field and the criticality in the vicinity of quantum critical point (QCP) have been investigated numerically recently. In this paper, we show that the properties of QPT in this holographic model are governed by a CFT dual to the emergent AdS$_2$ in the IR region, which confirms that the dual boundary theory is a strong coupling theory with dynamic exponent $z=2$ and logarithmic corrections appear. We also compare them with the results from Hertz model by solving RG equation at its upper critical d…
We study the black hole thermodynamics in the presence of a string cloud matter distribution, considering a work term due to a variable cosmological "constant" in arbitrary dimensions. Then, we explore the criticality of the system and the behavior of the black hole as a heat engine in the context of general relativity and metric f(R) gravity.
In this paper, taking in to account Brans-Dick theory, we investigate thermodynamic behavior of charged black hole solutions. We study the analogy of the black hole solution with the Van der Waals liquid-gas system in the extended phase space by considering the cosmological constant as dynamical pressure. We obtain critical values of thermodynamic coordinates and plot $P-r_{+}$ and $G-T$ diagrams to study the phase transition.
We study the hololgraphic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravitational thermodynamics of AdS black holes can be extended by allowing for variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant. In the dual CFT this corresponds to including the central charge $C$ and its chemical potential $μ$ as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables, in addition to the standard pairs: temperature vs. entropy $(T,S)$, electric potential vs. charge $(\tilde Φ, \tilde Q)$ and field theory press…
We show that the quantum critical point (QCP) between a diffusive metal and ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) phases in the SYK chain has a gravitational description corresponding to the double-trace deformation in an AdS$_2$ chain. Specifically, by studying a double-trace deformation of a $Z_2$ scalar in an AdS$_2$ chain where the $Z_2$ scalar is dual to the order parameter in the SYK chain, we find that the susceptibility and renormalization group equation describing the QCP in the SYK chain can be exactly reproduced in the holographic model. Our results suggest that the infrared geometry…
We suggest a new thermodynamic curvature, constructed via adiabatic compressibility, for examining the internal microstructure of charged black holes in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) background. We analyze the microscopic properties of small-large phase transition of black holes with pressure and volume as the fluctuation variables. We observe that strong repulsive interactions dominate among the micro-structures of near extremal small black holes, and the thermodynamic curvature diverges to positive infinity for the extremal black holes. At the critical point, however, thermodynamic curvature diver…
We study thermodynamics of a charged AdS black hole in the special $f(R)$ correction with the constant Ricci scalar curvature. Our results show that the the $f(R)$ correction influences the Gibbs free energy and the phase transition of system. The ratio $ρ_c$ occurred at the critical point increases monotonically with the derivative term $f'(R_0)$. We also disclose that the critical exponents are the same as those of the liquid-gas phase transition in the Van der Waals model, which does not depend on the $f(R)$ correction considered here.
In this Letter, we investigate the effects of dark energy on $P-V$ criticality of charged AdS black holes by considering the case of the RN-AdS black holes surrounded by quintessence. By treating the cosmological constant as thermodynamic pressure, we study its thermodynamics in the extended phase space. It is shown that quintessence dark energy does not affect the existence of small/large black hole phase transition. For the case $ω_q=-2/3$ we derive analytic expressions of critical physical quantities, while for cases $ω_q\neq-2/3$ we appeal to numerical method for help. It is shown that qui…
To provide an analytic verification of the nature of phase transition at the critical point of $P-V$ criticality, the original expressions of Ehrenfest equations have been introduced directly. By treating the cosmological constant and its conjugate quantity as thermodynamic pressure and volume respectively, we carry out analytical check of classical Ehrenfest equations. To show that our approach is universal, we investigate not only higher-dimensional charged AdS black holes, but also rotating AdS black holes. Not only are the examples of Einstein gravity shown, but also the example of modifie…
We investigate the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of a Lovelock-AdS black hole. Taking the first order logarithmic correction term in entropy we analyze the thermodynamic potentials like Helmholtz free energy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy. We find that all the thermodynamic potentials are decreasing functions of correction coefficient $α$. We also examined this correction coefficient tmust be positive by analysing $P-V$ diagram. Further we study the P-V criticality and stability and find that presence of logarithmic correction in it is necessary to have critical points …
We study the equal area law and charge-electric potential criticality for the charged Anti-de Sitter black holes. Considering that the black hole charge is a double-valued function of the electric potential, we investigate the equal area law in detail. We find that the equal area law has two different expressions when the thermodynamic quantities are near the critical point and far from the critical point. For these two different cases, we obtain the analytical coexistence curve for the low and high electric potential black hole phases by using these two expressions of the equal area law. Base…
The phase transition and critical behaviours of charged AdS black holes in $f(R)$ gravity with a conformally invariant Maxwell (CIM) source and constant curvature are further investigated. As a highlight, this research is carried out by employing new state parameters $(T,Q,Φ)$ and contributes to deeper understanding the thermodynamics and phase structure of black holes. Our analyses manifest that the charged $f(R)$-CIM AdS black hole undergoes a first order small-large black hole phase transition, and the critical behaviours qualitatively behave like a Van der Waals liquid-vapor system. Howeve…
According to more recent AdS/CFT interpretation \cite{Karch:2015rpa}, in which varying cosmological constant $Λ$ in the bulk corresponds to varying the curvature radius governing the space on which the field theory resides, we study the criticality of thermodynamic curvatures for thermal boundary conformal field theories (CFT) that are dual to $d$-dimensional charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes, embedded in $D$-dimensional M-theory/superstring inspired models having $AdS_{d}\times \mathbb{S}^{d+k}$ spacetime with $D=2d+k$. Analogous with criticality features acquired for charged AdS black…
We investigate the ratios of critical physical quantities related to the $T-S$ criticality of charged AdS black holes. It is shown that the ratio $\frac{T_cS_c}{Q_c}$ is universal while $\frac{T_cr_c}{Q_c}$ is not. This finding is quite interesting considering the former observation that both the $T-S$ graph and $T-r_+$ graph exhibit reverse van der Waals behavior. It is also worth noting that the value of $\frac{T_cS_c}{Q_c}$ differs from that of $\frac{P_cv_c}{T_c}$ for $P-V$ criticality. Moreover, we discuss universal ratios for the $P-V$ criticality and $Q-Φ$ criticality. We successfully i…
We study Hawking radiation and $P-v$ criticality of charged dynamical (Vaidya) black hole in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. By investigating the near horizon properties of scalar field, we derive Hawking temperature of dynamical charged (Vaidya) AdS black hole. Based on this result, by regarding the cosmological constant as the thermodynamic pressure, we investigate the analogy between the charged dynamical (Vaidya) AdS black holes in the ensemble with the fixed charge and van der Waals liquid-gas system in detail, including equation of state, $P-v$ diagram, critical point, heat capacities and cr…
We show that the inclusion of higher curvature terms in the gravitational action can lead to phase transitions and critical behaviour for charged black branes. The higher curvature terms considered here belong to the recently constructed generalized quasi-topological class [ArXiv: 1703.01631], which possess a number of interesting properties, such as being ghost-free on constant curvature backgrounds and non-trivial in four dimensions. We show that critical behaviour is a generic feature of the black branes in all dimensions $d \ge 4$, and contextualize the results with a review of the propert…
Considering de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley theory of massive gravity coupled with (ghost free) higher curvature terms arisen from the Lovelock Lagrangian, we obtain charged AdS black hole solutions in diverse dimensions. We compute thermodynamic quantities in the extended phase space by considering the variations of the negative cosmological constant, Lovelock coefficients ($α_{i}$) and massive couplings ($c_{i}$), and prove that such variations is necessary for satisfying the extended first law of thermodynamics as well as associated Smarr formula. In addition, by performing a comprehensive thermal…
AdS black holes show richer transition behaviors in extended phase space by assuming the cosmological constant and its conjugate quantity to behave like thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. We study the extended thermodynamics of charged dilatonic AdS black holes in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories that can be embedded in gauged supergravities in various dimensions. We find that the transition behaviors of higher dimensional dilatonic AdS black holes are different from the four dimensional counterparts, and new transition behaviors emerges in higher dimensions. First, t…
In this paper, we investigate the critical behavior of charged black holes of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in the presence of two Liouville-type potentials which make the solution asymptotically neither flat nor AdS and has a parameter $% Λ$ treated as a thermodynamic quantity that can vary. We obtain a Smarr-type relation for charged dilatonic black holes and find out that the volume is different from the geometrical volume. We study the analogy of the Van der Waals liquid-gas system with the charged dilatonic black hole system while we treat the black hole charge as a fixed external para…
In this paper we have studied the extended phase space thermodynamics in the canonical ensemble of black holes in massive gravity in AdS space. The black holes considered here belong to a theory of massive gravity where the graviton gain a mass due to Lorentz symmetry breaking. We have computed various thermodynamical quantities such as temperature, pressure, Gibbs free energy and specific heat capacity. The local and the global thermodynamical stability of the black holes are studied in detail. For a specific value of the parameter in the theory, the black holes undergo a first order phase tr…
We investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of AdS quasitopological black hole solutions in the context of extended thermodynamic phase space, in which the cosmological constant induces a pressure with a conjugate volume. We find that the third order exact quasitopological solution exhibits features consistent with the third order Lovelock solutions for positive quasitopological coupling, including multiple reentrant phase transitions and isolated critical points. For negative coupling we find the first instances of both reentrant phase transitions and thermodynamic singularities in five dimens…
We study the $P-V$ criticality and phase transition in the extended phase space of charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes in anti-de Sitter space, where the cosmological constant appears as a dynamical pressure of the system and its conjugate quantity is the thermodynamic volume of the black hole. The black holes can have a Ricci flat ($k=0$), spherical ($k=1$), or hyperbolic ($k=-1$) horizon. We find that for the Ricci flat and hyperbolic Gauss-Bonnet black holes, no $P-V$ criticality and phase transition appear, while for the black holes with a spherical horizon, even when the charge of the black …
AdS black holes exhibit van der Waals type phase transition. In the {\it extended} phase-space formalism, the critical exponents for any spacetime metric are identical to the standard ones. Motivated by this fact, we give a general expression for the Helmholtz free energy near the critical point which correctly reproduces these exponents. The idea is similar to the Landau model which gives a phenomenological description of the usual second order phase transition. Here two main inputs are taken into account for the analysis: (a) black holes should have van der Waals like isotherms and (b) free …
{We examine the critical behaviour i. e. $P-V$ criticality of conformal gravity~(CG) in an extended phase space in which the cosmological constant should be interpreted as a thermodynamic pressure and the corresponding conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume.} The main potential point of interest in CG is that there exists a {non-trivial} \emph{Rindler parameter ($a$)} in the {spacetime geometry. This geometric parameter has an important role to construct a model for gravity at large distances where the parameter "$a$" actually originates}. We also investigate the effect of the said param…
In this note, we consider the equations of motion for charged branes in AdS space and show that they can be cast into one-dimensional coupled Toda type. Then we solve the equations of motion to construct static charged AdS brane solutions which are invariant under translation along $p$ directions and have toroidal symmetry. The solutions are described by mass, charges and a dilaton coupling constant.
In this paper, we study $P-V$ criticality of Kerr-Newman $AdS$ black hole with a quintessence field. We calculate critical quantities and show that for the equation state parameter $ω= -\frac{1}{3}$, the obtained universal ratio ($\frac{P_{c}\upsilon_{c}}{T_{c}}$) is quite same as Kerr-Newman $AdS$ black hole without dark energy parameter. We investigate the influence of quintessence field $α$, equation state parameter $ω$ and angular momentum $J$ on the efficiency $η$. We find that $η$ is increased by increasing $J$ and $α$ and decreasing charge $Q$ of black hole. We show when $ω$ increases f…
In this paper, we have studied the thermodynamics of Gauss-Bonnet black holes in D-dimensional $AdS$ spacetime. Here, the cosmological constant ($Λ$), Newton's gravitational constant ($G$) and the Gauss-Bonnet parameter ($α$) are varied in the bulk, and a mixed first law is rewritten considering central charge ($C$) (of dual boundary conformal theory) and its conjugate variable utilising the gauge-gravity duality. A novel universal nature of central charge near the critical point of black hole phase transition in Einstein's gravity has been observed in \cite{mann1}. We observe that this univer…
We numerically construct charged boson stars in asymptotically AdS spacetime. We find an intricate phase diagram dominated by solutions whose main matter contribution are alternately provided by the scalar field or by the gauge field.
We investigate the extended phase space thermodynamics of nonsingular-AdS black holes minimally coupled to clouds of strings in which we consider the cosmological constant ($Λ$) as the pressure ($P$) of the black holes and its conjugate variable thermodynamical volume ($V$) of the black holes. Owing to the background clouds of strings parameter ($a$), we analyse the Hawking temperature, entropy and specific heat on horizon radius for fixed-parameter $k$. We find that the strings clouds background does not alter small/large black hole (SBH/LBH) phase transition but occurs at a larger horizon ra…
Holographic CFT phase transitions and criticality for charged Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes in the ensemble at fixed $(C, \mathcal{V}, \tilde{Q}, \tilde{\mathcal{A}})$
We consider a charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole in $d$-dimensional spacetime and examine the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of the concerned black hole. At first we take the first order logarithmic correction term in entropy and compute the thermodynamic potentials like Helmholtz free energy $F$, enthalpy $H$ and Gibbs free energy $G$ in the spherical, Ricci flat and hyperbolic topology of the black hole horizon, respectively. We also investigate the $P$-$V$ criticality and calculate the critical volume $V_c$, critical pressure $P_c$ and critical temperature $T_c$ using dif…
In this work we study the phase transitions between the planar charged AdS black hole and the planar charged soliton. The planar soliton is obtained as a double analytic continuation of the charged black hole metric, which also involves analytically continuing the electric charge. We show that there are phase transitions between both solutions depending on the electric potential, magnetic flux and temperature. The analysis is carried out in the Grand-Canonical ensemble.
Phase transition and heat engine efficiency of phantom AdS black holes are investigated with peculiar properties found. In the non-extended phase space, we probe the possibility of $T-S$ criticality in both the canonical ensemble and grand-canonical ensemble. It is shown that no $T-S$ criticality exists for the phantom AdS black hole in the canonical ensemble, which is different from the RN-AdS black hole. Contrary to the canonical ensemble, no critical point can be found for neither phantom AdS black holes nor RN-AdS black hole in the grand-canonical ensemble. Moreover, we study the specific …
In this paper, we consider a charged rotating AdS black holes in four dimensions and study the effects of leading-order thermal corrections on the thermodynamics of such system explicitly. The first-order corrected thermodynamical quantities also satisfy the first-law of thermodynamics of the black holes. The holographic duality between the charged rotating AdS black holes and Van der Waals fluid is also emphasized through the $P-v$ diagram. Finally, we study the effects of the leading-order thermal corrections on the stability of the charged rotating black holes.
We present a new family of topological charged hairy black hole solutions in asymptotically AdS space in $D$-dimensions. We solve the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar gravity system and obtain exact charged hairy black hole solutions with planar, spherical and hyperbolic horizon topologies. The scalar field is regular everywhere. We discuss the thermodynamics of the hairy black hole and find drastic changes in its thermodynamic structure due to the scalar field. For the case of planar and spherical horizons, we find charged hairy/RN-AdS black hole phase transition, with thermodynamically prefer…
As an intriguing topological defect, global monopole's influence on behaviors of black holes has always been anticipated but still remains less clear. Analyzing the thermodynamics of charged AdS black hole incorporating a global monopole manifests that the black hole undergoes a first-order phase transition at critical point, and of special interest, the critical behaviors qualitatively resemble a Van der Waals liquid-gas system. This paper concentrates on further investigating the charged AdS black hole with a global monopole, aiming at clarifying the significant effects of the global monopol…
In this paper, we visit the thermodynamic criticality and thermodynamic curvature of the charged AdS black hole in a new phase space. It is shown that when the square of the total charge of the charged black hole is considered as a thermodynamic quantity, the charged AdS black hole also admits an van der Waals-type critical behavior without the help of thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. Based on this, we study the fine phase structures of the charged AdS black hole with fixed AdS background in the new framework. On the one hand, we give the phase diagram structures of the charged…
We study electromagnetically charged dilatonic black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions with flat transverse spaces, that are asymptotically AdS. This class of solutions includes spacetimes which possess a bulk region where the metric is approximately invariant under Lifshitz scalings. Given fixed asymptotic boundary conditions, we analyze how the behavior of the bulk up to the horizon varies with the charges and derive the extremality conditions for these spacetimes.
We study the thermodynamics in the grand canonical ensemble of D-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes in the extended phase space. We find that the usual small-large black hole phase transition, which exhibits analogy with the Van de Waals liquid-gas system holds in five-dimensional spherical charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes when its potential is fixed within the range $0<Φ<\frac{\sqrt{3}π}{4}$. For the other higher dimensional and topological charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes, there is no such phase transition. In the limiting case, Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes, with …
In this paper we have considered the thermodynamics of a Born-Infeld $AdS$ black hole using inputs from the dual boundary field theory. Here, we have varied the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the Newton's gravitational constant $G$ along with the Born-Infeld parameter $b$ in the bulk. A novel universal critical behaviour of the central charge (occurring in the boundary conformal field theory) in extended black hole thermodynamics for charged black holes has been recently observed \cite{mann1}, and we have extended this study to Born-Infeld $AdS$ black holes. The Born-Infeld parameter has the di…
We generalize the vacuum static black brane solutions of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant recently discussed in literature, by introducing rotations and an electromagnetic field. We investigate numerically the thermodynamical properties of the charged and of the rotating $AdS$ black brane and we provide evidences for the existence of the charged and rotating case. In particular, we study the influence of the rotation and charge on the tension and mass. We find that the rotation essentially influences the tensions while the charge essentially influences the mass.
