We show that the quantum critical point (QCP) between a diffusive metal and ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) phases in the SYK chain has a gravitational description corresponding to the double-trace deformation in an AdS$_2$ chain. Specifically, by studying a double-trace deformation of a $Z_2$ scalar in an AdS$_2$ chain where the $Z_2$ scalar is dual to the order parameter in the SYK chain, we find that the susceptibility and renormalization group equation describing the QCP in the SYK chain can be exactly reproduced in the holographic model. Our results suggest that the infrared geometry in the gravity theory dual to the diffusive metal of the SYK chain is also an AdS$_2$ chain. We further show that the transition in SYK model captures universal information about double-trace deformation in generic black holes with near horizon AdS$_2$ spacetime.
We consider granular quantum matter defined by Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) dots coupled via random one-body hopping. Within the framework of Schwarzian field theory, we identify a zero temperature quantum phase transition between an insulating phase at weak and a metallic phase at strong hopping. The critical hopping strength scales inversely with the number of degrees of freedom on the dots. The increase of temperature out of either phase induces a crossover into a regime of strange metallic behavior.
We study four coupled SYK models and nearly AdS$_2$ gravities. In the SYK model side, we construct a model that couples two copies of two coupled SYK models. In nearly AdS$_2$ gravity side, we entangle matter fields in two copies of traversable wormholes. In both cases, the systems show first order phase transitions at zero temperature by changing couplings, which is understood as the exchange of traversable wormhole configurations. In nearly AdS$_2$ gravity cases, by exchanging the role of space and time the wormholes are interpreted as bra-ket wormholes. In Lorentzian signature, these bra-ke…
These are lecture notes based on a series of lectures presented at the XIII Modave Summer School in Mathematical physics aimed at PhD students and young postdocs. The goal is to give an introduction to some of the recent developments in understanding holography in two bulk dimensions, and its connection to microscopics of near extremal black holes. The first part reviews the motivation to study, and the problems (and their interpretations) with holography for AdS$_2$ spaces. The second part is about the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory and nearly-AdS$_2$ spaces. The third part introduces the Sachdev-Y…
In this paper, based on the notion of SYK/AdS duality we explore the effects of Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations on the SYK spectrum at strong coupling. In the first part of our analysis, we explore the consequences of YB deformations through the Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction on $ (AdS_2)_η\times (S^1)/Z_2 $. It turns out that the YB effects (on the SYK spectrum) starts showing off at \textit{quadratic} order in $ 1/J $ expansion. For the rest of the analysis, we provide an interpretation for the YB deformations in terms of bi-local/collective field excitations of the SYK model. Using large $ N $ t…
We show that the spectrum of the SYK model can be interpreted as that of a 3D scalar coupled to gravity. The scalar has a mass which is at the Breitenholer-Freedman bound of AdS$_2$, and subject to a delta function potential at the center of the interval along the third direction. This, through Kaluza-Klein procedure on AdS$_2 \times (S^1)/Z_2$, generates the spectrum reproducing the bi-local propagator at strong coupling. Furthermore, the leading $1/J$ correction calculated in this picture reproduces the known correction to the poles of the SYK propagator, providing credence to a conjecture t…
We argue that "stringy" effects in a putative gravity-dual picture for SYK-like models are related to the branching time, a kinetic coefficient defined in terms of the retarded kernel. A bound on the branching time is established assuming that the leading diagrams are ladders with thin rungs. Thus, such models are unlikely candidates for sub-AdS holography. In the weak coupling limit, we derive a relation between the branching time, the Lyapunov exponent, and the quasiparticle lifetime using two different approximations.
We consider pure states in the SYK model. These are given by a simple local condition on the Majorana fermions, evolved over an interval in Euclidean time to project on to low energy states. We find that "diagonal" correlators are exactly the same as thermal correlators at leading orders in the large $N$ expansion. We also describe "off diagonal" correlators that decay in time, and are given simply in terms of thermal correlators. We also solved the model numerically for low values of $N$ and noticed that subsystems become typically entangled after an interaction time. In addition, we identifi…
We compute the thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models of fermions with a conserved fermion number, $\mathcal{Q}$. We extend a previously proposed Schwarzian effective action to include a phase field, and this describes the low temperature energy and $\mathcal{Q}$ fluctuations. We obtain higher-dimensional generalizations of the SYK models which display disordered metallic states without quasiparticle excitations, and we deduce their thermoelectric transport coefficients. We also examine the corresponding properties of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories on black brane geom…
We study the double-scaling limit of SYK (DS-SYK) model and elucidate the underlying quantum group symmetry. The DS-SYK model is characterized by a parameter $q$, and in the $q\rightarrow 1$ and low-energy limit it goes over to the familiar Schwarzian theory. We relate the chord and transfer-matrix picture to the motion of a ``boundary particle" on the Euclidean Poincar{é} disk, which underlies the single-sided Schwarzian model. $AdS_2$ carries an action of $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2,{\mathbb R}) \simeq \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(1,1)$, and we argue that the symmetry of the full DS-SYK model is…
We study the $6j$ symbol for the conformal group, and its appearance in three seemingly unrelated contexts: the SYK model, conformal representation theory, and perturbative amplitudes in AdS. The contribution of the planar Feynman diagrams to the three-point function of the bilinear singlets in SYK is shown to be a $6j$ symbol. We generalize the computation of these and other Feynman diagrams to $d$ dimensions. The $6j$ symbol can be viewed as the crossing kernel for conformal partial waves, which may be computed using the Lorentzian inversion formula. We provide closed-form expressions for $6…
Recent studies of the fluctuations of an open string in AdS space show some pieces of evidence that the string with a worldsheet horizon could be a dual description of SYK model, as they saturate universal chaos bound and share the same symmetry. An open string hangs from the AdS boundary to the horizon of black brane could be dual to a 0+1 dimensional boundary state. To be specific, we find that the fluctuation of the string in charged BTZ black hole has an asymptotic scaling symmetry, and its Euclidean IR fixed point is governed by the quadratic order of Schwarzian action, which is just the …
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes electrons with random and all-to-all interactions, and realizes a many-body state without quasiparticle excitations, and a non-vanishing extensive entropy $S_0$ in the zero temperature limit. Its low energy theory coincides the low energy theory of the near-extremal charged black holes with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $S_0$. Several mesoscopic experimental configurations realizing SYK quantum dynamics over a significant intermediate temperature scale have been proposed. We investigate quantum thermoelectric transport in such configurations, and descri…
In this Letter, based on the notion of gauge/gravity duality, we compute $ q $ SYK spectra in the presence of Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations. The gravitational counterpart of this duality turns out to be the YB deformed Almheiri-Polchinski (AP) model embodied with hyperbolic potential for the dilaton. Following Kaluza-Klein reduction on $ (AdS_2)_η\times (S^1/ Z_2) $, we compute the deformed Green's function that reproduces the original $ q $ SYK spectrum in the limit of vanishing deformations.
We provide a non conformal generalization of the Compère-Song-Strominger (CSS) boundary conditions for AdS$_3$ gravity that breaks the $\widehat u(1)$ Kac-Moody-Virasoro symmetry to two $u(1)$s. The holographic dual specified by the new boundary conditions can be understood as an irrelevant deformation of a warped conformal field theory (WCFT). Upon consistent reduction to two dimensions, AdS$_3$ gravity results in a deformed Jackiw-Teitelboim dilaton gravity model coupled to a Maxwell field. We show that near extremality the boundary conditions inherited from generalized CSS boundary conditio…
Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which describes $N$ randomly interacting Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimension, is found to be an solvable UV-complete toy model for holographic duality in nearly AdS$_2$ dilaton gravity. Ref. [1] proposed a modified model by coupling two identical SYK models, which at low-energy limit is dual to a global AdS$_2$ geometry. This geometry is an "eternal wormhole" because the two boundaries are causally connected. Increasing the temperature drives a Hawking-Page like transition from the eternal wormhole geometry to two disconnected black holes with coupled matter field…
We construct a nearly-$AdS_2$ solution describing an eternal traversable wormhole. The solution contains negative null energy generated by quantum fields under the influence of an external coupling between the two boundaries. In parallel, we discuss two SYK systems coupled by a relevant interaction. The physics of the two cases is very similar. They both share a "gravitational" subsector which is identical. The solution within this subsector sets the stage for dynamics which is almost conformal invariant. We study this system in detail, both in gravity and in the SYK model. The coupled SYK mod…
A holographic description on antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) induced by magnetic field and the criticality in the vicinity of quantum critical point (QCP) have been investigated numerically recently. In this paper, we show that the properties of QPT in this holographic model are governed by a CFT dual to the emergent AdS$_2$ in the IR region, which confirms that the dual boundary theory is a strong coupling theory with dynamic exponent $z=2$ and logarithmic corrections appear. We also compare them with the results from Hertz model by solving RG equation at its upper critical d…
In lower dimensions, charged AdS black holes in an extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as the thermodynamic pressure, are typically absent of liquid/gas phase transitions. We investigate the criticality of lower dimensional charged, dilatonic, asymptotically AdS (CDAdS$_d$) black holes generated from consistent truncations of RNAdS$_{d+2}$ black objects. We demonstrate that CDAdS$_{d}$ black holes in $d<4$ can exhibit rich van der Waals behavior and confirm that the associated critical exponents match those expected from mean field theory.
The Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons of the SYK model are described by a coset space Diff/$\mathbb{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$, where Diff, or Virasoro group, is the group of diffeomorphisms of the time coordinate valued on the real line or a circle. It is known that the coadjoint orbit action of Diff naturally turns out to be the two-dimensional quantum gravity action of Polyakov without cosmological constant, in a certain gauge, in an asymptotically flat spacetime. Motivated by this observation, we explore Polyakov action with cosmological constant and boundary terms, and study the possibility of such a t…
Entanglement, chaos, and complexity are as important for de Sitter space as for AdS and for black holes. There are similarities and great differences between AdS and dS in how these concepts are manifested in the space-time geometry. In the first part of this paper the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, the theory of fast scrambling, and the holographic complexity correspondence are reformulated for de Sitter space. Criteria are proposed for a holographic model to describe de Sitter space. The criteria can be summarized by the requirement that scrambling and complexity growth must be "hyperfast." In…
Treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume, we reconsider the critical behaviour of charged AdS black holes. We complete the analogy of this system with the liquid-gas system and study its critical point, which occurs at the point of divergence of specific heat at constant pressure. We calculate the critical exponents and show that they coincide with those of the Van der Waals system.
We reconsider the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting where both the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the gravitational Newton constant $G$ are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both $Λ$ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of the charged AdS black holes, in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of free…
We consider a massive black hole in four dimensional AdS space and study the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of the black hole. We consider thermal fluctuations as logarithmic correction terms in the entropy. We analyse the effect of logarithmic correction on thermodynamics potentials like Helmholtz and Gibbs which are found decreasing functions. We study critical points and stability and find that presence of logarithmic correction is necessary to have stable phase and critical point.
In this paper, we investigate the $P-V$ criticality and phase transition of charged accelerating AdS black holes in the extended thermodynamic phase space in analogy between black hole system and Van der Waals liquid-gas system, where the cosmological constant $Λ$ is treated as a thermodynamical variable interpreted as dynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity is the thermodynamic volume of the black holes. When the electric charge vanishes, we find that no $P-V$ criticality will appear but the Hawking-Page like phase transition will be present, just as what Schwarzschild-AdS black holes beh…
We analyze the extended phase space thermodynamics of Kiselev black hole introducing a central charge and allowing the gravitational constant to vary. We also discuss the relation between the chemical potential and the size of the black hole, besides the new description of phase transitions. We obtain as a conclusion that the universality of the central charge does not remain valid in general.
In this paper, we consider dyonic charged AdS black hole which is holographic dual of a van der Waals fluid. We use logarithmic corrected entropy and study thermodynamics of the black hole and show that holographic picture is still valid. Critical behaviors and stability also discussed. Logarithmic corrections arises due to thermal fluctuations which are important when size of black hole be small. So, thermal fluctuations interpreted as quantum effect. It means that we can see quantum effect of a black hole which is a gravitational system.
We focus on the study of the exact solution corresponding to charged AdS black holes surrounded by quintessence with a cloud of strings present in higher dimensional spacetime. We then investigate its corresponding thermodynamic criticality in the extended phase space and show that the spacetime dimension has no effect on the existence of small/large phase transition for such black holes. The heat capacity is evaluated and the geothermodynamics of Quevedo analyzed for different spacetime dimensions with the cloud of strings and quintessence parameters. We calculate the critical exponents descr…
We study the spread of Rényi entropy between two halves of a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) chain of Majorana fermions, prepared in a thermofield double (TFD) state. The SYK chain model is a model of chaotic many-body systems, which describes a one-dimensional lattice of Majorana fermions, with spatially local random quartic interaction. We find that for integer Rényi index $n>1$, the Rényi entanglement entropy saturates at a parametrically smaller value than expected. This implies that the TFD state of the SYK chain does not rapidly thermalize, despite being maximally chaotic: instead, it rapidly ap…
Motivated by $T\bar T$, we introduce and study a wide class of solvable deformations of quantum-mechanical theories. These deformations map the Hamiltonian to a function of itself. We solve these theories by computing all finite-temperature correlation functions of the deformed theory in terms of the correlators of the undeformed theory. Applications to AdS/CFT, SYK, and the Schwarzian theory are considered. We write down the deformed Schwarzian action for an arbitrary Hamiltonian deformation and find that the maximal Lyapunov exponent is unchanged.
We study the conventional holographic recipes and its real-time extensions in the context of the correspondence between SYK quantum mechanics and JT gravity. We first observe that only closed contours are allowed to have a 2d space-time holographic dual. Thus, in any real-time formulation of the duality, the boundaries of a classical connected geometry are a set of closed curves, parameterized by a complex \emph{closed} time contour as in the Schwinger-Keldysh framework. Thereby, a consistent extension of the standard holographic formulas is proposed, in order to describe the correspondence be…
We study the hololgraphic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravitational thermodynamics of AdS black holes can be extended by allowing for variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant. In the dual CFT this corresponds to including the central charge $C$ and its chemical potential $μ$ as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables, in addition to the standard pairs: temperature vs. entropy $(T,S)$, electric potential vs. charge $(\tilde Φ, \tilde Q)$ and field theory press…
We study various aspects of the mass deformed SYK model which can escape the interiors of pure boundary state black holes. SYK boundary states are given by a simple local boundary condition on the Majorana fermions and then evolved in Euclidean time in the SYK Hamiltonian. We study the ground state of this mass deformed SYK model in detail. We also use SYK boundary states as a variational approximation to the ground state of the mass deformed SYK model. We compare variational approximation with the exact ground state results and they showed a good agreement. We also study the time evolution of…
The effects of conformal anomaly on the thermodynamics of black holes are investigated in this Letter from the perspective of $P-V$ criticality of AdS black holes. Treating the cosmological constant as thermodynamic pressure, we extend the recent research to the extended phase space. Firstly, we study the $P$-$V$ criticality of the uncharged AdS black holes with conformal anomaly and find that conformal anomaly does not influence whether there exists Van der Waals like critical behavior. Secondly, we investigate the $P$-$V$ criticality of the charged cases and find that conformal anomaly influ…
The study of quantum gravity in the form of the holographic duality has uncovered and motivated the detailed investigation of various diagnostics of quantum chaos. One such measure is the operator size distribution, which characterizes the size of the support region of an operator and its evolution under Heisenberg evolution. In this work, we examine the role of the operator size distribution in holographic duality for the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Using an explicit construction of AdS$_2$ bulk fermion operators in a putative dual of the low temperature SYK model, we study the operator si…
In this paper, the $P-V$ criticality and Joule-Thomson Expansion of Hayward-AdS black holes in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity are studied in the extended phase space. We find the black hole always exhibits a phase transition similar to that of the Van der Waals system for any arbitrary positive parameters $α$ and $g$. We also study the dependence of $α$ and $g$ on the inversion curves and plot the inversion and isenthalpic curves in the $T-P$ plane, which can determine the cooling-heating regions.
The phase transition and critical behaviours of charged AdS black holes in $f(R)$ gravity with a conformally invariant Maxwell (CIM) source and constant curvature are further investigated. As a highlight, this research is carried out by employing new state parameters $(T,Q,Φ)$ and contributes to deeper understanding the thermodynamics and phase structure of black holes. Our analyses manifest that the charged $f(R)$-CIM AdS black hole undergoes a first order small-large black hole phase transition, and the critical behaviours qualitatively behave like a Van der Waals liquid-vapor system. Howeve…
We analyze the error correcting properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, with errors that correspond to erasures of subsets of fermions. We study the limit where the number of fermions erased is large but small compared to the total number of fermions. We compute the price of the quantum error correcting code, defined as the number of physical qubits needed to reconstruct whether a given operator has been acted upon the thermal state or not. By thinking about reconstruction via quantum teleportation, we argue for a bound that relates the price to the ordinary operator size in systems that di…
According to more recent AdS/CFT interpretation \cite{Karch:2015rpa}, in which varying cosmological constant $Λ$ in the bulk corresponds to varying the curvature radius governing the space on which the field theory resides, we study the criticality of thermodynamic curvatures for thermal boundary conformal field theories (CFT) that are dual to $d$-dimensional charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes, embedded in $D$-dimensional M-theory/superstring inspired models having $AdS_{d}\times \mathbb{S}^{d+k}$ spacetime with $D=2d+k$. Analogous with criticality features acquired for charged AdS black…
Considering de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley theory of massive gravity coupled with (ghost free) higher curvature terms arisen from the Lovelock Lagrangian, we obtain charged AdS black hole solutions in diverse dimensions. We compute thermodynamic quantities in the extended phase space by considering the variations of the negative cosmological constant, Lovelock coefficients ($α_{i}$) and massive couplings ($c_{i}$), and prove that such variations is necessary for satisfying the extended first law of thermodynamics as well as associated Smarr formula. In addition, by performing a comprehensive thermal…
We study the $P-V$ critical behaivor of N-dimensional AdS black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-power-Yang-Mills gravity. Our results show the existence of the Van der Waals like small-large black hole phase transitions when taking some special values of charges of the Maxwell and Yang-Mills (YM) fields. Further to calculate the critical exponents of the black holes at the critical point, we find that they are the same as those in the Van der Waals liquid-gas system.
AdS black holes show richer transition behaviors in extended phase space by assuming the cosmological constant and its conjugate quantity to behave like thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. We study the extended thermodynamics of charged dilatonic AdS black holes in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories that can be embedded in gauged supergravities in various dimensions. We find that the transition behaviors of higher dimensional dilatonic AdS black holes are different from the four dimensional counterparts, and new transition behaviors emerges in higher dimensions. First, t…

In order to achieve a deeper understanding of gravity theories, it is important to further investigate the thermodynamic properties of black hole at the critical point, besides the phase transition and critical behaviors. In this paper, by using Maxwell's equal area law, we choose $T,Q,Φ$ as the state parameters and study the phase equilibrium problem of general $(n+1)$-dimensional RN-AdS black holes thermodynamic system. The boundary of the two-phase coexistence region and its isotherm and isopotential lines are presented, which may provide theoretical foundation for studying the phase transi…
We show that the near-extremal solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories, studied in ArXiv:1005.4690, provide IR quantum critical geometries, by embedding classes of them in higher-dimensional AdS and Lifshitz solutions. This explains the scaling of their thermodynamic functions and their IR transport coefficients, the nature of their spectra, the Gubser bound, and regulates their singularities. We propose that these are the most general quantum critical IR asymptotics at finite density of EMD theories.
Gravity solutions dual to d-dimensional field theories at finite charge density have a near-horizon region which is AdS_2 x R^{d-1}. The scale invariance of the AdS_2 region implies that at low energies the dual field theory exhibits emergent quantum critical behavior controlled by a (0+1)-dimensional CFT. This interpretation sheds light on recently-discovered holographic descriptions of Fermi surfaces, allowing an analytic understanding of their low-energy excitations. For example, the scaling behavior near the Fermi surfaces is determined by conformal dimensions in the emergent IR CFT. In pa…
In black hole thermodynamics, it has been observed that AdS black holes behave as van der Waals system if one interprets the cosmological constant as a pressure term. Also the critical exponents for the phase transition of AdS black holes and the van der Waals systems are same. Till now this type of analysis is done by two steps. In the first step one shows that a particular metric allows phase transition and in the second step, using this information, one calculates the exponents. Here, we present a different approach based on two universal inputs (the general forms of the Smarr formula and t…
We investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of AdS quasitopological black hole solutions in the context of extended thermodynamic phase space, in which the cosmological constant induces a pressure with a conjugate volume. We find that the third order exact quasitopological solution exhibits features consistent with the third order Lovelock solutions for positive quasitopological coupling, including multiple reentrant phase transitions and isolated critical points. For negative coupling we find the first instances of both reentrant phase transitions and thermodynamic singularities in five dimens…
