We argue that "stringy" effects in a putative gravity-dual picture for SYK-like models are related to the branching time, a kinetic coefficient defined in terms of the retarded kernel. A bound on the branching time is established assuming that the leading diagrams are ladders with thin rungs. Thus, such models are unlikely candidates for sub-AdS holography. In the weak coupling limit, we derive a relation between the branching time, the Lyapunov exponent, and the quasiparticle lifetime using two different approximations.
We continue the study of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model in the Large $N$ limit. Following our formulation in terms of bi-local collective fields with dynamical reparametrization symmetry, we perform perturbative calculations around the conformal IR point.
We compute the thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models of fermions with a conserved fermion number, $\mathcal{Q}$. We extend a previously proposed Schwarzian effective action to include a phase field, and this describes the low temperature energy and $\mathcal{Q}$ fluctuations. We obtain higher-dimensional generalizations of the SYK models which display disordered metallic states without quasiparticle excitations, and we deduce their thermoelectric transport coefficients. We also examine the corresponding properties of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories on black brane geom…
These are lecture notes based on a series of lectures presented at the XIII Modave Summer School in Mathematical physics aimed at PhD students and young postdocs. The goal is to give an introduction to some of the recent developments in understanding holography in two bulk dimensions, and its connection to microscopics of near extremal black holes. The first part reviews the motivation to study, and the problems (and their interpretations) with holography for AdS$_2$ spaces. The second part is about the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory and nearly-AdS$_2$ spaces. The third part introduces the Sachdev-Y…
We provide the first steps towards a flat space holographic correspondence in two bulk spacetime dimensions. The gravity side is described by a conformally transformed version of the matterless Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger model. The field theory side follows from the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model in the limit of large specific heat and vanishing compressibility. We derive the boundary action analogous to the Schwarzian as the key link between gravity and field theory sides and show that it coincides with a geometric action discovered recently by one of us, see 1908.08089.
The sparse version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model reproduces essential features of the original SYK model while reducing the number of disorder parameters. In this paper, we propose a further simplification of the model which we call the binary-coupling sparse SYK model. We set the nonzero couplings to be $\pm 1$, rather than being sampled from a continuous distribution such as Gaussian. Remarkably, this simplification turns out to be an improvement: the binary-coupling model exhibits strong correlations in the spectrum, which is the important feature of the original SYK model that leads…
We discuss large $N$ rules of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and the bi-local representation of holography of this theory. This is done by establishing $1/N$ Feynman rules in terms of bi-local propagators and vertices, which can be evaluated following the recent procedure of Polchinski and Rosenhaus. These rules can be interpreted as Witten type diagrams of the dual AdS theory, which we are able to define at IR fixed point and off.
Entanglement, chaos, and complexity are as important for de Sitter space as for AdS and for black holes. There are similarities and great differences between AdS and dS in how these concepts are manifested in the space-time geometry. In the first part of this paper the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, the theory of fast scrambling, and the holographic complexity correspondence are reformulated for de Sitter space. Criteria are proposed for a holographic model to describe de Sitter space. The criteria can be summarized by the requirement that scrambling and complexity growth must be "hyperfast." In…
We study a sparse version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model defined on random hypergraphs constructed either by a random pruning procedure or by randomly sampling regular hypergraphs. The resulting model has a new parameter, $k$, defined as the ratio of the number of terms in the Hamiltonian to the number of degrees of freedom, with the sparse limit corresponding to the thermodynamic limit at fixed $k$. We argue that this sparse SYK model recovers the interesting global physics of ordinary SYK even when $k$ is of order unity. In particular, at low temperature the model exhibits a gravitatio…
We study the conventional holographic recipes and its real-time extensions in the context of the correspondence between SYK quantum mechanics and JT gravity. We first observe that only closed contours are allowed to have a 2d space-time holographic dual. Thus, in any real-time formulation of the duality, the boundaries of a classical connected geometry are a set of closed curves, parameterized by a complex \emph{closed} time contour as in the Schwinger-Keldysh framework. Thereby, a consistent extension of the standard holographic formulas is proposed, in order to describe the correspondence be…
We find half-wormhole solutions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity by allowing the geometry to end on a spacetime D-brane with specific boundary conditions. This theory also contains a Euclidean wormhole which leads to a factorization problem. We propose that half-wormholes provide a gravitational picture for how factorization is restored and show that the Euclidean wormhole emerges from averaging over the boundary conditions. The wormhole is known to be dual to a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with random complex couplings. We find that the free energy of the half-wormhole is strikingly similar to t…
We propose a paradigm for realizing the SYK model within string theory. Using the large $N$ matrix description of $c<1$ string theory, we show that the effective theory on a large number $Q$ of FZZT D-branes in $(p,1)$ minimal string theory takes the form of the disorder averaged SYK model with $J ψ^{p}$ interaction. The SYK fermions represent open strings between the FZZT branes and the ZZ branes that underly the matrix model. The continuum SYK dynamics arises upon taking the large $Q$ limit. We observe several qualitative and quantitative links between the SYK model and $(p,q)$ minimal strin…
The SYK model, a quantum mechanical model of $N \gg 1$ Majorana fermions $χ_i$, with a $q$-body, random interaction, is a novel realization of holography. It is known that the AdS$_2$ dual contains a tower of massive particles, yet there is at present no proposal for the bulk theory. As SYK is solvable in the $1/N$ expansion, one can systematically derive the bulk. We initiate such a program, by analyzing the fermion two, four and six-point functions, from which we extract the tower of singlet, large $N$ dominant, operators, their dimensions, and their three-point correlation functions. These …
The Sachdev--Ye--Kitaev is a quantum mechanical model of $N$ Majorana fermions which displays a number of appealing features -- solvability in the strong coupling regime, near-conformal invariance and maximal chaos -- which make it a suitable model for black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT holography. In this paper, we show for the colored SYK model and several of its tensor model cousins that the next-to-leading order in the large $N$ expansion preserves the conformal invariance of the $2$-point function in the strong coupling regime, up to the contribution of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons …
Superconductivity is abundant near quantum-critical points, where fluctuations suppress the formation of Fermi liquid quasiparticles and the BCS theory no longer applies. Two very distinct approaches have been developed to address this issue: quantum-critical Eliashberg theory and holographic superconductivity. The former includes a strongly retarded pairing interaction of ill-defined fermions, the latter is rooted in the duality of quantum field theory and gravity theory. We demonstrate that both are different perspectives of the same theory. We derive holographic superconductivity in form of…
In this letter, we study the return amplitude, which is the overlap between the initial state and the time evolved state, in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Initial states are taken to be product states in a spin basis. We numerically study the return amplitude by exactly diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. We also derive the analytic expression for the return amplitude in random matrix theory. The SYK results agree with the random matrix expectation. We also study the time evolution under the different Hamiltonian that describes the traversable wormholes in projected black holes in the context …
We study universal spatial features of certain non-equilibrium steady states corresponding to flows of strongly correlated fluids over obstacles. This allows us to predict universal spatial features of far-from-equilibrium systems, which in certain interesting cases depend cleanly on the hydrodynamic transport coefficients of the underlying theory, such as $η/s$, the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. In this work we give a purely field-theoretical definition of the spatial collective modes identified earlier and proceed to demonstrate their usefulness in a set of examples, drawing on h…
According to holography, entanglement is the building block of spacetime; therefore, drastic changes of entanglement will lead to interesting transitions in the dual spacetime. In this paper, we study the effect of projective measurements on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model's thermofield double state, dual to an eternal black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We calculate the (Renyi-2) mutual information between the two copies of the SYK model upon projective measurement of a subset of fermions in one copy. We propose a dual JT gravity model that can account for the change of entangleme…
This thesis consists of four parts. In the first part of the thesis, we investigate the phase structure of Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar system with a negative cosmological constant. We chart out the full phase diagram, and discuss it's dependence on the value of the scalar charge. In the second part, we do a systematic study of the phases of gravity coupled to an electromagnetic field and charged scalar in flat space, with box boundary conditions, and we show that the system admits both boson stars as well as hairy black holes as solutions, providing yet another way to evade flat space no-hair theo…
In this paper, I study the entanglement entropy in Hartle-Hawking states of JT gravity set up by a Euclidean path integral with an operator inserted somewhere along the Euclidean boundary. I show that the entanglement entropy between the dual SYK models can be written to leading order in $1/G_N$ in a way that resembles a formula for entanglement entropy in a compact lattice gauge theory, but where the link that we appear to compute the entanglement across depends on where we put the operator along the Euclidean boundary. I then describe a toy model where we can write down an explicit family of…
In previous work we constructed an explicit mapping between large $N$ vector models (free or critical) in $d$ dimensions and a non-local high-spin gravity theory on $AdS_{d+1}$, such that the gravitational theory reproduces the field theory correlation functions order by order in $1/N$. In this paper we discuss three aspects of this mapping. First, our original mapping was not valid non-perturbatively in $1/N$, since it did not include non-local correlations between the gravity fields which appear at finite $N$. We show that by using a bi-local $G-Σ$ type formalism similar to the one used in t…
