We find half-wormhole solutions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity by allowing the geometry to end on a spacetime D-brane with specific boundary conditions. This theory also contains a Euclidean wormhole which leads to a factorization problem. We propose that half-wormholes provide a gravitational picture for how factorization is restored and show that the Euclidean wormhole emerges from averaging over the boundary conditions. The wormhole is known to be dual to a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with random complex couplings. We find that the free energy of the half-wormhole is strikingly similar to that of a single realization of this SYK model. These results suggest that the gravitational path integral computes an average over spacetime D-brane boundary conditions.
We study probe scalar correlation functions in a Solodukhin wormhole corresponding to the non-rotating BTZ black hole, as a toy model for microstate geometries thereof. Using real-time holography, we obtain the retarded scalar correlator in the wormhole geometry and quantitatively compare it to the result of the hybrid WKB method for the same correlator. We also calculate an off-diagonal correlator $\sim\langle H L L H' \rangle$ involving two different (heavy) wormhole states.
The Goheer-Kleban-Susskind no-go theorem says that the symmetry of de Sitter space is incompatible with finite entropy. The meaning and consequences of the theorem are discussed in the light of recent developments in holography and gravitational path integrals. The relation between the GKS theorem, Boltzmann fluctuations, wormholes, and exponentially suppressed non-perturbative phenomena suggests: the classical symmetry between different static patches is broken; and that eternal de Sitter space -- if it exists at all -- is an ensemble average.
Wormholes are intriguing classical solutions in General Relativity, that have fascinated theoretical physicists for decades. In recent years, especially in Holography, gravitationalWormhole geometries have found a new life in many theoretical ideas related to quantum aspects of gravity. These ideas primarily revolve around aspects of quantum entanglement and quantum information in (semi-classical) gravity. This is an introductory and pedagogical review of Wormholes and their recent applications in Gauge-Gravity duality and related ideas.
Asymptotically AdS wormhole solutions are considered in the context of holography. Correlation functions of local operators on distinct boundaries are studied. It is found that such correlators are finite at short distances. Correlation functions of non-local operators (Wilson loops) on distinct boundaries are also studied, with similar conclusions. Deformations of the theory with multi-trace operators on distinct boundaries are considered and studied. As a consequence of these results, the dual theory is expected to factorize in the UV, and the two sectors to be coupled by a soft non-local in…
The recent paper 1809.01197 described how states of a holographic CFT can be approximated by states of a large collection of non-interacting BCFTs, such that the dual of the new system accurately approximates an arbitrarily large causal patch of the original geometry. In this paper, we first describe in more detail the geometries dual to such discrete BCFT systems, emphasizing that they are multi-boundary wormholes in which it is not possible to move causally between different asymptotic regions. By reintroducing couplings between the BCFTs in various ways, we show that the wormholes can be ma…

We interpret the traversable wormhole in AdS/CFT in the context of quantum information theory. In particular, we investigate its properties as both a quantum channel and entanglement witness. We define protocols that allow either the bounding of the channel's entanglement capacity or the determination of aspects of the entanglement structure between the two boundary CFTs. Such protocols and connections allow for the use of quantum channel techniques in the study of gravitational physics and vice versa. More generally, our results suggest a purely quantum information-theoretic criterion for rec…
We argue that "stringy" effects in a putative gravity-dual picture for SYK-like models are related to the branching time, a kinetic coefficient defined in terms of the retarded kernel. A bound on the branching time is established assuming that the leading diagrams are ladders with thin rungs. Thus, such models are unlikely candidates for sub-AdS holography. In the weak coupling limit, we derive a relation between the branching time, the Lyapunov exponent, and the quasiparticle lifetime using two different approximations.
We study four coupled SYK models and nearly AdS$_2$ gravities. In the SYK model side, we construct a model that couples two copies of two coupled SYK models. In nearly AdS$_2$ gravity side, we entangle matter fields in two copies of traversable wormholes. In both cases, the systems show first order phase transitions at zero temperature by changing couplings, which is understood as the exchange of traversable wormhole configurations. In nearly AdS$_2$ gravity cases, by exchanging the role of space and time the wormholes are interpreted as bra-ket wormholes. In Lorentzian signature, these bra-ke…
We find regular axionic Euclidean wormhole solutions in Type IIB string theory compactified on $\text{AdS}_5\times \text{S}^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$. AdS/CFT enables a precise derivation of the axion content of the Euclidean theory, placing the string theory embedding of the wormholes on firm footing. This further sharpens the paradox posed by these solutions.
We analyze the amount of information that can be sent through the traversable wormholes of Gao, Jafferis, and Wall. Although we find that the wormhole is open for a proper time shorter than the Planck time, the transmission of a signal through the wormhole can sometimes remain within the semiclassical regime. For black holes with horizons of order the AdS radius, information cannot be reliably sent through the wormhole. However, black holes with horizon radius much larger than the AdS radius do allow for the transmission of a number of quanta of order the horizon area in AdS units. More inform…
In this work we explore the effect of rotation in the size of a traversable wormhole obtained via a double trace boundary deformation. We find that at fixed temperature the size of the wormhole increases with the angular momentum $J/M\ell$. The amount of information that can be sent through the wormhole increases as well. However, for the type of interaction considered, the wormhole closes as the temperature approaches the extremal limit. We also briefly consider the scenario where the boundary coupling is not spatially homogeneous and show how this is reflected in the wormhole opening.
We construct an eternal traversable wormhole connecting two asymptotically $\text{AdS}_4$ regions. The wormhole is dual to the ground state of a system of two identical holographic CFT's coupled via a single low-dimension operator. The coupling between the two CFT's leads to negative null energy in the bulk, which supports a static traversable wormhole. As the ground state of a simple Hamiltonian, it may be possible to make these wormholes in the lab or on a quantum computer.
These are lecture notes based on a series of lectures presented at the XIII Modave Summer School in Mathematical physics aimed at PhD students and young postdocs. The goal is to give an introduction to some of the recent developments in understanding holography in two bulk dimensions, and its connection to microscopics of near extremal black holes. The first part reviews the motivation to study, and the problems (and their interpretations) with holography for AdS$_2$ spaces. The second part is about the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory and nearly-AdS$_2$ spaces. The third part introduces the Sachdev-Y…
In this proceedings contribution we summarize and discuss results of Refs. \cite{Grumiller:2013swa, Grumiller:2015vaa} in the light of recent developments in $\textrm{AdS}_2$ holography \cite{Maldacena:2016upp, Jensen:2016pah, Engelsoy:2016xyb}.
The principle of the holography of information states that in a theory of quantum gravity a copy of all the information available on a Cauchy slice is also available near the boundary of the Cauchy slice. This redundancy in the theory is already present at low energy. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, this principle can be translated into a statement about the dual conformal field theory. We carry out this translation and demonstrate that the principle of the holography of information holds in bilocal holography.
I present an informal overview of several recent results about Euclidean saddle points sourced by axion fields in quantum gravity (AdS/CFT), such as wormholes, their extremal "D-instanton" limits and their under-extremal singular counterparts. Concerning wormholes we argue they cannot contribute to the path integral because a stability analysis suggests they fragment like other super-extremal objects. For concrete AdS/CFT embeddings the Euclidean saddle point solutions are neatly described by geodesic curves living inside moduli spaces and can typically be solved for using group theory. Our wo…
We revisit AdS$_2$ holography with the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models in mind. Our main result is to rewrite a generic theory of gravity near an AdS$_2$ throat as a novel hydrodynamics coupled to the correlation functions of a conformal quantum mechanics. This gives a prescription for the computation of $n$-point functions in the dual quantum mechanics. We thereby find that the dual is maximally chaotic.
We attempt to construct eternal traversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically AdS regions by introducing a static coupling between their dual CFTs. We prove that there are no semiclassical traversable wormholes with Poincaré invariance in the boundary directions in higher than two spacetime dimensions. We critically examine the possibility of evading our result by coupling a large number of bulk fields. Static, traversable wormholes with less symmetry may be possible, and could be constructed using the ingredients we develop here.
We study supergravity instantons sourced by axion (and saxion) fields in the Euclidean $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$ vacua of IIB supergravity. Such instantons are described by geodesic curves on the moduli space; the timelike geodesics can describe Euclidean wormholes, the lightlike geodesics describe (generalisations of) D-instantons and spacelike geodesics are sub-extremal versions thereof. We perform a concrete classification of such geodesics and find that, despite earlier claims, the wormholes fail to be regular. A subclass of the lightlike geodesics is supersymmetric and, up to dualitie…
We discuss AdS$_2$ quantum gravity from an unconventional perspective that emphasizes bulk geometry. In our approach, AdS$_2$ has no boundary, there are no divergences that require renormalization, and the dilaton of JT-gravity can be omitted altogether. The result is the standard Schwarzian theory. However, it may be advantageous that our derivation just relies on conventional AdS/CFT correspondence and effective quantum field theory. For example, it clarifies the symmetry breaking pattern. It also puts the non-compact AdS$_2$ topology on the same footing as compact Riemann surfaces.
In these lectures I review some recent progresses in counting the number of microstates of AdS supersymmetric black holes in dimensions equal or greater than four using holography. The counting is obtained by applying localization and matrix model techniques to the dual field theory. I cover in details the case of dyonic AdS$_4$ black holes, corresponding to a twisted compactification of the dual field theory, and I discuss the state of the art for rotating AdS$_5$ black holes.
We explore the construction and stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter Euclidean wormholes in a variety of models. In simple ad hoc low-energy models, it is not hard to construct two-boundary Euclidean wormholes that dominate over disconnected solutions and which are stable (lacking negative modes) in the usual sense of Euclidean quantum gravity. Indeed, the structure of such solutions turns out to strongly resemble that of the Hawking-Page phase transition for AdS-Schwarzschild black holes, in that for boundary sources above some threshold we find both a `large' and a `small' branch of wo…
A large AdS Schwarzschild black hole can be approximated by an AdS planar black hole. However, the temperature of a planar black hole is not well defined due to the translational invariance of the horizon. We propose to fix this arbitrariness by imposing the entropy area law. Furthermore, using the AdS/CFT holography, we propose a relationship between the temperatures of an AdS planar and large AdS Schwarzschild black holes.
We develop models of 1+1 dimensional dilaton gravity describing flows to $AdS_2$ from higher dimensional $AdS$ and other spaces. We use these to study the effects of backreaction on holographic correlators. We show that this scales as a relevant effect at low energies, for compact transverse spaces. We also discuss effects of matter loops, as in the CGHS model.
We present in detail the basic ingredients contained in bi-local holography, representing a constructive scheme for reconstructing AdS bulk theories in Vectorial/AdS duality. Explicit Mapping to bulk AdS and higher spin fields is seen to be given by a double Fourier transform. All order interactions are explicitly specified through the collective action. This generates bulk Feynman (Witten) diagrams (at tree and loop level). We give details of the four-point case evaluation. It is noted that the bi-local construction goes beyond the assumptions in various discussions of non-locality.
We consider string probes in a traversable wormhole geometry that connects two locally AdS$_5$ asymptotic regions. Holographically, this describes two interacting copies of a 4-dimensional gauge theory. We consider string configurations whose endpoints are located either in the same boundary or in the two different boundaries of the wormhole. A string with both endpoints in the same boundary is dual to a quark-antiquark pair charged under the same gauge field, while a string extending through the wormhole describes a pair of colored particles charged under two different gauge fields. When one …
We use the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation to study the formation and propagation of bound states in the vicinity of a wormhole in the non-minimal derivative coupling theory of gravity. The wormhole throat connects two Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that when the scalar field lies in high orbital states, the corresponding potential has potential barriers that block the passage of a classical field. We investigate the behaviour of the bound states trapped in the potential wells and provide the flow between the two AdS regions.
We study several aspects of holographic entanglement in two models known as flat$_3$/BMSFT and (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT. These are two examples of holography beyond AdS/CFT where the the boundary field theories are not Lorentz invariant but still feature an infinite set of local symmetries. In the first example, BMS-invariant field theories (BMSFTs) are conjectured to provide a holographic description of quantum gravity in asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes; while in the second example, warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are proposed to describe quantum gravity in warped AdS$_3$ or A…
Negativity is a measure of entanglement that can be used both in pure and mixed states. The negativity spectrum is the spectrum of eigenvalues of the partially transposed density matrix, and characterizes the degree and "phase" of entanglement. For pure states, it is simply determined by the entanglement spectrum. We use a diagrammatic method complemented by a modification of the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to find the negativity spectrum in general random tensor networks with large bond dimensions. In holography, these describe the entanglement of fixed-area states. It was found that many fixed-…
