We provide a sharp estimate for the asymptotic number of lattice zonotopes, inscribed in $[0,n ]^d$ when $n$ tends to infinity. Our estimate refines the logarithmic equivalent established by Barany, Bureaux, and Lund when the sum of the generators of the zonotope is prescribed. As we shall see, the exponential part of our estimate is composed of a polynomial of degree $d$ in $n^{1/(d+1)}$, and involves Riemann's zeta function and its non-trivial zeros. %Our analysis is based on a mapping between sums of coprime numbers and Eulerian polynomials. We also analyze some combinatorial properties of lattice zonotopes. In particular, we provide the first moment of the polyhedral graph asymptotic diameter when $n$ goes to infinity.
We establish sharp asymptotic estimates for the diameter of primitive zonotopes when their dimension is fixed. We also prove that, for infinitely many integers $k$, the largest possible diameter of a lattice zonotope contained in the hypercube $[0,k]^d$ is uniquely achieved by a primitive zonotope. As a consequence, we obtain that this largest diameter grows like $k^{d/(d+1)}$ up to an explicit multiplicative constant, when $d$ is fixed and $k$ goes to infinity, providing a new lower bound on the largest possible diameter of a lattice polytope contained in $[0,k]^d$.
Motivated by the problem of finding resistances among vertices in a hypercube, we derive exact expressions, generating functions, and asymptotic expansions for these resistances, then study the combinatorial interpretations of the coefficients arising in these asymptotic expansions.
We find the asymptotic behavior of the Steiner k-diameter of the $n$-cube if $k$ is large. Our main contribution is the lower bound, which utilizes the probabilistic method.
In this expository note we describe a proof due to A. Sapozhenko that the number of independent sets in the discrete $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$ is asymptotically $2 \sqrt{e} 2^{2^{d-1}}$ as $d$ tends to infinity.
A subset of the finite dimensional hypercube is said to be equilateral if the distance of any two distinct points equals a fixed value. The equilateral dimension of the hypercube is defined as the maximal size of its equilateral subsets. We study asymptotic bounds on the latter quantity considered as a function of two variables, namely dimension and distance.
Given $p \in (0,1)$, we let $Q_p= Q_p^d$ be the random subgraph of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q^d$ where edges are present independently with probability $p$. It is well known that, as $d \rightarrow \infty$, if $p>\frac12$ then with high probability $Q_p$ is connected; and if $p<\frac12$ then with high probability $Q_p$ consists of one giant component together with many smaller components which form the `fragment'. Here we fix $p \in (0,\frac12)$, and investigate the fragment, and how it sits inside the hypercube. In particular we give asymptotic estimates for the mean numbers of componen…
A point in the $d$-dimensional integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is primitive when its coordinates are relatively prime. Two primitive points are multiples of one another when they are opposite, and for this reason, we consider half of the primitive points within the lattice, the ones whose first non-zero coordinate is positive. We solve the packing problem that asks for the largest possible number of such points whose absolute values of any given coordinate sum to at most a fixed integer $k$. We present several consequences of this result at the intersection of geometry, number theory, and combi…
It is proved that the asymptotic average eccentricity and the asymptotic average degree of Fibonacci cubes and Lucas cubes are $(5+\sqrt 5)/10$ and $(5-\sqrt 5)/5$, respectively. A new labeling of the leaves of Fibonacci trees is introduced and proved that the eccentricity of a vertex of a given Fibonacci cube is equal to the depth of the associated leaf in the corresponding Fibonacci tree. Hypercube density is also introduced and studied. The hypercube density of both Fibonacci cubes and Lucas cubes is shown to be $(1-1/\sqrt 5)/\log_2φ$, where $φ$ is the golden ratio, and the Cartesian produ…
We revisit Sapozhenko's classic proof on the asymptotics of the number of independent sets in the discrete hypercube $\{0,1\}^d$ and Galvin's follow-up work on weighted independent sets. We combine Sapozhenko's graph container methods with the cluster expansion and abstract polymer models, two tools from statistical physics, to obtain considerably sharper asymptotics and detailed probabilistic information about the typical structure of (weighted) independent sets in the hypercube. These results refine those of Korshunov and Sapozhenko and Galvin, and answer several questions of Galvin.
How many edges can a quadrilateral-free subgraph of a hypercube have? This question was raised by Paul Erdős about $27$ years ago. His conjecture that such a subgraph asymptotically has at most half the edges of a hypercube is still unresolved. Let $f(n,C_l)$ be the largest number of edges in a subgraph of a hypercube $Q_n$ containing no cycle of length $l$. It is known that $f(n, C_l) = o(|E(Q_n)|)$, when $l= 4k$, $k\geq 2$ and that $f(n, C_6) \geq \frac{1}{3} |E(Q_n)|$. It is an open question to determine $f(n, C_l)$ for $l=4k+2$, $k\geq 2$. Here, we give a general upper bound for $f(n,C_l)$…
Let $s_d(n)$ be the number of distinct decompositions of the $d$-dimensional hypercube with $n$ rectangular regions that can be obtained via a sequence of splitting operations. We prove that the generating series $y = \sum_{n \geq 1} s_d(n)x^n$ satisfies the functional equation $x = \sum_{n\geq 1} μ_d(n)y^n$, where $μ_d(n)$ is the $d$-fold Dirichlet convolution of the Möbius function. This generalizes a recent result by Goulden et al., and shows that $s_1(n)$ also gives the number of natural exact covering systems of $\mZ$ with $n$ residual classes. We also prove an asymptotic formula for $s_d…
Let $Q_{d,p}$ be the random subgraph of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $\{0,1\}^d$, where each edge is retained independently with probability $p$. We study the asymptotic number of independent sets in $Q_{d,p}$ as $d \to \infty$ for a wide range of parameters $p$, including values of $p$ tending to zero as fast as $\frac{C\log d}{d^{1/3}}$, constant values of $p$, and values of $p$ tending to one. The results extend to the hardcore model on $Q_{d,p}$, and are obtained by studying the closely related antiferromagnetic Ising model on the hypercube, which can be viewed as a positive-temperature h…
First we consider families in the hypercube $Q_n$ with bounded VC dimension. Frankl raised the problem of estimating the number $m(n,k)$ of maximal families of VC dimension $k$. Alon, Moran and Yehudayoff showed that $$n^{(1+o(1))\frac{1}{k+1}\binom{n}{k}}\leq m(n,k)\leq n^{(1+o(1))\binom{n}{k}}.$$ We close the gap by showing that $\log \left(m(n,k)\right)= {(1+o(1))\binom{n}{k}}\log n$ and show how a tight asymptotic for the logarithm of the number of induced matchings between two adjacent small layers of $Q_n$ follows as a corollary. Next, we consider the integrity $I(Q_n)$ of the hypercube,…
We derive relations between theoretical properties of restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs), popular machine learning models which form the building blocks of deep learning models, and several natural notions from discrete mathematics and convex geometry. We give implications and equivalences relating RBM-representable probability distributions, perfectly reconstructible inputs, Hamming modes, zonotopes and zonosets, point configurations in hyperplane arrangements, linear threshold codes, and multi-covering numbers of hypercubes. As a motivating application, we prove results on the relative rep…
The edge isoperimetric problem for a graph $G$ is to determine, for each $n$, the minimum number of edges leaving any set of $n$ vertices. In general this problem is NP-hard, but exact solutions are known in some special cases, for example when $G$ is the usual integer lattice. We solve the edge isoperimetric problem asymptotically for every Cayley graph on $\mathbb Z^d$. The near-optimal shapes that we exhibit are zonotopes generated by line segments corresponding to the generators of the Cayley graph.
We study the number $c_n^{(N)}$ of $n$-step self-avoiding walks on the $N$-dimensional hypercube, and identify an $N$-dependent \emph{connective constant} $μ_N$ and amplitude $A_N$ such that $c_n^{(N)}$ is $O(μ_N^n)$ for all $n$ and $N$, and is asymptotically $A_N μ_N^n$ as long as $n\le 2^{pN}$ for any fixed $p< \frac 12$. We refer to the regime $n \ll 2^{N/2}$ as the \emph{dilute phase}. We discuss conjectures concerning different behaviours of $c_n^{(N)}$ when $n$ reaches and exceeds $2^{N/2}$, corresponding to a critical window and a dense phase. In addition, we prove that the connective c…
Answering several questions of Duffus, Frankl and Rödl, we give asymptotics for the logarithms of (i) the number of maximal antichains in the n-dimensional Boolean algebra and (ii) the numbers of maximal independent sets in the covering graph of the n-dimensional hypercube and certain natural subgraphs thereof. The results in (ii) are implied by more general upper bounds on the numbers of maximal independent sets in regular and biregular graphs. We also mention some stronger possibilities involving actual rather than logarithmic asymptotics.
Let $Q_d$ be the $d$-dimensional hypercube and $N=2^d$. We prove that the number of (proper) 4-colorings of $Q_d$ is asymptotically \[6e2^N,\] as was conjectured by Engbers and Galvin in 2012. The proof uses a combination of information theory (entropy) and isoperimetric ideas originating in work of Sapozhenko in the 1980's.
We prove a generalization of Graham's Conjecture for optimal pebbling with arbitrary sets of target distributions. We provide bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of products of complete graphs and explicitly find optimal $t$-pebbling numbers for specific such products. We obtain bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of powers of the cycle $C_5$. Finally, we present explicit distributions which provide asymptotic bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of hypercubes.
A boolean function of $n$ boolean variables is {correlation-immune} of order $k$ if the function value is uncorrelated with the values of any $k$ of the arguments. Such functions are of considerable interest due to their cryptographic properties, and are also related to the orthogonal arrays of statistics and the balanced hypercube colourings of combinatorics. The {weight} of a boolean function is the number of argument values that produce a function value of 1. If this is exactly half the argument values, that is, $2^{n-1}$ values, a correlation-immune function is called {resilient}. An asymp…
A magic series is a set of natural numbers that, by virtue of its size, sum, and maximum value, could fill a row of a normal magic square. In this paper, we derive an exact two-dimensional integral representation for the number of magic series of order N. By applying the stationary phase approximation, we develop an expansion in powers of 1/N for the number of magic series and calculate the first few terms. We find excellent agreement between our approximation and the known exact values. Related results are presented for magic cube and hypercube series, bimagic series, and trimagic series.
We study additive properties of the set $S$ of bijections (or permutations) $\{1,\dots,n\}\to G$, thought of as a subset of $G^n$, where $G$ is an arbitrary abelian group of order $n$. Our main result is an asymptotic for the number of solutions to $π_1 + π_2 + π_3 = f$ with $π_1,π_2,π_3\in S$, where $f:\{1,\dots,n\}\to G$ is an arbitary function satisfying $\sum_{i=1}^n f(i) = \sum G$. This extends recent work of Manners, Mrazović, and the author. Using the same method we also prove a less interesting asymptotic for solutions to $π_1 + π_2 + π_3 + π_4 = f$, and we also show that the distribut…
