Let $K$ be a quartic CM field, that is, a totally imaginary quadratic extension of a real quadratic number field. In a 1962 article titled On the classfields obtained by complex multiplication of abelian varieties, Shimura considered a particular family $\{F_K(m) : m \in \mathbb{Z} >0 \}$ of abelian extensions of $K$, and showed that the Hilbert class field $H_K$ of $K$ is contained in $F_K(m)$ for some positive integer m. We make this m explicit. We then give an algorithm that computes a set of defining polynomials for the Hilbert class field using the field $F_K(m)$. Our proof-of-concept implementation of this algorithm computes a set of defining polynomials much faster than current implementations of the generic Kummer algorithm for certain examples of quartic CM fields.
We give examples of smooth plane quartics over $\mathbb{Q}$ with complex multiplication over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ by a maximal order with primitive CM type. We describe the required algorithms as we go, these involve the reduction of period matrices, the fast computation of Dixmier-Ohno invariants, and reconstruction from these invariants. Finally, we discuss some of the reduction properties of the curves that we obtain.
Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p=2$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Let $\varepsilon_p$ denote the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ and let $a$ be a positive square-free integer. The main aim of this paper is to determine explicitly the Hilbert genus field of the imaginary cyclic quartic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-a\varepsilon_p\sqrt{p}})$.
Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p=2$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Let $\varepsilon_p$ denote the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ and let $a$ be a positive square-free integer. In the present paper, we construct the Hilbert genus field of the real cyclic quartic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a\varepsilon_p\sqrt{p}})$.
It is shown that the quartic Fermat equation $x^4 +y^4=1$ has nontrivial integral solutions in the Hilbert class field $Σ$ of any quadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ whose discriminant satisfies $-d \equiv 1$ (mod 8). A corollary is that the quartic Fermat equation has no nontrivial solution in $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$, for $p$ $( > 7)$ a prime congruent to $7$ (mod 8), but does have a nontrivial solution in the odd degree extension $Σ$ of $K$. These solutions arise from explicit formulas for the points of order 4 on elliptic curves in Tate normal form. The solutions are studied in deta…
We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
Genus 2 curves are useful in cryptography for both discrete-log based and pairing-based systems, but a method is required to compute genus 2 curves such that the Jacobian has a given number of points. Currently, all known methods involve constructing genus 2 curves with complex multiplication via computing their three Igusa class polynomials. These polynomials have rational coefficients and require extensive computation and precision to compute. Both the computation and the complexity analysis of these algorithms can be improved by a more precise understanding of the denominators of the coeffi…
We give an explicit necessary condition for pairs of orders in a quartic CM-field to have the same polarised class group. This generalises a simpler result for imaginary quadratic fields. We give an application of our results to computing endomorphism rings of abelian surfaces over finite fields, and we use our results to extend a completeness result of Murabayashi and Umegaki to a list of abelian surfaces over the rationals with complex multiplication by arbitrary orders.
The values of the so-called {\em Dedekind--Rademacher cocycle} at certain real quadratic arguments are shown to be global $p$-units in the narrow Hilbert class field of the associated real quadratic field, as predicted by conjectures of Darmon, Dasgupta, and Vonk. The strategy for proving this result combines an approach of Darmon-Pozzi-Vonk with one crucial extra ingredient: the study of infinitesimal deformations of irregular Hilbert Eisenstein series of weight one in the anti-parallel direction, building on the techniques in earlier work of Betina, Dimitrov, and Pozzi.
We give a construction of unramified cyclic octic extensions of certain complex quadratic number fields. The binary quadratic form used in this construction also shows up in the theory of 2-descents on Pell conics and elliptic curves, as well as in the explicit description of cyclic quartic extensions.
Let us consider the pure quartic fields of the form $\K=\Q(\sqrt[4]{p})$ where $0<p\equiv 7\pmod{16}$ is a prime integer. We prove that the $2$-class group of $\K$ has order $2$. As a consequence of this, if the class number of $\K$ is $2$, then the Hilbert class field of $\K$ is $\H_\K=\K(\sqrt{2})$. Finally, we find a criterion to decide if an ideal of the ring of integers or $\K$ is principal or non-principal.
We prove, assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis, the Andre-Oort conjecture for Hilbert modular surfaces. More precisely, let K be a real quadratic field and let S be the coarse moduli space of complex abelian surfaces with multiplications by the ring of integers of K. Let C be an irreducible closed curve in S, and suppose that C contains infinitely many complex multiplication points. Then we prove, assuming GRH, that C is of Hodge type, meaning, in this case, that it parametrizes abelian varieties with more endomorphisms. Also, if we assume that C has infinitely many CM points that corre…
This is the text of an article that I wrote and disseminated in September 1981, except that I've updated the references, corrected a few misprints, and added a table of contents, some footnotes, and an addendum. The original article gave a simplified exposition of Deligne's extension of the Main Theorem of Complex Multiplication to all automorphisms of the complex numbers. The addendum discusses some additional topics in the theory of complex multiplication -- the origins of the theory, Hilbert's Twelfth Problem, why algebraic Hecke characters are motivic, and the periods of abelian varieties …
One can define class invariants for a quartic primitive CM field K as special values of certain Siegel (or Hilbert) modular functions at CM points corresponding to K. We provide explicit bounds on the primes appearing in the denominators of these algebraic numbers. This allows us, in particular, to construct S-units in certain abelian extensions of K, where S is effectively determined by K. It also yields class polynomials for primitive quartic CM fields whose coefficients are S-integers.
We compute equations for real multiplication on the divisor classes of genus two curves via algebraic correspondences. We do so by implementing van Wamelen's method for computing equations for endomorphisms of Jacobians on examples drawn from the algebraic models for Hilbert modular surfaces computed by Elkies and Kumar. We also compute a correspondence over the universal family for the Hilbert modular surface of discriminant 5 and use our equations to prove a conjecture of A. Wright on dynamics over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces.
Let $q$ be any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 16$, $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, and let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$. Let $A/H$ be the Gross elliptic curve defined over $H$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of $K$. We prove the existence of a large explicit infinite family of quadratic twists of $A$ whose complex $L$-series does not vanish at $s=1$. This non-vanishing theorem is completely new when $q > 7$. Its proof depends crucially on the results established in our earlier paper for the Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ of the abelian variety $B/K$, which is the restriction…
The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ to prove non-vanishing theorems for the value at $s=1$ of the complex $L$-series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field $K = \BQ(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 8$. Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non-vanishing theorem first proven by D. Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non-vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell-Weil group and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the cor…
Let zeta5 be a primitive fifth root of unity and d<>1 be a quadratic fundamental discriminant not divisible by 5. For the 5-dual cyclic quartic field M=Q((zeta5-zeta5^-1)*d^1/2) of the quadratic fields k1=Q(d^1/2) and k2=Q((5*d)^1/2) in the sense of the quintic reflection theorem, the possibilities for the isomophism type of the Galois group G(5,2)M=Gal(M(5,2)/M) of the second Hilbert 5-class field M(5,2) of M are investigated, when the 5-class group Cl5(M) is elementary bicyclic of rank two. Usually, the maximal unramified pro-5-extension M(5,infinity) of M coincides with M(5,2) already. The …
It is proved that the Hilbert class field of a real quadratic field ${\Bbb Q}(\sqrt{D})$ modulo a power $m$ of the conductor $f$ is generated by the Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenform for a congruence subgroup of level $fD$.
Let E be an elliptic curve having Complex Multiplication by the full ring O_K of integers of K=Q(\sqrt{-D}), let H=K(j(E)) be the Hilbert class field of K. Then the Mordell-Weil group E(H) is an O_K-module, and its structure denpends on its Steinitz class St(E), which is studied here. In partucular, when D is a prime number, it is proved that St(E)=1 if D\equiv 3 (mod 4); and St(E)=[P]^t if D\equiv 1 (mod 4), where [P] is the ideal class of K represented by prime factor P of 2 in K, t is a fixed integer. General structures are also discussed for St(E) and for modules over Dedekind domain. Thes…
This is the first of a series of two papers in which we present a solution to Manin's Real Multiplication program -- an approach to Hilbert's 12th problem for real quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ -- in positive characteristic, using quantum analogs of the exponential function and the modular invariant. In this first paper, we treat the problem of Hilbert class field generation. If $k=\mathbb{F}_{q}(T)$ and $k_{\infty}$ is the analytic completion of $k$, we introduce the quantum modular invariant \[ j^{\rm qt}: k_{\infty}\multimap k_{\infty}\] as a multivalued, modular invariant function. …
In this paper we give some evidence for the Tate (and Hodge) conjecture(s) for a class of Hilbert modular fourfolds X, whose connected components arise as arithmetic quotients of the fourfold product of the upper half plane by congruence subgroups Γof SL(2, O_K), where O_K denotes the ring of integers of a quartic, Galois, totally real number field K. The expected relationship to the orders of poles of the associated L-functions is verified for abelian extensions of \Q. Also shown is the existence of homologically non-trivial cycles of codimension two which are not intersections of divisors.
Let $p$ be an unramified prime in a totally real field $L$ such that $h^+(L)=1$. Our main result shows that Hilbert modular newforms of parallel weight two for $Γ_0(p)$ can be constructed naturally, via classical theta series, from modules of isogenies of superspecial abelian varieties with real multiplication on a Hilbert moduli space. This can be viewed as a geometric reinterpretation of the Eichler Basis Problem for Hilbert modular forms.
We construct a natural family of rational functions $\tildeΨ_m$ on a Hilbert modular surface from the classical $j$-invariant and its Hecke translates. These functions are obtained by means of a multiplicative analogue of the Doi-Naganuma lifting and can be viewed as twisted Borcherds products. We then study when the value of $\tildeΨ_m$ at a CM point associated to a non-biquadratic quartic CM field generates the `CM class field' of the reflex field. For the real quadratic field $\Q(\sqrt{5})$, we factorize the norm of some of these CM values to $\Q(\sqrt 5)$ numerically.
In the theory of complex multiplication, it is important to construct class fields over CM fields. In this paper, we consider explicit $K3$ surfaces parametrized by Klein's icosahedral invariants. Via the periods and the Shioda-Inose structures of $K3$ surfaces, the special values of icosahedral invariants generate class fields over quartic CM fields. Moreover, we give an explicit expression of the canonical model of the Shimura variety for the simplest case via the periods of $K3$ surfaces.
Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for an intersection number on the arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, CM(K).T_m, where CM(K) is the zero-cycle of points corresponding to abelian surfaces with CM by a primitive quartic CM field K, and T_m is the Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors parameterizing products of elliptic curves with an m-isogeny between them. In this paper, we examine fields not covered by Yang's proof of the conjecture. We give numerical evidence to support the conjecture and point to some interesting anomalies. We compare the conjecture to both the denominators of Igusa class polyn…
This paper is about the arithmetic of Kudla-Rapoport divisors on Shimura varieties of type GU(n-1,1). In the first part of the paper we construct a toroidal compactification of N. Kramer's integral model of the Shimura variety. This extends work of K.-W. Lan, who constructed a compactification at unramified primes. In the second, and main, part of the paper we use ideas of Kudla to construct Green functions for the Kudla-Rapoport divisors on the open Shimura variety, and analyze the behavior of these functions near the boundary of the compactification. The Green functions turn out to have loga…
The geometric torsion conjecture asserts that the torsion part of the Mordell--Weil group of a family of abelian varieties over a complex quasiprojective curve is uniformly bounded in terms of the genus of the curve. We prove the conjecture for abelian varieties with real multiplication, uniformly in the field of multiplication. Fixing the field, we furthermore show that the torsion is bounded in terms of the $\mathit{gonality}$ of the base curve, which is the closer analog of the arithmetic conjecture. The proof is a hybrid technique employing both the hyperbolic and algebraic geometry of the…
