We investigate polariton quantum correlations in a coherently driven box cavity in the low driving regime, with a particular focus on accounting for the polarization degree of freedom. The possibility of having different interaction strengths between co- and cross-circularly polarized polaritons as well as a realistic linear-polarization splitting allows one to model the system as two coupled nonlinear resonators with both self- and cross-Kerr-like nonlinearities, thus making our results potentially relevant for other experimental platforms. Within an effective wave-function approach, we obtain analytical expressions for the steady-state polarization-resolved polariton populations and second-order correlation functions, which agree very well with our numerical results obtained from a Lindblad master equation. Notably, we highlight that depending on the excitation polarization (circular or linear), both the unconventional (interference-mediated) and conventional (mediated by nonlinearities) antibunchings can be investigated in a single cavity. Moreover, using our results, we argue that recent experiments on confined fiber-cavity polaritons are likely to have probed a regime where the dominant interaction is between cross-polarized polaritons, which is characteristic of the polariton Feshbach resonance. We furthermore investigate the regime close to resonance using a two-channel model, and we show that systems with large biexciton binding energies, such as atomically thin semiconductors, are promising platforms for realizing strong polariton antibunching.
Cavity-polaritons in semiconductor microstructures have emerged as a promising system for exploring nonequilibrium dynamics of many-body systems. Key advances in this field, including the observation of polariton condensation, superfluidity, realization of topological photonic bands, and dissipative phase transitions, generically allow for a description based on a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii formalism. While observation of polariton intensity squeezing and decoherence of a polarization entangled photon pair by a polariton condensate provide counter-examples, quantum effects in these experiment…
We investigate exciton-polariton condensation under magnetic field in a single high-quality semiconductor micropillar cavity. We observe successive polariton condensation of each spin component for two distinct threshold powers. Pronounced and non-monotonous variations of both the Zeeman splitting and the circular polarization of the emission are measured across these two condensation thresholds. This unexpected behavior deeply deviates from the so-called spin Meissner effect predicted for a fully thermalized system. Our measurements can be understood in a kinetic approach taking into account …
We present a microscopic semi-analytical theory for the description of organic molecules interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Exciton-vibration coupling within the molecule and exciton-cavity interaction are treated on an equal footing by employing a temperature-dependent variational approach. The interplay between strong exciton-vibration coupling and strong exciton-cavity coupling gives rise to a hybrid ground state, which we refer to as the lower polaron polariton. Explicit expressions for the ground-state wave function, the zero-temperature quasiparticle weight of the lower polaron pol…
We apply a microscopic theory of exciton-polaritons in cavity-confined monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides including both optical polarizations in the monolayer plane, allowing to describe how chiral cavity photons interact with the valley degrees of freedom of the active material. Upon polariton formation, the degenerate excitons inhabiting the two inequivalent valleys are shown to assume bonding and antibonding superpositions as a result of cavity-mediated intravalley interactions combined with intervalley Coulomb interactions. This is representative of a polariton-induced coherent mi…
Electromagnetic field confinement is crucial for nanophotonic technologies, since it allows for enhancing light-matter interactions, thus enabling light manipulation in deep sub-wavelength scales. In the terahertz (THz) spectral range, radiation confinement is conventionally achieved with specially designed metallic structures - such as antennas or nanoslits - with large footprints due to the rather long wavelengths of THz radiation. In this context, phonon polaritons - light coupled to lattice vibrations - in van der Waals (vdW) crystals have emerged as a promising solution for controlling li…
As one of the most fundamental optical phenomena, refraction between isotropic media is characterized by light bending towards the normal to the boundary when passing from a low- to a high-refractive-index medium. However, in anisotropic media, refraction is a much more exotic phenomenon. The most general case of refraction between two anisotropic media remains unexplored, particularly in natural media and at the nanoscale. Here, we visualize and comprehensively study refraction of electromagnetic waves between two strongly anisotropic (hyperbolic) media, and, importantly, we do it with the us…
Cavity-polaritons in semiconductor photonic structures have emerged as a test bed for exploring non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum fluids in an integrated solid-state device setting. Several recent experiments demonstrated the potential of these systems for revealing quantum many-body physics in driven-dissipative systems. So far, all experiments have relied on fully integrated devices with little to no flexibility for modification of device properties. Here, we present a novel approach for realizing confined cavity-polaritons that enables in-situ tuning of the cavity length and thereby of th…
We report on confined exciton resonances of acoustic and folded acoustic phonon light scattering in a GaAs/AlAs multi-quantum-well. Significant variations of the line shifts and widths are observed across the resonance and quantitatively reproduced in terms of the polariton dispersion. This high resolution Brillouin study brings new unexpectedly detailed informations on the polariton dynamics in confined systems.

We investigate the optical orientation, polarization pinning, and depolarization of optically confined semiconductor exciton-polariton condensates. We perform a complete mapping of the condensate polarization as a function of incident nonresonant excitation polarization and power. We utilize a ring-shaped excitation pattern to generate an exciton-induced potential that spatially confines polariton condensates into a single mode. We observe that formation of circular polarization in the condensate persists even for a weakly cocircularly polarized pump. By varying the excitation ring diameter we…
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a natural hyperbolic material that supports both volume-confined hyperbolic polaritons (HPs) and sidewall-confined hyperbolic surface polaritons (HSPs). In this work, we demonstrate effective excitation, control and steering of HSPs in hBN through engineering the geometry and orientation of hBN sidewalls. By combining infrared (IR) nano-imaging and numerical simulations, we investigate the reflection, transmission and scattering of HSPs at the hBN corners with various apex angles. We show that the sidewall-confined nature of HSPs enables a high degree of contro…
Microcavity polaritons are light-matter quasiparticles that arise from the strong coupling between excitons and photons confined in a semiconductor microcavity. They typically operate at visible or near visible wavelengths. They combine the properties of confined electromagnetic fields, including a sizeable spin-orbit coupling, and the sensitivity to external magnetic fields and particle interactions inherited from their partly matter nature. These features make polaritons an excellent platform to study topological phases in photonics in one and two dimensional lattices, which band properties …
Strongly anisotropic media where the principal components of the dielectric tensor have opposite signs are called hyperbolic. Such materials length exhibit unique nanophotonic properties enabled by the highly directional propagation of slow-light modes localized at deeply sub-diffractional scales. While artificial hyperbolic metamaterials have been demonstrated, they suffer from high plasmonic losses and require complex nanofabrication, which in turn induces the size-dependent limitations on optical confinement. The low-loss, mid-infrared, natural hyperbolic material, hexagonal boron nitride i…
We report on the quantum confinement of zero-dimensional polaritons in perovskite-based microcavity at room temperature. Photoluminescence of discrete polaritonic states are observed for polariton localized in symmetric sphere-like defects which are spontaneously nucleated on the top dielectric Bragg mirror. The linewidth of these confined states are found much sharper (almost one order of magnitude) than that of photonic modes in the perovskite planar microcavity. Our results show the possibility to study organic-inorganic cavity polariton in confined microstructure and suggest a fabrication …
We report on pure-quantum-state polariton condensates in optical annular traps. The study of the underlying mechanism reveals that the polariton wavefunction always coalesces in a single pure-quantum-state that, counter-intuitively, is always the uppermost confined state with the highest overlap to the exciton reservoir. The tunability of such states combined with the short polariton lifetime allows for ultrafast transitions between coherent mesoscopic wavefunctions of distinctly different symmetries rendering optically confined polariton condensates a promising platform for applications such …
The formation and propagation of a polariton condensate under tightly focused excitation is investigated in a ZnO microcavity both experimentally and theoretically. 2D near-field and far-field images of the condensate are measured under quasi-continuous non-resonant excitation. The corresponding spatial profiles are compared to a model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation under cylindrical geometry. This work allows to connect the experiments performed with a small excitation laser spot and the previous kinetic models of condensation in a 2D infinite microcavity, and to determine the relevan…
We investigate theoretically the polariton coupling between the light confined in a planar cavity and the intersubband transitions of a two-dimensional electron gas confined in semiconductor quantum wells in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. We show that in heterostructures made of non-parabolic semiconductors, the polaritons do not fit a two-level problem, since the cavity photons couple to a non-degenerate ensemble of intersubband transitions. As a consequence, the stationary polariton eigenstates become very sensitive to the vertical magnetic field, which thus plays the role of an …
We study the emission properties of confined polariton states in shallow zero-dimensional traps under non-resonant excitation. We evidence several relaxation regimes. For slightly negative photon-exciton detuning, we observe a nonlinear increase of the emission intensity, characteristic of carrier-carrier scattering assisted relaxation under strong-coupling regime. This demonstrates the efficient relaxation towards a confined state of the system. For slightly positive detuning, we observe the transition from strong to weak coupling regime and then to single-mode lasing.
We demonstrate the spatial confinement of electronic excitations in a solid state system, within novel artificial structures that can be designed having arbitrary dimensionality and shape. The excitations under study are exciton-polaritons in a planar semiconductor microcavity. They are confined within a micron-sized region through lateral trapping of their photon component. Striking signatures of confined states of lower and upper polaritons are found in angle-resolved light emission spectra, where a discrete energy spectrum and broad angular patterns are present. A theoretical model supports…
We develop a quantum model for the calculation of the gain of phonon-polariton intersubband lasers. The polaritonic gain arizes from the interaction between the electrons confined in a quantum well structure and the phonon confined in one layer of the material. Our theoretical approach is based on expressing the crucial matter excitations (intersubband electrons and phonons) in terms of polarisation densities in second quantisation, and treating all non-resonant polarisations with an effective dielectric function. The interaction between the electronic and phononic polarizations is treated per…
We describe a design to implement a two-qubit geometric phase gate, by which a pair of electrons confined in adjacent quantum dots are entangled. The entanglement is a result of the Coulomb exchange interaction between the optically excited exciton-polaritons and the localized spins. This optical coupling, resembling the electron-electron Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) inter- actions, offers high speed, high fidelity two-qubit gate operation with moderate cavity quality factor Q. The errors due to the finite lifetime of the polaritons can be minimized by optimizing the optical pulse para…
Spin transitions are studied theoretically and experimentally in a resonantly excited system of cavity polaritons in a magnetic field. Weak pair interactions in this boson system make possible fast and massive spin flips occurring at critical amplitudes due to the interplay between amplitude dependent shifts of eigenstates and the Zeeman splitting. Dominant spin of a condensate can be toggled forth and back by tuning of the pump intensity only, which opens the way for ultra-fast spin switchings of polariton condensates on a picosecond timescale.
Semiconductor microresonators embedding quantum wells can host tightly confined and mutually interacting excitonic, optical and mechanical modes at once. We theoretically investigate the case where the system operates in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime, while the optical and excitonic resonances are parametrically modulated by the interaction with a mechanical mode. Owing to the large exciton-phonon coupling at play in semiconductors, we predict an enhancement of polariton-phonon interactions by two orders of magnitude with respect to mere optomechanical coupling: a near-unity single…
We report the first observation of stochastic resonance in confined exciton-polaritons. We evidence this phenomena by tracking the polaritons behavior through two stochastic resonance quantifiers namely the spectral magnification factor and the signal-to-noise ratio. The evolution of the stochastic resonance in function of the modulation amplitude of the periodic excitation signal is studied. Our experimental observations are well reproduced by numerical simulations performed in the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation under stochastic perturbation.
We investigate the effect of a polariton bath on the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the elementary excitations for a confined nanocavity-quantum dot (nC-QD) system. We modeled the nC-QD system as a two-level exciton in strong coupling with a single photonic cavity mode interacting with its environment. The non-hamiltonian processes induced by the environment are taken into account via a Born-Markov master equation which includes: gain and loss of excitons and photons into/out of the cavity, a dephasing mechanism produced by phonon scattering in the semiconductor lattice and gain and loss o…
Exciton-polaritons are mutually interacting quantum hybridizations of confined photons and electronic excitations. Here we demonstrate a system of optically guided, electrically polarized exciton-polaritons ('dipolaritons') that displays up to 200-fold enhancement of the polariton-polariton interaction strength compared to unpolarized polaritons. The magnitude of the dipolar interaction enhancement can be turned on and off and be easily tuned over a very wide range by varying the applied polarizing electric-field. The very large interaction strengths and the very long propagation distances of …
We theoretically propose a biphoton entanglement-enhanced multidimensional spectroscopic technique as a probe for the dissipative polariton dynamics in the ultrafast regime. It is applied to the cavity-confined monomeric photosynthetic complex that represents a prototypical multi-site excitonic quantum aggregate. The proposed technique is shown to be particularly sensitive to inter-manifold polariton coherence between the two and one-excitation subspaces. It is demonstrated to be able to monitor the dynamical role of cavity-mediated excitonic correlations, and dephasing in the presence of phon…
We consider the system of a quantum well embedded in a planar semiconductor microcavity with a shallow circular mesa patterned on top of the cavity spacer. For this system we develop the linear coupling theory of polaritons. We then compute polariton eigenstates and the corresponding optical spectrum. The theory predicts the existence of laterally confined polariton states with a discrete energy spectrum, as well as continuum states above the finite mesa potential barrier.
We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic …
We have designed and fabricated all-epitaxial ZnSe-based optical micropillars exhibiting the strong coupling regime between the excitonic transition and the confined optical cavity modes. At cryogenic temperatures, under non-resonant pulsed optical excitation, we demonstrate single transverse mode polariton lasing operation in the micropillars. Owing to the high quality factors of these microstructures, the lasing threshold remains low even in micropillars of the smallest diameter. We show that this feature can be traced back to a sidewall roughness grain size below 3 nm, and to suppressed in-…
We study the polarization optical properties of microcavities with embedded (110)-oriented quantum wells. The spin dynamics of exciton polaritons in such structures is governed by the interplay of the spin-orbit splitting of exciton states, which is odd in the in-plane momentum, and the longitudinal-transverse splitting of cavity modes, which is even in the momentum. We demonstrate the generation of polariton spin currents by linearly polarized optical pump and analyze the arising polariton spin textures in the cavity plane. Tuning the excitation spot size, which controls the polariton distrib…
In the present work, we theoretically demonstrate, for the first time, that near field radiative transport between 1D periodic grating microstructures separated by subwavelength vacuum gaps can be significantly enhanced by exciting magnetic resonance or polariton. Fluctuational electrodynamics that incorporates scattering matrix theory with rigorous coupled wave analysis is employed to exactly calculate the near field radiative heat flux between two SiC gratings. Besides the well known coupled surface phonon polaritons (SPhP), an additional spectral radiative heat flux peak, which is due to ma…
We propose two schemes of a novel spin-optronic device, optical analog of Datta and Das spin transistor for the electrons. The role of ferromagnetic contacts is played by one-dimensional polariton channels with strong TE-TM splitting. A symmetric 2D trap plays a role of the non-magnetic active region. The rotation of the polarization of the pulse in this region can be achieved either due to its interaction with a spatially confined polariton condensate created resonantly by a circular polarized laser, either due to the splitting between the two linear polarizations of the excitons, controlled …
We report on the study of a polariton gas confined in a quasi-periodic one dimensional cavity, described by a Fibonacci sequence. Imaging the polariton modes both in real and reciprocal space, we observe features characteristic of their fractal energy spectrum such as the opening of mini-gaps obeying the gap labeling theorem and log-periodic oscillations of the integrated density of states. These observations are accurately reproduced solving an effective 1D Schrödinger equation, illustrating the potential of cavity polaritons as a quantum simulator in complex topological geometries.
We keep track of the orbital degree of freedom of an exciton polariton condensate, confined in an optical trap, and reveal the stochastic switching of persistent annular polariton currents in the pulse-periodic excitation regime. In an elliptic trap, the low-lying in energy polariton current states are inherent in a two-petalled density distribution and swirling phase. In the stochastic regime, the averaged over multiple excitation pulses density distribution gets homogenised in the azimuthal direction, while the weighted phase extracted from interference experiments experiences two compensatin…
We predict that the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling, stemming from the TE-TM energy splitting, and the Zeeman effect in semiconductor microcavities supporting exci- ton-polariton quasi-particles results in the appearance of unidirectional linear topological edge states when the top microcavity mirror is patterned to form a truncated dislocated Lieb lattice of cylindrical pillars. Periodic nonlinear edge states are found to emerge from the linear ones. They are strongly localized across the interface and they are remarkably robust in comparison to their counterparts in hexagonal latti…
We report an extended family of spin textures in coexisting modes of zero-dimensional polariton condensates spatially confined in tunable open microcavity structures. The coupling between photon spin and angular momentum, which is enhanced in the open cavity structures, leads to new eigenstates of the polariton condensates carrying quantised spin vortices. Depending on the strength and anisotropy of the cavity confinement potential and the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, which can be tuned via the excitonic/photonic fractions, the condensate emissions exhibit either spin-vortex-like patte…
The regime of ultrastrong light-matter interaction has been investigated theoretically and experimentally, using zero-dimensional electromagnetic resonators coupled with an electronic transition between two confined states of a semiconductor quantum well. We have measured a splitting between the coupled modes that amounts to 48% of the energy transition, the highest ratio ever observed in a light-matter coupled system. Our analysis, based on a microscopic quantum theory, shows that the nonlinear polariton splitting, a signature of this regime, is a dynamical effect arising from the self-intera…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, known for exhibiting strong excitonic resonances, constitute a very interesting and versatile platform for investigation of light-matter interactions. In this work we report on a strong coupling regime between excitons in monolayer WSe2 and photons confined in an open, voltage-tunable dielectric microcavity. The tunability of our system allows us to extend the exciton-polariton state over a wide energy range and, in particular, to bring the excitonic component of the lower polariton mode into resonance with other excitonic transitions in monolayer WS…
Surface plasmon-polaritons in a multilayer structure consisting of a metallic film and one or more layers of nanocrystal (NC) quantum dots (QDs) are studied. It is shown that there is resonance coupling between the plasmon-polaritons propagating along the metal/NC-layer interface and excitons confined in the dots, which makes a considerable effect on the optical properties of the structure unless the dispersion of the QD size is too large. This coupling can be explored in order to selectively excite QDs of different size by using an attenuated total reflection (ATR) structure. It opens the pos…
Collective (elementary) excitations of quantum bosonic condensates, including condensates of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, are a sensitive probe of interparticle interactions. In anisotropic microcavities with momentum-dependent TE-TM splitting of the optical modes, the excitations dispersions are predicted to be strongly anisotropic, which is a consequence of the synthetic magnetic gauge field of the cavity, as well as the interplay between different interaction strengths for polaritons in the singlet and triplet spin configurations. Here, by directly measuring the disper…
