Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}$ be a bounded domain such that there exists an algebraic harmonic function of degree two vanishing on the boundary of $Ω.$ Then we show that the Khavinson-Shapiro conjecture holds for $Ω:$ if the Dirichlet problem on $Ω$ with all polynomial boundary data have polynomial solutions, then $Ω$ must be an ellipse. We also prove that if there exists a rational function with a singularity in $Ω$, such that the Dirichlet problem for its restriction on $\partialΩ$ along with all polynomial functions have rational solutions, then $Ω$ must be a disc. This generalizes a well-known result by Bell, Ebenfelt, Khavinson, and Shapiro. Our proofs are purely algebraic.
We give an elementary proof of an analogue of Fejér's theorem in weighted Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights. This provides a simple way of seeing that polynomials are dense in such spaces.
We study the supremum of some random Dirichlet polynomials and obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for supremum expectation that extend the optimal estimate of Halász-Queffélec and enable to cunstruct random polynomials with unusually small maxima. Our approach in proving these results is entirely based on methods of stochastic processes, in particular the metric entropy method.
Consider the Dirichlet-type space on the bidisk consisting of holomorphic functions $f(z_1,z_2):=\sum_{k,l\geq 0}a_{kl}z_1^kz_2^l$ such that $\sum_{k,l\geq 0}(k+1)^{α_1} (l+1)^{α_2}|a_{kl}|^2 <\infty.$ Here the parameters $α_1,α_2$ are arbitrary real numbers. We characterize the polynomials that are cyclic for the shift operators on this space. More precisely, we show that, given an irreducible polynomial $p(z_1,z_2)$ depending on both $z_1$ and $z_2$ and having no zeros in the bidisk: if $α_1+α_2\leq 1$, then $p$ is cyclic; if $α_1+α_2>1$ and $\min\{α_1,α_2\}\leq 1$, then $p$ is cyclic if and…
We study the supremum of some random Dirichlet polynomials with independent coefficients and obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for supremum expectation thus extending the results from our previous work (see http://arXiv.org/abs/math/0703691). Our approach in proving these results is entirely based on methods of stochastic processes, in particular the metric entropy method.
We introduce new functional spaces that generalize the weighted Bergman and Dirichlet spaces on the disk D(0,R) in the complex plane and the Bargmann-Fock spaces on the whole complex plane. We give a complete description of the considered spaces. Mainly, we are interested in giving explicit formulas for their reproducing kernel functions and their asymptotic behavior as R goes to infinity.
We characterize the uniform limits of Dirichlet polynomials on a right half plane. In the Dirichlet setting, we find approximation results, with respect to the Euclidean distance and {to} the chordal one as well, analogous to classical results of Runge, Mergelyan and Vitushkin. We also strengthen the notion of universal Dirichlet series.
Let $1 \leq p < q < \infty$. We show that \[ \sup{\frac{\left\| D\right\|_{\mathcal{H}_{q}}}{\left\| D\right\|_{\mathcal{H}_{p}}}} = \exp{\left( \frac{\log{x}}{\log{\log{x}}} \left(\log{\sqrt{\frac{q}{p}}} + \left(\frac{\log{\log{\log{x}}}}{\log{\log{x}}}\right)\right) \right)} \,,\] where the supremum is taken over all non-zero Dirichlet polynomials of the form $D(s)=\sum_{n \leq x}{a_{n} n^{-s}}$. An aplication is given to the study of multipliers between Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series.
We consider the Dirichlet problem for solutions to general second-order homogeneous elliptic equations with constant complex coefficients. We prove that any Jordan domain with $C^{1,α}$-smooth boundary, $0<α<1$, is not regular with respect to the Dirichlet problem for any not strongly elliptic equation $\mathcal Lf=0$ of this kind, which means that for any such domain $G$ it always exists a continuous function on the boundary of $G$ that can not be continuously extended to the domain under consideration to a function satisfying the equation $\mathcal Lf=0$ therein. Since there exists a Jordan …
We prove an analogue of the Lagrange Inversion Theorem for Dirichlet series. The proof is based on studying properties of Dirichlet convolution polynomials, which are analogues of convolution polynomials introduced by Knuth in [4].
As continuation of the study of polynomial approximation and composition operators on Dirichlet spaces of unit disk, which has settled a problem posed by Cima in 1976, the present paper aims to consider the case of the unbounded domains, such as the half-plane. Specifically, we may obtain the rational approximations in the Dirichlet spaces and characterize the composition operators which has dense range on the Dirichlet spaces over the half-plane. Moreover, this paper also considers the relationship between the Dirichlet spaces and Hardy spaces on half-plane.
We examine the algebra of all Dirichlet Series bounded on the right half plane. We consider the analogue of the Corona theorem in this setting, and show that it is false, i.e. the right half-plane is not dense in the maximal ideal space. We also prove some refinements of the Hille-Bohnenblust theorem, where both probabilistic and deterministic devices are used, and we show how the proof is carried out for each.
In this paper, we introduce a general class of weighted spaces of holomorphic Dirichlet series (with real frequencies) analytic in some half-plane and study composition operators on these spaces. In the particular case when the symbol inducing the composition operator is an affine function, we give criteria for boundedness and compactness. We also study the cyclicity property and as a byproduct give a sufficient condition so that the direct sum of the identity plus a weighted forward shift operator on the Hardy space H^2 is cyclic.
For functions $f$ in Dirichlet-type spaces we study how to determine constructively optimal polynomials $p_n$ that minimize $\|p f-1\|_α$ among all polynomials $p$ of degree at most $n$. Then we give upper and lower bounds for the rate of decay of $\|p_{n}f-1\|_α$ as $n$ approaches $\infty$. Further, we study a generalization of a weak version of the Brown-Shields conjecture and some computational phenomena about the zeros of optimal polynomials.
This paper establishes connections between the boundary behaviour of functions representable as absolutely convergent Dirichlet series in a half-plane and the convergence properties of partial sums of the Dirichlet series on the boundary. This yields insights into the boundary behaviour of Dirichlet series and Taylor series which have universal approximation properties.
We study Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathfrak{D}_α$ of analytic functions in the unit bidisk and their cyclic elements. These are the functions $f$ for which there exists a sequence $(p_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of polynomials in two variables such that $\|p_nf-1\|_α\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. We obtain a number of conditions that imply cyclicity, and obtain sharp estimates on the best possible rate of decay of the norms $\|p_nf-1\|_α$, in terms of the degree of $p_n$, for certain classes of functions using results concerning Hilbert spaces of functions of one complex variable and comparisons between norms …
The Dirichlet--Hardy space $\Ht$ consists of those Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ for which $\sum_n |a_n|^2<\infty$. It is shown that the Blaschke condition in the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>1/2$ is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nontrivial function $f$ in $\Ht$ vanishing on a given bounded sequence. The proof implies in fact a stronger result: every function in the Hardy space $H^2$ of the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>1/2$ can be interpolated by a function in $\Ht$ on such a Blaschke sequence. Analogous results are proved for the Hilbert space $\Da$ …
We study connections between orthogonal polynomials, reproducing kernel functions, and polynomials $p$ minimizing Dirichlet-type norms $\|pf-1\|_α$ for a given function $f$. For $α\in [0,1]$ (which includes the Hardy and Dirichlet spaces of the disk) and general $f$, we show that such extremal polynomials are non-vanishing in the closed unit disk. For negative $α$, the weighted Bergman space case, the extremal polynomials are non-vanishing on a disk of strictly smaller radius, and zeros can move inside the unit disk. We also explain how $\mathrm{dist}_{D_α}(1,f\cdot \mathcal{P}_n)$, where $\ma…
We prove effective results on when a function can be approximated by a Dirichlet polynomial with bounded coefficients. Assuming that Φ(n) is an increasing function we prove that the set of polynomials {\sum_{n=2}^N a_n n^{it-1}: N \geq 2, |a_n| \leq Φ(n)}, is dense in L^2(0,H) if and only if \sum_{n=2}^\infty \frac{\log Φ(n)} {n \log^2 n} = \infty. We also prove variants of this result for generalized Dirichlet polynomials. The main tools are theorems of Paley and Wiener related to quasianalyticity and the Pechersky rearrangement theorem. We use this result to give precise conditions on when a…
We characterize model polynomials that are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$, and we give a sufficient capacity condition in order to identify non-cyclic vectors.
The $L^q$ norm of a Dirichlet polynomial $F(s)=\sum_{n=1}^{N} a_n n^{-s}$ is defined as \[\| F\|_q:=(\lim_{T\to\infty}\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^T |F(it)|^qdt)^{1/q}\] for $0<q<\infty$. It is shown that \[ (\sum_{n=1}^{N} |a_n|^2|μ(n)|[d(n)]^{\frac{\log q}{\log 2} -1})^{1/2}\le \| F\|_q \] when $0<q<2$; here $μ$ is the Möbius function and $d$ the divisor function. This result is used to prove that the $L^q$ norm of $D_N(s):=\sum_{n=1}^{N} n^{-1/2-s}$ satisfies $\|D_N\|_q\gg (\log N)^{q/4}$ for $0<q<\infty$. By Helson's generalization of the M. Riesz theorem on the conjugation operator, the reverse in…
We give a complete characterization of polynomials in two complex variables that are cyclic with respect to the coordinate shifts acting on Dirichlet-type spaces in the bidisk, which include the Hardy space and the Dirichlet space of the bidisk. The cyclicity of a polynomial depends on both the size and nature of the zero set of the polynomial on the distinguished boundary. The techniques in the proof come from real analytic function theory, determinantal representations for stable polynomials, and harmonic analysis on curves
We denote by $\Hp$ the Hilbert space of ordinary Dirichlet series with square-summable coefficients. The main result is that a bounded sequence of points in the half-plane $σ>1/2$ is an interpolating sequence for $\Hp$ if and only if it is an interpolating sequence for the Hardy space $H^2$ of the same half-plane. Similar local results are obtained for Hilbert spaces of ordinary Dirichlet series that relate to Bergman and Dirichlet spaces of the half-plane $σ>1/2$.
In the context of the correspondence between real functions on the unit circle and inner analytic functions within the open unit disk, that was presented in previous papers, we show that the constructions used to establish that correspondence lead to very general proofs of existence of solutions of the Dirichlet problem on the plane. At first, this establishes the existence of solutions for almost arbitrary integrable real functions on the unit circle, including functions which are discontinuous and unbounded. The proof of existence is then generalized to a large class of non-integrable real f…
Let $P_{2k}$ be a homogeneous polynomial of degree $2k$ and assume that there exist $C>0$, $D>0$ and $α\ge 0$ such that \begin{equation*} \left\langle P_{2k}f_{m},f_{m}\right\rangle_{L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})}\geq \frac{1}{C\left( m+D\right) ^{α}}\left\langle f_{m},f_{m}\right\rangle_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} \end{equation*} for all homogeneous polynomials $f_{m}$ of degree $m.$ Assume that $P_{j}$ for $j=0, \dots ,β<2k$ are homogeneous polynomials of degree $j$. The main result of the paper states that for any entire function $f$ of order $% ρ<\left( 2k-β\right) /α$ there exist entire functions $q$ and …
We prove joint universality theorems on the half plane of absolute convergence for general classes of Dirichlet series with an Euler-product, where in addition to vertical shifts we also allow scaling. This generalizes our recent joint universality results for Dirichlet $L$-functions. In contrast to classical universality, we do not need that the Dirichlet series in question have an analytic continuation beyond their region of absolute convergence. Also we may allow weaker orthogonality conditions for pairs of Dirichlet series than in the previous joint universality results of Lee-Nakamura-Pań…
We observe that local embedding problems for certain Hardy and Bergman spaces of Dirichlet series are equivalent to boundedness of a class of composition operators. Following this, we perform a careful study of such composition operators generated by polynomial symbols $φ$ on a scale of Bergman--type Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{D}_α$. We investigate the optimal $β$ such that the composition operator $\mathcal{C}_φ$ maps $\mathcal{D}_α$ boundedly into $\mathcal{D}_β$. We also prove a new embedding theorem for the non-Hilbertian Hardy space $\mathcal H^p$ into a Bergman space in the half-plane and …
Let $\cD$ be the Dirichlet space, namely the space of holomorphic functions on the unit disk whose derivative is square-integrable. We establish a new sufficient condition for a function $f\in\cD$ to be {\em cyclic}, i.e. for $\{pf: p\text{a polynomial}\}$ to be dense in $\cD$. This allows us to prove a special case of the conjecture of Brown and Shields that a function is cyclic in $\cD$ iff it is outer and its zero set (defined appropriately) is of capacity zero.
A range of Hardy-like spaces of ordinary Dirichlet series, called the Dirichlet-Hardy spaces $\Hp^p$, $p \geq 1$, have been the focus of increasing interest among researchers following a paper of Hedenmalm, Lindqvist and Seip in Duke Math. J 86 (1997), 1-37. The Dirichlet series in these spaces converge on a certain half-plane, where one may also define the classical Hardy spaces $H^p$. In this paper, we compare the boundary behaviour of elements in $\Hp^p$ and $H^p$. Moreover, Carleson measures of the spaces $\Hp^p$ are studied. Our main result shows that for certain cases the following state…
