We study possibilities to realize a nonvanishing finite Wilson line (WL) scalar mass in flux compactification. Generalizing loop integrals in the quantum correction to WL mass at one-loop, we derive the conditions for the loop integrals and mode sums in one-loop corrections to WL scalar mass to be finite. We further guess and classify the four-point and three-point interaction terms satisfying these conditions. As an illustration, the nonvanishing finite WL scalar mass is explicitly shown in a six dimensional scalar QED by diagrammatic computation and effective potential analysis. This is the first example of finite WL scalar mass in flux compactification.
In the context of flux compactifications, metastable vacua with a small positive cosmological constant are obtained by combining a sector where supersymmetry is broken dynamically with the sector responsible for moduli stabilization, which is known as the F-uplifting. We analyze this procedure in a model-independent way and study phenomenological properties of the resulting vacua.
We discuss supersymmetric compactifications of heterotic strings in the presence of H-flux and general condensates using the formalism of G-structures and intrinsic torsion. We revisit the examples based on nearly-Kaehler coset spaces and show that supersymmetric solutions, where the Bianchi identity is satisfied, can be obtained when both gaugino and dilatino condensates are present.
We construct six- and four-dimensional toroidal compactifications of the Type I string with magnetic flux on the D-branes. The open strings in this background probe a noncommutative internal geometry. Phenomenologically appealing features such as chiral fermions and supersymmetry breaking in the gauge sector are naturally realized by these vacua. We investigate the spectra of such noncommutative string compactifications and in a bottom-up approach discuss the possibility to obtain the standard or some GUT like model.
We construct the first D = 4 Minkowski string theory vacua of flux compactification which are (i) chiral, (ii) free of NSNS and RR tadpoles, and (iii) N = 1 or N = 0 supersymmetric. In the latter case SUSY is softly broken by the fluxes, with soft terms being generated in the gauge and chiral sectors of the theory. In addition, the low energy spectrum of the theory is MSSM-like, the dilaton/complex structure moduli are stabilized and the supergravity background involves a warped metric.
We study modular symmetry anomalies in four-dimensional low-energy effective field theory, which is derived from six-dimensional supersymmetric $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory by magnetic flux compactification. The gauge symmetry $U(N)$ is broken to $U(N_a) \times U(N_b)$ by magnetic fluxes. It is found that Abelian subgroup of the modular symmetry corresponding to discrete part of $U(1)$ can be anomalous, but other elements independent of $U(1)$ in the modular symmetry are always anomaly-free.
We elucidate the structure of D terms in N=1 orientifold compactifications with fluxes. As a case study, we consider a simple orbifold of the type-IIA theory with D6-branes at angles, O6-planes and general NSNS, RR and Scherk-Schwarz geometrical fluxes. We examine in detail the emergence of D terms, in their standard supergravity form, from an appropriate limit of the D-brane action. We derive the consistency conditions on gauged symmetries and general fluxes coming from brane-localized Bianchi identities, and their relation with the Freed-Witten anomaly. We extend our results to other N=1 com…
No-scale models arise in many compactifications of string theory and supergravity, the most prominent recent example being type IIB flux compactifications. Focussing on the case where the no-scale field is a single unstabilized volume modulus (radion), we analyse the general form of supergravity loop corrections that affect the no-scale structure of the Kaehler potential. These corrections contribute to the 4d scalar potential of the radion in a way that is similar to the Casimir effect. We discuss the interplay of this loop effect with string-theoretic alpha' corrections and its possible role…
We study the effect of adding charged matter fields to both D3 and D7 branes in type IIB string theory compactification with fluxes. Generically, charged matter fields induce additional terms to the Kahler form, the superpotential and the D-terms. These terms allow for minima with positive or zero cosmological constants, even in the absence of non-perturbative effects. We show this result first by decoupling the dilaton field along the lines of the KKLT, and second by reincorporating it in the action with the Kahler moduli.
In a torus compactification with magnetic flux, the scalar field generated from the higher dimensional gauge field becomes the Nambu-Goldstone boson of the translational symmetry in extra spaces and the mass of the scalar field is not allowed. In this paper, we explicitly show that the one-loop quantum correction to the mass of the scalar field is generated at fixed points in a case of an orbifold compactification $T^2/Z_2$ with magnetic flux. This is because the scalar field is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson as a result of explicit breaking of the translational symmetry by the fixed points. T…
We study SUSY phenomenology of the KKLT (Kachru-Kallosh-Linde-Trivedi) scenario of string theory compactifications with fluxes. This setup leads to a specific pattern of soft masses and distinct phenomenological properties. In particular, it avoids the cosmological gravitino/moduli problems. Remarkably, the model allows for the correct abundance of SUSY dark matter consistently with all experimental constraints including the bound on the Higgs mass, b-->s gamma, etc. This occurs for both small and large tan beta, and requires the SUSY spectrum above 1 TeV.
We further study the cancellation of the one-loop corrections to the scalar mass in a six dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with higher dimensional operators, which is compactified on a torus with magnetic flux. Higher dimensional operators also contribute to the corrections to the scalar mass nontrivially. We explicitly show by the diagrammatic calculations that the corrections are exactly cancelled even with the leading terms of the higher dimensional operators.
We calculate one-loop corrections to the mass for the zero mode of scalar field in a six-dimensional Yang-Mills theory compactified on a torus with magnetic flux. It is shown that these corrections are exactly cancelled thanks to a shift symmetry under the translation in extra spaces. This result is expected from the fact that the zero mode of scalar field is a Nambu-Goldstone boson of the translational invariance in extra spaces.
We discuss the gauge symmetry breaking of six dimensional theories in flux compactification with a magnetic flux background and a constant vacuum expectation value (VEV) for the scalar fields, which are zero modes of extra spatial components of the gauge field. Although the effective potential for the scalar fields are known not to be generated classically and radiatively in a magnetic flux background only, the one-loop effective potential is shown to be generated by the effects of the non-zero constant VEV. As illustrations, we calculate the one-loop effective potential in SU(2) and SU(3) Yan…
Flux compactification of string theory generates an ensemble with a large number of vacua called the landscape. By using the statistics of various properties of low-energy effective theories in the string landscape, one can therefore hope to provide a scientific foundation to the notion of naturalness. This article discusses how to answer such questions of practical interest by using flux compactification of F-theory. It is found that the distribution is approximately in a factorized form given by the distribution of the choice of 7-brane gauge group, that of the number of generations $N_{\rm …
We extend the KKLT approach to moduli stabilization by including the dilaton and the complex structure moduli into the effective supergravity theory. Decoupling of the dilaton is neither always possible nor necessary for the existence of stable minima with zero (or positive) cosmological constant. The pattern of supersymmetry breaking can be much richer than in the decoupling scenario of KKLT.
We study the cosmological evolution of the volume moduli in a class of recently proposed Inflationary Universe models arising out of Type IIB string theory, where a number of the moduli fields have been stabilised through flux compactifications. Developing an approach initially introduced in [3] we show, in agreement with [4], how the presence of extra sources of matter act so as to provide additional friction, slowing the modulus field as it evolves down its potential, thereby vastly increasing the region of parameter space which leads to the eventual stabilisation of these fields. Extending …
We study a scalar zero mode originated from extradimensional components of a gauge field in a six-dimensional theory compactified on a magnetized torus. We confirm it is a Nambu-Goldstone boson of the translational symmetry on the torus which is breaking spontaneously due to magnetic flux. We also show explicitly it is massless up to the two-loop level. Moreover, we discuss full order contributions by considering the effective potential.
We study the U(1)_R-mediated supersymmetry breaking in a flux compactification of 6D chiral gauged supergravity with codimension-two branes. We consider a concrete model with manifest U(1)_R invariance for moduli stabilization and visible sector in the context of 4D effective supergravity with gauged U(1)_R and determine soft scalar masses in the visible sector mainly by a nonzero U(1)_R D-term. We obtain a low energy superparticle spectrum and discuss on the implications of the obtained non-universal scalar soft masses on the SUSY phenomenology such as dark matter relic abundances.
We study a direct flux breaking scenario in $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory on general Calabi-Yau threefolds. The direct flux breaking, corresponding to hypercharge flux breaking in the F-theory context, allows us to derive the Standard Model in general Calabi-Yau compactifications. We present a general formula leading to the three generations of quarks and leptons and no chiral exotics in a background-independent way. As a concrete example, we show the three-generation model on a complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefold.
We provide a qualitative review of flux compactifications of string theory, focusing on broad physical implications and statistical methods of analysis.
Soft supersymmetry breaking terms were recently derived for type IIB string flux compactifications with all moduli stabilised. Depending on the choice of the discrete input parameters of the compactification such as fluxes and ranks of hidden gauge groups, the string scale was found to have any value between the TeV and GUT scales. We study the phenomenological implications of these compactifications at low energy. Three realistic scenarios can be identified depending on whether the Standard Model lies on D3 or D7 branes and on the value of the string scale. For the MSSM on D7 branes and the s…
In certain class of flux compactification, moduli mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking preserves flavor and CP at leading order in the perturbative expansion controlled by the vacuum expectation value of the messenger modulus. Nevertheless there still might be dangerous flavor or CP violation induced by higher order Kähler potential. We examine the constraints on such SUSY breaking scheme imposed by low energy flavor and/or CP violating observables. It is found that all phenomenological constraints can be satisfied even for generic form of higher order Kähler potential and sparticle spectra …
A multiplicity of quark-lepton families can naturally arise as zero-modes in flux compactifications. The flavour structure of quark and lepton mass matrices is then determined by the wave function profiles of the zero-modes. We consider a supersymmetric $SO(10)\times U(1)$ model in six dimensions compactified on the orbifold $T^2/{\mathbb Z_2}$ with Abelian magnetic flux. A bulk $\mathbf{16}$-plet charged under the $U(1)$ provides the quark-lepton generations whereas two uncharged $\mathbf{10}$-plets yield two Higgs doublets. Bulk anomaly cancellation requires the presence of additional $\math…
Compactifications of the heterotic string with NS flux normally require non Calabi-Yau internal spaces which are complex but no longer Kähler. We point out that this conclusion rests on the assumption of a maximally symmetric four-dimensional space-time and can be avoided if this assumption is relaxed. Specifically, it is shown that an internal Calabi-Yau manifold is consistent with the presence of NS flux provided four-dimensional space-time is taken to be a domain wall. These Calabi-Yau domain wall solutions can still be associated with a covariant four-dimensional N=1 supergravity. In this …
We examine the structure of soft supersymmetry breaking terms in KKLT models of flux compactification with low energy supersymmetry. Moduli are stabilized by fluxes and nonperturbative dynamics while a de Sitter vacuum is obtained by adding supersymmetry breaking anti-branes. We discuss the characteristic pattern of mass scales in such a set-up as well as some features of 4D N=1 supergravity breakdown by anti-branes. Anomaly mediation is found to always give an important contribution and one can easily arrange for flavor-independent soft terms. In its most attractive realization, the modulus m…
These notes present a pedagogical review of nongeometric flux compactifications. We begin by reviewing well-known geometric flux compactifications in Type II string theory, and argue that one must include nongeometric "fluxes" in order to have a superpotential which is invariant under T-duality. Additionally, we discuss some elementary aspects of the worldsheet description of nongeometric backgrounds. This review is based on lectures given at the 2007 RTN Winter School at CERN.
Extra-dimensional components of gauge fields in higher-dimensional gauge theories will play a role of the Higgs field and become tachyonic after Kaluza-Klein compactifications on internal spaces with (topologically nontrivial) gauge field backgrounds. Its condensation is then expected to break gauge symmetries spontaneously. But, contrary to the expectation, some models exhibit restoration of gauge symmetries. In this paper, by considering all the massive Kaluza-Klein excitations of gauge fields, we explicitly show that some of them indeed become massless at the minimum of the Higgs potential …
We review recent work in which compactifications of string and M theory are constructed in which all scalar fields (moduli) are massive, and supersymmetry is broken with a small positive cosmological constant, features needed to reproduce real world physics. We explain how this work implies that there is a ``landscape'' of string/M theory vacua, perhaps containing many candidates for describing real world physics, and present the arguments for and against this idea. We discuss statistical surveys of the landscape, and the prospects for testable consequences of this picture, such as observable …
We study proton decay in a six-dimensional orbifold GUT model with gauge group $SO(10)\times U(1)_A$. Magnetic $U(1)_A$ flux in the compact dimensions determines the multiplicity of quark-lepton generations, and it also breaks supersymmetry by giving universal GUT scale masses to scalar quarks and leptons. The model can successfully account for quark and lepton masses and mixings. Our analysis of proton decay leads to the conclusion that the proton lifetime must be close to the current experimental lower bound. Moreover, we find that the branching ratios for the decay channels $p \rightarrow e…
We study how to use smooth, compact toric varieties for supersymmetric $AdS_4$ flux compactifications using tools of SU(3) structures, similar to $CP3$ solution. A non-vanishing globally well defined complex 3-form plays a key role in such constructions. Necessary topological conditions associated with it will be understood to put constraints on large class of these manifolds for supersymmetric flux compactification. Local analysis of SU(3)-structure is carried out, which might help to explore more flux vacua.
Thermal corrections have an important effect on moduli stabilization leading to the existence of a maximal temperature, beyond which the compact dimensions decompactify. In this note, we discuss generality of our earlier analysis and apply it to the case of flux compactifications. The maximal temperature is again found to be controlled by the supersymmetry breaking scale, T_{crit} \sim \sqrt{m_{3/2} M_P}.
We perform a detailed analysis of the phenomenological properties of hidden Abelian gauge bosons with a kinetic mixing with the ordinary photon within type IIB flux compactifications. We study the interplay between moduli stabilisation and the Green-Schwarz mechanism that gives mass to the hidden photon paying particular attention to the role of D-terms. We present two generic classes of explicit Calabi-Yau examples with an isotropic and an anisotropic shape of the extra dimensions showing how the last case turns out to be very promising to make contact with current experiments. In fact, aniso…
Based on the T-dual constructions of supersymmetric intersecting D6-models on Z_2 x Z_2 orientifolds, whose electroweak sector is parallel with the orientifold planes with Sp(2f)_L x Sp(2f)_R gauge symmetry (hep-th/0407178), we derive and classify Standard Model-like vacua with RR and NSNS fluxes, which stabilize toroidal complex structure moduli and the dilaton. We find consistent four-family (f=4) and two-family (f=2) models with one- and two-units of the quantized flux, respectively. Such models typically possess additional gauge group factors with negative beta functions and may lead, via …
We present a pedagogical overview of flux compactifications in string theory, from the basic ideas to the most recent developments. We concentrate on closed string fluxes in type II theories. We start by reviewing the supersymmetric flux configurations with maximally symmetric four-dimensional spaces. We then discuss the no-go theorems (and their evasion) for compactifications with fluxes. We analyze the resulting four-dimensional effective theories, as well as some of its perturbative and non-perturbative corrections, focusing on moduli stabilization. Finally, we briefly review statistical st…
We investigate a simple class of type II string compactifications which incorporate nongeometric "fluxes" in addition to "geometric flux" and the usual H-field and R-R fluxes. These compactifications are nongeometric analogues of the twisted torus. We develop T-duality rules for NS-NS geometric and nongeometric fluxes, which we use to construct a superpotential for the dimensionally reduced four-dimensional theory. The resulting structure is invariant under T-duality, so that the distribution of vacua in the IIA and IIB theories is identical when nongeometric fluxes are included. This gives a …
We consider 4d string compactifications in the presence of fluxes, and classify particles, strings and domain walls arising from wrapped branes which have charges conserved modulo an integer p, and whose annihilation is catalized by fluxes, through the Freed-Witten anomaly or its dual versions. The Z_p-valued strings and particles are associated to Z_p discrete gauge symmetries, which we show are realized as discrete subgroups of 4d U(1) symmetries broken by their Chern-Simons couplings to the background fluxes. We also describe examples where the discrete gauge symmetry group is actually non-…
We study the conditions an arbitrary flux configuration must fulfill in order to construct a 4d space-time of the type $AdS_2\times S^2$ from a type IIB supergravity flux compactification in which NS-NS fluxes are included. We present a solution consisting on a compactification in the presence of 3-form NS-NS and RR fluxes. The internal manifold is a SU(3) structure six-dimensional manifold, with null curvature and with torsion. By preserving two supersymmetries in the four-dimensional low energy theory, we find a way to obtain the $AdS_2\times S^2$ geometry as a near-horizon solution by compa…
Flux compactifications of $M$ theory on certain $G_2$-manifolds have vacua in which all moduli are determined. These vacua have discrete parameters - the flux quanta. Small changes in these quanta produce small changes in the moduli and these can lead to large changes in the Yukawa couplings between Higgses, quarks and leptons. We argue that a large number of vacua exist with a wide variety of Yukawa hierarchies.
In flux compactifications of type IIB string theory with D3 and seven-branes, the negative induced D3 charge localized on seven-branes leads to an apparently pathological profile of the metric sufficiently close to the source. With the volume modulus stabilized in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum this pathological region takes over a significant part of the entire compactification, threatening to spoil the KKLT effective field theory. In this paper we employ the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory to argue that wrapped seven-branes can be thought of as bound states of more m…
We compute the one-loop threshold corrections to the gauge and gravitational couplings for a large class of N=2 non-Kähler heterotic compactifications with three-form flux, consisting in principal two-torus bundles over K3 surfaces. We obtain the results as sums of BPS-states contributions, depending on the topological data of the bundle. We analyse also the worldsheet non-perturbative corrections coming from instantons wrapping the torus fiber, that are mapped under S-duality to D-instanton corrections in type I flux compactifications.
We investigate whether there are attractor equations for N=1 flux vacua in generalized compactifications. We fill a gap in the existing literature by verifying analytically that the recently proposed susy attractors, for type IIB CY(3) orientifold compactifications with flux, do give supersymmetric minima of the relevant scalar potential. Furthermore, our considerations clarify various confusions about existing proposals for generalization of the flux vacua attractors to non-Kähler compactifications. We explore different possibilities for generalization and find attractor equations for N=1 Min…
We investigate whether a class of models describing F-theory compactifications admits a specific type of flux vacua with an exponentially small vacuum expectation value of the superpotential, by generalizing a method recently developed in Type IIB flux compactifications. First we clarify that a restricted choice of $G_4$-flux components reduces a general flux superpotential into a simple form, which promotes the existence of supersymmetric vacua with one flat direction at the perturbative level. Then we utilize the techniques of mirror symmetry to determine one-instanton corrections to the pot…
We investigate the construction of non-supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of heterotic string theory with intrinsic torsion and background fluxes. We do this by using the technique of domain-wall supersymmetry breaking (DWSB) that was developed in the context of type II compactifications. By means of a scalar potential we derive conditions on the compactification manifold that must hold in order to satisfy the equations of motion up to order alpha'.
We identify instantons representing vacuum decay in a 6-dimensional toy model for string theory flux compactifications, with the two extra dimensions compactified on a sphere. We evaluate the instanton action for tunneling between different flux vacua, as well as for the decompactification decay channel. The bubbles resulting from flux tunneling have an unusual structure. They are bounded by two-dimensional branes, which are localized in the extra dimensions. This has important implications for bubble collisions.
Free massless scalars have a shift symmetry. This is usually broken by gauge and Yukawa interactions, such that quantum corrections induce a quadratically divergent mass term. In the Standard Model this leads to the hierarchy problem of the electroweak theory, the question why the Higgs mass is so much smaller than the Planck mass. We present an example where a large scalar mass term is avoided by coupling the scalar to an infinite tower of massive states which are obtained from a six-dimensional theory compactified on a torus with magnetic flux. The series of divergent quantum corrections add…
In flux compactifications of M-theory a superpotential is generated whose explicit form depends on the structure group of the 7-dimensional internal manifold. In this note, we discuss superpotentials for the structure groups: G_2, SU(3) or SU(2). For the G_2 case all internal fluxes have to vanish. For SU(3) structures, the non-zero flux components entering the superpotential describe an effective 1-dimensional model and a Chern-Simons model if there are SU(2) structures.
We consider Minkowski compactifications of M-theory on generic seven-dimensional manifolds. After analyzing the conditions on the four-form flux, we establish a set of relations between the components of the intrinsic torsion of the internal manifold and the components of the four-form flux needed for preserving supersymmetry. The existence of two nowhere vanishing vectors on any seven-manifold with G_2 structure plays a crucial role in our analysis, leading to the possibility of four-dimensional compactifications with N=1 and N=2 supersymmetry.
We consider compactifications of M-theory and type IIA string theory to four dimensions. For Minkowski space-time, a supergravity no-go theorem forbids flux supported in the internal space. We show how to evade this no-go theorem by exhibiting new sources of brane charge: in string theory, the basic physical phenomenon is the generation of new brane charges from D-branes in transverse fluxes. In M-theory, there is a new source of M5-brane charge from novel higher derivative couplings that involve fluxes as well as curvatures. We present some explicit orientifold examples with both N=1 and N=2 …
We find a simple exact solution of 6-dimensional braneworld which captures some essential features of warped flux compactification, including a warped geometry, compactification, a magnetic flux, and one or two 3-brane(s). In this setup we analyze how the Hubble expansion rate on each brane changes when the brane tension changes. It is shown that effective Newton's constant resulting from this analysis agrees with that inferred by simply integrating extra dimensions out. Based on the result, a general formula for effective Newton's constant is conjectured and its application to cosmology with …
The introduction of (non-)geometric fluxes allows for N=1 moduli stabilisation in a De Sitter vacuum. The aim of this letter is to assess to what extent this is true in N=4 compactifications. First we identify the correct gauge algebra in terms of gauge and (non-)geometric fluxes. We then show that this algebra does not lead to any of the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions. In particular, the gaugings that one obtains from flux compactifications involve non-semi-simple algebras, while the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions consist of direct products of (semi-)simple algebras.
We discuss four dimensional effective actions of string theory flux compactifications. These effective actions describe four dimensional gravity coupled to overall Kahler modulus of the compactification manifold. We demonstrate the agreement between ten dimensional equations of motion of supergravity with localized branes, and equations of motion derived from the effective action. The agreement is lost however if one evaluates the full effective action on the equations of motion for a subset of the supergravity modes, provided these modes depend on-shell on the Kahler modulus.
The low-energy effective theories describing string compactifications in the presence of fluxes are so-called gauged supergravities: deformations of the standard abelian supergravity theories. The deformation parameters can be identified with the various possible (geometric and non-geometric) flux components. In these lecture notes we review the construction of gauged supergravities in a manifestly duality covariant way and illustrate the construction in several examples.
Using a recently proposed group-theoretical approach, we explore novel gaugings of maximal supergravity in four dimensions with gauge group embeddings that can be generated by fluxes of IIB string theory. The corresponding potentials are positive without stationary points. Some allow domain wall solutions which can be elevated to ten dimensions. Appropriate truncations describe type-IIB flux compactifications on T^6 orientifolds leading to non-maximal, four-dimensional, supergravities.
We study supersymmetric compactification to four dimensions with non-zero H-flux in heterotic string theory. The background metric is generically conformally balanced and can be conformally Kahler if the primitive part of the H-flux vanishes. Analyzing the linearized variational equations, we write down necessary conditions for the existence of moduli associated with the metric. In a heterotic model that is dual to a IIB compactification on an orientifold, we find the metric moduli in a fixed H-flux background via duality and check that they satisfy the required conditions. We also discuss exp…
We construct a set of chirality inducing G_4-fluxes in global F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau four-folds. Special emphasis is put on models with gauge group SU(5) x U(1)_X relevant in the context of F-theory GUT model building, which are described in terms of a U(1)-restricted Tate model. In this type of constructions, the G_4-flux arises in a manner completely analogous to the U(1)_X gauge potential. We describe in detail the resolution by blow-up of the various singularities responsible for the U(1)_X factor and the standard SU(5) gauge group and match the result with techniques app…
We show the dynamical stability of a six-dimensional braneworld solution with warped flux compactification recently found by the authors. We consider linear perturbations around this background spacetime, assuming the axisymmetry in the extra dimensions. The perturbations are expanded by scalar-, vector- and tensor-type harmonics of the four-dimensional Minkoswki spacetime and we analyze each type separately. It is found that there is no unstable mode in each sector and that there are zero modes only in the tensor sector, corresponding to the four-dimensional gravitons. We also obtain the firs…
At the leading order, M-theory admits minimal supersymmetric compactifications if the internal manifold has exceptional holonomy. The inclusion of non-vanishing fluxes in M-theory and string theory compactifications induce a superpotential in the lower dimensional theory, which depends on the fluxes. In this work, we verify the conjectured form of this superpotential in the case of warped M-theory compactifications on Spin(7) holonomy manifolds. We calculate the most general causal N=1 three-dimensional, gauge invariant action coupled to matter in superspace and derive its component form using…
We consider compactifications of type I supergravity on manifolds with SU(3) structure, in the presence of RR fluxes and magnetized D9-branes, and analyze the generalized Dirac and Laplace-Beltrami operators associated to the D9-brane worldvolume fields. These compactifications are T-dual to standard type IIB toroidal orientifolds with NSNS and RR 3-form fluxes and D3/D7 branes. By using techniques of representation theory and harmonic analysis, the spectrum of open string wavefunctions can be computed for Lie groups and their quotients, as we illustrate with explicit twisted tori examples. We…
