We investigate whether there are attractor equations for N=1 flux vacua in generalized compactifications. We fill a gap in the existing literature by verifying analytically that the recently proposed susy attractors, for type IIB CY(3) orientifold compactifications with flux, do give supersymmetric minima of the relevant scalar potential. Furthermore, our considerations clarify various confusions about existing proposals for generalization of the flux vacua attractors to non-Kähler compactifications. We explore different possibilities for generalization and find attractor equations for N=1 Minkowski vacua only both for the heterotic string on SU(3) structure manifolds and for type IIA/B on SU(3)xSU(3) structure spaces.
We derive algebraic attractor equations describing supersymmetric flux vacua of type IIB string theory in terms of the doublet of the 3-form fluxes, F and H. These equations are similar to the attractor equations for moduli fixed by the charges near the horizon of the supersymmetric black holes.
We summarize and extend our work on flux vacua attractors in generalized compactifications. After reviewing the attractor equations for the heterotic string on SU(3) structure manifolds, we study attractors for N=1 vacua in type IIA/B on SU(3)xSU(3) structure spaces. In the case of vanishing RR flux, we find attractor equations that encode Minkowski vacua only (and which correct a previous normalization error). In addition to our previous considerations, here we also discuss the case of nonzero RR flux and the possibility of attractors for AdS vacua.
The recent progress in the understanding of the landscape of string theory vacua hints that the hierarchy problem might be the problem of a super-selection rule. The attractor mechanism gives a possibility to explain the choice of a vacuum. We consider a toy model of self-interacting membranes and show that for a very generic interaction there are attractor solutions.
We derive the equations for the nonsupersymmetric vacua of D3-branes in the presence of nonperturbative moduli stabilization in type IIB flux compactifications, and solve and analyze them in the case of two particular 7-brane embeddings at the bottom of the warped deformed conifold. In the limit of large volume and long throat, we obtain vacua by imposing a constraint on the 7-brane embedding. These vacua fill out continuous spaces of higher dimension than the corresponding supersymmetric vacua, and have negative effective cosmological constant. Perturbative stability of these vacua is possibl…
We study the vacuum structure of compactifications of type II string theories on orientifolds with SU(3)xSU(3) structure. We argue that generalised geometry enables us to treat these non-geometric compactifications using a supergravity analysis in a way very similar to geometric compactifications. We find supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with all the moduli stabilised at weak string coupling and all the tadpole conditions satisfied. Generically the value of the moduli fields in the vacuum is parametrically controlled and can be taken to arbitrarily large values.
We consider flux vacua attractor equations in type IIA string theory compactified on generalized geometries with orientifold projections. The four-dimensional N=1 superpotential in this compactification can be written as the sum of the Ramond-Ramond superpotential and a term described by (non)geometric flux charges. We exhibit a simple model in which supersymmetric AdS and Minkowski solutions are classified by means of discriminants of the two superpotentials. We further study various configurations without Ramond-Ramond flux charges. In this case we find supersymmetric AdS vacua both in the c…
We analyse geometric type IIA flux compactifications leading to N=4 gauged supergravities in four dimensions. The complete landscape of isotropic vacua is presented, which turns out to belong to a unique theory. The solutions admit an uplift to maximal supergravity due to the vanishing of the flux-induced tadpoles for all the supersymmetry-breaking branes. Such an uplift is sketched out and the full N=8 mass spectra are discussed. We find the interesting presence of a non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable minimum.
We examine the vacuum structure of 4D effective theories of moduli fields in spacetime compactifications with quantized background fluxes. Imposing the no-scale structure for the volume deformations, we numerically investigate the distributions of flux vacua of the effective potential in complex structure moduli and axio-dilaton directions for two explicit examples in Type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications. It turns out that distributions of non-supersymmetric flux vacua exhibit a non-increasing functional behavior of several on-shell quantities with respect to the string coupli…
This article is the author's PhD thesis. After a review of string vacua obtained through compactification (with and wothout fluxes), it presents and describes various aspects of the Landscape of string vacua. At first it gives an introduction and an overview of the statistical study of the set of four dimensional string vacua, giving the detailed study of one corner of this set (G2-holonomy compactifications of M-theory). Then it presents the ten dimensional approach to string vacua, concentrating on the ten dimensional description of the Type IIA flux vacua. Finally it gives two examples of m…
In this note we study the mass spectrum of type IIB flux compactifications. We first give a general discussion of the mass matrix for F-term vacua in four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theories and then specialize to type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications in the presence of geometric and non-geometric fluxes. F-term vacua in this setting are in general AdS$_4$ vacua for which we compute the conformal dimensions of operators dual to the scalar fields. For the mirror-dual of the DGKT construction we find that one-loop corrections to the complex-structure moduli space lead to real-value…
At the leading order, M-theory admits minimal supersymmetric compactifications if the internal manifold has exceptional holonomy. Once we take into account higher order quantum correction terms in the low energy effective action, the supergravity vacua have to be deformed away from the exceptional holonomy if we want to preserve the supersymmetry of the solution. In this paper we discuss the Spin(7) holonomy case. We derive a perturbative set of solutions which emerges from a warped compactification with non-vanishing flux for the M-theory field strength and we identify the supersymmetric vacu…
Flux compactifications of $M$ theory on certain $G_2$-manifolds have vacua in which all moduli are determined. These vacua have discrete parameters - the flux quanta. Small changes in these quanta produce small changes in the moduli and these can lead to large changes in the Yukawa couplings between Higgses, quarks and leptons. We argue that a large number of vacua exist with a wide variety of Yukawa hierarchies.
We construct a new class of metastable de Sitter vacua of flux compactifications of type IIB string theory. These solutions provide a natural extension of the `Large Volume Scenario' anti-de Sitter vacua, and can analogously be realised at parametrically large volume and weak string coupling, using standard ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity. For these new vacua, a positive vacuum energy is achieved from the inclusion of a small amount of flux-induced supersymmetry breaking in the complex structure and axio-dilaton sector, and no additional `uplift' contribution (e.g.~from anti-branes) is required. We …
We study moduli stabilization of the F-theory compactified on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfold. Our setup is based on the mirror symmetry framework including brane deformations. The complex structure moduli dependence of the resulting 4D N=1 effective theory is determined by the associated fourfold period integrals. By turning on appropriate G-fluxes, we explicitly demonstrate that all the complex structure moduli fields can be stabilized around the large complex structure point of the F-theory fourfold.
In this note we give multiple examples of the recently proposed New Attractors describing supersymmetric flux vacua and non-supersymmetric extremal black holes in IIB string theory. Examples of non-supersymmetric extremal black hole attractors arise on a hypersurface in $WP^{4}_{1,1,1,1,2}$. For flux vacua on the orientifold of the same hypersurface existence of multiple basins of attraction is established. It is explained that certain fluxes may give rise to multiple supersymmetric flux vacua in a finite region on moduli space, say at the Landau-Ginzburg point and close to conifold point. Thi…
We argue that the Maldacena-Nunez no-go theorem excluding Minkowski and de Sitter vacua in flux compactifications can be extended to exclude anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua for which the Kaluza-Klein scale is parametrically smaller than the AdS length scale. As a practical application of this observation we demonstrate that the mechanism to resolve O6 singularities in massive type IIA at the classical level is likely not to occur in AdS compactifications with scale separation. We furthermore remark that a compactification to four observable dimensions implies a large cosmological hierarchy.
D3-branes feel no force in no-scale flux compactifications of type IIB string theory, but the nonperturbative effects required to stabilize the Kahler moduli break the no-scale structure and generate a potential for D3-brane motion, confining the branes to certain loci. D3-branes away from these loci break supersymmetry spontaneously, by an F-term. We present the general conditions for supersymmetric D3-brane vacua in models with a single Kahler modulus, then explicitly calculate these vacua for D3-branes moving on the tip of the warped deformed conifold. We find both continuous moduli spaces …
A new framework is found for the compactification of supersymmetric string theory. It is shown that the massless spectra of Calabi--Yau manifolds of complex dimension $D_{crit}$ can be derived from noncritical manifolds of complex dimension $2k + D_{crit}$, $k\geq 1$. These higher dimensional manifolds are spaces whose nonzero Ricci curvature is quantized in a particular way. This class is more general than that of Calabi--Yau manifolds because it contains spaces which correspond to critical string vacua with no Kähler deformations, i.e. no antigenerations, thus providing mirrors of rigid Cala…
We search for phenomenologically viable vacua of IIB string flux compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with a single Kaehler modulus. We perform both analytic studies and numerical searches in order to find models with de Sitter vacua and TeV-scale SUSY particle phenomenology.
This letter discusses the orientifold projection of the quantum corrections to type IIA strings compactified on rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds. It is shown that N=2 membrane instanton effects give a holomorphic contribution to the superpotential, while the perturbative corrections enter into the Kahler potential. At the level of the scalar potential the corrections to the Kahler potential give rise to a positive energy contribution similar to adding anti-D3-branes in the KKLT scenario. This provides a natural mechanism to lift an AdS vacuum to a meta-stable dS vacuum.
In the context of flux compactifications, metastable vacua with a small positive cosmological constant are obtained by combining a sector where supersymmetry is broken dynamically with the sector responsible for moduli stabilization, which is known as the F-uplifting. We analyze this procedure in a model-independent way and study phenomenological properties of the resulting vacua.
We present stable de Sitter solutions of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supergravity in a geometric type IIB duality frame with the addition of non-perturbative contributions. Contrary to the standard approach, we retain the moduli dependence of both the tree level superpotential and its non-perturbative contribution. This provides the possibility for a single-step stabilisation of all moduli simultaneously in a de Sitter vacuum. Using a genetic algorithm we find explicit solutions with different features.
We show that various disconnected components of the moduli space of superstring vacua with 16 supercharges admit a rationale in terms of BPS un-orientifolds, i.e. type I toroidal compactifications with constant non-vanishing but quantized vacuum expectation values of the NS-NS antisymmetric tensor. These include various heterotic vacua with reduced rank, known as CHL strings, and their dual type II (2,2) superstrings below D=6. Type I vacua without open strings allow for an interpretation of several disconnected components with N_V=10-D. An adiabatic argument relates these unconventional type …
We examine the structure of lower-dimensional standard model vacua for two-dimensional compactifications (on a 2D torus and on a 2D sphere). In the case of the torus we find a new standard model vacuum for a large range of neutrino masses consistent with experiment. Quantum effects play a crucial role in the existence of this vacuum. For the compactification on a sphere the classical terms dominate the effective potential for large radii and a stable vacuum is achieved only by introducing a large magnetic flux. We argue that there are no two-dimensional standard model vacua for compactificatio…
We analyse the vacuum structure of isotropic Z_2 x Z_2 flux compactifications, allowing for a single set of sources. Combining algebraic geometry with supergravity techniques, we are able to classify all vacua for both type IIA and IIB backgrounds with arbitrary gauge and geometric fluxes. Surprisingly, geometric IIA compactifications lead to a unique theory with four different vacua. In this case we also perform the general analysis allowing for sources compatible with minimal supersymmetry. Moreover, some relevant examples of type IIB non-geometric compactifications are studied. The computat…
Only two kinds of compactification are known that lead to four-dimensional supersymmetric AdS vacua with moduli stabilisation and separation of scales at tree-level. The most studied ones are compactifications of massive IIA supergravity on SU(3) structures with smeared O6 planes, for which a general ten-dimensional expression for the solution in terms of the SU(3) structure was found. Less studied are compactifications of IIB supergravity with smeared O5/O7 planes. In this paper we derive a general ten-dimensional expression for the smeared O5/O7 solutions in terms of SU(2) structures. For a …
In this paper we analyze the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure. We first study the effective theories obtained from compactifications on half-flat manifolds and show that solutions which stabilise the moduli at acceptable values are hard to find. We then derive the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds. It is shown that these effective theories are consistent with four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and that the superpotential can be obtained by a Gukov-Vafa-Wit…
We construct the first D = 4 Minkowski string theory vacua of flux compactification which are (i) chiral, (ii) free of NSNS and RR tadpoles, and (iii) N = 1 or N = 0 supersymmetric. In the latter case SUSY is softly broken by the fluxes, with soft terms being generated in the gauge and chiral sectors of the theory. In addition, the low energy spectrum of the theory is MSSM-like, the dilaton/complex structure moduli are stabilized and the supergravity background involves a warped metric.
We explore the possibility of obtaining de Sitter vacua in strongly coupled heterotic models by adding various corrections to the supergravity potential energy. We show that, in a generic compactification scenario, Fayet-Iliopoulos terms can generate a de Sitter vacuum. The cosmological constant in this vacuum can be fine tuned to be consistent with observation. We also study moduli potentials in non-supersymmetric compactifications of $E_8 \times E_8$ theory with anti five-branes and $E_8 \times \bar E_8$ theory. We argue that they can be used to create a de Sitter vacuum only if some of the …
We consider six-dimensional supergravity with Abelian bulk flux compactified on an orbifold. The effective low-energy action can be expressed in terms of N=1 chiral moduli superfields with a gauged shift symmetry. The D-term potential contains two Fayet-Iliopoulos terms which are induced by the flux and by the Green-Schwarz term canceling the gauge anomalies, respectively. The Green-Schwarz term also leads to a correction of the gauge kinetic function which turns out to be crucial for the existence of Minkowski and de Sitter vacua. Moduli stabilization is achieved by the interplay of the D-ter…
These lectures provide a pedagogical, introductory review of the so-called Attractor Mechanism (AM) at work in two different 4-dimensional frameworks: extremal black holes in N=2 supergravity and N=1 flux compactifications. In the first case, AM determines the stabilization of scalars at the black hole event horizon purely in terms of the electric and magnetic charges, whereas in the second context the AM is responsible for the stabilization of the universal axion-dilaton and of the (complex structure) moduli purely in terms of the RR and NSNS fluxes. Two equivalent approaches to AM, namely th…
We study N=1 Minkowski vacua in compactifications of type II string theory in the language of exceptional generalized geometry (EGG). We find the differential equations governing the EGG analogues of the pure spinors of generalized complex geometry, namely the structures which parameterize the vector and hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the effective four-dimensional N=2 supergravity obtained after compactification. In order to do so, we identify a twisted differential operator that contains NS and RR fluxes and transforms covariantly under the U-duality group, E7(7). We show that the condition…
We discuss the properties of massive type IIA flux compactifications. In particular, we investigate in which case one can obtain dS vacua at large volume and small coupling. We support a general discussion of scaling symmetries with the analysis of a concrete example. We find that the large volume and weak coupling limit requires a large number of O6-planes. Since these are bound for any given compactification space one cannot get arbitrarily good control over $α'$ and string loop corrections.
We revisit the stability of the complex structure moduli in the large volume regime of type-IIB flux compactifications. We argue that when the volume is not exponentially large, such as in Kähler uplifted dS vacua, the quantum corrections to the tree-level mass spectrum can induce tachyonic instabilities in this sector. We discuss a Random Matrix Theory model for the classical spectrum of the complex structure fields, and derive a new stability bound involving the compactification volume and the (very large) number of moduli. We also present a new class of vacua for this sector where the mass …
We study certain compactifications of the type I string on K3. The three topologically distinct choices of gauge bundle for the type I theory are shown to be equivalent to type IIB orientifolds with different choices of background anti-symmetric tensor field flux. Using a mirror transformation, we relate these models to orientifolds with fixed seven planes, and without any antisymmetric tensor field flux. This map allows us to relate these type I vacua to particular six-dimensional F theory and heterotic string compactifications.
We revisit flux compactifications of type IIB string theory on `spaces' dual to rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds. This rather unexplored part of the string landscapes harbors many interesting four-dimensional solutions, namely supersymmetric $\mathcal{N}=1$ Minkowski vacua without flat direction and infinite families of AdS vacua, some potentially with unrestricted rank for the gauge group. We also comment on the existence of metastable dS solutions in this setup. We discuss how these solutions fit into the web of swampland conjectures.
We analyse type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds with backgroud fluxes, taking into account the effect of perturbative $α'$-corrections. In particular, we consider the $α'$-corrections that modify the metrics in the Kähler sector of the compactification. As it has been argued in the literature, including such $α'$-corrections allows to construct the mirror duals of type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications, in which the effect of flux backreaction is under control. We compute the $α'$-corrected scalar potential generated by the presence of RR and NS fluxes, and reformulate it as a bilinear of the …
We address the construction of non-supersymmetric vacua in heterotic compactifications with intrinsic torsion and background fluxes. In particular, we implement the approach of domain-wall supersymmetry breaking (DWSB) previously developed in the context of type II flux compactifications. This approach is based on considering backgrounds where probe NS5-branes wrapping internal three-cycles and showing up as four-dimensional domain-walls do not develop a BPS bound, while all the other BPS bounds characterizing the N=1 supersymmetric compactifications are preserved at tree-level. Via a scalar p…
We study a direct flux breaking scenario in $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory on general Calabi-Yau threefolds. The direct flux breaking, corresponding to hypercharge flux breaking in the F-theory context, allows us to derive the Standard Model in general Calabi-Yau compactifications. We present a general formula leading to the three generations of quarks and leptons and no chiral exotics in a background-independent way. As a concrete example, we show the three-generation model on a complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefold.
This note discusses the connection between generalised geometry and flux compactifications of string theory. Firstly, we explain in a pedestrian manner how the supersymmetry constraints of type II ${\mathcal{N}}=1$ flux compactifications can be restated as integrability constraints on certain generalised complex structures. This reformulation uses generalised complex geometry, a mathematical framework that geometrizes the B-field. Secondly, we discuss how exceptional generalised geometry may provide a similar geometrization of the RR fields. Thirdly, we examine the connection between generalis…
We construct worldsheet descriptions of heterotic flux vacua as the IR limits of N=2 gauge theories. Spacetime torsion is incorporated via a 2d Green-Schwarz mechanism in which a doublet of axions cancels a one-loop gauge anomaly. Manifest (0,2) supersymmetry and the compactness of the gauge theory instanton moduli space suggest that these models, which include Fu-Yau models, are stable against worldsheet instanton effects, implying that they, like Calabi-Yaus, may be smoothly extended to solutions of the exact beta functions. Since Fu-Yau compactifications are dual to KST-type flux compactifi…
We discuss a duality of (0,2) heterotic string vacua which implies that certain pairs of (0,2) Calabi-Yau compactifications on topologically distinct target manifolds yield identical string theories. Some complex structure moduli in one model are interpreted in the dual model as deforming the holomorphic structure of the vacuum gauge bundle (and vice versa). A better understanding of singularity resolution for (0,2) models may reveal that this duality of compactifications on singular spaces is part of a larger story, involving smooth topology-changing processes which interpolate between the (0…
We discuss stability of non-supersymmetric compactification of M-theory and string theory of the form AdS * X, and their dual non-supersymmetric interacting conformal field theories. We argue some of the difficulties in controlling 1/N-corrections disappear in the cases that the large-N dual conformal field theory has no invariant marginal operators (and in some cases with no exactly marginal operators only). We provide several examples of such compactifications of M-theory down to AdS4.
We study non-supersymmetric extremal black hole excitations of 4d N=2 supersymmetric string vacua arising from compactification on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The values of the (vector multiplet) moduli at the black hole horizon are governed by the attractor mechanism. This raises natural questions, such as "what is the distribution of attractor points on moduli space?" and "how many attractor black holes are there with horizon area up to a certain size?" We employ tools developed by Denef and Douglas to answer these questions.
We describe type IIB compactifications with varying coupling constant in d=6,7,8,9 dimensions, where part of the ten-dimensional SL(2,Z) symmetry is broken by a background with Gamma_0(n) or Gamma(n) monodromy for n=2,3,4. This extends the known class of F-theory vacua to theories which are dual to heterotic compactifications with reduced rank. On compactifying on a further torus, we obtain a description of the heterotic moduli space of G bundles over elliptically fibered manifolds without vector structure in terms of complex geometries.
We investigate whether a class of models describing F-theory compactifications admits a specific type of flux vacua with an exponentially small vacuum expectation value of the superpotential, by generalizing a method recently developed in Type IIB flux compactifications. First we clarify that a restricted choice of $G_4$-flux components reduces a general flux superpotential into a simple form, which promotes the existence of supersymmetric vacua with one flat direction at the perturbative level. Then we utilize the techniques of mirror symmetry to determine one-instanton corrections to the pot…
We continue the investigation into non-maximally symmetric compactifications of the heterotic string. In particular, we consider compactifications where the internal space is allowed to depend on two or more external directions. For preservation of supersymmetry, this implies that the internal space must in general be that of a $Spin(7)$ manifold, which leads to a $1/4$-BPS four-dimensional supersymmetric perturbative vacuum breaking all but one supercharge. We find that these solutions allow for internal geometries previously excluded by the domain-wall-type solutions, and hence the resulting…
Stable vacua obtained from isotropic tori compactification might not be fully stable provided the existence of runaway directions in the Kaehler directions of anisotropy. By implementing a genetic algorithm we report the existence of explicit flux configurations leading to stable de Sitter and Anti- de Sitter vacua, consisting on Type IIB compactifications on a 6-dimensional anisotropic torus threaded with standard and S-dual invariant non-geometric fluxes in the presence of orientifold 3-planes. In all dS vacua the masses of the complex structure moduli are heavier than the Hubble scale sugge…
We observe that the new attractor mechanism describing IIB flux vacua for Calabi-Yau compactifications has a possible extension to the landscape of non-Kaehler vacua that emerge in heterotic compactifications with fluxes. We focus on the effective theories coming from compactifications on generalized half-flat manifolds, showing that the Minkowski "attractor points'' for 3-form fluxes are special-hermitian manifolds.
We derive new algebraic attractor equations describing supersymmetric flux vacua of type IIB string theory. The first term in these equations, proportional to the gravitino mass (the central charge), is similar to the attractor equations for moduli fixed by the charges near the horizon of the supersymmetric black holes. The second term does not have a counterpart in the theory of black hole attractors. It is proportional to a mass matrix mixing axino-dilatino with complex structure modulino. This allows stabilization of moduli for vanishing central charge, which was not possible for BPS black …
We discuss a novel strategy to construct 4D N=0 stable flux vacua of type II string theory, based on the existence of BPS bounds for probe D-branes in some of these backgrounds. In particular, we consider compactifications where D-branes filling the 4D space-time obey the same BPS bound as they would in an N=1 compactification, while other D-branes, like those appearing as domain walls from the 4D perspective, can no longer be BPS. We construct a subfamily of such backgrounds giving rise to 4D N=0 Minkowski no-scale vacua, generalizing the well-known case of type IIB on a warped Calabi-Yau. We…
We study compactifications of Type IIB string theory on a K3 \times T^2/Z_2 orientifold in the presence of RR and NS flux. We find the most general supersymmetry preserving, Poincare invariant, vacua in this model. All the complex structure moduli and some of the Kahler moduli are stabilised in these vacua. We obtain in an explicit fashion the restrictions imposed by supersymmetry on the flux, and the values of the fixed moduli. Some T-duals and Heterotic duals are also discussed, these are non-Calabi-Yau spaces. A superpotential is constructed describing these duals.
We consider attractor varieties arising in the construction of dyonic black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of IIB string theory. We show that the attractor varieties are constructed from products of elliptic curves with complex multiplication for $\mathcal{N}=4,8$ compactifications. The heterotic dual theories are related to rational conformal field theories. The emergence of curves with complex multiplication suggests many interesting connections between arithmetic and string theory. This paper is a brief overview of a longer companion paper entitled ``Arithmetic and Attractors,'' hep-…
We study dimensional reductions of M-theory/type II strings down to 6D in the presence of fluxes and spacetime filling branes and orientifold planes of different types. We classify all inequivalent orientifold projections giving rise to $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supergravities in 6D and work out the embedding tensor/fluxes dictionary for each of those. Finally we analyze the set of vacua for the different classes of reductions and find an abundance of "no-scale" type Minkowski vacua, as well as a few novel examples of (A)dS extrema.
We give results for the distribution and number of flux vacua of various types, supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric, in IIb string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau manifolds. We compare this with related problems such as counting attractor points.
We discuss a mechanism through which the multi-vacua theories, such as String Theory, could solve the Hierarchy Problem, without any UV-regulating physics at low energies. Because of symmetry the number density of vacua with a certain hierarchically-small Higgs mass diverges, and is an attractor on the vacuum landscape. The hierarchy problem is solved in two steps. It is first promoted into a problem of the super-selection rule among the infinite number of vacua (analogous to theta-vacua in QCD), that are finely scanned by the Higgs mass. This rule is lifted by heavy branes, which effectively c…
