We have selected Abell 3266 to search for ram-pressure induced star formation as a global property of a merging cluster. Abell 3266 (z = 0.0594) is a high mass cluster that features a high velocity dispersion, an infalling subcluster near to the line of sight, and a strong shock front. These phenomena should all contribute to making Abell 3266 an optimum cluster to see the global effects of RPS induced star formation. Using archival X-ray observations and published optical data, we cross-correlate optical spectral properties ([OII, H$β$]), indicative of starburst and post starburst, respectively with ram-pressure, $ρ$v$^{2}$, calculated from the X-ray and optical data. We find that post-starburst galaxies, classified as E+A, occur at a higher frequency in this merging cluster than in the Coma cluster and at a comparable rate to intermediate redshift clusters. This is consistent with increased star formation due to the merger. However, both starburst and post-starburst galaxies are equally likely to be in a low or high ram pressure environment. From this result we infer that the duration of the starburst phase must be very brief so that: (1) at any time only a small fraction of the galaxies in a high ram pressure environment show this effect, and (2) most post-starburst galaxies are in an environment of low ram pressure due too their continued orbital motion in the cluster.
In this paper we present new AAOmega spectroscopy of 254 galaxies within a 30' radius around Abell 3888. We combine these data with the existing redshifts measured in a one degree radius around the cluster and performed a substructure analysis. We confirm 71 member galaxies within the core of A3888 and determine a new average redshift and velocity dispersion for the cluster of 0.1535 +\- 0.0009 and 1181 +\- 197 km/s, respectively. The cluster is elongated along an East-West axis and we find the core is bimodal along this axis with two sub-groups of 26 and 41 members detected. Our results sugge…
We report polarimetry results of a merging cluster of galaxies Abell 2256 with Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). We performed new observations with JVLA at S-band (2051-3947 MHz) and X-band (8051-9947 MHz) in the C array configuration, and detected significant polarized emissions from the radio relic, Source A, and Source B in this cluster. We calculated the total magnetic field strengths toward the radio relic using revised equipartition formula, which is 1.8-5.0 microG. With dispersions of Faraday rotation measure, magnetic-field strengths toward Sources A and B are estimated to be 0.6…
Abell 2146 consists of two galaxy clusters that have recently collided close to the plane of the sky, and it is unique in showing two large shocks on $\textit{Chandra X-ray Observatory}$ images. With an early stage merger, shortly after first core passage, one would expect the cluster galaxies and the dark matter to be leading the X-ray emitting plasma. In this regard, the cluster Abell 2146-A is very unusual in that the X-ray cool core appears to lead, rather than lag, the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) in their trajectories. Here we present a strong lensing analysis of multiple image systems…
We present new low-frequency ($ν= 88$-216 MHz) observations of the complex merging galaxy cluster Abell 3266. These new observations are taken with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in its Phase II 'extended', long-baseline configuration, offering the highest-resolution low-frequency view of the cluster to date. We report on the detection of four steep spectrum ($α\lesssim -1$ for $S_ν\propto ν^α$) extended radio sources within the cluster. We confirm the detection of a $\sim 570$ kpc radio relic to the south of the cluster, and a possible bridge of emission connecting the relic to the clust…
The galaxy cluster Abell~3376 is a nearby (z=0.046) dissociative merging cluster surrounded by two prominent radio relics and showing an X-ray comet-like morphology. The merger system is comprised of the subclusters A3376W & A3376E. Based on new deep multi-wavelength large-field images and published redshifts, we bring new insights about the history of this merger. Despite the difficulty of applying the weak lensing technique at such low redshift, we successfully recovered the mass distribution in the cluster field. Moreover, with the application of a two-body model, we have addressed the dyna…
We present the study of the internal dynamics of the intriguing galaxy cluster Abell 1703, a system hosting a probable giant radio halo whose dynamical status is still controversial. Our analysis is based on unpublished spectroscopic data acquired at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and data publicly available in the literature. We also use photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We select 147 cluster members and compute the cluster redshift $\left<z\right>\sim 0.277$ and the global line-of-sight velocity dispersion $σ_{\rm v}\sim 1300$ km/s. We infer that Abell 1703 is a m…
Galaxy clusters with signs for a recent merger show in many cases extended diffuse radio features. This emission originates from relativistic electrons which suffer synchrotron losses due to the intra-cluster magnetic field. The mechanisms of the particle acceleration and the properties of the magnetic field are still poorly understood. We search for diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters. Here, we study the complex galaxy cluster Abell 2069, for which X-ray observations indicate a recent merger. We investigate the cluster's radio continuum emission by deep Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telesc…
Cluster mergers are an important laboratory for studying the behaviour of dark matter (DM) and intracluster gas. There are dissociative collisions that can separate the intracluster gas from the DM. Abell 2034 presents clear dissociative features observed by X-rays and gravitational lensing. The cluster, at $z$ = 0.114, consists of two substructures with mass ratio of about 1:2.2, separated by $\sim$720 kpc. The X-ray emission peak is offcentred from the south DM peak by $\sim$350 kpc. Using N-body hydrodynamical simulations, we aim to reconstruct the dynamic history of the collision, reproduc…
A number of radio observations have revealed the presence of large synchrotron-emitting sources associated with the intra-cluster medium. There is strong observational evidence that the emitting particles have been (re-)accelerated by shocks and turbulence generated during merger events. The particles that are accelerated are thought to have higher initial energies than those in the thermal pool but the origin of such mildly relativistic particles remains uncertain and needs to be further investigated. The galaxy cluster Abell 1914 is a massive galaxy cluster in which X-ray observations show c…
We present deep Chandra observations of the pre-merger galaxy cluster Abell 98. Abell 98 is a complex merging system. While the northern (A98N) and central subclusters (A98S) are merging along the north-south direction, A98S is undergoing a separate late-stage merger, with two distinct X-ray cores. We report detection of gas sloshing spirals in A98N and in the eastern core of A98S. We detect two cold front edges in A98N. We find two more surface brightness edges along the east direction of the eastern core and west direction of the western core of A98S. We measure the temperatures and gas dens…

We present LOFAR data from 110--180~MHz of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 1682, alongside archival optical, radio and X-ray data. Our 6 arc-second resolution images at low frequencies reveal new structures associated with numerous radio galaxies in the cluster. At 20 arc-second resolution we see diffuse emission throughout the cluster over hundreds of kpc, indicating particle acceleration mechanisms are in play as a result of the cluster merger event and powerful active galactic nuclei. We show that a significant part of the cluster emission is from an old radio galaxy with very steep spectr…
Ram pressure stripping has been proven to be effective in shaping galaxy properties in dense environments at low redshift. The availability of MUSE observations of a sample of distant (z$\sim 0.3-0.5$) clusters has allowed to search for galaxies subject to this phenomenon at significant lookback times. In this paper we describe how we discovered and characterized 13 ram-pressure stripped galaxies in the central regions of two intermediate redshift (z$\sim$0.3-0.4) clusters, A2744 and A370, using the MUSE spectrograph. Emission line properties as well as stellar features have been analyzed to i…
To investigate the dynamics of the galaxy cluster A2142, we compile an extended catalog of 2239 spectroscopic redshifts of sources, including newly measured 237 redshifts, within 30 arcmin from the cluster center. With the $σ$-plateau algorithm from the caustic method, we identify 868 members and a number of substructures in the galaxy distribution both in the outskirts, out to $\sim$3.5 Mpc from the cluster center, and in the central region. In the outskirts, one substructure overlaps a falling clump of gas previously identified in the X-ray band. These substructures suggests the presence of …
We present spectroscopy of 880 galaxies within a 2-degree field around the massive, merging cluster Abell 3266. This sample, which includes 704 new measurements, was combined with the existing redshifts measurements to generate a sample of over 1300 spectroscopic redshifts; the largest spectroscopic sample in the vicinity of A3266 to date. We define a cluster sub-sample of 790 redshifts which lie within a velocity range of 14,000 to 22,000 kms$^{-1}$ and within 1 degree of the cluster centre. A detailed structural analysis finds A3266 to have a complex dynamical structure containing six groups…
Galaxy groups and clusters are the main tools used to test cosmological models and to study the environmental effect of galaxy formation. This work provides a catalogue of galaxy groups and clusters, as well as potentially merging systems based on the SDSS main galaxy survey. We identified galaxy groups and clusters using the modified friends-of-friends (FoF) group finder designed specifically for flux-limited galaxy surveys. The FoF group membership is refined by multimodality analysis to find subgroups and by using the group virial radius and escape velocity to expose unbound galaxies. We lo…
We present here new insights about the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2034 ($\bar{z}=0.114$) based on a combined weak lensing and dynamical analysis. From our deep Subaru $BR_Cz'$ images plus Gemini-GMOS/N low-resolution spectra accompanied by available redshift data, we have obtained the individual masses of the colliding subclusters as well as estimated a timeline of the process. The collision event happened $0.56^{+0.15}_{-0.22}$ Gyr ago between the subclusters A2034S ($M_{200}^S=2.35_{-0.99}^{+0.84}\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) and A2034N ($M_{200}^N=1.08_{-0.71}^{+0.51}\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\o…
Studies of cluster galaxies are increasingly finding galaxies with spectacular one-sided tails of gas and young stars, suggestive of intense ram-pressure stripping. These so-called "jellyfish" galaxies typically have late-type morphology. In this paper, we present MUSE observations of an elliptical galaxy in Abell 2670 with long tails of material visible in the optical spectra, as well as blobs with tadpole-like morphology. The spectra in the central part of the galaxy reveals a stellar component as well as ionized gas. The stellar component does not have significant rotation, while the ionize…
Aims: We investigate the effect of ram pressure stripping (RPS) on simulations of merging pairs of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Our goal is to provide an estimate of the combined effect of merging and RPS on stripping efficiency and star formation rate. Methods: We make use of the combined N-body/hydrodynamic code GADGET-2. In our simulations, we vary mass ratios between 1:4 and 1:8 in a binary merger. We sample different geometric configurations of the merging systems (edge-on and face-on mergers, different impact parameters). Furthermore, we vary the properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) …

We analyzed the contribution of the intracluster light (ICL) to the total luminosity of two massive galaxy clusters observed by the Hubble Space Telescope within the Frontier Fields program, Abell 370 (z ~ 0.375) and Abell S1063 (z ~ 0.348), in order to correlate it with the dynamical stage of these systems. We applied an algorithm based on the Chebyshev-Fourier functions called CICLE, specially developed to disentangle the ICL from the light of galaxies and measure the ICL fraction. We measured the ICL fraction in three broadband optical filters, F435W, F606W, and F814W, without assuming any p…
Abell 2146 ($z=0.232$) is a massive galaxy cluster currently undergoing a spectacular merger in the plane of the sky with a bullet-like morphology. It was the first system in which both the bow and upstream shock fronts were detected at X-ray wavelengths (Mach$\sim2$), yet deep GMRT 325 MHz observations failed to detect extended radio emission associated with the cluster as is typically seen in such systems. We present new, multi-configuration $1-2$ GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of Abell 2146 totalling 16 hours of observations. These data reveal for the first time the …
Context: Chandra observations of the Abell 3411-3412 merging system have revealed an outbound bullet-like sub-cluster in the northern part and many surface brightness (SB) edges at the southern periphery, where multiple diffuse sources are also reported from radio observations. Notably, a south-eastern radio relic associated with fossil plasma from a radio galaxy and with a detected X-ray edge provides direct evidence of shock re-acceleration. The properties of the reported X-ray edges have yet to be constrained from a thermodynamic view. Aims: We use the XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations to …
Massive, merging galaxy clusters often host giant, diffuse radio sources that arise from shocks and turbulence; hence, radio observations can be useful for determining the merger state of a cluster. In preparation for a larger study, we selected three clusters -- Abell 1319, Abell 1314, and RXC J1501.3+4220 (Z7215) -- making use of the new LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) at 120-168 MHz, and together with archival data, show that these clusters appear to be in pre-merging, merging, and post-merging states, respectively. We argue that Abell 1319 is likely in its pre-merging phase, where three…
We present a dynamical analysis of the merging galaxy cluster system Abell 2146 using spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope. As revealed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the system is undergoing a major merger and has a gas structure indicative of a recent first core passage. The system presents two large shock fronts, making it unique amongst these rare systems. The hot gas structure indicates that the merger axis must be close to the plane of the sky and that the two merging clusters are relatively close in mass, from the observation o…
Here we analyze radio, optical, and X-ray data for a peculiar cluster Abell 578. This cluster is not fully relaxed and consists of two merging sub-systems. The brightest cluster galaxy, CGPG 0719.8+6704, is a pair of interacting ellipticals with projected separation $\sim$10 kpc, the brighter of which hosts the radio source 4C +67.13. The Fanaroff-Riley type-II radio morphology of 4C +67.13 is unusual for central radio galaxies in local Abell clusters. Our new optical spectroscopy revealed that both nuclei of the CGPG 0719.8+6704 pair are active, albeit at low accretion rates corresponding to …
We present an X-ray spectral analysis of the nearby double radio relic merging cluster Abell 3376 ($z$ = 0.046), observed with the $Suzaku$ XIS instrument. These deep ($\sim$360 ks) observations cover the entire double relic region in the outskirts of the cluster. These diffuse radio structures are amongst the largest and arc-shaped relics observed in combination with large-scale X-ray shocks in a merging cluster. We confirm the presence of a stronger shock (${\cal M}_{\rm{W}}$ = 2.8 $\pm~0.4$) in the western direction at $r\sim26$', derived from a temperature and surface brightness discontinu…

Environmental effects are crucial to the understanding of the evolution of galaxies in dense environments, such as galaxy clusters. Using the large field-of-view of SITELLE, the unique imaging fourier transform spectrograph at CFHT, we are able to obtain 2D spectral information for a large and complete sample of cluster galaxies out to the infall region. We describe a pipeline developed to identify emission line galaxies (ELGs) from the datacube using cross-correlation techniques. We present results based on the spatial offsets between the emission-line regions and stellar continua in ELGs fro…
We present deep ($205 \rm ks$), \Chandra observations of the \ab295 binary merging cluster ($z=0.30$). In the X-ray image, the secondary component is clearly visible as a surface brightness peak, while the primary cluster has a flatter distribution. We found cool gas ($\sim 6 \rm keV$) associated with the secondary, while the central temperature of the primary does not deviate significantly from the mean temperature of the cluster of $\sim 9.5 \rm keV$. In the vicinity of the primary's core we found the hottest region in the cluster accompanied by a surface brightness discontinuity. We propose…
We investigate the star formation rate and its location in the major merger cluster Abell 2465 at $z$ = 0.245. Optical properties of the cluster are described in Paper I. Measurements of the H$α$ and infrared dust emission of galaxies in the cluster were made with an interference filter centred on the redshifted line at a wavelength of 817 nm and utilized data from the WISE satellite 12 $μ$m band. Imaging in the Johnson $U$ and $B$ bands was obtained, and along with SDSS $u$ and $r$ was used to study the blue fraction, which appears enhanced, as a further signatures of star formation in the cl…
We report the first unambiguous detection of an axial merger shock in the early-stage merging cluster Abell 98 using deep (227 ks) Chandra observations. The shock is about 420 kpc south from the northern subcluster of Abell 98, in between the northern and central subclusters, with a Mach number of M $\approx$ 2.3 $\pm$ 0.3. Our discovery of the axial merger shock front unveils a critical epoch in the formation of a massive galaxy cluster, when two subclusters are caught in the early phase of the merging process. We find that the electron temperature in the post-shock region favors the instant …
Massive merging galaxy clusters often host diffuse Mpc-scale radio synchrotron emission. This emission originates from relativistic electrons in the ionized intracluster medium (ICM). An important question is how these synchrotron emitting relativistic electrons are accelerated. Our aim is to search for diffuse emission in the Frontier Fields clusters Abell S1063 and Abell 370 and characterize its properties. While these clusters are very massive and well studied at some other wavelengths, no diffuse emission has been reported for these clusters so far. We obtained 325 MHz Giant Metrewave Radi…
Jellyfish are cluster galaxies that experience strong ram-pressure effects that strip their gas. Their H$α$ images reveal ionized gas tails up to 100 kpc, which could be hosting ongoing star formation. Here we report the ultraviolet (UV) imaging observation of the jellyfish galaxy JO201 obtained at a spatial resolution $\sim$ 1.3 kpc. The intense burst of star formation happening in the tentacles is the focus of the present study. JO201 is the "UV-brightest cluster galaxy" in Abell 85 ($z \sim$ 0.056) with knots and streams of star formation in the ultraviolet. We identify star forming knots b…
A major hurdle for modified gravity theories is to explain the dynamics of galaxy clusters. A case is made for a generalized gravitational theory called Scalar-Tensor-Vector-Gravity (STVG) or MOG (modified gravity) to explain merging cluster dynamics. The paper presents the results of a re-analysis of the Bullet Cluster, as well as an analysis of the Train Wreck Cluster in the weak gravitational field limit without dark matter. The King-$β$ model is used to fit the X-ray data of both clusters, and the $κ$-maps are computed using the parameters of this fit. The amount of galaxies in the cluster…
Abell 2163 at $z \simeq 0.201$ is one of the most massive galaxy clusters known, very likely in a post-merging phase. Data from several observational windows suggest a complex mass structure with interacting subsystems, which makes the reconstruction of a realistic merging scenario very difficult. A missing key element in this sense is unveiling the cluster mass distribution at high resolution. We perform such a reconstruction of the cluster inner total mass through a strong lensing model based on new spectroscopic redshift measurements. We use data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (…

We present results from an X-ray and radio study of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 115. We use the full set of 5 Chandra observations taken of A115 to date (360 ks total integration) to construct high-fidelity temperature and surface brightness maps. We also examine radio data from the Very Large Array at 1.5 GHz and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 0.6 GHz. We propose that the high X-ray spectral temperature between the subclusters results from the interaction of the bow shocks driven into the intracluster medium by the motion of the subclusters relative to one another. We have identi…

Multi-wavelength observations show that Abell 1367 (A1367) is a dynamically young cluster, with at least two subclusters merging along the SE-NW direction. With the wide-field XMM-Newton mosaic of A1367, we discover a previously unknown merger shock at the NW edge of the cluster. We estimate the shock Mach number from the density and temperature jumps as $M_ρ=1.21\pm0.08$ and $M_T=1.60\pm0.07$, respectively. This shock region also corresponds to a radio relic discovered with the VLA and GBT, which could be produced by the shock re-acceleration of pre-existing seed relativistic electrons. We su…
We present the first results from an integral field (IFU) spectroscopic survey of a 75kpc region around three Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), combining over 100 IFU fibres to study the intracluster light (ICL). We fit population synthesis models to estimate age and metallicity. For Abell 85 and Abell 2457, the ICL is best-fit with a fraction of old, metal-rich stars like in the BCG, but requires 30-50% young and metal-poor stars, a component not found in the BCGs. This is consistent with the ICL having been formed by a combination of interactions with less massive, younger, more metal-poor …
We present the MUSE observations of UGC 6697, a giant (Mstar 10^{10} Msol) spiral galaxy infalling in the nearby cluster Abell 1367. During its high velocity transit through the intracluster medium (ICM), the hydrodynamical interactions with the ICM produce a ~ 100 kpc tail of ionized gas that we map with a mosaic of five MUSE pointings up to 60 kpc from the galaxy. CGCG 97087N, a small companion that lies at few arcminutes in projection from UGC 6697, is also suffering from the hydrodynamic action of the ICM of the cluster. Along the whole extent of the tail we detect diffuse H$α$ emission an…
A number of merging galaxy clusters show the presence of large-scale radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). These synchrotron sources are generally classified as radio haloes and radio relics. Whilst it is commonly accepted that mergers play a crucial role in the formation of radio haloes and relics, not all the merging clusters show the presence of giant diffuse radio sources and this provides important information concerning current models. The Abell 781 complex is a spectacular system composed of an apparent chain of clusters on the sky. Its main component is undergo…
Abell 1351 is a massive merging cluster that hosts a giant radio halo and a bright radio edge blended in the halo. In this paper, we present the first ever spectral analysis of this cluster using GMRT 610 MHz and VLA 1.4 GHz archival data and discuss the radio edge property. Using \textit{Chandra} data, we report the first tentative detection of shock front at the location of the edge in A1351 with discontinuities in both X-ray surface brightness and temperature. Our analysis strengthens the previous claim of the detected "edge" being a high luminosity radio relic. The radio relic has an integ…
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the Abell 3391/Abell 3395 intercluster filament. It has been suggested that the galaxy clusters Abell 3395, Abell 3391, and the galaxy group ESO-161 located between the two clusters, are in alignment along a large-scale intercluster filament. We find that the filament is aligned close to the plane of the sky, in contrast to previous results. We find a global projected filament temperature kT = $4.45_{-0.55}^{+0.89}$~keV, electron density $n_e=1.08^{+0.06}_{-0.05} \times 10^{-4}$~cm$^{-3}$, and $M_{\rm gas} = 2.7^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{1…
We present the first in depth dynamical analysis of the archetypal Wide-Angle Tailed (WAT) cluster Abell 562. We have combined Gemini observations with archival data from the literature to form a sample of 76 cluster members and derived a mean redshift of $0.1088 \pm 0.0004$ and a velocity dispersion of $919 \pm 116$ km s$^{-1}$. This relatively large velocity dispersion suggests either a very massive cluster ($M_{dyn} > 6.9 \times$ 10$^{14}$ $M_{sun}$) and/or a merger system. The merger model is supported by a non-Gaussian galaxy velocity distribution, an elongated spatial distribution of lik…
Red sequence galaxies form with an intense burst of star formation in the early universe to evolve passively into massive, metal rich, old galaxies at z ~ 0. But Abell 1314 (z=0.034) is found to host almost all red sequence galaxy members -- identified using the mz index, classified using the Principle Component Analysis technique and SDSS colour correlations -- some of which show properties of low-mass, star forming, and metal rich galaxies. The variably spread Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) near the core forms a vital part in influencing the evolution of these members. To study their evolution, …
Abell 407 (A407) is a unique galaxy cluster hosting a central compact group of nine galaxies (named as 'Zwicky's Nonet'; G1 - G9 in this work) within a 30 kpc radius region. The cluster core also hosts a luminous radio active galactic nucleus (AGN), 4C 35.06 with helically twisted jets extending over 200 kpc. With a 44 ks Chandra observation of A407, we characterize the X-ray properties of its intracluster medium (ICM) and central galaxies. The mean X-ray temperature of A407 is 2.7 keV and the $M_{200}$ is $1.9 \times 10^{14} {M_{\odot}}$. We suggest that A407 has a weak cool core at $r < 60$ …
Abell~1142 is a low-mass galaxy cluster at low redshift containing two comparable Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG) resembling a scaled-down version of the Coma Cluster. Our Chandra analysis reveals an X-ray emission peak, roughly 100 kpc away from either BCG, which we identify as the cluster center. The emission center manifests itself as a second beta-model surface brightness component distinct from that of the cluster on larger scales. The center is also substantially cooler and more metal rich than the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM), which makes Abell 1142 appear to be a cool core cl…
We study the impact of local environment on the transformation of spiral galaxies in three nearby ($z < 0.08$) Abell clusters: A85/A496/A2670. These systems were observed in HI with the Very Large Array, covering a volume extending beyond the virial radius and detecting 10, 58, 38 galaxies, respectively. High fractions (0.40--0.86) of bright spirals [log$(M_{*}/M_{\odot})=9-10$] are not detected in HI. We provide further evidence of environmental effects consisting in significant fractions (0.10--0.33) of abnormal objects and a number of red (passive) spirals, suggesting an ongoing process of …
