We report the first unambiguous detection of an axial merger shock in the early-stage merging cluster Abell 98 using deep (227 ks) Chandra observations. The shock is about 420 kpc south from the northern subcluster of Abell 98, in between the northern and central subclusters, with a Mach number of M $\approx$ 2.3 $\pm$ 0.3. Our discovery of the axial merger shock front unveils a critical epoch in the formation of a massive galaxy cluster, when two subclusters are caught in the early phase of the merging process. We find that the electron temperature in the post-shock region favors the instant collisionless model, where electrons are strongly heated at the shock front, by interactions with the magnetic field. We also report on the detection of an intercluster gas filament, with a temperature of kT = 1.07 $\pm$ 0.29 keV, along the merger axis of Abell 98. The measured properties of the gas in the filament are consistent with previous observations and numerical simulations of the hottest, densest parts of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), where WHIM filaments interface with the virialization regions of galaxy clusters.
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the Abell 3391/Abell 3395 intercluster filament. It has been suggested that the galaxy clusters Abell 3395, Abell 3391, and the galaxy group ESO-161 located between the two clusters, are in alignment along a large-scale intercluster filament. We find that the filament is aligned close to the plane of the sky, in contrast to previous results. We find a global projected filament temperature kT = $4.45_{-0.55}^{+0.89}$~keV, electron density $n_e=1.08^{+0.06}_{-0.05} \times 10^{-4}$~cm$^{-3}$, and $M_{\rm gas} = 2.7^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{1…
Filaments of the cosmic web have long been associated with the threadlike structures seen in galaxy redshift surveys. However, despite their baryon content being dominated by hot gas, these filaments have been an elusive target for X-ray observations. Recently, detections of filaments in very deep (2.4 Msec) observations with Chandra were reported around Abell 133 (z=0.0559). To verify these claims, we conducted a multi-object spectrographic campaign on the Baade 6.5m telescope around Abell 133; this resulted in a catalog of ${\sim}3000$ new redshift measurements, of which 254 are of galaxies …
We present the results of interferometric observations of the cool core of Abell 1795 at CO(1-0) using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy. In agreement with previous work, we detect a significant amount of cold molecular gas (3.9 +/- 0.4 x10^9 Msun) in the central ~10 kpc. We report the discovery of a substantial clump of cold molecular gas at clustercentric radius of 30 kpc (2.9 +/- 0.4 x10^9 Msun), coincident in both position and velocity with the warm, ionized filaments. We also place an upper limit on the H_2 mass at the outer edge of the star-forming filament, co…
The results of Suzaku observations of the outskirts of Abell 3395 including a large-scale structure filament toward Abell 3391 are presented. We measured temperature and abundance distributions from the southern outskirt of Abell 3395 to the north at the virial radius, where a filament structure has been found in the former X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect observations between Abell 3391 and 3395. The overall temperature structure is consistent with the universal profile proposed by Okabe et al.(2014) for relaxed clusters except for the filament region. A hint of the ICM heating is found be…
We report a significant detection of the hot intergalactic medium in the filamentary bridge connecting the galaxy clusters Abell 399 and Abell 401. This result is enabled by a low-noise, high-resolution map of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and Planck satellite. The ACT data provide the $1.65'$ resolution that allows us to clearly separate the profiles of the clusters, whose centres are separated by $37'$, from the gas associated with the filament. A model that fits for only the two clusters is ruled out compared to one that includes a bridge co…

We present a multiwavelength study of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 1763 at redshift z = 0.231. Image analysis of a 19.6 ks Chandra archival observation reveals a cluster-wide spiral of enhanced surface brightness in the intracluster medium (ICM). While such spirals are understood to form in clusters with sloshing strong cool cores (SCCs), the gas comprising the spiral's apex is of intermediate entropy ($\sim$ 110 keV cm$^{2}$) and cooling time ($\sim$ 6.8 Gyr), indicating core disruption is occurring throughout the spiral formation process. Two subclusters dominated by the second- and thir…

We examine Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observations of the Abell 2029/2033 system to investigate the nature of a bridge of X-ray emission joining the two galaxy clusters. By modelling the contributions from the outskirts of the two clusters, and excluding the emission from the southern infalling group and the background group LOS9, we find a significant excess of X-ray emission between the two clusters at the level of 6.5-7.0$σ$, depending on the choice of model, that cannot be explained by the overlap of the clusters. This excess component to the surface brightness is consistent with bein…
We present a new analysis of very deep Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1795. Utilizing nearly 750 ks of net ACIS imaging, we are able to resolve the thermodynamic structure of the Intracluster Medium (ICM) on length scales of ~ 1 kpc near the cool core. We find several previously unresolved structures, including a high pressure feature to the north of the BCG that appears to arise from the bulk motion of Abell 1795's cool core. To the south of the cool core, we find low temperature (~ 3 keV), diffuse ICM gas extending for distances of ~ 50 kpc spatially coincident with previou…

Revealing the intricacies of radio galaxies and filaments in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2255. I. Insights from deep LOFAR-VLBI sub-arcsecond resolution images
We present far-UV spectroscopy from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope of a cool, star-forming filament in the core of Abell 1795. These data, which span 1025A - 1700A, allow for the simultaneous modeling of the young stellar populations and the intermediate-temperature (10^5.5 K) gas in this filament, which is far removed (~30 kpc) from the direct influence of the central AGN. Using a combination of UV absorption line indices and stellar population synthesis modeling, we find evidence for ongoing star formation, with the youngest stars having ages of 7.5 +/- 2.0 Myr…
Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound structures in the Universe. They grow by accreting smaller structures in a merging process that produces shocks and turbulence in the intra-cluster gas. We observed a ridge of radio emission connecting the merging galaxy clusters Abell 0399 and Abell 0401 with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) at 140 MHz. This emission requires a population of relativistic electrons and a magnetic field located in a filament between the two galaxy clusters. We performed simulations to show that a volume-filling distribution of weak shocks may re-accelera…
We present new Chandra X-ray observations of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the cool core cluster Abell 2597. The data reveal an extensive kpc-scale X-ray cavity network as well as a 15 kpc filament of soft-excess gas exhibiting strong spatial correlation with archival VLA radio data. In addition to several possible scenarios, multiwavelength evidence may suggest that the filament is associated with multiphase (10^3 - 10^7 K) gas that has been entrained and dredged-up by the propagating radio source. Stemming from a full spectral analysis, we also present profiles and 2D spectral maps o…
We examine deep stacked Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1795 (over 700ks) to study in depth a large (34 kpc radius) cavity in the X-ray emission. Curiously, despite the large energy required to form this cavity (4PV=4x10^60 erg), there is no obvious counterpart to the cavity on the opposite side of the cluster, which would be expected if it has formed due to jets from the central AGN inflating bubbles. There is also no radio emission associated with the cavity, and no metal enhancement or filaments between it and the BCG, which are normally found for bubbles inflated by AGN wh…
In the local universe, a large fraction of the baryon content is believed to exist as diffuse gas in filaments. While this gas is directly observable in X-ray emission around clusters of galaxies, it is primarily studied through its UV absorption. Recently, X-ray observations of large-scale filaments connecting to the cosmic web around the nearby ($z=0.05584$) cluster Abell 133 were reported. One of these filaments is intersected by the sightline to quasar [VV98] J010250.2$-$220929, allowing for a first-ever census of cold, cool, and warm gas in a filament of the cosmic web where hot gas has b…
We present new ALMA observations tracing the morphology and velocity structure of the molecular gas in the central galaxy of the cluster Abell 1795. The molecular gas lies in two filaments that extend 5 - 7 kpc to the N and S from the nucleus and project exclusively around the outer edges of two inner radio bubbles. Radio jets launched by the central AGN have inflated bubbles filled with relativistic plasma into the hot atmosphere surrounding the central galaxy. The N filament has a smoothly increasing velocity gradient along its length from the central galaxy's systemic velocity at the nucleu…
We take a close look at the galaxies in the Coma Supercluster and assess the role of the environment (in the form of cluster, group and supercluster filament) in their evolution, in particular examining the role of groups. We characterise the groups according to intrinsic properties such as richness and halo mass, as well as their position in the supercluster and proximity to the two rich clusters, Abell 1656 (Coma) and Abell 1367. We devise a new way of characterising the local environment using a kernel density estimator. We find that apart from the dominant effects of the galaxy mass, the e…
New MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy centered on the galaxy cluster A2626 and covering a ${\sim} 1.8\,\text{deg}^2$ area out to $z \sim 0.46$ more than doubles the number of galaxy redshifts in this region. The spectra confirm four clusters previously identified photometrically. A2625, which was previously thought to be a close neighbor of A2626, is in fact much more distant. The new data show six substructures associated with A2626 and five more associated with A2637. There is also a highly collimated collection of galaxies and galaxy groups between A2626 and A2637 having at least three and probabl…
A rare opportunity to distinguish internal and environmental effects on galaxy evolution is afforded by "Supergroups", systems which are rich and massive but include several comparably rich substructures, surrounded by filaments. We present here a multiwavelength photometric and spectroscopic study of the galaxy population in the Supergroup Abell 1882 at $z$=0.139, combining new data from the MMT and Hectospec with archival results from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), NED, the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) and Galaxy Evolution Explorer…
We present LOFAR observations of one of the most spectacular objects in the radio sky: Abell 2255. This is a nearby ($z = 0.0806$) merging galaxy cluster hosting one of the first radio halos ever detected in the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The deep LOFAR images at 144 MHz of the central $\sim10$ Mpc$^2$ region show a plethora of emission on different scales, from tens of kpc to above Mpc sizes. In this work, we focus on the innermost region of the cluster. Among the numerous interesting features observed, we discover remarkable bright and filamentary structures embedded in the radio halo. We i…
We perform a detailed X-ray study of the filaments surrounding the brightest cluster galaxies in a sample of nearby galaxy clusters using deep Chandra observations, namely the Perseus, Centaurus and Virgo clusters, and Abell 1795. We compare the X-ray properties and spectra of the filaments in all of these systems, and find that their Chandra X-ray spectra are all broadly consistent with an absorbed two temperature thermal model, with temperature components at 0.75 and 1.7 keV. We find that it is also possible to model the Chandra ACIS filament spectra with a charge exchange model provided a t…
SRG/eROSITA PV observations revealed the A3391/95 cluster system and the Northern Clump (MCXC J0621.7-5242 galaxy cluster) are aligning along a cosmic filament in soft X-rays, similarly to what has been seen in simulations before. We aim to understand the dynamical state of the Northern Clump as it enters the atmosphere ($3\times R_{200}$) of A3391. We analyzed joint eROSITA, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observations to probe the morphological, thermal, and chemical properties of the Northern Clump from its center out to a radius of 988 kpc ($R_{200}$). We utilized the ASKAP/EMU radio data, DECam o…
Abell 2261 (A2661) is a well-studied fossil cluster, but previous studies give contradictory results on its dynamical states, such as its X-ray central entropy and magnitude gap. To improve our understanding of its dynamical state, we conduct multi-object spectroscopic observations with Hectospec on the MMT, covering an area out to 5 virial radii from the cluster center, and get improved completeness and membership. Using this new data, we calculate multiple dynamical indicators including gaussianity, distance offset, and velocity offset. These indicators suggest that A2261 is moderately relax…
We study the rotational motion of the galaxy cluster Abell 2107 at redshift z = 0.04 and its connection to nearby large-scale structures using a large amount of spectroscopic redshift data. By combining 978 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1968 galaxies with measured redshifts at clustercentric radius $R < 60^\prime$. Our sample has high (80%) and spatially uniform completeness at r-band apparent magnitude $m_{r,\textrm{Petro},0}$ < 19.1. We first apply the caustic method to the sample and identify 285 member galaxies…
We present results from Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of Abell 98 (A98), a galaxy cluster with three major components: a relatively bright subcluster to the north (A98N), a disturbed subcluster to the south (A98S), and a fainter subcluster to the far south (A98SS). We find evidence for surface brightness and temperature asymmetries in A98N consistent with a shock-heated region to the south, which could be created by an early stage merger between A98N and A98S. Deeper observations are required to confirm this result. We also find that A98S has an asymmetric core temperature structure, lik…
We report a multi-wavelength study of two evolved planetary nebulae (PNs) M 2-55 and Abell 2. Deep optical narrow-band images ([O III], H?, and [N II]) of M 2-55 reveal two pairs of bipolar lobes and a new faint arc-like structure. This arc-shaped filament around M 2-55 appears a well-defined boundary from southwest to southeast, strongly suggesting that this nebula is in interaction with its surrounding interstellar medium. From the imaging data of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) all-sky survey, we discovered extensive mid-infrared halos around these PNs, which are approximately tw…

Observations of the cosmic microwave background indicate that baryons account for 5% of the Universe's total energy content. In the local Universe, the census of all observed baryons falls short of this estimate by a factor of two. Cosmological simulations indicate that the missing baryons might not have condensed into virialized haloes, but reside throughout the filaments of the cosmic web (where matter density is larger than average) as a low-density plasma at temperatures of $10^5-10^7$ kelvin, known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium. There have been previous claims of the detection of w…
We present the galaxy luminosity function (LF) of the Abell 119 cluster down to $M_r\sim-14$ mag based on deep images in the $u$-, $g$-, and $r$-bands taken by using MOSAIC II CCD mounted on the Blanco 4m telescope at the CTIO. The cluster membership was accurately determined based on the radial velocity information as well as on the color-magnitude relation for bright galaxies and the scaling relation for faint galaxies. The overall LF exhibits a bimodal behavior with a distinct dip at $r\sim18.5$ mag ($M_r\sim-17.8$ mag), which is more appropriately described by a two-component function. The…
We explore the connection between dust and star formation, in the context of environmental effects on galaxy evolution. In particular, we exploit the susceptibility of dust to external processes to assess the influence of dense environment on star-forming galaxies. We have selected cluster Abell 1758 from the Local Cluster Substructure Survey (LoCuSS). Its complex dynamical state is an ideal test-bench to track dust removal and destruction in galaxies due to merger and accretion shocks. We present a systematic panchromatic study (from 0.15 $\rm μ$m with GALEX to 500 $\rm μ$m with Herschel) of …
We present spectroscopy of 880 galaxies within a 2-degree field around the massive, merging cluster Abell 3266. This sample, which includes 704 new measurements, was combined with the existing redshifts measurements to generate a sample of over 1300 spectroscopic redshifts; the largest spectroscopic sample in the vicinity of A3266 to date. We define a cluster sub-sample of 790 redshifts which lie within a velocity range of 14,000 to 22,000 kms$^{-1}$ and within 1 degree of the cluster centre. A detailed structural analysis finds A3266 to have a complex dynamical structure containing six groups…
We report the detection of CO emission in the recently discovered multiphase isolated gas cloud in the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1367. The cloud is located about 800 kpc in projection from the center of the cluster and at a projected distance of > 80 kpc from any galaxy. It is the first and the only known isolated intra-cluster cloud detected in X-ray, H$α$, and CO emission. We found a total of about $2.2\times 10^8 M_\odot$ of H$_2$ with the IRAM 30-m telescope in two regions, one associated with the peak of H$α$ emission and another with the peak of X-ray emission surrounded by weak H$α$ f…

Multi-phase filamentary structures around Brightest Cluster Galaxies are likely a key step of AGN-feedback. We observed molecular gas in 3 cool cluster cores: Centaurus, Abell S1101, and RXJ1539.5 and gathered ALMA and MUSE data for 12 other clusters. Those observations show clumpy, massive and long, 3--25 kpc, molecular filaments, preferentially located around the radio bubbles inflated by the AGN (Active Galactic Nucleus). Two objects show nuclear molecular disks. The optical nebula is certainly tracing the warm envelopes of cold molecular filaments. Surprisingly, the radial profile of the H…
We present an overview of a multi-wavelength survey of the Shapley supercluster (SSC; z~0.05) covering a contiguous area of 260 h^-2_70 Mpc^2 including the supercluster core. The project main aim is to quantify the influence of cluster-scale mass assembly on galaxy evolution in one of the most massive structures in the local Universe. The Shapley supercluster survey (ShaSS) includes nine Abell clusters (A3552, A3554, A3556, A3558, A3559, A3560, A3562, AS0724, AS0726) and two poor clusters (SC1327- 312, SC1329-313) showing evidence of cluster-cluster interactions. Optical (ugri) and near-infrar…
We study the structure of the galaxy cluster Abell 523 (A523) at z=0.104 using new spectroscopic data for 132 galaxies acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, new photometric data from the Isaac Newton Telescope, and X-ray and radio data from the Chandra and Very Large Array archives. We estimate the velocity dispersion of the galaxy population, sigmaV=949 km/s, and the X-ray temperature of the hot intracluster medium, kT=5.3 keV. We infer that A523 is a massive system: M200 about 7-9 x10E14 Msun. The analysis of the optical data confirms the presence of two subclusters, 0.75 Mpc apart, …

The Cosmic Web is a complex network of filaments, walls and voids that represent the largest structures in the Universe. In this network, which is the direct result of structure formation, galaxy clusters occupy central positions as the nodes, connected through the filaments. In this work, we investigate the position in the Cosmic Web of one of the most known and best studied clusters of galaxies, the Coma cluster. We make use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) Main Galaxy Sample and of the Discrete Persistent Structure Extractor (DisPerSE) to detect large scale filament…
We find that the minor axes of the ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in Abell 2634 tend to be aligned with the major axis of the central dominant galaxy, at a $\gtrsim 95\%$ confidence level. This alignment is produced by the bright UDGs with the absolute magnitudes $M_r<-15.3$ mag, and outer-region UDGs with $R>0.5R_{200}$. The alignment signal implies that these bright, outer-region UDGs are very likely to acquire their angular momenta from the vortices around the large-scale filament before they were accreted into A2634, and form their extended stellar bodies outside of the cluster; in this sce…
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are thought to provide energy that prevents catastrophic cooling in the centers of massive galaxies and galaxy clusters. However, it remains unclear how this "feedback" process operates. We use high-resolution optical data to study the kinematics of multi-phase filamentary structures by measuring the velocity structure function (VSF) of the filaments over a wide range of scales in the centers of three nearby galaxy clusters: Perseus, Abell 2597 and Virgo. We find that the motions of the filaments are turbulent in all three clusters studied. There is a clear cor…
We present the results of a new Chandra study of the galaxy cluster A2626. The radio emission of the cluster shows a complex system of four symmetric arcs without known correlations with the X-ray emission. The mirror symmetry of the radio arcs toward the center and the presence of two optical cores in the central galaxy suggested that they may be created by pairs of precessing radio jets powered by dual AGNs inside the cD galaxy. However, previous observations failed to observe the second jetted AGN and the spectral trend due to radiative age along the radio arcs, thus challenging this interp…
