Context: Chandra observations of the Abell 3411-3412 merging system have revealed an outbound bullet-like sub-cluster in the northern part and many surface brightness (SB) edges at the southern periphery, where multiple diffuse sources are also reported from radio observations. Notably, a south-eastern radio relic associated with fossil plasma from a radio galaxy and with a detected X-ray edge provides direct evidence of shock re-acceleration. The properties of the reported X-ray edges have yet to be constrained from a thermodynamic view.
Aims: We use the XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations to reveal the thermodynamical nature of the reported re-acceleration site and other X-ray edges. Meanwhile, we aim to investigate the temperature profile in the low-density outskirts with Suzaku data.
Methods: We perform both imaging and spectral analysis to measure the density jump and the temperature jump across multiple known X-ray SB discontinuities. We present a new method to calibrate the XMM-Newton soft proton background. Archival Chandra, Suzaku, and ROSAT data are used to estimate the cosmic X-ray background and Galactic foreground levels with improved accuracy compared to standard blank sky spectra.
Results: At the south-eastern edge, both XMM-Newton and Suzaku's temperature jumps point to a $\mathcal{M}\sim1.2$ shock, which agrees with result from SB fits with Chandra, and supports the re-acceleration scenario at this shock front. The southern edge shows a more complex scenario, where a shock and the presence of stripped cold material may coincide. The Suzaku temperature profiles in the southern low density regions are marginally higher than the typical relaxed cluster temperature profile. The measured value $kT_{500}=4.84\pm0.04\pm0.19$ keV with XMM-Newton and $kT_{500}=5.17\pm0.07\pm0.13$ keV with Suzaku are significantly lower than previously inferred from Chandra.
The results from Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell2256 are presented. This cluster is a prototypical and well-studied merging system, exhibiting substructures both in the X-ray surface brightness and in the radial velocity distribution of member galaxies. There are main and sub components separating by 3'.5 in the sky and by about 2000 km s$^{-1}$ in radial velocity peaks of member galaxies. In order to measure Doppler shifts of iron K-shell lines from the two gas components by the Suzaku XIS, the energy scale of the instrument was evaluated carefully and found to be calibrated w…
We present an X-ray spectral analysis of the nearby double radio relic merging cluster Abell 3376 ($z$ = 0.046), observed with the $Suzaku$ XIS instrument. These deep ($\sim$360 ks) observations cover the entire double relic region in the outskirts of the cluster. These diffuse radio structures are amongst the largest and arc-shaped relics observed in combination with large-scale X-ray shocks in a merging cluster. We confirm the presence of a stronger shock (${\cal M}_{\rm{W}}$ = 2.8 $\pm~0.4$) in the western direction at $r\sim26$', derived from a temperature and surface brightness discontinu…
We present X-ray observations of the northern outskirts of the relaxed galaxy cluster A1413 with Suzaku, whose XIS instrument has the low intrinsic background needed to make measurements of these low surface brightness regions. We excise 15 point sources superimposed on the image above a flux of $1\times 10^{-14}$ \fluxunit (2--10keV) using XMM-Newton and Suzaku images of the cluster. We quantify all known systematic errors as part of our analysis, and show our statistical errors encompasses them for the most part. Our results extend previous measurements with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and show …
We present the results of deep 140 ks Suzaku X-ray observations of the north-east (NE) radio relic of the merging galaxy cluster Abell2255. The temperature structure of Abell2255 is measured out to 0.9 times the virial radius (1.9 Mpc) in the NE direction for the first time. The Suzaku temperature map of the central region suggests a complex temperature distribution, which agrees with previous work. Additionally, on a larger-scale, we confirm that the temperature drops from 6 keV around the cluster center to 3 keV at the outskirts, with two discontinuities at {\it r}$\sim$5\arcmin~(450 kpc) an…
We present the results from Suzaku observations of the hottest Abell galaxy cluster A2163 at $z=0.2$. To study the physics of gas heating in cluster mergers, we investigated hard X-ray emission from the merging cluster A2163, which hosts the brightest synchrotron radio halo. We analyzed hard X-ray spectra accumulated from two-pointed Suzaku observations. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission should result from the inverse Compton (IC) scattering of relativistic electrons by the CMB photons. To measure this emission, the dominant thermal emission in the hard X-ray band must be modeled in detail. To t…
We present the results of a Suzaku observation of Abell 1674, an optically very rich (richness class 3) cluster cataloged as z = 0.1066. We discover the He-like Fe K-shell line from the central region for the first time, and find that the X-ray spectrum yields a high redshift of 0.215^{+0.007}_{-0.006}. On the other hand, the spectrum of the southwestern region is fitted with a redshift of 0.11 \pm 0.02 by the He-like Fe L-shell lines, consistent with the optically determined value. The gas temperature, metal abundance, and core radius of the X-ray emission in the central region are 3.8 \pm 0.…
Based on a detailed analysis of the high-quality Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku data of the X-ray bright cluster of galaxies Abell 1795, we report clear evidence for a two-phase intracluster medium (ICM) structure, which consists of a cool (with a temperature T = 2.0-2.2 keV) and a hot (T = 5.0-5.7 keV) component that coexist and dominate the X-ray emission at least in the central 80 kpc. A third weak emission component (T = 0.8 keV) is also detected within the innermost 144 kpc and is ascribed to a portion of inter-stellar medium (ISM) of the cD galaxy. Deprojected spectral analysis reveals …
We report Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1795 that extend to r_200 ~ 2 Mpc, the radius within which the mean cluster mass density is 200 times the cosmic critical density. These observations are the first to probe the state of the intracluster medium in this object at r > 1.3 Mpc. We sample two disjoint sectors in the cluster outskirts (1.3 < r < 1.9 Mpc) and detect X-ray emission in only one of them to a limiting (3-sigma) soft X-ray surface brightness of B(0.5-2 keV) = 1.8 x 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2 deg^-2, a level less than 20% of the cosmic X-ray background brightness. We tra…
We present analysis results for a nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1631 at $z~=~0.046$ using the X-ray observatory Suzaku. This cluster is categorized as a low X-ray surface brightness cluster. To study the dynamical state of the cluster, we conduct four-pointed Suzaku observations and investigate physical properties of the Mpc-scale hot gas associated with the A1631 cluster for the first time. Unlike relaxed clusters, the X-ray image shows no strong peak at the center and an irregular morphology. We perform spectral analysis and investigate the radial profiles of the gas temperature, density, and …
We present the results of Suzaku observation of the radio halo cluster Abell 2319. The metal abundance in the central cool region is found to be higher than the surrounding region, which was not resolved in the former studies. We confirm that the line-of-sight velocities of the intracluster medium in the observed region are consistent with those of the member galaxies of entire A2319 and A2319A subgroup for the first time, though any velocity difference within the region is not detected. On the other hand, we do not find any signs of gas motion relevant to A2319B subgroup. Hard X-ray emission …
We have identified two moderately bright, rapidly variable transients in new and archival X-ray data near the Galactic center. Both objects show strong, flaring variability on timescales of tens to thousands of seconds, evidence of N_H variability, and hard spectra. XMMU J174445.5-295044 is seen at 2-10 keV fluxes of 3*10^{-11} to <10^{-12} ergs/cm^2/s, with N_H at or above 5*10^22 cm^{-2}, by XMM, Chandra, and Suzaku. A likely 2MASS counterpart with K_S=10.2 shows colors indicative of a late-type star. CXOU J174042.0-280724 is a likely counterpart to the fast hard transient IGR J17407-2808. C…
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the Abell 3391/Abell 3395 intercluster filament. It has been suggested that the galaxy clusters Abell 3395, Abell 3391, and the galaxy group ESO-161 located between the two clusters, are in alignment along a large-scale intercluster filament. We find that the filament is aligned close to the plane of the sky, in contrast to previous results. We find a global projected filament temperature kT = $4.45_{-0.55}^{+0.89}$~keV, electron density $n_e=1.08^{+0.06}_{-0.05} \times 10^{-4}$~cm$^{-3}$, and $M_{\rm gas} = 2.7^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{1…
We present Suzaku observations of the Abell 98 (A98) triple galaxy cluster system and the purported intercluster filament. The three subclusters are expected to lie along a large scale cosmic filament. With partial azimuthal coverage of the northernmost cluster, we find that the inferred entropy profile of this relatively low mass cluster ($kT \approx 2.8$ keV) adheres to expectations from models of self-similar pure gravitational collapse in the region of the virial radius. There is evidence of extended structure beyond $r_{200}$ to the north of the northernmost cluster, along the merger axis…
In recent years, several Seyfert 2 galaxies have been discovered that change state when observed in X-rays a few years apart, switching from Compton-thin to reflection-dominated or viceversa. We observed a member of this class of "Changing-look" sources, the Phoenix Galaxy, with Suzaku, with the aim of better understanding the nature of the variations. The Suzaku spectrum was analyzed, and the results compared with previous ASCA and XMM-Newton observations. The source was caught in a Compton-thin state, as in XMM-Newton, but differently from ASCA. Comparing the Suzaku and XMM-Newton observatio…
Abell 548W, one of the galaxy clusters located in the Abell 548 region, has about an order of magnitude lower X-ray luminosity compared to ordinal clusters in view of the well known intracluster medium (ICM) temperature vs X-ray luminosity (kT-L_X) relation. The cluster hosts a pair of diffuse radio sources to the north west and north, both about 10' apart from the cluster center. They are candidate radio relics, frequently associated with merging clusters. A Suzaku deep observation with exposure of 84.4 ks was performed to search signatures for merging in this cluster. The XIS detectors succe…
We report on new Suzaku and XMM-Newton results concerning HESS J1614-518, which is one of the brightest extended TeV gamma-ray sources and has two regions with intense gamma-ray emission. We newly observed the south and center regions of HESS J1614-518 with Suzaku, since the north region, including the position of the 1st brightest peak of the TeV gamma-ray emission, has already been observed. No X-ray counterpart was found at the position of the 2nd brightest peak of the TeV gamma-ray emission; we estimated the upper limit of the X-ray flux to be 1.6 \times 10^{-13} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the …
We report on partially overlapping XMM-Newton (~260 ks) and Suzaku (~100 ks) observations of the iron K band in the nearby, bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509. The source shows a resolved neutral Fe K line, most probably produced in the outer part of the accretion disc. Moreover, the source shows further emission blue-ward of the 6.4 keV line due to ionized material. This emission is well reproduced by a broad line produced in the accretion disc, while it cannot be easily described by scattering or emission from photo-ionized gas at rest. The summed spectrum of all XMM-Newton observations shows t…
We present results from the coordinated broadband X-ray observations of the extreme ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg IX X-1 performed by NuSTAR, XMM-Newton and Suzaku in late 2012. These observations provide the first high-quality spectra of Holmberg IX X-1 above 10 keV to date, extending the X-ray coverage of this remarkable source up to ~30 keV. Broadband observations were undertaken at two epochs, between which Holmberg IX X-1 exhibited both flux and strong spectral variability, increasing in luminosity from Lx = (1.90+/-0.03)e40 erg/s to Lx = (3.35+/-0.03)e40 erg/s. Neither epoch exhibi…
We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising t…
We present the first broadband 0.3-25.0 kev X-ray observations of the bright ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) Holmberg II X-1, performed by NuSTAR, XMM-Newton and Suzaku in September 2013. The NuSTAR data provide the first observations of Holmberg II X-1 above 10 keV, and reveal a very steep high-energy spectrum, similar to other ULXs observed by NuSTAR to date. These observations further demonstrate that ULXs exhibit spectral states that are not typically seen in Galactic black hole binaries. Comparison with other sources implies that Holmberg II X-1 accretes at a high fraction of its Eddingt…
MCG-5-23-16 is one of the first AGN where relativistic reverberation in the iron K line originating in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole was found, based on a short XMM-Newton observation. In this work, we present the results from long X-ray observations using Suzaku, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR designed to map the emission region using X-ray reverberation. A relativistic iron line is detected in the lag spectra on three different time-scales, allowing the emission from different regions around the black hole to be separated. Using NuSTAR coverage of energies above 10 keV reveals a lag bet…
We present the results of $Suzaku$ and $XMM-Newton$ X-ray observations of the cluster pair 1E2216.0-0401 and 1E2215.7-0404. We discover an X-ray bridge between the clusters. $Suzaku$ and $XMM-Newton$ observations revealed that each cluster hosts gas with moderate temperature of $kT_{1E2216.0-0401}=$4.8$\pm$0.1 keV and $kT_{1E2215.7-0404}=$5.8$\pm$0.2 keV, respectively. On the other hand, the bridge region shows a remarkably high temperature ({\it kT}=6.6$\pm$0.5 keV). Furthermore, at the position of the bridge, we detected an enhancement in the wavelet-decomposed soft-band (0.5-4.0 keV) $XMM-N…
The results of long XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the NW radio relic of Abell 3667 are presented. A shock is detected at the sharp outer edge of the radio relic, both in the X-ray surface brightness and the temperature profiles. The Mach number is M = 2.54^+0.80_-0.43. The temperature jump at the shock is larger than expected from the density jump, which may indicate that a dynamically important magnetic field aligned primarily parallel to the shock front is present. The gas temperature rises gradually over several arc minutes within the shock region. This could indicate that the shock ener…
Context. Galaxy clusters are continuously growing through the accretion of matter in their outskirts. This process induces inhomogeneities in the gas density distribution (clumping) which need to be taken into account to recover the physical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) at large radii. Aims. We studied the thermodynamic properties in the outskirts (R > R500) of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2142 by combining the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with the X-ray signal. Methods. We combined the SZ pressure profile measured by Planck with the XMM-Newton gas density profile to recov…
The outskirts of galaxy clusters, near the virial radius, remain relatively unexplored territory and yet are vital to our understanding of cluster growth, structure, and mass. In this presentation, we show the first results from a program to constrain the state of the outer intracluster medium (ICM) in a large sample of galaxy clusters, exploiting the strengths of three complementary X-ray observatories: Suzaku (low, stable background), XMM-Newton (high sensitivity), and Chandra (good spatial resolution). By carefully combining observations from the cluster core to beyond r_200, we are able to…
We disentangle X-ray disk reflection from complex line-of-sight absorption in the nearby Seyfert NGC 4151, using a suite of Suzaku, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton observations. Extending upon earlier published work, we pursue a physically motivated model using the latest angle-resolved version of the lamp-post geometry reflection model relxillCp_lp together with a Comptonization continuum. We use the long-look simultaneous Suzaku/NuSTAR observation to develop a baseline model wherein we model reflected emission as a combination of lamp-post components at the heights of 1.2 and 15.0 gravitational radii…
By revisiting the Suzaku and XMM-Newton data of the North Polar Spur, we discovered that the spectra are inconsistent with the traditional model consisting of pure thermal emission and neutral absorption. The most prominent discrepancies are the enhanced O VII and Ne IX forbidden-to-resonance ratios, and a high O VIII Ly$β$ line relative to other Lyman series. A collisionally ionized absorption model can naturally explain both features, while a charge exchange component can only account for the former. By including the additional ionized absorption, the plasma in the North Polar Spur can be de…
We present X-ray spectral variability studies of the ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) M81 X--6 using {\it Suzaku} and {\it XMM-Newton} observations performed during 2001--2015. The spectra were first fitted by a standard multi-temperature disk and a thermal Comptonization component which revealed spectral variability where the primary distinction is the change in the optical depth of the Comptonizing component, similar to what has been observed for other ULXs. We also fitted the spectra with a general relativistic accretion disk emission and a power-law component and found that it can reprodu…
X-ray bright active galactic nuclei represent a unique astrophysical laboratory for studying accretion physics around super-massive black holes. 4U 1344-60 is a bright Seyfert galaxy which revealed relativistic reflection features in the archival XMM-Newton observation. We present the spectroscopic results of new data obtained with the Suzaku satellite and compare them with the previous XMM-Newton observation. The X-ray continuum of 4U 1344-60 can be well described by a power-law component with the photon index ~ 1.7 modified by a fully and a partially covering local absorbers. We measured a s…
Abell 3667 is the archetype of a merging cluster with radio relics. The NW radio relic is the brightest cluster relic or halo known, and is believed to be due to a strong merger shock. We have observed the NW relic for 40 ksec of net XMM time. We observe a global decline of temperature across the relic from 6 to 1 keV, similar to the Suzaku results. Our new observations reveal a sharp change of both temperature and surface brightness near the position of the relic. The increased X-ray emission on the relic can be equivalently well described by either a thermal or nonthermal spectral model. The…
The unrivalled spatial resolution of the Chandra X-ray observatory has allowed many breakthroughs to be made in high energy astrophysics. Here we explore applications of Gaussian Gradient Magnitude (GGM) filtering to X-ray data, which dramatically improves the clarity of surface brightness edges in X-ray observations, and maps gradients in X-ray surface brightness over a range of spatial scales. In galaxy clusters, we find that this method is able to reveal remarkable substructure behind the cold fronts in Abell 2142 and Abell 496, possibly the result of Kelvin Helmholtz instabilities. In Abel…
We extend a previous cross-calibration study by the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC) on XMM-Newton/EPIC, Chandra/ACIS and BeppoSAX/MECS X-ray instruments with clusters of galaxies to Suzaku/XIS instruments. Our aim is to study the accuracy of the energy-dependent effective area calibration of the XIS instruments by comparison of spectroscopic temperatures, fluxes and fit residuals obtained with Suzaku/XIS and XMM-Newton/EPIC-pn for the same cluster. The temperatures measured in the hard 2.0-7.0 keV energy band with all instruments are consistent within…
We used six simultaneous XMM-Newton and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer plus five Suzaku observations to study the continuum spectrum and the iron emission line in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53. We modelled the spectra with two thermal components (representing the accretion disc and boundary layer), a Comptonised component (representing a hot corona), and either a Gaussian or a relativistic line component to model an iron emission line at about 6.5 keV. For the relativistic line component we used either the diskline, laor or kyrline model, the latter for three different values …
Radio relics, elongated, non-thermal, structures located at the edges of galaxy clusters, are the result of synchrotron radiation from cosmic-ray electrons accelerated by merger-driven shocks at the cluster outskirts. However, X-ray observations of such shocks in some clusters suggest that they are too weak to efficiently accelerate electrons via diffusive shock acceleration to energies required to produce the observed radio power. We examine this issue in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 3667 (A3667), which hosts a pair of radio relics. While the Northwest relic in A3667 has been well studied…
A number of merging galaxy clusters show the presence of large-scale radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). These synchrotron sources are generally classified as radio haloes and radio relics. Whilst it is commonly accepted that mergers play a crucial role in the formation of radio haloes and relics, not all the merging clusters show the presence of giant diffuse radio sources and this provides important information concerning current models. The Abell 781 complex is a spectacular system composed of an apparent chain of clusters on the sky. Its main component is undergo…
We present spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the galaxy cluster Abell S1101, also known as Sersic 159-03, with Chandra, XMM-Newton and ROSAT, and investigate the presence of soft X-ray excess emission above the contribution from the hot intra-cluster medium. In earlier papers we reported an extremely bright soft excess component that reached 100% of the thermal radiation in the R2 ROSAT band (0.2-0.4 keV), using the HI column density measurement by Dickey and Lockman. In this paper we use the newer Leiden-Argentine-Bonn survey measurements of the HI column density towards Abell S1101, signifi…
Galaxy clusters are the largest virialized objects in the universe. Their merger dynamics and their interactions with the cosmic filaments that connect them are important for our understanding of the formation of large-scale structure. In addition, cosmic filaments are thought to possess the missing baryons in the universe. Studying the interaction of galaxy clusters and filaments therefore has the potential to unveil the the origin of the baryons and the physical processes that occur during merger stages of galaxy clusters. In this paper, we study the connection between A3395 and the interclu…
Recent X-ray observations have proved to be very effective in detecting previously unknown supernova remnant shells around pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), and in these cases the characteristics of the shell provide further clues on the evolutionary stage of the embedded PWN. However, it is not clear why some PWNe are still "naked". We carried out an X-ray observational campaign targeted at the PWN G54.1+0.3, the "close cousin" of the Crab, with the aim to detect the associated SNR shell. We analyzed an XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of G54.1+0.3 and we model out the contribution of dust scatte…
We perform a detailed study of the stacked Suzaku observations of 47 galaxy clusters, spanning a redshift range of 0.01-0.45, to search for the unidentified 3.5 keV line. This sample provides an independent test for the previously detected line. We detect only a 2sigma-significant spectral feature at 3.5 keV in the spectrum of the full sample. When the sample is divided into two subsamples (cool-core and non-cool core clusters), cool-core subsample shows no statistically significant positive residuals at the line energy. A very weak (2sigma-confidence) spectral feature at 3.5 keV is permitted …
We present results from a sample of XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of interstellar clouds that cast shadows in the soft X-ray background (SXRB) - the first uniform analysis of such a sample from these missions. By fitting to the on- and off-shadow spectra, we separated the foreground and Galactic halo components of the SXRB. We tested different foreground models - two solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) models and a Local Bubble (LB) model. We also examined different abundance tables. We found that Anders & Grevesse (1989) abundances, commonly used in previous SXRB studies, may result in ove…
With the XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations, for the first time, we acquired broad-band spectra of two unidentified X-ray sources towards the Galactic bulge: 1RXS J180556.1$-$343818 and 1RXS J173905.2$-$392615. The 1RXS J180556.1$-$343818 spectrum in the $0.3$-$7$ keV band was explained by X-ray emission originated from an optically-thin thermal plasma with temperatures of $0.5$ and $1.7$ keV. The estimated absorption column density of $N_{\rm H} \sim 4 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ was significantly smaller than the Galactic HI column density towards the source. A candidate of its optical counter…
We report on the results of a $Suzaku$ observation of the plasma in the filament located between the two massive clusters of galaxies Abell 399 and Abell 401. Abell 399 ($z$=0.0724) and Abell 401 ($z$=0.0737) are expected to be in the initial phase of a cluster merger. In the region between the two clusters, we find a clear enhancement in the temperature of the filament plasma from 4 keV (expected value from a typical cluster temperature profile) to $kT\sim$6.5 keV. Our analysis also shows that filament plasma is present out to a radial distance of 15' (1.3 Mpc) from a line connecting the two …
Using Suzaku data, we had found a $3.4σ$ evidence for the X-ray emitting warm-hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the L$^\star$ galaxy NGC 3221. Here we present XMM-Newton data and outline an efficient, rigorous and well-defined method to extract the faint CGM signal. We confirm the CGM detection at $4σ$ significance within 30-200 kpc of the galaxy. We claim with $99.62\%$ confidence that the CGM is extended beyond $150$ kpc. The average temperature of the CGM is 2.0$^{+0.2}_{-0.3} \times 10^6$ K, but it is not isothermal. We find suggestive evidence for a declining temperature gradient out to …
Context. The Crab nebula has been used as a celestial calibration source of the X-ray flux and spectral shape for many years by X-ray astronomy missions. However, the object is often too bright for current and future missions equipped with instruments with improved sensitivity. Aims. We use G21.5-0.9 as a viable, fainter substitute to the Crab, which is another pulsar-wind nebula with a time-constant powerlaw spectrum with a flux of a few milli Crab in the X-ray band. Using this source, we conduct a cross-calibration study of the instruments onboard currently active observatories: Chandra ACIS…
We present new XMM-Newton observations of the northwest (NW) radio relic region in the cluster Abell 3667. We detect a jump in the X-ray surface brightness and X-ray temperature at the sharp outer edge of the radio relic which indicate that this is the location of a merger shock with a Mach number of about 2. Comparing the radio emission to the shock properties implies that approximately 0.2% of the dissipated shock kinetic energy goes into accelerating relativistic electrons. This is an order of magnitude smaller than the efficiency of shock acceleration in many Galactic supernova remnants, w…
Radio relics are Mpc-scale diffuse radio sources at the peripheries of galaxy clusters which are thought to trace outgoing merger shocks. We present XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 (z=0.306), which reveal the presence of a shock front 1.5 Mpc East of the cluster core. The surface-brightness jump coincides with the position of a known radio relic. Although the surface-brightness jump indicates a weak shock with a Mach number $\mathcal{M}=1.7_{-0.3}^{+0.5}$, the plasma in the post-shock region has been heated to a very high temperature ($\sim13$ keV) by the pa…
Results from the Suzaku X-ray broad-band observations of clusters of galaxies are summarized. Aiming at understanding the physics of gas heating/particle acceleration and the cluster dynamical evolution, we search for non-thermal hard X-ray emission from merging clusters, particularly A2163 and the Bullet Cluster, based on the Suzaku and XMM-Newton/Chandra joint analyses. The observed hard X-ray emission is well represented by single- or multi-temperature thermal models, including super-hot (kT~20 keV) gas. However, no significant non-thermal hard X-ray emission has been detected. Together wit…
Detecting and modelling the reprocessed hard X-ray emission component in the accretion flow, so-called reflection spectrum is a main tool to estimate black hole spins in a wide range of astrophysical black holes regardless of their mass or distance. In this work, we studied the X-ray spectra of the Seyfert I galaxy III Zw 2 using multi-epoch XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Suzaku observations. The X-ray spectra exhibit a soft-excess below 1 keV and a prominent excess at the location of the broad Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV. To account for these spectral features, we have fitted the spectra with multiple mode…
We report on X-ray observations of the radio-intermediate, X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, III Zw 2, obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and Swift over the past 17-years. The source brightness varies significantly over yearly time scales, but more modestly over periods of days. Pointed observations with XMM-Newton in 2000 and Suzaku in 2011 show spectral differences despite comparable X-ray fluxes. The Suzaku spectra are consistent with a power law continuum and a narrow Gaussian emission feature at ~6.4 keV, whereas the earlier XMM-Newton spectrum requires a broader Gaussian profile and soft-exc…
We desire a simple comparison of the absolute effective areas of the current generation of CCD instruments onboard the following observatories: Chandra ACIS-S3, XMM-Newton (EPIC-MOS and EPIC-pn), Suzaku XIS, and Swift XRT and a straightforward comparison of the time-dependent response of these instruments across their respective mission lifetimes. We have been using 1E 0102.2-7219, the brightest supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud, to evaluate and modify the response models of these instruments. 1E 0102.2-7219 has strong lines of O, Ne, and Mg below 1.5 keV and little or no Fe emis…
GRS 1747$-$312 is a neutron star Low-Mass X-ray Binary in the globular cluster Terzan 6, located at a distance of 9.5 kpc from the Earth. During its outbursts, periodic eclipses were known to occur. Observations for the outbursts were performed with Chandra in 2004 and Swift in 2013. XMM-Newton observed its quiescent state in 2004. In addition, when Suzaku observed it in 2009 as a part of Galactic center mapping observations, GRS 1747$-$312 was found to be in a low luminosity state with $L_{\rm x} \sim 1.2 \times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$. All of the observations except for XMM-Newton included the…
We present the results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation (200 ks) of the galaxy cluster Abell 523 at $z=0.104$. The peculiar morphology of the cluster radio halo and its outlier position in the radio power P(1.4 GHz) - X-ray luminosity plane make it an ideal candidate for the study of radio-X-ray correlations and for the search of inverse Compton (IC) emission. We constructed thermodynamic maps derived from the XMM observations to describe in detail the physical and dynamical state of the ICM. We performed a point-to-point comparison in terms of surface brightness between the X-ray …
We present the results of deep Chandra, XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 85, which is currently undergoing at least two mergers, and in addition shows evidence for gas sloshing which extends out to r ~ 600 kpc. One of the two infalling subclusters, to the south of the main cluster center, has a dense, X-ray bright cool core and a tail extending to the southeast. The northern edge of this tail is strikingly smooth and sharp (narrower than the Coulomb mean free path of the ambient gas) over a length of 200 kpc, while toward the southwest the boundary of the t…
We present the results from deep Suzaku observations of the central region of the Perseus cluster. Bulbul et al. (2014) reported the detection by XMM-Newton instruments of an unidentified X-ray emission line at an energy around 3.5keV in spectra for the Perseus and other clusters. They argued for a possibility of the decay of sterile neutrino, a dark matter candidate. We examine Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) spectra of the Perseus cluster for evidence in the 3.5keV line and other possible dark matter features in the 2-6keV energy band. In order to search for and constrain a weak line…
The spatial distribution of the metals residing in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters records all the information on a cluster's nucleosynthesis and chemical enrichment history. We present measurements from a total of 1.2 Ms Suzaku XIS and 72 ks Chandra observations of the cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 3112 out its virial radius (~ 1470 kpc). We find that the ratio of the observed supernova type Ia explosions to the total supernova explosions has a uniform distribution at a level of 12-16% out to the cluster's virial radius. The observed fraction of type Ia supernova explosions…
