This paper provides a report on our solution including model selection, tuning strategy and results obtained for Global Road Damage Detection Challenge. This Big Data Cup Challenge was held as a part of IEEE International Conference on Big Data 2020. We assess single and multi-stage network architectures for object detection and provide a benchmark using popular state-of-the-art open-source PyTorch frameworks like Detectron2 and Yolov5. Data preparation for provided Road Damage training dataset, captured using smartphone camera from Czech, India and Japan is discussed. We studied the effect of training on a per country basis with respect to a single generalizable model. We briefly describe the tuning strategy for the experiments conducted on two-stage Faster R-CNN with Deep Residual Network (Resnet) and Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) backbone. Additionally, we compare this to a one-stage Yolov5 model with Cross Stage Partial Network (CSPNet) backbone. We show a mean F1 score of 0.542 on Test2 and 0.536 on Test1 datasets using a multi-stage Faster R-CNN model, with Resnet-50 and Resnet-101 backbones respectively. This shows the generalizability of the Resnet-50 model when compared to its more complex counterparts. Experiments were conducted using Google Colab having K80 and a Linux PC with 1080Ti, NVIDIA consumer grade GPU. A PyTorch based Detectron2 code to preprocess, train, test and submit the Avg F1 score to is made available at https://github.com/vishwakarmarhl/rdd2020

Research on damage detection of road surfaces has been an active area of re-search, but most studies have focused so far on the detection of the presence of damages. However, in real-world scenarios, road managers need to clearly understand the type of damage and its extent in order to take effective action in advance or to allocate the necessary resources. Moreover, currently there are few uniform and openly available road damage datasets, leading to a lack of a common benchmark for road damage detection. Such dataset could be used in a great variety of applications; herein, it is intended to…

Classifying and counting vehicles in road traffic has numerous applications in the transportation engineering domain. However, the wide variety of vehicles (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses, trucks etc.) plying on roads of developing regions without any lane discipline, makes vehicle classification and counting a hard problem to automate. In this paper, we use state of the art Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based object detection models and train them for multiple vehicle classes using data from Delhi roads. We get upto 75% MAP on an 80-20 train-test split using 5562 video frames …

Timely disaster risk management requires accurate road maps and prompt damage assessment. Currently, this is done by volunteers manually marking satellite imagery of affected areas but this process is slow and often error-prone. Segmentation algorithms can be applied to satellite images to detect road networks. However, existing methods are unsuitable for disaster-struck areas as they make assumptions about the road network topology which may no longer be valid in these scenarios. Herein, we propose a CNN-based framework for identifying accessible roads in post-disaster imagery by detecting ch…

However, limited work investigates the application of such methods either within the highly unstructured off-road environment or to RGBD input data. In this work, we take an existing CNN architecture designed to perform semantic segmentation of RGB images of urban road scenes, then adapt and retrain it to perform the same task with multichannel RGBD images obtained unde…
The ability to automatically detect other vehicles on the road is vital to the safety of partially-autonomous and fully-autonomous vehicles. Most of the high-accuracy techniques for this task are based on R-CNN or one of its faster variants. In the research community, much emphasis has been applied to using 3D vision or complex R-CNN variants to achieve higher accuracy. However, are there more straightforward modifications that could deliver higher accuracy? Yes. We show that increasing input image resolution (i.e. upsampling) offers up to 12 percentage-points higher accuracy compared to an of…

Existing road pothole detection approaches can be classified as computer vision-based or machine learning-based. The former approaches typically employ 2-D image analysis/understanding or 3-D point cloud modeling and segmentation algorithms to detect road potholes from vision sensor data. The latter approaches generally address road pothole detection using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in an end-to-end manner. However, road potholes are not necessarily ubiquitous and it is challenging to prepare a large well-annotated dataset for CNN training. In this regard, while computer vision-based…

Existing state-of-the-art techniques in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for object detection and segmentation help automate a huge chunk of this task given adequate annotated data. However, annotating videos from scratch is cost-prohibitive. For instance, it can take an annotator several days to annotate a 5-minute video recorded at 30 FPS. Hence, we propose an automated labelling pipeline by leveraging techniques like few-shot learning and out-of-distribution detect…

Road damage is an inconvenience and a safety hazard, severely affecting vehicle condition, driving comfort, and traffic safety. The traditional manual visual road inspection process is pricey, dangerous, exhausting, and cumbersome. Also, manual road inspection results are qualitative and subjective, as they depend entirely on the inspector's personal experience. Therefore, there is an ever-increasing need for automated road inspection systems. This chapter first compares the five most common road damage types. Then, 2-D/3-D road imaging systems are discussed. Finally, state-of-the-art machine …

The transformed disparity map is then segmented using Otus's thresholding method, and the damaged road areas can be extracted. The proposed algorithm requires no parameters when detecting road damage. The ex…

Mapping road networks is currently both expensive and labor-intensive. High-resolution aerial imagery provides a promising avenue to automatically infer a road network. Prior work uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detect which pixels belong to a road (segmentation), and then uses complex post-processing heuristics to infer graph connectivity. We show that these segmentation methods have high error rates because noisy CNN outputs are difficult to correct. We propose RoadTracer, a new method to automatically construct accurate road network maps from aerial images. RoadTracer uses an i…
