Let $K_n$ denote the number of distinct values among the first $n$ terms of an infinite exchangeable sequence of random variables $(X_1,X_2,\ldots)$. We prove for $n=3$ that the extreme points of the convex set of all possible laws of $K_3$ are those derived from i.i.d. sampling from discrete uniform distributions and the limit case with $P(K_3=3)=1$, and offer a conjecture for larger $n$. We also consider variants of the problem for finite exchangeable sequences and exchangeable random partitions.
We present results concerning when the joint distribution of an exchangeable sequence is determined by the marginal distributions of its partial sums. The question of whether or not this determination occurs was posed by David Aldous. We then consider related uniqueness problems, including a continuous time analog to the Aldous problem and a randomized univariate moment problem.
Partially exchangeable sequences representable as mixtures of Markov chains are completely specified by de Finetti's mixing measure. The paper characterizes, in terms of a subclass of hidden Markov models, the partially exchangeable sequences with mixing measure concentrated on a countable set, both for discrete valued and for Polish valued sequences.

A central limit theorem for arrays of symmetric row-wise exchangeable random variables is presented. The result is valid for finite and infinite extendable and non-extendable sequences. Unlike most reported versions of the central limit theorem valid only for partial sums of finite non-extendable sequences, ours applies to the entire sum and mimics the classical theorem in this sense.
We establish a one-to-one correspondence between (i) exchangeable sequences of random variables whose finite-dimensional distributions are minimum (or maximum) infinitely divisible and (ii) non-negative, non-decreasing, infinitely divisible stochastic processes. The exponent measure of an exchangeable minimum infinitely divisible sequence is shown to be the sum of a very simple ``drift measure'' and a mixture of product probability measures, which uniquely corresponds to the Lévy measure of a non-negative and non-decreasing infinitely divisible process. The latter is shown to be supported on n…
An algorithm for the unbiased simulation of continuous max-(resp.\ min-)id stochastic processes is developed. The algorithm only requires the simulation of finite Poisson random measures on the space of continuous functions and avoids the necessity of computing conditional distributions of infinite (exponent)measures. The complexity of the algorithm is characterized in terms of the expected number of simulated atoms of the Poisson random measures on the space of continuous functions. Special emphasis is put on the simulation of exchangeable max-(or min-)id sequences, in particular exchangeable…
Consider a (possibly infinite) exchangeable sequence X={X_n:1\leqn<N}, where N\in N\cup {\infty}, with values in a Borel space (A,A), and note X_n=(X_1,...,X_n). We say that X is Hoeffding decomposable if, for each n, every square integrable, centered and symmetric statistic based on X_n can be written as an orthogonal sum of n U-statistics with degenerated and symmetric kernels of increasing order. The only two examples of Hoeffding decomposable sequences studied in the literature are i.i.d. random variables and extractions without replacement from a finite population. In the first part of th…
In [Fortini et al., Stoch. Proc. Appl. 100 (2002), 147--165] it is demonstrated that a recurrent Markov exchangeable process in the sense of Diaconis and Freedman is essentially a partially exchangeable process in the sense of de Finetti. In case of finite sequences there is not such an equivalence. We analyze both finite partially exchangeable and finite Markov exchangeable binary sequences and formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for extendibility in both cases.
Let $S$ be a Polish space and $(X_n:n\geq1)$ an exchangeable sequence of $S$-valued random variables. Let $α_n(\cdot)=P(X_{n+1}\in \cdot\mid X_1,\...,X_n)$ be the predictive measure and $α$ a random probability measure on $S$ such that $α_n\stackrel{\mathrm{weak}}{\longrightarrow}α$ a.s. Two (related) problems are addressed. One is to give conditions for $α\llλ$ a.s., where $λ$ is a (nonrandom) $σ$-finite Borel measure on $S$. Such conditions should concern the finite dimensional distributions $\mathcal {L}(X_1,\...,X_n)$, $n\geq1$, only. The other problem is to investigate whether $\Vert\alp …

We develop constructions for exchangeable sequences of point processes that are rendered conditionally-i.i.d. negative binomial processes by a (possibly unknown) random measure called the base measure. Negative binomial processes are useful in Bayesian nonparametrics as models for random multisets, and in applications we are often interested in cases when the base measure itself is difficult to construct (for example when it has countably infinite support). While a finitary construction for an important case (corresponding to a beta process base measure) has appeared in the literature, our con…
A sequence of random variables is called exchangeable if the joint distribution of the sequence is unchanged by any permutation of the indices. De Finetti's theorem characterizes all $\{0,1\}$-valued exchangeable sequences as a "mixture" of sequences of independent random variables. We present an new, elementary proof of de Finetti's Theorem. The purpose of this paper is to make this theorem accessible to a broader community through an essentially self-contained proof.
We study Hoeffding decomposable exchangeable sequences with values in a finite set D. We provide a new combinatorial characterization of Hoeffding decomposability and use this result to show that, if the cardinality of D is strictly greater than 2, then there exists a class of neither Pólya nor i.i.d. D-valued exchangeable sequences that are Hoeffding decomposable. The construction of such sequences is based on some ideas appearing in Hill, Lane and Sudderth [1987] and answers a question left open in El-Dakkak and Peccati [2008].
A length-$n$ random sequence $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ in a space $S$ is finitely exchangeable if its distribution is invariant under all $n!$ permutations of coordinates. Given $N > n$, we study the extendibility problem: when is it the case that there is a length-$N$ exchangeable random sequence $Y_1,\ldots, Y_N$ so that $(Y_1,\ldots,Y_n)$ has the same distribution as $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$? In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition so that, for given $n$ and $N$, the extendibility problem admits a solution. This is done by employing functional-analytic and measure-theoretic arguments t…
In this article we demonstrate the relationship between finitely exchangeable arrays and finitely exchangeable sequences. We then derive sharp bounds on the total variation distance between distributions of finitely and infinitely exchangeable arrays.
We prove a long-standing conjecture which characterises the Ewens-Pitman two-parameter family of exchangeable random partitions, plus a short list of limit and exceptional cases, by the following property: for each $n = 2,3, >...$, if one of $n$ individuals is chosen uniformly at random, independently of the random partition $π_n$ of these individuals into various types, and all individuals of the same type as the chosen individual are deleted, then for each $r > 0$, given that $r$ individuals remain, these individuals are partitioned according to $π_r'$ for some sequence of random partitions …
We extend de Finetti's (1937) notion of exchangeability to finite and countable sequences of variables, when a subject's beliefs about them are modelled using coherent lower previsions rather than (linear) previsions. We prove representation theorems in both the finite and the countable case, in terms of sampling without and with replacement, respectively. We also establish a convergence result for sample means of exchangeable sequences. Finally, we study and solve the problem of exchangeable natural extension: how to find the most conservative (point-wise smallest) coherent and exchangeable l…
We survey known solutions to the infinite extendibility problem for (necessarily exchangeable) probability laws on $\mathbb{R}^d$, which is: Can a given random vector $\vec{X} = (X_1,\ldots,X_d)$ be represented in distribution as the first $d$ members of an infinite exchangeable sequence of random variables? This is the case if and only if $\vec{X}$ has a stochastic representation that is "conditionally iid" according to the seminal de Finetti's Theorem. Of particular interest are cases in which the original motivation behind the model $\vec{X}$ is not one of conditional independence. After an…
We consider ensembles of real symmetric band matrices with entries drawn from an infinite sequence of exchangeable random variables, as far as the symmetry of the matrices permits. In general the entries of the upper triangular parts of these matrices are correlated and no smallness or sparseness of these correlations is assumed. It is shown that the eigenvalue distribution measures still converge to a semicircle but with random scaling. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding $\ell_2$-operator norms. The key to our analysis is a generalisation of a classic result by d…
We define new norms for symmetric tensors over ordered normed spaces; these norms are defined by considering linear combinations of tensor products or powers of positive elements only. Relations between the different norms are studied. The results are applied to the problem of representing a finitely exchangeable distribution as a mixture of powers, i.e, mixture of distributions of i.i.d. sequences, using a signed mixing measure.
Let $K_n$ denote the number of types of a sample of size $n$ taken from an exchangeable coalescent process ($Ξ$-coalescent) with mutation. A distributional recursion for the sequence $(K_n)_{n\in{\mathbb N}}$ is derived. If the coalescent does not have proper frequencies, i.e., if the characterizing measure $Ξ$ on the infinite simplex $Δ$ does not have mass at zero and satisfies $\int_Δ|x|Ξ(dx)/(x,x)<\infty$, where $|x|:=\sum_{i=1}^\infty x_i$ and $(x,x):=\sum_{i=1}^\infty x_i^2$ for $x=(x_1,x_2,...)\inΔ$, then $K_n/n$ converges weakly as $n\to\infty$ to a limiting variable $K$ which is charac…
The theory of limits of dense graph sequences was initiated by Lovasz and Szegedy. We give a possible generalization of this theory to multigraphs. Our proofs are based on the correspondence between dense graph limits and countable, exchangeable arrays of random variables observed by Diaconis and Janson. The main ingredient in the construction of the limit object is Aldous' representation theorem for exchangeable arrays.
We present a novel analogue for finite exchangeable sequences of the de Finetti, Hewitt and Savage theorem and investigate its implications for multi-marginal optimal transport (MMOT) and Bayesian statistics. If $(Z_1,...,Z_N)$ is a finitely exchangeable sequence of $N$ random variables taking values in some Polish space $X$, we show that the law $μ_k$ of the first $k$ components has a representation of the form $μ_k=\int_{{\mathcal P}_{\frac{1}{N}}(X)} F_{N,k}(λ) \, \mbox{d} α(λ)$ for some probability measure $α$ on the set of $1/N$-quantized probability measures on $X$ and certain universal …
Mixtures of product distributions are a powerful device for learning about heterogeneity within data populations. In this class of latent structure models, de Finetti's mixing measure plays the central role for describing the uncertainty about the latent parameters representing heterogeneity. In this paper posterior contraction theorems for de Finetti's mixing measure arising from finite mixtures of product distributions will be established, under the setting the number of exchangeable sequences of observed variables increases while sequence length(s) may be either fixed or varied. The role of…
In this note, we show that the norm of an $n\times n$ random jointly exchangeable matrix with zero diagonal can be estimated in terms of the norm of its $n/2\times n/2$ submatrix located in the top right corner. As a consequence, we prove a relation between the second largest singular values of a random matrix with constant row and column sums and its top right $n/2\times n/2$ submatrix. The result has an application to estimating the spectral gap of random undirected $d$-regular graphs in terms of the second singular value of {\it directed} random graphs with predefined degree sequences.

Two stochastic representations of multivariate geometric distributions are analyzed, both are obtained by lifting the lack-of-memory (LM) property of the univariate geometric law to the multivariate case. On the one hand, the narrow-sense multivariate geometric law can be considered a discrete equivalent of the well-studied Marshall-Olkin exponential law. On the other hand, the more general wide-sense geometric law is shown to be characterized by the LM property and can differ significantly from its continuous counterpart, e.g., by allowing for negative pairwise correlations. For both families…
Let X be a non-deterministic infinite exchangeable sequence with values in {0,1}. We show that X is Hoeffding-decomposable if, and only if, X is either an i.i.d. sequence or a Polya sequence. This completes the results established in Peccati [2004]. The proof uses several combinatorial implications of the correspondence between Hoeffding decomposability and weak independence. Our results must be compared with previous characterizations of i.i.d. and Polya sequences given by Hill et al. [1987] and Diaconis and Yilvisaker [1979].
We extend de Finetti's [Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré 7 (1937) 1--68] notion of exchangeability to finite and countable sequences of variables, when a subject's beliefs about them are modelled using coherent lower previsions rather than (linear) previsions. We derive representation theorems in both the finite and countable cases, in terms of sampling without and with replacement, respectively.
Given a partition $\{I_1,\ldots,I_k\}$ of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, let $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ be random vector with each $X_i$ taking values in an arbitrary measurable space $(S,\mathscr{S})$ such that their joint law is invariant under finite permutations of the indexes within each class $I_j$. Then, it is shown that this law has to be a signed mixture of independent laws and identically distributed within each class $I_j$. The representation is unique if and only if the set of these signed measures is weakly compact. We provide a necessary condition for the existence of a nonnegative directing measure.…
A new type of stochastic dependence for a sequence of random variables is introduced and studied. Precisely, (X_n)_{n\geq 1} is said to be conditionally identically distributed (c.i.d.), with respect to a filtration (G_n)_{n\geq 0}, if it is adapted to (G_n)_{n\geq 0} and, for each n\geq 0, (X_k)_{k>n} is identically distributed given the past G_n. In case G_0={\varnothing,Ω} and G_n=σ(X_1,...,X_n), a result of Kallenberg implies that (X_n)_{n\geq 1} is exchangeable if and only if it is stationary and c.i.d. After giving some natural examples of nonexchangeable c.i.d. sequences, it is shown th…
In this work we analyze the concept of swap-invariance, which is a weaker variant of exchangeability. A random vector $ξ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is called swap-invariant if $\,{\mathbf E}\,\big| \!\sum_j u_j ξ_j \big|\,$ is invariant under all permutations of $(ξ_1, \ldots, ξ_n)$ for each $u \in \mathbb{R}^n$. We extend this notion to random measures. For a swap-invariant random measure $ξ$ on a measure space $(S,\mathcal{S},μ)$ the vector $(ξ(A_1), \ldots, ξ(A_n))$ is swap-invariant for all disjoint $A_j \in \mathcal{S}$ with equal $μ$-measure. Various characterizations of swap-invariant random me…
A consequence of de Finetti's representation theorem is that for every infinite sequence of exchangeable 0-1 random variables $(X_k)_{k\geq1}$, there exists a probability measure $μ$ on the Borel sets of $[0,1]$ such that $\bar X_n = n^{-1} \sum_{i=1}^n X_i$ converges weakly to $μ$. For a wide class of probability measures $μ$ having smooth density on $(0,1)$, we give bounds of order $1/n$ with explicit constants for the Wasserstein distance between the law of $\bar X_n$ and $μ$. This extends a recent result {by} Goldstein and Reinert \cite{goldstein2013stein} regarding the distance between th…
De Finetti's classical result of [18] identifying the law of an exchangeable family of random variables as a mixture of i.i.d. laws was extended to structure theorems for more complex notions of exchangeability by Aldous [1,2,3], Hoover [41,42], Kallenberg [44] and Kingman [47]. On the other hand, such exchangeable laws were first related to questions from combinatorics in an independent analysis by Fremlin and Talagrand [29], and again more recently in Tao [62], where they appear as a natural proxy for the `leading order statistics' of colourings of large graphs or hypergraphs. Moreover, this…
It is well-known that, on a purely algebraic level, a simplified algebraic version of the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) can be proved in the framework of a noncommutative probability space, under the hypotheses that the sequence of non-commutative random variables we consider is exchangeable and obeys a certain vanishing condition of some of its joint moments. In this approach (which covers versions for both the classical CLT and the CLT of free probability), the determination of the resulting limit law has to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. In this paper we discuss an instance of the abov…
It is well known that the isotonic least squares estimator is characterized as the derivative of the greatest convex minorant of a random walk. Provided the walk has exchangeable increments, we prove that the slopes of the greatest convex minorant are distributed as order statistics of the running averages. This result implies an exact non-asymptotic formula for the squared error risk of least squares in isotonic regression when the true sequence is constant that holds for every exchangeable error distribution.
A classic and fundamental result about the decomposition of random sequences into a mixture of simpler ones is de Finetti's Theorem. In its original form it applies to infinite 0-1 valued exchangeable sequences. Later it was extended and generalized in numerous directions. After reviewing this line of development, we present our new decomposition theorem, covering cases that have not been previously considered. We also introduce a novel way of applying these types of results in the analysis of random networks. For self-containment, we provide the introductory exposition in more details than us…
Let $X=(X_1,X_2,\ldots)$ be a sequence of random variables with values in a standard space $(S,\mathcal{B})$. Suppose \begin{gather*} X_1\simν\quad\text{and}\quad P\bigl(X_{n+1}\in\cdot\mid X_1,\ldots,X_n\bigr)=\frac{θν(\cdot)+\sum_{i=1}^nK(X_i)(\cdot)}{n+θ}\quad\quad\text{a.s.} \end{gather*} where $θ>0$ is a constant, $ν$ a probability measure on $\mathcal{B}$, and $K$ a random probability measure on $\mathcal{B}$. Then, $X$ is exchangeable whenever $K$ is a regular conditional distribution for $ν$ given any sub-$σ$-field of $\mathcal{B}$. Under this assumption, $X$ enjoys all the main proper…
The configuration model is the most natural model to generate a random multigraph with a given degree sequence. We use the notion of dense graph limits to characterize the special form of limit objects of convergent sequences of configuration models. We apply these results to calculate the limit object corresponding to the dense preferential attachment graph and the edge reconnecting model. Our main tools in doing so are (1) the relation between the theory of graph limits and that of partially exchangeable random arrays (2) an explicit construction of our random graphs that uses urn models.
Sets of desirable gambles constitute a quite general type of uncertainty model with an interesting geometrical interpretation. We give a general discussion of such models and their rationality criteria. We study exchangeability assessments for them, and prove counterparts of de Finetti's finite and infinite representation theorems. We show that the finite representation in terms of count vectors has a very nice geometrical interpretation, and that the representation in terms of frequency vectors is tied up with multivariate Bernstein (basis) polynomials. We also lay bare the relationships betw…
