In this note, we show that the norm of an $n\times n$ random jointly exchangeable matrix with zero diagonal can be estimated in terms of the norm of its $n/2\times n/2$ submatrix located in the top right corner. As a consequence, we prove a relation between the second largest singular values of a random matrix with constant row and column sums and its top right $n/2\times n/2$ submatrix. The result has an application to estimating the spectral gap of random undirected $d$-regular graphs in terms of the second singular value of {\it directed} random graphs with predefined degree sequences.
Kallenberg (2005) provided a necessary and sufficient condition for the local finiteness of a jointly exchangeable random measure on $\R_+^2$. Here we note an additional condition that was missing in Kallenberg's theorem, but was implicitly used in the proof. We also provide a counter-example when the additional condition does not hold.
We derive in this short report the exponential as well as power decreasing tail estimations for the sums of centered exchangeable random variables, alike ones for the sums of the centered independent ones.
We define new norms for symmetric tensors over ordered normed spaces; these norms are defined by considering linear combinations of tensor products or powers of positive elements only. Relations between the different norms are studied. The results are applied to the problem of representing a finitely exchangeable distribution as a mixture of powers, i.e, mixture of distributions of i.i.d. sequences, using a signed mixing measure.
In a recent paper by the authors, a new approach--called the "embedding method"--was introduced, which allows to make use of exchangeable pairs for normal and multivariate normal approximation with Stein's method in cases where the corresponding couplings do not satisfy a certain linearity condition. The key idea is to embed the problem into a higher dimensional space in such a way that the linearity condition is then satisfied. Here we apply the embedding to U-statistics as well as to subgraph counts in random graphs.
The problem of convergence in law of normed sums of exchangeable random variables is examined. First, the problem is studied w.r.t. arrays of exchangeable random variables, and the special role played by mixtures of products of stable laws - as limits in law of normed sums in different rows of the array - is emphasized. Necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence to a specific form in the above class of measures are then given. Moreover, sufficient conditions for convergence of sums in a single row are proved. Finally, a potentially useful variant of the formulation of the results just…
We consider a random bistochastic matrix of size $n$ of the form $M Q$ where $M$ is a uniformly distributed permutation matrix and $Q$ is a given bistochastic matrix. Under mild sparsity and regularity assumptions on $Q$, we prove that the second largest eigenvalue of $MQ$ is essentially bounded by the normalized Hilbert-Schmidt norm of $Q$ when $n$ grows large. We apply this result to random walks on random regular digraphs and to shuffle-and-fold maps of the unit interval popularized in fluid mixing protocols.
For two collections of nonnegative and suitably normalised weights $\W=(\W_j)$ and $\V=(\V_{n,k})$, a probability distribution on the set of partitions of the set $\{1,...,n\}$ is defined by assigning to a generic partition $\{A_j, j\leq k\}$ the probability $\V_{n,k} \W_{|A_1|}... \W_{|A_k|}$, where $|A_j|$ is the number of elements of $A_j$. We impose constraints on the weights by assuming that the resulting random partitions $Π_n$ of $[n]$ are consistent as $n$ varies, meaning that they define an exchangeable partition of the set of all natural numbers. This implies that the weights $\W$ mu…
We consider ensembles of real symmetric band matrices with entries drawn from an infinite sequence of exchangeable random variables, as far as the symmetry of the matrices permits. In general the entries of the upper triangular parts of these matrices are correlated and no smallness or sparseness of these correlations is assumed. It is shown that the eigenvalue distribution measures still converge to a semicircle but with random scaling. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding $\ell_2$-operator norms. The key to our analysis is a generalisation of a classic result by d…
This paper derives exponential concentration inequalities and polynomial moment inequalities for the spectral norm of a random matrix. The analysis requires a matrix extension of the scalar concentration theory developed by Sourav Chatterjee using Stein's method of exchangeable pairs. When applied to a sum of independent random matrices, this approach yields matrix generalizations of the classical inequalities due to Hoeffding, Bernstein, Khintchine and Rosenthal. The same technique delivers bounds for sums of dependent random matrices and more general matrix-valued functions of dependent rand…
We survey known solutions to the infinite extendibility problem for (necessarily exchangeable) probability laws on $\mathbb{R}^d$, which is: Can a given random vector $\vec{X} = (X_1,\ldots,X_d)$ be represented in distribution as the first $d$ members of an infinite exchangeable sequence of random variables? This is the case if and only if $\vec{X}$ has a stochastic representation that is "conditionally iid" according to the seminal de Finetti's Theorem. Of particular interest are cases in which the original motivation behind the model $\vec{X}$ is not one of conditional independence. After an…
Let $S$ be a Polish space and $(X_n:n\geq1)$ an exchangeable sequence of $S$-valued random variables. Let $α_n(\cdot)=P(X_{n+1}\in \cdot\mid X_1,\...,X_n)$ be the predictive measure and $α$ a random probability measure on $S$ such that $α_n\stackrel{\mathrm{weak}}{\longrightarrow}α$ a.s. Two (related) problems are addressed. One is to give conditions for $α\llλ$ a.s., where $λ$ is a (nonrandom) $σ$-finite Borel measure on $S$. Such conditions should concern the finite dimensional distributions $\mathcal {L}(X_1,\...,X_n)$, $n\geq1$, only. The other problem is to investigate whether $\Vert\alp …
We study random families of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ that are similar to exchangeable random partitions, but do not require constituent sets to be disjoint: Each element of ${\mathbb{N}}$ may be contained in multiple subsets. One class of such objects, known as Indian buffet processes, has become a popular tool in machine learning. Based on an equivalence between Indian buffet and scale-invariant Poisson processes, we identify a random scaling variable whose role is similar to that played in exchangeable partition models by the total mass of a random measure. Analogous to the construction of ex…
We consider a natural destruction process of an infinite recursive tree by removing each edge after an independent exponential time. The destruction up to time t is encoded by a partition $Π$(t) of N into blocks of connected vertices. Despite the lack of exchangeability, just like for an exchangeable fragmentation process, the process $Π$ is Markovian with transitions determined by a splitting rates measure r. However, somewhat surprisingly, r fails to fulfill the usual integrability condition for the dislocation measure of exchangeable fragmentations. We further observe that a time-dependent …
Let $M$ be a random matrix in the orthogonal group $Ø_n$, distributed according to Haar measure, and let $A$ be a fixed $n\times n$ matrix over $\R$ such that $\tr(AA^t)=n$. Then the total variation distance of the random variable $\tr(AM)$ to standard normal is bounded by $2\sqrt{3}/(n-1)$, and this rate is sharp up to the constant. Analogous results are obtained for $M$ a random unitary matrix and $A$ a fixed $n\times n$ matrix over $\C$. The proofs are applications of a new abstract normal approximation theorem which extends Stein's method of exchangeable pairs to situations in which contin…
This paper derives exponential tail bounds and polynomial moment inequalities for the spectral norm deviation of a random matrix from its mean value. The argument depends on a matrix extension of Stein's method of exchangeable pairs for concentration of measure, as introduced by Chatterjee. Recent work of Mackey et al. uses these techniques to analyze random matrices with additive structure, while the enhancements in this paper cover a wider class of matrix-valued random elements. In particular, these ideas lead to a bounded differences inequality that applies to random matrices constructed fr…
We give a non-asymptotic bound on the spectral norm of a $d\times d$ matrix $X$ with centered jointly Gaussian entries in terms of the covariance matrix of the entries. In some cases, this estimate is sharp and removes the $\sqrt{\log d}$ factor in the noncommutative Khintchine inequality.
We prove that the bulk eigenvectors of sparse random matrices, i.e. the adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi graphs or random regular graphs, are asymptotically jointly normal, provided the averaged degree increases with the size of the graphs. Our methodology follows [6] by analyzing the eigenvector flow under Dyson Brownian motion, combining with an isotropic local law for Green's function. As an auxiliary result, we prove that for the eigenvector flow of Dyson Brownian motion with general initial data, the eigenvectors are asymptotically jointly normal in the direction $q$ after time $η_*\ll t…
This is an elementary review, aimed at non-specialists, of results that have been obtained for the limiting distribution of eigenvalues and for the operator norms of real symmetric random matrices via the method of moments. This method goes back to a remarkable argument of Eugen Wigner some sixty years ago which works best for independent matrix entries, as far as symmetry permits, that are all centered and have the same variance. We then discuss variations of this classical result for ensembles for which the variance may depend on the distance of the matrix entry to the diagonal, including in…
We study the spectral norm of N-dimensional hermitian random matrices whose entries are zero outside of the band of the width b along the principal diagonal. Inside this band the elements are given by gaussian centered jointly independent random variables with the variance of the order 1/b. We show that if b tends to infinity faster than the third power of log N, then the spectral norm is bounded with probability 1.
Let $\mathbb{X}=\{X_{ij}: 1\le i,j\le n\}$ be an $n\times n$ array of independent random variables where $n\ge2$. Let $π$ be a uniform random permutation of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, independent of $\mathbb{X}$, and let $W=\sum_{i=1}^nX_{iπ(i)}$. Suppose $\mathbb{X}$ is standardized so that ${\mathbb{E}}W=0,\operatorname {Var}(W)=1$. We prove that the Kolmogorov distance between the distribution of $W$ and the standard normal distribution is bounded by $451\sum_{i,j=1}^n{\mathbb{E}}|X_{ij}|^3/n$. Our approach is by Stein's method of exchangeable pairs and the use of a concentration inequality.
