We use covariant phase space methods to study the metric and tetrad formulations of General Relativity in a manifold with boundary and compare the results obtained in both approaches. Proving their equivalence has been a long-lasting problem that we solve here by using the cohomological approach provided by the relative bicomplex framework. This setting provides a clean and ambiguity-free way to describe the solution spaces and associated symplectic structures. We also compute several relevant charges in both schemes and show that they are equivalent, as expected.
We show that the well-known problem of frame dependence and violation of local Lorentz invariance in the usual formulation of $f(T)$ gravity is a consequence of neglecting the role of spin connection. We re-formulate $f(T)$ gravity starting, instead of the "pure-tetrad" teleparallel gravity, from the covariant teleparallel gravity, using both the tetrad and the spin connection as dynamical variables, resulting in the fully covariant, consistent, and frame-independent, version of $f(T)$ gravity, which does not suffer from the notorious problems of the usual, pure-tetrad, $f(T)$ theory. We prese…
The metric-affine Lagrangian of Ponomarev and Obukhov for the unified gravitational and electromagnetic field is linear in the Ricci scalar and quadratic in the tensor of homothetic curvature. We apply to this Lagrangian the variational principle with the tetrad and spin connection as dynamical variables and show that, in this approach, the field equations are the Einstein-Maxwell equations if we relate the electromagnetic potential to the trace of the spin connection. We also show that, as in the Ponomarev-Obukhov formulation, the generally covariant Dirac Lagrangian gives rise to the standar…
We consider a generalized teleparallel theory of gravitation, where the action contains an arbitrary function of the torsion scalar and a scalar field, $f(T,ϕ)$, thus encompassing the cases of $f(T)$ gravity and nonminimally coupled scalar field as subclasses. The action is manifestly Lorentz invariant when besides the tetrad one allows for flat but nontrivial spin connection. We derive the field equations and demonstrate how the antisymmetric part of the tetrad equations is automatically satisfied when the spin connection equation holds. The spin connection equation is a vital part of the cov…
This thesis investigates how the metric and tetrad formulations of three gravitational field theories in manifolds with timelike boundaries within the covariant phase space program. With the recently developed relative bicomplex framework, we explore the space of solutions and presymplectic structures associated with each action principle and analyse their equivalence. In this way, the relative bicomplex surpasses traditional covariant phase space methods, which are only suited for boundary-free field theories.
We perform the complete canonical analysis of the tetrad formulation of bimetric gravity and confirm that it is ghost-free describing the seven degrees of freedom of a massless and a massive gravitons. In particular, we find explicit expressions for secondary constraints, one of which is responsible for removing the ghost, whereas the other ensures the equivalence with the metric formulation. Both of them have a remarkably simple form and, being combined with conditions on Lagrange multipliers, can be written in a covariant way.
Although the standard generally-covariant Dirac equation is unique in a topologically simple spacetime, it has been shown that it leads to non-uniqueness problems for the Hamiltonian and energy operators, including the non-uniqueness of the energy spectrum. These problems should be solved by restricting the choice of the Dirac gamma field in a consistent way. Recently, we proposed to impose the value of the rotation rate of the tetrad field. This is not necessarily easy to implement and works only in a given reference frame. Here, we propose that the gamma field should change only by constant …
We consider the variational principle in the covariant formulation of modified teleparallel theories with second order field equations. We vary the action with respect to the spin connection and obtain a consistency condition relating the spin connection with the tetrad. We argue that since the spin connection can be calculated using an additional reference tetrad, modified teleparallel theories can be interpreted as effectively bigravity theories. We conclude with discussion about the relation of our results and those obtained in the usual, non-covariant, formulation of teleparallel theories …
After a review of the canonical reduction to the rest-frame Wigner-covariant instant form of standard theories in Minkowski spacetime, a new formulation of tetrad gravity is introduced. Its canonical reduction, also in presence of N scalar particles, is done. The modification of the ADM formulation to solve the deparametrization problem of general relativity (how to recover the rest-frame instant form for G=0), is presented.
Teleparallel gravity theories employ a tetrad and a Lorentz spin connection as independent variables in their covariant formulation. In order to solve their field equations, it is helpful to search for solutions which exhibit certain amounts of symmetry, such as spherical or cosmological symmetry. In this article we present how to apply the notion of spacetime symmetries known from Cartan geometry to teleparallel geometries. We explicitly derive the most general tetrads and spin connections which are compatible with axial, spherical, cosmological and maximal symmetry. For homogeneous and isotr…
A Hamiltonian approach to the equations of general relativity is proposed using the powerful mathematical language of multivector-valued differential forms. In the approach, the gravitational coordinates are the 12 spatial components of the line interval (the vierbein) including their antisymmetric parts, and their 12 conjugate momenta. A feature of the proposed formalism is that it allows Lorentz gauge freedoms to be imposed on the Lorentz connections rather than on the vierbein, which may facilitate numerical integration in some challenging problems. The 40 Hamilton's equations comprise 12 +…
In this article we explore local Lorentz transformations in theories of gravity based on the teleparallel formalism. For the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR), the spin connection plays no role in the equations of motion, and therefore it is possible to simply put it equal to zero with no change in physical quantities, and then the theory is formulated purely in terms of the tetrad field which can be freely chosen in any way. In nonlinear modifications of TEGR, this is a more intricate issue, and vanishing spin connection is then the Weitzenböck gauge choice which imposes re…
By attaching basis vectors to the components of matter fields, one may render free action densities fully covariant. Both the connection and the tetrads are quadratic forms in these basis vectors. The metric of spacetime, which is quadratic in the tetrads, is then quartic in the basis vectors.
Varying the gravitational Lagrangian produces a boundary contribution that has various physical applications. It determines the right boundary terms to be added to the action once boundary conditions are specified, and defines the symplectic structure of covariant phase space methods. We study general boundary variations using tetrads instead of the metric. This choice streamlines many calculations, especially in the case of null hypersurfaces with arbitrary coordinates, where we show that the spin-1 momentum coincides with the rotational 1-form of isolated horizons. The additional gauge symme…
Einstein's equations in a tetrad formulation are derived from a linear theory in flat spacetime with an asymmetric potential using free field gauge invariance, local Lorentz invariance and universal coupling. The gravitational potential can be either covariant or contravariant and of almost any density weight. These results are adapted to produce universally coupled massive variants of Einstein's equations, yielding two one-parameter families of distinct theories with spin 2 and spin 0. The theories derived, upon fixing the local Lorentz gauge freedom, are seen to be a subset of those found by…
We identify a symplectic potential for general relativity in tetrad and connection variables that is fully gauge-invariant, using the freedom to add surface terms. When torsion vanishes, it does not lead to surface charges associated with the internal Lorentz transformations, and reduces exactly to the symplectic potential given by the Einstein-Hilbert action. In particular, it reproduces the Komar form when the variation is a Lie derivative, and the geometric expression in terms of extrinsic curvature and 2d corner data for a general variation. The additional surface term vanishes at spatial …

It is a commonplace that any theory can be written in any coordinates via tensor calculus. But it is claimed that spinors as such cannot be represented in coordinates in a curved space-time. What general covariance means for theories with fermions is thus unclear. In fact both commonplaces are wrong. Though it is not widely known, Ogievetsky and Polubarinov (OP) constructed spinors in coordinates in 1965, helping to spawn nonlinear group representations. Locally, these spinors resemble the orthonormal basis or "tetrad" formalism in the symmetric gauge, but they are conceptually self-sufficient…
We study a generalization of the Holst action where we admit nonmetricity and torsion in manifolds with timelike boundaries (both in the metric and tetrad formalism). We prove that its space of solutions is equal to the one of the Palatini action. Therefore, we conclude that the metric sector is in fact identical to GR, which is defined by the Einstein-Hilbert action. We further prove that, despite defining the same space of solutions, the Palatini and (the generalized) Holst Lagrangians are not cohomologically equal. Thus, the presymplectic structure and charges provided by the Covariant Phas…
We present Hamilton's equations for the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR), which is a reformulation of general relativity based on a curvatureless, metric compatible, and torsionful connection. For this, we consider the Hamiltonian for TEGR obtained through the vector, antisymmetric, symmetric and trace-free, and trace irreducible decomposition of the phase space variables. We present the Hamiltonian for TEGR in the covariant formalism for the first time in the literature, by considering a spin connection depending on Lorentz matrices. We introduce the mathematical formalism…
This paper presents a "historical" formalism for dynamical systems, in its Hamiltonian version (Lagrangian version was presented in a previous paper). It is universal, in the sense that it applies equally well to time dynamics and to field theories on space-time. It is based on the notion of (Hamiltonian) histories, which are sections of the (extended) phase space bundle. It is developed in the space of sections, in contradistinction with the usual formalism which works in the bundle manifold. In field theories, the formalism remains covariant and does not require a spitting of space-time. It …
We analyze in full-detail the geometric structure of the covariant phase space (CPS) of any local field theory defined over a space-time with boundary. To this end, we introduce a new frame: the "relative bicomplex framework". It is the result of merging an extended version of the "relative framework" (initially developed in the context of algebraic topology by R.~Bott and L.W.~Tu in the 1980s to deal with boundaries) and the variational bicomplex framework (the differential geometric arena for the variational calculus). The relative bicomplex framework is the natural one to deal with field th…
On the basis of dynamic quantization method we build in this paper a new mathematically correct quantization scheme of gravity. In the frame of this scheme we develop a canonical formalism in tetrad-connection variables in 4-D theory of pure gravity. In this formalism the regularized quantized fields corresponding to the classical tetrad and connection fields are constructed. It is shown, that the regularized fields satisfy to general covariant equations of motion, which have the classical form. In order to solve these equations the iterative procedure is offered.
The covariant phase space method of Iyer, Lee, Wald, and Zoupas gives an elegant way to understand the Hamiltonian dynamics of Lagrangian field theories without breaking covariance. The original literature however does not systematically treat total derivatives and boundary terms, which has led to some confusion about how exactly to apply the formalism in the presence of boundaries. In particular the original construction of the canonical Hamiltonian relies on the assumed existence of a certain boundary quantity "$B$", whose physical interpretation has not been clear. We here give an algorithm…
We show that the Palatini--Cartan--Holst formulation of General Relativity in tetrad variables must be complemented with additional requirements on the fields when boundaries are taken into account for the associated BV theory to induce a compatible BFV theory on the boundary.
It is proven that the usual quadratic general-covariant Lagrangian for the Dirac field leads to a symmetric, divergence-free energy-momentum tensor in the standard Riemannian framework of space-time without torsion, provided the tetrad field components are the only quantities related to gravitation that are varied independently.
Some recent results show that the covariant path integral and the integral over physical degrees of freedom give contradicting results on curved background and on manifolds with boundaries. This looks like a conflict between unitarity and covariance. We argue that this effect is due to the use of non-covariant measure on the space of physical degrees of freedom. Starting with the reduced phase space path integral and using covariant measure throughout computations we recover standard path integral in the Lorentz gauge and the Moss and Poletti BRST-invariant boundary conditions. We also demonst…
We calculate the deflection angle, as well as the positions and magnifications of the lensed images, in the case of covariant $f(T)$ gravity. We first extract the spherically symmetric solutions for both the pure-tetrad and the covariant formulation of the theory, since considering spherical solutions the extension to the latter is crucial, in order for the results not to suffer from frame-dependent artifacts. Applying the weak-field, perturbative approximation we extract the deviations of the solutions comparing to General Relativity. Furthermore, we calculate the deflection angle and then th…
We apply the 1+1+2 covariant semi-tetrad approach to describe a general static and spherically symmetric relativistic stellar object which contains two fluids with anisotropic pressure. The corresponding Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are then obtained in covariant form for the anisotropic case. These equations are used to obtain new exact solutions using direct resolution and reconstruction techniques. Finally, we show that three of the generating theorems known for the single fluid case can also be used to obtain two-fluid solutions from single fluid ones.
We study the variational principle and derivation of the field equations for different classes of teleparallel gravity theories, using both their metric-affine and covariant tetrad formulations. These theories have in common that in addition to the tetrad or metric, they employ a flat connection as additional field variable, but differ by the presence of absence of torsion and nonmetricity for this independent connection. Besides the different underlying geometric formulation using a tetrad or metric as fundamental field variable, one has different choices to introduce the conditions of vanish…
Einstein's vierbein formulation of general relativity based on the notion of distant parallelism (teleparallelism) naturally introduces a covariant surface term in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert action. We investigate the action principle in teleparallelism with the existence of spacetime boundaries and find that the covariant surface term exactly eliminates all the unwanted surface terms reside in the metric formulation of general relativity, as the role of a Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) term. The identity of such a covariant GHY term is further confirmed by the recovery of the correct black …
Gravitation theory meets spontaneous symmetry breaking when the structure group of the principal linear frame bundle $LX$ over a world manifold $X^4$ is reducible to the Lorentz group $SO(3,1)$. The physical underlying reason of this reduction is Dirac fermion matter possessing only exact Lorentz symmetries. The associated Higgs field is a tetrad gravitational field $h$ represented by a section of the quotient $\Si$ of $LX$ by $SO(3,1)$. The feature of gravity as a Higgs field issues from the fact that, in the presence of different tetrad fields, there are nonequivalent representations of cota…
We study the entropy of the black hole with torsion using the covariant form of the partition function. The regularization of infinities appearing in the semiclassical calculation is shown to be consistent with the grand canonical boundary conditions. The correct value for the black hole entropy is obtained provided the black hole manifold has two boundaries, one at infinity and one at the horizon. However, one can construct special coordinate systems, in which the entropy is effectively associated with only one of these boundaries.
We prove the equivalence in the covariant phase space of the metric and connection formulations for Palatini gravity, with nonmetricity and torsion, on a spacetime manifold with boundary. To this end, we will rely on the cohomological approach provided by the relative bicomplex framework. Finally, we discuss some of the physical implications derived from this equivalence in the context of singularity identification through curvature invariants.
We present a Lagrangian theory of gravitation that develops some ideas proposed several years ago. It is formulated on the 10-dimensional space $\mathcal{S}$ of the local Lorentz frames (tetrads) and it is covariant under the symplectic group $Sp(4, \mathbf{R})$, locally isomorphyic to the anti-de Sitter group $SO(2, 3)$. The corresponding transformation formulas contain a constant $ \ell$, besides the light velocity $c$. We also assume the covariance under the "total dilatations" of all the coordinates of the tangent spaces of $\mathcal{S}$. These symmetries, that we may call "augmented Loren…
The f(T) gravity is nowadays being widely used for cosmological model building, as well as for constructing spherically symmetric solutions. In its classical pure tetrad formulation it violates the local Lorentz symmetry in the space of tetrads. By using an appropriate spin connection it can be brought to a formally Lorentz invariant shape. However, despite some mathematical elegance obtained and new options of looking for non-standard couplings to matter probably made possible, it is fully equivalent in itself to the initial formulation. It seems that this fact, that the covariantisation does…
In this paper we study properties that the vacuum must possess in the minimal extension to the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR) where the action is supplemented with a quadratic torsion term. No assumption is made about the weakness of the quadratic term although in the weak-field regime the validity of our previously derived perturbative solution is confirmed. Regarding the exact nature of the vacuum, it is found that if the center of symmetry is to be regular, the mathematical conditions on the tetrad at the isotropy point mimic those of general relativity. With respect t…
According to general relativity, the interaction of a matter field with gravitation requires the simultaneous introduction of a tetrad field, which is a field related to translations, and a spin connection, which is a field assuming values in the Lie algebra of the Lorentz group. These two fields, however, are not independent. By analyzing the constraint between them, it is concluded that the relevant local symmetry group behind general relativity is provided by the Lorentz group. Furthermore, it is shown that the minimal coupling prescription obtained from the Lorentz covariant derivative coi…
Symmetric teleparallel gravity is shown to be integrable in the presence of boundaries, given the consistent implementation of constraints in the covariant phase space formalism.
The internal structure of the tetrads in a Poincaré non linear gauge theory of gravity is considered. Minkowskian coordinates becomes dynamical degrees of freedom playing the role of Goldstone bosons of the translations. A critical length allowing a covariant expansion similar to the weak field approach is deduced, the zeroth order metric being maximally symmetric (Minkowskian in some cases).
It is shown in the covariant phase space formalism that the Noether charges with respect to the diffeomorphism generated by vector fields and their horizontal variations in general relativity form a diffeomorphism algebra. It is also shown with the help of the null tetrad which is well defined everywhere that the central term of the reduced diffeomorphism algebra on the Killing horizon for a large class of vector fields vanishes.
{\it If gravity is a metric field by Einstein, it is a Higgs field.} Gravitation theory meets spontaneous symmetry breaking in accordance with the Equivalence Principle reformulated in the spirit of Klein-Chern geometries of invariants. In gravitation theory, the structure group of the principal linear frame bundle $LX$ over a world manifold $X^4$ is reducible to the connected Lorentz group $SO(3,1)$. The physical underlying reason of this reduction is Dirac fermion matter possessing only exact Lorentz symmetries. The associated Higgs field is a tetrad gravitational field $h$ represented by a …
The Palatini formulation is used to develop a genuine connection theory for general relativity, in which the gravitational field is represented by a Lorentz-valued spin connection. The existence of a tetrad field, given by the Fock-Ivanenko covariant derivative of the tangent-space coordinates, implies a coupling between the spin connection and the coordinate vector-field, which turns out to be the responsible for the onset of curvature. This connection-coordinate coupling can thus be considered as the very foundation of the gravitational interaction. The peculiar form of the tetrad field is s…
We explore the consequences of assuming that the bounded space-time subsets contain a finite number of degrees of freedom. A physically natural hypothesis is that this number is additive for spatially separated subsets. We show that this assumption conflicts with the Lorentz symmetry of Minkowski space since it implies that a conserved current determines the number of degrees of freedom. However, the entanglement across boundaries can lead to a subadditive property for the degrees of freedom of spatially separated sets. We show that this condition and the Poincare symmetry lead to the Bousso c…
The utility of the U(1)$^3$ model as a test laboratory for quantum gravity has recently been emphasized in a recent series of papers due to Varadarajan et al. The simplification from SU(2) to U(1)$^3$ can be performed simply by hand within the Hamiltonian formulation by dropping all non-Abelian terms from the Gauss, spatial diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints respectively. However, one may ask from which Lagrangian formulation this theory descends. For the SU(2) theory it is known that one can choose the Palatini action, Holst action or (anti-)selfdual action (Euclidian signature) as st…
The 1+3 covariant equations, embedded in an extended tetrad formalism and describing a space-time with an arbitrary energy-momentum distribution, are reconsidered. It is shown that, provided the 1+3 splitting is performed with respect to a generic timelike congruence with tangent vector u, the Einstein field equations can be regarded as the integrability conditions for the Jacobi and Bianchi equations together with the Ricci equations for u. The same conclusion holds for a generic null congruence in the Newman-Penrose framework.
It is well known that Einstein General Relativity can be expressed covariantly in bi-metric spacetime, without the uncertainties which arise from the effects of gravitational energy-momentum pseudo-tensors. However the effect that the Strong Principle of Equivalence (SPOE) has on the curved and flat bi-metric spacetime tetrad structure has not been fully explored. In the context of bi-metric General Relativity the (SPOE) requires that: a) in the absence of gravitation due to spacetime curvature a Global Inertial Cartesian Minkowski (GICM) spacetime frame exists in which Special Relativity is v…
[Abridged] In its standard formulation, the $f(T)$ field equations are not invariant under local Lorentz transformations, and thus the theory does not inherit the causal structure of special relativity. A locally Lorentz covariant $f(T)$ gravity theory has been devised recently, and this local causality problem has been overcome. The nonlocal question, however, is left open. If gravitation is to be described by this covariant $f(T)$ gravity theory there are a number of issues that ought to be examined in its context, including the question as to whether its field equations allow homogeneous Gö…
Using the Cartan formulation of General Relativity, we construct a well defined lattice-regularized theory capable to describe large non-perturbative quantum fluctuations of the frame field (or the metric) and of the spin connection. To that end we need to present the tetrad by a composite field built as a bilinear combination of fermion fields. The theory is explicitly invariant under local Lorentz transformations and, in the continuum limit, under general covariant transformations, or diffeomorphisms. Being well defined for large and fast varying fields at the ultraviolet cutoff, the theory …
A gauge theory of gravity based on a nonlinear realization (NLR) of the local Conform-Affine (CA) group of symmetry transformations is presented. The coframe fields and gauge connections of the theory are obtained. The tetrads and Lorentz group metric are used to induce a spacetime metric. The inhomogenously transforming (under the Lorentz group) connection coefficients serve as gravitational gauge potentials used to define covariant derivatives accommodating minimal coupling of matter and gauge fields. On the other hand, the tensor valued connection forms serve as auxillary dynamical fields a…
The Poincaré gauge gravity (PGG) with the underlying vector fields of tetrads and spin-connections is perhaps the best theory candidate for gravitation to be unified with the other three elementary forces of nature. There is a clear analogy between local frame in PGG and local internal symmetry space in the Standard Model. As a result, the spin-connection fields, gauging the local frame Lorentz symmetry group SO(1,3)_{LF}, appear in PGG much as photons and gluons appear in SM. We propose that such an analogy may follow from their common emergent nature allowing to derive PGG in the same way as…
A review of the treatment of boundaries in general relativity is presented with the emphasis on application to the formulations of Einstein's equations used in numerical relativity. At present, it is known how to treat boundaries in the harmonic formulation of Einstein's equations and a tetrad formulation of the Einstein-Bianchi system. However, a universal approach valid for other formulations is not in hand. In particular, there is no satisfactory boundary theory for the 3+1 formulations which have been highly successful in binary black hole simulation. I discuss the underlying problems that…
