The superconducting TMD 4Hb-TaS$_2$ consists of alternating layers of H and T structures, which in their bulk form are metallic and Mott-insulating, respectively. Recently, this compound has been proposed as a candidate chiral superconductor, due to an observed enhancement of the muon spin relaxation at $T_c$. 4Hb-TaS$_2$ also exhibits a puzzling $T$-linear specific heat at low temperatures, which is unlikely to be caused by disorder. Elucidating the origin of this behavior is an essential step in discerning the true nature of the superconducting ground state. Here, we propose a simple model that attributes the $T$-linear specific heat to the emergence of a robust multi-band gapless superconducting state. We show that an extended regime of gapless superconductivity naturally appears when the pair-breaking scattering rate on distinct Fermi-surface pockets differs significantly, and the pairing interaction is predominantly intra-pocket. Using a tight-binding model derived from first-principle calculations, we show that the pair-breaking scattering rate promoted by slow magnetic fluctuations on the T layers, which arise from proximity to a Mott transition, can be significantly different in the various H-layer dominated Fermi pockets depending on their hybridization with T-layer states. Thus, our results suggest that the ground state of 4Hb-TaS$_2$ consists of Fermi pockets displaying gapless superconductivity, which are shunted by superconducting Fermi pockets that are nearly decoupled from the T-layers.
We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled systems under superconducting proximity effect into a gapless phase where parts of the normal state Fermi surface are gapped, and the ungapped parts are reconstructed into a small Fermi surface of Bogoliubov quasiparticles at zero energy. Charge distribution, spin texture, and density of states of such "partial Fermi surface" are discussed. Material platforms for its physical realization are proposed.
We reveal that in a magnetically polarized medium, a specific commensurate triplet pair density wave (TPDW) superconducting (SC) state, the staggered d-wave $Π$-triplet state, may coexist with homogeneous triplet SC states and even dominate eliminating them under generic conditions. When only this TPDW SC state is present, we have the remarkable phenomenon of gapless superconductivity. This may explain part of the difficulties in the realization of the engineered localized Majorana fermion modes for topological quantum computation. We point out qualitative characteristics of the tunneling dens…
Gapless helical superconductivity on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator
We study a two-dimensional heterostructure comprised of a monolayer of the magnetic insulator chromium triiodide (CrI$_3$) on a superconducting lead (Pb) substrate. Through first-principles computation and a tight-binding model, we demonstrate that charge transfer from the Pb substrate dopes the CrI$_3$ into an effective half-metal, allowing for the onset of a gapless topological superconductivity phase via the proximity effect. This phase, in which there exists a superconducting gap only in part of the Fermi surface, is shown to occur generically in 2D half-metal-superconductor heterostructur…
Recently it was demonstrated that the long-known transition between the gap and gapless superconducting states in the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory of superconducting alloy with paramagnetic impurities is of the Lifshitz's type, i.e. at zero temperature this is the $2\frac12$ order phase transition. Since transitions of this kind in a normal metal are always associated to certain topological changes, then below we clarify the topological nature of the transition under consideration. Namely, we demonstrate that the topological invariant which in process of the transition undergoes the change is noth…
We show that a single-fermion quantum dot acquires odd-frequency Gor'kov anomalous averages in proximity to strongly correlated Majorana zero modes, described by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Despite the presence of finite anomalous pairing, the superconducting gap vanishes for the intermediate coupling strength between the quantum dot and Majoranas. The increase of the coupling leads to smooth suppression of the original quasiparticles. This effect might be used as a characterization tool for recently proposed tabletop realizations of the SYK model.

Gapless Magnetic and Quasiparticle Excitations due to the Coexistence of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ : A study of $^{115}$In-NQR under Pressure
A fundamental problem posed from the study of correlated electron compounds, of which heavy-fermion systems are prototypes, is the need to understand the physics of states near a quantum critical point (QCP). At a QCP, magnetic order is suppressed continuously to zero temperature and unconventional superconductivity often appears. Here, we report pressure ($P$) -dependent $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRh$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$In$_5$. These experiments reveal an antiferromagnetic (AF) QCP at $P_{\rm c}^{\rm AF}$ = 1.2 GPa where a dome o…
We study the physical property of pair density wave (PDW) and fluctuating PDW, and use it to build an effective theory of the strongly interacting pseudogap phase in cuprate high temperature superconductors. In Chapter2, we study how Fulde-Ferrell state, the simplest form of PDW, responds to incident light. The collective motion of the condensate plays a key role; gauge invariance guides us to the correct result. From Chapter 3 to Chapter 7, we construct a pseudogap metallic state by considering quantum fluctuating PDW. We analyze a recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) discovery of perio…

An electron system with pre-existing local moments and an effective electron-electron attraction can exhibit simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order. Increasing the magnetic coupling weakens pairing and the ground state loses superconductivity at a critical coupling. In the vicinity of the critical coupling magnetic order dramatically modifies the quasiparticle dispersion in the superconductor, creating low energy spectral weight and significant gap anisotropy in the notional 's-wave' state. Using a Monte Carlo approach to the Hubbard-Kondo lattice problem we establish a thermal phase …
Plasmonic excitations behave fundamentally different in layered materials in comparison to bulk systems. They form gapless modes, which in turn couple at low energies to the electrons. Thereby they can strongly influence superconducting instabilities. Here, we show how these excitations can be controlled from the outside via changes in the dielectric environment or in the doping level, which allows for external tuning of the superconducting transition temperature. By solving the gap equation for an effective system, we find that the plasmonic influence can both strongly enhance or reduce the t…
Superconductivity of the $Sr_2 Ca_{12} Cu_{24} O_{41}$ spin ladder system: Are the superconducting pairing and the spin-gap formation of the same origin?
We report inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals of the bilayer cuprate family La$_{2-x}$Ca$_{1+x}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{6+δ}$, including two crystals made superconducting (transitions at 45 and 55 K) by high-pressure annealing in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The magnetic excitations in the non-superconducting crystal have a similar temperature-dependence as those in weakly hole-doped cuprates. In the superconducting crystals, there is a near-uniform suppression of the magnetic spectral weight with increasing temperature; in particular, there are no signs of a spin gap or "resonance" peak. …
It is demonstrated that the known for a long time transition between the gap and the gapless states in the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory of a superconductor with paramagnetic impurities is of the Lifshitz type, i.e. of the $2\frac12$ order phase transition. We reveal the emergence of a cuspidal edge at the density of states surface $N(ω,Δ_0)$ ($Δ_0$ is the value of the superconducting order parameter in the absence of magnetic impurities) and the occurrence of the catastrophe phenomenon at the transition point. We study the stability of such a transition with respect to the spatial fluctuations of …
Magnet$/$superconductor hybrids (MSHs) hold the promise to host emergent topological superconducting phases. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems in proximity to s-wave superconductors have shown evidence of gapped topological superconductivity with zero-energy end states and chiral edge modes. Recently, it was proposed that the bulk transition-metal dichalcogenide 4Hb$-$TaS$_2$ is a gapless topological nodal-point superconductor (TNPSC). However, there has been no experimental realization of a TNPSC in a MSH system yet. Here we present the discovery of TNPSC in …
Recently, multifold fermions characterized by band crossings with multifold degeneracy and Fermi surfaces with nontrivial Chern numbers have been discovered experimentally in AlPt[arXiv:1812.03310] and XSi(X=Rh,Co)[arXiv:1812.04466][arXiv:1901.03358][arXiv:1809.01312]. In this work, we largely expand the family of multifold fermion materials by pointing out that several well-studied noncentrosymmetric superconductors are indeed multifold fermion metals. Importantly, their normal state topological properties, which have been ignored in previous studies, play an important role in the superconduc…
In the correlated electron system with the pseudogap, there are full-gapped domains and Fermi-arced domains coexisting. Those domains are created by the quantum-fluctuated antiferromagnetic fluctuations that generate the short-ranged attractive potential to produce the Fermi arcs and the superconductivity. In the full-gapped domains, s-wave or (d_{x^2-y^2}\pm id_{xy})-wave symmetry of the electron pairs is favored. In the Fermi-arced domains, only d_{x^2-y^2}-wave symmetry of pairs is stable. Superconductivity of different pairing symmetry coexists in different domains, as well. Different from…
A microscopic theory of the electronic spectrum and of superconductivity within the t-J model on the honeycomb lattice is developed. We derive the equations for the normal and anomalous Green functions in terms of the Hubbard operators by applying the projection technique. Superconducting pairing of d + id'-type mediated by the antiferromagnetic exchange is found. The superconducting Tc as a function of hole doping exhibits a two-peak structure related to the van Hove singularities of the density of states for the two-band t-J model. At half-filling and for large enough values of the exchange …
We study the possibility of topological superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric monolayer and trilayer TaS$_2$ with out-of-plane mirror symmetry. A gapless time-reversal invariant f+s-wave pairing state with even mirror parity is found to be a promising candidate. This mixing state holds 12(36) nodes at the Fermi pockets around $Γ$ for monolayer(trilayer) case and its unconventional superconductivity is consistent with the STM experiments observed in 2$H$-TaS$_2$ thin flakes. Furthermore, with doping or under uniaxial pressure for trilayer 2$H$-TaS$_2$, large-Chern-number time-reversal sym…
Determination of the symmetry property of superconducting gaps has been a central issue in studies to understand the mechanisms of unconventional superconductivity. Although it is often difficult to completely achieve the aforementioned goal, the existence of superconducting nodes, one of the few important experimental signatures of unconventional superconductivity, plays a vital role in exploring the possibility of unconventional superconductivity. The interplay between superconducting nodes and topology has been actively investigated, and intensive research in the past decade has revealed va…
Topological superconductivity is an exotic phenomenon due to the symmetry-protected topological surface state, in which a quantum system has an energy gap in the bulk but supports gapless excitations confined to its boundary. Symmetries including central and time-reversal (TRS), along with their relations with topology, are crucial for topological superconductivity. We report muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on a topological noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$ to study its TRS and gap symmetry. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments indicate the absence of internal magnetic fie…
