In recent years, Majorana physics has attracted considerable attention in both theoretical and experimental studies due to exotic new phenomena and its prospects for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. To this end, one needs to engineer the interplay between superconductivity and electronic properties in a topological insulator, but experimental work remains scarce and ambiguous. Here we report experimental evidence for topological superconductivity induced in a HgTe quantum well, a two-dimensional topological insulator that exhibits the quantum spin Hall effect. The ac Josephson effect demonstrates that the supercurrent has a $4π$-periodicity with the superconducting phase difference as indicated by a doubling of the voltage step for multiple Shapiro steps. In addition, an anomalous SQUID-like response to a perpendicular magnetic field shows that this $4π$-periodic supercurrent originates from states located on the edges of the junction. Both features appear strongest when the sample is gated towards the quantum spin Hall regime, thus providing evidence for induced topological superconductivity in the quantum spin Hall edge states.
We investigate the interplay of superconductivity and the topological order in the topological insulator (TI) formed in HgTe-CdTe quantum wells coupled to the s-wave isotropic superconductor (SC) placed on top of CdTe layer. Proximity effect induces superconducting correlations in TI effecting classification of the TI electronic states. Depending on the strength of the coupling and the initial chemical potentials in SC and TI, the edge states either (i) become gapped, or (ii) hybridize into localized Andreev states, or else (iii) merge with the bulk states turning the TI into an anisotropic na…
We investigate the Andreev reflection process in high-mobility HgTe/CdTe quantum wells. We find that Andreev conductance probes the dynamics of massive 2+1 Dirac fermions, and that both specular Andreev reflection and retroreflection can be realized even in presence of a large mismatch between the Fermi wavelengths at the two sides of the normal/superconducting junction.
Frequency analysis of the rf emission of oscillating Josephson supercurrent is a powerful passive way of probing properties of topological Josephson junctions. In particular, measurements of the Josephson emission enables to detect the expected presence of topological gapless Andreev bound states that give rise to emission at half the Josephson frequency $f_J$, rather than conventional emission at $f_J$. Here we report direct measurement of rf emission spectra on Josephson junctions made of HgTe-based gate-tunable topological weak links. The emission spectra exhibit a clear signal at half the …
The Andreev reflection (AR) in 2D HgTe/CdTe quantum well-superconductor hybrid systems is studied. A quantized AR with AR coefficient equal to one is predicted, which is due to the multi-Andreev reflection near the interface of the hybrid system. Importantly, this quantized AR is not only universal, i.e., independent of any system parameters and quality of the coupling of the hybrid system, it is also robust against disorder as well. As a result of this quantum Andreev effect, the conductance exhibits a quantized plateau when the external bias is less the superconductor gap.
We report on Landau level spectroscopy studies of two HgTe quantum wells (QWs) near or at the critical well thickness, where the band gap vanishes. In magnetic fields up to $B$=16T, oriented perpendicular to the QW plane, we observe a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence for the energy of the dominant cyclotron resonance (CR) transition characteristic of two-dimensional Dirac fermions. The dominant CR line exhibits either a single or double absorption lineshape for the gapless or gapped QW. Using an effective Dirac model, we deduce the band velocity of single valley Dirac fermions in gapless HgTe quantum wel…
We use Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy to characterize the current-phase relation (CPR) of Josephson Junctions from 3-dimentional topological insulator HgTe (3D-HgTe). We find clear skewness in the CPRs of HgTe junctions ranging in length from 200 nm to 600 nm. The skewness indicates that the Josephson current is predominantly carried by Andreev bound states with high transmittance, and the fact that the skewness persists in junctions that are longer than the mean free path suggests that the effect may be related to the helical nature of the Andreev bound states …
We study transport properties of HgTe quantum wells with critical well thickness, where the band gap is closed, and the low energy spectrum is described by a single Dirac cone. In this work, we examined both macroscopic and micron-sized (mesocopic) samples. In micron-sized samples, we observe a magnetic field induced, quantized resistance ($\sim h/2e^{2}$) at Landau filling factor $ν=0$, corresponding to the formation of helical edge states centered at the charge neutrality point (CNP). In macroscopic samples, the resistance near zero Landau level (LL) reveals strong oscillations, which we att…
The Josephson effect describes the generic appearance of a supercurrent in a weak link between two superconductors. Its exact physical nature however deeply influences the properties of the supercurrent. Detailed studies of Josephson junctions can reveal microscopic properties of the superconducting pairing (spin-triplet correlations, $d$-wave symmetry) or of the electronic transport (quantum dot, ballistic channels). In recent years, considerable efforts have focused on the coupling of superconductors to topological insulators, in which transport is mediated by topologically protected Dirac s…
The double quantum well systems consisting of two HgTe layers separated by a tunnel-transparent barrier are expected to manifest a variety of phase states including two-dimensional gapless semimetal and two-dimensional topological insulator. The presence of several subbands in such systems leads to a rich filling factor diagram in the quantum Hall regime. We have performed magnetotransport measurements of the HgTe-based double quantum wells in both gapless and gapped state and observed numerous crossings between the Landau levels belonging to different subbands. We analyze the Landau level cro…
The proximity-induced superconducting state in the 3-dimensional topological insulator HgTe has been studied using electronic transport of a normal metal-superconducting point contact as a spectroscopic tool (Andreev point contact spectroscopy). By analyzing the conductance as a function of voltage for various temperatures, magnetic fields and gate-voltages, we find evidence, in equilibrium, for an induced order parameter in HgTe of $70\,μ$eV and a niobium order parameter of $1.1\,$meV. To understand the full conductance curve as a function of applied voltage we suggest a non-equilibrium drive…
We experimentally investigate electron transport through the interface between a superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion. The interface is realized as a tunnel NbN side contact to a narrow 8~nm HgTe quantum well. It demonstrates a typical Andreev behavior with finite conductance within the superconducting gap. Surprisingly, the conductance is modulated by a number of equally-spaced oscillations. The oscillations are present only within the superconducting gap and at lowest, below 1~K, temperatures. The oscillations disappear completely in magnetic f…
The two-dimensional topological insulator phase has been observed previously in single HgTe-based quantum wells with inverted subband ordering. In double quantum wells (DQWs), coupling between the layers introduces additional degrees of freedom leading to a rich phase picture. By studying local and nonlocal resistance in HgTe-based DQWs, we observe both the gapless semimetal phase and the topological insulator phase, depending on parameters of the samples and according to theoretical predictions. Our work establishes the DQWs as a promising platform for realization of multilayer topological in…
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is the property of a new state of matter which preserves time-reversal, has an energy gap in the bulk, but has topologically robust gapless states at the edge. Recently, it has been shown that HgTe quantum wells realize this novel effect. In this work, we start from realistic tight-binding models and demonstrate the existence of the helical edge states in HgTe quantum wells and calculate their physical properties. We also show that 3d HgTe is a topological insulator under uniaxial strain, and show that the surface states are described by single-component mass…
We investigated the magnetotransport properties of strained, 80nm thick HgTe layers featuring a high mobility of mu =4x10^5 cm^2/Vs. By means of a top gate the Fermi-energy is tuned from the valence band through the Dirac type surface states into the conduction band. Magnetotransport measurements allow to disentangle the different contributions of conduction band electrons, holes and Dirac electrons to the conductivity. The results are are in line with previous claims that strained HgTe is a topological insulator with a bulk gap of ~15meV and gapless surface states.
The opening of a band gap due to compressive uniaxial strain renders bulk HgTe a strong three-dimensional topological insulators with protected gapless surface states at any surface. By employing a six-band k.p model, we determine the spin textures of the topological surface states of strained HgTe using their close relations with the mirror Chern numbers of the system and the orbital composition of the surface states. We show that at surfaces with C2v point group symmetry an increase in the strain magnitude triggers a topological phase transition where the winding number of the surface state …
We have measured the differential resistance in a two-dimensional topological insulator (2DTI) in a HgTe quantum well, as a function of the applied dc current. The transport near the charge neutrality point is characterized by a pair of counter propagating gapless edge modes. In the presence of an electric field, the energy is transported by counter propagating channels in the opposite direction. We test a hot carrier effect model and demonstrate that the energy transfer complies with the Wiedemann Franz law near the charge neutrality point in the edge transport regime.
We find that the vortex bound states in superconducting topological semimetals are gapless owing to topological massless excitations in their normal states. We demonstrate this universal result in a variety of semimetals including Dirac and Weyl semimetals, threefold degenerate spin-1 fermions, spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl fermion semimetals and other exotic fermion semimetals. The formation of these gapless bound states are closely related to their Andreev specular reflection and propagating Andreev modes in $π$ phase superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. We further de…
The rise of topological phases of matter is strongly connected to their potential to host Majorana bound states, a powerful ingredient in the search for a robust, topologically protected, quantum information processing. In order to produce such states, a method of choice is to induce superconductivity in topological insulators. The engineering of the interplay between superconductivity and the electronic properties of a topological insulator is a challenging task and it is consequently very important to understand the physics of simple superconducting devices such as Josephson junctions, in wh…
We report transport measurements in HgTe-based quantum wells with well width of 8 nm, corresponding to quantum spin Hall state, subject to in-plane magnetic field. In the absence of the magnetic field the local and nonlocal resistances behave very similar, which confirms the edge state transport in our system. In the magnetic field, we observe a monotonic decrease of the resistance with saturation of local resistance, while nonlocal resistance disappears completely, independent of the gate voltage. We believe that these evidences of metallic behavior indicate a transition to a gapless two-dime…
In this study we have measured the magnetoresistance response of inverted HgTe quantum wells in the presence of a large parallel magnetic field up to 33 T is applied. We show that in quantum wells with inverted band structure a monotonically decreasing magnetoresistance is observed when a magnetic field up to order 10 T is applied parallel to the quantum well plane. This feature is accompanied by a vanishing of non-locality and is consistent with a predicted modification of the energy spectrum that becomes gapless at a critical in-plane field $B_{c}$. Magnetic fields in excess of $B_c$ allow u…
HgTe quantum wells and surfaces of three-dimensional topological insulators support Dirac fermions with a single-valley band dispersion. In the presence of disorder they experience weak antilocalization, which has been observed in recent transport experiments. In this work we conduct a comparative theoretical study of the weak antilocalization in HgTe quantum wells and topological surface states. The difference between these two single-valley systems comes from a finite band gap (effective Dirac mass) in HgTe quantum wells in contrast to gapless (massless) surface states in topological insulat…
We developed the theory which describes the Floquet engineering of surface electronic modes in bulk mercury telluride (HgTe) by a circularly polarized electromagnetic field. The analysis shows that the field results in appearance of the surface states which arise from the mixing of conduction and valence bands of HgTe. Their branches lie near the center of the Brillouin zone and have the Dirac dispersion characteristic for topological states. Besides them, the irradiation induces the gap between the conduction and valence bands of HgTe. Thus, the irradiation can turn mercury telluride into top…
HgTe quantum wells possess remarkable physical properties as for instance the quantum spin Hall state and the 'single-valley' analog of graphene, depending on their layer thicknesses and barrier composition. However, double HgTe quantum wells yet contain more fascinating and still unrevealed features. Here we report on the study of the quantum phase transitions in tunnel-coupled HgTe layers separated by CdTe barrier. We demonstrate that this system has a 3/2 pseudo spin degree of freedom, which features a number of particular properties associated with the spin-dependent coupling between HgTe …
We study a periodic arrangement of magnetic regions in a one-dimensional superconducting wire. Due to the local exchange field, each region supports Andreev bound states that hybridize forming Bloch bands in the subgap spectrum of what we call the Andreev crystal (AC). As an illustration, ACs with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic alignment of the magnetic regions are considered. We relate the spectral asymmetry index of a spin-resolved Hamiltonian to the spin polarization and identify it as the observable that quantifies the closing and reopening of the excitation gap. In particular, antife…
We study Andreev reflection and Josephson currents in topological bilayer exciton condensates (TEC). These systems can create 100% spin entangled nonlocal currents with high amplitudes due to perfect nonlocal Andreev reflection. This Andreev reflection process can be gate tuned from a regime of purely retro reflection to purely specular reflection. We have studied the bound states in TEC-TI-TEC Josephson junctions and find a gapless dispersion for perpendicular incidence. The presence of a sharp transition in the supercurrent-phase relationship when the system is in equilibrium is a signature …
A topological superconductor is a fully gapped superconductor that exhibits exotic zero-energy Andreev surface states at interfaces with a normal metal. In this paper we investigate the properties of a three-dimensional time reversal invariant topological superconductor by means of a two-band model with unconventional pairing in both the inter- and intraband channels. Due to the bulk-boundary correspondence the presence of Andreev surface states in this system is directly related to the topological structure of the bulk wavefunctions, which is characterized by a winding number. Using quasiclas…
We investigate the crossover from the semiclassical to the quantum description of electron energy states in a chaotic metal grain connected to a superconductor. We consider the influence of scattering off point impurities (quantum disorder) and of quantum diffraction (quantum chaos) on the electron density of states. We show that both the quantum disorder and the quantum chaos open a gap near the Fermi energy. The size of the gap is determined by the mean free time in disordered systems and by the Ehrenfest time in clean chaotic systems. Particularly, if both times become infinitely large, the…
We explore Andreev states at the interface of graphene and a superconductor for a uniform pseudo-magnetic field. Near the zeroth-pseudo Landau level, we find a topological transition as a function of applied Zeeman field, at which a gapless helical mode appears. This 1D mode is protected from backscattering as long as intervalley- and spin-flip scattering are suppressed. We discuss a possible experimental platform to detect this gapless mode based on strained suspended membranes on a superconductor, in which dynamical strain causes charge pumping
Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter which can not be adiabatically connected to conventional insulators and semiconductors. They are characterized by a full insulating gap in the bulk and gapless edge or surface states which are protected by time-reversal symmetry. These topological materials have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a variety of systems, including HgTe quantum wells, BiSb alloys, and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystals. We review theoretical models, materials properties and experimental results on two-dimensional and three-dimensi…
The unique feature of surface states in topological insulators is the so-called "spin-momentum locking", which means that electron spin is oriented along a fixed direction for a given momentum and forms a texture in the momentum space. In this work, we study spin textures of two typical topological insulators in Hg-Based Chalcogenides, namely HgTe and HgS, based on both the first principles calculation and the eight band Kane model. We find opposite helicities of spin textures between these two materials, originating from the opposite signs of spin-orbit couplings. Furthermore, we reveal that …
We study transport in a voltage biased superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junction made of semiconducting nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling, as it transitions into a topological superconducting phase for increasing Zeeman field. Despite the absence of a fractional steady-state ac Josephson current in the topological phase, the dissipative multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) current I_dc at different junction transparencies is particularly revealing. It exhibits unique features related to topology, such as the gap inversion, the formation of Majorana bound states, and fermion-pari…
We calculate tunneling conductance of normal metal and superconducting topological insulator CuxBi2Se3 junctions for the possible pairing symmetries. In the presence of gapless Andreev bound states (ABSs), the tunneling conductance shows a zero-bias peak even for the three-dimensional full-gap superconducting state. This zero-bias conductance peak stems from the enhancement of the surface density of states induced by the surface-state transition in momentum space.
The magnetotransport properties of massless Dirac fermions in a gapless HgTe quantum well are investigated. In samples with narrow channels, a large negative magnetoresistance with a Lorentzian profile is observed, which is interpreted as a manifestation of electron viscosity due to electron-electron interaction. Comparison of experiment with theory yields the shear stress relaxation time of the Dirac fermions caused by electron-electron scattering.
We present a theoretical study of electronic transport in a hybrid junction consisting of an excitonic insulator sandwiched between a normal and a superconducting electrode. The normal region is described as a two-band semimetal and the superconducting lead as a two-band superconductor. In the excitonic insulator region, the coupling between carriers in the two bands leads to an excitonic condensate and a gap $Γ$ in the quasiparticle spectrum. We identify four different scattering processes at both interfaces. Two types of normal reflection, intra- and inter-band; and two different Andreev ref…
We present magnetotransport measurements in HgTe quantum well with inverted band structure, which expected to be a two-dimensional topological insulator having the bulk gap with helical gapless states at the edge. The negative magnetoresistance is observed in the local and nonlocal resistance configuration followed by the periodic oscillations damping with magnetic field. We attribute such behaviour to Aharonov-Bohm effect due to magnetic flux through the charge carrier puddles coupled to the helical edge states. The characteristic size of these puddles is about 100 nm.
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) state is a topologically non-trivial state of quantum matter which preserves time-reversal symmetry; it has an energy gap in the bulk, but topologically robust gapless states at the edge. Recently, this novel effect has been predicted and observed in HgTe quantum wells. In this work we predict a similar effect arising in Type-II semiconductor quantum wells made from InAs/GaSb/AlSb. Because of a rare band alignment the quantum well band structure exhibits an "inverted" phase similar to CdTe/HgTe quantum wells, which is a QSH state when the Fermi level lies inside the…
Topological protected surface states are one of the hallmarks of three-dimensional topological insulators. In this work we theoretically analyze the gate-voltage-effects on a quasi-3D layer of HgTe. We find that while the gapless surface states dominate the transport, as an external gate voltage is applied, the existence of bulk charge carriers is likely to occur. We also find that due to screening effects, physical properties that arise from the bottom surface are gate-voltage independent. Finally, we point out the experimental signatures that characterize these effects.
We propose the existence of a substantial charge current parallel to the interface between a noncentrosymmetric superconductor and a metallic ferromagnet. Our analysis focuses upon two complementary orbital-angular-momentum pairing states of the superconductor, exemplifying topologically nontrivial states which are gapped and gapless in the bulk, respectively. Utilizing a quasiclassical scattering theory, we derive an expression for the interface current in terms of Andreev reflection coefficients. Performing a systematic study of the current, we find stark qualitative differences between the …
Among the most interesting predictions in two-dimensional materials with a Dirac cone is the existence of the zeroth Landau level (LL), equally filled by electrons and holes with opposite chirality. The gapless edge states with helical spin structure emerge from Zeeman splitting at the LL filling factor $ν=0$ gapped quantum Hall state. We present observations of a giant nonlocal four-terminal transport in zero-gap HgTe quantum wells at the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state. Our experiment clearly demonstrates the existence of the robust helical edge state in a system with single valley Dirac cone mater…
Josephson junctions based on three-dimensional topological insulators offer intriguing possibilities to realize unconventional $p$-wave pairing and Majorana modes. Here, we provide a detailed study of the effect of a uniform magnetization in the normal region: We show how the interplay between the spin-momentum locking of the topological insulator and an in-plane magnetization parallel to the direction of phase bias leads to an asymmetry of the Andreev spectrum with respect to transverse momenta. If sufficiently large, this asymmetry induces a transition from a regime of gapless, counterpropag…
We show that the quasi-continuous gapless spectrum of Andreev bound states in multi-terminal semi-classical superconducting nanostructures exhibits a big number of topological singularities. We concentrate on Weyl points in a 4-terminal nanostructure, compute their density and correlations in 3D parameter space for a universal RMT model as well as for the concrete nanostructures described by the quantum circuit theory. We mention the opportunities for experimental observation of the effect in a quasi-continuous spectrum.
The discovery of the topological insulators has fueled a surge of interests in the topological phases in periodic systems. Topological insulators have bulk energy gap and topologically protected gapless edge states. The edge states in electronic systems have been detected by observing the transport properties the Hgte quantum wells. The electromagnetic analogues of such electronic edge states have been predicted and observed in photonic crystals, coupled resonators and linear circuits. However, the edge state spectrums of the two dimensional insulators and their electromagnetic analogues haven…
A topological superconductor (TSC) is characterized by the topologically-protected gapless surface state that is essentially an Andreev bound state consisting of Majorana fermions. While a TSC has not yet been discovered, the doped topological insulator CuxBi2Se3, which superconducts below ~3 K, has been predicted to possess a topological superconducting state. We report that the point-contact spectra on the cleaved surface of superconducting CuxBi2Se3 present a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) which signifies unconventional superconductivity. Theoretical considerations of all possible superc…
We present a new platform for creating Majorana bound states from 2D gapless superconducting state in spin-helical systems under the in-plane Zeeman field. Topological 1D channels are formed by quantum confinement of quasiparticles via Andreev reflection from the surrounding fully gapped superconducting region. Our proposal can be realized using narrow strips of magnetic insulators on top of proximitized 3D topological insulators. This setup has key advantages that include: small Zeeman fields, no required fine-tuning of chemical potential, removal of the low-energy detrimental states, and lar…
In a topological insulator (TI) the character of electron transport varies from insulating in the interior of the material to metallic near its surface. Unlike, however, ordinary metals, conducting surface states in TIs are topologically protected and characterized by spin helicity whereby the direction of the electron spin is locked to the momentum direction. In this paper we review selected topics regarding recent theoretical and experimental work on electron transport and related phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) TIs. The review provides a focused introductory dis…

Topological insulators exhibit gapless edge or surface states that are topologically protected by time-reversal symmetry. However, several promising candidates for topologically insulating materials (such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and HgTe) contain spinful nuclei or other types of magnetic impurities that break time-reversal symmetry. We investigate the consequences of such impurities coupled to electronic edge states in a topological insulator quantum ring threaded by a magnetic flux. We use spin conservation and additional symmetry arguments to derive a universal formula for the spectrum of propagatin…
Topological insulators are new quantum states with helical gapless edge or surface states inside the bulk band gap. These topological surface states are robust against the weak time-reversal invariant perturbations, such as lattice distortions and non-magnetic impurities. Recently a variety of topological insulators have been predicted by theories, and observed by experiments. First-principles calculations have been widely used to predict topological insulators with great success. In this review, we summarize the current progress in this field from the perspective of first-principles calculatio…
Topological insulators represent novel phases of quantum matter with an insulating bulk gap and gapless edges or surface states. The two-dimensional topological insulator phase was predicted in HgTe quantum wells and confirmed by transport measurements. Recently, Bi2Se3 and related materials have been proposed as three-dimensional topological insulators with a single Dirac cone on the surface and verified by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. Here, we show unambiguous transport evidence of topological surface states through periodic quantum interference effects in layered s…
Josephson weak links made of two-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) exhibit magnetic oscillations of the supercurrent that are reminiscent of those in superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). We propose a microscopic theory of this effect that goes beyond the approaches based on the standard SQUID theory. For long junctions we find a temperature-driven crossover from Phi_0-periodic SQUID-like oscillations to a 2 Phi_0-quasiperiodic interference pattern with different peaks at even and odd values of the magnetic flux quantum Phi_0=ch/2e. This behavior is absent in short junc…
