We demonstrate how the non-trivial interplay between spin-orbit coupling and nodeless $s$-wave superconductivity can drive a fully gapped two-band topological insulator into a time-reversal invariant gapless topological superconductor supporting symmetry-protected Majorana flat bands. We characterize topological phase diagrams by a ${\mathbb Z}_2 \times{\mathbb Z}_2$ partial Berry-phase invariant, and show that, despite the trivial crystal geometry, no unique bulk-boundary correspondence exists. We trace this behavior to the anisotropic quasiparticle bulk gap closing, linear vs. quadratic, and argue that this provides a unifying principle for gapless topological superconductivity. Experimental implications for tunneling conductance measurements are addressed, relevant for lead chalcogenide materials.
We study a Kitaev model on a square lattice, which describes topologically trivial superconductor when gap opens, while supports topological gapless phase when gap closes. The degeneracy points are characterized by two vortices in momentum space, with opposite winding numbers, which are not removable unless meet together. We show rigorously that the topological gapless phase always hosts a partial Majorana flat band edge modes in a ribbon geometry, although such a single band model has zero Chern number as a topologically trivial superconductor. The flat band disappears when the gapless phase …
We demonstrate that Majorana fermions exist in edges of systems and in a vortex core even for superconductors with nodal excitations such as the d-wave pairing state under a particular but realistic condition in the case with an anti-symmetric spin-orbit interaction and a nonzero magnetic field below the upper critical field. We clarify that the Majorana fermion state is topologically protected in spite of the presence of bulk gapless nodal excitations, because of the existence of a nontrivial topological number. Our finding drastically enlarges target systems where we can explore the Majorana…
In this work, we show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive a fully gapped $p \pm i p$ topological superconductor into a gapless phase which supports symmetry protected Majorana edge states (MESs). Specifically, an in-plane magnetic field can close the bulk gap and create zero energy Majorana flat bands (MFBs) in the excitation spectrum. We show that the MFBs in the gapless regime are protected by symmetry and are associated with MESs. The MFBs acquire finite slopes when s-wave pairing and Rashba spin-oribit coupling terms are added to the Hamiltonian. In this case, novel uni-directional M…
We propose theoretically an effective scheme for braiding Majorana bound states by manipulating the point potential. The vortex pinning effect is carefully elucidated. This effect may be used to control the vortices and Majorana bound states in topological superconductors. The exchange of two vortices induced by moving the potentials is simulated numerically. The zero-energy state in the vortex core is robust with respect to the strength of the potential. The Majorana bound states in a pinned vortex are identified numerically.
We study two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric nodal superconductors under Zeeman field and clarify the field angle dependence of topological properties. It has been shown that the nodal excitation acquires an excitation gap due to the Zeeman field perpendicular to anti-symmetric spin-orbit coupling, and then gapful topological superconductivity is realized. We show that the system undergoes gapful-gapless transition against tilting of the field. The gapless phase remains to show a finite band gap and unusual Majorana edge states in between the bulk bands. The Majorana edge states naturally propa…
We explore possible signatures for observing Majorana Fermions in the tunneling spectroscopy of high-Tc cuprate superconductors. We find that as long as the Rashba spin orbit interaction is in presence either through proximity effect due to an electrode made by heavy metal or by the intrinsic nature of cuprates, in addition to the Heisenberg spin exchange interaction, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and spin dipole-dipole interactions are induced. As a result, $p$-wave superconductivity is induced with the gap function $d$-vector being not aligned with the internal magnetic field of the spin-orbit i…
We present a time-reversal invariant s-wave superconductor supporting Majorana edge modes. The multi-band character of the model together with spin-orbit coupling are key to realizing such a topological superconductor. We characterize the topological phase diagram by using a partial Chern number sum, and show that the latter is physically related to the parity of the fermion number of the time-reversal invariant modes. By taking the self-consistency constraint on the s-wave pairing gap into account, we also establish the possibility of a direct topological superconductor-to-topological insulat…
We study the localization and oscillation properties of the Majorana fermions that arise in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and a Zeeman field coupled with a d-wave superconductor. Despite the angular dependence of the d-wave pairing, localization and oscillation properties are found to be similar to the ones seen in conventional s-wave superconductors. In addition, we study a microscopic lattice version of the previous system that can be characterized by a topological invariant. We derive its real space representation that involves nearest and next-to-near…
Topological superfluids are recently discovered quantum matters that host topologically protected gapless edge states known as Majorana fermions - exotic quantum particles that act as their own anti-particles and obey non-Abelian statistics. Their realizations are believed to lie at the heart of future technologies such as fault-tolerant quantum computation. To date, the most efficient scheme to create topological superfluids and Majorana fermions is based on the Sau-Lutchyn-Tewari-Das Sarma model with a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling on the }\textbf{\textit{x-y}}\textbf{ plane and a large ou…

The generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (GTDGL) theory was first proposed to describe better gap superconductors and the phenomenon of thermal phase-slips (PSs) in defect-free systems. However, there is a lack of information about studies involving PSs in mesoscopic superconductors with surface defects. Thus, in this work, we simulated samples with two co-linear surface defects consisting of a lower $T_c$ superconductor narrowing the sample in its central part. The non-linear GTDGL equations were solved self-consistently under variable applied currents and by considering both gapless an…
We show that time-reversal invariant superconductors in d=2 (d=3) dimensions can support topologically stable Fermi points (lines), characterized by an integer topological charge. Combining this with the momentum space symmetries present, we prove analogs of the fermion doubling theorem: for d=2 lattice models admitting a spin X electron-hole structure, the number of Fermi points is a multiple of four, while for d=3, Fermi lines come in pairs. We show two implications of our findings for topological superconductors in d=3: first, we relate the bulk topological invariant to a topological number…
We focus on the dynamical feature for a $p$-wave superconductor model in different parameter regions in terms of the appearance of gapless edge modes in reel geometry. Firstly, we show the parameter region with gapless edge modes versus a parameter and quasi-momentum. The parameter diagram can be reflected by the expectations of Pauli matrices in global manners. In another view, the dynamical feature of the excitation behave differently in the parameter regions with topological gapless edge modes and not. And the cusps of dynamical return rate vanish as the parameter pass the boundary in the p…
This is a short note presenting a repeated experiment of the half-quantized transport signature given by Majorana chiral modes living in a heterostructure formed by an s-wave superconductor and a quantum-anomalous-Hall insulator.
The existence of an excitation gap in the bulk spectrum is one of the most prominent fingerprints of topological phases of matter. In this paper, we propose a family of two dimensional Hamiltonians that yield an unusual class $D$ topological superconductor with a gapless bulk spectrum but well-localized Majorana edge states. We perform a numerical analysis for a representative model of this phase and suggest a concrete physical realization by analyzing the effect of magnetic impurities on the surface of strong topological insulators.
We present a pedagogical review of topological superconductivity and its consequences in spin-orbit coupled semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures. We start by reviewing the historical origins of the notions of Dirac and Majorana fermions in particle physics and discuss how lower dimensional versions of these emerge in one dimensional superconductors. Ultimately, we focus on Majorana zero-modes, which emerge at defects in the Majorana equation. We then review the definition of the topological invariant, and how it allows the prediction of such Majorana modes from the bulk bandstructure …
Majorana zero modes are usually attributed to topological superconductors. We study a class of two-dimensional topologically trivial superconductors without chiral edge modes, which nevertheless host robust Majorana zero modes in topological defects. The construction of this minimal single-band model is facilitated by the Hopf map and the Hopf invariant. This work will stimulate investigations of Majorana zero modes in superconductors in the topologically trivial regime.
Topological superconductors are novel classes of quantum condensed phases, characterized by topologically nontrivial structures of Cooper pairing states. On the surfaces of samples and in vortex cores of topological superconductors, Majorana fermions, which are particles identified with their own anti-particles, appear as Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The existence and stability of Majorana fermions are ensured by bulk topological invariants constrained by the symmetries of the systems. Majorana fermions in topological superconductors obey a new type of quantum statistics referred to as non-Abeli…
We discuss electric transport through a point contact which bridges Majorana fermion modes appearing at edges of two helical superconductors. The contents focus on effects of interference and interaction unique to the Majorana fermions and role of spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Besides the Josephson current, the quasi-particle conductance depends sensitively on phase difference and relative helicity between the two superconductors. The interaction among the Majorana fermions causes the power-law temperature dependences of conductance for various tunneling channels. Especially, in the presence o…
Majorana fermions are particles identical to their own antiparticles. They have been theoretically predicted to exist in topological superconductors. We report electrical measurements on InSb nanowires contacted with one normal (Au) and one superconducting electrode (NbTiN). Gate voltages vary electron density and define a tunnel barrier between normal and superconducting contacts. In the presence of magnetic fields of order 100 mT we observe bound, mid-gap states at zero bias voltage. These bound states remain fixed to zero bias even when magnetic fields and gate voltages are changed over con…
We develop a unified framework to classify topological defects in insulators and superconductors described by spatially modulated Bloch and Bogoliubov de Gennes Hamiltonians. We consider Hamiltonians H(k,r) that vary slowly with adiabatic parameters r surrounding the defect and belong to any of the ten symmetry classes defined by time reversal symmetry and particle-hole symmetry. The topological classes for such defects are identified, and explicit formulas for the topological invariants are presented. We introduce a generalization of the bulk-boundary correspondence that relates the topologic…
We consider the one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductor that may form in a planar superconductor-metal-superconductor Josephson junction in which the metal is is subjected to spin orbit coupling and to an in-plane magnetic field. This 1D topological superconductor has been the subject of recent theoretical and experimental attention. We examine the effect of perpendicular magnetic field and a supercurrent driven across the junction on the position and structure of the Majorana zero modes that are associated with the topological superconductor. In particular, we show that under certain …
Chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are two archetypal gapless excitations of two-dimensional topological superconductors. They belong to superconductors from two different Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes characterized by $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant respectively. It seems improbable to tune a pair of co-propagating chiral edge modes to counter-propagate without symmetry breaking. Here we show that such a direct topological transition is in fact possible, provided the system possesses an additional symmetry $\mathcal{O}$ which changes the bulk topological invaria…
In this paper we study an s-wave topological SC with a square vortex-lattice. We proposed a topological Majorana lattice model to describe this topological state. We found that the Majorana lattice model is really a "topological SC" on the parent topological SC. Such correspondence between the Majorana lattice model and the topological SC with vortex-lattice is another holographic feature of the topological state. In addition, the numerical calculations confirm our theoretical prediction.
We present quantum control techniques to engineer flat bands of symmetry-protected Majorana edge modes in s-wave superconductors. Specifically, we show how periodic control may be employed for designing time-independent effective Hamiltonians, which support $Floquet$ $Majorana$ $flat$ $bands$, starting from equilibrium conditions that are either topologically trivial or only support individual Majorana pairs. In the first approach, a suitable modulation of the chemical potential simultaneously induces Majorana flat bands and dynamically $activates$ a pre-existing chiral symmetry which is respo…
Majorana corner modes appearing in two-dimensional second-order topological superconductors have great potential applications for fault-tolerant topological quantum computations. We demonstrate that in the presence of an in-plane magentic field two-dimensional ($s+p$)-wave superconductors host Majorana corner modes, whose location can be manipulated by the direction of the magnetic field. In addition, we discuss the effects of edge imperfections on the Majorana corner modes. We describe how different edge shapes and edge disorder affect the number and controllability of the Majorana corner mod…
Semiconducting nanowires in proximity to superconductors are promising experimental systems for Majorana fermions which may ultimately be used as building blocks for topological quantum computers. A serious challenge in the experimental realization of the Majorana fermion in these semiconductor-superconductor nanowire structures is tuning the semiconductor chemical potential in close proximity to the metallic superconductor. We show that, presently realizable structures in experiments with tunable chemical potential lead to Majorana resonances, which are interesting in their own right, but do …
It has been widely believed that half quantum vortices are indispensable to realize topological stable Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian anyons in spinful superconductors/superfluids. Contrary to this wisdom, we here demonstrate that integer quantum vortices in spinful superconductors can host topologically stable Majorana zero modes because of the mirror symmetry. The symmetry protected Majorana fermions may exhibit non-Abelian anyon braiding.
Through a systematic symmetry and topology analysis we establish that three-dimensional chiral superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling and odd-parity pairing generically host low-energy nodal quasiparticles that are spin-non-degenerate and realize Majorana fermions in three dimensions. By examining all types of chiral Cooper pairs with total angular momentum $J$ formed by Bloch electrons with angular momentum $j$ in crystals, we obtain a comprehensive classification of gapless Majorana quasiparticles in terms of energy-momentum relation and location on the Fermi surface. We show that t…
Majorana fermions exist on the boundaries of two-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs) as charge-neutral quasi-particles. The neutrality makes the detection of such states challenging from both experimental and theoretical points of view. Current methods largely rely on transport measurements in which Majorana fermions manifest themselves by inducing electron-pair tunneling at the lead-contacting point. Here we show that chiral Majorana fermions in TSCs generate {enhanced} local optical response. The features of local optical conductivity distinguish them not only from trivial superco…
The Higgs mode associated with amplitude fluctuations of the superconducting gap in uniform superconductors usually is heavy, which makes its excitation and detection difficult. We report on the existence of a gapless Higgs mode in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states. This feature is originated from the Goldstone mode associated with the translation symmetry breaking. The existence of the gapless Higgs mode is demonstrated by using both a phenomenological model and microscopic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. The gapless Higgs mode can avoid the decay into other low energy excit…
The superconducting gap structures in the transition-metal-based kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K,Rb,Cs), the first family of quasi-two-dimensional kagome superconductors, remain elusive as there is strong experimental evidence for both nodal and nodaless gap structures. Here we show that the dichotomy can be resolved because of the coexistence of time-reversal symmetry breaking with a conventional fully gapped superconductivity. The symmetry protects the edge states which arise on the domains of the lattice symmetry breaking order to remain gapless in proximity to a conventional pairing. We dem…
The theory of superconductivity developed by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS) explains the stabilization of electron pairs into a spin-singlet, even frequency, state by the formation of an energy gap within which the density of states is zero. At a superconductor interface with an inhomogeneous ferromagnet, a gapless odd frequency superconducting state is predicted, in which the Cooper pairs are in a spin-triplet state. Although indirect evidence for such a state has been obtained, the gap structure and pairing symmetry have not so far been determined. Here we report scanning tunnelling sp…
We theoretically study the effect of orbital-dependent exchange field in the formation of second order topological superconductors. We demonstrate that changing the orbital difference can induce topological transition and the Majorana corner modes therein can be manipulated. We further propose to detect the corner modes via a normal probe terminal. The conductance quantization is found to be robust to changes of the relevant system parameters.
We propose a novel platform for the creation and manipulation of Majorana zero modes consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic wire placed between conventional superconductors which are in proximity to ferromagnetic insulators. Our device relies on the interplay of applied supercurrents and exchange fields emerging from the ferromagnetic insulators. We assert that the proposed superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures exhibit enhanced controllability, since topological superconductivity can be tuned apart from gate voltages applied on the ferromagnetic wire, also by manipulating the applied sup…
We show that a single-fermion quantum dot acquires odd-frequency Gor'kov anomalous averages in proximity to strongly correlated Majorana zero modes, described by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Despite the presence of finite anomalous pairing, the superconducting gap vanishes for the intermediate coupling strength between the quantum dot and Majoranas. The increase of the coupling leads to smooth suppression of the original quasiparticles. This effect might be used as a characterization tool for recently proposed tabletop realizations of the SYK model.
Topological superconductors are exotic gapped phases of matter hosting Majorana mid-gap states on their boundary. In conventional topological superconductors, Majorana in-gap states appear in the form of either localized zero-dimensional modes or propagating spin-1/2 fermions with a quasi-relativistic dispersion relation. Here we show that unconventional propagating Majorana states can emerge on the surface of three-dimensional topological superconductors protected by rotational symmetry. The unconventional Majorana surface states fall into three different categories: a spin-$S$ Majorana fermi…
In this paper we find that confining a second-order topological superconductor with a harmonic potential leads to a proliferation of Majorana corner modes. As a consequence, this results in the formation of Majorana corner flat bands which have a fundamentally different origin from that of the conventional mechanism. This is due to the fact that they arise solely from the one-dimensional gapped boundary states of the hybrid system that become gapless without the bulk gap closing under the increase of the trapping potential magnitude. The Majorana corner states are found to be robust against th…
Braiding Majorana zero modes is essential for fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Iron-based superconductors with nontrivial band topology have recently emerged as a surprisingly promising platform for creating distinct Majorana zero modes in magnetic vortices in a single material and at relatively high temperatures. The magnetic field-induced Abrikosov vortex lattice makes it difficult to braid a set of Majorana zero modes or to study the coupling of a Majorana doublet due to overlapping wave functions. Here we report the observation of the proposed quantum anomalous vortex with int…
We systematically study gapless topological phases of (semi-)metals and nodal superconductors described by Bloch and Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians. Using K-theory, a classification of topologically stable Fermi surfaces in (semi-)metals and nodal lines in superconductors is derived. We discuss a generalized bulk-boundary correspondence that relates the topological features of the Fermi surfaces and superconducting nodal lines to the presence of protected zero-energy states at the boundary of the system. Depending on the case, the boundary states are either linearly dispersing (i.e., Dirac …
Topologically nontrivial superconducting phases have been engineered in topological materials by the proximity effect in contact with conventional superconductors. In this paper, by using the method of the Kronig-Penney model, we study the superconducting proximity effect in the bulk electronic states of Weyl semimetals by considering a multilayer structure consisting of Weyl-semimetal and superconductor layers. Due to the proximity effect, two Weyl nodes are decoupled into four nodes of Majorana fermions resulting in Weyl-superconductor phases or three-dimensional extension of topological-sup…
A new method is introduced for probing Topological Superconductors. The integration of the superconding fermions generates a topological $\mathbf{Chern-Simons}$ sound action . Dislocations induce Majorana zero modes inside the sample, resulting in a new Hamiltonian which couple the Majorana modes, the electron field and the non-Abelian strain field sound. This Hamiltonian is used to compute the anomalous sound absorption. The Topological superconductor absorbs sound below the superconducting gap due to the transition between the quasi particles and the Majorana fermions. The sound waves offers…
Semiconducting nanowires in proximity to superconductors are promising experimental systems for Majorana fermions, which may ultimately be used as building blocks for topological quantum computers. A serious challenge in the experimental realization of the Majorana fermions is the supression of topological superconductivity by disorder. We show that Majorana fermions protected by a robust topological gap can occur at the ends of a chain of quantum dots connected by s-wave superconductors. In the appropriate parameter regime, we establish that the quantum dot/superconductor system is equivalent…
We show that Majorana fermions associated with Majorana flat bands emerge as zero energy modes on the [110] edge of single layer or multilayer nodal superconductors with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, as long as the global inversion symmetry of the single layer or multilayer superconductor is broken, and in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field parallel to the [110] edge, the Majorana fermions together with usual fermionic Andreev bound states induce a triple-peak structure in tunnelling spectroscopy experiments. Importantly, we show that the zero bia…
In this work, we show that a quasi-one-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is a DIII class, time-reversal invariant, topological superconductor (TS) which supports a Majorana Kramers Doublet (MKD) at each end of the TS. A MKD is a pair of Majorana end states (MESs) protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). An external magnetic field breaks TRS and drives the system from DIII to D class in which case a single MES appears at each end of the TS. We show that a MKD induces resonant Andreev reflection with zero bias conductance peak of $4e^2/h$. Experiment…
Disorder is known to suppress the gap of a topological superconducting state that would support non-Abelian Majorana zero modes. In this paper, we study using the self-consistent Born approximation the robustness of the Majorana modes to disorder within a suitably extended Eilenberger theory, in which the spatial dependence of the localized Majorana wave functions is included. We find that the Majorana mode becomes delocalized with increasing disorder strength as the topological superconducting gap is suppressed. However, surprisingly, the zero bias peak seems to survive even for disorder stre…
We analyze the prospects for stabilizing Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires that are proximity-coupled to higher-temperature superconductors. We begin with the case of iron pnictides which, though they are s-wave superconductors, are believed to have superconducting gaps that change sign. We then consider the case of cuprate superconudctors. We show that a nanowire on a step-like surface, especially in an orthorhombic material such as YBCO, can support Majorana zero modes at an elevated temperature.
