We prove that finitely generated virtually free groups are stable in permutations. As an application, we show that almost-periodic almost-automorphisms of labelled graphs are close to periodic automorphisms.
In this note we prove that finitely generated virtually free groups are stable with respect to a normalized $p$-Schatten norm for $1\leq p < \infty$. In particular, this implies that virtually free groups are Hilbert-Schmidt stable.
We prove that all finitely generated free metabelian groups are permutation stable. This partially answers to the question asked by Levit and Lubotzky whether all finitely generated metabelian groups are permutation stable. Our proof extends the range of application of Levit-Lubotzky's method, which is used to show permutation stability of permutational wreath products of finitely generated abelian groups, to non-split and non-permutational metabelian groups.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, let $R$ be a commutative ring and let $\mathcal{F}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. We introduce the category $\overline{\mathcal{F}_{Rpp_k}}$ of stable diagonal $p$-permutation functors over $R$. We prove that the category $\overline{\mathcal{F}_{\mathbb{F}pp_k}}$ is semisimple and give a parametrization of its simple objects in terms of the simple diagonal $p$-permutation functors. We also introduce the notion of a stable functorial equivalence over $R$ between blocks of finite groups. We prove that if …
A profinite group is index-stable if any two isomorphic open subgroups have the same index. Let $p$ be a prime, and let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic analytic group with associated $\mathbb{Q}_p$-Lie algebra $\mathcal{L}(G)$. We prove that $G$ is index-stable whenever $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is semisimple. In particular, a just-infinite compact $p$-adic analytic group is index-stable if and only if it is not virtually abelian. Within the category of compact $p$-adic analytic groups, this gives a positive answer to a question of C. Reid. In the Appendix, J-P. Serre proves that $G$ is index-stable if and o…
A group may be considered $C^*$-stable if almost representations of the group in a $C^*$-algebra are always close to actual representations. We initiate a systematic study of which discrete groups are $C^*$-stable or only stable with respect to some subclass of $C^*$-algebras, e.g. finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras. We provide criteria and invariants for stability of groups and this allows us to completely determine stability/non-stability of crystallographic groups, finitely generated torsion-free step-2 nilpotent groups, surface groups, virtually free groups and certain Baumslag-Solitar grou…
Let $Γ$ be a relatively hyperbolic group and let $μ$ be an admissible symmetric finitely supported probability measure on $Γ$. We extend Floyd-Ancona type inequalities up to the spectral radius of $μ$. We then show that when the parabolic subgroups are virtually abelian, the Martin boundary of the induced random walk on $Γ$ is stable in the sense of Picardello and Woess. We also define a notion of spectral degenerescence along parabolic subgroups and give a criterion for strong stability of the Martin boundary in terms of spectral degenerescence. We prove that this criterion is always satisfie…
