In this paper we generalize the notion of strongly poly-free group to a larger class of groups, we call them strongly poly-surface groups and prove that the Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture of Farrell and Jones corresponding to the stable topological pseudoisotopy functor is true for any virtually strongly poly-surface group. A consequence is that the Whitehead group of a torsion free subgroup of any virtually strongly poly-surface group vanishes.
A classical result by K.B. Lee states that every group morphism between almost crystallographic groups is induced by an affine map on the nilpotent Lie group whereon these groups by definition act. It is the main technique for studying morphisms between virtually nilpotent groups, having important applications in fixed point theory, for example as a tool to compute Nielsen numbers for self-maps on infra-nilmanifolds. In this paper we generalize this result to morphisms between virtually polycyclic groups, which are known to act crystallographically by affine transformations on a nilpotent Lie …
Let M be a graph manifold. We prove that fundamental groups of embedded incompressible surfaces in M are separable in the fundamental group of M, and that the double cosets for crossing surfaces are also separable. We deduce that if there is a "sufficient" collection of surfaces in M, then the fundamental group of M is virtually the fundamental group of a special nonpositively curved cube complex. We provide a sufficient collection for graph manifolds with boundary thus proving that their fundamental groups are virtually special, and hence linear.
In this paper, we give infinitely many non-Haken hyperbolic genus three 3-manifolds each of which has a finite cover whose induced Heegaard surface from some genus three Heegaard surface of the base manifold is reducible but can be compressed into an incompressible surface. This result supplements [CG] and extends [MMZ].
Let S be an immersed horizontal surface in a 3-dimensional graph manifold. We show that the fundamental group of the surface S is quadratically distorted whenever the surface is virtually embedded (i.e., separable) and is exponentially distorted when the surface is not virtually embedded.
Let $Σ$ be a compact orientable surface of finite type with at least one boundary component. Let $Γ\leq \textup{Mod}(Σ)$ be a non virtually solvable subgroup. We answer a question of Lubotzky by showing that there exists a finite dimensional homological representation $ρ$ of $\textup{Mod}(Σ)$ such that $ρ(Γ)$ is not virtually solvable. We then apply results of Lubotzky and Meiri to show that for any random walk on such a group the probability of landing on a power, or on an element with topological entropy $0$ both decrease exponentially in the length of the walk.
We show that many 3-manifold groups have no nonabelian surface subgroups. For example, any link of an isolated complex surface singularity has this property. In fact, we determine the exact class of closed graph-manifolds which have no immersed pi_1-injective surface of negative Euler characteristic. We also determine the class of closed graph manifolds which have no finite cover containing an embedded such surface. This is a larger class. Thus, manifolds M^3 exist which have immersed pi_1-injective surfaces of negative Euler characteristic, but no such surface is virtually embedded (finitely …

Using a probabilistic argument we show that the second bounded cohomology of an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ (e.g., a non-elementary hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic group, non-exceptional mapping class group, ${\rm Out}(F_n)$, \dots) embeds via the natural restriction maps into the inverse limit of the second bounded cohomologies of its virtually free subgroups, and in fact even into the inverse limit of the second bounded cohomologies of its hyperbolically embedded virtually free subgroups. This result is new and non-trivial even in the case where $G$ is a (non-free) hyperbolic gro…
Let M be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume that admits a decomposition into right-angled ideal polyhedra. We show that M has a deformation retraction that is a virtually special square complex, in the sense of Haglund and Wise and deduce that such manifolds are virtually fibered. We generalise a theorem of Haglund and Wise to the relatively hyperbolic setting and deduce that the fundamental group of M is LERF and that the geometrically finite subgroups of the fundamental group are virtual retracts. Examples of 3-manifolds admitting such a decomposition include augmented link co…
We give a new, effective proof of the separability of cubically convex-cocompact subgroups of special groups. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is a virtually compact special hyperbolic group, and $Q\leq G$ is a $K$-quasiconvex subgroup, then any $g\in G-Q$ of word-length at most $n$ is separated from $Q$ by a subgroup whose index is polynomial in $n$ and exponential in $K$. This generalizes a result of Bou-Rabee and the authors on residual finiteness growth and a result of the second author on surface groups.
We calculate the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of a sphere with at most six punctures. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of the twice-holed torus and of the closed genus-two surface.
Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$ be the mapping class group of a compact connected orientable surface $S$, possibly with punctures and boundary components, with negative Euler characteristic. We prove that for any infinite virtually abelian subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$, there is a subgroup $H'$ commensurable with $H$ such that the commensurator of $H$ equals the normalizer of $H'$. As a consequence we give, for each $n \geq 2$, an upper bound for the geometric dimension of $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$ for the family of abelian subgroups of rank bounded by $n$. These results generalize work by Juan-Pineda--Truj…
A hyperbolic conjugacy class in the modular group PSL(2,Z) corresponds to a closed geodesic in the modular orbifold. Some of these geodesics virtually bound immersed surfaces, and some do not; the distinction is related to the polyhedral structure in the unit ball of the stable commutator length norm. We prove the following stability theorem: for every hyperbolic element of the modular group, the product of this element with a sufficiently large power of a parabolic element is represented by a geodesic that virtually bounds an immersed surface.
We show that for certain hyperbolic 3-manifolds, all boundary slopes are slopes of immersed incompressible surfaces, covered by incompressible embeddings in some finite cover. The manifolds include hyperbolic punctured torus bundles and hyperbolic two-bridge knots.
We prove a well known conjecture of Nikolai Ivanov which states that if $X$ is a surface of genus $\geq 3$ (with any number of punctures and boundary components), $\rm{Mod}(X)$ is the mapping class group of $X$, and $K < \rm{Mod}(X)$ is a finite-index subgroup, then $K$ does not virtually surject to $\mathbb{Z}$. As a corollary of this we get that $H_1(Z; \mathbb{Q}) = 0$ whenever $Z$ is a finite cover of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, the moduli space of complex algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 3$ with $n$ marked points.
We show that Out(G) is residually finite if G is a one-ended group that is hyperbolic relative to virtually polycyclic subgroups. More generally, if G is one-ended and hyperbolic relative to proper residually finite subgroups, the group of outer automorphisms preserving the peripheral structure is residually finite. We also show that Out(G) is virtually p-residually finite for every prime p if G is one-ended and toral relatively hyperbolic, or infinitely-ended and virtually p-residually finite.
Let $G$ be a finitely presented group that can be written as an extension \[ 1 \longrightarrow K \longrightarrow G \longrightarrow F_2 \longrightarrow 1 \] where $K$ is either the finitely generated free group $F_n$, $n > 2$ or the fundamental group of a closed surface of genus $g > 1$. We prove that if the image of the monodromy map $ρ\colon F_2 \to \operatorname{Out(K)}$ contains an element $φ\in \operatorname{Out(K)}$ such that the mapping torus $K \rtimes_φ \Bbb{Z}$ is virtually residually finite rationally solvable (for instance whenever the mapping torus is hyperbolic), then $G$ is not c…
Let $M$ be a graph manifold containing a single JSJ torus $T$ and whose JSJ blocks are of the form $Σ\times S^1$, where $Σ$ is a compact orientable surface with boundary. We show that if $M$ does not admit a Riemannian metric of everywhere nonpositive sectional curvature, then there is an essential curve on $T$ such that any finite-dimensional linear representation of $π_1(M)$ maps an element representing that curve to a matrix all of whose eigenvalues are roots of $1$. In particular, this shows that $π_1(M)$ does not admit a faithful finite-dimensional unitary representation, and gives a new …
We provide a condition on the links of polygonal complexes that is sufficient to ensure groups acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on such complexes contain a virtually free codimension-1 subgroup. We provide stronger conditions on the links of polygonal complexes, which are sufficient to ensure groups acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on such complexes act properly discontinuously on a CAT(0) cube complex. If the group is hyperbolic then this action is also cocompact, hence by Agol's Theorem the group is virtually special (in the sense of Haglund-Wise); in particular…
Using quantum representations of mapping class groups we prove that profinite completions of Burnside-type surface group quotients are not virtually prosolvable, in general. Further, we construct infinitely many finite simple characteristic quotients of surface groups.
This article has two purposes. In \cite{R3} (math.KT/0405211) we showed that the FIC (Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture for pseudoisotopy functor) for a particular class of 3-manifolds (we denoted this class by \cal C) is the key to prove the FIC for 3-manifold groups in general. And we proved the FIC for the fundamental groups of members of a subclass of \cal C. This result was obtained by showing that the double of any member of this subclass is either Seifert fibered or supports a nonpositively curved metric. In this article we prove that for any M in {\cal C} there is a closed 3-manifold P su…
Consider a group G and a family $\mathcal{A}$ of subgroups of G. We say that vertex finiteness holds for splittings of G over $\mathcal{A}$ if, up to isomorphism, there are only finitely many possibilities for vertex stabilizers of minimal G-trees with edge stabilizers in $\mathcal{A}$. We show vertex finiteness when G is a toral relatively hyperbolic group and $\mathcal{A}$ is the family of abelian subgroups. We also show vertex finiteness when G is hyperbolic relative to virtually polycyclic subgroups and $\mathcal{A}$ is the family of virtually cyclic subgroups; if moreover G is one-ended, …
We prove that if a surface group embeds as a normal subgroup in a Kähler group and the conjugation action of the Kähler group on the surface group preserves the conjugacy class of a non-trivial element, then the Kähler group is virtually given by a direct product, where one factor is a surface group. Moreover we prove that if a one-ended hyperbolic group with infinite outer automorphism group embeds as a normal subgroup in a Kähler group then it is virtually a surface group. More generally we give restrictions on normal subgroups of Kähler groups which are amalgamated products or HNN extension…
We show that every closed, virtually fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold contains immersed, quasi-Fuchsian surfaces with convex cores of arbitrarily large thickness.
The Farrell-Jones Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture for the stable topological pseudoisotopy theory has been proved for several classes of groups. For example for discrete subgroups of Lie groups, virtually poly-infinite cyclic groups, Artin braid groups, a class of virtually poly-surface groups and virtually solvable linear group. We extend these results in the sense that if G is a group from the above classes then we prove the conjecture for the wreath product G with H for H a finite group. We also prove the conjecture for some other classes of groups.
We determine which amalgamated products of surface groups identified over multiples of simple closed curves are not fundamental groups of 3-manifolds. We prove each surface amalgam considered is virtually the fundamental group of a 3-manifold. We prove that each such surface group amalgam is abstractly commensurable to a right-angled Coxeter group from a related family. In an appendix, we determine the quasi-isometry classes among these surface amalgams and their related right-angled Coxeter groups.
We consider linear groups which do not contain unipotent elements of infinite order, which includes all linear groups in positive characteristic, and show that this class of groups has good properties which resemble those held by groups of non positive curvature and which do not hold for arbitrary characteristic zero linear groups. In particular if such a linear group is finitely generated then centralisers virtually split and all finitely generated abelian subgroups are undistorted. If further the group is virtually torsion free (which always holds in characteristic zero) then we have a stron…
Gordon and Wilton recently proved that the double D of a free group F amalgamated along a cyclic subgroup C of F contains a surface group if a generator w of C satisfies a certain 3-manifold theoretic condition, called virtually geometricity. Wilton and the author defined the polygonality of w which also guarantees the existence of a surface group in D. In this paper, virtual geometricity is shown to imply polygonality up to descending to a finite-index subgroup F' and applying an automorphism on F'. That the converse does not hold will follow from an example formerly considered by Manning.
A longstanding question of Gromov asks whether every one-ended word-hyperbolic group contains a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. An infinite family of word-hyperbolic groups can be obtained by taking doubles of free groups amalgamated along words that are not proper powers. We define a set of polygonal words in a free group of finite rank, and prove that polygonality of the amalgamating word guarantees that the associated square complex virtually contains a $π_1$-injective closed surface. We provide many concrete examples of classes of polygonal word…
We prove that every finitely generated Kleinian group that contains a finite, non-cyclic subgroup either is finite or virtually free or contains a surface subgroup. Hence, every arithmetic Kleinian group contains a surface subgroup.
A graph product kernel means the kernel of the natural surjection from a graph product to the corresponding direct product. We prove that a graph product kernel of countable groups is special, and a graph product of finite or cyclic groups is virtually cocompact special in the sense of Haglund and Wise. The proof of this yields conditions for a graph over which the graph product of arbitrary nontrivial groups (or some cyclic groups, or some finite groups) contains a hyperbolic surface group. In particular, the graph product of arbitrary nontrivial groups over a cycle of length at least five, o…
We study $K$-theoretical aspects of the braid groups $B\_n(\mathbb{S}^{2})$ on $n$ strings of the $2$-sphere, which by results of the second two authors, are known to satisfy the Farrell-Jones fibred isomorphism conjecture~\cite{JM}. In light of this, in order to determine the algebraic $K$-theory of the group ring $\mathbb{Z}[B\_n(\mathbb{S}^{2})]$, one should first compute that of its virtually cyclic subgroups, which were classified by D.~L.~Gon{\c c}alves and the first author. We calculate the Whitehead and $K\_{-1}$-groups of the group rings of the finite subgroups (dicyclic and binary po…
Let $G$ be the semidirect product $Γ\rtimes F_2$ where $Γ$ is either the free group $F_n$, $n > 1$ or the fundamental group $S_g$ of a closed surface of genus $g > 1$. We prove that $G$ is incoherent, solving two problems posed by D. Wise. This implies an affirmative answer to a question of J. Hillman on the fundamental group of a surface bundle over a surface. Although many groups have been shown to be incoherent using virtual algebraic fibering, we also show that not every free-by-free group virtually algebraically fibers.
We show that any Kahler extension of a finitely generated abelian group by a surface group of genus g at least 2 is virtually a product. Conversely, we prove that any homomorphism of an even rank, finitely generated abelian group into the genus g mapping class group with finite image gives rise to a Kahler extension. The main tools come from surface topology and known restrictions on Kahler groups.
We consider aspherical manifolds with torsion-free virtually polycyclic fundamental groups, constructed by Baues. We prove that if those manifolds are cohomologically symplectic then they are symplectic. As a corollary we show that cohomologically symplectic solvmanifolds are symplectic.
We give a survey of the theory of surface braid groups and the lower algebraic K-theory of their group rings. We recall several definitions and describe various properties of surface braid groups, such as the existence of torsion, orderability, linearity, and their relation both with mapping class groups and with the homotopy groups of the 2-sphere. The braid groups of the 2-sphere and the real projective plane are of particular interest because they possess elements of finite order, and we discuss in detail their torsion and the classification of their finite and virtually cyclic subgroups. F…
We show how the existing proof of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for virtually poly-$\mathbb{Z}$-groups can be improved to rely only on the usual inheritance properties in combination with transfer reducibility as a sufficient criterion for the validity of the conjecture.
We show that the group cohomology of torsion-free virtually polycyclic groups and the continuous cohomology of simply connected solvable Lie groups can be computed by the rational cohomology of algebraic groups. Our results are generalizations of certian results on the cohomology of solvmanifolds and infra-solvmanifolds. Moreover as an application of our results, we give a simple proof of the surprising cohomology vanishing theorem given by Dekimpe-Igodt.
We prove the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for algebraic K-theory of spaces for virtually poly-Z-groups. For this, we transfer the 'Farrell-Hsiang method' from the linear case to categories of equivariant, controlled retractive spaces.
