In this paper, we derive an analytic characterization of the symmetric extension of a Herglotz-Nevanlinna function in several variables. Here, the main tools used are the so-called variable non-dependence property and the symmetry formula satisfied by Herglotz-Nevanlinna function and Cauchy-type functions. We also provide an extension of the Stieltjes inversion formula for Cauchy-type functions.
In this paper, we begin by investigating a particular subclass of boundary measures of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in two variables. Based on this, we then proceed to solve the convex combination problem for Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in several variables.
In this article, a characterization of the class of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in $n$ variables is given in terms of an integral representation. Furthermore, alternative conditions on the measure appearing in this representation are discussed in detail. Symmetry properties induced by the integral representation are also investigated.
We derive an integral representation for Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in two variables which provides a complete characterization of this class in terms of a real number, two non-negative numbers and a positive measure satisfying certain conditions. Further properties of the representing measures are discussed.
Scalar-valued meromorphic Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions are characterized by the interlacing property of their poles and zeros together with some growth properties. We give a characterization of matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions by means of a higher-order interlacing property. As an application we deduce a matrix version of the classical Hermite-Biehler Theorem for entire functions.
This is the first part of the review article which focuses on theory and applications of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in material sciences. It starts with the definition of scalar valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions and explains in detail the theorems that are pertinent to applications, followed by a short overview of the matrix-valued and operator-valued versions of these functions and the properties that carry over from scalar cases. The theory is complemented by some applications from electromagnetics that are related to the sum rules. More applications of Herglotz Nevanlinnna functions i…
We study upper bounds for the counting function of common zeros of two meromorphic functions in various contexts. The proofs and results are inspired by recent work involving greatest common divisors in Diophantine approximation, to which we introduce additional techniques to take advantage of the stronger inequalities available in Nevanlinna theory. In particular, we prove a general version of a conjectural "asymptotic gcd" inequality of Pasten and the second author, and consider moving targets versions of our results.
We show that the maximal Nevanlinna counting function and the Carleson function of analytic self-maps of the unit disk are equivalent, up to constants.
We generalize two integral representation formulae of Nevanlinna to functions of several variables. We show that for a large class of analytic functions that have non-negative imaginary part on the upper polyhalfplane there are representation formulae in terms of densely defined self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space. We introduce three types of structured resolvent of a self-adjoint operator and identify four different types of representation in terms of these resolvents. We relate the types of representation that a function admits to its growth at infinity.
This survey shows how, for the Nevanlinna class N of the unit disc, one can define and often characterize the analogues of well-known objects and properties related to the algebra of bounded analytic functions $ H^\infty$: interpolating sequences, Corona theorem, sets of determination, stable rank, as well as the more recent notions of Weak Embedding Property and threshold of invertibility for quotient algebras. The general rule we observe is that a given result for $H^\infty$ can be transposed to N by replacing uniform bounds by a suitable control by positive harmonic functions. We show sever…
It is well known that real measures on the circle are characterized by their Herglotz transform, an analytic function in the unit disc. Invariance of the measure under N-multiplication translates into a functional equation for the Herglotz transform. Using elements from the theory of Hardy spaces one gets a somewhat surprising condition for a sequence of complex numbers to be the Fourier coefficients of an N-invariant measure. Next, starting from any atomless measure on the circle we construct atomless premesures of bounded kappa-variation in the sense of Korenblum which are invariant under s …
A Herglotz function is a holomorphic map from the open complex unit disk into the closed complex right halfplane. A classical Herglotz function has an integral representation against a positive measure on the unit circle. We prove a free analytic analogue of the Herglotz representation and describe how our representations specialize to the free probabilistic case. We also show that the set of representable Herglotz functions arising from noncommutative conditional expectations must be closed in a natural topology.
A Nevanlinna function is a function which is analytic in the open upper half plane and has a non-negative imaginary part there. In this paper we study a fractional linear transformation for a Nevanlinna function $n$ with a suitable asymptotic expansion at $\infty$, that is an analogue of the Schur transformation for contractive analytic functions in the unit disc. Applying the transformation $p$ times we find a Nevanlinna function $n_p$ which is a fractional linear transformation of the given function $n$. The main results concern the effect of this transformation to the realizations of $n$ an…
We will apply Nevanlinna Theory to prove several Ax-Schanuel type Theorems for functional transcendence when the exponential map is replaced by other meromorphic functions. We also show that analytic dependence will imply algebraic dependence for certain classes of entire functions. Finally, some links to transcendental number theory and geometric Ax-Schanuel Theorem will be discussed.
In this paper we give precise characterizations of the relation between the Nevanlinna counting function and pull-back measure of an analytic self-map of the unit disk near the boundary. We show that it is quite worth considering these two concepts on the maximal ideal space of the bounded analytic functions.
The purpose of this paper is to explore Nevanlinna theory of the entire curve $\exh_A f:=(\exp_Af,f):\C \to A \times \Lie(A)$ associated with an entire curve $f: \C \to \Lie(A)$, where $\exp_A:\Lie(A)\to A$ is an exponential map of a semi-abelian variety $A$. Firstly we give a Nevanlinna theoretic proof to the {\em analytic Ax-Schanuel Theorem} for semi-abelian varieties, which was proved by J. Ax 1972 in the case of formal power series (Ax-Schanuel Theorem). We assume some non-degeneracy condition for $f$ such that the elements of the vector-valued function $f(z)-f(0) \in \Lie(A)\iso \C^n$ ar…
Given a collection $K$ of positive integers, let $H^{\infty}_K(\mathbb{D})$ denote the set of all bounded analytic functions defined on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$ whose $k^{\text{th}}$ derivative vanishes at zero, for all $k \in K$. In this paper, we establish a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation result for the subalgebra $H^{\infty}_K(\mathbb{D})$, where $K = \{1,2,\dotsc,k\}$, which is a slight generalization of the interpolation theorem that Davidson, Paulsen, Raghupathi, and Singh proved for the algebra $H^{\infty}_{\{1\}}(\mathbb{D})$. Furthermore, we provide a sufficient condi…
Let K be a non archimedean algebraically closed field of characteristic pi complete for its ultrametric absolute value. In a recent paper by Escassut and Yang, polynomial decompositions P(f)=Q(g) for meromorphic functions f, g on K (resp. in a disk) have been considered, and for a class of polynomials P, Q, estimates for the Nevanlinna function T(r,f) have been derived. In the present paper we consider as a generalization rational decompositions of meromorphic functions. In the case, where f, g are analytic functions, the Second Nevanlinna Theorem yields an analogue result as in the mentioned …
This paper studies the determining sets for analytic functions from the symmetrized bidisk into the open unit disk in $\mathbb C$. It relates the idea to the uniqueness of the solutions of a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem. It also investigates when certain thin sets can be determining.
It is shown that for any non-decreasing, continuous and unbounded doubling function $\om$ on $[0,1)$, there exist two analytic infinite products $f_0$ and $f_1$ such that the asymptotic relation $|f_0(z)| + |f_1(z)| \asymp \om(|z|)$ is satisfied for all $z$ in the unit disc. It is also shown that both functions $f_j$ for $j=0,1$ satisfy $T(r,f_j)\asymp\logω(r)$, as $r\to1^-$, and hence give examples of analytic functions for which the Nevanlinna characteristic admits the regular slow growth induced by $ω$.
For every $q\in(0,1)$ and $0\le α<1$ we define a class of analytic functions, the so-called $q$-starlike functions of order $α$, on the open unit disk. We study this class of functions and explore some inclusion properties with the well-known class of starlike functions of order $α$. The paper is also devoted to the discussion on the Herglotz representation formula for analytic functions $zf'(z)/f(z)$ when $f(z)$ is $q$-starlike of order $α$. As an application we also discuss the Bieberbach conjecture problem for the $q$-starlike functions of order $α$. Further application includes the study o…
Two different problems are considered here. First, a version of Schwarz-Pick Lemma for $n$ points leads to an interpolation problem for analytic functions from the disc into itself, which may be considered as a particular case of the classical Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem. Second, a characterization of sampling sequences for this class of functions is given.
We describe a generalization of the notion of a Hilbert space model of a function in the Schur class of the bidisc. This generalization is well adapted to the investigation of boundary behavior at a mild singularity of the function on the 2-torus. We prove the existence of a generalized model with certain properties corresponding to such a singularity and use this result to solve two function-theoretic problems. The first of these is to characterise the directional derivatives of a function in the Schur class at a singular point on the torus for which the Carathéodory condition holds. The seco…
We extend the study of the Pick class, the set of complex analytic functions taking the upper half plane into itself, to the noncommutative setting. R. Nevanlinna showed that elements of the Pick class have certain integral representations which reflect their asymptotic behavior at infinity. Loewner connected the Pick class to matrix monotone functions. We generalize the Nevanlinna representation theorems and Loewner's theorem on matrix monotone functions to the free Pick class, the collection of functions that map tuples of matrices with positive imaginary part into the matrices with positive…
The main themes of this survey are as follows: (a) the canonical (Riesz--Nevanlinna) factorization in various classes of analytic functions on the disk that are smooth up to its boundary, and (b) model subspaces (i.e., invariant subspaces of the backward shift) in the Hardy spaces $H^p$ and in BMOA. It is the interrelationship and a peculiar cross-fertilization between the two topics that we wish to highlight.
We prove generalizations of Löwner's results on matrix monotone functions to several variables. We give a characterization of when a function of $d$ variables is locally monotone on $d$-tuples of commuting self-adjoint $n$-by-$n$ matrices. We prove a generalization to several variables of Nevanlinna's theorem describing analytic functions that map the upper half-plane to itself and satisfy a growth condition. We use this to characterize all rational functions of two variables that are operator monotone.
Classically, theorems of Fatou and Julia describe the boundary regularity of functions in one complex variable. The former says that a complex analytic function on the disk has non-tangential boundary values almost everywhere, and the latter describes when a function takes an extreme value at a boundary point and is differentiable there non-tangentially. We describe a class of intermediate theorems in terms of averaged Julia-Fatou quotients. Boundary regularity is related to integrability of certain quantities against a special measure, the so-called Nevanlinna measure. Applications are given …
