The purpose of this article is to develop an algebraic approach to the problem of integrable classification of differential-difference equations with one continuous and two discrete variables. As a classification criterion, we put forward the following hypothesis. Any integrable equation of the type under consideration admits an infinite sequence of finite-field Darboux-integrable reductions. The property of Darboux integrability of a finite-field system is formalized as finite-dimensionality condition of its characteristic Lie-Rinehart algebras. That allows one to derive effective integrability conditions in the form of differential equations on the right hand side of the equation under study. To test the hypothesis, we use known integrable equations from the class under consideration. In this article, we show that all known examples do have this property.
We present an n-dimensional integrable homogeneous Lotka--Volterra system, which has $(n^2-1)$-dimensional Lie symmetry algebra. Moreover a wider integrable family is derived from the structure of the Lie algebra.
A relation between semi-direct sums of Lie algebras and integrable couplings of lattice equations is established, and a practicable way to construct integrable couplings is further proposed. An application of the resulting general theory to the generalized Toda spectral problem yields two classes of integrable couplings for the generalized Toda hierarchy of lattice equations. The construction of integrable couplings using semi-direct sums of Lie algebras provides a good source of information on complete classification of integrable lattice equations.
We study automorphic Lie algebras and their applications to integrable systems. Automorphic Lie algebras are a natural generalisation of celebrated Kac-Moody algebras to the case when the group of automorphisms is not cyclic. They are infinite dimensional and almost graded. We formulate the concept of a graded isomorphism and classify $sl(2,C)$ based automorphic Lie algebras corresponding to all finite reduction groups. We show that hierarchies of integrable systems, their Lax representations and master symmetries can be naturally formulated in terms of automorphic Lie algebras.
We develop the method for constructing Lax representations of PDEs via the twisted extensions of their algebras of contact symmetries by generalizing the construction to the Lie--Rinehart algebras. We present examples of application of the proposed technique.
The important unsolved problem in theory of integrable systems is to find conditions guaranteeing existence of a Lax representation for a given PDE. The use of the exotic cohomology of the symmetry algebras opens a way to formulate such conditions in internal terms of the PDEs under the study. In this paper we consider certain examples of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras with nontrivial second exotic cohomology groups and show that the Maurer-Cartan forms of the associated extensions of these Lie algebras generate Lax representations for integrable systems, both known and new ones.
We consider the four-dimensional reduced quasi-classical self-dual Yang--Mills equation and show that non-triviality of the second exotic cohomology group of its symmetry algebra implies existence of a two-component integrable generalization of this equation. The sequence of natural extensions of this symmetry algebra generate an integrable hierarchy of multi-dimensional nonlinear PDEs. We write out the first three elements of this hierarchy.
We have derived a family of equations related to the untwisted affine Lie algebras $A^{(1)}_{r}$ using a Coxeter $\mathbb{Z}_{r+1}$ reduction. They represent the third member of the hierarchy of soliton equations related to the algebra. We also give some particular examples and impose additional reductions.
We investigate existence of solitonic solutions for higher-order partial differential equations with polynomial nonlinearities. Using the Hirota method we obtain classification for higher-order integrable systems of equations.
A consistent set of six integrable discrete and continuous dynamical systems are suggested corresponding to arbitrary affine Lie algebra. The set contains a system of partial differential equations which can be treated as a version of generalized Toda lattice while semi-discrete systems in the set define the Backlund transform for this Toda lattice and the fully discrete representative of the set can be obtained as a superposition of such kind Backlund transforms. Four linear Zakharov-Shabat type systems taken pairwise realize Lax pairs for these six dynamical systems.
A hierarchy of integrable hamiltonian nonlinear ODEs is associated with any decomposition of the Lie algebra of Laurent series with coefficients being elements of a semi-simple Lie algebra into a sum of the subalgebra consisting of the Taylor series and some complementary subalgebra. In the case of the Lie algebra $so(3)$ our scheme covers all classical integrable cases in the Kirchhoff problem of the motion of a rigid body in an ideal fluid. Moreover, the construction allows us to generate integrable deformations for known integrable models.
We develop a new integration technique allowing one to construct a rich manifold of particular solutions to multidimensional generalizations of classical $C$- and $S$-integrable Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Generalizations of (1+1)-dimensional $C$-integrable and (2+1)-dimensional $S$-integrable $N$-wave equations are derived among examples. Examples of multidimensional second order PDEs are represented as well.
We represent the Fourier form of the dressing method, which is effective for construction of multidimensional integral-differential equations together with their solutions. Example of integrable (but non-physical) expansion of Intermediate Long Wave equation in (2+1)-dimensions is considered.
We address the problem of classification of integrable differential-difference equations in 2+1 dimensions with one/two discrete variables. Our approach is based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions and its generalisation to dispersive equations. We obtain a number of classification results of scalar integrable equations including that of the intermediate long wave and Toda type.
In the article the problem of the integrable classification of nonlinear lattices depending on one discrete and two continuous variables is studied. By integrability we mean the presence of reductions of a chain to a system of hyperbolic equations of arbitrarily high order integrable in the Darboux sense. Darboux integrablity admits a remarkable algebraic interpretation: the Lie-Rinehart algebras related to both characteristic directions corresponding to the reduced system of the hyperbolic equations have to be of finite dimension. A classification algorithm based on the properties of the char…
We present examples of Lax-integrable multi-dimensional systems of partial differential equations with higher local symmetries. We also consider Lagrangian deformations of these equations and construct variational bivectors on them.
We carry out a detailed Lie point symmetry group classification of the Liénard type equation, $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$, where $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are arbitrary smooth functions of $x$. We divide our analysis into two parts. In the present first part we isolate equations that admit lesser parameter Lie point symmetries, namely, one, two and three parameter symmetries, and in the second part we identify equations that admit maximal (eight) parameter Lie-point symmetries. In the former case the invariant equations form a family of integrable equations and in the latter case they form a class…
In this letter I analyze a covering jet manifold scheme, its relation to the invariant theory of the associated vector fields, and applications to the Lax-Sato-type integrability of nonlinear dispersionless differential systems. The related contact geometry linearization covering scheme is also discussed. The devised techniques are demonstrated for such nonlinear Lax-Sato integrable equations as Gibbons-Tsarev, ABC, Manakov-Santini and the differential Toda singular manifold equations.
Difference-difference systems are suggested corresponding to the Cartan matrices of any simple or affine Lie algebra. In the cases of the algebras $A_N$, $B_N$, $C_N$, $G_2$, $D_3$, $A_1^{(1)}$, $A_2^{(2)}$, $D^{(2)}_N$ these systems are proved to be integrable. For the systems corresponding to the algebras $A_2$, $A_1^{(1)}$, $A_2^{(2)}$ generalized symmetries are found. For the systems $A_2$, $B_2$, $C_2$, $G_2$, $D_3$ complete sets of independent integrals are found. The Lax representation for the difference-difference systems corresponding to $A_N$, $B_N$, $C_N$, $A^{(1)}_1$, $D^{(2)}_N$ a…
We present here the explicit parametric solutions of second order differential equations invariant under time translation and rescaling and third order differential equations invariant under time translation and the two homogeneity symmetries. The computation of first integrals gives in the most general case, the parametric form of the general solution. For some polynomial functions we obtain a time parametrisation quadrature which can be solved in terms of ``known'' functions.
Two integrable differential-difference equations are derived from a (2+1)-dimensional modified Heisenberg ferromagnetic equation and a resonant nonlinear Schröinger equation respectively. Multi-soliton solutions of the resulted semi-discrete systems are given through Hirota's bilinear method. Elastic and inelastic interaction behavior between two solitons are studied through the asymptotic analysis. Dynamics of two-soliton solutions are shown with graphs.
The survey is devoted to algebraic structures related to integrable ODEs and evolution PDEs. A description of Lax representations is given in terms of vector space decomposition of loop algebras into a direct sum of Taylor series and a complementary subalgebra. Examples of complementary subalgebras and corresponding integrable models are presented. In the framework of the bi-Hamiltonian approach compatible associative algebras related affine Dynkin diagrams are considered. A bi-Hamiltonian origin of the classical elliptic Calogero-Moser models is revealed.
In this second of the set of two papers on Lie symmetry analysis of a class of Liénard type equation of the form $\ddot {x} + f(x)\dot {x} + g(x)= 0$, where over dot denotes differentiation with respect to time and $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are smooth functions of their variables, we isolate the equations which possess maximal Lie point symmetries. It is well known that any second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which admits eight parameter Lie point symmetries is linearizable to free particle equation through point transformation. As a consequence all the identified equations turn out …
A method to construct integrable deformations of Hamiltonian systems of ODEs endowed with Lie-Poisson symmetries is proposed by considering Poisson-Lie groups as deformations of Lie-Poisson (co)algebras. Moreover, the underlying Lie-Poisson symmetry of the initial system of ODEs is used to construct integrable coupled systems, whose integrable deformations can be obtained through the construction of the appropriate Poisson-Lie groups that deform the initial symmetry. The approach is applied in order to construct integrable deformations of both uncoupled and coupled versions of certain integrab…
We transfer the scheme of constructing differential reductions, developed recently for the case of the Manakov-Santini hierarchy, to the general multidimensional case. We consider in more detail the four-dimensional case, connected with the second heavenly equation and its generalization proposed by Dunajski. We give a characterization of differential reductions in terms of the Lax-Sato equations as well as in the framework of the dressing method based on nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem.
An integrable hierarchies connected with linear stationary Schrödinger equation with energy dependent potentials (in general case) are considered. Galilei-like and scaling invariance transformations are constructed. A symmetry method is applied to construct invariant solutions.
Systems of discrete equations on a quadrilateral graph related to the series $D^{(2)}_N$ of the affine Lie algebras are studied. The systems are derived from the Hirota-Miwa equation by imposing boundary conditions compatible with the integrability property. The Lax pairs for the systems are presented. It is shown that in the continuum limit the quad systems tend to the corresponding systems of the differential equations belonging to the well-know Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies. The problem of finding the formal asymptotic expansion of the solutions to the Lax equations is studied. Generating fu…
The problem of discretization of Darboux integrable equations is considered. Given a Darboux integrable continuous equation, one can obtain a Darboux integrable differential-discrete equation, using the integrals of the continuous equation. In the present paper, the discretization of the differential-discrete equations is done using the corresponding characteristic algebras. New examples of integrable discrete equations are obtained.
We show that the $m$-dimensional Euler--Manakov top on $so^*(m)$ can be represented as a Poisson reduction of an integrable Hamiltonian system on a symplectic extended Stiefel variety $\bar{\cal V}(k,m)$, and present its Lax representation with a rational parameter. We also describe an integrable two-valued symplectic map $\cal B$ on the 4-dimensional variety ${\cal V}(2,3)$. The map admits two different reductions, namely, to the Lie group SO(3) and to the coalgebra $so^*(3)$. The first reduction provides a discretization of the motion of the classical Euler top in space and has a transparent…
We give a representation--theoretic interpretation of recent discovered coupled soliton equations using vertex operators construction of affinization of not simple but quadratic Lie algebras. In this setup we are able to obtain new integrable hierarchies coupled to each Drinfeld--Sokolov of $A$, $B$, $C$, $D$ hierarchies and to construct their soliton solutions.
We consider the discrete Boussinesq integrable system and the compatible set of differential difference, and partial differential equations. The latter not only encode the complete hierarchy of the Boussisesq equation, but also incorporate the hyperbolic Ernst equations for an Einstein-Maxwell-Weyl field in general relativity. We demonstrate a specific symmetry reduction of the partial differential equations, to a six-parameter, second order coupled system of ordinary differential equations, which is conjectured to be of Garnier type.
We construct a new family of infinite-dimensional quasi-graded Lie algebras on hyperelliptic curves. We show that constructed algebras possess infinite number of invariant functions and admit a decomposition into the direct sum of two subalgebras. These two facts together enables one to use them to construct new integrable finite-dimensional hamiltonian systems. In such a way we find new integrable hamiltonian systems, which are direct higher rank generalizations of the integrable systems of Steklov-Liapunov, associated with the e(3) algebra and Steklov-Veselov associated with the so(4) algebr…

Motivated by the theory of Painlevé equations and associated hierarchies, we study non-autonomous Hamiltonian systems that are Frobenius integrable. We establish sufficient conditions under which a given finite-dimensional Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields can be deformed to a time-dependent Lie algebra of Frobenius integrable vector fields spanning the same distribution as the original algebra. The results are applied to quasi-Stäckel systems.
The hierarchy of integrable equations are considered. The dynamical approach to the theory of nonlinear waves is proposed. The special solutions(nonlinear waves) of considered equations are derived. We use powerful methods of computer algebra such differential resultant and others.
This paper is a review of recent results on integrable nonholonomic geodesic flows of left--invariant metrics and left- and right--invariant constraint distributions on compact Lie groups.
In previous work, we introduced a class of integrable spin Calogero-Moser systems associated with the classical dynamical r-matrices with spectral parameter, as classified by Etingof and Varchenko for simple Lie algebras. Here the main purpose is to establish the Liouville integrability of these systems by a uniform method.
We classify all integrable triples in simple Lie algebras, up to equivalence. The importance of this problem stems from the fact that for each such equivalence class one can construct the corresponding integrable hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian PDE. The simplest integrable triple $(f,0,e)$ in $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ corresponds to the KdV hierarchy, and the triple $(f,0,e_θ)$, where $f$ is the sum of negative simple root vectors and $e_θ$ is the highest root vector of a simple Lie algebra, corresponds to the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy.
We use deformations of Lie algebra homomorphisms to construct deformations of dispersionless integrable systems arising as symmetry reductions of anti--self--dual Yang--Mills equations with a gauge group Diff$(S^1)$.
In this paper we study the spectrum of the spin-1 Temperley-Lieb spin chain with integrable open boundary conditions. We obtain the eigenvalue expressions as well as its associated Bethe ansatz equations by means of the coordinate Bethe ansatz. These equations provide the complete description of the spectrum of the model.
The present paper derives systems of partial differential equations that admit a quadratic zero curvature representation for an arbitrary real semisimple Lie algebra. It also determines the general form of Hamilton's principles and Hamiltonians for these systems and analyzes the linear stability of their equilibrium solutions in the examples of $\mathfrak{so}(3)$ and $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$.
A new class of integrable mappings and chains is introduced. Corresponding $(1+2)$ integrable systems invariant with respect to such discrete transformations are presented in an explicit form. Their soliton-type solutions are constructed in terms of matrix elements of fundamental representations of semisimple $A_n$ algebras for a given group element. The possibility of generalizing this construction to multi-dimensional case is discussed.
The exactly integrable systems connected with semisimple series $A$ for arbitrary grading are presented in explicit form. Their general solutions are expressed in terms of the matrix elements of various fundamental representations of $A_n$ groups. The simplest example of such systems is the generalized Toda chain with the matrices of arbitrary dimensions in each point of the lattice.
We develop the theory of Whitham type hierarchies integrable by hydrodynamic reductions as a theory of certain differential-geometric objects. As an application we construct Gibbons-Tsarev systems associated to moduli space of algebraic curves of arbitrary genus and prove that the universal Whitham hierarchy is integrable by hydrodynamic reductions.
One fruitful motivating principle of much research on the family of integrable systems known as ``Toda lattices'' has been the heuristic assumption that the periodic Toda lattice in an affine Lie algebra is directly analogous to the nonperiodic Toda lattice in a finite-dimensional Lie algebra. This paper shows that the analogy is not perfect. A discrepancy arises because the natural generalization of the structure theory of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras is not the structure theory of loop algebras but the structure theory of affine Kac-Moody algebras. In this paper we use this natural…
We introduce a method to find differential equations for functions which define tables, such that associated billiard systems admit a local first integral. We illustrate this method in three situations: the case of (locally) integrable wire billiards, for finding surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ with a first integral of degree one in velocities, and for finding a piece-wise smooth surface in ${\mathbb R}^3$ homeomorphic to a torus, being a table of an integrable billiard.
A novel class of integrable surfaces is recorded. This class of O surfaces is shown to include and generalize classical surfaces such as isothermic, constant mean curvature, minimal, `linear' Weingarten, Guichard and Petot surfaces and surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature. It is demonstrated that the construction of a Backlund transformation for O surfaces leads in a natural manner to an associated parameter-dependent linear representation. The classical pseudosphere and breather pseudospherical surfaces are generated.
We construct a zero curvature formulation, in superspace, for the sTB-B hierarchy which naturally reduces to the zero curvature condition in terms of components, thus solving one of the puzzling features of this model. This analysis, further, suggests a systematic method of constructing higher dimensional representations for the zero curvature condition starting with the fundamental representation. We illustrate this with the examples of the sTB hierarchy and the sKdV hierarchy. This would be particularly useful in constructing explicit higher dimensional representations of graded Lie algebras…
We introduce spin Calogero-Moser systems associated with root systems of simple Lie algebras and give the associated Lax representations (with spectral parameter) and fundamental Poisson bracket relations. The associated integrable models (called integrable spin Calogero-Moser systems in the paper) and their Lax pairs are then obtained via Poisson reduction and gauge transformations. For Lie algebras of $A_{n}$-type, this new class of integrable systems includes the usual Calogero-Moser systems as subsystems. Our method is guided by a general framework which we develop here using dynamical Lie…
This paper is a continuation of our previous paper \cite{LOSZ}. For simple complex Lie groups with non-trivial center, i.e. classical simply-connected groups, $E_6$ and $E_7$ we consider elliptic Modified Calogero-Moser systems corresponding to the Higgs bundles with an arbitrary characteristic class. These systems are generalization of the classical Calogero-Moser (CM) systems related to a simple Lie groups and contain CM systems related to some (unbroken) subalgebras. For all algebras we construct a special basis, corresponding to non-trivial characteristic classes, the explicit forms of Lax…
We prove that any classical affine W-algebra W(g,f), where g is a classical Lie algebra and f is an arbitrary nilpotent element of g, carries an integrable Hamiltonian hierarchy of Lax type equations. This is based on the theories of generalized Adler type operators and of generalized quasideterminants, which we develop in the paper. Moreover, we show that under certain conditions, the product of two generalized Adler type operators is a Lax type operator. We use this fact to construct a large number of integrable Hamiltonian systems, recovering, as a special case, all KdV type hierarchies con…
